he wanted them to be ready to come out of that Locker Room walk down the tunnel and go to that closed gate where together they would hop around they would look at the tunnel leading out onto the field ahead of them led by the marching band Led by dubs get that purple smoke going this is something you only get at the greatest setting in college football seven times a year if you're lucky six times this year because the Huskies have that neutral sight game coming up in a couple of weeks the Boeing apple cup series at Lumen field only six games at the greatest setting in college football this season and the dogs get one of those rare opportunities to run out of the tunnel moments from right now against FCS number 22 Weaver State remember that cam remember what it's like what it sounds like in that Hollow tunnel yeah I can tell you for somebody that that's been in that tunnel before what they're all feeling right now they don't care who they're playing they just want to hit somebody you want you want to get that first shot from the kickoff to your first catch to your first tackle all of those firsts for these young men tonight this group right here tonight has got a lot to say about this Husky football program in 2024 it's Seattle sports day here at Husky Stadium so the mascots for the Mariners and the Sounders and uh and a lot of other Seattle sports franchise is sound the siren as we get ready to have this team run out of the tunnel under the leadership of Jed fish and we talked about some of those veterans cam you know this is regardless of the new course that's being said this is a team where the guys that were on in on and in this program the last couple of years they know what it's like to be a Pack 12 Champion they know what it's like to compete with the best of the best and uh talking to running backs coach Scotty Graham when he first got here I said does it feel kind of like the rebuild that you had at Arizona he said nothing like that when we got to Arizona we had to teach them how to work we had to teach him that winning was possible when we come here yeah there's a rebuild yeah there were a lot of guys that left but man the foundation was laid because these guys know what the standard is and know what it looks like to win and this program just produced its first Heisman runner up in program history in Michael pennick the number eight overall draft pick in the NFL draft now with the Atlanta Falcons number nine was r OD dun right behind him he's on the big board right now and now we're talking about the guys that were the bones of of that team last year who are back for this year the cam fulan the Carson bruners the Elijah Jacksons guys that are getting ready to head out of that tunnel as veteran leaders of this 2024 husky team video playing on the Husky Stadium big board right now like of Napoleon Hoffman miles gasin and there's Dylan Johnson and Michael pennx and some of the guys from last year's this year's husky captains make their walk out first and they're heading to the north side the north sideline over there and this year's captains for the dogs you got Will Rogers starting quarterback and then five other guys that have been in this program for a while Cam Davis Brady gross as the the place kicker was voted a captain by his peers Alonso tuputala Carson Bruner and cam fabiculanan walked their way to the 50 yd line ahead of their 104 teammates here comes the purple smoke the crowd starts to swell the cheerleaders are jumping up and down between the marching band members who are making a tunnel out of that Northwest tunnel and now that purple smoke continues to em here above Husky Stadium before the dogs make their way out to the purple W one of the great traditions in the Pacific Northwest Washington Huskies football we're about to renew that tradition four minutes from right now Jed fish and the visor as the dogs are there behind the closed gate gate opens here come the Washington Huskies [Applause] defending national Runners up number two in the nation 14 and one a year ago and the forever Pack 12 Champions After making their run through the conference unblemished it'll be taken on Weaver State a team that went six and5 in the FCS a year ago Weaver State coming out out of a a conference that is predicted to be probably the toughest in the FCS they're number 22 in the country but preseason number six in the Big Sky the Big Sky had six ranked teams in the preseason FCS poll the coin toss is moments away and we're getting ready to begin the jet fish era his first year udubb fourth year overall 17- 22 in his time as a head coach Weaver State out on the field with their black helmets and pants and Road white jerseys led by head coach Mickey mentle 39 years old a graduate of division 3 Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio has a little bit of head coaching experience himself was the head coach of Notre Dame college a division 2 school in Ohio where he went 16 and2 during the 20 and 21 Seasons he was the OC Weaver State 22 before taking over the head coaching job in in 2023 went six and five in his first year the captains are out there and we're ready for the coin toss Francisco Valar is our referee his big 10 Crews the captains are shaking hands on the purple W and Francisco Valar will handle the coin toss end overend Washington you won the toss Huskies win the toss and they will kick it away it sounds like Washington as wsas elected toer their choice in the second half to start the game Weber State will receive let's have some fun gentlemen and we will get to see the Steve bellich defense on the field first for the Huskies all right cam let's go enough talk let's play some football my friend this is a defense led by Steve belich in his first year coaching college football he's been in New England the last 12 with his dad by the name of Bill one of the greatest coaches all football history and also Steve in his bio he talks a lot about his grandpa also named Steve Bill's Dad Steve belich who was a 34-year assistant coach at Navy played in the NFL with the Detroit Lions before