if you want to jot them down you can also go through our YouTube channel and do the same and we'll get someone over in the uh Studio to check that one out we'll get those questions or comments to Blake Harold defensive coordinator for East Carolina week zero of the college football season is in the books kind of a weird name for for a week in college football there weren't that many games and they call it week zero but were were some surprises how about Georgia Tech I just saw the highlights right there Georgia Tech I mean Florida state was a double digit favorite top 10 football team and Georgia Tech came out and and put it on them point game to watch of course the game we were all interested in on week zero was Nor State's match nor State played in the m swack challenge in Atlanta playing Florida A&M Florida A&M was a big double digit favorite in that game right top 25 team top 25 opponent then North Folk State drop jumps out to an early lead and uh looked like they controlled most the first half they did they were up 14 nothing at one point and then if you didn't follow the game uh came down to the fourth quarter they were down a touchdown they score a touchdown they go for the extra point it gets blocked but there's a penalty uh Florida was off sides so then Nori State comes up from the one yard line decides to go for two and they get stuffed apparently and they didn't get the two and then Florida A&M ran out 6 minutes o clock which is really you don't hear that very often no that's a long a long four minute drill there so that's uh really nice job by FAMU at the end of the game to close it out 2423 was the final North State comes to town at 0 And1 East Carolina of course in their opener uh yet to play a game they always say coach that teams make the most improvement from week one to week two if that's the case that's good news for norick state right and and but but then again you know you guys have tape on norick state where they don't really have anything right now on you guys for this year I think for them it's they've got all the game one kind of jitters out they got the G iron the wrinkles out from game one I mean we're going to see a totally different football team than we saw on film Saturday night it's an FCS opponent now obviously the Pirates will be big favorites but as we've seen in Greenville at East Carolina he can't take anyone you know for granted James Madison came to town one year led by Mike Houston and put it to East Carolina so you never know what's going to happen you put the footballs out there no no doubt I told our players I've been on the other side of this thing when I was at the cadel we went to South Carolina beat South Carolina went to Alabama was 10 to 10 and a half so this is a big game for them they've had Circle for a while and and it's got to be our biggest game of the year too because it's our next game can you tell when you're telling your team things like that that that they're buying it or they're not buying it or does it have to be game day and you find out whether they bought it or not no I I think our young our young men are fired up and excited to play you can just tell that they're ready for a football game it doesn't matter who it against right now but they're locked and loaded and you can tell everything you say and everything you're talking about is processed and it's going to memory and boom you can see it on the practice field going to work and you think back to last year which was just you know a horrendous year on the football field two and 10 everybody you know upset with that coach Houston you know it's not the standard obviously and everybody trying to that's what we named our preview show that we're going to have Thursday on Channel 9 we called it bouncing back a 2024 East Carolina preview and that's really the thing this whole you know whole year has been since since the end of the last game has been we got to bounce back we got to come back we got to make this thing right no question close that chapter of the book let's move on let's get things fixed let's let's be better you know in so many areas that we can be and and uh 24 is a obviously a new season new excitement fans are are fired up we you know our players are excited about what's ahead and to make sure never a repeat of 23 happens again and it's a great sign we were talking about before we went on the air that there's so much excitement around and really and it's true you don't hear a lot of people saying well they were only two and 10 last year what do you expect this year it's like you walk around town and say Hey you know they got a chance to be pretty good this year they made some big changes you know the defense was good last year if the Pirates had any kind of offense last season Pirates would have been you know at least 500 I think most of us feel like but you know they got a new offense John David Baker comes in he he runs a fast tempo I think a lot of us are looking forward to seeing it because I've always been a a proponent that hey when you go to a scrimmage I mean I mean you don't know what you're looking at you don't know who's out there you just can't really tell a whole lot and and you really don't want your offense to go out there and just Blitz through the defense because that'd be bad for you coach yeah it would be a bad day but yeah I think anytime you you come to scrimmage and you're there for a few of those that you're not really seeing what what you may see game one um one you may be holding something back uh you may not be playing certain kids or like we've been going against either each other for 10 15 20 practices against the same offense or same defense so they kind of each other's calls and what to expect how is that fast offense going to help you guys when you get in in the field of battle coming up yeah I I think anytime we can jump up on people and and get a lead I think you know playing defense becomes easier and that's what I think we can you know do with this offense and you know I think from the other side of the ball you know anytime you're preparing for somebody and there kind of like the every offense you see every week is kind of easy now all of a sudden you got to prepare for a fastpac fast tempo team you think you can be prepared but until you get to the game you don't know right and I think that's where teams are going to struggle with this is kind of an odd situation because during the season you know you play your game so you're looking at tape from your own game to try to fix things and you're looking at the opponent to try to prepare for them this week you're looking at just what nuli state put on the field how much did you guys watch it as a staff live or did you just wait for the the tape and and all that stuff Sunday hey I think everybody watched it live from