flying from Arizona to Chicago during the fight I went back you know just to chat with some of the players I think it was Lindor and a couple of the other guys and it's like hey we got to find a way to not only to match the energy but we have to out hous all these guy and yeah this is the conversation we're having right now you know so we were having it in the front of the plane as a coaching staff and then at the same time the players were having it I want to talk a little bit about Shawn maniah specifically he's kind of solidified himself in the Ace role what about him makes you feel that way he takes the ball he's going right after people not afraid of contact the mental players go ahead and hit it and he's getting swinging misses he's getting quick outs and that's what's allowing him to go deep in games how valuable has Lindor been to this Team MVP he's been everything for us on and off the field we see the numbers the way he's playing but what he means to the team to the franchise and how bad he wants to win he wants it so bad we all want it we all want to win and just the way he goes about his business you know he's a true leader and he definitely deserves to be not only in the conversation but he's right there for the MVP hey we're meeting at the Apple I'm vetto kisi that's Jonathan Baron and we're meeting today with manager Carlos Mendoza Carlos everybody Circle this road trip as one of the biggest tests of the Year how's it feel to come out of that seven and three well first of all I think we need to start circling every game or every you know like the home the next road trip CU every single one of them is important right but no uh you're right um you know looking back now we knew what was ahead of us uh but the mentality has always been the same you know one day at a time time one series at a time let's make sure we take care take care of business let's do what we need to do today to win today's game uh I'm glad that you know uh we had a really really good uh road trip uh guys showed up uh after a couple of tough losses you know throughout the road trip we were able to bounce back and we've done that the whole year so it was a it was a long road trip a good one and now excited to be back here in playing in City Field in front of our BAS uh fan base and it was it was kind of a trip two stories the first seven games were against teams that you guys are directly chasing and then a book ended with three against the Chicago White Socks and we know the White Sox are not having a great season but it felt like the team going into the southide knew there was a mission to accomplish and knew that they could not take their foot off the gas and had paid off you guys sleep the series was that a mindset that you and the coaching staff had to remind them and say hey we can't Overlook these guys are still trying to beat us or did the players themselves sort of just go into it knowing without any motiv or any words of wisdom that hey three games we got to find three W's here let's make this a 7 and3 trip let's finish this month strong yeah uh and you're 100% right I think it was a combination of both you know uh coming from myself the coaches but I remember flying from Arizona to Chicago uh during the flight I went back you know just to chat with some of the players and uh I I think it was Lindor um and a couple of the other guys and it's like hey we got to find a way to not only to match the energy but we have to out hous all these guy and yeah this is the conversation we're having right now you know so it was we were having it in the front of the plane as a coaching staff and then at the same time the players were having it you know we were enjoying it the fact that hey we just got a huge win Series against the Diamond Back a huge game you know winning 3 to2 I think it was with you know elaia two out hit uh so we were enjoying the flight and and all that but our mindset was already thinking okay the next series and we knew that because you know coming from San Diego pack house playing that team then go to Arizona playing the team you know the atmosphere pack house uh it was going to be a little bit of a challenge here and to your question I I think both sides were already how can you know we need to do something because we we got to make sure we got to take care of business and uh proud of the boys proud of the guys that you know it wasn't easy the white so got they got some good arms especially that one that we saw yesterday yeah on cette you know uh but again uh found a way and that's what it's all about and now we're here at home yeah and you know Francisco Lindor we heard that he said to the team we heard through the media that he said to the team like we got to just stay up and go after these guys we can't fall asleep against them and Lindor I mean what a road trip for him you heard the MVP chance how important has Lindor been how valuable has Lindor been to this team unbelievable uh MVP you know and he's pretty cool when you are on the road that you know you're hearing that uh and he's loud um but he's he's been everything for us um you know on and off the field we see the numbers we see you know the way he's playing but what he means to the team to the franchise and how bad he wants to win I keep saying it uh he wants it so bad we all want it we all want to win but and just the way he goes about his business