ious about how we use the most precious natural resource and what do I mean when I say that look I I I I wish that I could invite every single one of you to see this country from the perspective that I've seen it from over the last seven weeks because running as vice president you you fly everywhere you talk to different people you get to see this country in a totally new light and I will tell you we have the most beautiful country in the history of the world we've got the best natural resources we've got the best people the best workers we have an incredible thing but the best natural resource that we have and we still have it even today is that we have millions of young people who are willing to put on a uniform and if the country demands it sacrifice their lives for their fellow countrymen amazing to think about what that means and what that requires but we have got to preserve that natural resource to the Next Generation we have a major recruitment crisis in this country as I speak and the reason I think we have that crisis is because we have not used that resource we have not preserved that resource and we have not fought enough for the people who put on that uniform wear those multiple hats and make this country a better place now I know one of the most important issues for our Guardsmen is that they go and they do everything that's asked of them but sometimes they don't have the parody and health care options afterwards and that is something we've got to fix and that's something we've got to change and we are going to do it every every single day and I and I and I say I say that as as a person who believes that whether I'm I'm in the senate or as your next vice president we're not just here to make promises but my God if you get out there and put on the uniform of this country and you're going and helping with a firefighting Mission and you're going and helping rescue flood victims and you're going into a natural disaster area as somebody told me earlier nobody's asking you whether you're active Duty or Reserve nobody's asking you whether you're a marine or Guardsman so we ought to give everybody who puts on that uniform the same benefits the same honor and the same respect and and and let me just leave you w with this thought and I I think look we had of course the great Bishop give an opening prayer and I'm I'm actually a convert to the Catholic faith and there's like three of us over here apparently God bless you guys but you know one one of one of the things you know when you when you go to Europe when you go to Europe you see these old buildings these beautiful buildings these wide streets and I I think it's obviously a great a great thing to see and a great thing to visit and you ask yourself what is the thing in America that lifts up the human Spirit what is the thing in America that I think is really a testament to the American Spirit of innovation the people who conquered the Stars so I believe we're going to go to Mars what is the thing that we really have left as a physical landmark and the answer is the American skyscraper it was invented in this country of course New York City is the city of the great skyscraper and when I come here whether it was you the the the first time during Fleet Week as a young marine and by the way thanks to all the investment bankers who bought us beers I had a terrible headache the next morning we had a good night the night before but whether whether it's coming with my my wife and and walking these beautiful streets and seeing these incredible Testaments to human drive and Innovation and Ingenuity these buildings are I think the Great American commitment to the physical infrastructure of our world the Great American Legacy and there's a reason why they knock down two of the most beautiful architectural specimens in the entire city of New York in the entire world because that is the great contribution of this country the skyscraper and while I am sad and while I look at these old buildings those those two twin towers and think about how great it would be to see them in the New York skyline Here We Stand 102 stories above the ground in a building that is not just the tallest building in the United States of America but is a testament to the fact that yes we build but when other people destroy we build up again and we build up more powerful and taller and bigger and that is to me that to me speaks more about the American Spirit than almost anything that we didn't just take a punch but we responded to it we counter punched of course but we built this building back in incredible Testament to the people who lost their lives and to the Great American Spirit that makes this city and this entire country run so with gratitude for the national Guardsmen who have served with Incredible gratitude to the National Guardsmen who serve today thank you for serving and fighting for that American Spirit as your next vice president I promise to do the same God bless you guys and thanks for having me that in the aftermath of 9/11 as Dan said earlier we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit it wasn't just Democrats or Republicans in all of us were United together as one nation as one people both in how we dealt with the tragedy of 9/11 but also how we responded to it and the the the the folks that we sent overseas it was everybody it was black white Latino it was every political party it was people whose families had been in this country for 10 generations and people whose families had been in this country for 10 minutes and we did it all together and we did it because we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit but I say this as again