[Music] the drama in San Francisco has come to a close at least for Brandon auk welcome to NFL live Laura rutage is coming your way shortly from Gainesville Florida in advance of that huge Miami Florida game this weekend her mic is currently in the blue tent so we'll see when she takes the field Mina kimes Bill Barnwell Jeremy Fowler with us for the hour and huge news that broke after the hour after we got off air yesterday after holding in at 49ers camp all summer Brandon iuk and the team agreed to a 4year $120 million contract extension including 76 million guaranteed for the allp pro white out auk will now be paid an average of bang on $30 million per year with this new deal one of six receivers all time to average at least that much annually on a single contract and five of those deals got done this off season Justin Jefferson tops the list at an average of 35 Mill Jeremy Fowler we had a long back and forth and a number that should surprise nobody why would this deal finally able to get done last night yeah Phil two things I'm heard auk wanted to play in games he didn't want to sit out and hold out of that portion of it and then he was comfortable with the contract I'm told the major win for him was getting 47 million in guaranteed money in the first seven plus months of the deal so before April 1st he is due that cash he considered that a victory something he can hang his hat on and be comfortable with and really part of the issue why this took so long is because auk was willing to be traded to two teams essentially Pittsburgh Steelers who had the parameters of of a deal already worked out with Sam Fran s Fran just didn't pull the trigger on that and then Washington he wanted to play with Jaden Daniels with the commanders Washington never got heavily involved and so after that it just became weeks of staring at each other but finally it came to a point I think with this weekend coming it was time to check on the business and get it done yeah they did have the extra day featuring on Monday Night Football but mea this is a team that was a whisker away from winning the Super Bowl what was your reaction to where the two sides finally landed on this deal duh I this was The Logical most obvious resolution in part because what you just said this team is a Super Bowl Contender did never really made sense sense to me that they would move on from their number one wide receiver this season uh it also doesn't Mak sense because of what Brandon aayu does for this offense uh on third down un throws over 20 yards on throws outside the numbers on throws that take over 3 seconds he has led this Niners gr skill players in yards per route run and Target share essentially when Brock pie needed Brandon iuk when it whether it's because of situation or because of the level of difficulty to play or is he extending he has been his option he is the reason why this uh Pro ners offense not only uh stresses you in the Run game but also compromises you vertically I made no sense to me that they would move on from him this was the most logical resolution and I'm glad that it's finally done mostly just because we no longer have to talk about it [Laughter] our national nightmare finally is over with Brandon auk and this contract he's going to give opposing defenses fits though for the 49ers because he is a player who excels not just within the Shanahan system but he transcends it we have stats at the ESPN that record receiver tracking metrics across different uh nextg data one of those is open Score which tracks how open you get on a route by Route basis whether you've thrown thrown the ball or not Brandon iuk ranked eighth in that metric last year and the other starting receiver in this offense Deo Samuel who we all think is a great player ranked 128 by the same measure this is not just a thing where the offense is getting Brandon auk open he is getting himself open and making plays with the ball in his hands but what this really means to me is it just reinforces how Allin the 49ers are to win a Super Bowl this season with with their quarterback Brock pie making less than $1 million per year because next year we all know he's getting a massive raise likely north of $60 million per season and now there's another expensive contract on the books that the ners can't move on from to accommodate pery so if you're one of the players who is not Brandon iuk you're wondering about your future guys on defense like Dre Greenlaw and taleno huanga are going to be free agents next year on offense Debo Samuel himself George KD entering the final year of their deals next year and then of course Trent Williams the starting left tackle whose status for this year let alone next year seems totally uncertain well let's go right there I mean job not done for San Francisco Jeremy Trent Williams three times in a row he's been a first team All Pro what are you hearing about things stand with that left tackle yeah Phil the 49ers have work to do I'm told Trent Williams is not happy and the threat of him missing games is real a lot of times that's a negotiating Ploy I don't sense it is right now he's made $150 million in his career he's got no guaranteed money left on his deal he's the fourth highest paid left tackle right now despite being the best the last few years and he feels like this could have been addressed