he knows the offense is in the great hands of Talia Tonga vioa number three has returned to take care of unfinished business for the turps along with the Roman HMI racing the competition as they set linebacker Jon Barham loose on enemy ball carriers right down to the [Applause] letter dear Big 10 football how we've missed you yeah I'm feeling great baby for 9 months we have been waiting [Applause] patiently for the pageantry touchdown holy smokes what a grab the passion the drama down he goes or you kidding me wow today a new chapter is pinned with hope and excitement and in a few minutes the anticipation is no more big 10 football 2023 here we [Music] go it's Turtle Power uncork at the Shell here come the terrains football on the Big 10 Network is powered by unlet it 88 a gorgeous day in College Park where the FCS tals and tigers have made the 45 mile Journey stepping up into the FBS ring to battle the University of Maryland terbin great to see you again along with Anthony Heron I'm Joe benady Justine wardly joining us in just a few moments the turps believe they are primed for a great season do you see them as an emerging contender in the Big 10 I believe they are Joe and I mean Mike Loxley has not been shy about saying that in his own right as well saying that he believes this team is primed to compete for championships this season and when I see the maturity that's been around this team throughout the week I've called a lot of Mike Loxy games over the years but the intangible is now matching the tangible Talent Marilyn breathed the sigh of relief when they learned that Talia Tonga vioa was sticking around in College Park his enormous talents are critical to their success he is one of the most culating mult dimensional talents in all of college football and it's a big part of why Maryland tan fans have been so excited for him to return for yet another season he's kind of like a unicorn because we're seeing him as a fourthe starter for the same program and so his Mastery of this offensive Mike Loxley system is now matched by adding Josh gtis into the attack as well having his own imprint on what toia Tanga Vala can become all sorts are fired up now how the turps will protect their outstanding signal caller that is a point of of concern early in the season this is a revamped offensive line it's what I'm planning to watch most closely today Joe B because they they had a very deep a very experienced offensive line last season only one starter returns they lost three to the National Football League they lost one to the transfer portal now future NFL talent and DJ glazes will start at left tackle today but aside from that there are question marks that have to be answered the transfer help on the o line has company in the receiving core Justine has more on two more new turps Talia Tonga vioa will get two new weapons in Kaden Prather and Tyrese Chambers both bring a ton of experience to a stacked wide receivers room which will allow Tonga vioa to be more of a deep threat this season and you've got to love the story of Tyrese Chambers has made stops at the J FCS and now FBS level and look out for number zero he wears that to represent the zero offers he had coming out of high school what an incredible journey for that wide receiver Justine he'll be earning respect here at this level very quickly under Mike loxley's Direction this team over the last couple of Seasons Anthony has performed very well and posted back-to-back wins in bowl games they've been exceptional over the last couple of Seasons it's the program has had to grow quite a bit under the head coaching leadership of Mike Loxley and as they've done that we've seen the results improve season over SE season on the field the win loss record having back-to-back Bowl wins that's a huge milestone for a growing emerging program but by reference Joe the tangible matching with the intangible not only the maturity of the players on in the lineup but also what they bring to the table new bench boss for talson Pete shinnik comes in from West Florida and he and Mike Loxley spoke to each other as he first accepted the job it's a talson program it's been extremely successful over the years under previous leadership of Rob Bros talson won the toss they've elected to defer Octavian Smith back deep for the [Music] turps set to kick it's Kaden Williams the transfer from West Florida who came to town along with head coach shinik we're underway of and running from College Park it's Smith from the goal line wrapped up quickly brought down at the 12 the Maryland terapin will ride the powerful arm of tah tongoa in his fourth season with the program the the numbers Anthony are eye popping he's been statistically remarkable and the thing about it is that even though he's the alltime passing leader in so many significant categories the thought is still there that there's meat on the bone for toia tongoa to take his game to yet another level Roman HMI will be the uh tailb starting behind DAV VW who sets up in the gun and right away offensive coordinator Josh gtis goes empty and five wide Quick Pitch and catch Prather spun around and down as we look at the offensive starters Jamal gay made the tackle for talson Roman heni definitely one to watch he is so spectacular in the open field in a bigger back than you might anticipate when you see his speed in the open field we mentioned DJ glaze Delmar glaze at left tackle La newness surrounding him though on the offensive line turps want to work quickly they snap this one tongue of IIA for Ty Felton as we take a look at the Tiger defense Jesus Gibbs has been getting a lot of accolades in the early going it'll be a future NFL player ring up tied initially Makai Smith will be one of their players rushing The Edge as well shafik Smith one of their most experienced defensive backs that talson will have on the field on Third and one straight ahead for the power back Antoine Littleton he'll move the chains for Maryland on a day when talson is without Charles peop it's starting quaring back what turs fans want to look for those red jerseys are they exploding out of their stance with a flatback are they moving the opposing defensive front because this is a good siiz defensive line that they're facing today in talson Littleton remains in the back field Tong of via gives it to the sturdy Runner who brings it ahead to the 34 Dorian Davis there to make the tackle eight yds on the pickup brings up a second and short for Maryland anine does so much damage after contact almost 77% of his yardage last year after contact says he models his game after Earl Campbell you can certainly tell why Tong OFA settles over the middle wide open connecting digest deep into talson territory Tong ioa finds his favorite Target in a new number two Cory dais just made that number change during the pregame today it was a pleasant surprise for Cory daes but no surprise that the tight end for the Maryland terpens is who toia tongoa targeting early in this game a dig route such a matchup difficulty for defenses do you play him like a tight end do you play him like a wide out 43 yds pitch and catch D just with catches in 15 straight protect breaks down come by L fls this one over the head of Littleton as he had company Daniel Raymond was right there in coverage brings up a second and 10 early in this game Joe tiia does look very decisive that's the initial time we've seen pass protection break down and the talson defensive front able to get some penetration into the back field initi drive on a Sunsplash day in College Park at CQ [Applause] Stadium play action Tong ofo at a throw tucks it down he has one Open Spaces toia Tong OFA to the pylon touchdown Turks a 23 yd Sprint [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we know how mobile toonga vioa is it'll sound odd to say that it's almost surprising the first touchdown of the season comes with his legs but it's because he was still decisive in this regard didn't like what he saw down the field because jwn Jones on an out cutting route out fell to the turf then from there he immediately decided to tuck the ball and Rumble towards the goal line a whistle and a flag before the point after try Ethan Goff will snap it Colton Spangler is the holder as you hear referee Tim OD day and Joe that's the type of situation that the past version of toonga aloa may have tucked the ball and continued to try to keep his eyes down the field that can be a good thing for a quarter back but it would lead to indecision and sometimes mistakes how's the red shirt sophomore from Orlando Florida these are his first ever Pats and field goals he knocks this one up and through an early 87 yd drive for Maryland Picture Perfect over seven plays Tonga by Loa to the end zone hits Pay Dirt for Maryland out in front and slapping high fives in a hurry the following is a presentation of the Big 10 [Applause] conference Mike lockley and the Maryland terbin off to a fine start an 87 yd scoring Drive capped off by Talia Tonga Vio as touchdown run but Anthony he was shaken up on this hit by Mason Woods a big hit from that defensive front that got home with their pass rush it will be an attacking defense that Maryland will face throughout this game today from the the talson Tigers and their defensive coordinator Darren duelan saw Tong of ioa there in the middle of his celebration with Prather reacting gingerly they continue to tend to him as hows will kick it off this is well over the head of the outstanding allamerican kick returner Diego Hunter at the FCS level the Tigers they had a very interesting quarterback battle throughout their fall camp and it was won ultimately by Nathan Kent Nathan Anthony was the fourth string quarterback a season ago when the coaching change took place from Rob Ambrose to Pete shenik he actually entered the transfer portal just with the uncertainty around the program but he returned and has now won the starting job coach shinik has said he has the keys to the car they're not looking over his shoulder to make any substitutions right off the bat let's see what Nathan can do first and 10 against the terabit short drop this will sail incomplete the offensive starters for the Tigers talson comes to town with d Kendall James a man to watch on the perimeter he'll be the main target that they'll try to go to in the passing attack up front they have their hands full on the offensive line with a new but a very sizable Maryland defensive front bu be the left tackle their best Diego Hunter shifting gears gets brought down at the 30 Maryland defensively Fuller Phillips and a king bot across the front Phillips already got a big hit on the quarterback the very first snap of the game and I believe that the second level of this defense the linebacker is amongst the best in the Big 10 led by Jan baram watch Bo braid on the back end though he's one of the best in the entire country braid just one of three defensive backs to lead their big 10 teams in tackles a season ago Ruben Hipp FL just made the stop after a pickup of five first down yardage for talson little Tempo coming from talson Maryland hits blocks effectively up front once you get into them though you have to get off that block make the play Hunter scampers to the 39 we touched on Tong of ioa's issues in the first drive there he is emerging from the medical tent on the sideline all of turf Nation will be holding its breath Kent Sprints out chased there by bunan Runs Out of Bounds Isaac bunan third year in the defensive line rotation it's a hot day Anthony the temperatures on the sideline in the high 70s right and especially just the opening game of the season everyone's still working into football condition so between the Heat the depth of these lineups will end up being a story line today projected highs we're in the mid 80s today it's steamy as usual in the Mid-Atlantic region third down and four Kent out of the gun protection breaking down and he's buried Nathan Kent rattle there a loss of seven you can get this kind of heat Joe B we saw it from Jordan Phillips early now Isaac bunan yet again on an additional play getting into the back field they're beefy up front but Brian Williams their defensive coordinator he's continued to work on getting Playmakers on the front line not having the blitz to get home tarhe still drops back deep to receive the punt for [Applause] Maryland TPS on top a 23 yd run from Talia Tonga vioa Justin Ritter a grad student will hit it beautiful punt spiraling to still who takes it with one knee down at the 26 a 42 yd punt back to college park right after [Music] this football in the Big 10 Network is powered by unlad 8 the clean burning fuel Choice that's engine smart Earth kind Anthony the turps like to have some fun and there's Mike Loxley going old school at karaoke night get it coach locks fellas love to P around with their head coach and he's created a wonderful family atmosphere he told us not a single issue at all during the fall camp this team is primed and ready to run you love to hear that during the preseason phase here and you love to see from a Maryland perspective to Leah talk about lower back in the lineup Roman heni is with him in the back field Tung vioa who appeared to be shaking up on a hit by Mason Woods on the opening drive steps in and fires deep has his man in and out of the hands of Ty Felton that should have been [Applause] six these are the types of plays that toia tongoa didn't see as quickly last season as we saw him able to Target it right there put the ball on the money hitting Tai Felton in stride and there is no more talented receiver in this lineup than Ty felt they'll look for that opportunity again that was a point the coaching staff was making with us that they felt they left some meat on the bone with respect to the Deep ball game that was a perfectly thrown pass on the bomb attempt work it to the outside the speeder HMI is there greeted by Jamal gay as we share time here with Justine Ward she has more on Tong of aloa Joe well Talia tuga vioa came off after that touchdown play seemed to be wincing a bit can tell you you he spent several minutes in the medical tent with trainers attending to him but he's back out there seems to be looking okay for now second Drive Justine for kunga vioa outstanding decision maker you see him continually shaking that left hand and forearm dais in motion the handoff stays inside and it'll bring up third and short after the carry from Littleton gets no gain make it fourth and three and a chance for Maryland to send out its allconference punter honorable mention all big 10 Colton Spangler will hit it and watch out excitement in the return game for the Tigers is it fair to say there's maybe not another player you're more