their own home okay you know I didn't make it to the end that's past my bedtime it was past mine too I can tell that but yeah I know everybody was watching it players in the group chat texting back and forth about those things and obviously uh Sunday we get the the TV copy and the the the coaches copy of it and and kind of break it down but before you know they they have a new offensive coordinator they came from alorn state so we're trying to piece together what exactly he's going to be his identity is um they got two really good tailbacks in North Folk state two really good tight ends he didn't have that piece of Alcorn State so we knew there would be some differences we didn't know exactly what to expect right and I think we'll see some a different type of offense this Saturday than we saw last Saturday from them as well some different tweaks they lost their starting quarterback he was suspended before the season Jaylen Daniels came in he was seven of nine for 142 yards the real key for Nori State on Saturday it looked like to me it was just they ran the football so well yeah I think they only had four runs less than three yards everything else was you know I think they ran for over 200 in the first half uh the tailbacks 13 did a really nice job staying between the tackles getting North with so they're scary in Run game it's either Kevin or Kon King had 146 yards spelled Kev he had 146 yards he's from Oscar Smith from the towood area so he's a kid that's a local kid near Nori State and he averaged 10.4 yards per attempt he's a kid last year you saw him always bouncing it but the other night he's hitting it vertical and he outruns the whole secondary from uh FAMU man I tell you he uh he looked good that's for sure and if they run the football like that that's that's one of the keys if if you can obviously that's what we talk about with offense all the time if you can run the football you're going to have success and that's what you know that's what your defense is designed to stop the run and then everything goes from there and the same thing nor State's going to try to run yeah I think you know we we want to make sure we stop everything not just the Run that's true I agree but yeah that's I think that's where it starts is try to make a team play left-handed and that's what we'll try to do with Northfolk State yeah and and when you when you think about you know the FCS and FBS and the differences there uh is is the main difference after the first team I mean a lot of a lot of coaches have told me in the past that you know the first stringers you know there's a lot of similarities as far as Talent weight height but it's where you go in the depth department is where you find the big difference yeah you you hop especially defensively we've been able to build some depth over the years you know B people we played in the game and rotated throughout a game so you hope that that kicks in and we're able to you know hey play 20 25 guys and that depth kind of kicks has an issue especially in the Greenville heat yeah you talk about depth I mean you got guys kind of rotating in and out all the time as long as you can keep fresh bodies in there that's the idea that's always been important to us like Hey we're going to win the game in the second half you know we're going to we're going to wear them down wear them out we're going to always have fresh bodies out there um and guys who who you know ready play full speed in the fourth quarter when the other team's kind of dragging a little bit we're going to talk about the Personnel for this pirate football team on defense coming up with Blake Harrell in just a minute once again we'll take your questions your comments that kind of thing on our Facebook live page uh Kenny was checking in and wanted to know about Nori State and if you had a chance to watch that game on Saturday night you know you know you look at at a game like that a week zero opponent we were supposed to have a week Zero game the co year right against Marshall my first year here yeah yeah it's hard to believe you've been here five years by yeah no doubt it's been been a good five years yeah we were supposed to play Marshall that was going to be the 50th year yeah and obviously Co pushed that and cancel it back so instead of opening with Marshall for my first game I got to open UCF who was a Tempo team were now so they were and I remember going through that preseason camp and we did everything we could to prepare for that Tempo and be ready and still got in the game and there was no way to simulate it just you can't simulate that type of speed that's exactly right Blake Harrell Our Guest live in the studio we'll take a commercial break right now we'll come back we'll talk about that Personnel for the pirate defense back with more on the Brian Bailey show it's game week in East Pirates you dare to walk the plank M stop it you're killing me Pirate Radio the voice of the pirate Nation we'll take you to the edge you're listening to the Brian Bailey show powered by Greenville Utilities Community owned Community powered now back to the show all right welcome back to our show on this Monday game week finally here for East Carolina's Pirates Blake Carrol defensive coordinator in in his fifth year at ECU is our guest live in the studio again we're taking your questions or comments on our Facebook live page just jot them down we'll get them to coach Harold and we will talk about what you want to talk about as far as the upcoming game is concerned when you look at at the strength of this pirate defense and we've talked about it pretty much all summer but but really you got to like the interior lineman because that was a point of concern when you got here and even when coach Houston got here the year before you know everybody knew hey we got to get some bigger guys in here we got to get some you know some depth we got to get that defensive line and and the old you know saying goes that that line you know defense wins championships but lineman you know basically no doubt think both sides of the ball I remember when I got here in 2020 we were watching the 2019 film it was like the same four guys were on the field all the time like well when did y'all play the backups like how did y'all rotate like well we didn't that's all we had and uh right now you'll see us play 10 12 guys I mean we got some guys that played up front we've added a few pieces so feel really good about that front crew it's like a hockey hockey game up there you sending those new uh yeah line change some of it is to keep those guys fresh some of it you know is a strategy just to slow the offense down a little bit maybe we have a time to adjust maybe a play call uh you know if Coach T sending a d tackle in and rotate as he comes out you get to kind of see a picture of