his time in Annapolis helping coach the midshipman all those out to their own 25 yd line not just the jetfish era but the Big 10 era big beginning and we'll see this big 10 defense that Washington has with Steve belich as the defensive coordinator Richie Muno starting quarterback for Weaver State a true sophomore and he heads out there you're going to see Isaiah Ward as one of the edges and he will be opposite Zack dery for Washington's defense Jacob Bandz the down lineman along with Sebastian Valdez and at theine linebacker position Carson Bruner Alfonso tala thus Dixon gets the start at corner opposite Ephesians price sock and Jordan Shaw is the Nickelback the transfer from Indiana Munoz goes out of the shotgun for the first play of the season and takes the snap rolls out throws and it's incomplete in coverage eesan price on that side look like Isaiah Ward gave him a little pressure the pass and 10ed for jayen record it'll be second down and 10 at the 30 yd line already under pre pressure number 10 Richie Munoz just a small little fake but man the discipline you could see it from this defense Isaiah Ward they've had a ton of time to scheme this up and see exactly what Weaver States bringing opening drive for the wild cats out of the FCS there's a snap to Munoz hand off right side Bankston has space across the 3035 hit hard by cam fulan in 39 yd line a yard shy of the first down but deont Banks who had 388 rushing yards in five games a year ago before the season ending injury looked good on his first Carry of 2024 it's third and one yeah Bankston looked to explosive big heavy backfield as they had three back there lead blocking around that right side but a physical impact Munoz out of the gun Bankston lines behind him in a pistol formation five lineman here they hand it to Bankston on third down hit at the line of scrimmage might have fallen forward and I think he's got the first down to the 40 yd line it was good contact from Washington but Bankston strong 511 190 lbs doesn't look like the biggest running back but able to muscle out a yard and move the sticks well it was Sebastian Valdez is he just shucked away the left guard moved right into that impact but it just enough to lean and get that first down two wide into the boundary from the right hash mark make it three wide into the boundary as Valdez takes a snap throws it into the flag caught by record beyond the numbers up the right sideline pushed out of bounds Alonso tuputala the linebacker got to him at the 44 yd line G of four to batala's First tackle of the season in his 41st career game just like a lot of teams that run the spread in the no huddle they want to go wide get you out in space run the quick outside scheme then come back with an inside Zone scheme they go wide that time three wide to the field this time the one receiver wide into the boundary is Jaden thrower he's defended by Ephesians pryck on the far side Muno is out of the gun second down and six opening drive for Weber stay to their own 44 handoff Bankston in trouble bounces from right to left runs into Cam fabiculanan who gets him to the ground finally at the 50 yd line but a strong run of six when it looked like he had no space to the right he found a little bit of daylight to the left and he's got a first down for Weaver State well it was great defense from the start because they cut off to the left but the way he bounced back to his left and ended up picking up and if it wasn't for camab making that tackle would have been more and would have got that first down they're calling this third down and about a foot and where they first placed the ball I thought he clearly got across Midfield but they're going to say third and a foot here for Weber State after fabiculanan tackle three down lineman for the Huskies on this play they're bringing CER May into the back field a fullback hand off goes Bankston he's grabbed and thrown down on the play by Deshawn Lynch transfer from Sacramento State who got to him right at the line of scrimmage I didn't think he gained anything but they're giving him a first down yeah third and a foot he picked up two feet just enough to fall forward good impactan Lyn he Slants to the inside great hits I mean it's a hit right at the line of scrimmage but just strong enough to fall forward and pick up that first down so Weaver State putting a bit of a drive together they picked up a couple of first downs bston stays in the game at running back align on the left hip a Richie Muno is out of the shotgun there's the snap hand off Bankston space to the right 4540 stunter step stiff arm 35 into Mel EST who escorts him out of Bounds at the 32 yd line a gain of 18 on the play for deont Bankston who's got five carries for 34 yards well it's a patience on the counter play heading into the back field kind of looked like the way cam hit it his helmet popped off AB on that Blitz but great run on the outside Munoz takes the snap hand off Bankston again and this time nowhere to go he's closed off on the play we see elenius Davis into the ball game making his husky debut big number 90 helping clog things up on the play Carson Bruner there for the tackle his first of the Season he was the team's thirdd leading tackler a year ago in the 14-1 season it's going to be second and nine sure looks like the way weeper state they're trying to run the football immediately nothing attacking downfield with the throws they're trying to take and attack the right side of this husky defense if they've run power and counter both back to the right quite a bit during this series Marvin session is in a slot to the left it looks like Jaden Brower wide to the left that side bring a Man in Motion snap Munoz he's going to check down ball Dro by jayen record who was the man that came in motion they just threw it to him in the flat he started to turn his head without the football it's third down and nine for Weaver State they've got it at the Washington 31 on their opening drive 1044 on the first first quarter clock well I think he heard number 42 Carson Bruner coming right at him because if he