excited to watch today than the pun returner for talson I I can't I watch him and I can't believe that he's is able to excel the way he does standing in his stature Diego hunter from the 14th find some room gets wrapped up in flung down to the turf chance for us to step away talson has the football trailing by seven on Enemy [Music] Turf a 54 yd punt from Colton Spangler has helped to flip the field Maryland's off offense cooling its heels on top 7 nothing as we have time for our Auto Owners Insurance impact players and I believe when talson has the ball on offense you won't always see Diego Hunter but when you do he will be electrifying to make for a long day for Jan Barham a guy I see in the defensive player of the year conversation in the Big 10 but an underrated defensive back they've moved tar Heep still from being primarily the nickel now back outside to the corner position he's as good in man coverage As It Gets first and 10 for the Tigers on their own 23 yd line the handoff B bra sticks his nose in there so quickly from the e it's the Midway Mark of the opening quarter Kent to throw over the middle that's high off the hands of James it's incomplete fourth and eight from 25 the fourth and eight will force talson to punt very impressed with the interior defensive pressure along with Anthony her and I'm Joe benady Justine Wards your sideline reporter we apologize for any technical difficulties that you may be experiencing we're here at CQ stadium in College Park season opener for both the Talon tigers and the Maryland Carin just the third alltime meeting between these two schools although they're only 45 mil apart this punt dragging its tail e three spots on the talson defensive line today TPS on second and short biggest play of the day a 43 yard hookup from Tong of vioa and his tight end favorite Target daes staying on the ground picking up the first down it's Roman HMI brought Cory Dias in as an HB becoming the lead blocker here turns into an ISO play that's not where D is is that is most effective is most impactful on the game I guess you could say he's under size for the tight end spot more of a hybrid right at about 220 lbs rocking that new number two today we touched on that earlier Tonga vioa pitch and catch with Jon Jones Jones gets the nose of the football inside the talson 35 Digis stepping into the dressing room today with a very pleasant surprise you got to love that it's kind of like Christmas morning still got 84 on his actual Locker there occasionally the jersey number change reest dets details we'll get around to that by the next home game Another Second and short for Talia Tonga vioa play action set up the screen for digest diges with room to roam brought down to the tals 13 a gain of 12 Dorian Davis made the stop I would imagine Joe there'll be few tight ends in the big taking the shotgun snap from purcel a TD pass for tongue of ioa now with TD passes in 27 of his 30 games and as a Terrain Jack how is on for the point after try Maryland striking in a little less than 3 minutes as you can tell five plays in 238 Goff snaps it Spangler holds and this is right down the center Maryland has the advantage free and easy it's been dious a pain in the neck for the Tigers and a happy Talia Tong of vioa later tonight the fighting elii kickoff the season Under The Lights against Toledo Big 10 football presented by Hampton by Hilton tonight at 7:30 Eastern only on the Big 10 Network and the Fox Sports Act Talia Tong of vioa Plenty to cheer about for the turps this Saturday afternoon in College Park Tonga byoa a 23 yd Sprint to pay dirt and then a 23 yard TD pass and catch with Cory dais setting the red clad terbin on top by two scores Diego Hunter back deep Hunter a season ago two different kickoff returns for touchdowns one of those against FBS West Virginia no chance to return this one this is clean as I've seen TOA tangaloa play in a couple of Seasons the release from his inline tight end Cory daes as daes begins to cross the 15 yd line tangaloa is already into his throwing motion this is how you describe throwing a player open before the safety Dorian Davis even has an opportunity to realize where the route combination up the seam is going to be a threat to him at the opposing quarterback Tong Vala has already put the pass on the money that's where Tonga vioa needs to continue growing seeing it early anticipating the throwing window Tonga vioa in conversation on the sideline Nathan Kent has Devin Matthews with him in the back field and a whistle before the snap delay a game penalty referee Tim OD day backing the Tigers up we talked to Josh gtis yesterday Joe that was one thing he was talking about was to enhance the Rhythm and timing of tongo he's been working on his footwork tying the lower body in with his reads and his anticipation Nathan Kent takes this snap there Matthews to the heart of the Maryland defense Ralph pagee is the center today he helps set the tempo for Brian Shepard's offense on the direction of head coach Pete shinik brought to town named talson head coach in December Trey colber getting involved on the tackle we expect to see as many as 12 different defensive linemen for the turps on this hot afternoon Matthews around the end tracking him down quickly sha gy there to make the stop top a gain of four we haven't yet seen talson run must much misdirection it's been a fast flowing Maryland defense a lot of swarming to the football it's a great thing as a defense to do that how you try to combat that as an offense though is to try to run some misdirection third down and nine talson one for three on third down conversion so far the turps adamant to get off the field quicker this season to improve their third down defense Kent on Third and nine put some touch on this on the back shoulder throw it's incomplete he was looking for Zay Perkins little miscommunication there between Kent and Perkins it seemed like Nathan Kent was hoping to go back shoulder and he wanted a sight adjustment from his wide receiver Z Perkins to break the route off just a bit quicker it's the first game of the season for everyone especially when you factor in the newness of this coaching staff and some of the players playing together for the first time [Music] tarib still drops back deep Ritter will punt off the side of his foot shank that one ball was Goose ahead there and then picked up on the Run by tar still who good presence is ushered out of bounds Talia Tong of vioa on why he remained in College Park feel like we had some unfinished business um with our team last year and uh yeah there just some goals in college football that I set for myself and I haven't reached it yet but I have the opportunity to reach it with one more year so Tong of bya the Marin quarterback record book should just be renamed the tongue of ioa Chronicles he owns it all and stays in there having directed a couple of scoring drives today second Team all big 10 performer a season ago Roman HMI with him in the back field near Midfield on First and 10 tab byoa complete to Tyrese Chambers Chambers is First Catch Maryland is stop number six on his Collegiate Journey and Joe with Tong by loh quarterback I have yet to see him pump the football one time something we saw a lot when Marilyn threw the ball last season where he would pump the football he would hesitate he would be uncertain when and where he wanted to deliver it he looked so decisive today a lot of command on display pungav vioa protected well snaps this one to the outside and a diving catch is made there by Octavian [Applause] Smith time for the auto owners in Insurance impact players we' certainly seen plenty of impact early from Cory daes and at left tackle delmare DJ glaze has been the stabilizing Force up front but look for Mason Woods he's actually the one who's able to get the big hit on Tona vowa earlier in the game that shook up to Leah coach locky believes DJ glaze is a early round first day draft pick in the NFL I completely agree the leader up front playing on the left side now more his natural side on First and 10 give it to heni heni bouncing off of that tackle wrapped up and finished off there by Nick [Music] Haynes Kung of byoa Anthony likes to share the wealth he likes to spread the football around makes them difficult to game plan for seven different pass catchers have had a reception already in this game we're not even through the first quarter yet huge advantage in total yards as you can tell off the play action Tonga vioa steps away from pressure fires over the middle that pass is low and [Music] incomplete and Roman HMI is always really thought of as their best pass protector as a running back he did get beat inside by the blitz that's why TOA toia tongoa had to evacuate the pocket still threw a pretty accurate pass to Octavian Smith shafik Smith there on the coverage Shafi subbing in for the injured Charles peoples today in the secondary for talson one of two so far for Maryland on third down conversions this is third and seven kobby McDonald has entered the game to the left of kung OFA Tigers Rush four Tung byoa climes in the pocket floats this one there to a wide open Octavian Smith he'll pick up the first down yardage inside the and 25 a gain of 12 impressed with the command on the ho being shown by T Tav and here he initially climbs the pocket vertically but vertically but keeps his eyes down the field and then again throws a very accurate pass to Smith Colby McDonald remains in the back field we see shalik knots entering the game to the near side of the field a wide receiver with a nickname punch Maryland's offense has had plenty of punch in the first 14 minutes today hung bya steps away launches this one to the far pylon it's incomplete he was shooting for Tyrese Chambers I love the thought it was an incomplete pass but in second reaction mode Tonga vowa still saw it he still saw the matchup that he hoped for and even though they didn't connect he actually did make the attempt to throw Tyrese Chambers open he threw it towards that pylon in an area where where he still had space available to do so just wasn't able to connect but I love the thought I like where his head's at so far second down and 10 for Tonga vioa who still Anthony appears to be in some discomfort after the hit he sustained on the opening drive of the game Sprints out fires on the Run beautiful hook up there towards the end zone touchdown Jan Jones 24 yds I saw Jan Jones this morning on the elevator he had a really nice fit working had the the vest on some pin stripes working I told him look good feel good there is no doubt here feeling good and playing good for this Maryland offense and his teammates helping him out Kaden Prather maintaining a stock block all the way back In The End Zone after he lost Antonio Howard it was a cakewalk for J Shawn Jones who already has two degrees he's working on his third as the extra point try is up and true late in the opening quarter Marilyn rolling over talson to the tune of 21 nothing music to the ears of Talia so far so very good for everybody on the Maryland side line they are in cruise control in this opening quarter a 21 nothing leader over Diego Hunter and the talson Tigers Hunter will look to get his team a better starting field position should he get his Ms on this one but this is going to soar over his head once [Music] more folks tomorrow you can stream women's soccer live on Big 10 plus the Tigers and the turps Subscribe right now midfielder Katherine Bootsie D roza helping to lead [Music] Maryland last play of the opening quarter Nathan Kent launching himself across the 40 big pickup on the Scramble for 17 [Music] yards we are done with one one quarter of the way through regulation Maryland storming out of the shell and looking very impressive hunga vioa and diges all over the scoreboard TPS on the lead [Music] Talia Tong of ioa with a couple of touchdown passes and a TD run for head coach Mike lockley Anthony he knows talson very well former defensive back with the Tigers Nathan Kent working quickly with Diego Hunter Hunter near Midfield driven out of bounds by Bo braid there's the bio back in the day on the head coach Christmas baby oh yeah exceptional defensive back during his talson career it's one of the reasons that Mike Loxley was so beloved as an assistant here from Maryland and now as a head coach because he is right here from this region Nathan Kent just had his first completion of the day to this man Diego Hunter who's wrapped up and body slammed by Jan baram as we can share some time for more on Mike Loxley with Justine [Music] thank you Joe well you talked about the talson lockley connection and Pete chinnick sharing that when he got the talson head coaching job the first phone call he received was from Mike Loxley who proceeded to invite him to their bowl practice Pete shinnick his eyes lit up guys he told us you know we play each other to start the season right but I love the transparency from coach Loxley I spent a lot of my career covering the Yukon Huskies in Gino Orient AMA who's a legendary coach and he was just as transparent with his practices inviting coaches from across the country to attend Justine coach lockley went on to say I'm rooting for talson to win every game after this Saturday's match up Saturday love that taking over for Rob Ambrose Pete shinnick coming in from West Florida Division 2 National Championship program just a few years ago Nathan K on the Maryland side of the 5050 with a quick slant there a strike to D Kendall James James who does a little bit of everything they need him to do picks up 11 Glenn Miller made the stop for Marilyn more man coverage here on the last couple of series from the terpin in the secondary and that's quickened up the reads of Nathan Kent as a quarterback five wides now for the Tigers Malik Jackson the tight end former Marilyn terpin Kent with time launching this one over the head and it'll fall incomplete there was some traffic with Z Perkins and there is a flag down L interference Defense number three b b at the spot of the foul automatic first down jquan Shepard seemed to indicate he thought maybe the flag was going to come on Z Perkins both players battling for position as Perkins tried to work back towards the inside to work towards the football that's where Shepard's staying in contact with him through the flag first and 10 from the 16 this Pass sipped High incomplete for Lucas Lano Lano a former Wildcat quarterback under the previous regime he's a playmaker and the wide reer spot the windows continue to condense once you get here in the Red Zone inside the 20 an inexperienced quarterback is Nathan Kent have to be conscious of how quickly these windows can close tiger six and five