Holocaust survivor dies from recalled Boar's Head deli meat, family says

Night. A local family is heartbroken after they say a loved one died after eating deli meat from boar's head. You may remember last month, the company recalled 71 boars head and old country products made between May 10th and July 29th due to a Listeria outbreak. Some of those products were tied to a plant in Central Virginia. Stephanie Johnson joins in the studio after speaking with the son of a man who died, Stephanie. Yeah, Dan, this is so sad. The centers for disease control and prevention say at least three people have died following the company's recall. The family of Gunter Gars Shan Morgenstein of Newport. News says he is one of them family members of Gunter Gars Shan Morgenstein are still shocked by how he died. We're all still in shock for all of the things you know that he's seen and been through in his life to come to that, you know, much meat. Gars Sean Morgenstein says his father grew up in Germany and is a Holocaust survivor. He says his father's parents would hide him in the floorboards of their home until they were able to escape Germany and move to America. Years later, he never imagined this is how his 88 year old father would die. He always ate lunch meat. Always bore his head. Um, you know, and, and me too, for a good majority of my life, I don't eat, you know, live or worse. But, um, that was something that he ate and, you know, those types of things because he was European. But, um, yeah, I mean, we're, we're all still in shock when his father got sick on July 8th and died. 10 days later, Morgenstein says he went through his father's shopping history and he saw he bought Boar's head deli meat. Later, his death certificate would confirm his cause of death. List. Men, meningoencephalitis. He had meningitis at the end, you know, they had to do a lumbar puncture um to um confirm that and that meningitis is a side effect of the listeria. Although Morganstein is still coping with his father's death. He says he wishes he can tell his father one thing I love you and I miss you and I'm sorry that this happened. Morganstein says the family is pursuing a lawsuit with Boar's head for his father's death. Stephanie Johnson 13 news now. Ok. Stephanie Morganstein says the community plans to hold a celebration for life, uh, life for his father in September in Newport News. And part of this recall, Boris had released a statement saying that quote, we deeply regret the impact this recall has had on affected families. No words can fully express our sympathies and the sincere and deep hurt we feel for those who have suffered losses or endured illness.
