A woman from the town of Carmel is speaking out about her experience with a rare tick borne virus that can cause some serious health issues. It all started six years ago when Megan Summers started experiencing symptoms that were misdiagnosed, including partial seizures, vision loss, joint pain and severe fatigue. In 2021 she was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease and the poo and virus it's carried by deer and woodchuck ticks. Some patients do not experience any symptoms and others may experience flu like symptoms but severe cases can include infections of the brain or spinal cord. 10% of advanced cases are deadly. Megan symptoms improved after rounds of antibiotics and herbal remedies. Now, she is encouraging patients to push for blood testing for all tick borne infections. Tick borne diseases should always be on your rule out list. Um, especially if they're struggling with a lot of neurologic problems. Coming up tonight. At six, we'll hear more from Megan and an infectious disease doctor on what steps you can take to lower your risk for that rare tick borne illness.