a person who was a junior in high school when 9/11 happened I think that our leadership took advantage of that and they didn't do what was necessary with that incredible natural resource of patriotic sentiment after 911 because like any natural resource you can do one of two things with it you can build upon it you can use it wisely and preserve it for the next generation or you can squander it and I think one of the mistakes that we made frankly because we didn't always choose our fights wisely and also because people like me our political leaders fought over some stupid things we squandered that incredible reservoir of patriotic spirit and I promise whether it's as your next vice president or continuing to serve the great people of Ohio's United States Senator I will never take that spirit that that embod IES 911 in this country I will never take it for granted and I will promise and fight to preserve it and to build upon it which is what we should have done 23 years [Applause] ago thank [Applause] you please please thank you all thank you all so much but please I'm a politician with a microphone I've got about another 4 and a/ half hours to go so buckle yourselves in get a nice drink no I know we got a lot of great speakers so let let me just say a few more things um so first of all speaking of that patriotic Reservoir I will say as a republican VP nominee coming in a you know fractious political environment I'm sure we've got Democrats and Republicans in this room I expected to not get nearly as warm of a welcome in the the city of New York and I I will say that we have been president Trump and and me I I speak for both of us saying we are so thrilled to be here in this city and to get to remember the incredible sacrifice on 911 and and frankly to celebrate the American Spirit that came after it and I've had so many good conversations I've had so many good moments of talking to Firefighters and police officers family members who lost their lives on 911 this is a great City in a great country and I'm very proud to be here today but I I I will say I even got my I took you know my my wife and I went on a walk in Central Park just a couple of hours ago we had a little downtime and I think the most welcoming thing that I got was The Universal Manhattan symbol of we're number one from somebody who is nearby so I it's been good vibes all the way down here in New York City but all all all kidding aside we we've gotten a great reception and I'm sure that vice president or President Biden and vice president Harris got a great reception because this is a great country and we're here to celebrate an incredible Spirit of patriotism in the wake of 9/11 and nobody nobody embodies that more than the national Guardsman who served this country honorably over the last last 23 years and well before and I'll tell you thank you and I I'll tell you a story so this was um this was actually when I was in Iraq I believe you had this terrible hurricane k of course the levies broke in New Orleans and I had a dear friend of mine who was in the Marine Corps who went down there to volunteer and to help out the First Responders and he met a lot of national Guardsmen down there and a lot of those National Guardsmen were planning to deploy to Iraq the very next year and I think about the difference between the Marines and National Guards and of course everybody has honorable service but one of the things we ask our national Guardsmen is to be leaders in their Community is to be teachers and firefighters and First Responders to go into the floods and the fires one minute but then to go to war the very next minute and that's an extraordinarily difficult job it's something that not everybody or even most people in this country can do and again it is a great great Testament to this country that we have so many who are able to do it and able to do it well and that is what I think about our national Guardsmen they can juggle many balls they can wear many hats God bless you guys and thank you for doing everything you do it's an incredible thing and and I think the best way to honor the victims of 9911 but also to honor all the national Guardsmen and all of our troops who served in the wake of 911 is again to be careful and judicious about how we use the most precious natural resource and what do I mean when I say that look I I I I wish that I could invite every single one of you to see this country from the perspective that I've seen it from over the last 7 weeks because running as vice president you need you fly everywhere you talk to different people you get to see this country in a frankly to celebrate the American Spirit that came after it and I've had so many good conversations I've had so many good moments of talking to Firefighters and police officers family members who lost their lives on 911 this is a great City and a great country and I'm very proud to be here today but I I I will say I even got my I took you know my wife and I went on a walk in Central Park just a couple of hours ago we had a little downtime and I think the most welcoming thing that I got was The Universal Manhattan symbol of Weir number one from somebody who is nearby so I It's Been Good Vibes all the way down here in New York City but all all K all kidding aside we we've gotten a great reception and I'm sure that vice president or President Biden and vice president Harris got a great reception because this is a great country and we're here to celebrate an incredible Spirit of patriotism in the wake of 9/11 and nobody nobody embodies that more than the national Guardsman who served this country honorably over the nas last 23 years and well before and