Lawrence to Zack Brown this is inside Carolina Live and now the hosts of inside Carolina Live Joey Powell and Tommy Ashley down oh W you please take me home take down the [Applause] The Rose get us hype a little bit huh we just we just you know we faded Axel out I was getting ready to let Axel ride I'm Joey Powell inside Carolina Live coming at you from the BS lot on a chamber of freaking Commerce day hope y'all have enjoyed your week have enjoyed uh have enjoyed getting ready for for this this home festive beautiful day here in uh in beautiful Chapel Hill Tommy Ashley how are you sir man I don't even know how to do this anymore I I can't put this thing on my head what are you you've been on HGH what's going on it's good to be with you guys yeah man you know just hanging out with uh you know doing the old inside Carolina thing meeting some some important people player parents coming by and shouting out Buck Sanders is over there getting ready for his tailgate our TA get going player uh player parents coming by and and and just just pancaking you in the middle of the Bow's lot he probably could have that would that would have gone really poorly it's funny story I was I was I was told somebody was going to come see us and I was like did I say anything bad I don't think I have said anything bad it is but listen one thing I've learned Joey is a lot of people pay attention to this show dude we've are we've been mobbed by folks just got like people from New York come out here and say bringing you gifts the hell is that all about I mean you got to be nice to people I guess so when you're nice to people it comes back to you in Spades and that's the cool thing about doing the show out here in the busot and it's not really packed out here today I understand it's Charlotte like you said it's a great weather day but people care people care a lot yeah and not only do they care they're nice enough to come and express their gratitude for what we do and that's a testament to Buck and Ben and all them for letting us do it to let us do it and CHL you know AJ's over there not paying us any mind AJ's Fine he's got his beer he's got his dip he's set I will say look look in all in all seriousness AJ was here when I pulled up the broadcast table was set up everything on his side was set up I mean my man had done literally all he could do besides flip switch on and put the hamster in the wheel and I'm just I I I know we give him a lot of crap on the air but this show doesn't happen with uh with Alvin Jehosaphat avoiding us like without him without him none of this is none of this is a and look look let's be honest it took a while to get the hamster in the wheel this morning the hamster didn't want to get in the wheel I mean and we had to smack him on the butt get him in there get him in but it appears to be working right it does and shout out to everybody that's already up in the chat uh Tommy giving you a big look at him right now we're working on some new camera techniques so we might try to work that in during the break but uh also joining us today Tommy instead of just you and I uh young lettuce what's up Evan it's still around you see still a little trim he Tri a little trim he trimmed it he he getss a haircut like my children get right it's like they go in there they pay for it and they get a little snippy snippy this is you know how do you get your haircut I look Tommy you like your head got sunburned recently I'm it always does I'm going to give a shout out to Walmart right I have not paid for a haircut since 2001 when I you go to Walmart I bought a pair of Clippers oh all right well I mean you're doing you're doing the economical you use them in 2001 or Tommy does not have a ton of Tommy doesn't have a ton of drag not a ton of win resistance with this particular no you see the swimmers that's me I don't need a I don't need a cap Joey's always hating you know but Joey you always cover yours up so I'm like why what's the point I'm not I'm not mad at you do you L's uh is there a football game today I don't know is there seems like it here's my issue with this schedule that we've got going on here for North Carolina a lot of people take these games for granted yeah and I personally and Evan we've talked about this and Joey we've talked about off air this game is important for North Carolina they only get you only get seven home games a year okay you get seven home games but you also only get so many opportunities to win when you lose a quarterback last week and now you got an opportunity to work a guy in that's your future yeah man at the position y talking to people in the lot out here it's like what are we doing to get better what is M Brown doing to get this team better Conor Harold's the key how many people how many real talk I I'll let you answer I'll W let you answer give me give me a number how many people have said the last name Harold to you since last since last Thursday hundreds yeah I say a ton of people it's like it it's literally that's all yeah I was at uh baseball practice for my son's baseball team last night and two parents asked me at different intervals because you know they know I'm involved with the show so is Conor going to be able to do anything and I think that's a valid question it's obviously it's obviously all anybody wanted to ask mag this week but it's um it was really really apparent last week that that they did not have a plan or the plan that they had was incredibly rained in so I I I think what we're going to see is is kind of building off of that Tommy to your point with only a limited amount of times to get better you know you take the win from last week you bottle it you probably burn some of the tape but then you move forward Evan I'm going to ask you what's the first thing that you think they did after they put last week to bed as far as team goes I don't want you I want you to just talk about Conor cuz we got plenty of time to get into that but tell me what you think they did as a team when they got back had their day off and then got back into practice I think Sunday I think they took Friday and Saturday off and got back in on Sunday is that what I remember back saying I think that's I think that's accurate something like that yeah I mean like once you get over the cuz at the end day I mean you take a win how it comes no matter if it's 3 to2 or 45 to 50 um but like Tommy had mentioned like you've got to get in that mindset of this isn't a game you take for granted this isn't an opponent take for granted there's only so many games that you get you know they've only got three more tuneups until basically a new season starts because they got their last eight games of the year at conference and with how the postseason works out in the new format conference games are just a totally different new season I mean you see team down in Tallahassee their season's almost basically over in two weeks because you lose two games not only two games but two conference games speaking of train wrecks and you're you're behind the bar so this is a game I think you and early in the week that Monday that Tuesday you have your leaders in the room talking about you know you can't take this team for granted I looked back in the Mac Brown 2.0 era UNCC has played five group of five teams or a group of five team five times how many of those group of five games do you think were decided by one possession of the five oh there's been a lot of the five group of five by one possession group of five by one pos five since Mac 2.0 oh gosh you got app a couple times I'm going to say it's at least 10 no no there's five there's five group of five games they play group of five team five times okay of the five of the four yeah I would say almost all all app aren't they three are app one's Georgia State at Georgia State I remember that that game was endowed into the fourth quarter and don't get me wrong I understand app is a totally different Echelon when we're talking about group of five teams but the point being there are still talented players on that Char team I mean we've talked about it they got 44 transfers they got scholarships too man 4 that's the old the old adage that you know you always hear in pro ball those guys get paid too these guys are on scholarship I guess you could say they get paid too cuz nil has changed everything but those guys have scholarships as well and it's one of those deals where you think about just a week ago how much North Carolina was absolutely foaming at the mouth to have a chance to hit somebody new okay you got last week now you got this week and it's almost at a heightened it's almost a heightened opportunity because of what we've seen with having to work in a new offense yeah I mean when we talk about these games is interesting we had Larry Fedora conversation the other day or actually on the game plan Fedora would dominate these games dude he I heard you you and Staples talking about it and it took me back to a happy place when they hung about half a million on Old Dominion it was like 80 to 20 and things like that but but for whatever reason m brown in that style is not a blowout of lesser team style you know what I mean and so what do we expect today I mean I think we've short changed Charlotte to your point they've got players they've got a lot of guys missing and and I believe they have a lot missing today well Po's talked about how hurt they are and I'm I'm just here for the cut off sweatshirt you know he didn't wear it last week I know he actually dressed up a little bit but what is that all about but for me watching this North Carolina team we hear all about the standard and and Evan you've heard it and and you've seen it these guys are talking about we don't talk about opponents anymore we talk about our standard hold that thought evans's got a quote that we're going to listen to in the next segment I've got the quote for you you got the quote see yeah Tom well Tommy was appreciate appreciate you giving me a heads up you were I was getting ready to say I was getting ready to defend you and say in your defense you were playing mayor for a little while and didn't get didn't get that show meeting but one thing I do think that we we may have overlooked a little bit is when you have a quarterback controversy how much those two guys are always looking over their shoulder certainly like worried about you know is this the drive where they yank me but but was it a you talking about Carolina yes and I guess I I don't know how much controversy there was going on there either way there's none now is my point absolutely so so now you've got a situation where it's Conor harrold period end of sentence draw Mike so I guess what I'm what I'm trying to to pull out of y'all is do you think that's a nice little advantage that might actually help get him more comfortable more quickly because had he come in last week it would have been one of those things uh where you know if Max Johnson was healthy he's thinking if I screw up are they going to pull bring Max back in where now he knows all right I got the keys the car is mine there's nobody trying to to you know there's nobody trying to backseat drive for me here does that help free him up a little bit it helps a younger quarterback so yes it helps Conor like for Mac or for Max I don't think it would have been a problem if there was truly a controversy like I don't think Max is worried about oh if I play Bad this drive I might get yanked just because he's been in college football for so long it does help Conor because I think and like last week last week is just a weird sample of Conor I mean I'd rather you look at the bowl game and even that's a little bit weird just cuz of the Personnel that was available but like I mean clearly last week he comes in and the plan was just get the hell out of Minnesota with a win I mean like they all they wanted to do was win again they didn't care how like I mean and M said that yeah and that's fine like that is that makes total sense I mean clearly Conor was