Labor Day is a federal holiday meant to honor working men and women and a labor movement. Some chose to celebrate this year by relaxing and digging their toes into the sand while others traveled out of town to see loved ones or a new city tonight, we have team coverage. Our Jasmine Ramirez is at San Diego International Airport with a look at the record breaking travel expected this holiday weekend. But we begin tonight with CBS Eight's Anna Laurel whose Labor Day assignment, her work, her job, took her to Mission Beach where she joins us live, Anna, it's been a hard day out here today, Carlo and Paradise. It's beautiful. The vibe is still festive even though the crowd is a little more thin than it was earlier today. But we walked the boardwalk also part of our really hard assignment and met some people from Washington State, Texas. Of course, lots of people from Arizona and you know, the people that I did talk to from San Diego, they didn't mind sharing the beach because we know we live in Paradise. San Diego Beach is so packed, you could barely see the waves through the people Labor Day started early for those who want to get a good spot. I got up at five in the morning, but I was here at six. San Diego is a top destination for travelers to come, spend their holiday weekend. Certainly better than being in Washington this time of year. Usually rainy and a little cooler. We're from Texas and my seven year old just asked if we could move here. I get it. We live in one of the most beautiful cities. So if I wasn't from here, I would come here too. Trevor Romero's wife is deployed with the Navy right now just letting him fish today. I'm relaxing. Today's my relaxed day. He brought their three Children here to play amber Burroughs. Family is supposed to fly back to Texas tonight, but they may stay longer since there's so much to do. My husband and I like to look at the culture out here by looking at records and shopping at really neat vintage stores and just the amusement park was lovely. Spent a whole day out there and just walking the beach. People from out of town are pouring money into our local economy. So bring it on. We actually supported a small local business by ordering in pizza the other night and having a pizza party at our hotel, hot dogs, chips food restaurants, uh downtown, you know the view, the beautiful harbor view when they're not exploring America's finest city they're playing on the beach or even napping. It's great. We love it. Yeah, I love San Diego. Lifeguards. Say this Labor Day holiday is not as busy as our July 4th holiday, but maybe this unofficial end of summer is actually the unofficial start of local summer. So enjoy it. San Diego. But all those out of state people that we met today, they're all going to be traveling home soon. So let's check in with our Jasmine Ramirez. She's at the San Diego International Airport. Jasmine, how are things looking out there now? Well, a surprisingly for today being Labor Day, the airport, it really hasn't been super crowded here. You can see some people behind me getting ready to head through security. Now, we've been talking with people who are returning back home to San Diego and just landed. Now, this weekend was expected to be a major and even near record breaking weekend for travel. Overall. This summer has been one of the busiest for air travel nationwide. Now, San Diego International Airport anticipated large crowds to close out summer. According to TS A Friday was the busiest day at airports. The agency expected to screen nearly 3 million people that day. People we've talked with say their travel though. It's gone smoothly. Airport has been fairly busy. Uh Yes and no, it's starting to slow down now because uh you know, everybody's going back to school and stuff. So it's been light. It's not like a lot of movement. Was it surprising with it being the whole, it was a surprise and right now we have another flight. So let's see how, how we get home. And if you're planning to road trip home, we do have some recommendations. Experts expect roads to be busy pretty much all day today up until 8 p.m. And if you're waiting to travel tomorrow, the best time to hit the road is after 1 p.m. and they do say that the roads will be busy tomorrow from 8 a.m. Up until noon reporting live from the airport.