a season to go Nathan Kent throws it out on the flat for Diego Hunter Hunter driven out of bounds by jaquin Shepard Diego Hunter trotting back towards the h the formation listed at 5'6 it's interesting Joe Talon's offensive intentions this season are a rapid Tempo they've gone away from that here after they tried it a bit earlier in the game it's serving them well on this series though third down and [Applause] eight flag penalty marker before the snap they start offense number 61 5y penalty third down Anthony coach has always talk about trying to play a clean game in a season opener it's so difficult to do so without any real pre-season games if you will Maas a jing baruk at the left guard position he does Flinch just a little bit he's about 320 lbs when you start to Flinch those hips at that size the refs are going to see it a jing baruk born in Ghana became a US citizen in January of 2023 this is third and 13 now for the Tigers deep in Maryland territory Nathan Kent plenty of time throws this one high intended for the 6'6 tight end Carter [Music] Rion one of the things we spoke to Brian Williams about Maryland's defensive coordinator if the Run game can be controlled by his front seven that'll free up his safeties Bo Brave Dante Trader to feel more free on the back end to make sure they stay in coverage it's a good example of that right there by the way they've controlled the Run Bo bra has had no concerns about having to run the alley to support it 36 yd attempt Coyle will snap it Ritter will hold and Keegan vaugh will send it on the way and knock it through first points on the day for talson a 36 yd field goal back to college park right after these words folks Quick Clips they're brought to you by Sport Clips and they feature Talia Tong of aloa we've seen the full arsenal on display through over a quarter of to Tanga baloa and this Maryland offense two touchdown passes that touchdown run we showed you there as well multi-dimensional skills it's a part of the reason that he could have opted to go to the National Football League reportedly had folks pursuing him in the transfer portal but Mike Loxley said his relationship with the tong ofala family essentially got the TPS the friends and family discount to keep them here Hometown discount family discount the words that were used yesterday during the meeting Talia tongue of aloa he told you back in the opening quarter we shared that clip of him saying it's unfinished business trying to get the turps more and more into contention for a big 10 title Octavian Smith back deep waiting for the kick from Kaden Williams end over end it's Smith from the goal line Octavian Smith has a seam turns it outside and then gets lassoed down by Xavier Terry 34 yds on the return well you can get this sort of field position for an offense that's been humming in the way that the terens offense has it should allow them to keep momentum going when you have a a lineup that maybe hasn't played together that much but I mentioned in our open Joe the the intangibles of this team the focus and maturity frankly this is where it needs to show up because talson finally fired their first shot they had a nice drive got a score Maryland should answer here it's Antoine Littleton waiting for the hole to develop and it doesn't crack open for him give him a gain of one Maryland has had four possessions Anthony they've scored touchdowns on three of them and you don't want to see that urgency flatten out it was you know the opening quarter of the Season you got all this energy that you come out with the crowd is with you now you feel like you established control of the game but it's only an 18o margin early in the second quarter they need to keep their foot on the gas second and nine from the 35 Tong of vioa Quick Pitch out there for digest Cory digest into the waiting arms of Dorian Davis D just lost his lid in the process pick up of [Music] 15 keeps tiia in Rhythm to hit Cory daes really quickly helmet gets ripped off there late then the head linesmen the back judge they both kind of reached for the flag that said should we and they decided not to Kaden Prather to the top of the formation nearing the 5minute mark of the second quarter hung OFA in and out of the hands there of Antoine Littleton it falls incomplete brings up a second and 10 kunga vioa now 12 for 17 on the day to this point approaching 200 yds through the air Cory dyes Anthony when you check the box score you're going to see him prominently displayed an absolute stud at the tight end position Tong OFA puts this pass in and out of the hands of Tai Felton that falls incomplete INE third and 10 third down and long now first time today that the turps have faced this yardage on third down I would imagine Daren duelan Talon's defensive coordinator will heat up the pocket he likes to 41.5 on third down conversions last year Kung V Hees this one downfield just out of the reach of the diving dais there is a penalty marker down it can get dicey when the quarterback climbs the pocket late especially with as much urgency ring the passer Defense number six 15yd B for the previous first down evades the initial rusher climbs vertically and all his momentum moving forward and then Jamal gray bringing his momentum into the chest of toia tongoa his Terin teammates took exception to it Jamal gay an outside linebacker last year they bumped him inside he's been battling through an ankle sprain in Camp he put a thunderous hit on to Tong of vioa and once more athletic trainer Brian simmer came out there to check on the signal caller who sends Preston Howard in motion Hami Straight Ahead Roman heni inside the 25 another first down pickup for Maryland The Tackle made by Davis after a gain of [Music] 14 Roman heni able to work directly downhill because of the exceptional Zone blocking it's blocked like a counter on the interior but his vision lets him know to get North and South right away things are starting to get chippy down on the field timeout taken by talson on a hot day Maryland's Tempo continues to add up Refreshments all the way around 213 [Music] Maryland friends coming up at the half stick around for the Old Trapper halftime report Dave Jerry and Howard from our Chicago Studios sharing a look around of another busy Saturday First full Saturday of the season in Big 10 play 40 games on Big 10 Network before it's all said and done it's the 10th and final year with East West divisions in the Big 10 just tuning in with us Maryland looking effective on offense already with 21 points on the board the end round for Octavian Smith there is a flag penalty marker on the play hands to face offense number 52 15yd penalty from the previous spot first down the center Mike Purcell got away with one of those earlier that they didn't call he was not able to get away with that one some hands to the face on the defender purcel a late addition to the Turpin lineup got there for Spring ball was actually the it Duke for Spring ball he's reaching he had his eyes towards the linebacker reaches his hands out and just tugging away at the face mask of the nose guard each team has committed three penalties to this point first down make it 25 hung Loa scampers around escapability in the pocket twisting and turning and throws this one away wisely as he was was once again flattened by Mason Woods TOA gets up tman after that hit he's only taken a few shots in this game but when he has been hit they've laid heavy on him this one actually coming courtesy of Mason woods again one of the best defenders for talson throwback linebacker Mason Woods in the estimation of defensive coordinator Daren Duan for the Tigers so much so he you know they're they're saying hey take the single digit number no no no I want 55 nothing cutesy here allot Junior se you know some of those types that you think of back in the day just catching his breath on the bench now the unwritten captain of the defense but remember what Mike Loxley talked to us about is wanting his quarterback to stay neutral emotionally and there's some es and flows to that you love the Competitive Edge that toia Tanga Vala can play the game with his team feeds off of that but you still want the performance to be neutral Tai Felton to the top of the formation HMI in the back field hunga vioa sets his feet climbs the pocket Zips that one right on target we have more from Justine Ward on Talia tanoa Anthony I heard you talking about Talia needing to stay neutral and we spoke to Mike Loxley about that and he says maturity for the fourth year quarterback is better management of his emotions T bya wears his heart on his sleeve and that's that's the biggest change he's seeing in the quarterback can he stay even knowing the team feeds off those highs and lows and Justin to talk about L not a guy who's got a big outsized personality on a regular basis but within the framework of the game he does get fired up he does exort his teammates it's one of those things where when things are going well you want that to feed into the lineup positively when things aren't going well you still want him to be able to maintain a certain level of positivity without his emotions getting low and Mike Loxy said that Tia has recognized that more how the team will follow his example in those situations Anthony the gain of 16 makes it third and nine and during that little delay we watched Andre Stewart be assisted to the sideline for talson third and nine now for tongoa with HMI in the back field checking the sideline now on an adjustment kayen Prather is the wide out to the bottom of the formation tiger show Blitz Tunga vioa gets away on the Run makes the connection there for Jon Jones as he sneaks his way towards the 10 wrapped up but he picks up the first down yardage for Maryland after the gain of 11 there bodies all over the place coming from a variety of angles from that talson Blitz it may be a hold on the turps holding offense number 24 10yd penalty from the previous spot third [Applause] down it's Roman heni again and they've done everything they can to get heni on an island when they bring that edge pressure sometimes it's linebackers it's been defensive backs at times as well from talson and when that happens hbe has tough duty to be able to make sure he's holding up in pass protection Mike lockley says he can deal with the competitive penalties it's the noncompetitive ones that drive him batty this is third and 19 defensive coordinator for tals and Darien duelan said you know what we're going to start blitzing the moment we get on the bus the second we get off the bus now I would advise him not to Blitz here strangely enough hand off to HMI HMI gets crunched by Jesus Gibbs coach Duan and Coach Shin couldn't say enough good things about Jesus Gibbs number eight in the white Gibbs another player who entered the transfer portal for a brief period of time as they went through that coaching change decided to return once he got to know Pete shenck and what he felt like was going to be built headed towards this season for talson how's his first attempt at a field goal will be a 45 Yer kick on the way twisting no good he missed it wide the terpin lead remains 213 as we near the Midway Mark of the second quarter back to CQ Stadium after [Music] this folks next Saturday we are all big 10 all morning with in-depth previews of the week two and and tons of fun directly from East Lancing Big 10 tailgates presented by Tia next Saturday 10:00 a.m. eastern on the Big 10 [Music] Network Caleb weatland getting set for Nathan Kent talson tigers in the white FCS out of the ca the coastal Athletic Association thank you so much for correcting me last night didn't want to go down that Colonial Road lindano is brought down Barry fiser makes the tackle see what the Tigers have done how they've heated up in that last drive at least their best Drive of the game Joe and now they have an opportunity after Maryland misses a field goal to see if they can respond again the miss 45 y the handoff for Matthews he angles towards the 37 yard line stop there Dante Trader gets involved and he will stick his nose in quite a bit along with Bo brade and Glenn Miller from those safeties and nickel positions working quickly again it's Matthews there's a whistle huh the ball stopped before the play the officials were in position to officiate well be placed 31 toson sometimes you go too quick for everybody and that's where I would imagine Pete shenik his offensive coordinator Brian Shepard they probably don't love that that play was blown dead but you do have a player for talson who banged up at the moment the Umpire there spotting the football usually as soon as the Umpire steps away You're taught as a center and an offensive lineman that you're prepared to snap it in that moment Alex Desiree making his wobbly way towards the sideline very powerful at the point of attack but now that talson has reestablished a bit of Rhythm they're coming off of a defensive stop this is where we're seeing I was going to say it even before that snap they will likely get back to some of their Temple especially if they convert this first down look for them to get back over the ball quickly third and one just one of five on third third down conversion so far for Nathan Kent who was the fourth string quarterback a season ago he'll keep it sprinting to the sideline wrapped up and tripped up and finished by Caleb Wheatland that would will be close again very close they're going to give him the first down yardage and here comes the tempo for talson Matthews in the back field with Nathan Kent steps up to avoid some pressure then hook slides to the sideline as weatland was drawing a beat on him again Wheatland very strong in the fall camp for defensive coordinator Brian Williams they're saying it's only a matter of time he's only going to get better and better talented young linebacker last year as a freshman he was most effective as a Blitzer but the more reps he's gotten the more snaps he plays you see the anticipation the read and diagnosis beginning to improve Kent picked up five on the scramble it's second and five as we leak below six minutes to go in the opening half stay with us the Old Trapper halftime report coming up Dave Jerry and Howard from Chicago Kent has time puts this touch pass on the money there the call is a good catch for Z Perkins [Music] believe it's the right call because Perkins did possess it cleanly but you love to finish from Dante Trader forc the officials to make the call and be certain that he maintained possession but I do believe that was the right judgment Perkins one of the bigger bodies of the wide receiving core slides down with a first down pickup right back to workg Hunter Diego hunter gets walloped inside