1st Quarter you guys have come down here last week at this time it would be a little bit of a struggle maybe for you in the third or fourth quarter he felt like his team would be just fine here tonight I think they will be second alltime meeting between these two opponents the only other time they played back in 2013 in the Panthers lone season in the colonial Panthers 417 winners that day I can say I was there I actually saw it yes folks I witnessed that game the Panthers got the win up at Rhode Island uh it was a big because it was a frustrating season and I don't know maybe the RS want to get some back on us tonight it's been a while it has been a while and the opening kickoff is coming down to Robert Lewis he will field it at the 5 yd line and Lewis will make it back to the 24 and that's where the Panthers will put the ball on offense for the first time today following a 19 yd return by Robert Lewis switched to number one this year they're expecting a big season from him and hoping that he can stay healthy there a lot of things that have changed around with this Georgia State team during the off season some new faces in some places some faces have departed we talked about that a lot with Sean OT he's TI of talk talking about that the people that are here and that guess you look at this guy he's back and that's one of the things you're excited about you look Ranger 18 touchdowns seven interceptions rush for over 60 yards per game he was ninth in the Sun Belt in rushing as a quarterback last year so first and 10 for the Panthers from the 24 as they go on offense for the first time this year and the handoff right up the middle big hole for Marcus Carroll and a first down run for Carol great to see that burst from that young man he's stepping into two running backs that have departed from last season he's going to shoulder most of the load this year and it looks like he's up to it 19 yd pickup on his first snap of the Season Granger goes to the air and completes out here to cradle and cradle gets dropped at the 50 picks up about seven on the play six or seven on the play jakas cradle they're expecting big things from him having to replace Jamari thrash you transferred to Louisville of course cradle has some experience coming from Central Florida Healthy at the start the season that's a big plus for Georgia State second down from the 50 Panthers moving quickly and moving well to start the season Granger on the keeper fakes the pitch picks up the first down at the 38 yd line and that's something you watch that's something you watch for because we talked about the added weight for him you wonder if that would take some away from his Mobility look just fine on that play Matt Trent mcnight the offensive coordinator said actually he got stronger he got faster so first and 10 play action Granger going for the Home Run throwing it out there caught by Lewis for a touchdown 38 yds it takes the Panthers less than 90 seconds to get on the board and that'll build your confidence they have an opening drive of the Season just like that one like clockwork for Georgia State here's another look you talked about Lewis having a Philly in the void the thrash gone now he's off to a great start new kicker for the Panthers this year Liam Rickman and his Pat is up and good so wow the Panthers go 7 6 yards and a buck 14 and a great early start for Georgia State here in 2023 as they bolt out to a s nothing lead on Rhode [Music] Island back in Atlanta Georgia State out to a 7even nothing lead Darren Granger Sam two of two 45 yds passing 38- yd touchdown pass and ran the ball once for 12 yds on that opening drive he's showing you everything that he does well and it's what the Georgia state offense wants to see plus this offensive line that has been retooled we're going to talk about that some as we go along as well but now we're going to see what the Rams can do to respond only one returning starter on that offensive line for the Panthers ball coming down in the end zone and the Panthers new kickoff Specialists Braden Alexander or rather Braden mallister puts it in the end zone and no no return so they'll bring the ball out to the 45 yd line or the 25 yd line that'd be something you're going to get things started from the top we talked about we talk about cassim Hill leading this offense but he's got a veteran offensive line he's got three guys that some people think could play at the next level so let's watch and see what they do for him close to 2600 yd passing last year 19 touchdowns seven interceptions and 235 plus yards per game a year ago Hill going to go to the air on the first play hit from behind and the ball is out scooped up by the Panthers and that's going to be into the end zone we'll see if they score that a touchdown 23 yds on the return as Cody Jones the star backer scooped it up and this game this play is going to go under review ring fi the th was moving forward it's an incomplete pass so the ruling on the field is incomplete pass wow yeah I think so his arm was going forward but it will be under [Music] review one other thing about Georgia state's defensive front you wanted to see if they going to get some be able to bring bring pressure on quarterbacks and you saw it right away from the very beginning there