not in the game plan and now you've got a full week to be in the game plan you know you're the guy it's probably very similar to Bull prep and that like Connor understands like hey I'm the quarterback and like people forget before we got hurt in that bowl game he really did Flash some stuff I thought he looked good his first half actually was a bit of a menace and and in his two interceptions one's a great play by the defensive end where he just grabs it onehanded the other one he's intending for deams May over the middle it was just ow that's BR that might be touchdown that's that's another like that's another issue I had with that game plan why are we why are we throwing multiple targets to De man I me and no disrespect to anybody all certainly and that that is what throws up a little bit of red flag for me with chip Lindsay is because you know we're watching Conor Harold today I'm watching chip Lindsay and how they incorporate what he does well into this and that's why we talked about let him loose and see what he can do because I don't think they let him loose even in the bowl game yeah to see what he could do well cuz you got to know you've got to the thing is they've had a week now to literally like and it's not just in practice it's like sitting down in the film room in the quarterback room and saying what do you like because that's one of the things that all the good OC's do is they'll talk with their with their signal caller and they'll say hey what do you like so so they're not only picking what he does best but they're letting him speak into what's something he likes to go to so they're going to have some of that this week and I think you'll probably see some now the question and I think you and Staples did a great job of of digging into this the other day with Greg the question is now is how much of that do they go into right are you are you starting to feed him just a little bit because you know Evan you don't know about this I don't think but Tommy you know when you first start feeding your kids solid food right you can't just you can't just legally take them off of off of of milk and take them straight into a Tomahawk Steak you've got to you got to give them a little bit to see how much they can eat how much they're going to split up how much is going to end back on the you know on on their shirts and all that stuff I think the question this week is how much do they try to to feed what's going to be the full game plan to Connor Harold I think we talk about it the entire show here and and we talked about it on that game plan yeah I'm all for throwing everything out there you want to see all of it for I want to see and I'm not talking about doing double reverse pass flea flickers I'm talking about cut him loose can he throw the Deep out can he throw the Deep dig can he throw the Deep Over can he throw this and that and all because you don't want to be wondering what he can do in three weeks right and and everybody's talking about JMU is a different animal blah blah blah JMU is not the same team that jmu's been so I'm looking ahead all the way to Duke you want to see what Connor Harrell can do with live action with guys with different color jerseys trying get him and and for me that is what I'm watching the most and that's why I mentioned the chip Lindsay thing because I'm not 100% sure they're going to do that well so let me ask you this too remember um and I know it was a different OC but remember two years ago when UNC brought Drake out the first time against FAMU and we were all like you regardless of how good Drake Drake May or might need we didn't know how good he was at that point regardless of how good he may or may not be North Carolina struggled for the first part of that game it took a while before they actually found their feet found the Rhythm and found some things in the Playbook they could stick with one of which was Drake breaking off a 70 yard run right so I think there could be some of that today and it has nothing to do with North Carolina's level of talent it has nothing to do with how good they may be it has nothing to do with how Good Charlotte may or may not be I think it's all going to be getting used to running a set of plays getting some Cadence getting some Tempo with the guy behind Center that you've got right now and I think that's I think that's going to be a little bit of a little bit of a I don't know game within a game if you want to watch something early on um Tommy I I want to ask you this we're you know we're going to get into Evans um Evans segment here in a second about about here in uh that's dangerous we're gonna get into Evan segment here a little bit and talk about uh coach speaking what we think we heard Tommy I want to ask you if there is if there's one thing that you're looking for in the first half to make you feel better or worse what is it success throwing the football so it's it's it's it's literally just pushing the ball forward y I want to see some throws 10 15 yards down the field yeah you know yeah I totally agree I mean because you got to be able to do that in this era of college football and you've got AJ needs to protect the stuff we got IC swag blowing all over the parking lot um but I want to see them push the ball vertically down the field you and I well I don't know about you but I could stand back there and throw swing passes all day yeah no it's it's well you want you want them to use the full you want them to use the full tree the full route tree of the Malon offense right and that's where they've got to be able to click on all nine of those options at some point to somebody doesn't have to be the same guy right and it's not just Conor Harold right it is these receivers the the the receivers look like they were wearing Minnesota jerseys yeah for most part of that game it it and and and the play calling I think even when Johnson was in you know like that that third and long where you throwing out like I would have I don't know that that's that's a call I would have made but I'm I'm not go too far into the Monday morning quarterbacking here but yes that at some point let's call some plays that allow receivers to have a little more than a small window to catch and let's let's call some plays that allow that quarterback a little more opportunity for success as opposed to a 10 yard out on a a pressure field third down all right guys let's take a break uh we're going to get to uh listen to some coach speak when we get back it's going to be Evans going to be time Evan to to drive us around by the way if you haven't seen the interview that Tommy and I did with Eric Church a couple weeks ago I'm judging you a little bit cuz that was uh Eric was really really good I mean it's I don't know why I thought he would be any different but uh you will never find as big of of a Tar Hill fan but but Chief's actually really knowledgeable I mean like he he flexed a little bit talking about uh talking about what he expected for this year's team and talked about his old memories of of being a fan and kind of what got him hooked so if you have not go check out the inside Carolina YouTube channel and see that interview that we did in a 40 Club episode with uh Tommy and I and Eric Church Evan yes you want to do some coach speaking let's do some coach speaking have had it bro everyone's been talking about the standard the standard standard the standard what standard shipping what is the standard what what does that mean you know like so you know Tommy's brought it up obviously in the game plan and brought up in the first segment I wanted to give the audience the actual quote so they can kind of hear the context of what Ma's meant by it how it was brought up yeah so Mack was question a valid question bristley didn't he he did I I thought it was a valid question someone asked is it nice to have this you know lack of better word runway for Conor Harold these three games to kind of get his feet wet and here's what Mac had to say about that we are not looking at opponents anymore you you look at uh abalan Christian Texas Tech you look at South Carolina and Old Dominion but just clarify just just I know but just clarify we're playing to a standard that North Carolina needs to play to cuz we've lost some G we've won some games we shouldn't have won around here and we've lost some games we should have won around here so we're playing to a standard to be the best we can be and we're not talking about who we play for the rest of the year we are playing to a standard and we have told those kids they better get after we better have the best practice we've ever had tomorrow cuz that's really important CU everybody going to brag on them this week and we haven't done that well so we're we're through we are playing to a standard period and we don't care who's on the other side period Point Blank don't care don't care who's on the other side I mean I I kind of like The Moxy but what was your did you feel like he was uh I don't know did you feel like he was really really bristle or do you feel like that's do you feel like that's what he's probably saying within the the halls of the K football center right that was what I was thinking it it gave me Vibes to the poison cheese last year before the the UVA game poison cheese where he said don't eat the poison cheese that's a deep cut I like it you know the game didn't go as the poison cheese won that game um I do think it is a conversation that Mack is having behind the scenes with the guys yeah I do it rolled off his tongue that way it did and when we talked to Cayman later in the week he also brought up the the whole idea of playing to a standard I got my Mom and Dad here in the parking lot how y'all doing I'll give you hug um but the man can folks the man can do radio while hugging his mother that's next level the real question is is that a conversation that is resonating with players because at the end of the day I'm a college kid I understand being a college kid you play at UNCC yeah and you see Charlotte on the other side you're like ah this is going to be a cakewalk now that's where your your leaders like your Ruckers your Eckles have to step up but I think it is a it is a healthy mindset that that Mack is laying out there I think it is important that he is saying that quote unquote to the world because I'm sure there are players that do hear that and it was really interesting when we're talking about the standard of UNCC Biff pogy during his his press conference this week had some very fun comments and he had to say this about UNCC exciting though I mean it's the best time make somebody angry saying this I'm sure it'll make a bunch of people angry but I mean kind of when you think about North Carolina College football you know Carolina probably is you know they're the top dog and they've earned it and um and so it'll be a a very exciting day for us to go over there and play who who could get angry at that I can't think of who who who could beff upset I was impressed with the uh the deploy iy that was shown in that uh that was shown in that he's he's absolutely working the room and trying to get a pop uh from from whoever's around him I can appreciate that going back to what you said a second ago about if the players are biing in the standard thing Evan I think um if you get other players saying it on their own that to me is the tail if you prompt them and they say it it's like oh they they know you're kind of leading them to where they should go but if if they're straight up using the same terms the coaches are using kind of habitually or as a kneejerk reaction something then I think you're probably you're probably on to something a little bit more and and it's a little more clear that okay yes this is something that's going on PO pogy I think to Tommy's point I think he's absolutely just he's he's absolutely throwing red meat out to the the folks he's he's sitting around yeah I mean and and pogy is a a he's different individual I mean I can't figure out if I really