year seven yeah man year seven year seven touchdown kicking the extra point something uh Signet did that a lot I was trying to think of a a jab there but there's nothing there yeah so we'll probably listener questions tonight they're actually going to drive our show first time we're doing like a mailbag show it's almost a mailbag show sort of a mailbag SL season preview and then I think so we pushed we were talking about hot takes last week we're going to do the hot take episode sort of mixed in with a Charlotte preview next week because we've already previewed Charlotte pretty significantly I think um so we won't need sort of the the full thing we'll probably talk too deep next week I assume that'll come out by the time we podcast and and um we will also talk charl we'll pumping out this podcast giving a get our thoughts opinions takes analysis everything on JMU as well um you want to hit the right to mailbag show listener questions let's do it man this was uh there's some creative ones in here too people were God okay let let me just quickly shout out everyone who dropped a question this week Dom Palumbo uh hard School faculty member Don Palumbo hell yeah Daniel marman uh Tim Emery Jake Nelson Joey Needum Caleb David Caleb David JMU RVA Justin Reed Christopher I'm so sorry Chris uh nck that sounded good that sounded like it could be a last name yeah Christopher Nock and jam RVA sent a few others really great questions we're gonna start with Don palombos I like that what game on jmu's football schedule should an incoming freshman be the most excited about that will be in bridgeforth this season any honorable mentions in this category before Bennett answers I just got to say whichever one college football game days is coming to so I think I think this one's actually kind of a no-brainer so I'm interested to hear your your take and I I don't want to rag on the home schedule but I think the road schedule pretty incredible as you flip open your filth steel to to make make sure you're not picking a road game or something I think app state is really going to be a good one I think this one I I when the what came out I'm not sure I would have like automatically picked this one because of the day say Marshall to finish the season no I'm so I'm gonna say Coastal Carolina October 10th a Thursday night game which at first I was like oh maybe that's not as great for for crowds or whatever if you're a student the Thursday night game sounds perfect like that would be just an incredible day and whatever Friday classes I had would just probably um not be attended but the Thursday game in the I would assume the night after that that sounds like it's making for a pretty darn good weekend yeah this is why I never scheduled Friday classes I think from my sophomore year on I never had a Friday class that's impressive stuff maybe I had one at sophomore year maybe maybe sophomore maybe it was junior senior year but Co I was gonna say Coastal that Thursday night too because the only the second place one of the home schedule would be Marshall on November 30th to finish the season but like that's around Thanksgiving Thanksgiving break plays in into that breaks in general play into that so probably not as much anticipation the season might also kind of be decided by then depending on how the rest of the year plays out October 10th Thursday night nationally televised game should be an electric atmosphere I know a bunch of people that are going to that game taking work off it should be a blast of a game on Thursday night against Coastal Carolina uh it's also in the middle of the season I mean that's coming off of the North Carolina game Ball State UL you're sitting there maybe with one loss maybe no losses lots of excitement lots of hoopla around that I think depending on how the season goes the Marshall game could be like sneaky most fun for non- col students because they played George Mason and men's basketball the day before on Black Friday and then they've got Marshall at home that could be a nice little fun way to come off of Thanksgiving but if yeah if you're a student right you're not going home for or you go home for Thanksgiving break I think the Coastal Carolina game is just going to be unbelievably fun yeah Dom says any honorable mentions I I don't think so you got Garder web feel like those are the two you would pick right yeah Gardener web Ball State Coastal Thursday Southern Miss homecoming maybe if you're a for a incoming freshman maybe that homecoming game just to experience homecoming um as an Alum I don't mean to sound like a crotchy old man I kind of like what we me and you have done the last few years where we almost like find our own homecoming game and we decide to I think this year it's Georgia State yeah we do just pick a random game I think around that time it's been Georgia State both the years Georgia state has come to Harrisonburg so I kind of like doing Matt as an Alum you kind of get a group of friends together and you make it like that your homecoming weekend because you avoid the insanely High hotel rooms you in you a little bit cheaper yeah and you avoid the crowds but uh probably Southern Miss for a fresh would be an honorable mention those are good ones for sure and then I think I do think as a freshman this I don't think you would pick this number one but the first home game as a freshman is very fun Gardner web gives off like everyone's gone by halftime in the student section Vibes but I do think like that initial buildup probably really good weather on September 7th at least I remember my freshman year is like impeccable weather well what was that good crowd to start how many ages of how many eons ago for you that was 2014 that's a decade right damn trying to think I want to say that was like uh St Francis I think they opened the year at Maryland got blown out and then they played St Francis in a game that like shouldn't have been that close but St Francis you know maybe was competitive but they did give back later with Elijah satat and Jesse RAM and Jesse Ram it's a pipeline really that's why I play that game I think Richmond University of Richmond has a St Francis transfer as well who's like a big-time producer I I could be mixing up my schools but I'm like is St Francis just like the feeder School of better programs some of the feeders are funny remember the year Rhode Island had like three NFL combine guys whatever that was and they were like two and 10 God Rhode Island was a weird team um