what the offense is looking to do looking to run so maybe puts us in a better call too yeah I tell you it's all the chess pieces that go into everything that that goes into to what happens on the field that's supposed to be a point of emphasis year that the the D linan can't take as long to get off the field really so we'll we'll see if that holds true yeah we'll see how they see how they they manage that thing there's so much that goes on I don't know how you tell a 300lb kid to hurry up and get off the field yeah when you think about some of those guys on the line talk about just what what their strengths are and and maybe maybe even the personalities that they have oh man you know because they have some personalities on that line I think when I start we start big Tay yeah Deontay Johnson is uh drives a big big truck you know souped up and big tires on loves to go fish hunt those type of things and Big T he's going in his fifth year and he Virginia and our nose guard and obviously All Conference last year but uh just the way he kind of the presence he has in that defensive room and defensive uh unit and just the energy that he brings to practice I mean you've seen him out there just does a really nice job with that Elijah Morris is the the story we all know oh yeah who's a starter Forest returning fifth year kid and just always has a nose for the football and when you're alignment and that happen that's a good thing it always ends up in his hands and that's a good thing for sure uh you know Su rad wear same same approach fifth year kid yeah CJ Ms a local guy from down the road uh will be up front for us and it's has a really good fall Camp really good and then interiorly we added Jaden McKenzie from Raleigh Ohio State transfer six-year kid so add wow some more experience there in that room than it was already experienced so really excited about that interior group you mentioned sixth year can you imagine a scenario that we're in right now with Nils and with you know if if when you came here five years ago could you ever imagine that now we're in a scenario where you're thinking about getting kids in for one year and Nils and people transferring all over the place the college landscape has changed a ton like people said that 5 years ago like n that's illegal that's that's SMU back in the day no doubt exactly no doubt but it's uh it's crazy that how much it's changed and how how you have to go through everything and I don't know how in the world you it's like every year is going to be you know you really can't develop players because every year is changing man you can develop some some will stick around but it's more like you know you got to worry about the people that you're losing and you got to be worried about you know trying to keep people and trying to get people and hey we just worry about what's important now yeah that's right now now you ain't got to worry about any what's important now take care take care of business right now and and we'll worry about the other stuff later and I think like if you truly treat people the right way you build a relationship love them up and do things the right way I think you'll have a good chance to keep that that core piece together I was going to say that it it looks like to me that the most important part of the coaching game right now with the assistant coaches because it's more the assistance than it is the head coach because the head coach has all this whole thing to do the assistant coaches you have to develop a trust yeah and and it's got to be almost like a tough love too because you got to get on kids you want to get the best out of them but they got to realize at the end of the day and those big linemen I think they realize it you know coach over there is is loving them but you know getting on their butts but it's just it's just a fine line you have to walk to do that no doubt and it's no you know probably no different than parenting probably different than every other job somebody wants to feel appreciated they want to feel loved they want you to you know help them grow and be a better player in our case uh so I think it takes all that and that's you know a big part of our defensive success has really retention but it seemed like you know in the past if if I'm upset the coaches yelled at me and I didn't get to play I can Suk and then you know but if I want to transfer there's a penalty that goes along with it and now there's no penalty there's no penalty and we tell kids all the time like hey when you walk in the door you got to leave your ego you know we're going to have red dots Green Dots that's not picking on you it's nobody's pointing you out we just all trying to create teachable moments so we can all grow right that's that's a great way to look at it that's why we have you on the show you can teach us all this stuff you ought to do a life class and have everybody come in and just teach us about life well I think sometimes you've been through you know experiences that didn't turn out that way and it helps you grow as a coach and and we got to grow as individuals and hey the college landscape is going to change yeah so it's going to keep changing yeah it is and I don't want to coach the same way I did 10 years ago because hey the players going to change the landscape's going to change the game's going to change so we need to evolve each and every year somebody wrote in about Julius wood we were talking about that too because I'm a big Cowboy fan but hoping that he makes is it Tuesday I think the rosters have to be reduced by Tuesday this week that sounds about right and he's right on the cusp of trying to make that Squad he was we had a chance to talk to we were down in Arlington uh for the American Media day with the coaches and he came over to visit with Coach Houston and some of the guys Raj and some of the guys and he was excited he said I got a chance to make this team and he's had at least two picks that I've seen and he's had some you know tfl tackles for losses and I think they're impressed with him yeah he's doing the same thing that we saw him do here in dowy F you know going and getting the ball going make plays behind the line of scrimmage and and just flying around and super excited for him I think he's got a bright future that'd be great he was really really he was SM sming he was really excited Julius is always smiling yeah I miss those kids Julius JM you know those are really good players for us and I'm excited about what they're doing on Sundays and representing pirate nation and and that's got to be very rewarding when you get a chance to see guys like that I mean you know you know you worked with them and and they understand that you were a part of their success and the coaches that you have under you are part of their success and and their future