so an incomplete pass score remains 7 nothing and it's going to be second down and [Applause] 10 Hill pressure again fires it's complete up to the 35 yd line Summers with the catch their leading receiver top returning leading receiver here's another look at see if his arm isn't going forward yeah and his arm might have been going forward cuz he was hit from behind it was knocked forward still that's how it looked to me yeah so going to be third down and one both the tight ends in motion flip-flop to the other side of the [Applause] line handoff goes to the 35 yd line first down pick up by Gabe SLO one of the guys in know the stop for Georgia State right there you're going to watch a lot this year it's Justin Abraham he and Jordan vinel johnrey Hunter experienced linebacker core probably the most experienced unit uh section of this defensive unit yeah interesting thing about johnrey Hunter they move him from the outside to the inside backer position he put on some weight too but it's probably the position he's going to get a shot at professionally fake a hand off to Glo overthrows his Target John Irby in the middle of the field brings up second down and 10 same as we take a look at your impact players when the Rams have the ball and look ATO Summers he's preseason allconference selection at wide receiver we watch out for him and Jordan vinzel the same for Georgia State hit man for them on defense Summers had 42 catches a year ago handoff goes to the running back and that's going to be about a 6-y pickup for Gab Sloat they're replacing their star running back from a year ago Marcus the shields who ran for close to 1,200 yards a one-year transfer from St Francis 17 Shamar McCollum was in on the on the stop that's another experience a veteran this defensive unit for Georgia State now it's third down third down and four line to gain is the 45 [Applause] pass is complete in stride caught by Summers still on his feet having trouble getting him on the ground all the way down to the 20 yd line catero Summers with a big catch and run for the Rams goes for 39 yds Big Catch by the preseason all Colonial selection but it's what he does after the game The Yards after the catch dragging a rece receiver that's BR Brown there with him and then Jaylen Tate two of the experience veterans from the Georgia state secondary before they could finally get him down to the ground big body wide receiver with a great catch radius 63 213 and a grad student so first and 10 for the Rams from the 19 fake a hand off to SLO heill going to run it this time and slide down at the 15 yd line I think they're going to put the slide at about the 17 this will be a three-yard pickup for Hill started his career at Maryland in 2017 came off the bench in his freshman season and led the terpens to a victory at Texas but after three games blew out his knee came back the next year played 10 games blew out his knee again again led the terpens to a win over the long [Applause] Wars second down SLO gets the ball SLO going to get cut down at the 12 yd line nice open field tackle that was jiah Johnson played corner for the Panthers a year ago they've moved him to the safety spot covering some ground was Johnson to make that stop Takes Over The first flag of the game that's going to go against the offense Marshall Lewis our referee working this season opener balart offense number 89 that's going to be on the tight end Brady roor off coach was in an interior Lin position with his s down and then picked up to move to the other position head coach Jim fling down in his 10th season 31 and 62 his record but they've been much better 24 and 24 since 2018 he has done quite a job with this program still wants more yeah seven and four historically would be an outstanding season for Rhode Island he said look we're our that's not our goal we want to get in the FCS playoffs thought they had a shot last year came up a little bit short pass is thrown complete at the 11 yd line Darius Savage second leading returning receiver with the catch now it's going to be fourth down let's see if they kick a field goal here Gavin Pringle there on on stop transferred in from buckna Georgia State team so they're going to bring their kicker freshman Ty gr onto the field Devin Walter the punter is the holder it's a 28 yd kick Donado chanti is the Snapper and a flag as the ball goes through the uprights they were barely beating the play clock there upright and Rhode Island after driving driving down the field comes up empty man for a nice drive down the field you had those penalties and then this oh man it was hooking back in just didn't get enough hook it was outside the uprights and then at the last moment started to hook back in actually had he been further out it might have hooked in enough for him he was maybe Too Close For The Hook 10pl 59 yd Drive comes up empty for the Rams and the Panthers go back on off offense from the 20yd [Applause] line play action whips it out here to cradle and cradle up to the 25 yd line Braden price the quarterback making the tackle for the [Applause] Rams Panthers playing with Tempo snapping quickly again hand off goes to Carol he gets wrapped up right there at the line of scrimmage by Malachi BBY bring up third down and short Marcus Carroll stepping into