what was I gonna say what was I gonna say I don't know I think we we pretty much covered every home game disrespecting Ball State perhaps but I was gonna say my first home game I think was Morehead State in 2015 and they blew him out like 70 to three we like that and I was like whoa is this what college football's like and it's kind of been like that ever since uh Daniel marman offense has been clicking recently in practice DO you believe the hype Bennett hasn't seen any of the practices so he's not entirely sure I'm buying into the hype though the hype is hard it's hard to get away from like it won't stop coming it's everywhere just continuous every room is deep every room looks good they love the high energy practices they're clicking it's hard not to buy into it yeah they play the name game it's hard not to buy into uh the offensive hype I do want to see what it looks like like at Charlotte where it's still maybe you got to work some stuff out um but I think the running game's going to be gross I was diving into some PFF stuff man they have three running backs who had a rushing grade last year three transfer running backs with a rushing grade last year of 88 or above which is good nobody on Jamie's roster last year no running backs were at 75 or above so I mean just a huge leap with Iowa day Tyler py had crazy good rushing stats at Holy Cross and then Joby mallerie is one of the highest rated FCS running backs in the country last year with Portland State so you got those guys Wayne Knight reportedly having a good camp Wayne Knight has exited the portal he's not in the portal he could he could find himself getting some plays and then I'm missing someone pedway right the North Carolina transfer George pedway who's really really athletic and talented didn't get a lot of Run for the tar Hills last year but I feel like the running game is going to be there Dylan Morris we've sort of Presumed the starter at quarterback very experienced the receiver receiving room has a lot of talent there offensive line returns of time which we talked about yeah it's like on paper it's pretty easy to be bullish on the offense I think yeah quarterback one Dave rigert said in a interview with the schultzy cast locked on sun Bel yeah uh that Dylan Morris has been taking a lot of the Reps at qb1 through spring practice and and even recently so that's interesting to see from from Dave riger saying that um it should be good I mean so I went into media day last week and I kind of had the same out like Outlook it's just so much excitement there's so much hype can I really buy into all of the hype they're doing something that not a lot of teams have done and had success you know going through this massive roster overhaul and bringing an entirely new coaching staff but then I listened to what Charlotte was saying and I was like maybe they're just saying it to like hype it up then you listen to to other schools specifically you know the week one opponent in Charlotte and Charlotte's over there like you know the fans have to have to kind of be patient we're working some things out and so in my mind I was like oh I guess coaches do kind of tell the truth like they have their way of telling the truth where if they if the coaches didn't love this team they probably wouldn't be saying in public we love this team because it's also kind of the coaches job to like temper expectations a little bit because if if chn's out here going we love this team if every coach and every player saying like this team's awesome we all get along we're all explosive we're all really good and then they come out and they like put up three points against Charlotte like they they understand what they're saying too so that kind of made me believe the hype it was almost listening to Charlotte's antihype that made me go oh I guess I can believe what they're saying especially given the turnover right it would be pretty easy to be like hey like this was a huge roster turnover like we're working through it we're excited about the guys we have but we figure there could be some Growing Pains instead it's like yeah everybody looks awesome so I'm interested to see what happens there and then there's like weird tidbits like I was catching up on a Dave rig interview that I had missed from a few days ago with Logan Kyle and Logan Kyle is a tight end who genuinely believes he's the fastest player on the roster he I think he is the fastest player on college football like you might just have a speed demon tight end to to go can run block that was something that uh Drew Canon Kanan was saying the Special Teams and tight end's coordinator was saying and uh Chris Smith was even talking about the offensive line coach where they're like we expect our tight ends to be able to run block Taylor Thompson he said it in the day riger interview he said it with us when we we talked with him where he had to get up to a certain weight so he could run block better and like that was part of the deal of playing tight end so not only is Logan Kyle a Speedster Logan Kyle can run block yeah he was riger he's checking in close to 240 so he thinks he's the fastest player on the team 240 played receiver I think a bit in high school and then I guess he was saying his Vandy career he transitioned to tight end but started a receiver so he's a really good athlete right they were giving him jet sweeps and stuff running game looks good if they can get sort of decent quarterback play and I think they should be able to I don't know it's it's easy to buy into this roster especially on paper with the different weapons they have yeah um Daniel marman asked another question who out of the young wide receivers are you most excited to see play this season okay I keep contradicting myself are you gonna say Dylan Williams it's Dylan Williams they posted a video I thought come on man I thought for sure I I've been fighting this fight with you are you thinking he's gonna play this year I don't know I don't know I'm most well I think I'm most excited to see him because of the hype and I want to see him in a game so it's not necessarily like I expect him to to get 25 catches this year or like have a ton of uh a ton of um reps even considering how many receivers they have but I'm picking Dylan Williams due to the hype from like reporters around the team so yeah let me see Dylan Williams because I did not have a chance to see the spring game where it was apparent that he was very very good I'm gonna say Maxwell Moss that's a