and some of these guys can make you know really good money in the NFL I always say what makes good coaches a good players yeah so you're right about that Blake Harold defensive coordinator at East Carolina is our guest game week at East Carolina Pirates and norick state coming up at 6 o'clock on Saturday when you wake up on Saturday morning is that the longest day in the world wake up night games are long I always get asked what time do you want to play I said let's kick it off at 11:00 a.m. yes exactly let's get up and get it rolling I don't think that would be uh TV wouldn't like it that yeah TV may not like it pirate Nation Tailgators may not like it may not get tailgate as long um but you know I think at the same time dowy fckin is a special place at night yeah you know you you really get two workouts in during the day just kind of kill a little time I might give my little 5K and a little you know a few curls in or something kind of kill some time but um you know it's it's really kind of a a long day just kind of waiting around for the event but once the event gets there boom it goes like just like that and I've said that a number of times but it's the worst part of even when you go on the road for those Thursday night games on the road for a Thursday night game is the worst you you travel Wednesday that's the longest you get up on Thursday morning and it's like you know I remember last year we were somewhere and Brian midor got up and he says he says turn to game day and I'm like it's Thursday we gota we gota watch prices right yeah the six o'clock game at home is not that bad you still got game day do all these things but you're exacted right a Thursday night Road game or a Friday night BYU especially the time changes too oh that was tough too then it really is past my bedtime yeah that was that was different but that was that was a lot of fun look at the schedule and and there are people out there that you know say it's a week schedule but when you look at it you know with Liberty is really going to be a difficult Old Dominion on the road is not going to be a piece of cake I mean and the conference UTSA is one of the picks to win it and they come to Daddy Pickin for the first American game so you know I think you got to give this thing a chance yeah every single week we're going to have our hands full we got to go play our best football every single week we can't worry about hey who was on our schedule we just got to worry about North Folk state right now and after that we worry about the next opponent but um you know you got to go play your best football and worry about you I think we had Shep come talk to the team yesterday and one of the things I saw that coach Houston put that up there and one of the things he talked about was we're playing the Pirates every single week we got to go be the best version of the Pirates make sure the Pirates are executing playing at a high level high energy High effort physicality and do the things that we want to do in our culture to go win football games I had a coach one time say if you can't get up 11 times in a year then you just this is not for you there's no doubt and that you know that's what our young men are so excited about you talked about North Folk state or who the opponent was they're excited to go play football they haven't played football in 11 10 months what N9 months they're excited to get back out there and and show pirate Nation who they are and prove that hey last year was not us and get back to work and I still don't think fans understand really the work that goes into it I think what they think is everybody comes in out of shape in August and everybody kind of kind of works their way yeah kind of works their way into shape you know and then plays the game but it's there's so much more to it it all starts you know basically whenever you finish up one year you're getting into you know winter conditioning and what Big John does with this team and all that you know all the stuff that goes into it I think we went through our install maybe four or five times I guess maybe five you know just going back to last January the gas are guys in the office installed it then we installed as fulltime as coaches in February and then Spring ball and then twice again this summer and then fall Camp so I guess six yeah so there's a certainly a lot of work that goes into it on the field classroom weight room whatever it may be of course Monday is an off day now for pirate football you guys go back at it on Tuesday and Wednesday is your hard practices during the year and a normal week Thursday you kind of take a little bit of a break and then Friday you walk through Saturday you play the games that's still pretty much sleep that's that's very similar I mean Monday is the you know NCAA day off for our players academic day even academic day even though most of them will be studying the opponent you know trying to watch film do some things like that Tuesday is a tough day Tuesday tough man Tuesday Tuesday we're we're going to go at it you know and put the pads on pop around a little bit and basically kind of effort wise and simulate what we play in a game as as far as the number of efforts and mileage we run according to our vest Wednesday is still a workday Wednesday we'll get our our good work in and some field zones some some third Downs Thursday we're going to back off of them a little bit this year kind of be more of a mental day walk through day and then a fast Friday kind of get going through there and then in preparation for game day on Saturday and that long day on Saturday wake up and at 6:00 kickoff this is the Brian Bailey show we're talking with Blake harol fifth year e Carolina defensive coordinator we'll take another commercial break right now we're taking questions comments just get them the pirate Nation you're listening to the Brian Bailey show powered by Greenville Utilities community-owned utilities mean local control low rates and high reliability now back to the show all right welcome back to our show Blake harrold defensive coordinator in his fifth year getting set to uh start the new football season for East Carolina pirates in the Spartans of nori state to kick it off East Carolina then goes to Old Dominion comes back home for the appstate game and all of a sudden the football season will be off and running and it's it's funny because it seems like it's taking forever to get here and we say it all the time but once it hits I mean it is just it just goes every day you know exactly what what the plan is you have to do this this and this and get ready for the next game and take a look at the last game and it's uh it's really a rigid type schedule yeah you you fall in a routine for the next 14 weeks of hey Mondays is going to be this Tuesday's going to be this