I'll tell you thank you and I I'll tell you a story so this was um this was actually when I was in Iraq I believe you had this terrible hurricane krina of course the levies broke in New Orleans and I had a dear friend of mine who was in the Marine Corps who went down there to volunteer and to help out the First Responders and he met a lot of national Guardsmen down there and a lot of those National Guardsmen were planning to deploy to arest back the very next year and I think about the difference between the Marines and National Guardsman of course everybody has honorable service but one of the things we ask our national Guardsmen is to be leaders in their Community is to be teachers and firefighters and First Responders to go into the floods and the fires one minute but then to go to war the very next minute and that's an extraordinarily difficult job it's something that not everybody or even most people in this country can do and again it is a great great Testament to to this country that we have so many who are able to do it and able to do it well and that is what I think about our national Guardsmen they can juggle many balls they can wear many hats God bless you guys and thank you for doing everything you do it's an incredible thing and and I think the best way to honor the victims of 9911 but also to honor all the national Guardsmen and all of our troops who served in the wake of 911 is again to be careful and judicious about how we use the most precious natural resource and what do I mean when I say that look I I I I wish that I could invite every single one of you to see this country from the perspective that I've seen it from over the last seven weeks because running as vice president you you fly everywhere you talk to different people you get to see this country in a totally new light and I will tell you we have the most beautiful country in the history of the world we've got the best natural resources we've got the best people the best workers we have an incredible thing but the best natural resource that we have and we still have it even today is that we have millions of young people who are willing to put on a uniform and if the country demands it sacrifice their lives for their fellow countrymen amazing to think about what that means and what that requires but we have got to preserve that natural resource to the Next Generation we have a major recruitment crisis crisis in this country as I speak and the reason I think we have that crisis is because we have not used that resource we have not preserve that resource and we have not fought enough for the people who put on that uniform wear those multiple hats and make this country a better place now I know one of the most important issues for our Guardsmen is that they go and they do everything that's asked of them but sometimes they don't have the parody in health care options afterwards and that is something we've got to fix and that's something we've got to change and we are going to do it every single day and I and and I say I say that as as a person who believes that whether I'm I'm in the senate or as your next vice president we're not just here to make promises but my God if you get out there and put on the uniform of this country and you're going and helping with a firefighting Mission and you're going and helping rescue flood victims and you're going into a natural disaster area as somebody told me earlier nobody's asking you whether you're active duty or Reserve nobody's asking you whether you're a marine or Guardsman so we ought to give everybody who puts on that uniform the same benefits the same honor and the same [Applause] respect and and and let me just leave you w with this thought and I I think look we had of course the great Bishop give an opening prayer and I'm I'm actually a convert to the Catholic faith and [Music] there's like three of us over here apparently God bless you guys but you know one one of one of the things you know when you when you go to Europe when you go to Europe you see these old buildings these beautiful buildings these wide streets and I I think it's obviously a great a great thing to see and a great thing to visit and you ask yourself what is the thing in America that lifts up the human Spirit what is the thing in America that I think is really a testament to the American Spirit of innovation the people who conquered the Stars so I believe we're going to go to Mars what is the thing that we really have left as a physical landmark and the answer is the American skyscraper it was invented in this country of course New York City is the city of the great skyscraper and when I come here whether it's was you the the the first time during Fleet Week as a young marine and by the way thanks to all the investment bankers who bought us beers I had a terrible headache the next morning we had a good night the night before but whether whether it's coming with my my wife and and walking these beautiful streets and seeing these incredible Testaments to human drive and Innovation and Ingenuity these buildings are I think the Great American commitment to the physical infrastructure of our world the Great American Legacy and there's a reason why they knock down two of the most beautiful architectural specimens in the entire city of New York in the entire world because that is the great contribution of this country the skyscraper and while I am sad and while I look at these old old buildings those those two twin towers and think about how great it would be to see them in the New York skyline Here We Stand 102 stories above the ground in a building that is not just the tallest building in the United States