Rebecca chapi a Ugandan Olympic marathon runner has become the latest victim in a growing pattern of violence against Sports women in Kenya on September 5th 2024 just days after being brutally attacked Rebecca passed away due to severe injuries inflicted by her boyfriend according to Media reports a dispute over land escalated leading to the horrific incident in which Rebecca was doused with petrol and set on fire she sustained Burns to over 75 % of her body Rebecca chapi was 33 years old a proud Olympian who represented Uganda in the Paris Olympics where she finished 44th in the marathon but her Legacy should have been about her accomplishments on the track not this tragic end Uganda Olympic Committee president Donald rer shared the heartache of many when he expressed his condolences stating May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women Rebecca fought for her life at mu teaching and referral Hospital in eldoret Kenya but sadly her body couldn't recover from the devastating injuries she passed away at 5:30 a.m. on September 5th due to organ failure Kenya Sports Minister Kip chuma merkman described her death as a loss to the entire region he called it a harsh reminder that more needs to be done to combat gender-based violence especially as this isn't an isolated incident Rebecca is now the third prominent sportswoman to be murdered in Kenya since October 2021 these disturbing Trends have brought attention to a dark issue that threatens not only women in sports but all women in society the Ugandan Athletics Federation has called for justice for Rebecca adding their voice to the growing calls for an end to gender-based violence as we remember Rebecca chapi today we must also Stand United against violence in all forms this tragedy should be a wake-up call to address the systemic VI vience against women particularly in the Elite Sports World if you or someone you know is experiencing violence please don't stay silent Reach Out speak up and get help let's honor Rebecca's memory by fighting for a future where no woman has to fear for her life rest in peace Rebecca chapi your fight will not be forgotten [Music]