jaquin Shepard was there Jordan Phillips it's had a massive first half he gets his face mask dragged down by the backside lineman Ralph pige they love his work AIC there's a whistle before the uh play was snapped penalty marker down offense seven 5yd penalty second down Matthew akuchi get flag for head coach Pete [Music] shinik a couple of different talson players and that's where he had company yeah this this is not a group that operated with Tempo over the last decade plus with Rob Ambrose as their head coach there's an adjustment happening even with players who've already had experience here and certainly a lot of the newness in the program there are 21 college graduates on this Tigers team facing a second and 12 Kent off some misdirection he gets flatten the the ball's loose the ball popped free was the throwing arm coming forward or was this a fumble the officials sorting things out weatland comes up with the [Music] football by Caleb weatland Gets credit for the fumble recovery that is a crucial critical error from Nathan Kent they called the screen pass you have all the opportun to be able to read that on the run and know the oncoming rushers are going to be bearing down on you but the speed and ferocity of this Maryland defense led by Quan Fuller they bring the heat the officials Ru it a fumble Quon Fuller off the edge very good in the spring and fall camps creating that turnover the Havoc results in weatland picking up the fumble and now Marilyn gets to move from Midfield in bonus territory from the talson 49 talson had confidence established referee Tim OD day explaining that replay official Ken ker wants to have a peek at this that last play as to whether or not it was a fumble or an incomplete pass I do believe this will be close [Music] Joe the momentum of the football itself did go forward little double clutch and then it's loose at what point does Nathan Kent begin to lose possession of the football it's not only about when he's collision by Quay Shan Fuller the defender who makes the hit we can share some time here with our rules analyst in Los Angeles Steve strling Steve what do you see [Music] [Applause] [Music] apologies for the technical difficulties as the officials contined to review the call on the field a fumble the recovery for Maryland's Caleb Wheatland potentially Maryland First and 10 from the T 49 but this review has extended and taken some time it's not an easy one to call right and what you're looking for is an empty Palm moving forward if we would have been able to hear Steve strling I would imagine that's probably a term that he that he was throwing in there you're looking for the empty Palm moving forward and it can be a fine line between that like I referenced it's not just about when the defender initially makes cont the play the quarterbacks are played forward with the ball scoring possession for by R it is an incomplete forward pass the ball turn to the previous spot where it will be thir to 12 referee OD day explaining matters and bringing the talson offense back to the field on a third and 12 and so even though the call on the field was a fumble they felt like there was indisputable video evidence to overturn that call that's Anthony Heron I'm Joe Benin Justine Ward is your sideline reporter just past the top of the hour three cheers for all the men and women in our technical crew football in the Big 10 Network Nathan Kent looping this swung down the sideline for aochi it's struggled out of bounds and caught by Bo bra but that interception was out of play it's an incomplete pass and as Trader came over he was able to grab the football is he still in bounds when he's bringing it in another one that's going to need review because it goes to fourth down talson not in a position to rush over the football and try to force the hand of the officiating crew but I agree though Joe that is definitely worth another look Bo braid hunting for that loose ball tar still is back deep for Marilyn hanging punt still with a fair catch as we review one more time Bo braid along the sideline getting over there no harm no F no interception Maryland football Anthony back at Big 10 media day Mike Loxley made this statement and he reiterated it to us yesterday about his team being ready to compete compete for a title I agree with him you know when you look at the the tangible that he can access with one of the most experienced and productive quarterbacks in the conference yes he's in the same division with Ohio State and Michigan and Penn State but to be able to compete for a championship you have to beat those teams we saw last season they were able to be competitive with them on the field he relates it to habits and behaviors and the players taking ownership of this program that's what has him feeling so confident about them tongoa Quick Pass to the outside connecting there with Jon Jones Jones had one of the three touchdowns for Maryland in the opening quarter a 24 yd catch from Tong of aloa this is a loss of one Jakari Patterson gets his name in the box score the the flip guy in the secondary 17 in the white extremely athletic a transfer from Southern Illinois University second and 11 sticking in the gut of the big back it's Littleton who plays Thunder to Roman hemp's lightning maai Smith makes the tackle one of the things when we asked Michael Loxley about adding Josh gtis into his offensive system he said that Josh gtis as a play caller combines the ratio run to pass as well as anyone he's been around and that's sort of what even though Josh got us very humbly didn't want to say what his imprint would be but Michael Loxley said it on his behalf on Third and seven hunga all day to throw Crossing route underneath picking up the first down yardage Jon Jones with a gain of 10 Biven and rudowski teaming up for the Stop we've seen Mike pce get into the game 94 in the white in the defensive front another who came to town from West Florida along with the new Coach P shinik out of the pistol it's Littleton off the play fake Tung of bya wide open it's drops out of the hands of kayen Prather last couple of seasons for Prather at West Virginia toia Tong ofala is seeing the field as cleanly as I've seen him see it in this game regardless of whether he's face big 10 competition or FCS competition whomever this is as cleanly as I've seen him see getting the ball out of his hands on time with accuracy in Rhythm only incomplete pass has basically been because they've been dropped couple of drops Prather the latest to add to that list on second and 10 kangaba buying himself some time now tucking it down and then hook slides to the turf at the 27 give him five on the Scamper Mai Smith in and around the play again another transfer from Stony Brook he has his degree from Stony Brook Tia got up wondering if a flag have been thrown he was looking at the the line judge there he slid sideways that you're usually looking as one of the officials for that full kick slide where the upper body is going backwards before the official should throw a flag on you being Collision you saw number nine maai Smith Sprint to the sideline to get a breather this is third and five less than two minutes to go in the first half pava shoots it there for Octavian Smith Smith gets bare hugged and lassoed by Daniel Raymond tavien Smith has been one of Tong ofo's favorite targets today Tong of vioa finding number five routinely for 16 it was a one one match up he had to the short side of the field where Kaden Prather was running a fade route he could have attacked more vertically chose to take his profit though and feed it to Octavian Smith just less than 90 seconds remaining in the half in and out of the hands off the fingertips of Octavian Smith it's incomplete taba now 16 for 25 in this opening half that's where to me Joe the way this drive is progressing we see to tongoa still seemingly kind of flexing that left arm left hand a little bit you know no speculation about what exactly is going on but he certainly continues to favor the left side of that upper body from the first drive he was stung by Mason Woods completion percentages for Tong of AOA better than 67 in his career Wheeling away from the pressure of R he'll fire this one out of bounds to the band hunga Loa has been the target for the tiger defense well if you want nothing else as a Defender as a defensive mind you want to impact the quarterback they've been able to do that even though to tongo has been exceptionally productive in this game they've been able to hit him they've been able to harm him and make sure that he's going to leave this field feeling their impact season too Tong of ioa was brought down 32 times Maryland allowed a big 10 high number of sacks that you just saw facing a third and 10 late in the play [Music] clock vioa in the pocket over the middle diving effort out of the hands though of Felton there is a penalty mark down and all out effort there from TY Felton B interference Defense number 18 15yd penalty automatic first down they get Justin Toller here Anthony it was exceptional pass protection from Roman heni that even gave to leot tongoa the opportunity to get this football off Tai Felton trying to disengage from the defender it continue to hang on Felton made a great effort to try to go out and get it full extension style wasn't able to wheel it in time a wasted now 74 seconds remaining in the half the Old Trapper halftime report coming up soon Maryland on top 213 held pointless in the second quarter quick screen out there to Felton Felton gets wrapped up by Dorian Davis Davis who's been all around the football today talson the third different school with which he's worked a pickup on the play of 11 TPS have to move quickly so many bodies rotating in and out from Maryland Joe not only the Back Field the offensive line getting a lot of reps Anthony a new rule the clock doesn't stop on first downs until the last two minutes of the half Pung OFA Zips it there to dais as he was covered up quickly maai Smith in the vicinity even on the interior of the offensive line Joe Amelia Moran rotating with Kyle long Conor Fagan getting the start because got Le a yet J not able to play in the game today this a group that hasn't played together before this game today they'll get more and more experience moving forward but as we mentioned in the open DJ glaz is the only returning starter up front I edj out injured defensive back Gavin Gibson missing today for the turps as well due to injury final minute of the opening half and second and nine Littleton in the back field with tongue of ioa launching this one it'll fall incomplete cther was the intended target Robert Javier was there Javier one of the leaders for the Tigers defense the one thing that won't show up in a statistic that the coaches will see on film a miscommunication Eric Harris the backup center Antoine Littleton the backup running back a blown protection T Vala gets the ball out of his hand so quick that he didn't take a hit because of it but that's one of those things when you're rotating bodies in they have to stay on the same page Anthony the turps are four for six today on third Downs this current drive a little bit more than three minutes worth of clock time in the final minute of the opening [Music] half Tong of vioa sets up the screen to heni Roman heni gets outside Woods wraps him up quickly Mason Woods [Applause] number one in tackles for talson a season to go nine different games with six or more you're always going to see 55 in the picture maryn asks for time we'll take it with them 213 Maryland out in [Music] front terapin looked very Stout Anthony in the opening quarter they haven't scored in this second frame fourth down and short what do you expect here we did see them miss a field goal earlier Chad Ryland left big shoes to fill for Jack how fourth and kind of a shortish two with this much time remaining I like the decision to go ahead and go for it with Littleton in the formation along with Tong of vioa Chambers in the slot to Tong of vioa is right and another timeout has been taken chance for us to take another 30 second break just about set for the late first half action to resume on Fourth and two Talia Tong of aloa and the turps will go for it deep in Talon territory Littleton in the backfield Littleton pounds his way inside the 20 first down Maryland the clock does stop on first downs in the final two minutes of the half Tunga vioa has already gone to the air 30 times today this is his ninth career opening half with 200 yards or better hung by Loa Zips that one the diving effort reeling it in Octavian Smith give him eight yards you want to get speed in the feet of the defensive back and then as Octavian Smith wield around for the football leango putting exactly where he needed to away from the defense terrific catch there the turps call Octavian Smith Their utility guy play a lot of different roles in this offensive set 20 seconds remaining here folks Big 10 plus delivers access to next day on demand full and condensed football replays thousands of non-televised Live Events multi views to watch up to four games at once and a 247 Maryland Channel subscribe and stream for as low as 9.95 a month at Big 10 plus.com a lengthy drive against Pete chinik Squad Maryland getting set for the 15th play of the drive the new talson head coach his team has acquitted itself nicely in the opening half 31 times to the air for Tonga bya already a personal best on second and three short drop Fade to Prather he hauls it in touchdown [Applause] a big bodied wide receiver with a one-on-one matchup Tonga vowa saw it the whole way under no duress he just gave his 64 West Virginia transfer an opportunity to go up and get it working there against Shafi Smith who's subbing in for the injured starter Charles peoples trather 6'4 the height the talent the speed the big playability and a tremendous drive for Maryland as you can see better than 90 yards how knocks the extra point through Maryland has the 23 283 [Music] Advantage fourth score for Maryland the latest 13 yd TD catch from Prather Delia Tong of vioa with his third TD pass of the half making it 283 in just the third alltime meeting turps fans having a whole lot of fun at CQ Stadium on a beautiful day for football dancing going on lot of celebrations about the points on the board Hunter and londono back deep for the Tigers Diego Hunter is going to get a chance here from the goal [Music] line Jitter bugs his way across the tent tries to keep it alive but the turps will swarm him flag today big ants brute Squad looks like this one of the things we love to do throughout the season give me a chance to highlight some of the Big Fellas in this first half Jordan Phillips impacted the