really love it or I think he's weird but but for me but put to listen to what he has to say but not only listen to Carolina talk about it and let's get back to the the standard deal is that I think every school does this they have talking points everywh right right and you will hear a coach say it whether it's Kirby Smart whether it's uh you know Deo yeah anybody they have certain talking points they want but I do find it interesting to hear players parit it for lack of a better or how they how they par it like what what's coming through from them and and so for me when I hear them talking about the standard and I asked Jason this and we talked about like what is the standard right like Define Standard air quotes yeah one game into the season what's your standard like am I going to look good today look good play good am I going to have a perfect PFF score I mean at this point in the season what is the standard what yeah what do you mean or what is your expectation when you use that term yeah so is the standard set week to week is it something that we have set before before the season starts is it some you know does it adjust and that's where I'm kind of lost and it all comes back to what we talked about earlier with the Minnesota game is just win the football game yeah right I don't care is that the standard is just getting a win of standard is that yeah and so is that an argument where say oh well we beat Charlotte 45 to10 right but we didn't play well that's disrespectful to Charlotte when you beat the hell out of them and you say we didn't play well so what is your standard every week yeah yeah for a change for North Carolina football fans I have no idea what their standard is because Carolina can win multiple games that's absolutely moving Target time there you go so for North Carolina I'm interested to see what exactly their standard is over these next three weeks before you get into ACC play and how that changes week to week based on what you have available what's crazy is and I think that this is kind of this might have been where you were going Evan I'm not sure but when you have a coach talking about a standard Tommy you talked about the ambiguity of of what that means within the within the locker room um is that is that something they've got data attached to right is that something that there's that there's data tied to so that it's you know do we limit our number of drops to three you know do we do we have X amount of QB pressures do we have um do we have X amount of hurries we have X amount of pancake blocks and if so do they adjust that based on the opponent or because that's the thing if if it's a standard by definition it's got to be the same for everything yeah exactly is it zero drops and that's the question that's that's where I'm curious to hear how how that's being preached to the team I don't know if this is how they're doing but like in my mind I think when you're evaluating the standard is just so based off the eye test because numbers can just be so that's fair deceiving I mean if we're talking about numbers like for example um Jordan waters's last week freny State running back ran for over 100 yards like if you look on paper you had a great day running any of those yards came on the last Drive of the game where he ripped off a meaningless touchdown like outside of that it was like 16 carries for around 30 40 yards like that's not a good day like if you're looking ice like eye test that's not a good day at all I mean I I said this after I texted uh Staples this after the game last week that you know hearing that uncc's o line graded out so well to me watching the game I'm like they're not exactly opening great holes like Hampton was Hampton was usually getting hit pretty early and shaking it off and and and again that's that that's just the ey test but but the numbers say differently so what is it right is is it eye test stuff or is it is it something and I'm just curious how that how that's being parlayed to the players because clearly it's something that's a that's a focus like you said Evan but I'm just curi what's the what's the manifestation of that on the field that th this right here is the dynamic of playing instate schools right we're in the bot here live you've got a guy wearing a UNCC Charlotte oh excuse me a Charlotte 49ers hat with a Carolina shirt on yeah my man's a little confused yeah I uh but but talking about that the offensive line graded out the best on the team for the most part against Minnesota I felt like watching from the stands and I've watched bits and pieces of the game back on TV I didn't feel like that should have been the case you know I think given to Marian Hampton's and he graded out High relatively High I think he should have been by far the highest simply because all the runs you know 100 yards after contact and all this but the offensive line I felt like they gave up too many hits on the quarterback they gave up too much on the edge you know Minnesota was getting home they were and so you've got those issues for me the standard for me is win period okay however you get there win go one and0 every week and that's what and we're going to explore it as the year goes on with Ma and the coordinators EV in the press conferences is like yeah it's a moving Target but what is it mhm what is it week to week Evan what I didn't hear Max saying was was one was elaboration on that but also I did not hear him saying a lot about uh a lot about how they're using that in their game breath like I can hear that me the standard Port the standard part makes sense to me from A Summer Prep MH it's hard for me to figure out like what is how is that how is that working into a game plan yeah I don't I don't know how it would it would necessarily mold in there I think also the standard just comes back to you're playing an instate opponent and Mack has really harped on this idea of of winning the state in terms of games in terms of he's always done that even even his first time that and I think one of the reasons why you know these last two years in terms of just the offseason you've seen some upset people in terms of fan bases or just people in general involved with UNC is they haven't won that important game in state at the end of the year and there's so much that's dependent about these instate games and you can't get to that instate game at the end of the year if you don't take care of your business with the inate team at the beginning of Tommy's taking care of business right now with a big plate of sausage don't mind don't mind us actually trying to do a hosts of inside Carolina Live Joey Powell and Tommy Ashley must be kind of way out of [Music] here in South Carolina Live coming at you to our heels the 49ers Tommy I'm not sure how how North Carolina's been game plan for for Jerry Rice and Joe Matana today I mean it just there's you got Marcus Allen in the back field it's going to be it's going to be a tough one um that would be epic that would be epic to see that team show up yeah well let's let's uh let's see if we could talk with with our guy doc Staples about uh how North Carolina might actually game plan for the Charlotte 49ers today you know Jason you love him you see him on the day after with Tommy and buck uh but he also does the game plan on Thursday nights on inside Carolina the the man is just great if nothing else and he allows me to nerd out with him once a week and I appreciate that Staples first things first I you and I were texting earlier this week about it and uh North Carolina has Connor harrold and a guy that as you say had experience with a game plan designed for him in the postseason exhibition against West Virginia we saw him do some things effectively uh I think the the main Intrigue that everybody's asking about and I know you touched on a little bit during the the the game plan what's it going to look like with him running uh running the show and you and I were texting and you know it seems like there will probably be some more uh wrinkles into an option uh but what do you think the the main tenants of using his full skill set will be from Chip lindsy the offensive staff well first of all I don't think you try to use too much of his full skill set in this game I think you try to Pro protect him and try to really get him to to get comfortable as a thrower uh I think we saw La at the end of last year when you have a quarter back with a real run threat and you decide to run him against a a out outmatched team how that can really negatively impact the team's season so uh if you don't know what I'm talking about I'm talking about the uh injury to Jordan Travis that uh that that basically submarined Florida State's ability to get to the uh to the playoff at least that's the story of the uh of the playoff committee you don't want that to happen to Connor Harold right so what you want to do is you want to you want to really limit how much you have to use his full skill set in this one and get him to work on the part of his skill set that you're really going to need to be uh at you know running Full Throttle to beat the better teams on your schedule so this one's one where you know it's a give it's it's going to be give most of the time in the running game you might run them a couple times you know he may take off running and as a Scrambler you really want to handicap him too much on that and him you know don't run but you do want him to be real careful and you don't want to call a bunch of things that are going to put him in danger and you want to you want to find the things in the passing game that that have him feeling comfortable what is it that that in terms of the the confines of your passing game what are the concepts that he's that he's most comfortable with and he can execute the best and what is it that you know kind of builds off of that that you can continue to iterate on to improve his overall the overall packages that you can run with him Jason some of the comments after our show on Thursday night um one person asked why why why is the game still fast for him why why hasn't it slowed down he's been on campus what three years almost right now what's the deal and I said well he hadn't played and explain to people the difference of practice versus real games even if it's a lesser competition it's still different than practice without without using alen quotes we talking about practice versus a game what's the difference we talking about practice man practice so what we talking about practice I mean how silly is that play anyway um so yeah I mean number one is when he was on campus that first year he basically got zero reps and from what I was told Phil Longo really never paid any attention to him in that last in that in that in that first fall that he was here that last fall that that Phil Longo was here so when he started out you know he got a he got a good spring of work to begin with and then basically got nothing and regressed a decent amount in that first fall and then came back for for last spring which was his first spring and a new offense and then didn't really play that much in the fall again but he did at least rep in practice but the thing you got to remember is number one he's in a he's in an offense he's only been in for a year and a half now every time you learn a new offense it's like learning a new language and it takes a little bit of time for that to take right when you have a new offensive coordinator you're you're working through all of that that takes some time to begin with the second thing is the the game speed versus practice speed thing which you're talking about Tommy and that is it's one thing you know these quarterbacks don't get hit in practice anymore it's one thing to go through seven on seven and sit back there and like you you know okay you're working on okay progressions here here here you know concept is here middle of the field open all right that means I start here I check I check right there that's going to determine whether I go here or here and then