good one too I like him I like him a lot I'm looking at my Phil steel the projected depth chart here is also opened up my Phil steel yeah they have a good depth [ __ ] in that I think taji Hudson cam Ross those are kind of expected guys right but Max Moss is the wide receiver he he lists three starting wide receivers he's the third starting wide receiver behind him is Oman am Mar on doson and Brion Penny yeah I would I don't think it'd be a surprise at all if Max got a lot of run and was a starter yeah I I Maxwell Moss could be in there he was getting some praise from from some players but yeah D Williams been man I feel like everyone's talking about him I'm still not fully in I just I think there now if he plays wow he must be really good because he's breaking through so many what we think of on paper as good players okay sorry to interrupt I kind of would love to see like Dylan Williams oneand one-handed touchdown catch like Mossing a guy against Garder web so like later in the year like a couple receivers like drop a pass where everyone's just like the still Williams we saw him in the FCS game what are we waiting for he's the real deal I don't know if that'll happen but I do think he's going to play in that game and people are like whoa I like really I like it um to memory is there any player on our 2024 opponent's rosters would you choose to acquire starting next year for the rest of their eligibility do you follow that question I did yeah so okay you have to like you have to lose to that team but then you can steal one of their players yeah so a junior this year you'd only get for one year at the cost of an L to that team this year I think the schedule is so favorable that the only team as I read this that I would think that I would even want to take a player from is North Carolina yes and I thought of Maran Hampton at running back who's a junior you would have to convince him somehow to not go pro under these rules Max brown maybe depending on how good Max Brown is Max Brown of Charlotte starting because Dylan Morris is gone and then you put Max Brown into this quarterback room to battle with alono Barnett assuming Dylan Morris is the quarterback one you you then that would be fun if Max Brown's could I think it's um it's particularly fascinating that this question does a really good job of revealing like how favorable the schedule is that there really aren't many teams on here where you're like oh I want their star underclassman or Junior whatever so bad that I would take an L because there aren't many there on the schedule that are like oh I think they're definitely going to lose that game I don't know if there really any maybe North Carolina or AB state would be the two that stand out but even then it's it's a tough question can I say a name yeah that I'm very intrigued in about maybe potentially stealing mhm JC French okay the I'm I'm this is there is an asterisk next to this of course because I want to see how his season plays out but Georgia Southern fans were kind of shocked that he was named quarterback one for Georgia Southern that game is October 19th in Statesboro against the Georgia Southern Eagles I believe Brian Shore's coaching him up I believe he's still an offensive coordinator analyst QB guy with Georgia Southern but JC French he played in 10 games last year only took 40 eight offensive snaps was 13 of 16 122 yards one touchdown one interception nothing crazy Georgia Southern had their quarterback who played a lot of football last year but Georgia Southern fans weren't necessarily the most excited about him I think we talked with h Brian Stone from I want to say it's warm weather fans the podcast which covers Sun Bel in a really good way but he's a Georgia Southern guy and he was just like we don't I mean he's fine but he's not great now they bring in JC French he's a transfer from Memphis he could potentially be good he could potentially be fun but again that's an Asis next to it that's also my way to slip in the fact Georgia Southern they've named their quarterback one was kind of surprised I think he was a underknown name coming into Camp they didn't expect him I don't think he was of the two guys that everyone thought it was the battle between but he ended up winning it out yeah they've got Dexter Williams an Indiana transfer I thought some people might assume he started a couple games for Indiana in 2022 I know his knees have been banged up in his college career so a few of those G5 surprising ones not to get on too much of a tangent you see Boise State went with um yeah Madson it's like madx mad madx Mt man Madson electric name over Malachi Nelson which I think everyone including myself had penciled the F star USC transfer as their starting quarterback you may have penciled him I Sharpie him in your G5 playoff favorite entering the year instead goes with a returning quarterback I thought that was particularly fascinating those two teams play each other week one you know Georgia Southern and Boise State both with kind of surprising qb1 selections was was interesting I thought we'll be in you said they play each other week one they do in in uh Sabo we'll be interesting to see how long both of them go with kind of their surprise pick if they like bail quickly if it doesn't work or something yeah see how it plays out if all of a sudden Malachi Nelson's comes out in the second half or all of a sudden Dexter Williams or whoever else or Georgia Southern see how quick that hook is that's that was interesting but Manson was kind of like he knew the system really well he was impressing a ton I was reading all the reports out of a camp he was taking a lot of qb1 reps he was I mean the Boise State reporting beat was like he's Ballin like he's doing very well Malachi Nelson and then they were like Malachi Nelson has all of this Talent you see he has the tools but like he never fully put it together it sounded like from their reports I was I was kind of shocked by that when do you think Jamie names qb1 when I think the two Deep's going to be dropped with an ore that would be interesting Signet ask I think it's Signet ask just based off of chn's quote at media day just kind of saying like we're not in a rush and then he kind of was joking with the media like we can play two quarterbacks we can do a two quarterback system thankfully the JMU media didn't run with that like the UVA media did when Tony Elliott said that about candry and muset did you see why we're on a complete s here did you