game early as disy his teammate Isaac bunan was really a a position group Maryland's defensive line especially on the interior Joe I was curious to see what is the o line going to look like and how much will this dline impact the game on the interior especially Phillips and bunan have certainly made their presence known it's been a while since they've surrendered a touchdown final play of the opening half Reagan administration I think it was right they wish Jeremy spragin there defensively Sean gy we've seen a host of the linebacking Corp for the turps today and so far halfway through the [Applause] festivities the turtles look like they do have some power in this uh football season the three of the four TDS provided in the opening frame as we send you down to field level here's Justine Ward coach T of ioa played that whole half but what happened after that first touchdown you know he landed on his shoulder guy on top of him got a little Nick butt he says he's fine he looks good I like him to not take these extra hits he's trying to extend plays those are the this are the things we need him to either get rid of the ball early run it and get down he's got to protect himself somewhere and we've got to protect them up front a little better end of the half on a high note what more do you want in the second half yeah the goal was to try to score before the half we get the ball back two-score swing and uh I like the the way we finished this half we got few too many drops on the offensive side of the ball but all in all it's been a pretty clean game thanks coach thanks Mike we appreciate it Old Trapper halftime report is coming up we'll be sending you to Dave Jerry and Howard in Chicago to this point it's been all red in College Park [Music] Leah Tong of ioa three first half TD passes this one to the West Virginia transfer Kaden Prather 283 TPS rolling at the break as we welcome you in our Old Trapper halftime show Dave R and Jerry dinardo and Howard Griffith we did not expect this to be a particularly close game it hasn't been to this point but you can still learn a lot in the opener what have we learned about the turp so far no doubt a lot of good but I'm with Coach Lock Lee has got to protect himself right he's he's getting banged around in a game that's going to be one-sided the other thing is tailbacks have carried the ball 11 times Littleton SE uh seven heni four they're going to win the game anyway protect Leah the second half if you want to play him get the offensive line to run block get these two tail backs some some game experience because you're going to need them every game's not going to be able to be won the way we're watching this be won we talked about this team really being able to gain that confidence in this offensive line being able to go out and control the line of scrimmage this would be a big step in that direction particularly coming out in the second half I think the other thing they need to clean up is penalties four for 44 these are things that they need to be able to take care of and and play much a much cleaner game the second half we're the most penalized team in the Big 10 season to go we're seeing a little bit of that but again really favorable early schedule for Maryland a chance to pick up some momentum let's say the first five games imminently winnable you don't want to get Lea Tung of byoa hurts so going to be an interesting decision here in the second half I can't watch unless you run through some of the other I have to it's my job games going on it is indeed yes you've done an admirable job to this point Ohio State and Indiana Cal mord getting the start it's been a little underwhelming frankly this is Mayan Williams for the touchdown but was the Lone touchdown of the first half for the Buckey give the hooers some credit they have slowed the tempo considerably and are hanging around 10-3 they've just started the third quarter in Bloomington Luke fickle first game as the head coach of the Badgers Wisconsin taking on Buffalo Cole Snider the former ruter quarterback to whole herity for the touchdown to tied at seven that's tatter morai hitting Chimay DK here Howard yeah really nice job of coming up with the big play then the run after the catch he protects us put those shoulders down and gets into the end zone led the Badgers and catches a year ago he's got him on top 14-10 still three games to talk about the early action in the Big 10 held some Intrigue and also had some disappointment for a new head coach highlights coming up the Big 10 Network halftime report is presented by Old Trapper what's your beef early action number two Michigan hosting East Carolina JJ McCarthy making his thoughts be known about the school imposed three- game suspension for his head coach Wolverines were just fine with Adam McCarthy to Roman Wilson There is third touchdown of the day JJ 26 to 30 280 yards Michigan rolls 30-3 Iowa and Utah State C back the former Wolverine making his debut for the Hawkeyes it was a good debut of the first pass in fact as a Hawkeye goes for a touchdown to Seth Anderson it was Iowa first opening drive touchdown pass to start a season since 1991 they win at 24-4 Purdue hosting Fresno State this was an exciting game final five minutes boilers down four Devin makab shaking and bakon Purdue on top 3532 but the defense struggled all day they gave up 371 passing yards Mikey Keane hitting Eric Brooks for what proved to be the game winner as Fresno take it's its 10th straight win going back to last year they spoil Ryan Walter's debut 39-35 want to get a sense from those three games anything that stood out to you guys biggest thing Jerry Hudson card for Purdue even though they lost the game 17 for 30 two touchdowns no picks offensive line struggling a little bit we we watch Hudson run I think they're going to have to mix in some decide option maybe one or two per quarter to help the offensive line because the Run game is going to struggle if they don't help yeah I think they also have to do a great job from a defensive standpoint of giving those safeties help and Corners help they were really got schemed today and they were able to take it weren't able to take advantage of it you look at this Michigan game Michigan running the football we talked about how dominant this offensive line is didn't really show up there were many times today when you saw him go first three runs in a row and not get a yard only 123 yards uh today that's not enough and you take out the big run by quorum you're around 85 yards so that's something that they have to continue to improve on nobody's immune to distractions they they've had their full Fair Point and again Michigan we know how dominant they've been running the football last two years they've led the Big 10 of rushing they were 239 rushing yards per game uh a season too when you look at the Ryan Walters and and the loss for Purdue how much of that can be fixed in the secondary well I mean I I you have to study the video a little bit but it looks like they were out matched at times they were in a lot of man coverage if anybody can fix it it's Ryan right that's why he's at do yeah did a great job of course with Illinois led the nation in scoring a year ago and it took some time in Illinois like let's remember year one the defense wasn't great at the outset got better as the year went on Maryland looking pretty good from the get-go here Jon Jones leading receiver from last year already with five grabs including that TD TPS of 25 the Big 10 Network halftime report is presented by Old Trapper what's your beat [Music] coming up our triple header continues Illinois kicking off the season Under The Lights against too it's big 10 football presented by Hampton by Hilton tonight 7:30 Eastern here on the Big 10 Network in the Fox Sports app got one more half to go though from College Park to Leah Tonga vioa accounting for all four Maryland touchdowns they're on top 283 second half next [Music] football on the Big 10 Network is brought to you by Auto Owners Insurance simple human sense and by discover the official credit card of the Big 10 conference enjoying a college football Saturday with you in College Park Maryland Joe benady and Anthony Heron pleased to be with you today as my as Maryland entertains tal and and a lot of the leadup to this game Anthony concerned Talia Tonga by love returning to campus and uh him carrying the weight and all the expect expectations upon his shoulders how did you review his first half performance I was impressed you know it's imperfect a new offensive line people rotating in and out of the lineup in the season opening game and a group that hasn't worked together before but on the whole specific to Tonga Vala this is more decisive than I've seen to Tonga Vala look any of the games that I saw him last season this to me is building off of the record setting single season performance from two years ago this is a quarterback that Maryland fans can have faith has the potential to lead them towards that Championship level competition Josh gtis thought that they might be moving a little bit faster this season and throwing the ball a bit more Tung of ioa with more than 31 pass attempts in the opening half of play against Pete shinik Squad visiting from talson we're just what N9 miles away away from Washington DC 45 mil away from talson you going to run for office or what what are we working on here no but this guy might Diego Hunter oh yeah he'd get your vote there's no doubt about that he can run a long way when we talked a couple of weeks ago that was the first name you told me about Joe you were so excited about Diego Hunter 56 oh okay if you say so not a lot of football players take the FI that you would dunk off let's visit with Justine Ward she had a chance to catch up with Coach Shinn thanks Joe well kenck impressed with some nice plays he felt his team made he wants his defense to hold back their offensive line a bit more as well as on the defensive side of the ball and Tackle better when I asked him about toia takoa and his performance in the first half he said that he was very impressed with takoa how calm he was how poised he was and that he played pretty good knowing that he might have been banged up a little bit on a couple of those to Place Justine it's the Tigers Who start the third quarter with the football we get the action rolling with you football on the Big 10 Network powered by unlet 88 Joe and Anthony upstairs you just saw Justine on the sideline a shout out of thanks to all the men and women in our technical crew both here in College Park and back in the Chicago Studios just the third ever meeting between these two Nathan Kent sends to Kendall James in motion K who won a spirited quarterback battle with sha Brown in the fall camp at toon in fact it was Scott Smith getting involved in that as well he was the opening day starter a season to go for the Tigers facing an early third and six here at the outset of the third quarter just thinking Joe that it would it would behoove T talson to find some more opportunities for aggression for vertical attacks they just haven't been able to find time to do it Nathan Ken's been on the run the entire game coach shinik said they want to get comfortable with him as the starter off the pump fake brings it back underneath Malik Jackson there the Marilyn transfer and he gets drilled Kellen Wyatt the Sam backer for these TPS so active so productive and reliable he's bulked up with bit as well by comparison to last season but he still is really effective in space saw a good example of it right there just Ritter is the punter for tal and he spent the last four seasons at James Madison tarhe still is back deep to receive this will be the fifth punt [Music] still picked it up he heard whistles but there is a penalty marker down still completing the play [Music] play I'm completely sure what the officiating crew what the meeting may be about because it seemed initially like the snap was allowed to continue and the play was blown dead penalty flag on the field so now they're going over updating Mike Loxley on what they're conversing about referee today is Tim O [Music] day all two fouls on the plane UNS Sports conduct kicking team number seven onsports conduct receiving team number 28 the foul was cancel there was an inadvertent whistle Maryland high is elected to put the ball in play at the spot of recovery where it will be first down end up determining it's an inadvertent whistle but there were two flags Anthony I have a message for the uh control room back in Chicago I have no access to our promo copy at the moment just want to let them know that [Music] focusing on the 32 there see the middle of the screen we mentioned that it started to get chippy late in the first half with both teams appear to be punches being thrown [Music] there chance for us to visit with our rules analyst in Los Angeles Steve strling yeah so the the inadvertent whistle the the receiver pointed and did not give a wavy motion if you point without a wavy motion the ball should remain alive and the officials killed it and that's the ruling of inadvertent whistle Marilyn elected to take the ball at that spot thanks for clearing it up we appreciate it Steve joining us in our Studios from Los Angeles is Hami leans into this run brings it out to the 32 yd line pick up of four for Maryland's top tail [Music] back injured talson Defender stayed down after the play Daniel Raymond made the tackle looks like Rodney ran is down on the deck Joo transfer Hutchinson Community College in Kansas chance for us to step away we'll get you back back to CQ stadium in just a few moments Talia Tonga ioa and the turps have possession first possession of the second half and a 28-3 Advantage for Marilyn Talia with the the three first half TD passes Digis Jones and Prather on the receiving end TPS with the football igniting here from the 32 hm's in the back field Hami twisting away from tacklers give credit to Mason Woods there Woods who plays at a very high level the red shirt sophomore from Woodbridge Virginia this is going to be some nice Run game film for the Maryland coaches to evaluate after this game the ground attack hasn't been as dominant as they would hope for a couple of Chunk runs picked up here and there a lot of it from the legs of their quarterback just two yards on that game from heny who picked up 5.3 per carry one season too D Just In Motion HMI again it's Woods who lowers the boom on him but HMI picks up seven and first down yardage for Maryland one of the things Josh G spoke to us about is what I think we see an example of here some of the creativity that Roman heni can maybe access a little bit more this Bend back play if he just hesitated