if neither of those is there because somebody jumps something then that's going to mean check down to here all of that stuff's there and you rep that tons of times in seven on seven and you rep through your inside rund drill and you're going through all that but it's a completely different thing doing that in practice which first of all that there there's a lot that you have to do as a as a a player uh learning a new offense and and all of those things to begin with and then the other thing is that you know High School versus college is enor an enormous difference a good athlete like him who was surrounded by really good athletes uh at the high school he played with in in in Alabama you know almost backyard football to some degree uh when you've got that much more Talent than the teams that you're playing in college everything is different and then so you're working on all that in practice and then you get out there in games and now you're doing that and you're live you're getting hit you are doing it with you know large B flying around you you have to make sure that you are not only not only are you seeing what's happening downfield but you have to be feeling what's going on in the pocket you're it's just a completely different animal and until you've had a few times where you've had opportunities to get used to that speed and to the contact and you know the live rounds flying around you it takes a little bit and then the other thing is some guys are just more intuitive than other guys I was talking about I was talking about this actually not long ago with EJ Manuel who you know was a guy you know I've known him for some years we were talking about about how when he got to the NFL he didn't really understand everything and he look he he was well coached he played in a in a very Advanced offense and then when he got to the NFL he realized how little he knew and the the difference between whiteboard and intuition is a whole different ball game look I can go up there and diagram and explain the read progression and all of those things and I could probably even go through it in seven on seven you know as they would ask Connor Harold to do it but if you ask me to go out there and do it with live rounds flying with the possibility of getting hit and you know enormous you know six seven 68 tackles I've got to see around and over while I'm feeling pressure and trying to make sure that I'm reading a defense and all that I can guarantee you I'd go out there and throw like seven picks tomorrow right and that's understanding every like I could probably whiteboard it with the best of them but the intuition that has to be developed over time and some guys develop that intuition a lot faster and a lot more naturally so you think about like the great the great players often don't make great coaches right I I I watched the thing not long ago that was Eddie Van Halen's son talking about how Eddie was not a very good guitar teacher out for his kid right because he'd just be like oh well you just do it like this and then like demonstrate it and like okay that's what you do and then like hand the guitar back and the kid's like I don't think you understand I might have a Van Halen last name but I'm not Eddie Van Halen like I'm going to need a little more than that and the thing is a guy like that who's a virtuoso guitarist is a guy who the intuition is just off the charts but Eddie actually in a lot of things was you know you know he was not trained by you know a great teacher on guitar the same thing works for these guys at the college level where a guy like Connor Harold probably right now could give you everything you ask on the Whiteboard but the question is how quickly that gets into the intuition some guys it's faster some guys it's a little bit slower my impression is that a lot of times the guys who are the the smartest and the strongest in the classroom are often the last to get it intuitively and I say that as one of the people who was pretty good in the classroom and on the Whiteboard and I always felt like I actually had to wrestle against overthinking to get it into my into my intuition to be where I needed to be as an athlete and that was that was something I had to overcome and I I suspect that that's probably true for someone who's as smart as as as Herold is so obviously North Carolina needs to clean up the the drops that they saw from the receivers last week and some of that was probably Yip some of that was was game planning some of that was where the ball was placed but who do you think are are the likely candidates for chip Lizzy to help be Conor herold's security blanket as they work in some of these new things um let's not even talk about the offensive line because again they they may be looking at at moving the pocket a lot more who knows but who who are some guys that chip Lindsay's likely to use to help make this transition a little more seamless for for Conor Harold that's an interesting question because I mean my my immediate response to that is to go to the tight end room because I mean those are some of your most reliable guys and and you know nesbit's also a real downfield threat in that respect and of course JJ Jones is a veteran and all that but the interesting the thing that makes this really interesting is that if a guy's been repping with the younger receivers a bunch so far this season because he's been playing with the second unit sometimes there's actually more Synergy a little bit more comfort with the guys that you've been rolling with more often in practice so that's something they're going to have to figure out I can't answer that without having really had the conversation with Connor of like who do who do you feel comfortable with where where are you on this but I can tell you right now if I were chip Lindsay I'd be having that conversation with him who do you trust the most where what what who are you comfortable with out here with you because I'm going to have to start working with that and of course if he's not as comfortable with some of the older guys you have to work that through because they're going to be out there but you know maybe you do see a bipss or somebody like that who spent more time with him in the in the second unit in practice and you say yeah that guy needs a needs a few more reps because they've just got something going Jason you made some great points there that's a wonderful point that we didn't really talk about on Thursday and I think that can't be overstated the comfortableness um with having receivers but also I wanted to back up to your point about live rounds it's it's like I'll do the baseball analogy since you've done so many other ones it's like saying I could hit that 100 mph fast ball you know I could hit it out of a pitching machine where I know it's going straight down the middle I'd time it up eventually can you hit it when a guy might hit you in the head with it and it's the same thing with with Connor's situation is to your point but I want to talk about that offensive line a little bit because I think that's relevant um here too because Connor's not the tallest guy in the world and we've talked about Samson Tron green and all these guys are monsters how does that work for a shorter quarterback we've seen guys like Kyler Murray make it work of you know we can go all the way back Doug fluty would make it work and all but how does how does Chip Lindsay sort of scheme around that issue if that is an issue for Conor Herold well I do think it's an issue and some guys have a harder time with it than others I mean some guys have just they they for whatever reason it's like they can see around corners and you know they they they just see it and in it it a little faster I do expect that for him it'll be a little bit of a challenge especially early on the the most important thing is to make sure that the shorter quarterback does a great job in pre-nap so you have to be extra prepared to say okay they're here but 30% of the time they've rotated out of this to this so I need to know that and what I need to do is I need to know where I need to get my eyes on this concept to make sure that I know exactly what they're in post Snap based on what the possibilities are on what I'm seeing pre- snap and then sometimes with the smaller guys you have to actually move you have to use your feet in the pocket a little bit to to see through windows so one thing that's a misconception is even taller quarterbacks don't generally throw over top of linemen you throw through windows so you know you're not wanting to throw over trevan green at 6 foot eight right that that's not normally the way that works especially since he's likely to be locked up with a defensive linan who's then going to be trying to stick his arms up you have to find your space and you know work your way to to space in the pocket to throw through the gap between trevan green and you know the guard right that's probably going to be lamin in that case and you him you could probably throw over if it weren't for the you know six5 defensive tackle that's often lined up on him right but you have to find those windows the difficulty is actually not the throwing over it's more the seeing over and seeing through and the smaller quarterbacks they have to actually use their feet a little bit more to find those little Gap in the pocket so that they can see where they need to see in order to make the good decision so I know that if I need to check that here's the rotation I need to check that backside safety maybe my drop is not straight back maybe my drop is you know 30 Dees to the right in this case because I know based on this protection that's probably going to be where my Gap is so that I can see that guy so you have to use your you have to use yourself use your movement a little bit more to help your eyes and tie your feet to your eyes really well talking with Jason Staples here on inside Carolina Live one more question for you Doc before we let you go um are you concerned at all about and I'm flip to the other side of the ball about North Carolina's Miss tackles last week is that just a a Jitter thing is it is it guys trying to hit and not wrap up is that is that something you feel like is is worth concern or should we wait until we see it again before we freak out welcome to college football in the 2020s nobody tackles everybody hits right you know well even in practice like you know you're thuing if anything and the whole emphasis is like stay off the ground stay off the ground I mean you've been to these open practices how many times have you heard how many times have you heard m brown turn on his microphone just to say stay up stay up keep him up yeah take care of your teammates and you know there's a reason for that because you know if you're not healthy you're not going to beat anybody right but then you know nobody tackles to the ground through the first part of the season so early parts of Seasons you see a ton of M tackles by everybody uh the the concern that I had on that was not so much the the the total you know game of Miss tackles it was much more that it was the last two drives where I saw more Miss tackles when the when sort of the pressure of the game kind of got bigger that was a little more concerning for me that that the moment got a little big for the defense at times and they've got to they've got to make sure that they that they take care of business a little bit more down the stretch uh on that but over the course of the game I don't think it was any more concerning than it is for anybody else in in college football these days well that's fair um Tommy I always appreciate Jason coming in and letting us letting us X and O it up um maybe we should just like bring a big white board and let him come in and we could just do that video record it and and stream it to to the IC masses but doc we appreciate you we will talk to you next week uh as the tar Hills will have another game against a a moment that they should be treating to to