see that see that people were like this is fireable offense it's like well he hasn't done it yet to be clear and also it was like a throwaway line like it's this whole paragraph of an answer and he's like you know they're both battling we want to name one we want to name one soon so they have game we but who knows we can run both out there it's like they're playing Richmond game one it's an FCS team I do think I kind of dig this chzn like maybe gamesmanship I think it holds a little more weight than last year where McLoud and Bar were both dual threats who were going to do very similar things I think the offense with Dylan Morris would look a lot differ than Jim's offense with Alonzo Barnett so I think there's actual gamesmanship there when cetti had two like identical skill set quarterbacks it was It was kind of felt like a waste of time but but I think um even he named it before the before the game last year he did it a few days before Bucknell in his press conference he said Alonzo was a guy so we'll see if if chzn goes a couple days before or something like that yeah so to to wrap up Tim's question am Mar on Hampton you yeah you're you're stealing the NFL running back I think also a game that's very like losable where it's like yeah we'll we'll lose it I guess if we can get Hampton he I was looking at his stats I think he ran for like 1500 yards in the ACC last year yeah he's good he would destroy the sunbell can you imagine though he's probably like a 2,000 yard rusher if you give him enough touches 1,000% yeah I don't yeah uh Jake Nelson what are your top three choices for hyp music song as the players get ready to enter bridgeforth pregame this one's all you man my musical taser no I want to hear I think uh Carolina On My Mind by James Taylor Maybe Summer Breeze by uh what SEALs coft and Nash or Camp involved camp with two ways can we do lavender girl please maybe some Noah con some stick season some Tyler Childers follow me to Virgie that'll do it that'll get it get him hype B is that better or worse than the mamore Can't Hold Us mamore Can't Hold Us has been a great song Choice into a bad song Choice into uh why are they still playing this sound Choice has it gotten back to being a good sound Choice song Choice yeah maybe it's cyclical keeps going around um I think something like current I think getting the players involved this is kind of my political cop way of answering a great cop out yeah I think getting the players involved would be really cool almost like maybe even a new one each game because I don't think like the pregame hype up song needs to be the uh like the tradition song you know how like like you could change it week to week or something like unless you're Enter Sandman with Virginia Tech like JMU just doesn't get into the stadium soon enough I believe I think the party's still going on so maybe you let the quarterbacks pick one week you let the wide receiver you let your senior leadership team pick and and they kind of maybe rotate a few songs throughout the season I think what would be cool would be kind of the the third going into fourth quarter hype up song that's a good idea I like that people have suggested Wagon Wheel only if it's The Old Crow Medicine Show version also if you're listening chances are you have some opinions if you have any any uh warm-up walkout songs toss them toss them in the comments we want to see them wow that was the first time I think Bennett ever naturally plugged yeah yeah I plugged I plugged the uh comment section which is very exciting if we didn't mention already like And subscribe on YouTube 30 minutes in like And subscribe for Welcome to the channel 30 minutes and thanks for joining us thank you to everyone uh but yeah I mean drop your song Choices whether it's the third to fourth quarter song Choice whether it's the pregame hype up song Maybe it's what you want to play at your tailgate drop it in the comment section drop it in the replies we'll read it on the show as we as we go along I really like that question Jake I just also kind of feel like I'm not really I'm kind of like listening to music like you which is why I named 15 folk indie folk pop folk songs instead of answering the question a lot of what I'm listening to would make for horrendous like hype up songs Rudy said crazy train that's a solid one I think that's a solid one yeah maybe uh um not like us Kendrick Lamar's dis song to Drake is that still in if that's still in you these days that's true all right you're not that old my goodness Joey Needum in your opinion what are the chances we land at least oh I love this question quick changing gears to basketball get that car checked just got my inspection done man everything checked I don't know about my squeaky gear boox though uh what are the chances we land at least one of the three highly regarded men's basketball recruits visiting campus in the near future and who do you think is the most likely to be a Duke of the bunch if you haven't checked it out Bennett wrote a great article over on jmusports news.com kind of just quickly summing up the three highly rated prospects that are coming two of them have visits scheduled for um this week this week this weekend so two of them have schedules confirmed and they're coming to Harrisonburg this weekend of the three do you think there's one that's more likely to land what are the chances one of them land yeah this is a good question so you've got Preston Fowler who's a fourstar he's like a 68 small forward from Connecticut I believe he would be the highest rated recruit to ever pick JMU then you have jaryan Davis Fleming great name who is listed Jam in his top four he's going to visit toward the end of September if he commits and uh Fowler doesn't then Davis Fleming is the highest rated group to ever become a Duke then you've also got a three star Prospect um and I think it's Christian Brown he's visiting this weekend as well I don't think he would be um in like I don't think he's in the top three necessarily of like highest rated recruits but he's still a really really good player he's visiting App State shortly after visiting Jam he's also got an offer from Murray State some other good mid Majors I'll say he's probably the most mid most likely just because they're not the other two have like big time power conference offers where Brown's maybe a little bit more under recruited so from that perspective maybe he's a bit more likely but he's a really really good player with great size and