of America but is a testament to the fact that yes we build but when other people destroy we build up again and we build up more powerful and taller and bigger and that is to me that to me speaks more about the American Spirit than almost anything that we didn't just take a punch but we responded to it we counterpunched of course but we built this building back in incredible Testament to the people who lost their lives and to the Great American Spirit that makes this city and this entire country run so with gratitude for the national Guardsmen who have served with Incredible gratitude to the National Guardsmen who serve today thank you for serving and fighting for that American Spirit as your next vice president I promise to do the same God bless you guys and thanks for having me that in the aftermath of 911 as Dan said earlier we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit it wasn't just Democrats or Republicans and all of us were United together as one nation as one people both in how we dealt with the tragedy of 911 but also how we responded to it and the the the folks that we sent overseas it was everybody it was black white Latino it was every political party it was people whose families had been in this country for 10 generations and people whose families had been in this country for 10 minutes and we did it all together and we did it because we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit but I say this as again a person who's a junior in high school when 9/11 happened I think that our leadership took advantage of that and they didn't do what was necessary with that incredible natural resource of patriotic sentiment after 9/11 cuz like any natural resource you can do one of two things with it you can build upon it you can use it wisely and preserve it for the next generation or you can squander it and I think one of the mistakes that we made frankly because we didn't always choose our fights wisely and also because people like me our political leaders fought over some stupid things we squandered that incredible reservoir of patriotic spirit and I promise whether it's as your next vice president or continuing to serve the great people of Ohio's United States Senator I will never take that spirit that that embodies 911 in this country I will never take it for granted and I will promise and fight to preserve it and to build upon it which is what we should have done 23 years [Applause] ago thank [Applause] you please please thank you all thank you all so much but please I'm a politician with a microphone I've got about another four and a half hours to go so buckle yourselves in get a nice drink no I know we got a lot of great speakers so let let me just say a few more things um so first of all speaking of that patriotic Reservoir I will say as a republican VP nominee coming in a you know fractious political environment I'm sure we've got Democrats and Republicans in this room I expected to not get nearly as warm of a welcome in the the city of New York and I I will say that we have been from president Trump and and me I I speak for both of us saying we are so Spirit than almost anything that we didn't just take a punch but we responded to it we counter punched of course but we built this building back in incredible Testament to the people who lost their lives and to the Great American Spirit that makes this city and this entire country run so with gratitude for the national Guardsmen who have served with Incredible gratitude to the National Guardsmen who serve today thank you for serving and fighting for that American Spirit as your next vice president I promise to do the same God bless you guys and thanks for having me that in the aftermath of 911 as Dan said earlier we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit it wasn't just Democrats Republicans and all of us were United together as one nation as one people both in how we dealt with the tragedy of 9/11 but also how we responded to it and the the the folks that we sent overseas it was everybody it was black white Latino it was every political party it was people whose families had been in this country for 10 generations and people whose families had been in this country for 10 minutes and we did it all together and we did it because we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit but I say this as again a person who was a junior in high school when 9/11 happened I think that our leadership took advantage of that and they didn't do what was necessary with that incredible natural resource of patriotic sentiment after 9911 because like any natural resource you can do one of two things with it you can build upon it you can use it wisely and preserve it for the next generation or you can squander it and I think one of the mistakes that we made frankly because we didn't always choose our fights wisely and also because people like me our political leaders fought over some stupid things we squandered that incredible reservoir of patriotic spirit and I promise whether it's as your next vice president or continuing to serve the great people of Ohio's United States Senator I will never take that spirit that that embodies 911 in this country I will never take it for granted and I will promise and fight to preserve it and to build upon it which is what we should have done 23 years ago [Applause] thank [Applause] you please please thank you all thank you all so much but please I'm a politician with a microphone I've got about another 4 and 1 half hours to go so buckle yourselves in get a nice drink no I know we got a lot of great speakers so let let me just say a few more things um so first of all speaking of