you know he's a true leader uh and he definitely deserves to be not only in the conversation but uh he's he's he's right there for the MVP he also said the other day that um when he was going through a little bit of struggles he went up to the hitting coaches and then he brought up going up to you about connecting more to Barrel can you tell us about your side of that conversation um I mean it's hard for me to get into the details because I feel like we're having conversations every day you know whether it's before the game even during the game there's times where before he goes to the on Deck we we could be talking about the next set bat or what the pitcher is doing and or a play that happened on the field or something that we saw there's always this back and forth so I'm not sure what you know I know he went and hit a Grand's L and I think he said it to the media but uh like I said it happens all the time that we're having these conversations he's always asking questions to the hitting coach getting feedback some information and then you know he comes by and asks me a question so it's it's a lot of back and forth and there was that moment in San Diego when brabon was pitching I think it was the Thursday night game and he was encouraging him to try to get through a bit of a tough outing and he did and brabon has been really good since then so the leadership on the field and The Dugout what fans see they don't see it's unmatched it must be a an absolute pleasure for you to get to manage him I want to talk about the starting pitching since June 13th no team in the national league has a better staff ER than the New York Mets at 370 and you guys have had some incredible uh individual performances David Peterson 250 in that span Shawn manah 270 in that span Jose canana your your Trio of lefties 342 in that span what has made the starting staff so successful for more than two months now no other team in the National League better yeah I think he's contagious um it starts with uh whether you could say make a case for Manaya you can make a case for srino but they way Peterson throwing the ball uh kintana his ability to bounce back after a couple of rough outing couple of rough stretches there uh and guys will continue to step up uh Blackburn gave us a few starts then he gets hit Migel takes the ball give us a chance to win a baseball game so like I said I think he just uh each one of them pushing each other and I was like all right you did it yeah yesterday he's kind of like I got to go do it and give the team a chance so uh Peterson's been unbelievable but the biggest thing is throwing strikes staying on the attack getting ahead uh and putting hitters away uh early um avoiding walks uh which is you know not a secret it's been it's been an issue for us throughout the year I feel like we've done a really good job as of late knock on wood uh but yeah I think he's a little bit of everything I know grab ball generation especially when you talk about canana and Peterson the bread and butter and the nfield defense behind those guys has been so good and really helped turn a lot of those ground balls into outs now I want to talk a little bit about Shawn manah specifically another fantastic outing he's been giving you seven Innings seemingly every time he goes out there it's starting to feel like each time he takes the mound something special could happen and after Sunday's game in Chicago you mentioned that he's kind of solidified himself in the Ace role if you would you know he's been an anchor really for this team for you know going back to that mid June Point what about him makes you feel that way that he's kind of the ace the leader of this staff yeah I think I'm going go back to that out in in Chicago where we were facing crochette and when you're watching him and he's going strike three after strike three swinging misses and he retired the first nine nine guys with seven straight to start you're going like oh my God you know like uh but then you saw the attitude from Mana right away that first in he like all right is that what you want to bring I'll bring it too and he went just right after and it was a different demeanor there was a different body language there uh on the mound and I was like that's that what that's what Ace are supposed to do you know like they know who who who's the other guy on in the other Dugout and what our guys are are facing that he's got to give the boys a chance and we saw that uh in that outing and he just continues to to do it man like he takes the ball he's going right after people uh not afraid of contact uh just basically the mentality go ahead and hit it and he's getting swinging misses he's getting quick outs and that's what allowing him to go deep in games so in The Dugout that's really interesting what you said are the guys that are in the offensive side of the game when they see your Ace go back out there and shove it right back down the other team lineup's throat does that kind of pump The Dugout The Dugout up even though like they're throwing an Ace and he's got his Ace offu you've got one too so like we're going toe-to-toe and we got this year yeah you're definitely feeling because you know uh when we're on offense it's you know one two three wi before you know you're grabbing your glove and you're going back out on the field but when you're not spending too much time on