ability and if Preston spratlin finds a three star he likes I'm inclined to just trust that so I would say Brown's maybe the most likely but I do think Fowler and um uh Davis Fleming both of them visiting is a pretty significant deal and then I think Davis Fleming Fleming visiting on a football weekend is also very helpful where he'll be there during family weekend and I anticipate that making a an impact you when I saw was it Davis Fleming when he released his top five and Jamie was in there with like Auburn Mississippi State he's got yeah he's got LSU Mississippi State Old Miss and jamu and he was just like oh one of these things just doesn't belong here and it's Old Miss honestly but when I saw that I was like oh what is Spradlin doing this man is is cooking he really is I mean this is a level of recruit that you don't see in Harrisonburg Fowler who's visiting so he's told me I was texting him earlier today he says he'll be on campus Thursday Friday and Saturday and he's got offers from Oklahoma State Penn State Wake Forest among some others so he's legit I mean these these guys are all really really good player so if you get any of the three I think you're pleased if you get like two of the three or three of the three you're looking at like by far the best freshman class like in decades forever ever in like the modern recruiting age ever I do think there's a good chance they Le land at least one of the three I do too it just I don't think spadin would be going after them and wasting his time I don't think spadin treats recruiting like I treat recruiting in college football which is just send offers to five-star guys and just hope that they pick JMU yeah if you have people visiting there's pretty significant interest there um a few more comments from the music question from Jake the sole highlight of a Virginia Poly Technical Institute back slashback sl26 Su Saturday I don't know what that means something that we don't know yeah is enter samon the rest is an adventure in mediocrity and unmet expectations lot of hype for Virginia Tech this year we'll see what we'll see what happens I'm all in on Virginia I think they're going to make the college football playoff and I think it's going to be a real is a JMU Fanta watch them do that hey maybe they'll play each other now that would be fun Rudy said serious by Allan Parson's Project love that one I've never heard that oh man you got to really yeah all right so can you read the next question do you have it open hold on let me pull it up this is great no I'm getting there quick I'm getting there quick okay where do we we did both of Daniels we did Tim we did Jake we're at Caleb we're at Caleb okay Caleb's got C oh that's a great hype song Thank you thank you thank you I'll be honest with you I didn't know that was the name of the song Michael Jord okay thank you guys thank you yeah good song okay from Caleb David last year the offense didn't look great until the Utah State game and the defense still had major holes until midle the season the maybe all season will the new staff and players struggle to click early on and then will the product they put out on the field for the North Carolina game be quality enough for a competitive game so he's not wrong I mean the offense struggling is is a word that's hard to say when you put up 436 yards against Bucknell 395 yards against an FBS opponent in Uva 290 against the best defense in the Sun Belt up until that point against tro at Troy and then you put up 512 yards against Utah State so I see what he's saying like watching it you were like you know what I mean like inconsistent for sure it was inconsistent they never really could put teams away I see what you're saying Caleb it's just funny because I had the same exact thought as Caleb did but then I looked at the stats and I was like oh wow that's I guess they weren't as bad as we thought they were right right or maybe they I think inconsistent is a good way to put it I don't know if struggle to click early on like I don't know if struggle is the right word they may not click early on it may be a little bit of inconsistency where you know there's two or three drives and all of a sudden boom boom bam could be could be that um I think the fact that they have so many experienced guys and I think this is a question later on actually is beneficial like they have guys that seem fully bought into the culture fully bought into everything that's happening around JMU you got whether it's Dylan Morris or Alonzo Barnett Barnett is a very old red shirt sophomore and I don't mean that in age I mean like just what he's experienced through college football up into this point Dylan Morris is a very old graduate student he also has been through a lot in the college football World going through Jimmy Lake going through the Michael penck kayin dor time in Washington I think just having those two guys as your quarterback battle could be huge uh Scott J said a lot of that was on McLoud a lot of that was on cetti not trusting McLoud I don't think he was sorry in Sig giving Barnett all the first team reps reportedly in Camp so I think like some of mccloud's in consisten consistencies early in the year probably make a lot of sense based on how they handled preseason yeah ear least part of the schedule Scott said was brutal that's right Buck andell home on the road on the road on the road UVA Troy in Troy Alabama Utah state in the mountains um will the product they put on the field for the UNCC game be quality enough for a competitive game yes because there's a byee right before that that is a month into the season that UNCC game is a month into the season at a month end of the season JMU put up 512 yards at Utah State yeah I don't think you can have a ton of excuses there um I know they're still breaking in a lot but they should at least be competitive even if they don't win that game they should definitely be competitive you mentioned the byee is huge I also think North Carolina like is very solid but it's not like you're going up against Ohio State on the road like you get a bye-week to play what's expected to be probably a middle of the pack maybe like an eight win North Carolina so that's a that's a very doable game to be in the mix with them Caleb also did you do you think they'll struggle to click early on I kind of don't based on what they've said out of Camp I I think they can they'll probably have some ups and downs like any team does but I would expect them to be pretty good