and everybody knows it you know it my wife knows it my kids my kids know it so uh but like you said as Z so long to get us point for these 14 weeks play these 12 games that you know so much rides on that you're super excited about it how hard is it as an assistant coach and a coordinator to to continue to coordinate the family and still you know be because you guys have to be away from them a lot yeah it's really my wife you know it she really becomes uh in some ways a single mom during football season I try to do a great job of being home being present and do being a really good dad I think that's like my number one goal in life is be a good dad uh but she does she she has you know take the kids to school go back to school shoing hey we got into softball practice volleyball practice and all these different things going on so she's a she's a true hero at home yeah it's one of those things too I mean you know the wash machine is not working can you come home and and and see what we can do and you just can't cuz you got well I wouldn't know what to do anyway me either you're right me either yeah my wife would know better how to fix that yeah I got a light bu change this summer that's right that's about where I'm at as far as that goes all right somebody else just wrote in want to know who the ball Hawk is on defense who's your ball Hawk this year man I I'm really excited about our defense really am and and we got to do a better job taking the ball away I think taking away of I think I read the other day 36 of 40 contest since I've been here but I think that's one of our main focuses right now and just going and getting the football and I think we're going to do it at more of a unit you know than than I see one guy doing it uh you know sioban Rebel he's working so hard about his ball figured out his name yet yeah I call him Siobhan V you know Savon what now it's saone he said that's what he told us I started calling Vine for sure that way I can't they can't jack it up um but he he's he's a ball player oh yeah and he had like 12 pbus last year I told him you catch half of those you're going to make a you know do pretty well so he he been working really hard on just ball drills and ball skills and we've been overemphasizing it this preseason and doing some different things and I think we got one or two surprises for our players and I think it's going to carry what our fans just for game day when we do get a a turnover oh we got something new yeah I haven't told the players yet so okay we'll keep it a surprise the next we'll keep it a surprise but we'll look forward to that and a lot of teams you you know you're talking I don't know what it is but some of the teams in the past have had like a chain put around and stuff like that so anything we can do and they'll really be excited about that yeah I mean anything we can do I think to promote you know positive behaviors with are turnovers that I think we need to do that you know some teams just just seem to be the teams that can do that kind of thing that can create turnovers and you've been around and some teams you know they may even be a pretty good defensive team they just don't create any turnovers and that's a big big key because you're not going to stop everybody all the time yeah and I'll tell you this the teams I've been around that had a lot of interceptions or something we had leads in those games when you're making teams drop back pass put the ball in Jeopardy try to make a play it becomes tough on offenses and and the favorite you know it plays out for the defense because the ball's in the air they're putting in Jeopardy versus hey it's a tight ball game they they can be very conservative about their play call and or they got the lead they don't have to put the ball in Jeopardy they can protect it because that's the only way they lose the game yeah so I'm really excited about that when you look at at the middle of your uh your defense with the linebacking core you know so important you know the interior line kind of to me kind of dictates how things go but that the linebacking core yeah you know is is so important to what you guys are trying to do I I think we got two kids there will start force on Saturday Mike Edwards and Zak bar who are going to be really good players you know Mike award started a bunch of games for us last year every game and played in a bunch of football as a Kai has played very little football um but just knock on wood if he'll continue to do what he's done in practice and spring game and preseason camp I think he's going to have a big year he just he does a really nice job of seeing the picture of the offense running the defense running the show and has a knack for the ball both of both of them do I think you know they may be the best pair of linebackers inside backers we've had for the Run game since St in here well me you talk about stopping the run you know as you said we got to stop everything but but but does the defense does it depend on each week who you're playing what the main concern of stopping is because some teams pass it so well some teams run it so well yeah no doubt we we're talking the other day about the RPO game and just how that's changed college football oh yeah you know sometimes run pass option yeah you want to take make sure you take care of of the the glances or the hitches or the actual pass option part of it and make them hand the football off and let them have two yards get second or it's third and six Now versus throwing throwing a pass out there for gains five or six yards so uh certainly that changes from week to week depending on your opponent is depending on who they have a receiver maybe there's a guy that you got to give extra attention to or who their quarterback is that kind of thing and the Blake heral defense you've got your linebacking core inside you've got your Edge rushers too to go along with those big guys up front talk a little bit about those guys and and how often do they back up as linebackers and how often do they go forward as yeah linemen so we will drop everybody at at some point in time nose guards tackles ends rushes I want see J when he gets the drop back he's probably excited he does a little bit but our two Edge guys you know to the field is um our field end and that's uh Chad Stevens right who's uh heard His Name a lot six year yeah you know going like you said earlier six-year kid there a lot of football under his wing and backed up by JD Lampley and and those guys will you know I should say backed up both of them in my mind are starters right you know and really good football players and JDs and there'll be times we're going to track try to have him on the field at the same time in certain packages jiah Robinson's playing field in who's played a little bit in the past for us and