try to get better with we'll talk to you soon talk to you soon just make sure if I'm doing that whiteboard you don't let Tommy you know come come in and hit me out of nowhere while I'm doing it or I have to dodge him while I'm while I'm actually what we're going to do we're gonna go full Terry Tate whiteboard dra up and there's a whiteboard in the inside Carolina office so Joey maybe we can get this done that's the second week in a row we've had a ter Tate reference on this show so I I don't know what's happening but we got to find a way to make it three next week we'll take a quick break be right back for the second hour of inside Carolina live here on 979 the hill wchl yo the hosts of inside Carolina Live Joey Powell Andis Cersei Carolina Live hour two coming at you we're going to do this for another hour we'll hand it over to our friends at the Tar Hill radio network at 2:30 little Young Jeezy bringing you back no D noris Cersei today he is on assignment we've had him on the roster long enough that we can send him on assignment for a day uh but instead to keep Evan Rogers in line I have brought IL padrino Buck Sanders onto the show because folks if you want to if you want to talk to somebody who's seen a lot of Carolina football Buck Sanders is probably that guy Buck you've probably you've probably seen more and forgotten more than you'd like to you'd like to bring up right hopefully you forgotten the bad stuff no I think that probably sticks out most in my mind cuz there's plenty of bad to work with I was just going over some of the things we were going to talk about and I was thinking of uh North Carolina playing Ferman back in the day Carl brush era and I think I was probably one of like 30 UNCC fans left friends and family only yeah at the end of the fourth quarter and uh so y'all went real deep on the IC live Beach uh bench you know let like North Carolina you're going to play a lot of your depth this year I'm at one end of the bench but I'm happy to help out if I can well we appreciate it we're not not going to ask you to do the same uh the same pregame workout that we get Dorris to do but uh we we think that your kind of your concept and and perspective on History will be helpful here and and no I didn't call you old that was Evan um I I think the what what is what is the first thing that jumps out at you in these types of games and when I talk about these types of games I mean specifically a game where it's all about what North Carolina does and not about what the opponent can or cannot do this game as Max said is is a standard game but this game is going to be more about North Carolina being able to try new things with Conor Harold uh find an identity offensively with a new quarterback but it's going to be more about how they execute as a team independent of of who the opponent is what is your recollection of how North Carolina typically does in those games you know I think it's a mixed bag um I can think back to a fairly recent quarterback uh TJ Yates I think he threw 300 in his first game to various Jehosaphat Yates yes I I think he uh he hit three bills his first game out here in Kenan was that yeah I think it was M it may have been but uh so you know it's been a mixed bag and uh we're thinking looking on the previous games where North Carolina lost a quarterback I think I'm jumping ahead on the it's okay um but I remember when um Oscar Davenport went down yeah uh first home opener you know and uh brought in Ronald Curry the quarterback and everybody was really excited about him to start with people probably wanted Curry more than they wanted they probably did yeah U so you know it's I think it's been a little bit of a mixed bag um I think a lot of it goes well helps out a lot and what helped out in some cases um is when they came in against a lesser opponent like this early they they were usually in a good place yeah all the way around the offense was wanting to find out what they could do the defense was usually pretty good Larry Fedora never lost those games um he was playing a lesser opponent he would always win um well very seldom I cannot remember a real upset against you know FCS or a subar in tality yeah what's up Roy Williams used to always say we we were more gifted than the other team that's that was his that was his go-to and you know I know that Charlotte has not yet conceded this game uh but they're not the the kind of opponent that typically gets gives North Carolina a lot of problems it happens Appalachian State though in and for example is not the same caliber of team as Charlotte appalachin had a lot of success like in the way that James Madison is not Charlotte James Madison has had a lot of a success right so I think it depends on the type of program in and the attitude they come into the game with most teams that give North Carolina a lot of trouble when they come out of the visitor's locker room you can tell they're ready to play yeah EV I want to ask I want to ask you kind of in following up as a supplement to what Buck was saying has there been kind of an an amplification around uh the football Center this week and The Practice Facility about making sure that they're that they're not sleeping right because I I think that the natural inclination and and buck touched on a little bit the natural inclination when you're playing a lesser than talented team right is is to kind of I guess relax not care as much or whatever and independent of of somebody who just wants to Feast Like Larry fedor's teams used to is there a situation where you felt like maybe the coaching staff had to had to kind of lock in on some guys so we can say hey don't let up you know we we just had this big opener on the road against Minnesota a power four opponent and we won right we cannot let that lapse this week or even even even lessen a little bit right there's two things that I think prevents that it's the fact that they're ushering in Conor Harold right it's a new quarterback and I think that's something that a team can get behind and understand like we have new quarterback like we still need to you know play up the par and I think the other thing that helps that is the transfer portal in the past if you're at UNC you know maybe you know a guy that you played with in high school that plays at Charlotte and you're like oh yeah I remember him he wasn't as good as me wasn't highly recruited you know we should beat up on Charlotte or whatever you know lesser opponent with the transfer portal you can look at Charlotte and you see three guys on roster who were some of these guys played with at UF in this uniform like you see jarus Colin you see Justin Olsson you see Dante Bal for and it's it's May and and it's tough to like good pull book and it's It's just tough to like Overlook an opponent when you're like oh you're telling you're telling me a guy who was a starting safety at UNC two years ago is now at Charlotte oh you're telling me a guy who was a high for Star recruit it was preseason all conference and plays at Charlotte now like one of the top 10 polls in the state right like I mean it's it's easier to overlook a team when you don't necessarily know anyone but when you see guys on that team and you're like oh you know power five power five power five power four I guess now it's hard to overlook a team I feel like when you just see you know how much talent is on that roster like yes I understand there's a reason why they had to transfer to a quote unquote Leicester division but at the end of the day you don't lose Talent yeah and there's still Talent on that roster Buck I think Evan makes a great point when he starts talking about the transfer portal and how you're bringing in you know you're losing guys to different programs that end up on your schedule but you're also bringing in guys I think about a guy like Austin blasy right two Champion two national championships at Georgia if there's ever been somebody that understands playing to a standard and just mashing out your opponent it's a guy like that do you think that could do you think there's a way to understate what that brings to a locker room in a game like this well I think pretty much anything is capable being understated but touche sir um in this particular case I think you're right on point uh a lot of times when you have a blasy come in or another type player uh come in when they walk in the in the out on the field basically on the practice field they they're just doing things differently yeah with a different level of intensity a different level of uh want to even the way they carry themselves even the way they carry themselves and at some point they're going to look around at other people and say hey this is how you do it you know if you're wanting to know how we get this done you can start emulating what I'm doing and do what I do and I think that's contagious I think uh probably I'm sorry that Doris is not here but I think probably on defense when you see somebody make a play MH I mean a real play just a thump yeah yeah and they they've got a sack or tfl on third down whatever um when you see something like that happen everybody on the defense gets a little of that juice it it pumps them up and makes them play harder it's very contagious I think maybe a little bit more so on defense and offense but I think it can be there as well on the offensive line so yeah having somebody from a program like that is certainly beneficial but you can't discount that some of the energy that the you know kids that maybe not from that quite that level of program TZ Walker last year yeah um they can also so uh prove the point that what what counts as talent and want to and trying to get it done on the field so all those things come into play the thing I wared about with Charlotte and uh you know maybe this is a misplaced worry about them is that have they signed too many have they got too many new players on their team right what's what's the continuity and and and for that team you know for the guys that are coming back they look around this is the team they were on last year and they got 71 players they've never laid eyes on on the team with them I don't recognize my home right uh and and just being on the same page and having that continuity and knowing when somebody zigs you zag whatever those kinds of things are you know I think very important to um success on team where there's 11 members on it I I think I think you get to a great Point too when you're thinking about you know your opponent's uh lack of continuity or you know a team that may be trying to find their identity as well I think that's a I think that's a valid question and it's something worth exploring I would ask you this too Buck you know we we've talked about it used to be just when you were playing against FCS opponents that there was a difference in Talent OR specifically size on the lines that you could always see it was always palpable it was always obvious that there's not the same thing when an FCS opponent lines up their line against your line is when when you look at and I know you're a big fan of the S&P when you look at at Charlotte's S&P numbers do you feel like there might be a difference here just in in in lining up theirs against year you know what I mean I I do but you know I I would caution everybody and I could probably be the one taking this advice myself more so than anybody else but I think I can get a little carried away with Advanced metrics early in the season because they've played one game you know uh I forget who it was maybe it was Georgia Tech or some other team shot up 28 spots in the FMP well you know the old adage of when when do you make your best Improvement well from game one to game two well that's would be true for both of these te to uh but the the thing is in an advanced metrics like that shoot up 28 spots could they have been 28 spots wrong right also true if they're that smart right if they're so dead on with their metrics can they be that far off when they're you know lining them up