pretty fast correct me if I'm wrong on this because this is kind of my Approach too if the running game is good I don't think the offense will struggle to click I think a running game and we can talk to Delvin about this during the podcast next week but it seems more of just like be very good like block well make your reads hit your read hit your hole and go we're passing the passing game almost I a lot more in my opinion timing chemistry things that you need to build taking qb1 reps which according to reports McLoud was not doing last year so yeah Caleb also asked if JMU Gets behind early in one of these first few games do they have the Personnel for comebacks in quick drives or will they generally be better playing with a lead based on the coaching and roster makeup I think any team would prefer to play with the lead I think their running game maybe sets them up slightly to like really put teams away if they have a lead I think they're going to be explosive in the running game though so if you get like I mean if you're down 14 with like two minutes left in the game you got to throw the ball obviously but if you're down like 14 with eight minutes left in the second quarter you don't really have to change your whole game plan and I think they can be explosive passing and running where last year they could only really be explosive passing so I'm not particularly concerned if they get down by a little bit because I think they have so many weapons I think they're pretty good in All Phases I think they have a chance to make some exp explosive special teams plays Force more turnovers in the secondary this year compared to last year so I think they have a chance to go on really impressive spurts so I would say no I would not be too too shocked if they um are able to Rally from some deficits if they find themselves in a hole Yeah they got my guy om Mar on doson they don't they they can do anything just hand it to him and if he continues what he did last year it's either GNA be a first down or a touchdown that's how it works that's exactly how it works that's how stats work yeah uh JMU RVA said I liked how disciplined the cetti teams were in terms of penalties are you guys worried about a drop off with a new staff coming in that has more high energy and wants players to celebrate sneaky fun question here Jamie only had like 40 penalty yards a game last year which would have been like top 15 in the country holy cross last year was like 55 and a half they were like 72 the year before that when they're actually like really really good as chess's best team I'm not too concerned about the penalty stuff um I think like all coaches are going to sort of instill discipline and really focus on that I think chzn will be the same way also like if you're creating a lot of explosives and you've got some some guys doing some good stuff like the occasional penalty here and there is not really going to kill you and then Daniel marman here in the comments is saying uh they've done really good job at least according to Chesney that they haven't had a lot of procedural penalties during the scrimmages so they're really paying attention to the details there I'm not too worried about that but I do think that's actually a very fascinating thing to keep an eye on because Jam was phenomenal last year at limiting penalties yeah uh it is worth noting they do have a very experienced offensive line returning which probably will make up for you know little less holding little less false starts they're kind they've been together a little bit especially that interior of the offensive line so even the left side we we'll we'll keep an eye on taon Wyatt um I believe he'll be good to go for for week one but he did suffer that injury against ODU last year um which was I didn't realize the severity of that injury but he uh that whole left side of the line is played together so offensive line is where you get a lot of your your big penalties specifically holding penalties so and I don't think the to the second part of that question I don't think like them having high energy celebrating means they're going to be like getting on Sportsman likes I think they're just going to try to be like really really positive with each other and high energy but even even then like there's some penalties that are like effort penalties where maybe you're playing really hard and you accidentally grab a face mask or chn's probably fine with it I'm gonna bookmark that tweet see how it plays out like fourth week of the Season quote tweet it what did you know Justin Reed uh do you think the age of the players here here's the question that I was referencing earlier you think the age of the players and a bunch being fourth fifth sixth year guys will help reduce some of the new coaching system adjustment issues that generally happen at schools with new staffs um real quick on this Tyson lton going into his seventh year of college football at Indiana I did the math 14 Marvel movies will have been released from when he started to when he's going to finish and I tweeted I don't know what it says more is that he's been in college football for seven years or that Marvel has averaged two movies per year for seven years a little bit of both maybe yeah maybe uh but back to this question what what do you think does the experience help I think so right if you've some of these guys have probably already seen different coaches especially some of the transfers have gone through some different things so yeah I think that helps I think a lot of the key contributors that are maybe less experienced were already there in the spring like a lot of the guys they brought in through the spring portal have played a ton of football who just got here in the summer so I I'm like I don't think there's much concern there chzn was talking on the first day of camp that those guys were flying around and looking really good so yeah I think that'll that'll help a little bit there will still be some adjustments um it's not the easiest thing in the world to have that much turnover but I think it's going to be fine I think it's goingon to be a lot smoother than maybe people might expect I think they're going to be very good I think they'll be good uh Christopher Nock is there a real quarterback competition what units do you think are the strongest weakest first part of that question I guess first question of the two is there a real quarterback competition I think it's real but I think Dylan Morris will win like I