TDG: Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game

[Music] hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the discriminating gamer you know I must confess I don't know much about Greek mythology it was always my achilles kneecap ladies and gentlemen today we're going to go ahead and take a look at last night on Earth from flying frog Productions [Music] we'll get back in the review in just a moment I want to take a minute to ask you to check out my to that channel and now back to the review in last night on Earth from flying frog Productions two to six players take on the roles of either towns folk fing from the zombie apocalypse were the dreaded zombies themselves now this is a game that's been out for years uh and I'm just getting around to doing a review now let me tell you this was a game that back in the day quite quite a while ago George and Holly introduced me to and I had heard about this game long before that my friends George and Holly had introduced me to the game uh they taught me the game I played it I liked it I bought it I owned it for a while played it several times and then uh it didn't survive a purge I think it was I think it was the the great uh move the Texas Purge of 2017 I got rid of it so I'm not going to give a huge rules breakdown just the bare bones here and then I'll give you my thoughts so essentially in this game you're are going to choose various characters various towns folk that are again trying to deal with this zombie apocalypse or depending on player count one or more players will actually take on the roles of the zombies themselves next you will select a scenario this is a specific objective that the towns folk are trying to accomplish in order to win the game and then you will build the the town with the tiles and they will indicate exactly where everything goes now you will have a number of decks here a search deck a Zombie Deck and a lot of different components tokens dice etc for this game now the first thing you do every round is move the Sun Tracker essentially you're going to be moving that down it's a countdown on the very first round the zombie player just puts it on there but then forward he will be moving it down every uh every round the number of spaces is determined by What scenario you're playing and the zombie player will draw four cards if there's two zombie players they'll each draw two but he'll have a hand of cards then that he can play to try to try to thwart the heroes during the game next the zombie player will roll the die to determine if new zombies are going to spawn on the game board now next the zombie player can move all the zombies on the board one space they can move in any direction orthogonally or diagonally and zombies can even move through walls they find ways to get through windows and etc etc so they're pretty good at moving on the game board now if that's zombies in the same space with a hero they're going to fight and I'll discuss combat a little bit later after fights are resolved then you place those newly spawned zombies you roll a die and depending on the various numbers on the board it's going to tell you where those zombies will spawn now during the hero's turn they are going to move they can move up to their uh speed on their on their player board uh they can exchange items if they have items they can go ahead and swap those back and forth next if they have range weapons they can go ahead and fire at zombies from a range and and finally if they're in the same space with the zombie they can fight that zombie now during a fight the zombie will roll one die and the hero Will Roll two dice now if the zombie rolls higher than both of the hero dice then the hero will take a wound if the hero rolls higher than the zombie dice then he fends them off now nothing happens essentially he's able to get him out of the way and he's not uh he doesn't take a wound but nor does anything happen to the zombie now if the player if the hero rolls doubles they kill the zombie now of course if the heroes take multiple wounds eventually they will be out of the game and they themselves can be turned into a zombie and used by the zombie player and critically during combat there will be opportunities to play cards some of your cards will say in combat now some of the cards are weapons uh hero can carry two weapons at a time four items total two weapons um so he can use those in combat that may increase his chances and then as I say the zombie may have various cards that come out to play that can hinder the uh human players there also event cards that come out of the deck which must be resolved uh as the card says so players go back and forth taking turns the zombie player he is of course uh moving his zombies he's spawning new zombies he's attacking with his zombies the Hero player they're moving they're shooting they're exchanging cards they're attacking they're going back and forth and back and forth trying to achieve their objectives now the heroes can also search when they're inside buildings they can go ahead and draw search cards in the hopes of uh gaining cards that will help them on their quest to fulfill their OB objectives but whoever is the first to fulfill their objectives will win last night on earth now as I say there's there's a lot more going on in this game that is just the bare overview uh of the game as I say this is a game I played a lot back in the day and really enjoyed but again it's one that didn't survive a purge but over the years this is one that I really regretted giving away and for a time like I say I kind of felt like zombie side um killed it for me but really the more I think thought about it and then of course having played it again recently I realized they're very different game Zombie side is a Cooperative game where you're playing against Ai and there's something really special here in last night on Earth where you're playing against um another player or players is the zombies now personally again it depends on on the player counts I think the the best way I like to play it is with four humans and one zombie uh that was my favorite way to play it if you play it with six then there's two zombie I always like playing it with with that Dynamic I like one I like an all versus one Dynamic and I thought this game did it pretty well but I really like the the the tropes that they have here and the characters they have here and the way the cards are so thematic and interesting and really remind you of these these these bovie horror films that I always love that I always got a kick out of and so the game feels um looking back on it and then playing it again I I'm increasingly impressed with with with how unique this game feels you think monster is a zombie game but it does something really special and really different and I'm glad I've got it back in my in my collection here I recently played again fortune and Glory which was a game I had gotten rid of before and I forgot how much fun that game was and these games uh flying frogs just done some fantastic games over the years I've still got the um Touch of Evil which is one of my favorite deck builders but I haven't played it in a while so I need to hit that one again uh Touch of Evil dark Gothic right the full Touch of Evil game I I had that and I played that a few times and again at some point I got rid of that one too uh I really enjoyed it though um so I'm really glad I've got this one back in my collection it's it's a heck a lot of fun it it it's tense it's fun there's good decisions uh for both sides when do you play cards how do you how do you when's the optimum time to use an item or a weapon um what kind of attack do you want to make you know um should I should I should I go try to you know use the keys now or should I go give another player a a weapon and it's intense too as the you know just like in a zombie side when the when the horde starts coming and here when the horde starts building up it's really scary because again you can fend off the monsters relatively easily but it's a whole another ball game to kill them you need weapons or you need to get really lucky with the dice but gosh it's fun it's tense it's scary it does a great job of presenting the theme in a really fun way so I really enjoy last night on earth don't think I'll be giving this one I don't think I'll be purging this one again anytime soon it's really really good um so on the Cody scale of 1 to 10 I'm going to give last night on earth an eight uh I think it's just a fantastic game it it it fires on all thrusters I think maybe uh there is there there's I don't want to say there's too much chance I like the chance I love rolling dice but maybe this game would be a little bit higher if there was maybe slightly less chance I might rate it a bit higher but as it is an eight just means it's it's fantastic it's outstanding uh really a lot of fun if you like dice rolling games if you like the the zombie theme uh
