thank you for returning to our Channel Dilly NBA player Derk Hami sued her former team in federal court Monday saying the Las Vegas Aces discriminated against her when she announced she was pregnant Hami the three-time allstar and Olympian also listed the league as a defendant in the action filed in federal district court in Nevada which argues WNBA authorities failed to seriously discipline the club after it investigated her accusations last year according to a copy of the complaint in an email a representative for the ases said he could not comment on the litigation he alluded to a statement published last year after the WNBA reviewed Ham's charges that indicated the team is dedicated to supporting its athletes our actions have always been consistent with our responsibility to hold ourselves to the highest Professional Standards the statement stated the wmba did not react to a request for comment an emailed request for comment sent to an address provided on the website of A's head coach Becky Hammond who is named in the suit but not listed as a defendant was not immediately replied Monday night Hami 30 Nowa forward with the Los Angeles Sparks said she told the aces staff of her pregnancy in August 2022 days after she realized she was pregnant with her son Legend and in the weeks after she signed a 2-year contract extension with the club according to the lawsuit after Hami publicly disclosed the pregnancy at a Victory Parade in September the suit says team staff members began treating her differently including failing to pay for her daughter's school tuition and instructing her to leave team provided housing without explanation the team had committed to give both as part of her contract renewal the suit States in a chat the following January the complaint says Hammond question Ham's dedication to the team the complaint claims Hammond accused Hami of having signed the extension when she knew she was pregnant an allegation it says is incorrect and failed to take adequate efforts to prevent getting pregnant Hammond further stated that the Las Vegas Aces needed bodies and that Hami would not be ready to play in time for the start of the next season the complaint alleges saying that Hami informed Hammond she give birth in the offseason and be ready to play by preseason that April the next day on January 16 Hammond told hamy her time with the team was done the suit States 5 days later the aces announced that Hami had been traded to the Sparks the action which does not specify damages and Demands a jury trial also accuses the aces of retaliation the club tried to unjustly obtain Ham's Medical Data the suit States and declined to extend a White House invitation to her after she helped the team win its first D NBA title according to the suit the lead took no efforts to resolve what the lawsuit describes as a clear-cut violation of federal and state anti-discrimination legislation after Hami went out on social media on January 21 2023 about some of the charges in her complaint the WNBA confirmed it had initiated an inquiry on May 16 last year the lead declared in a statement that the Asus had breached League regulations in connection with Ham's contract the WNBA forfeited the team's first round draft selection for 2024 four and punished Hammond for two games without pay according to the lawsuit in their statement last year the team stated it was deeply disappointed by the investigation's result the statement characterized Hammond as a caring human being who forges close relationships with her players and who the team continues to stand behind