for a moment there was an opportunity to cut outside the block of Cory daes as he came around to seal the corner first and 10 diges will head to the top of the formation Tong Lowa to throw deep shot downfield Felton wrapped up there it's a flag against Javier number three in the white for talson who led the conference in pass breakups a season too automatic first down I really like this blend that we've seen for Maryland's offense today there's been enough vertical shots they've kept the Run game involved a wide volume of plays it's not all executed beautifully but the way that they have a versatility to the play caller when time allows I want you to lend in on the way the offensive line has performed today a lot of concern on this revamp line for Maryland protecting Tong of aloa penalty totals mounting another penalty marker down before that one got to the belly of heni start offense number 17 5yd penalty first down that's the highly regarded freshman tight end Rico Walker big body type who can hold the point of attack in the Run game very impressive hulking figure but he won't draw favorable marks from Mike Loxley with that kind of a penalty backing the turps into a first and 15 High snap Tong of byoa brings it in with plenty of time another deep ball this one hangs looking for Prather it falls incomplete and a flag shafik Smith was there in coverage pass interference Defense number 31 15yd penalty the previous spot automatic first down well they're in attack mode when the opportunity presents itself and one small adjustment that toia tongo has made one thing Josh G spoke to us about wanting to see him get the ball out of his hands more quickly Mike Loxy talked to us about that as well just the growth and development of Tonga vioa as a quarterback not waiting for the route to declare open and then trusting his arm strength interference calls on two of the last three HMI looking for a hole brings it ahead to the talson 30 give him credit for four I thought it was interesting when Josh has said you know we want to develop an identity not force an identity on this offense they are more willing to take deep shots so we've seen today it was one of the least effective parts of what Maryland was doing offensively last season they just weren't able to connect on the Deep ball we've seen that really sort of impose some pressure on the opposing secondary Hami approaching 50 yards on the ground spun down by maai Smith Smith who uses his hands very well defensively Josh gtis behind the glass up in the Press Box looking to add some sprinkles to this scheme I loved it sprinkles jimmies you know whatever you want to call them depending on how you prefer your ice cream the brawls Award winner a couple of seasons ago his final season with the Michigan Wolverines systems the system standards the standard heni ran right into the Open Arms there of M [Music] Woods 283 for Maryland and remember that both gatis and associate head coach Kevin sumlin have come to town and bring impressive resumees Kevin suin has that co-offensive coordinator title and so while Josh gtis is calling the play you get all this experience these resumes added into what Mike Loxley and this Maryland offense could already been begun building paboa screen diges with plenty of lockers in front nice recovery there though to make the tackle Mason Woods has been everywhere for talson a pickup of 14 a well time screen is a thing of beauty to taba draws the opposing defense in that allows DJ glaze and Cory bulock who's been playing some Center in recent drives here a lot of body all over the place playing a lot of different positions up front on delodon helped to finish that one off turps go back to the ground heni cuts it back to the goal line touchdown Roman [Applause] heni I like that cut vision and versatility as a runner as impactful as Roman heni has already been in a young career they've given all these different offensive studs that return from last season places to grow and Roman heni planning that foot getting north and south and then from there finding those few inches that are necessary to continue advancing on the opposing defense well done Hami who had 10 Rush touchdowns a season ago the point after try is good Maryland improves its lead 353 here in College Park [Music] fans the final drive presented by Auto Owners Insurance it Recaps the entire day around the conference tonight it comes up at 11: Eastern on the Big 10 Network CIA Tong of ioa ailing since the opening drive today appears to be favoring that left side has been routinely in conversations with the athletic trainers he and his mates have bolted to a 35 5 to3 advantage over visiting talson out of the FCS some rumors that perhaps his brother Tua may be in the house today this fourth weekend of the NFL preseason that they no longer play a preseason game till has a little bit of free time haven't heard it confirmed that he's here it's another Touchback through the end zone the turps they've had plenty to celebrate today working on those TD [Music] celebrations Maryland terapin finished up last season very strong defensively didn't allow a touchdown against ruter or in the bowl game against NC State haven't allowed a touchdown today to visiting talson tigers and the turps Maryland opening up the 35-3 advantage now as we move deeper into the third [Music] quarter Nathan Kent the signal caller for the Tigers Devin Matthews in the back field Kent tucks it down Sprints to the sidelines he'll jog it out of bounds let's send it to Rick Paso in Chicago for this studio update thank you Joe the new look with Wisconsin offense got off to a slow start but this certainly helped chz maloi goes 89 yards for the touchdown run Maly has over 150 yards and two touchdowns on the day Badgers up 2110 and driving late in the [Music] third thanks Rick Luke fickle making his head coaching debut for the Badgers who've won 26 of their last 27 home openers Devin Matthews brings the ball ahead gets it out to the 34 for talson brings up a third down situation third down and short Maryland riding an 11 game win streak when opening the season against non-conference foes and well in control today third and one for Ken Matthew slashing off tackle right it's tracked down quickly I'm telling you what Joe I understand why the coaching staff is so excited about Jordan Phillips his transfer out of Tennessee still a red shirt freshman he plays with pad level he gets inside hand placement knocks blocker's back he's able to shed I mean there's two different bodies snap in snap out banging him around on the interior of that Maryland defense and he is hard to handle Fuller and Phillips combining there Matthews again pH is a guy who brings that bulk the strength the power and all the while the staff says you know he's learned he's bought into the the pillars of the culture now here in College Park it's not a quick and easy thing you know we we've we're getting more and more accustomed to the transfer portal where a player goes from one environment to another environment has to quickly get acclimated for guys young as Phillips to be able to do this and get the opening start for Maryland and be as impressive as he has the future is bright second and 10 the turps incoming transfer class ranked among the top four in the Big 10 by some Publications Kent On The Run directing traffic picks up the first down yardage near midfield for the Tigers and Joe was one of the underappreciated aspects of that second consecutive Bowl trip and Bowl win that Mike Loxley LED last season Brian Williams the defensive coordinator this talent that they brought into Maryland jaquin Shephard Jordan Phillips Devonte Williams Donell Brown every level of the defense has enhanced Talent they were pretty set at linebacker but Williams led a defense last season we showed that stat well we're now working on three complete games almost that they get haven't given up a touchdown since facing the Ohio State Buckeyes last year a first down throw pitch and catch to the outside for Z Perkins Mo braid nearby for Maryland braid who took such big strides a season ago has that firm understanding of the defensive scheme now in the estimation of defensive coordinator Brian Williams there he is motioning for his Defenders getting him in the right spots Kent to throw this will float out of bounds incomplete another big hit there on Nathan Kent Kobe Thomas was the guy that got in that time I got to admit Joe it's a good feeling as a Defender that quarterback is just loading up to throw the football you know you've closed on him well enough and just in time to get that good impact you'd know it having been the former Hawkeye heavy hitter that you were Iowa Victorious earlier today into the flat for Diego Hunter Hunter skipping loose his best gain of the afternoon the diminutive tailback brings it inside the Maryland 40 picks up nine Lionel Whitaker was there to make sure he was on his way out of bounds it's one of the rare times we're seeing talson able to get back into their Tempo now that they move the sticks Kent flares it out for Hunter again chase down and ripped to the Earth Michael Harris Reserve linebacker getting his name in the scorebook there tremendous diagnosis you know how well Diego Hunter can make folks Miss in the open field he tried to spin Back Against the Grain wasn't able to do against [Music] Harris second down let's call it to 15 here works for me glad Matthews the ball carrier averaged over five yards her tote a season ago led the Tigers in rushing to number three [Music] third and after the pickup of six it's third and nine tigers in plus [Music] territory it's another third and long Joe but Maryland hasn't had to add pressure they haven't had to Blitz bringing additional bodies takes the pressure off your secondary when your D line can get home it was Harris who made the big play the fourstar recruit out of Link Brantley High School in Florida this one FL CED out quickly to aochi Jaquan Shepard has him all tied up you first when you went and saw Maryland practice you mentioned jquan Shepard he's a guy who stood out to you yeah secondary coach is talk about the length the ball skills the ability to attack and jaquin Shepard he's used to working with the prime time Talent he was with s Gardner at Cincinnati Gardner now with the Jets in the NFL fourth down and four a little bit more than four minutes to go in the third quarter Kent out of the gun here comes the pressure Nathan Kent Sprints to a first down pickup for [Music] talson there was nothing there down the field the best decision Nathan Kent could have made run for your life evade some Defenders and then he ends up getting the corner because the pursuit angle from the pressure that was brought off the edge by Dante Trader ended up allowing him out of the box coach shinnick on the sideline for talson hired back in December to run this program not calling the offense wanted to spend a lot of times in meetings and conversations and that included the alumni the the administration and all wanted wanted him to focus upon his jobs orchestrating the entirety of this program I think that was a mature decision Joe when he's he's won at every level he's been at multiple division 2 Programs a national champion coach of the year but it's one thing to be around the block as a coordinator as a head coach as a play caller at other levels but now stepping up while FCS but still division one Pete sh getting this opportunity what essentially is a homecoming for him leading the talson program being a guy from Baltimore but he did come in and immediately say this program will run best if I don't have the responsibility of calling the offense son of former Baltimore Colts linebacker Don shinik coach lockley across the way says you know I have a an affinity for coach's Sons 16th play of a lengthy Drive third and [Applause] two tigers knocking on the door Another Empty backfield set I would watch Jordan Phillips because he has had a field day when that's been the [Music] formation whistles blare out THS coach called the timeout just part of the play clock expiring this will be a 30C team time we can take the timeout along with Coach get you back to CQ Stadium after these messages Anthony have a look at this QB comparison presented by unlet 88 got my eyes on it impressive today passing the football from Maryland quarterback Leah Tonga V Loa and I don't believe that Talon's offense wants to operate with Nathan Kent rushing for 40 plus and we'll see probably 50 plus yards they want to be able to air it out more effectively Tigers Straight Ahead penalty flag was down before the play tarhe still with a Ki young Joe benat nice1 5 third down I mean back in your goalkeeper days Joe were you able to you know Puck goes from one side of the ice to the other were you able to just Kip up and and be in position for the rebound you obviously didn't see me in pre-production today I did that at least twice at least twice I believe it I believe it leasau Kalia Tong of aloa perhaps his day is complete with the handshakes on the sideline Tigers backed up third and seven here Matthews angles to the heart of the Maryland defense stopped shy of the line to gain he'll pick up [Music] two Tonga bya is making his way towards the Marland dressing room unofficially 260 ydd through the air three TD passes the last Maryland touch down a Roman Hemi 9yd TD run that brings us where we are 353 less than 2 minutes to go in the third and a field goal attempt for Keegan vaugh vaugh who made 12 of 18 a season ago hit earlier today from 36 this is 39 and it's good we'll step aside take this 30 second break bring it right back to College [Music] Park suddenly I have the munchies oh there we go this little one enjoying a nice snack with a little bit more than 90 seconds to go in the third in Maryland on top 35-6 see my 5-year-old he has to earn his treats which you know he's usually a pretty well behaved kid so he he's earned his fair share of dipp dots up to this point in his life wisi and HMI back deep for Maryland Kaden Williams the transfer from West Florida Hometown Allen Texas he's supposedly Anthony an expert with a Rubik's Cube like you hand it to him and it's bing bing bing over and done with I've watched some YouTube videos on that stuff I don't get it there's got to be a trip their second time out of their first timeout of the half this will be a 302 timeout timeout taken coach lockley on the prow folks next Saturday Heisman hopeful Marvin Harrison Jr leading the third ranked Buckeyes against Youngstown State Big 10 football presented by Marathon next Saturday noon Eastern only on the Big 10 Network and the Fox Sports app lot to like as usual with regard to Ohio State I believe