finally healthy and playing really good football right now in preseason and then our outside backer in the boundary where Jeremy Lewis was last year um we brought in rahee Craig from from Louisville who we recruited High School Alexander Central uh high school player from from North Carolina there in Hickory area and then Sam Danka so th those two are different in their own way so I think it allows us you know a when Sam's in there you may see a little bit of you know more maybe more odd front when raheem's in there may see a little bit more fourman front so uh they both bring strengths to us but uh really good pass rushers really you know around the football doing some good things there yeah and and when you you look at at what you want to do putting pressure on the quarterback you know the great teams the great defenses do it with three or four but but you still you're still going to Blitz some but if you can get pressure on that quarterback with three or four that helps everybody in the back end you know you never know about about game four or so what what your true identity is and what you your weaknesses are your strengths are but just going into preseason camp and even dating back to last uh last spring I think we have a better chance to rush the passer with four and not have to bring pressure to get to the queue than than we have in the past and that's got to be comforting you got to sleep like a like a baby when you got that going on that makes my job easier for sure you know when when you're trying to always think okay should we bring this pressure well if we bring this pressure then you know so so and so's singled up in coverage over there so how do we give him help and how do we bring pressure so it's kind of a chess game at that point but hey if you can get the Q quarterback and only bring three or four guys then then I think it definitely makes my job easier you touched on him a little bit but talk about your defensive backs back there what you what we're going to see back there yeah I think you know Corners you got Isaiah Brown Murray and sioban back yeah and Isaiah is playing with a lot of confidence right now he he's he's had a whole season under his belt and um he's going in his third year of football Siobhan's in his fifth year of football so two guys they older tyer Brown you know a third-year player uh Andrew Wilson lamp back there a third-year player tavius nass is playing some Corner in this preseason camp he's a fourthe player so a lot of experience there in at corner position so feel really good about that spot and then in safety uh Jordan Huff started a couple games for us last year Omar Rogers started a couple games for us last year so those are kind of our boundary safeties uh very athletic you know older kids fifth year players uh Devin King is really a fifth year player too and he played a lot of football for us last year didn't start but uh you know very athletic to the field and be that same position Julius wood played in last year you know when you think about all the experience that you have that's got to make you feel good too because you know you don't know what the young guys are going to do right until the lights actually come on there's no doubt and I said even a second-year player who hasn't really been battle tested right they're going through it for the first time I mean we have some very talented young linebackers DJ Johnson Julian Davis who I think are going to be really really good players one day but they're not quite battle tested now mid year hey they they they'll be experiened right right now you still got to hey make sure you're guiding them through this thing but you know defensively when you're playing with third fourth fifth sixth year players you feel really good yeah now we'll see a few young guys uh Jamari riddle is ones that come comes to mind he's a field safety from cam County Georgia true freshman but I think he he's exceptional athletically and uh just you know he makes all the checks back there doing things that you wouldn't expect a freshman to do so he's still a freshman but I think we'll see him early game one big difference in college football this year and we'll touch on that now you can communicate with players in their helmets now who who's going to have the communication helmet is it one one player we only get one but but he can he trade the helmet to somebody else if he comes out of the game what happens there we can we can he may take it off in the middle of the game if he gets tired of hearing too me so if you see that him take his helmet off it's not because he needs a new helmet it's because he's tired less than the coast hero uh but zakai zakai Barker would start out with it and all right so we have a rotation whether it's zakai day day well Mike Edwards Julian Davis so to always be a linebacker and obviously if the Kai's out of the game it's one of the other guys Mike or or DayDay do do all four players have the system ready to go they do can't activate it until you know you're the one well they have two helmets so sure just two helmets you have to yeah so there there's a helmet with a Green Dot just like you see in the n and uh that's the live guy so you can if their heads are different sizes well two of the helmets as far as the cow have uh his backup helmet and a helmet with the the I got player Coastal Player Communication in it so okay so he's got that we're not having to share qu helmet quite yet well yeah and I laugh about that because JH Rose had to go through they had to go through they lose everything so I'm just trying to get a visualize so so how many actual you know you have two helmets that will have the communication in them right and I told our equipment guy Steve that you know we'll try to keep a lot of pressure too for him especially so we'll try to keep that simple for you and only trade those guys out between series I said but you know we could get out stuck out there with nobody with the helmet communication which is fine I mean we've been there before so you're still going to do your signals and all that stuff I think we still got a signal we still got to do things like we've always done it you know offenses they're not going to have that problem because they're going to put it on the quarterback and right there's usually only one quarterback on the field that's true you know if they want to huddle and just you know solely use the coasta player communication they can so I do think it will change college football in time I think you'll see more of NFL style huddles more shif in motion trade and stuff like that so and it cuts off with 15 seconds to go before the play clock expires y there's an official up top that at 15 seconds on the play clock we we'll cut it off so you cation so what if you're in mid sentence I guess it cuts