Compton wasn't easy though Lamar has spoken about witnessing his first murder at just 5 years old right in front of the the apartment complex where he lived just 3 years later he saw another man gunned down at a local fast food joint these traumatic experiences left an indelible mark on the young boy shaping the worldview that would later influence his music but even in the midst of all this Darkness there were moments of light Lamar fondly recalls cruising around on bikes with his friends and the Epic House Parties his parents through he also vividly remembers being mesmerized by the filming of Dr Dre and two pac's iconic music video for California Love right in his neighborhood little did he know he was watching The Legends who would Inspire his future career despite growing up surrounded by violence Lamar found solace in words though he had a stutter as a child his seventh grade English teacher Mr Ina introduced him to poetry and that's when Kendrick discovered his love for language he started writing as a way to express his deepest thoughts and feelings even though he wasn't always confident enough to share them over the years those thoughts turned into songs and eventually he began releasing music under the name Cade in 2005 as a teenager Lamar signed with Top Dog entertainment and formed the hip-hop superg group black hippie alongside fellow west coast rappers abso Jrock and school boy Q but it wasn't until 2011 with the release of his debut album section 80 that he truly started Making Waves the success of that album led him to work with none other than Dr Dre on his sophomore album good kid kid Mad City the rest as they say is history fast forward to today and Lamar's list of achievements is staggering he's dropped critically acclaimed albums to Taylor Swift and yet it's his interactions with fellow rappers that have sparked some of the most memorable moments in hip-hop history enter Drake back in 2011 Kendrick appeared on Drake's album take care on the track buried alive interlude at the time both artists were still carving their paths in the industry Drake was best known for his role on deg Grassi while Kendrick was beginning to make a name for himself in rap the two even collaborated on Poetic Justice from Lamar's good kid Mad City but somewhere along the way the Friendship fizzled out things really took off in 2013 when Lamar delivered a fiery verse on big Sha's track control where he named checked Drake and several other artists claiming he was out to murder them professionally speaking of course Drake responded with a nonchalant shrug saying it was just Kendrick being ambitious but the tension had already started building over the years the two continued taking subtle shots at each other until 2023 when Jay Cole teamed up with Drake on the track firstperson shooter referring to himself Lamar and Drake as the big three of rap Drake took it a step further comparing his own Fame to the legendary Michael Jackson but Kendrick wasn't having any of it in March 2024 Lamar fired back with a track called like that a collaboration with future and Metro boomman on the song Kendrick made it Crystal Clear there's no big three only big me he even drew a comparison between himself as Prince and Drake as Michael Jackson implying that Prince ultimately outlasted the King of Pop from there things escalated Drake responded with a Dis Track called push-ups poking fun at Lamar's collaborations with pop stars like Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift Kendrick in turn dropped Euphoria and 616 in La firing more shots at Drake's signature Style of naming tracks after times and places then Drake took it even further with the brutal 8-minute Dis Track Family Matters where he made accusations about Lamar's personal life specifically targeting his fiance Whitney Alfred but Lamar wasn't one to back down within the hour he released meet the Grahams turning the tables on Drake by addressing the rapper's own family and parenting the battle raged on with each artist dropping disc after disc but it was Kendrick's track not like us that ultimately became the song of the summer shattering streaming records and dominating the charts the music video even featured Lamar's fiance and their two kids making it a powerful counter to Drake's earlier allegations and now Kendrick Lamar is set to take the Super Bowl