the field like you're backing the dog I was like okay we got something here so nobody says anything but you could sense it you could feel it uh and that was the case that that that day for the first three Innings because uh crocher obviously came out uh because of his limitations as of late and uh close game uh but again we found a way and uh we got the job done so one important piece of the bullpen Edwin Diaz um who we heard him say either you or Edwin said a few weeks ago that Edwin likes to pitch a lot that Edwin feels like when he doesn't pitch multiple days in a row he almost feels like he's too amped up that he loses control cuz he's overthrowing then seeing him used four out of five days in the last week and seeing him just be able to perform and just look utterly dominant how's it feel to watch him just prove himself right yeah uh it feels good uh and he's always a a a good feeling when you know you got that guy ready to go in ninth um but yeah we we're going to push him here that's why we protected him and some of the other guys to so when you get to this point middle of the penet race you know September every game means something if they are available they're going to be there uh but yes we have to be careful you know we have to still protect him he went three in a row the other day four out of five and then he's now the day-to-day conversations you know how are you feeling don't try to be a hero here you know like we still got a little bit here and um but like I said his ability to take the baseball the conviction uh you know what we saw that last series the way he bounced back after you know I think it was a walk-off uh against Arizona uh in the very next day staying on the attack very aggressive that's a good sign and that's who he is so good good signs there now unfortunately the team goes away on not unfortunately but the team goes away on such a high we get Jesse Winker walkoff and you know for us we're like this is amazing but we can't wait to talk to you about it when you get back Jesse Winker just what has it been like for the impact he's had on this Clubhouse just overall the energy he brings day in and day out yeah unbelievable uh that's I think I said it the other day he fit right in as soon as he walked through those doors when we traded for him he feels he felt like he was he was here since day one spring training you know um he knew some of the guys but he it's amazing you know what he's done for us we know the type of hitter he is he's going to give us quality of bats he's going to impact the baseball he's going to control the strike zone but just the energy uh how much he's enjoying uh being in the line of putting the Mets uniform playing in front of our fans uh you know being in the middle of the penet race like there's a lot going on for him and uh he's been he's been huge for us he has been another outfielder who's starting to make an impact and is going to play a huge role down the stretch we talked about him last night on our recap episode Starling Marte had the big double G gives you the insurance run in the ninth inning on Sunday couple multi-hit games in the last four games I know a little slow coming back from the injury but how excited are you to see Starling getting it all the way back to 100% knowing how much he can contribute to the team yeah he's a big part of this team um we've seen it in the past when he's healthy and locked in he's one you know he's a pretty Dynamic player there's a lot of things that he can do in a baseball field to help you win a baseball game uh but with that being said we still have to protect him you know sure um I don't think we'll see him you know three four days in a row like Day game night game we have to make sure you know the communication but he's been very honest with me he continues to want to hey I want be out there but at the same time I have like we need you throughout September and hopefully deep into October you know uh CU when he's in the lineup he's a deeper lineup and like I said and when he's clicking uh this a he could be a different maker here yeah you took the words out of my mouth him being in the lineup it just you know if he hits sixth or seventh that's a that's a deep lineup and the team gained a little bit of more depth with the addition of Pablo Reyes uh one of the guys called up when the roster expanded by two and you talked about the need for both speed which we saw Pablo scoring from first base on Sunday and versatility Pablo played every infield position with the Syracuse Mets where he had a whole lot of success he's actually facing his former Club this week so that's a nice little quick turnaround for Pablo as he makes his City Field debut but how do you plan on utilizing Pablo to get the very most out of a guy that can really do a lot on the diamond yeah uh in that was a conversation as soon as he uh came in the locker room the other day um you know be ready I seen you i' I've seen him play you know uh in the big leagues and being good last year yeah so um his ability to play multiple positions in the infield but he can also go in the Outfield if needed uh he can steal you steal your base he's can score from first base on a double which that was the case uh when he pin R for for JD he'll give you a good at bad as well um so that's his role for now uh he allows me to be a little bit more aggressive with some of