off you know it's a what have you found so far because you guys have have had to practice with yeah so we've been practicing quite a bit you know the one thing you know as I ask our players like hey coach you can give me all the information now if it's going fast like our offense does just give me the play call and that's all I need I got to get lined up I got to play but there's times uh you can see it being helpful especially during the scrimmages you can see like hey I helped him out there and there's times like you know I need hush hush and let him play there's a reason he's here but it it's it's just it's baffling to me I mean how what what do you say and what don't you say when you when you've got that I mean you know say hey hey you know tell tell Joe he's got to get his butt down and get in that hole that that that's like one of the things I've caught is like hey somebody's miss a line hey yell so and so and tell him this you know tell him to widen out two steps right stuff like that make sure he he's got number three man and that kind of thing so it if in some ways it's just for your comfort of yourself and they may already have it but uh you can get some things corrected pretty but the basic idea is you're going to call the defensive play now do you look and see what the offense is lining up at as you call the play is it kind of yeah we we've always just kind of hate what's the offense you know what kind of personnel they have on the field what are the kind of formation they get into and give them a call so so at the same time I give it to the the signaler zakai or whoever the linebacker is will hear it at the same time right so you may see like half our defense is looking the sideline the other half is already turning around getting ready to play because they already get the call in before the signal ever comes in I think there is a delay when I when it comes out of my mouth um you know that that call to Wi the signal gets it into the defense there's a probably two to three second delay wow yeah so man it just changes everything I mean get a chance to have a conversation and yeah and and you know at some point somebody's going to figure out a way to to to intercept your signal somehow or you know yeah let me know if you can figure that way yeah we'll make sure we work it the other way first yeah exactly that way and then you know you know it's it's technology so it's going to fail at some point you have time out we got to figure out why you know their their headphones aren't working so you can't use yours it goes down you know that's that's why you always got to go back to having signals ways to communicate and that's what the NFL guys gave us the the advice on it's like hey don't talk somebody's back swing and to like you always got to be prepared for it to go down cuz it will yeah that's the old golf at is don't talking to somebody's back swing but as any of the guys said yet Coach coach you're telling me too much man I can't I yeah it's happened yeah and that's that's part of of the practice idea just to try to you know during scrimmages and and that kind of thing my favorite part is when they're walking around practice and they don't really know and and you start talking to them they're like where's that voice coming from it's like voice of the almighty goes right into their helmet they got to figure it out but that's a yeah it's GNA change things I mean I I just can't imagine that that you know is the quality good I mean is it you know it'll it'll break up sometimes they'll let me know it's breaking up or you know it's like hey is it loud and off or how's it you know how's it working so I think we're going to do something for the coaching show and actually take the helmet and then you know put a microphone in it so people can see it I think a lot of people are interested in something like that it's it's here what goes on having two ear pods in each each helmet and you know the funny thing thing is players these days are used to that yeah you know they're all you walk on campus and and guys are walking around everybody's got earbuds in listening to something or jaming how they do it that would drive me crazy me too I you know but is exactly right every everybody has them everybody's listening to something so uh there you go East Carolina NOA state to kick off the coordinator for the euu Pirates and you're listening to Pirate Radio the voice of the pirate Nation you're listening to the Brian Bailey show powered by Greenville Utilities working for our community not for shareholders now back to the show welcome back as we continue on with Blake Harrell we wrap things up with Coach Harold getting back over to over to campus and get him working on that game plan plan for norol State we had a chance and we talked about this earli in the show we had a chance to watch norol State play on Saturday night in that Mak swack challenge down in Atlanta and they were probably 16 17 point underdogs but they really took the War uh to Florida A&M early on in the game LED 14- nothing and had a chance they did I mean broke the the third play of the game with about 82 yards yes saw that bam it's like oh I didn't wasn't expecting that big time run yeah and you know it's it's an advantage since we talked about earlier to see a team and and get some real tape on somebody but then it's a disadvantage because they've got the game one jits out of the way they're they're fired up ready to go they they've done all that and you guys have to do all that this week that's exactly right I mean game one you're probably having your your sloppiest game of the year making your most mistakes and you clean all that up for game two well they're going to game two we're going to game one right so I think in some ways yeah we we you know defensively I was excited to see exactly who they're going to be although I think that will change a little bit based off of you know the score of the game most of that game they LED so they ran the football and they only threw it nine 10 times yeah and um that was mostly in the second half so you know if we can get the score on score up on them or two scores up on them or if it's tight ball game is it going to be like last week so all those things can change based upon the the the circumstances of the game how do the butterflies hit differently for game one than the rest of the season I I think is it just the unknown yeah just maybe the unknown and just that hey you know we don't have something to build on last week that hey we we did this really well last week we can build on this or we did this poorly last week we need to grow from that and and and move on so you you kind of know where you are in preseason camp but again you're going against an opponent you know in our offense that hey they only have one style and