the big shoes as you alluded Sam of Tucker Greg and Chamas Williams Granger sprinting to his right and throwing that's a first down catch up to the 37 yd line Robert Lewis's second catch of the game Lewis with the catch Dean Williams in on the stop his D played in this building yeah he did yeah he did Mitch Williams the famous Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher actually you know what I don't know whether he played in this building or not the Phillies beat the Braves in the 1993 NLCS but that was in the old building so I don't know whether Mitch was still in the game when the Braves moved in here in 1997 97 so second down behind the sticks now for the Panthers pass out here to Lewis third catch of this first quarter for Lewis and he's up to the 43 yd line price making the tackle and it's going to be third down Robert Lewis six touchdown catches in his first seven games a year ago but but then missed four of his last five games with injury keeping him healthy will be important for the Panthers this year Granger out of an empty set sprinting and throwing and that's a first down catch across the 50 yd line for Georgia State he drew him offside flag his first catch of the game they're going to decline the penalty offside Defense number eight in the neutral zone at the snap penalties declin ZTA plays the first down so same here in the first quarter the Panthers and Granger have distributed the ball to all three of the first team wide receivers Lewis three catches cradle has two catches Williams has a catch and so far the offensive line is looking good gives Granger time going for the Home Run going for cradle contact and we got a flag out on price at the nyd line let's see if this is going to be offensive or defensive pass interference it's going to go against the defense Braden price was white there R him stride for stride like he had his hands on him Defense number 26 15 yd penalty automatic first [Applause] down I'm looking at the time that Granger has like I said I'm watching this offensive line this reconfigured offensive line for Georgia State they've been able to run successfully the pass blocking for him has looked good so far Ranger is 6 for six with that time 79 yards the only returning starter for the Panthers is at left tackle the super senior number 52 Travis Glover they lost two starters on the offensive line to the transfer portal Jakari Carter now in the game he goes in motion Carroll gets the hand off he crashes down to the 24 yd line picks up seven on the play I came to the spring game and I saw Carol and he looked a little bit bigger to me you talk about guys who gained some weight he figured he's going to have the buck of the carries this year so he got prepared for it 510 210 senior rushed for over 600 yards as the number three back for most of the season in this Panthers offense going to be close to the first down with that carry right there 14th in the sun Bel conference but he really came on strong for Georgia State late in the season especially after jamas Williams got hurt and this season was ended prematurely hand off to Carol again no Granger is going to keep it and Granger lunges forward to the 21 and he is close to the first down that was Evan Stewart their top returning tackler making the stop but he gets the first down first and 10 for the Panthers well coach ly loves to talk about Evan Stewart and what he can do the way plays the game he evoked the name of Dick buus when he talked about this guy I'm like whoa he's a transfer from Boston College Jakari Carter gets the sweep Carter inside the 15 and driven Out of Bounds at the 14 yd Line Jordan Colbert making the tackle going to bring up third down and about three Panthers already rolled up seven first downs here in the the first quarter and 120 yds of total [Applause] offense Carol gets the handoff right up the middle runs into his own man and knocks off the helmet Travis Glover he'll have to come out of the game Carol ran right into his big left tackle he's making his 46th career start today 67 Bing Chuck WMA goes in for him and he's a story yeah Carol didn't knock off his Helman I think the defender knocked it off yes and you're right shukuma is a big story for the Panthers Carroll right up the middle again spins down inside the one yd line and down inside the one right back to the line of scrimmage is the Panthers play with Tempo here second down and goal and Carol skips into the end zone for the touchdown scored six touchdowns a year ago that's his first year in 2023 and the Panthers have a 13 to nothing lead great running by Carol to finish off that drive hard running inside BS his line there right behind 76 Jonathan Brown 65 Avery Reese who steps into the void at Center for Malik Sumpter all all conference we've been here seemed like forever and so Avery ree is stepping in there at Center 12pl drives so the Panthers showing their versatility first drive was quick four plays 76 yards this one's different it's more methodical 12 plays 80 yards close to 5 minutes Panthers on top 14 to nothing here in Atlanta and off to a great start in 2023 [Music] 5 scoring drive 12 plays 80 yards nearly 5 minutes Marcus Carroll six carries 26 of the 80 yards on that drive and saying he's got a chance to have a