a lot earlier and San Francisco sort of bed on it so he's going to make them wait even longer they have had some talks nothing had heated up as of last night and this morning but the 49ers have a couple days here before they officially start week one on Monday they're hopeful to make some progress fourth highest paid left tackle currently the sixth highest paid offensive lineman in terms of average with Tristan worse leading the way hey players not the only ones cashing in this week somebody with not too distant San Francisco ties dolphin coach Mike McDaniel former OC in San Fran agreed to a three-year contract extension to stay in Miami through 2028 the extension puts McDaniel on the same timelines as quarterback toaga Vala who recently signed a four-year deal of his own worth 212 million dolphins have found their man in McDaniel after struggling to find consistency at head coach over the last 15 years the Dolphins have made the playoffs three times and two of those under McDaniel in the last two seasons the offense has exploded voted in that time ranking sixth in points third in yards that said Miami is 0 and2 in the playoffs under McDaniel still looking for their first playoff win since 2000 Jeremy why did the Dolphins feel the need to get this extension done despite the lack of playoff success thus far well the Dolphins love the marriage between Mike McDaniel and two attack of ioa they believe that McDaniel got the best out of him and has believed in him from the beginning got him to where he needed to go so it is no coincidence like you said that they're both under contract together for the next 5 years they like that Synergy but just as far as McDaniel as an individual key with any workplace work well with others I'm told McDaniel is great at that he coalesces with the entire building he and Chris Greer have a good collaborative relationship when it comes to personnel and really any matters that they need to tackle so they feel like he's somebody they can work with to a common goal for the next five years I love that point about McDaniel and Tua because when Tua signed his big contract and we were asked do you feel good about this you think it was smart my answer was well I feel good about it as long as Mike McDaniel is his head coach and the fact that they were able to lock McDaniel to a long-term deal it does feel like those two contracts are sort of intertwined because of their Mutual success and that success is based on a couple of things that I think have made McDaniel fantastic uh head coach for the Miami Dolphins one is of course his skill as an offensive play caller I mean we live in a I would say golden age honestly of offensive coaches but he might be the most Innovative all them for example that cheat motion that he uh pioneered in this offense where skill players take a short motion to get a running head start on their side of the formation you have literally seen coaches around the league your sha McVey your mattlures copy that from Mike McDaniel and then there's the intangible side of it which again I think Tua is a testament to that building the confidence rebuilding the confidence let's call it what it is of the most important player of football team when we talk about what makes coaches successful it's qualities like that and so the fact that has exhibited those things already uh I think made this a no-brainer obviously you got to have playoff success obviously the degree of difficulty is going to get harder now that they paid twoa but his record thus far has been very impressive to me yeah you can poke HS in what he's done with Tua Tunga vioa Tyreek Hill and the offense for most of the year but there's still two major issues with this team that mik MC Daniel has the head coach needs to address and solve on this next deal one is what happens after December 1st they have been so good in the season they always have wrinkles to show teams early in the year but they're 16- six before December 1st under McDaniel Just 4 10 afterwards the offense has taken a setep backwards the running game hasn't been as effective and they haven't had answers in the passing game even when two has been healthy after December 1st and then I think the bigger concern here for the head coach is on the defensive side of the football obviously not Mike McDaniel's strength but he plays a meaningful role in hiring the defensive coordinator and that has not worked out they're on their third defensive coordinator now in three seasons under McDaniel after moving on from Vic banio after last season and they don't have as much talent on that side of the ball as they had last year this team has been last in the AFC East in points a lot per possession the past two seasons and it's probably cost them at least one if not two division titles so for the Dolphins and for McDaniel I think getting this defensive coordinator higher right with Anthony Weaver finding pieces they can build around on defense over the course of this next extension as Tua gets more expensive is going to be essential to building a more cohesive and complete football team yeah bill I mean despite all that offensive success they've allowed the seventh most points per game under McDaniel now moving on to Anthony Weaver who comes over from Baltimore hey uh new on NFL Live fore spee spee [Music] for speech foreign