catches that football Brew was there to make that tackle but you could hear the footsteps and this the first time right here at third down dogs can get off the field yeah husky Nation needs to get loud on this play they've already converted a couple of third Downs earlier in the drive snap de Muno is on Third and nine little bit of pressure throws up the left sideline knocked away Fus Dixon incomplete great coverage he was all over tjon Evans the intended target down to the 10 yd line but thus Dixon was able to rise toward the football and knock it away with his right hand well the contact started by Evans number 81 and I thought about you could see the referees I didn't know if they thought they was going to be let that go but thus just physical gets up over the top swats the ball down as it stayed in the air that's what you need now they're going to kick that field goal great job by this defense Kyle Thompson's one of the best field goal kickers in the FCS three for four in his career Beyond 50 yards he's going to try a 48 y here from the right hash mark but a timeout that has been called by Washington in this situation with 1037 to go in the first quarter looks like Tony they might have had 12 on the field some confusion so one of those opportunities get a timeout so you don't give a free five yards let chip it down to the pinseeker sidelines with Dave sof merer yeah Tony Cam's exactly right you had 12 guys on the field they had multiple players and coaches yelling for a timeout they got it and by the way that last Drive they were players getting through that defensive line Isaiah Ward on the big second down play had a chance to make a tackle just forcing Weaver State to go scoreless on its 4 and a half minute drive in the opening drive of the Season well very happy with the way that turned out look Weaver State came out with a game plan they scripted they saw a few things they ran some power where they pulled a fullback and had guards to the right they cut off some edges but when you needed to when you got inside right around that 30 yd Line Washington bringing pressure Corners making plays guys tackling and that's when you bow up and stop this team and you come out and you give the ball now zero points every chance for your offense because they can't get a blocking scheme against you you know cam what's interesting is with all the success the huskys had last year last year actually ended an 11year run of Washington being in the top four in the Pack 12 in scoring defense every year for 11 straight years they were sixth in the conference and scoring defense a season ago and so I think this husky team is really trying to get back to his defensive Roots as they hand off left side Bankston angles left he runs right into Zack dery Alonso tuputala and a quick timeout called with 124 to go before halftime the Huskies will force a punt it'll be fourth down and 12 and they'll have plenty of time to operate I really like this two-minute it already benefits you can see that extra timeout changes the Rhythm a little bit and to the stadium here's Tony cter con 35 to3 Washington defeats Weaver State not a bad debut dogs almost doubling up Weaver State and yardage 482 to 253 the ran for 200 yards on the ground like cam wanted to see is one of his keys to the game pretty much the only key to the game that didn't come to fruition was no turnovers by the Husky Defense Force but they didn't give any away so the margin stay at zero in that department that was something that that you wanted to see that coach fish wanted to see but really what you really want to see is a win and something that doesn't make you sweat and I I I thought tonight Washington looked like it especially given the circumstances looked like it should look against an FCS opponent it looked good yeah absolutely the first half there were some feel out moments and defense is always going to have the heads up because you're in reactionary mode offense is trying to get the field you have the offensive line changes you have you get to see Jonah Coleman come out and have some big plays Will Rogers and then in the second half Tony this team came out and went right down the field 90 yards and then from there the floodgates opened they just started to feel the tempo was good the defense continued to get off the field it was great yeah you talk about that first drive of the second half 12 plays 90 yards uh talk about a way to set the tone but you know the the first couple drives of the ball game were a little bit shaky they had to switch things up on the offensive line to really get things going and it's when they did that they got the first touchdown Drive of the game seven plays 65 yards and it was by doing something we didn't see a ton of in Fall camp and that was moving Drew as a party the right tackle transferred from San Diego State over to the left side they took the youngster soan F solo out of the ball game and eventually brought him back in but what that did was that moved the big oh State transfer Enoch bayi from Right Guard over to right tackle you insert Landon Hatchet in the middle of the line and that really seemed to give the offense a really good push I think we're going to see that continuing all the way through potentially the apple cup and when you get into Big 10 play and conference starts there's going to be a settling in into who the guys are and you need to get a chance to put it on film and earn those spots and certainly when you have the limited amount of starts as a group and a very competitive group yeah this is a this is what the coaching staff wants to see okay we're going to put it on Films see who performs and then we can make those decisions as the season goes but for an opener as a group very happy with him Jonah Coleman 16 carries a buck 27 and three rushing touchdowns I mean that was a a pretty impressive performance and I I think it's not just that he had those numbers but it's kind of the way he did it he looked dominant yes he is there's everybody now he's on film folks it from everybody that's going to be watching film uh