really big season he could be a top five rusher in the Sun Belt the way they're going to use him this year he's on the do Walker watch list but a lot of people he's kind of still flying below the radar because he wasn't out front last season I think he's going to get on some people's radar real quick he keeps running the way he's doing starting tonight just another and a long line of really good running backs you know the Panthers love to run the ball with their head coach Shawn Elliot former offensive lineman he likes to grind it same time man he's got an offense here with Trent Mite as his OC they can open it up and throw it too you've seen that already here in the first quarter like I alluded to you've seen the versatility they could be they beat you over the top on the first touchdown they kind of grinded you into the ground on the second touch and I spent some time with the new Center uh Avery Reese and he says you know what there was word out last season that we weren't the best offensive line in the Sun Belt so we got a little chip on our shoulder this year we don't care if we never throw the ball I wanted to run it every every play well as you alluded to ree is the guy that was promoted from backup to replace Malik Sumpter at that Center position this year so first and 10 as the Rams go back on offense they're down two scores settled for a field goal attempt on their opening drive and missed it first Carry of the game for for Jaden Griffin and he gets stopped at the line of scrimmage heard a lot of talk about Dennis and what we expect from him up front Georgia State in on that play I think that's going to be the big question mark for the Rams is what do they have in the running game they brought in some new guys Sloat and Griffin we've seen so far those were guys that were in the program Hill steps up and throws it out of bounds I mean he really threw it out of bounds heads up play by Hill as we mentioned started his career Maryland had injury problems there was controversy in the program you might remember head coach got fired transferred out went to Tennessee was with the volunteers for a year never got on the field in 2020 he transferred to the Rams he's found a home here for sure he's got a chance to go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks in program history third down and and 10 from the 25 Rush is coming at him hard he steps up in the pocket and throws underneath the SLO first down and more for SLO up to the 44 yd line good catch and run by Gabe SLO 19 yd pickup that's what you watch for against the quarterback like cassim Hill like you say his versatility and things that he can do finds that receiver just looking for who's open right there and gets it to slow to has a nice run after the catch that's a time take time let's see if a timeout has been called here first charge timeout Georgia State Timeout on the field so the Panthers burn their first timeout 316 to play in the quarter Georgia State leading cassim Hill third all time in Rams passing 39 passing touchdowns that's third all time in program history 3 63 passes completed he's fifth there and now he's just 16 yards away from being third all time in total offense should get that very soon if not on this play going to take a sack however back at the 34 yd line Panthers have done a really good job of putting pressure on cassim Hill that's Kevin swin number nine the transfer from Clemson who starred at Carolton high school started his career in the ACC has come home to finish fin you figured he was going to come out to be one of those impact guys there you see him in there along with number 10 Henry Bryant recording the sack Henry Bryant another guy who transferred in from the ACC he was at Louisville so a big loss second down and 19 on the play 32 total newcomers and 19 4-year transfers for the Panthers right up the middle Hill takes a shot in the middle of the field at the 49 Y Line gets a lot of it back going to bring up third down and medium 14 yd pickup that play that's number seven getting the Run wow that was Baris Brown on the tackle nearly some head-to-head contact right there that was Devin frell in on that play coach told us that we we would see him some tonight yeah Devin frell the young man from Milton high school started his career at Virginia [Applause] Tech pass is caught by summers at the 40 that's a first down and down to the 35 man you talk about catch radius that was UND display with that play you just throw it up there you get the elevator go there and bring it down very forgiving Target and he moves the chains yeah 16 yard pickup Sam I like what I've seen from cero Summers he's now got three catches over 60 yards and cassim Hill with that pass right there goes third time third now all time in Rhode Island history in total offense pass complete out on the edge and that Summers again with his fourth catch of the quarter good looking Prospect he was under recruited coming out of Coatsville Pennsylvania High School signed with St Francis I think this young man's got a future second down hill throws low was it caught by Irby ruled incomplete at the 24 ring on the fields an incomplete pass third down he just threw that one too low and bounced it and Irby the intended target young man battling back he