there's at least three teams in the Big 10 this season with true National Championship aspirations that are in that conversation Michigan Ohio State Penn State who will be on television [Music] tonight didn't realize that Ohio State head coach Ryan day was 31-2 against Big 10 foes opening up with a conference game at Indiana Ando brand wisi watches It Go overhead first and 10 for Maryland from its 25 and a new signal caller comes on it's Billy Edwards who played in seven games a season ago played in some critical situations has a good reputation as a pocket passer these snaps will be important for Billy Edwards important for the Maryland staff they they still see some separation there between Billy Edwards and Cameron Edge the second quarterback in the number three QB on the depth chart but growth from Edwards not just as a runner but as a decisive and accurate passer there may be times this season as you get into Big 10 play we've seen it throughout the career of tiia T Vala where Edwards has to step in shalik knots to the bottom of the formation hm's in the back field little pop pass from Edwards as heni gets stacked up Ernie Smith was in there first on the tackle for talson it's just a pickup of one as we near the tail end of the Third on a Sunsplash day Smith the red shirt senior from Columbia Maryland not far away from where we are in College Park on second and nine Edwards to throw his first pass climbs up in the pocket over the middle that's deflected away the same coaching points that we discussed with banga vioa apply to Billy Edwards as well where the timing of your footwork are what will allow you to enhance your read in and when it's time to get rid of the football it's one of those things that Josh gtis has tried to make sure he's sort of honing in on with the QBs how their footwork within their pass drop as they climb the pocket getting the ball out on time and in Rhythm McLendon was there in coverage Edwards will throw again this will fall out of bounds just the second time today Maryland has gone three and out [Music] 356 Maryland has the advantage sending on the punter Colton Spangler had 12 boots over 50 yards last year his first one today was better than 50 now your future best friend is in trouble because the sun is likely going to be directly into the eyes of Diego Hunter I understand that we wear the same size football pants I think maybe not pretty close whoa a whirling dervish there and finally undercut with Ruben hippolyte staring over the diminutive one it's 356 turps he chinnick and the Tigers in town for Maryland today the Talon Tigers out of the CAA football championship subdivision Nathan Kent at the wheel Kent fires the Kendall James staggered there along the sideline by Caleb Wheatland by rexing Rex Fleming has come on Fleming 41 in the red they have a whole lot of faith in trust in him in the secondary this is second and two another Qui hitter for Matthews picks up the first down yardage near Midfield Matthews opsr operates with a bit more power than Diego Hunter he's the back that they trust more to be able to run it in between the tackles into the tee the defense Tigers marching near Midfield Kent again out into the flat there hooks up with another of his favorite targets to Kendall James stopped by Fleming at the end of three just 15 minutes to go in this one the turps very much in charge doing a little dancing here in the midatlantic Anthony have a look at it come the 2024 season the lay of the land's going to change dramatically different landscape than we've become accustom to over the years the Big 10 certainly a big beneficiary of that but all throughout college football the Big 10 adding four traditional Pack 12 power the SEC adding Oklahoma and Texas the most recent one though just yesterday Now official Cal Stanford SMU all joining the Atlantic Coast Conference Nathan Kent with his protection breaking down and he's swarmed right at [Music] Midfield it's going to be different Joe there's no doubt about that there's a lot to get accustomed to with all the conference real alignment that's happening throughout the sport certainly Revenue a big driving factor most would would argue the main driving factor in a lot of the adjustment that's happening throughout the sport Riad Wilmot getting in the ACT playmaker becoming a more vocal leader for this turps squad third down and long completion there for a first down pickup wrestling for more yardage that's safe Perkins Z Perkins is a player who they've you know looked to continue transitioning even though he's a bigger body guy he'd mainly been a slot receiver prior to this season working quickly Tigers get right back to it there's Diego running up in into the gut of the defense go for it big fella tomarcus kie was involved on the last play for Maryland the number two rated High School defensive back in North Carolina more and more with the incoming classes coach Loxley says you know this program is built around the high school players who are coming to town not the the transfers as much as people might think Hunter goes again CAA special teams Player of the Year number zero in the white Tomia kingbot has been hungry to rack up some tackles today it's third and two Kent flares out and then launches this one to the sideline incomplete pass we're talking about the history made with conference realignment you might have made history a moment ago I don't know if Diego Hunter has ever been referred to as big guy big guy prior to this moment big man out there yep fabulous player to watch it's fascinating among all those giants out there that someone at that stature can compete a and compete at a super high Lev pump return touchdown he had against West Virginia last season that was the stuff of Legends when you really look at how it played out Nathan Kent's 9 of 12 in this half two minutes deep in the fourth he'll throw again with time this one Falls incomplete again looking for Hunter it's a turnover on down it's back to Maryland we'll step away get you back to CQ Stadium on a beautiful Saturday as especially so if you're pulling for the turps a week from today a whole lot of football a triple header of action featuring the Buckeyes Spartans Wildcats gophers and Scarlet Knights it's only on the Big 10 Network and the Fox Sports act today Maryland entertaining talson for you with the football on the Big 10 Network powered by un leted 88 I'm digging the hairstyle on the left Anthony when was the last time you had spiked hair um it's been a while okay been a long while and especially at that Hue that color red it's been a red letter day though for Maryland rolling rolling over talson oh yeah Talia Tong ofo's day is done went off to the dressing room as Edwards connects with Tyrese Chambers Chambers who loves horses good-natured fellow was talking to us yesterday after being brought down by Evan rud CI Chambers said you know loxley's recruited me twice finally got me on [Music] board Littleton throws the stiff arm Works across the 40 to shy the 3-minute mark in the fourth and this player is extremely well traveled of all the institutions that he's played at including Florida International before coming here we mentioned the homecoming for Pete shinik what a homecoming for Tyrese Chambers says this the team he grew up hoping to play for dreaming of being a Turk you were more than interested though in his mom Brenda's lobster mac and cheese mom is a chef and prepares a lot of beautiful meals on Sunday now I started to salivate when it happened Justine Ward I mean what were you thinking when you got to talk to Tyrese about it oh this list was impressive think lamb chops lobster mac and chees collared greens professional chef in the house and his mom Brenda but hey for Tyrese Chambers he came in here and he built a relationship with Talia tug OFA right away he told me the pair likes to talk about life they play chess together they even read Bible verses together so already building some chemistry with QB here in Maryland Justine Chambers went on to say his favorite is the pineapple upside down cake that mom makes now you have a recipe for that as well no I have a different recipe that I want to share with Brenda we we'll talk about that off air because it's a secret family recipe of course goes back Generations have been and out here yes back to the old country Edwards to throw Blitz coming off the edge Edwards plenty of room to run and he will do so heeding the advice of Anthony Heron into talson ter teritory he's very good at running the football he's got some growth to come as a passer Edwards who transferred to Maryland from Wake Forest started against Northwestern a season ago for the turps Colby McDonald's now in the back field his times ticking away with 1040 left in this one Maryland took a strangle hold on the game 21 nothing after the first 15 minutes right in there quickly to make the tackle for talson again CJ McLendon defensive back [Music] by second and 10 now for Edwards Sprints out fires and it's deflected away once more folks Big 10 plus delivers access to next day on demand full and condensed football replays thousands of non-televised Live Events you can multi- viiew to watch up to four games at once and a 247 Maryland Channel subscribe and stream for as low as 9.95 a month at Big 10 plus.com third and long for Billy Edwards Off the Bench sets his feet fires long range too strong intended for shalik [Music] knots outside Defense number 45 five penalty we play third down they flag Brockman Wallace who's put on 20 PBS as a converted tight end of the defensive line whoops there he is a little early I believe Billy Edwards recognized that he had drawn the defense off sides there he had a free play so he decided to go into Attack Mode showing some seasoning having more reps in game action now Tigers figing Blitz there Jakari Patterson 17 in the white looks like he's ready to make a move the inside give not a lot of Running Room Ernie Smith tracking down Colby McDonald after a pickup of two kby McDonald with Mike lockley at the helm in non-conference games they average about 44 points per ball game held below that today by the tiger defense talson their next action the CA and home opener at United Stadium against mouth tigers are eight- one all time against the [Applause] Hawks Edwards out of the gun on Fourth and three oops get out of there snakes is way beautifully picks up the first down yard on it's tackled at the talson 30 a gain of nine now personally Jo B I wouldn't be opposed to Maryland just instituting a Billy Edwards package because toia tang vioa in the four years now fourth season as a starter he tends to get banged up he takes big hits and I think it may beho Michael Loxley Josh gtis to say let's just find some ways to take some of those hits off of our talented quarterback short yardage scenarios run some RPO some read option just to utilize the wheels of Billy Edwards offensive coordinator got have said pretty much that and that Edwards can take advantage of those QB runs in a way that hung of vioa maybe not able to at that size all right 64 220 for Billy Edwards that's one of those things get a look to Josh gatis up in the box there where for him as he continues to learn the skill set of his line of his skill position players of just his offense as a whole what they're best at it was one of the things you referenced earlier just where he said maybe a learning experience from last season in Miami is to make sure he's recognizing what is players are best out McDonald tiptoes further into talson territory brought down at the 14 Biven made the stop it's a pickup of 16 yards gtis says he really enjoys coordinating the offense in his words through the quarterback room something he's done he has not done as much in the past developing a relationship with tongoa and everybody in that QB room as there's a tiger down in need of repair time out on the field will'll step away get you back to College Park in just a [Music] moment football on the Big 10 Network it is brought to you by Taco Bell and by State Farm like a good neighbor State Farm is there Anthony have a look at the members of the Maryland class of 2027 oh those are people down there oh little ants Edwards climbs the pocket has plenty of room with a nose for the goal line he's undercut stopped again on the tackle CJ McLendon Tackle by cjon pickup of nine as we were heading to break Dorian Davis was the man in need of repair from Nathan Wilder and Kyle Cherry the athletic trainers Sports Medicine director directors for the Tigers second down and short plowing ahead for the needed yardage it's Eli Mason off the benching St love too name checking the trainers Joe I like that halfway through this fourth quarter Anthony Eli Mason the sophomore from Ashburn Virginia didn't get into any games last year All State running back at Stonebridge High School twice a state champion avoids the first man but not the next three Tigers Maryland the turps their next game playing host to Charlotte Under The Lights a week from today they ripped the 49ers last year 5621 there no need to continue exposing to leang any addition punishment so that's where Billy Edwards took over but look at not only the Charlotte game it's a Virginia program that's trying to rebuild in the midst of what they've gone through in recent seasons and then they get into Big 10 play second and goal Edwards tucks it down and wide open in the back of the end zone touchdown turs Rico Walker with his first career touchdown there is a penalty marker down [Music] very nice moment for cre freshman early in R leag the prev play second unfortunately score will come off the board Walker who is a midyear en roly as you were mentioning Anthony so he got a chance to go through the Spring ball practices just does look the part there the ability to F both that that inline position but more than enough athleticism see there some soft quiet hands as well Edwards who threw three touchdowns a season ago deprived of that one by the penalty call second and [Music] goal out of the gun over the middle too high looking for Dylan Wade fourth string tight end coach gatis the offensive coordinator said oh yeah Dylan's going to play and play regularly they are deep in the tight end room dais who had a career day today Cory was fabulous hooking up with Tong of vioa for six catches in 108 yards before they shut him down Mason stays in there third and goal a little bit more than six minutes with which to work in the fourth this end of the field in Shadows play action Edwards for Walker gang tackled again first man on the scene was Mike Swain defensively coordinator Daren Duan said you know what we swarm to eat that was their thought process what they will continue