this is a different style or you know them so well because you played against them for 20 practices 25 practices that you know your players know what to expect so now's a new a new time how old does it get when you go on and on practicing against the same bunch and I know it gets chippy sometimes because you know guys you know they're just tired of you know it's all it's all for one to one for all but when you're playing like that you know there there is a chance to get a little Chippy at time yeah you get tired of seeing the same opponent and they want to go tee off with somebody that's you know not wearing a purple or white jersey or and different opponents that's for sure last week Nori State didn't have a turnover they created one so they had a plus one in the turnover deal but they didn't turn it over and that's a good sign in week one for them for them not for us their quarterback did a really nice job of of protecting the football not throwing it in danger and um you know so the running backs took care of the football so we got to make sure we go attack that this week and we come out make them you know come with out with a different outcome of that again Jaylen Daniels took over for the suspended AOC Coons for nuli State Daniels was seven of nine 142 yards in the game uh the running back King 146 yards rushing averaged 10.4 yards per attempt in that game losing to Florida A&M the Rattler won it 2423 and Florida A&M was the defending celebration Bowl champions big favorites in that game uh so you had to when you watch you had to look at that and say hey nor State you know they they played really good football for week one they did and that's that's impressive yeah for the opponent they had and the uh what FAMU has done in the past year and and their preseason you know hopes and favorites and all that type of thing you thought North Folk State played really well yeah you know it's coming off the the SES of season they did um and what they were able to do the other night was impressed and you mentioned the tail backs I mean uh the king he's kind of we call him thunder and lightning he's kind of the lightning they had the big big day but the other kid was really the better running back last year and now kings came along looks like he's kind of the starter yeah can you give us any idea of what we're going to see on defense on Saturday what what are you what are you looking for when you guys take the field yeah I I think we need to see the same defense we've saw and improve on that you know how hard can we play You know guys flying around uh and playing physical knocking ball carries back and that'll be a big key to their run Run game you know they're they're running counters and pullers and you know can we take on those counters and pullers and knock those into guys in the back field create some chaos create some tackles for a loss and then when that comes we get them behind the sticks we can hopefully get that quarterback to put the ball in the air and create some turnovers how much is emotion involved in defensive football you know I think there is and you got to play with Edge yeah you know I think we talked to our players like that all the time like he there's a certain way defensively we got to go play the game you know we're not going to a golf match and just swing in sometimes like an offense might might do uh we got to go play The Edge and we got to get ready to ride and that's the same way we're going to treat practice that's the same way we're going to treat our meetings you've been around for those meetings sometimes and yeah um you know I think Holton was joking with me the other day he said it sound like a you were having a concert or a frat party in there like well hey we getting ready to go play football we getting ready to go play little defense and that's how we want to play the game that's how we want to attack and feel that energy and especially when we're in dowy fickle and and just feed off that energy of our fans and that can get us that's one of my favorite things to do at working with Coach Houston television show is is Brian meor or myself will go into the locker room to get some of that just to let the fans see what goes on with that now sometimes we have to make some edits obviously right but but just to see and and you know the offense goes in one corner the defense goes in the other corner and then after you guys finished then Coach Houston comes in and and to me man it's just it's such you know through my career that's one of the most favorite things I get a chance to do and get a chance to to show everybody that because you know there there's so much emotion involved but you can't be too emotional it's a it's a really fine line there because you don't want some guy to come in make a big tackle and somebody pile on and next thing you got 15 yards and that's right you know so I always use the duck comparison I said ducks are really calm on top you know they hey uh things get hectic in the game or offense going really fast or something bad happens they really come on top but underwater they're paddling like heck to make sure they get ready the job done yeah I tell you what what uh what are you most excited about for for Saturday night you get ready to go out there yeah being back in dowy just the energy that this this place deserves and and you know putting on our players going out there and showing them the hard work they've been you know put in the last nine 10 months and just giving them the fans what they deserve yeah I tell you it's uh it's going to be it's going to be a blast obviously but uh so much goes into it it's going to be a long day Saturday waiting and waiting and trying to get to the game itself but uh and then you hit the ground running I tell you it's just uh it's so much fun to watch and it's so much fun you know to see the guys when they Excel and then to you know talk to you guys afterwards because you know obviously you can't give away into the game plan right now but then later on you know you can kind of kick some things around we thought we could do this thought we could do that and and usually works out pretty well but uh is is it Nori State when you look at it is stopping the run is that the number one thing that you look at B based off last Saturday's game plan it would be I mean they ran for over 200 you better make sure you take care of those tailbacks you know if you go back to alorn State and what he did there they were more of a forvert uh throw the ball down the field team so we got to be prepared for that got to be prepared for the screens and obviously you know number one right now would be stop the run game all right coach we're going to let you get out of here we certainly appreciate your time on game week Happy game week to you and to the Pirates as well