missed two full seasons because of injury 2020 2021 ninth play of the drive coming up for the rigns remember though FCS they did not play at all in 2020 The Fall season was wiped out they came back and played a truncated schedule in the spring of 2021 that counted as the 2020 [Applause] season third down hill firing in the middle and it is caught by Savage and that'll be a first down at the 16 yd line 13 yd pickup Sam he'll knows how to find an open receiver he does and he has some talented receivers and Savage is wanted to transfer it in from Old Dominion and he moves to six again this is another drive that they've gotten there now let's see what they do when they get down in this area remember they had those penalties last time and then they missed a field goal attempt first and 10 final minute of the first quarter Savage gets dropped at the 18 yd line they're going to spot the original line of scrimmage as his forward progress but Jaylen Tate who steps up becomes a starter at safety this year made the [Music] tackle that might have been the final play of the quarter let's see if they try to get off a snap here as the clock is now at 10 seconds they don't seem like they're in any hurry that's going to be the end of the quarter that's the end of the first quarter so the Panthers with a big first quarter they roll up 141 yards eight first downs score on both of their possessions a quick drive a methodical Drive 14 nothing lead for Georgia State but Rhode Island trying to score for the first time they'll have the ball at the 16 when we get back to the start of 2nd Quarter the second alltime meeting Panthers beat the Rams 21-7 actually it was 41 to7 in 2012 at Rhode Island the only season the Panthers played in the colonial which is an FCS and the Panthers moved to the Sun Belt in 2013 where they have been ever since so second down and 10 and movement up front the right tackle with the infraction that's going to be Lorenzo Thompson I think no actually that's going to be Brock Bea at the bottom of that graphic we just saw we me we mentioned the Ferman game in 2019 that was the game they played after the big win at Tennessee and Darren Granger who was at Ferman at the time threw for over 300 yards in that game and Georgia state had to survive for a 4842 win yeah next year he here playing for Georgia state that leads to an interesting conversation we'll get to as the night goes on so penalty called on the Rams so second down now and long SLO gets the hand off and slow bangs off a couple of Defenders and reaches the 20yd line so I asked that of course in this day and age of the transfer portal and the free agency of movement of so many players I asked coach Elliot do you bookmark players are you watching a game and you know do you notice players and put it in the back of your mind if this guy ever comes up in the transfer portal this is somebody I want to take a look at he said yes it's just kind of the nature of the Beast you kind of have to now [Music] yeah Hill hands in the pocket and fires and it is caught in the end zone for a touchdown super catch in traffic by John urby 20yd touchdown reception and the Rams are on the board and that was he'll sh what you can do what he can do if you give him some time got good protection there and he rifled that one in I mean there's no doubt that cassim Hill can lead teams to big victories he's done it many times in his career before he got to Rhode Island and since he got to Rhode Island and as we were talking to coach fliming just the other day I said look you got a quarterback you got a chance that's the name of the game in college football in the NFL too if you got a quarterback you got a chance in every game Pat is Up and Good by grth and it's 14-7 so the Rams answer back Big Catch by Herby In The End Zone Rhode Island cuts it to 147 RH Island 14-7 match stood along with Sam praw opening minute of the second quarter and a 12pl 75 yd drive by Rhode Island covered 5 minutes and Hill was 5 of six for 74 yd on that drive Matt say what you will um I don't know if there's concerned with Georgia State defensively but the Rams have shown they can mount drives of good distance and chew up some time on the clock the early one didn't pay off that one did yeah I think the early returns are that the Rams are going to have trouble running the ball on the Panthers but so far they've been able to pass the ball on the Panthers as long as they can keep the heat off of Hill he's got a chance and the Panthers going to have a hard time with him return by Lewis up to the 32 yd line that's where the Panthers go on offense they've scored on both of their possessions this will be their first of the second quarter 21 yd return by Lewis kickoff returns a rarity with Georgia state in the past we're seeing them tonight well with the fair catch rules and you get the ball at the 25 yard line it becomes a strategic decision here where the ball comes down do you return it or you just take the ball at the 25 25 is great starting field position most teams will settle for that Panthers get a little bit better on the return by Lewis they'll start at the 33 is where they put it down Rangers seven for seven so far 86 yards Carol got hit in the back field bounced off that man and Falls forward to the 