originally yeah you want to play a game of is charlot higher or lower than 120 in the RPI of ESPN if you had a guess I'm going to say they're probably lower I mean they they probably started lower and then you lose last week to James Madison and look bad doing it Charlotte is 122 Evan so last week I think some folks probably had a chance to see the Charlotte JMU uh game and again I would not recommend it um unfortunally watch that to yeah it's it I watched it I watched it from and live to tell the tale yes wow that is I may have gone back and watched it in parts that is impressive sir parts of it a second time but uh so so Evan I want to ask you is is there is was that just an an example of Charlotte trying to find their legs or do you think think this really could be a a a pretty pretty poor team I don't think they're a good team I do think they are going through some injury struggles like which which Biff pogy has has been very up about yeah like today it appears they're going to be about three offensive guards I mean three offensive guards I mean that is not a position injured injured yeah I mean that is not a position that's trouble I mean imagine if UNCC was down their top three offensive guards we would be uh is one of those Mitchell Mays no idea good question because uh he uh he started against UNC in Charlotte yes when they killed us and didn't allow us side yes did not allow a single one that's uh there we go um I it's fair question and you know you think about a team like Charlotte who is again to to use the Old Roy ISM uh less gifted than North Carolina uh when they're coming into it and not only they less gifted they're less gifted and limping in that's that's a the bigger thing I I really think in terms of why UNC it's important UNC obviously a wins thing but but does it does so in dominant fashion it's you're playing a lesser opponent yes but you're also playing a lesser opponent who's who's having some injury struggles on the defensive line the offensive line they could potentially have a couple defensive backs out it sounds like um I mean it's just it's just spots all over the field I know when you have eight or nine injuries it can't be a good injury but um I don't know I I really just think the team could be in for a really long year if they don't get healthy quick that is uh when you start talking about guys being out you know and especially on the offensive line which is that you know that's usually one of the places where lesser than teams struggle uh AJ may have just brought the most uh deep analysis of of any part of this show yet so far and I'm this is a quote here bug he wrote ritzy gonna eat um and again analytically speaking I think he might be on to something especially after seeing you know an interior lineman go for three sacks against Minnesota who is a much larger and much more veteran defense and talented and talented than what we're going to see today against against Charlotte Buck do you think this is one of those places where where Jeff Collins and his crew are probably uh probably a little antsy to get out there and get cooking against especially if they're down a couple of interior linemen I think they they would be you know uh licking their lips ready for the game to start but they thing is I'm I'm not sure ritzy is going to be the guy that causes the most damage today number one they're going to want to know where he is at all times right at this point he's on tape now unfortunately yes he's on tape and the second thing I think they you know the the tendency for Lions when they in that situation is they're they're so focused on one guy somebody else is the one that's going to walk away with the stat sheet numers yeah imagine your Charlotte right now and you've got rich had who are you game playing for and like okay we're going to focus on ritzy oh they've got this guy named Cayman Rucker on the edge forget about him he's no good he he was he was the one that's actually getting all the praise preseason so we'll we'll ignore him and then they're like all right well we'll switch to Dez Evans or Bo ainson or or a mountain siiz human like Travis Shaw Tris Shaw Kevin Hester Joshua You Know Travis Shaw I was really impressed with him absolutely he he looked uh well I think he is like 30 lb thinner than he was he looked more well proportioned yeah does that make sense like used used to be a lot of his weight he carried in his lower half I think to your point buck I think he looked a lot more constructed I guess if I can say if that's a word we can use so you know it could be somebody like Travis Shaw on the interior that you know takes uh rit's place on the stat sheet but you know I think that's where they can make some money today is they do have a lot of different people they can send from a lot of different angles and to cause a lot of different problems for the charlot offense now and I'm going to be honest with you I thought the Charlotte offense when I watched them they had as many Playmakers as Minnesota does yes uh I don't think M Minnesota had players probably as good as the ones that we'll see uh today on the offensive side of the ball for Charlotte but at the same time can that offensive line do enough to give those Playmakers a chance to to uh make some point so is is I mean if you think about it historically skill positions are the are the places where these Tor sorts of programs can make up the difference exactly but I also when I see you know Charlotte's quarterback drop back and just drop the ball I wonder like you know you I've seen that before from a from a UNC quarterback I'm trying to keep it positive here sir who will remain namess we're going to protect the names for the innocent but yeah I've seen that move before it's like their hand moves forward but the ball doesn't that that's that kind of draw oh and I'm not going to use the I know you're a fan of going to the Lucy pulling the the ball out from in front of Charlie Brown adage so many times Buck all right let's let's do this we'll take a quick break we'll come Cersei South Carolina Live rolls on tar Hills 49ers today no not those 49ers Charlotte 49ers we will not be having to worry about George KD and Brock py Christian mcaffrey gutting UNC today that's a different game for a different day what we do have is our IC takeover segment which is where we let you yes you The Listener out there the viewer out there the folks in I Nation drop some questions in for us and we'll try to do our best to answer them Buck I I cannot I cannot promise you any level of quality of answer here but I can I can promise you that I will answer I just can't say the answer will have any sort of validity or uh or promise to it but let's uh let's get rolling Evan what questions do thou have for us sir yeah we're going to start in the YouTube chat from Joshua Mills he wants to ask Will Carolina's defense be able to hold Charlotte under 250 yards of total offense which is interesting because I I'm not mistaken last week Minnesota had less than 250 yards SP I think so Buck would you bet it I don't think I would to be honest with you um I think they'll have probably more than 250 okay I there they do have um the capability of hitting some big plays uh the quarterback had a couple of big uh runs last week I think and the tailback who I like a lot um Kenyan is his name transfer good pull uh he he ran had a 41 Yer um last week and they they have some players that can catch the ball they have a guy Shawn Brown he does pretty well good player um and they've got a a really good the punt returner that will test our special teams rutage is his name he can he can return the ball so I mean I think probably um it it will be possible to hold Charlotte under 10 points but um the yardage is more of a concern for you well they're going to have they would have more yards I would think I mean because uh they do have the ability to make explosive plays and to this point point we don't know if North Carolina can that's fair I think that's fair all right Evan give me another one we've got Brian Evans in the YouTube chat asking how many turnovers will the Campbell Club create today I'm going to to modify it a little bit and just in general how many turnovers do you think this UNC defense could create or how many should they create to help this offense yeah um you know Dorris is big on this like this is his favorite stat uh that we learned last week but also uh I think it's just the way he views ball is is is when he was coached it's it's hey you've got to get more turnovers win the turnover battle uh a number today I think if North Carolina gets three I I would I I think that would be good anything more than that I think is is gravy and that shows that would Bode really well for me as far as analyzing what this defense is able to do long term but I think you you got to be going in today looking for at least three I mean whether it's strips whether it's picks whether it's uh turnovers on Downs or what have you I think you you got to try to find a way to get at least three Buck what say you you know probably they can get three uh they did put the ball on the ground three times last week they only lost one fumble uh but um and Max Brown is you know he he's going to have probably an errant pass or two uh that and and that defensive secondary is good enough to make you pay if you are a little bit off Target so I think three is probably a good number but uh you know it could be less than that I'm just not sure about that well Flip Flip that a little bit what's what's the danger zone for North Carolina not in the game but what's something if you see North Carolina have X amount of turnovers today that you're going to actually probably get some heartburn over o if they have three turnovers I'd be really concerned okay uh and I think that uh you know if there's one thing that uh Conor Harold can show to uh demonstrate progress it would be that taking better care of the ball better ball security CU you know there was he could have lost a couple lastek that could have absolutely changed the game last week I mean thank God forari Hampton right uh all right Evan what else you got bro Charles Chamberlain this is an interesting question because I've been thinking about this a lot this week and he's Charles ask about the are there any worries in terms of Minnesota being able to march it down the field to set up that game-winning field goal that eventually was missed people forget that drive was started by a pretty bad pass interference on Marcus alen hoop had he had a rough game I mean can't sugar he had a rough game that's a learning process kind of game something that he has to do better um also just think if you look in that drive as a whole UNC stopped kind of pressuring the quarterback they Dro they just rush their standard four Dr which I understand that logic cuz you're like you know this is an obvious passing situation but also if I'm UNC just the whole night Max brosmer really struggled with the Blitz and that UNC defense was getting there with the blitz so I'm honestly not too worried about how that drive played out I think it was a penalty that start of that drive which can change the the psyche of a quarterback completely and also weren there weren there one or two really bad Miss tackles in that drive too there was another Miss Tackle by Marcus Allen when they had little tight end kind of curl over the middle if he makes that hit it's about an eight yard gain it turns into like a 20 yard G catch I felt like that was also an extender of that drive was just a miss miss tackle so it that was just not in my opinion just an indictment on the whole night it was just I felt like a UNC the penalties hurt them that drive they got a big penalty later in the drive when Bo ainson drew the hole I also think there might have just been some some game planning issues I think they got a little too conservative in that scenario and and that's something they can look back on and be like no let's keep the pedal down you