that patriotic Reservoir I will say as a republican VP nominee coming in a you know fractious political environment I'm sure we've got Democrats and Republicans in this room I expected to not get nearly as warm of a welcome in the the city of New York and I I will say that we have been from president Trump and and me I I speak for both of us saying we are so thrilled to be here in this city and to get to remember the incredible sacrifice on 911 and and frankly to celebrate the American spirit that came after it and I've had so many good conversations I've had so many good moments of talking to Firefighters and police officers a family members who lost their lives on 911 this is a great City and a great country and I'm very proud to be here today but I I I will say I even got I took you know my wife and I went on a walk in Central Park just a couple of hours ago we had a little downtime and I think the most welcoming thing that I got was The Universal Manhattan symbol of we're number one from somebody who is nearby so I it's been good vibes all the way down here in New York City but all all all kidding aside we we've gotten a great reception and I'm sure that vice president or President Biden and vice president Harris got a great reception because this is a great country and we're here to celebrate an incredible Spirit of patriotism in the wake of 911 and nobody nobody embodies that more than the national Guardsmen who served this country honorably over the last last 23 years and well before and I'll tell you thank you and I I'll tell you a story so th This was um this was actually when I was in Iraq I believe you had this terrible Hurricane Katrina of course the levies broke in New Orleans and I had a dear friend of mine who was in the Marine Corps who went down there to volunteer and to help out the First Responders and he met a lot of national Guardsmen down there and a lot of those National Guardsmen were planning to deploy to Iraq the very next year and I think about the difference between the Marines and National Guards and of course everybody has honorable service but one of the things we ask our national Guardsmen is to be leaders in their Community is to be teachers and firefighters and First Responders to go into the floods and the fires one minute but then to go to war the very next minute and that's an extraordinarily difficult job it's something that not everybody or even most people in this country can do and again it is a great great Testament to this country that we have so many who are able to do it and able to do it well and that is what I think about our national Guardsmen they can juggle many balls they can wear many hats God bless you guys and thank you for doing everything you do it's an incredible thing and and I think the best way to honor the victims of 911 but also to honor all the national Guardsmen and all of our troops who served in the wake of 911 is again to be careful and judicious about how we use the most precious natural resource and what do I mean when I say that look I I I I wish that I could invite every single one of you to see this country from the perspective that I've seen it from over the last seven weeks because running as vice president you you fly everywhere you talk to different people you get to see this country in a totally new light and I will tell you we have the most beautiful country in the history of the world we've got the best natural resources we've got the best people the best workers ERS we have an incredible thing but the best natural resource that we have and we still have it even today is that we have millions of young people who are willing to put on a uniform and if the country demands it sacrifice their lives for their fellow countrymen amazing to think about what that means and what that requires but we have got to preserve that natural resource to the Next Generation we have a major recruitment crisis in this country as I speak and the reason I think we have that crisis is because we have not used that resource we have not preserved that resource and we have not fought enough for the people who put on that uniform wear those multiple hats and make this country a better place now I know one of the most important issues for our Guardsmen is that they go and they do everything that's asked of them but sometimes they don't have the parody and health care options afterwards and that is something we've got to fix and that's something we've got to change and we are going to do it every single day and I and and I say I say that as as a person who believes that whether I'm I'm in the senate or as your next vice president we're not just here to make promises but my God if you get out there and put on the uniform of this country and you're going and helping with a firefighting Mission and you're going and helping rescue flood victims and you're going into a natural disaster area as somebody told me earlier nobody's asking you whether you're active duty or Reserve nobody's asking you whether you're a marine or Guardsman so we ought to give everybody who puts on that uniform the same benefits the same honor and the same [Applause] respect and and and let me just leave you w with this thought and I I think look we had of course the great Bishop give an opening prayer and I'm I'm actually a convert to the Catholic faith and there's like three of us over here apparently God bless you guys but you know what one of one of the things you know when you when you go to Europe when you go to Europe you see these old buildings these beautiful buildings these wide streets and I I think it's obviously a great a great thing to see and a great thing to