think Alonzo Barnett was given a chance but I think Dylan like my my take on it from the second Dylan Morris transferred to JMU and this was my take on it last year when Jordan McLoud transferred this was my take on it when Ben denucci transferred here and he was battling quote unquote with Cole Johnson you don't transfer to this school as a guy with Todd senteo with a year of Eligibility left without essentially being nudge nudge wink wink the starter right like am I crazy for saying that no especially given Morris's like Talent level where he he could have left Washington earlier decided not to he was like what was he all freshman team honorable mention or something the Pack 12 all Pack 12 all Pack 12 honorable mention okay yeah yeah yeah it wasn't even just freshman team which they probably don't have an honorable mentioned freshman team which would be wild but he was a good congrats you're the 32nd best freshman in the Pack 12 yes he was a solid player in 2020 did some nice things in 2021 then behind Bob Chesney's Heisman winner and now he's ready to go I think yeah the expectation would be that he is a starter so I'd be surprised if he's not the starter I was surprised last year that McLoud wasn't but yeah uh I think the same thing would be said this year if alono Barnett isn't named the starter which we said last year which like means he's probably very good like his talent is wild yeah I think I think when Barnett gets the chance to be the starting quarterback whether it's this year whether it's next year I I think he will make the most out of his second opportunity you spoke to him IM media day it sounded like you said some some pretty solid things yeah I was like the last person he talked to and I think he had been asked the same questions like each stop so some of his question like he knew what he was going to be asked he knew what he was going to answer um I was really looking forward to that that story but then like everyone had that story the the the two sides of the sword of media day that's right that's how it goes uh what units do you think are the strongest or the weakest strongest unit I'm gonna go running back o line yeah that's a good one weakest unit I'm still gonna say secondary I still have some doubts about the secondary I need to see it I'm gonna say wide receiver for the same exact reason yeah that's what we've been saying potential they have it on paper they should be really good uh but I mean taji Hudson nine career catches Camron needs to stay healthy Maxwell Moss young Dylan Williams freshman Brion Penny what 400 yards of receiving last year in an anemic offense lots of guys with Talent lots of guys with potential we'll see if they put that together and become an explosive offense two more questions and the this mail this is good stuff yeah oh wait we got a couple questions in the uh in the chat what position group on defense gives you the most concern still secondary I guess secondary for me yeah yeah I agree secondary I I think again they have the potential I'm super excited about Jordan Taylor I'm super excited about what that what he brings literal track speed and chony Logan would I'm excited to see his his development into year three under Lyall Hill so they kind of but they still give me the most most concern thoughts on the tight ends you got Taylor Thompson Kai Wright Logan Kyle and Josh feifer has put his name in the ring best tight end room that Jamie's had in a decade since I've followed the team I think yeah fourtown said I like the Vanderbilt transfer yeah Logan Kyle at a Speedster tight end who can block it's going to be fun to watch man that is he's going to be very good believe he has two more years of Eligibility as well yeah I think he does which is insane I'm excited for Taylor Thompson coming out party Revenge game it is a Revenge game I didn't ask him much about it being a Revenge game he had a really funny quote though about deciding to transfer to JMU I was asking him about it and he kind of just said like yeah when we lost to William and Mary uh the coaches were fired which not to like pocco hole and Taylor Thompson's story they weren't technically fired right after the William and Mary game I believe it was a few more games later but they were fired before the season ended um everything changed apparently Biff post didn't even call him and he said I got the hint and then entered the transfer portal I'm excited for him that's a that's a good room that's a very good room are we worried about not being as dominant against the run on defense as we were last year in the past couple of years no they're definitely G to be worse against the run right I mean there's really only one way to go after being the greatest in the nation for two years you're either going to be the greatest again or you're not but you would think they could take some steps past defense-wise and still have a pretty good defense is sort of the way we've viewed it so far yeah if if you can take four steps forward in your passing defense and one step back in your Rush defense you're plus three overall your aggregate your your net your steps your step counter I also think step counter my podometer I think be very good against the run like Eric O'Neal is really really good at defensive man against the Run Emanuel Busch in the middle is a monster Chris Fitzgerald's getting a lot of love in there and then the linebackers like dos is just a great tackler Trent Hendrick's getting some positive reviews and then torus Jones is like significantly better against the Run than against the pass like he's very very good did PFF tell you that in my eyes but he's he's very good against the Run PFF confirmed what I saw which is nice to see so I think they'll be fine against the run it's just you're probably not going to give up whatever they were doing last year was like 35 or 40 yards a game and a lot of that was created by sacks too right where you get five sacks in a game and then even if a team runs for like a 100 yards it knocks them down so much but it seems like they're well under a 100 sorry I'm looking at my Phil steel sure I'm I'm flabbergasted that teams ran 32 times against them oh you know why Air Force ran 63 times against them in the pole game which just completely blows the algorithm yeah that that wasn't the best run defense in the country that day but they're missing some guys also Air Force is just a different Beast you were being coached on how to stop the triple option with three coaches