know if you get a sack or you get pressure on him you can force him backwards but I guess for you guys with me by you guys you all you all us yeah you gentlemen um for UNC you understand you're going up against an offensive line that's depleted yeah how aggressive are you are you forcing quarterback you rushing five you're not going to like you're not going to like my answer but based off of last week I'm sending at least one on almost every play because he did not do well with people in his face last week uh and I think that you know if if if if Jeff Collins really wants to continue to get Buy in from his guys man turn them loose I'd I'd send I'd send a minimum of one on every single play and then when I say send for those who listen I mean you you know you rust your four those are your typical you know your typical down lineman but I think you got to send at least one extra on every single play uh just to keep him hurried up because again last week when he was under pressure it was not good yeah I would agree with that I would uh you know this is not would not be the game to be conservative why why what what are we preventing against this week right yeah you know and actually when I talked about that uh drive that we were just under discussion I've used the word prevent defense and I haven't used that in forever because either usually these days your defense is one or the other yes uh it's not something where you switch gears like the way they did last week but I will say this uh one of just to keep uh Young Buck here under control uh the uh pen one of those penalties by Marcus Allen may have saved the the game also true yeah because if he doesn't take it it's it's probably a busted coverage and it's it's a touchdown well not only that but uh had the guy caught it dropped yeah that 15 yards further down field and that's would move them a lot easier yeah to the uh to the field goal so this is why you're here perspectives perspectives like that and also because you were damn ball I wouldn't even say that if I wasn't trying to you know J uh young Evan here well it's uh get back at him for for you guys it's not hard to do it's not hard to do Evan give me one more and make it a good one this is a good one because it's the topic of the day Ryan zerat asks what's a good day for Conor Harold I can I'll leave this open-ended stats how looks I'll let you guys taste Buck I will uh I will allow you to take first serve um I'd like to see like 300 yards not passing combo total okay you know if you can some combination that gets you to over 300 yards I think will be great um and then you probably going to add as many as Omar in Hampton wants to add had before he sits down and uh you know that's the flip side of the coin yeah I I just don't think uh Charlotte's defense you know has as many players on it as the offense does yeah and I I think there is some certainly some room there for North Carolina to have some explosive runs and passes against that defense so I'd say 300 would be the number I would pick for Connor but that's running and passing statistic ically I'm I'm going to go away from the obvious because I think I think Buck has laid that out pretty well I'm going to I'm going to actually say I need Conor Harold to limit turnovers today and I'd say like you know whether it's a it's a fumble or a pick you know the thing that we saw all during preseason and everything we heard behind the scenes was that the reason he was struggling to compete with Max Johnson was turnovers and taking care of the ball so today I need to see from you Connor Harold brilliant kid you Max talked all week about you know valid torney of his class really understands the game from a cerebral standpoint what I need to see from him today is taking care of the ball so that's that's the opposite of what he did in in the fourth quarter last week where he's just literally running in the open and just puts it on the ground you can't do that uh if you want to be what I think North Carolina expects of you so you've got to go out take care of the ball don't put it into danger whether that means not throwing into small Windows whether that means not letting uh secondary bait you into throws whether that means just holding on to it while you're running whatever that is if he can keep the the turnovers down to like one or maybe you know if if it's two make sure the second one's you know one that's really forced and earned by Charlotte I think that's a different animal and I think that's probably going to bode well for how the rest of the season plays out so so again short answer Conor Carroll take care of the ball um I I like bucks overall yardage because I think that'll help him from a confidence and a mental standpoint but I think just from a a growth in what North Carolina needs from him I'm going to say just don't don't give the ball to the other guys that's that's just you know that that's probably going to be one of the the simple things that he can do you know you talk about coaching one of the things you always look at is is what is the low hanging fruit what's the thing that I can help this player improve on to immediately see exponential performance increases and for a guy like Connor Harold I think it's it's addition by subtraction if you subtract the turnovers and allow him to keep creating his own momentum and reduce negative plays reduce the big catastrophic turnovers I think he becomes an instantly uh much better player it's like I said in the preseason podcast we did only about four five maybe six elite quarterbacks in college football every year you're seeing that this year everyone else how you separate yourself in that you know above average replacement level area are the quarterbacks that take care of the ball don't make mistakes don't make mistakes I mean just do your job and and do it well and don't get the ball to the other team team I you saw it last week how big was that turnover Amari Campbell forced Game Changer or conversely how big was that interception Max Johnson threw I mean it seemed like before that pick especially when offense is had a premium when when your possessions are reduced and offense is hard to come by certainly it it really really magnifies the how much a a turnover can hurt you or even a negative play can hurt you all right we're gonna pick our winner thank you guys all for getting questions those are actually really good questions I I think you you made bucking I think which is usually a a big advantage and usually indicates a a good question so shout out to everybody who got involved with the show today uh we will pick our winner and let you know after we come back from which he has quite quite frequently uh Buck is filling in today for dinar Cersei our new guy our co-host who is uh who is on location uh doing some doing some research in at another spot but he will be back with us next week per usual and buck is filled in admirably I I will say I don't know that he's had the U I don't know he's had the great coverage grade that Dorris would have but he has done incredibly well in his in his ball pressure when he's been asked to come up into the box and and kind of kind of play downhill I'm not repeating that okay fair enough um anyways as we get you ready here for tar Hills 49ers uh we're going to hand it off here in about 20 minutes to our folks at Tar Hill radio network they will have you uh right up until game time until 3:30 kick ACC Network extra I believe is where I saw this is going to be played ACC Network ACC Network all right so not even the extra the real ACC Network all right no oo just just the just a regular um Buck I want to ask you this is a segment we've start tried to start working in this year what's the most important thing to you today for North Carolina to win you know I always crib Tommy because I think Tommy does a good job of saying you know North Carolina will win if blank what is the one thing that you care about today to see a win from North Carolina that you think is the most important factor in whether or not the tar Hills have a win or not you know this is going to be a little esoteric for some people but I'm going to I'm putting the the outcome of this game on chip Lindsay uh I didn't think last week that he had a game plan for when Conor Harold came into the game I agree I agree with that and despite what we were told all week I I I agree with that wholeheartly yes uh you know that's always uh easy to have that sort of Coach speak ahead of time yes we prepared everybody but of course uh it it did not look like he was prepared when he went in there he was making decisions and handling the ball as if it was just the whole offense was a little foreign to him yeah so uh I think what I would like to see and and what what's going to make the difference in this game is if they have been able to make the transition from a offense built around Max Johnson yeah to an offense built around Conor Harold and you know I think there's a difference in those two offenses right a totally different skill set yeah and leading up to the point where Max Johnson got injured that whole offense was prepared to play one style of football right Harold came in and it wasn't his style of it wasn't like the situation where there has been in the past at UNC on certain occasions where you know the the offense that fit one guy fit his backup as well there just the same offense same skill set same everything this one guy was a little bit better in that kind of in that case the transition is not as Stark as it is when an offense is built one way and then the quarterback is not that guy that was designed to run that offense it's interesting you bring that up because not only have we well thank you EV I I no it's it's something I've been thinking about with chip Lindsay and that yes throughout the week they all said you know we've got two Gam game plans for Conor and Max and I can understand the coach speak behind that and clearly they did not have a game plan for Connor it was it was evident or if they did it was the most vanilla whitebred game plan known to man whereas throughout the whole off season or mainly in that training camp portion they talked about this offense is is getting two different styles of offenses put in one for Conor and one for Max we're going to see that today if that is truly the case because that's the case you're going to see a more seamless transition into today's games if that's not the case you can tell they kind of started from ground zero this week and it's something that is going to take a building process which when you're UNC that's why you have these three games in this stretch before conference play starts to kind of figure out how this offense can look and what it can be but yes I do think this is a massive chip Lindsay game like Buck said clearly there wasn't a plan for Connor even when Max was in the game I thought specifically in that first half I don't think they did a good job game I I didn't think they played to Max his strengths um so it's going to be it's going to be super interesting to see how they approach this with Conor today in his first start at Keenan Buck I got to say uh shout out to somebody in the uh uh Brian Evans in the chat on on on you replacing Doris he said instead of getting the rude boy we have the sage man well thank you very much sir shout out to Brian Evans because he popped me with that one um when I'm thinking about the one thing that I think is important well actually do you have a one thing or or do you feel like that do you feel like that was kind of your one thing I'm I'm going to give you a second crack at the Apple here so my one thing is Amari Hampton had 35 five touches last week that's way too much 30 rushes five receptions of well hang on we did I I will say Staples said last week on inside Carolina Live that if if Chip Lindsay had a running back that had 30 or if they had 30 or 40 carries he was probably happy with the result of the all that said we did kind of predict that