visit and you ask yourself what is the thing in America that lifts up the human Spirit what is the thing in America that I think is really a testament to the American Spirit of inovation the people who conquered the Stars so I believe we're going to go to Mars what is the thing that we really have left as a physical landmark and the answer is the American skyscraper it was invented in this country of course New York City is the city of the great skyscraper and when I come here whether it's was you the the the first time during Fleet Week as a young marine and by the way thanks to all the investment bankers who bought us beers I had a terrible headache the next morning we had a good night the night before but whether whether it's coming with my my wife and and walking these beautiful streets and seeing these incredible Testaments to human drive and Innovation and Ingenuity these buildings are I think the Great American commitment to the physical infrastructure of our world the Great American Legacy and there's a reason why they knock down two of the most beautiful architectural specimens in the entire city of New York in the entire world because that is the great contribution of this country the skyscraper and while I am sad and while I look at these old buildings those those two twin towers and think about how great it would be to see them in the New York skyline Here We Stand 102 stories above the ground in a building that is not just the person who believes that whether I'm I'm in the senate or as your next vice president we're not just here to make promises but my God if you get out there and put on the uniform of this country and you're going and helping with a firefighting Mission and you're going and helping rescue flood victims and you're going into a natural disaster area as somebody told me earlier nobody's asking you whether you're active duty or Reserve nobody's asking you whether you're a marine or Guardsman so we ought to give everybody who puts on that uniform the same benefits the same honor and the same respect and and and let me just leave you w with this thought and I I think look we had of course a great Bishop give and opening prayer and I'm I'm actually a convert to the Catholic faith and there's like three of us over here apparently God bless you guys but you know one one of one of the things you know when you when you go to Europe when you go to Europe you see these old buildings these beautiful buildings these wide streets and I I think it's obviously a great a great thing to see and a great thing to visit and you ask yourself what is the thing in America that lifts up the human Spirit what is the thing in America that I think is really a testament to the American Spirit of innovation the people who conquered the stars who I believe we're going to go to Mars what is the thing that we really have left as a physical landmark and the answer is the American skyscraper it was invented in this country of course New York City is the city of the great skyscraper and when I come here whether it's you the the the first time during Fleet Week as a young marine and by the way thanks to all the investment bankers who bought us beers I had a terrible headache the next morning we had a good night the night before but whether whether it's coming with my my wife and and walking these beautiful streets and seeing these incredible Testaments to human drive and Innovation and Ingenuity these buildings are I think the Great American commitment to the physical infrastructure of our world the Great American Legacy and there's a reason why they knock down two of the most beautiful architectural specimens in the entire city of New York in the entire world because that is the great contribution of this country the skyscraper and while I am sad and while I look at these old buildings those those two twin towers and think about how great it would be to see them in the New York skyline Here We Stand 102 stories above the ground in a building that is not just the tallest building in the United States of America but is a testament to the fact that yes we build but when other people destroy we build up again and we build up more powerful and taller and bigger and that is to me that to me speaks more about the American Spirit than almost anything that we didn't just take a punch but we responded to it we counter punched of course but we built this building back in incredible Testament to the people who lost their lives and to the Great American Spirit that makes this city and this entire country run so with gratitude for the national Guardsmen who have served with Incredible gratitude to the National Guardsmen who serve today thank you for serving and fighting for that American Spirit as your next vice president I promise to do the same God bless you guys and thanks for having me that in the aftermath of 911 as Dan said earlier we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit it wasn't just Democrats and Republicans in all of us were United Ed together as one nation as one people both in how we dealt with the tragedy of 9/11 but also how we responded to it and the the the folks that we sent overseas it was everybody it was black white Latino it was every political party it was people whose families had been in this country for 10 generations and people whose families had been in this country for 10 minutes and we did it all together and we did it because we had this incredible reservoir of patriotic Spirit but I say this as again a person who was a junior in high school when 911 happened I think that our leadership took advantage of that and they didn't do what was necessary with that incredible