43 close to a 10yd pickup for Carol showing great balance on that play he's just showing how he's running the football and like I said the thing he just prepared himself so well for for this season Breaking some tackles there niney pickups what they call it Granger scrambling to his right being chased as he throws that's a first down catch to Carol First Catch out of the backfield for Carol you can expect a lot more than that coming up this season had five catches out of the back field last year Trent mcnight said he kind of envisions this season perhaps unfolding like it did in 2019 when Trey Barnett at the time became the go-to back and had the bulk of the carries catch made by Lewis LS with his fourth catch of the game second down and five line to gain is the 43 Williams in motion KZ Adams in the game for the first time gets his first Carry struggles to get back to the line of scrimmage M Makai bethl making the tackle for the Rams Adams brings a little something different can make you miss those type running backs a little change of pace for Georgia State offensively when he comes into the game third down and six ball at the 49 and backfield set now we have encroachment I believe on the Rams and a free play for the Panthers and the ball was caught at the 45 yd line by Tek Williams they're probably going to take the penalty right here Defense number 35 5yd penalty repeat third down coach Shawn Elliot he was really satisfied with preseason practice thought it was one of the best that he's been through and starts his seventh season as the Panthers head coach he said they never hit that monotony level usually in preseason practice couple of weeks in you start to get hit that monotony level they got so many new players battling for spots on this starting lineup and in the depth chart that uh stayed pretty Lively the entire summer Marcus Carroll gets wrapped up did pick up the first down [Music] however eight AJ paa in on the [Music] stop going for the Home Run William streaks open and caught for the touchdown High leak Williams 42 [Applause] yds as Darren Granger dropped it in a bucket it's 20 to7 once again when you're going to give Darren Granger that kind of time the offensive line did it once again on this play gave him plenty of time to find his receiver and he just hung it out there and let Williams go and get it well sea Elliot told us that Granger in Pre season practice has been precise on his assignments and deliveries you can't be any more precise then 10 for 10 to start the [Applause] game wow what a start to the season for Darren Granger Rickman on for the Pat and he's splits the upright 217 Panthers have scored every time they've touched the ball two big touchdown passes by Grangers so far in this game 38 yds to Lewis and 42 to Williams two [Music] t wonderful start to the season for Darren Granger he came in starting the season fourth MO in program history in passing yards closing in on Nick Arbuckle's program record led the team in rushing last year his third season is the Panthers starting quarterback even named to the watch list for Maxwell and Manning Awards certainly deserves it he's really worked hard in his time here he's 10 for 10 to start this game for 38 yds I believe or thereabouts is close to that 3 for3 52 yards on that last Drive ball coming down in the end zone Rams will take a knee and bring it out to the 25 so 21-7 lead Ranger on the horn upstairs to Trent mcnight the offensive coordinator from the top we talked about two veteran quarterbacks and they have been having an impact in this game oh they've been great and Hills 9 for 13 for 127 in a touchdown so both of the veteran quarterbacks have not disappointed here today B making his 15th consecutive start five years he's been the starting quarterback pass thrown complete to Summers going to cut inside and look for a running Lane and go down at the 32 33 yd line they'll spot the 32 that'll be a seven ydd pickup it's that man again yeah he's got five catches he's approaching 100 yds here in the first half they lost all conference wide receiver Ed Lee their top receiver from a year ago he signed with the Patriots in the off season was cut earlier this month second down play action pocket for Hill going for the Run he's got two guys in the same area code I mean literally Irby and Savage were running side by side down the field the road Island offensive line gave Hill time just hung it out there too far that offensive line anchored by number 75 you see him right there the Right Guard Nick kareah making his 38th straight start tonight First Team all conference and a third team allamerican at the end of last season got the same kind of preseason honors this year so third down and three Hill heavy Rush steps up to avoid it going to try to run for the sticks and get there he does head play by cassim Hill that's what you expecting that veteran quarterback he he's he's going to take what you give him reverse angle shot right here first yep first and 10 for the Rams ball at the 41 yd line if you're wondering how he became a seventh year quarterback he had catastrophic knee injuries his first two years of college 2017 and 2018 at Maryland he was on the fast track to be a great power five quarterback Big Run for the Iowa State transfer