good Lu and the Avengers or whatever people are calling them Keys against Charlotte score more points on the I think it's be clinical on offense be I thought the way you were rep phrasing it I thought you had like a almost like an acronym or something I was like so excited be what have I did WOW B clinical C Championship mindset L losers get out of the program I inside Zone c l i n nobody like who's got a better than clinical oh I thought there was a b to start You Gotta Wait from that I get it now oh B clinical um no but okay ke again Charlotte I think being clinical like I've I've been saying it Ryan Osborne's a good defensive coordinator they had a good defense last year so that is going to be a a difficult first game for a completely new team for completely new coaching staff if you can just move the ball methodically down the field if you can average five yards a play like taking out your explosives you're going to be in very good shape just move the ball down the field get yourself into scoring opportunities Charlotte's offense may not be able to put up more than 17 so just don't give them any freebies don't throw a pick six don't have a turnover in scoring position don't I mean in either scoring position don't have don't have a turnover in their scoring position and don't turn the ball over so that they are then all of a sudden in scoring position you just got to be clinical with it you got to do what I mean I sound like a coach control the controllables all of that but I think that's really the key that's the only key just don't be dumb yeah I think that checks out mine would be to keep Max Brown from running TR to prevent that I think he's a very talented Runner I think he's a very talented passer but I also think he's not polished yet as a passer so I think he's somebody that if you make him sort of read complex defenses or you're getting some pressure on him in the pocket and he has to throw it under a little bit of duress you could create some problems there where if he can start to run and not have to think where he's just in the open field running he's very very scary so that would be my key is see if you can fluster the quarterback because assuming Dylan Morris goes you have a pretty significant advantage in experience a quarterback yeah that's all of our our listener questions other than a few that wow we're not going to address what we we talked at the top of the show about the the Tweet earlier that we dropped right before not not really going to go into many specifics on that um on the replay you can watch kind of a the over the the the quick touch the quick talking quick touch that sounds wrong the quick talk about it at the top of the podcast but not really diving too much into it um this that's the only l a question we won't answer yeah all right anything else you got to add I mean no that that took us about an hour which is pretty good we might so next week we'll do we'll probably have some hot takes we'll probably run through the schedule I have them here unless you want to run through the schedule really quickly now in in five minutes no we we I feel like we run through the the schedule like every podcast yeah yeah so let's do uh we got hot takes coming next week which we were exced excited about and a little more Charlotte talk we'll also if we have a two deep we're kind of sickos we love to sort of go into to deep sometimes a little too much but we do our best to to enjoy the to deep talk when we yeah two deeps have have hurt us in the past we love a good to deep it's very true um well for Ben and conin I'm Jack Fitzpatrick this has been the Jamie sports news podcast presented by bet online uh check us out we're on Twitter Facebook YouTube like And subscribe on YouTube atj JM sports news uh and you can check us out on our home on the web jmusports news.com if you like the content if you like the podcast if you like what we're doing uh we'd be very appreciative if you bought us a coffee at buy meac coffee.com Jam sports news um by no means do we expect that we just do this out of the the the love of JMU we love covering the team uh we're excited about PFF this year maybe the unintended consequence of everything happen is that we got our we finally broke down and bought ourselves a PFF subscription I think that one's going to be nice for us to have a little individual player grades not the gospel but something we can sort of compare with our eyes yeah I'm super excited for it man I love I love numbers EPA King over here uh and keep it locked Delvin Joyce's podcast to the house will be coming out next Monday night you can find it on this feed it'll be Delvin breaking down JMU football with uh us there talking maybe I'll just throw in some EPA numbers every now and then we'll see how it goes but thank you so much for tuning in we'll be back maybe sometime next week probably next Tuesday Wednesday maybe we should hash this out on the podcast now should we go we'll have to the house every Monday should we have Jamie sports news podcast every Wednesday that seems like it could work okay okay that was easy look at that I am excited though Delvin Joyce is just an awesome human being from our interactions with him knows a ton about football great dude overall super excited it's gonna be way more popular than the two of us talking yeah I mean this is probably for the sickos and that probably is like for the fan he's so much more knowledgeable he's forgotten more about football than I've ever thought about football we love that guy but he also like he he follows JMU religiously yeah he knows a lot about the team he knows a lot about the sport and general I'm so excited to have him as a resource to to talk to this year you know a funny story and I don't know if he's listening to this part of the podcast but a funny story when he was on the podcast like a month ago and he mentioned Tiki Barber calling it iron pyite I just thought that was like a funny thing Tiki Barber said like ha Tiki you're so funny uh turns out it was Fool's Gold and like that's we processed eventually I felt kind of dumb I had to Google it after the show I was like what is iron pyite and I like oh he's going to make us think he's going to teach us stuff he's going to teach us that iron P right first day of classes Monday August 26 I I'm gonna bring my notebook and my Phil steel I'm so excited all right thank you guys so much for tuning in uh we'll be back next week until then have a great great rest of your offseason