natural resource of patriotic sentiment after 911 because like any natural resource you can do one of two things with it you can build upon it you can use it wisely and preserve it for the next generation or you can squander it and I think one of the mistakes that we made frankly because we didn't always choose our fights wisely and also because people like me our political leaders fought over some stupid things we squandered that incredible reservoir of patriotic spirit and I promise whether it's as your next vice president or continuing to serve the great people of Ohio's United States Senator I will never take that spirit that that embodies 911 in this country I will never take it for granted and I will promise and fight to preserve it and to build upon it which is what we should have done 23 years [Applause] ago thank you [Applause] please please thank you all thank you all so much but please I'm a politician with a microphone I've got about another 4 and a half hours to go so buckle yourselves in get a nice drink no I know we got a lot of great speakers so let let me just say a few more things um so first of all speaking of that patriotic Reservoir I will say as a republican VP nominee coming in a you know fractious political environment I'm sure we've got Democrats and Republicans in this room I expected to not get nearly as warm of a welcome in the the city of New York and I I will say that we have been from president Trump and and me I I speak for both of us saying we are so thrilled to be here in this city and to get to remember the incredible sacrifice on 911 and and frankly to celebrate the American Spirit that came after it and I've had so many good conversations I've had so many good moments of talking to Firefighters and police officers family members who lost their lives on 9/11 this is a great City and a great country and I'm very proud to be here today but I I I will say I even got I took you know my wife and I went on a walk in Central Park just a couple of hours ago we had a little downtime and I think the most welcoming thing that I got was The Universal Manhattan symbol of Weir number one from somebody who is nearby so I it's been good vies all the way down here in New York City but all all all kidding aside we we've gotten a great reception and I'm sure that vice president or President Biden and vice president Harris got a great reception because this is a great country and we're here to celebrate an incredible Spirit of patriotism in the wake of 9/11 and nobody nobody embodies that more than the national Guardsman who served this country honorably over the last last 23 years and well for and I'll tell you thank you and I I'll tell you a story so th This was um this was actually when I was in Iraq I believe you had this terrible Hurricane Katrina of course the levies broke in New Orleans and I had a dear friend of mine who was in the Marine Corps who went down there to volunteer and to help out the First Responders and he met a lot of national Guardsmen down there and a lot of those National Guardsmen were planning to deploy to Iraq the very next year and I think about the difference between the Marines and National Guards and of course everybody has honorable service but one of the things we ask our national Guardsmen is to be leaders in their Community is to be teachers and firefighters and First Responders to go into the floods and the fire is one minute but then to go to war the very next minute and that's an extraordinarily difficult job it's something that not everybody or even most people in this country can do and again it is a great great Testament to this country that we have so many who are able to do it and able to do it well and that is what I think about our national Guardsmen they can juggle mini balls they can wear manyi hats God bless you guys and thank you for doing everything you do it's an incredible [Applause] thing and and I think the best way to honor the victims of 9911 but also to honor all the national Guardsmen and all of our troops who served in the wake of 911 is again to be careful and icious about how we use the most precious natural resource and what do I mean when I say that look I I I I wish that I could invite every single one of you to see this country from the perspective that I've seen it from over the last seven weeks because running as vice president you you fly everywhere you talk to different people you get to see this country in a totally new light and I will tell you we have the most beautiful country in the history of the world we've got the best natural resources we've got the best people the best workers we have an incredible thing but the best natural resource that we have and we still have it even today is that we have millions of young people who are willing to put on a uniform and if the country demands it sacrifice their lives for their fellow countrymen amazing to think about what that means and what that requires but we have got to preserve that natural resource to the Next Generation we have a major recruitment crisis in this country as I speak and the reason I think we have that crisis is because we have not used that resource we have not preserved that resource and we have not fought enough for the people who put on that uniform wear those multiple hats and make this country a better place now I know one of the most important issues for our Guardsmen is that they go and they do everything that's asked of them but sometimes they don't have the parody and health care options afterwards and that is something we've got to fix and that's something we've got to change and we are going to do it every every single day