that might be the way things shook out but I will ask you geta hit sir in an Ideal World I would love for his touches to be under 15 today I really just it's going to be tough it maybe half half run and pass funny you say that 15 funny you say that because the guy right behind him what what do we know about that today for Darwin Barlo yeah right now Adam Jeremiah doing good work in the Box it looks like Darwin Barlo currently is in what they called sneaker Street closed looking early early in early in warm-ups so his status might be up in the air you've already had Caleb Hood who was out last week they said they hoped he'd be healthy this week you don't know what the situation is there I mean so there's a potential bring in the bullet got Daven and then behind that uh Char French Charleston French maybe Jordan Lou Jordan Lou yeah we're we're going to have to get really really deep in oura so that's where I kind of take back my in an Ideal World I would like Marian's touches to be under 15 that he may have to have more than 15 just from the standpoint of UNC doesn't have four running backs in as long as we're not giving the ball to Zack Hedrick I feel like we're doing okay um he is standing right behind you Buck and he is terrible terrible at running the football a good human being but a terrible running back I think my one thing today uh I mentioned earlier and I hate to harp on turnovers but I looking at it from a larger context right if the whole goal of today is to start the process of this team having Connor harell at qb1 I think you look at this as part of a hole maybe the next three four games are a hole I think it's got to be Connor Herold getting confidence it's got to be calling a game that allows him to get confidence make throws easy for him give him options you know I talked earlier about the gust miles on tree where you've got you know a full-on you've got nine sometimes 10 routes out of every out of out of every receiver I think you need to kind of dumb that down for Conor harrold not because he's not smart but just to get him confidence that's what I wanted to see last week with Max Johnson are some some easy throws to start the game to get him some momentum so today I want to see easy throws uh I don't think you have to make the game plan and completely vanilla but I do want you to make some things to start the game easy for him to build momentum and then today you build momentum let him get confident as you go into next week to build more momentum get more confidence so I think the game plan needs to be something where it's not a lot of not a lot of outs not a lot of deep throws you know where he's having you hit small Windows those outs are tough absolutely tough throws and so I I think I think it's things like moving the pocket allow him to get outside where he can he can think and see the field a little more clearly but it's whatever the game plan is I think it needs to be about momentum building confidence for a new quarterback so that he feels good in the next week of practice as qb1 and then can go into the next game as qb1 and build more confidence I think that's that's the big the big thing that I'm worried about here is is if you're telling me I've got to get one thing today for positivity I think it has to be those has to be those kind of stacking of of play calls and decisions that will get him confident um you Evan mentioned the the the note about Darwin Barlo being in Street Clos today uh obviously if you're following inside Carolina you would know those sorts of things uh and you would know that that that that news is is probably the biggest so far today but coming out of this game and I I hate to put this Juju into the air but I think we wouldn't be doing our jobs if we didn't I think injuries today are important I think North Carolina needs to stay healthy in a game like this I think they need to get some reps and and try to void uh avoid the injury bug getting involved in that locker room at all again what say you in at least in that respect hand in hand with that play a lot of guys yeah give those guys more opportunities to get in especially defensively is there a number players you're looking for or just you want to get through the 2D I'd say 30 25 say 30 plus if it's a type of game I think it could potentially be that's fair yeah um get some guys in there and that will help with the injury risk right right so um yeah you don't want to get crazy and lose you know three or four players in a game a lot of times that's uh not we got a a birthday party going on close by they're they're they're doing Cara okay and it is uh it is a thing it is it is certainly a thing that is happening right now yeah Buck I'd rather hear you talk than hear them sing okay well that's where I'm going is uh you know give give some guys a chance to play as many opportunities as you can if you get a big lead there's there's no point for any starter to be playing in the fourth quarter yeah so yeah Evan do you do you get the feeling there's probably a are there any certain guys that you think get that opportunity before others are there certain guys you think that the staff is look I would have said Darwin Barlo until until now but who's who's the guy that you think is probably going to be the the first one they try to move in and and and and and work into work into the the normal rotation well I want to see more SNS from Bo ainson just because he only had 18 compared to De Evans week one but I'm not going to count him because again I just see him as like a a half a starter at this point I think a player you really need to get just reps in and worked in and just it's important for depth is is Caleb Lali I mean you need that death at linebacker and you saw him come in early in that Minnesota game and he missed a tackle and that's a great teaching point do you believe the thought that that we heard from Jeff Collins when he said really reason Caleb Lali didn't play more is because we were getting off the field so quick do you buy that I'm not saying he's lying I'm just okay that sounds I don't know I don't think it was more so like they were docking him for missing that tackle but I think it was more Mari Campbell played a really good game I mean he played really well but that gets us right back to the problems they've had where true how do we take you how do we take Jeremiah gimmel off the field how do we take Cedric gray off the field like don't put yourself right back in that place because you have an embarrassment of talent in one position certainly and that's why I think it's important to get him in the game not only to build confidence in him but so the coaching staff can get that confidence in a player like lavali um gosh I love the it's George Michael Koke is the worst part I mean it's it's this is uh this is not good this is uh well in any event but follow up on this is like the audio version of Duke Northwestern last night is what this is shout out to the shout out to the the tens of people that were at that game um follow up on what Evans is saying you know I I think it's important for them to get guys in the game but also as far as the linebackers are concerned how long has it been since North Carolina did not have a good linebacker CER it's been a minute it's been a minute which which is crazy because you always go back and look and say hey if the defensive line could have been XYZ um and I think back to Sylvester Williams was the last all ACC player they've had on front um you think about man if they' have just had XZ on the front line but they've had such good play at linebacker you wonder how bad things would have been if they didn't have that yeah I mean going back to even converting chazette to a linebacker I mean who foresaw that you know when when that happened I said oh that's that's cute you know they're they're going to let shat play linebacker and turns out to be an L ACC player and now it's an NFL yeah yeah when when's the last time they played three backers they had a third backer a regular one I think the only thing I can think of and this isn't even a regular one I just remember uh Eugene Sant of the Year Davis been a they were playing a traditional 43 they were playing a 425 cuz then they had CU in a 4-3 with but yeah when they had the 4-3 with buts they had legitimate NFL Talent at each one of the three backer spots yeah um but I that that's the last time they were playing it that deep what's what's really uh kind of kind of bums me out is if you think about the guys that the guys they've had at linebacker you know you you just wonder God if they if they could have had maybe less Talent linebacker maybe a little more on the front line a lot of those a lot of those guys uh not I think we may be you know getting out getting away from it a little bit but they were not considered super talented linebackers coming out of high school when they signed Jeremiah gimmel a lot of folks were like what is you know he was a low three star kid and turned out to be an amazing amazing Cedric gray was a three star uh J rat was a freaking quarterback yeah so I mean s was a receiver in high school yes yeah so yeah you know um I I don't think that you know I'm going to give Tommy thigpin a lot of credit here you know because I just do not think you can have a string of that's not luck yeah that's not a string of linebacker core after linebacker core after linebacker core and they all if it wasn't the strongest unit on the team it was close certainly well we got about two minutes left here in the show uh I'm going to go ahead and and buck I know that folks can can hear you tomorrow with uh Tommy and Staples on the day after uh but I'm going to let you make a make a chance to make a pick here if you'd like uh usually we wrap the show with them so I'll let no no no I'm not doing that not even not even win in Rome I prefer critiquing other people fair enough you know it's just a very sort of a sideline of my mind okay to keep up with the he's making me the sacrificial Lan there you go Evan take your shot I I feel like you and Dorris did a good job last week of of picking close wins by North Carolina I think I was the only one that missed that but I'm again like I said last week I'm glad to be wrong I'll ask you who who do you like and give me a score Evan or Rogers got 31 to three UNC um Old North Carolina would say that's a skunking I think the the offense is going to take a bit to get going I wouldn't be surprised if it's you know only maybe one touchdown the first quarter maybe no score after the first quarter but man I think this defense is going to eat today with the Charlotte injuries up front the the approach that Jeff Collins brings that aggressive approach people like to see that that plays out well against uh you know undermatched opponents when you are the aggressor and you're not kind of being conservative and sitting back I think they're going to have a lot of success uh Max Brown Charlotte's quarterback though he is a transfer from Florida I don't I just don't think he's very good all right uh so yeah 31 to three well I'm going to actually so I'm I'm going to go a little uh atypical this week I'm going to 42-10 and I think North Carolina gets a defensive score I think you're going to see a situation where um they get a couple of different possessions based on that defensive aggression and I think somebody uh somebody on the defense going to go to the baj high today I think there's going to be preference for who you would like to see it doesn't have to be who you think but like who would you like to see on unc's defense celebra in the end zone I think Elijah huzzy deserves it um I'd love to see him get one in house and I think he's got the ability to do it he's shown his elusiveness on punt return but I think that's go 4210 heels uh I do think they will get a I do think they'll get a defensive touchdown boys this has been a blast first home game of the year let's put a bow on it let's go uh partake in whatever it is you partake in