the move uh that I will make because I know I have that extra position player and a guy that can play multiple positions so I feel good coverage wise like if somebody goes down that is already in the lineup I know I got somebody that can go out there and I feel comfortable about it so uh that's that's what we got as of right now like he's got a lot of different ways that he can impact the baseball and help us win baseball games uh and and that's and that's good to have on a team so the other side of that September call up was Alex Young which just had me thinking about how you guys have just found from within the system a lot of these relief pitchers who've come up and just had some really great outings makes me wonder are you yourself paying attention to these guys at Triple A like are you checking in on the Syracuse matchs watching what's going on with those pitchers and seeing who could impact the team yeah uh we are and I also got to give uh Jeremy Hefner a pitching coach a lot of credit uh because him with uh gron craford um our pitching coach in Triple A uh they talk pretty much every day uh they're on the same page what we're seeing here what hey seeing what they're seeing there so there's a lot of back and forth I talked to Dick Scott our our manager in Triple A asking for you know certain guys and you know what they're seeing you know not only the numbers not only what we see on video it's just like what they're seeing over there and uh is it's good to have that type of communication and you got to give them credit so a lot of guys continue to come up continue to get big get big outs for us and uh you know you mentioned the Y and but there's there's a lot of guys that you know been coming through those doors there mean he's for us well it's really cool that you bring up Dick Scott because John and I had a chance last week to go to Lehigh Valley when the the Syracuse Mets were there and we talked to Dicky Scott and he was telling us about like Jose glacy specifically and about the impact Jose had on that team early on and then even Luke Ritter uh one of the guys at the Syracuse Mets was telling us that Jose used to go up to him every day and be like what's your plan what are you doing so are those things that are being told to you like early on in the season were you being told hey we got a guy down here Jose glacius obviously you've known him from spring training already but is he telling you things like look this guy's really an important Clubhouse presence who's helping these young guys yeah uh I remember I think it was early in May uh you know we were struggling and one of those days where I was having a conversation driving into the ballpark with dicki Scott and he was like you know checking in with some of like hey man like you want to put it on your radar here like this guy glaas I know you know him he's been but he's been a Difference Maker here for us like and then he started telling me all the things that he told you guys he was telling me and he was like you know what that's pretty impressive for a guy that is pretty much out of baseball last year didn't have a job now comes to spring training back doesn't make the team you need to go back down to Triple A and for him to have that type of attitude uh you know that's you got to give him a lot of credit and that's what we're seeing since he got here you know he kind of like just it it was a different Vibes uh with not only elaci but some of the the guys but he's been it be you know big reason of uh what we got going here Jose's been on the receiving end of a lot of Luis terr's catcher caught steings and there have been a lot of pickoffs the Mets lead Major League Baseball the staff does with 19 pickoffs so between the catcher caught steings and all the pickoffs it's it's a great formula to obviously keep guys off base and keep the bases empty is it something that you guys focus on and work on ack I don't remember the Mets ever just it seems like you guys are picking off a runner every single night yeah uh he was an area uh or emphasis during Sprint training then you know season starts getting out of the gate teams are running WS on us you know we were last you know uh and you got to give credit credit to not only the pitching staff Hafner but uh Glenn Sherlock who controls the running game like his preparation his attention to details knowing what other teams and the Tendencies and counts different counts that they like to run a lot there's a lot of information and there's a lot of preparation a lot of homework Sherlock's do doing that with the catchers with have have uh delivering the message to the pitching staff uh because it's not a secret now nowadays teams are trying to steal more you know they're trying to put pressure on our defense and trying to create runs and we have to find a way to prevent runs and uh you know proud of the group uh there's a lot of work but we still you know there's always room for improvement and we just got to continue to uh pay attention to details there well we're going to let you get to work because we know we got a big home stand coming up right now uh we're really excited it's going to be really fun September you can follow this podcast on Apple Spotify where have you get your podcast meet at the Apple I'm on Twitter at vfi John at jmb 91 91 and to see Carlos there's only one place to go that's City Field