to do uh throughout the season in the CAA the coastal Athletic Association will Mary is supposed to be the big dog there field goal attempt on the way up and through Evan Johnson with the field goal tacking on three points Evan gets congratulations turps big time lead time out on the field our good hand play brought to you by All State Anthony it came in the second quarter it was a good read a simple read and then a nice tear drop style pass over to Kayton Prather went up rise and grind style over the defender for the tug 13 yards there for Tong of vioa and Prather one of three TD grabs on the day Roman HMI solid as usual leading the running back stable for these turps as they have taken talson to task it's a 38-6 Advantage with 5 and a have to go the last points on the boards compliments of Evan Johnson's 24 yd field goal and he'll be asked to kick off now Diego Hunter back deep for the Tigers Diego is asking for the fair catch it Soares overhead this is a Maryland Squad with Mike Loxley at the Helm a team that has uh brought in and a program that's brought in some new faces to coach these talented players I referenced earlier the maturity of this entire Mike Loxley organization and adding Josh gtis and Kevin suin has gotten a lot of the the additional media attention but Latrell Scott being a very talented and rown running backs coach Zach babal coming in to help with the safeties in the safety position I think is what makes this one of the more talented defensive backfields in the conference and on the whole just they're all speaking the language of loley at this point he's been able to impact this program for a handful of years now as the head man five yde Nathan Kent spots the Kendall James at Midfield as we send you to field level here's Justine Ward with more on coach loxley's hiring habits thanks Joe loxley's approach on hiring is modeled after what he saw Nick Savin do at Alabama Loxley like Savin doesn't hire just great coaches but looks for fit he saw Savin be tedious about it we're talking seven eight interviews for a role and seek a lot of input when I ask Loxley what that fit looks like he says a few things are important that the coaches can communicate with Gen Z players they can role model what it means to be a good citizen and that they genuinely care for the players Justine he wants his coaches to recruit to manage to develop he says it's like putting a puzzle together think about U where lockley and gtis have worked in tandem before with Alabama Josh Gus on that staff that Mike lockley called The Players one of the top offenses in the country before returning to the DMV as the head coach for the Maryland terpens and you know when gtis first got the offensive coordinator job at Michigan was the same year that lockley returned here as a head coach to Maryland there was some anticipation that perhaps G would join him at that point here initially as his offensive coordinator that didn't end up being the case and there was a little bit of of back and forth there was some sniping would be too strong a term but the media was asking about play calling and about the offensive system at Alabama and I I would say this Mike Loxley in the the way that he has run not only this program but that he has sort of Taken coaches under his wing in general from a macro perspective with his minority coaches Coalition that he's begun he's a guy who recognizes you know Life's too short to to allow Petty things to get in the way of making sure that relationships are reestablished and that his program is in the best position possible and Josh G is certainly the humility that he displayed with us just in talking through things and the impact he wants to make on this program not necessarily being about him it really feels like there's a level of cohesion that goes top to bottom turs Chris watkins's First Carry of the day picks up eight number 26 in the white gets it again get undercut hard as he reached tried to reach that second level he picks up four walloped by keas Thomas time ticking down to 440 left in this one talson stepping up into the FBS ring today with big 10 Maryland couple of field goals All She Wrote to this point with penalty markers down our referee today is Tim OD day offense number 53 5yd penalty first down seconde starter at Center Ralph pige Jr transfer from meramac college in the great state of Massachusetts this will bring up a first and 15 we drift under five minutes left in this one Toledo at Illinois coming up Mark followell Matt Millan Megan mccuan our announced team for Big 10 Network Lucas Lano makes his way along the sidelines driven out there by Levain Scruggs after a pickup of 18 just want to remind you coming up after the game the Big 10 live football post game presented by State Farm it breaks down all the action couple of schools getting involved on Thursday and Friday night in the Big 10 Ohio State picks up a win over Indiana that's 29 in a row over the hooers the longest win streak by one team over another in Big 10 conference history there's a game Indiana Squad no surprise there 23-3 final score in that game some matchups just what ever reason Indiana always tends to give the Buckey a test mentioned Toledo and Illinois coming up first ever meeting for them Watkins bouncing off of a tackler gets spun around and taken to the sideline by chance Harley pick up of six Watkins the third different back we've seen today Diego Hunter and Devin Matthews for talson no sign of Tyrell green Jr just yet third down and four with three and a half left [Music] Nathan K out of the gun plants his feet fires over the middle that's going to be too tall looking for Daniel Thompson coach shinik he always was telling us during the week you know he wants his team to show composure and unity at all times and they have battled all the way from cover to cover today that battle that's one of those things that'll serve them well as they get in the conference play in the ca because it is a very deep conference it always has been and when you're adjusting not only just being a new coaching staff but philosophically Talon's just going to operate very differently now than they have Rob Ambrose and Alum of the program was a longtime head coach after being an assistant coach after being a player with the program had it been success going be a new day for the Tigers though let's step away get you back for the final 3 minutes and change in just a few moments on Big 10 [Music] Network folks later tonight the fighting in line I kickoff the season Under The Lights against Toledo Big 10 football presented by Hampton by Hilton tonight 7:30 Eastern only on the Big 10 Network and the Fox Sports app the Ali have won 24 of their last 25 home openers Maryland fans very pleased with what they've seen progress today the turps to the tune of 38 8 six big time over talson it's underappreciated how much growth has happen with this Terin defense coordinated by Brian Williams that's a part of the reason when Mike Oxley talks about being able to compete for championships this season the growth for this T is deep and the secondary is one thing they are deep at linebacker I'm so impressed what I've seen up front from their defensive line Tigers will go for it here fourth and four Nathan Kent to throw tucks it down fires and that's broken up that pass was intended for D Kendall James gas Thomas the former High School quarterback there playing Corner these days this is a turnover to Maryland on Downs around the Big 10 we have seen number of new head coaches stepping into the spotlight you notice a familiar refrain all in the west division the final season like your reference Joe B of the East and West in the Big 10 Matt rule came up short for Nebraska the other night as did Ryan Walters today Luke fickle able to have an impressive showing from his Wisconsin Badgers so far in their game today Cameron Edge is in at quarterback for Maryland now Edge fires it out there and completes the pass to Ryan Manning Edge the red shirt freshman from Clayton Delaware he's competing for the future right with the with Edwards champ long is in the discussion as well but it's been a tight race for the backup behind Tong of vioa Edge and Edwards 2 a 2B very talented guy as Cameron is not nearly as seasoned as Billy Edwards but they're excited about what the future could hold another pass on target for Manning Manning driving towards the 40 bear hug down by Justin Toller we see Nolan Ray in the back field now for Maryland a speed Merchant from Southfield Michigan thought to be perhaps the best high school running back in that state 25 in the red right there Maryland under control took a 21 nothing lead LED 283 at the [Music] break Ray takes the ball across the 42 [Music] coming up our football post game da rson Jerry dinardo Howard Griffith standing by in advance of our night cap on Big 10 Network Toledo at Illinois defense of injury Justin Toller in need of repair while we have a second we'll make a break for it get you back to College Park in a moment Alia Tong of vioa talking it over with friends on the sideline for Maryland 38 points for the offense another good defensive showing have a peek at the last time the the turps haven't allowed a TD in three game straight you need to go back to 1976 The Carter Administration question mark he whispered carefully Cincinnati Clemson Virginia were on the docket season to go Maryland did not surrender a touchdown to ruter nor NC State and to this point today have not yielded one to the Tigers 137 left be interested to see what Talia says about his physical status after the game today he was railed on the first drive of the game before he scored a 23- yd touchdown run this pass is complete somehow caught out of the pack but there's a whistle the officials are going to say it's out of bounds was caught out of bounds my guess would be on the status update for Tia I I think it's complicated will likely be some form of that mhm says manky was the intended target came all the way through right foot was out of bounds good call by the line judge there through the Sea of hands Robert Smith snap tagged it but it does not count Cameron Edge in at quarterback on the delay there's no room at all Rodney ran Jr along with Anthony delodon combining to make the stop I like Maryland out of the pistol I feel like that will likely be a big backfield set for them this season with the back in a neutral position directly behind the quarterback who's in a a shorter shotgun formation but you can still set up the play action opportunities in the way to leoa saw the field today if that continues then there's going to be chunk plays Galore I believe for the turs there were a couple that were dropped right big plays that were potential touchdown scoring plays that didn't connect Edge on his way down rone in there swiftly Rumbi in there as well Rodney ran had four tackles for a loss last year Junior College trans transfer akum will check out both teams have played a lot of personnel as we get into the final 45 ticks of this one a lot of it certainly by Design Michael Loxley wants to see that on both offense and defense with the tempo they try to attack people with on each side of the ball just keep a a rolling volume of bodies coming at you to sustain Spangler hits this one spiraling boot Diego Hunter fair catches at the 17 21 seconds left from Victory Lane coach Loxley having a good time with his mates on the sideline we'll hear from the coach in the aftermath of this one you good teaching film here the best position the coach could be in after game one there don't appear to be any major injur obviously question mark onto leango whatever concerns there but seem to be a decision to pull him out not a necessity once the game was in hand but especially on the line of scrimmage the offensive line with new fresh bodies in there rotating through they're going to be able to teach really well off this T turps were missing got Le by edj from the offensive line today due to injury final ticks coming off the board now Maryland's thirdd ever meeting with the Tigers they're about to 3 and0 this one in the win column by the final of 386 the end of theball game 12 times in a row with a non-conference opener in the bank it's the second longest active streak in all the Big 10 coach lockley squaring off against his alma mater handshake there for a man he respects greatly and and Pete shinik there's a a mutual admiration between those two and Coach lockley says the guy's a winner he's going to turn the things in Good Fortune for talson he's done it at every other previous destination he's been at has Pete shenck and now Michael Loxley has been able to mold this Maryland program in His image talks about competing for championships there's not a doubt in my mind this Maryland Squad is going to be a difficult out for anyone they face when they take the field they get Charlotte next week under the light here their first three games of the season are played here at CQ Stadium all the non-conference action talson Charlotte and Virginia Marilyn Downing talson today Justine ward has Mike lockley nearby coach talia's day was done in the third quarter but how do you evaluate his start to the season I thought he started out really well um hit some hit some big plays we missed a couple but you know we worked really hard on the Deep ball and he he had a couple early on that should have been catches but I like like the way he played Force you know just got to clean up some of the stuff how do you build on this moving forward game one in the books got a big win yeah it's always good to be able to play a lot of players and today we're able to play a lot of players what we've got to do is get in there watch the tape uh some of these young players made mistakes when they had opportunities we'll get those things corrected and then you know it's our thoughts are on Charlotte now what will you be looking for in this next week when you go to review those tapes I think the biggest thing our biggest jump is usually from game one to game two I like to see us just clean up the things that the self-inflicted wounds on offense defensively probably they gave up a little too much uh uh rushing yards didn't get the turnovers that we need to get but all in all was a good game for the turs really excited for us thanks coach congrats on the win thanks back to you Jo Justine and Mike we appreciate the Insight it turns out to be a happy Labor Day weekend for coach loley and Talia Tong of ioa and those dressed in red a 386 win for Maryland that's going to wrap it up for us from College Park coming up next big 10 live football post game is presented by State Farm for Anthony for Justine for all the men and women in our
