UP NEXT IN SPORTS OVERTIME MICHIGAN FOOTBALL USED A PAIR OF FOURTH QUARTER TOUCHDOWNS TO PULL AWAY LATE AND DEFEAT FRESNO STATE 30-10 IN THE SEASON OPENER YESTERDAY THE DEFENSE WAS DOMINANT BUT THE OFFENSE... WHICH FEATURES 10 NEW STARTERS THIS SEASON... STRUGGLED FOR MUCH OF THE NIGHT. OUR TYLER DRIESENGA HAS MORE ON WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE WOLVERINES' NEW-LOOK OFFENSE THROUGH THEIR FIRST PERFORMANCE. THE MICHIGAN WOLVERINES CAME INTO WEEK ONE WITH A TON OF QUESTIONS ON OFFENSE, AND IT'S UNCLEAR HOW MANY ANSWERS WE TRULY SAW IN THIS VICTORY. OF COURSE, WE DID GET THE ANSWER TO THE BIG QUESTION OF WHO'S PLAYING QUARTERBACK. DAVIS WARREN GOT THE START AND HAD AN UP-AND-DOWN PERFORMANCE. THE OFFENSE STRUGGLED TO MOVE THE BALL EARLY AND HAD LESS THAN 100 YARDS IN THE FIRST HALF. WARREN DID LEAD THE OFFENSE TO THREE SCORING DRIVES IN ONLY FOUR SECOND HALF POSSESSIONS AND FINISHED THE NIGHT BY LEADING A SEVEN-PLAY, 75-YARD TOUCHDOWN DRIVE. IT WAS HIS ONLY TOUCHDOWN OF THE GAME. WARREN FINISHED 15-25 FOR 118 YARDS, ONE TOUCHDOWN, AND ONE INTERCEPTION. SHERRONE MOORE REITERATED POSTGAME THAT IT WON'T BE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION AS THE SEASON GOES ALONG, SAYING WARREN WON THIS JOB THROUGH FALL CAMP. HIM AND ALEX HAD A REALLY GOOD TRAINING CAMP, BUT ULTIMATELY HE WON THE JOB. THE LAST WEEK, REALLY. HE WAS JUST CONSISTENT, TOOK CARE OF THE FOOTBALL, MADE PLAYS AGAINST THAT DEFENSE THAT YOU SAW OUT THERE. SO FOR US, IT WAS A GUY THAT- THEY PLAYED HARD FOR BOTH PLAYERS, BUT HE ULTIMATELY TOOK THE JOB AND WON IT, SO THAT MADE THE DECISION EASIER FOR US. I NEVER WAVERED. I NEVER HAD ANY INTEREST IN LEAVING OR GOING ANYWHERE ELSE. I WANTED TO BE HERE. AND OBVIOUSLY THERE'S BEEN SOME UPS AND DOWNS IN THE ROAD, BUT IT DID FEEL REALLY GOOD TONIGHT TO GET THE WIN, AND, YOU KNOW, I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS DAY FOR A LONG TIME. MICHIGAN DID WORK ALEX ORJI INTO THE GAMEPLAN, AND HE THREW A TOUCHDOWN TO DONOVAN EDWARDS ON HIS FIRST SNAP. BUT IT WAS ONLY ONE OF TWO PASS ATTEMPT ORGI HAD ON THE NIGHT, AS HIS IMPACT CAME MOSTLY AS A RUNNER. QUARTERBACK IS FAR FROM THE ONLY POSITION THE WOLVERINES ARE TURNING TO SOMEONE NEW ON OFFENSE. AT RUNNING BACK, EDWARDS IS THE STARTER NOW WITH BLAKE CORUM GONE, BUT IT WAS KALEL MULLINGS WHO REALLY THRIVED IN A LARGER ROLE SATURDAY NIGHT. HE ACTUALLY RECEIVED THE MOST CARRIES AND FINISHED WITH 92 RUSHING YARDS. WE THINK WE HAVE TWO GUYS THAT ARE STARTERS, SO WE'LL PLAY BOTH OF THEM, LET THEM KEEP PLAYING, AND- YOU'RE GOING TO NEED ALL OF THEM FOR THE LONG DRIVE, LONGHAUL OF THE SEASON, SO WE'LL JUST KEEP PLAYING BOTH OF THEM. ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL, THE WOLVERINES WERE AS TENACIOUS AS ADVERTISED. ON A NIGHT WHERE STARTERS MASON GRAHAM AND KENNETH GRANT WERE RELATIVELY QUIET, THE DEFENSE STILL HAD THREE SACKS, SIX TACKLES FOR LOSS, AND A PAIR OF INTERCEPTIONS. THEY'LL NEED THAT DEFENSE TO BE AT ITS VERY BEST NEXT WEEK WHEN THE WOLVERINES WELCOME IN #4 TEXAS FOR A MASSIVE EARLY SEASON SHOWDOWN BETWEEN TWO OF THE BIGGEST BRANDS IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
