one of the Cowboys biggest weaknesses in 2023 might end up being one of their biggest strengths in 2024 on Sunday the Cowboys defense had the Browns in purgatory Cleveland's top two backs had just 14 carries for 54 yards the running game was not going anywhere the passing game in the flats and over the middle really struggled to do anything and I think we all know why the linebacker play on Sunday was tremendous overon and Kendrick were flying all around the field making tackles filling running Lanes super quick the Browns offense just had no room to breathe so that's what we're going to watch today we're going to take a look at the film from demarvion overshown so let's get into [Music] it I just want to say Happy Victory Monday to everyone out there it might not be Victory Monday when you're watching this video so happy Victory week to all the Cowboys fans and po entally Cowboys haters watching this video overon was flying all over the field yesterday watch him not get fooled by the eye candy right here a guy is going to motion across and they're going to go play action left but as soon as he sees that tight end running out into the flat his closing speed to get to nooku is just insane and that's something that we're going to see time and time again on this film the speed that overon plays with the ability to read and react SE ball hit ball it's scattered all over the field against Cleveland this play did end up resulting in a penalty on Cleveland but overon still comes up snuffs out that play pretty quick plays like this are where I think everyone's going to love Mike Zimmer third and 10 overshown and Kendricks are up on the line of scrimmage they could Blitz they could drop back in coverage at the snap overshown rushes Kendrick drops back in man coverage on Amari now that's not a matchup that you really want but because they disguise it and muddy the waters up front Watson does doesn't have that throw that he wants with overshown rushing the Cowboys are winning in numbers on the left side three against two overshown and Kendrick's threatening to rush I think Watson's a little bit confused on what exactly it is he's seeing keeping the running back into block and accounting for those two extra rushers would have probably been the right move then you have six blockers to account for those six rushers but I think Watson is seeing the quick out to Amari as the right throw because the safety is seemingly given him so much cushion but when Kendrick's drops back in play Man Watson has to scramble so with overshown rushing the left tackle has to take the inside guy Lawrence is a free rusher but overon actually wins his rep right here against the left tackle just an overall great call on third down you'd like to avoid the scramble yards with Micah holding the edge a little bit better but it ends up working out and the Cowboys get a third down stop this play is the athleticism and speed that we talk about all the time Jerry Judy is going to motion into the back field and they're going to throw it from there overon puts his foot in the ground and gets to Judy on the sideline for a four yd gain on second and 15 and the next thing you know the Browns are looking at third and 11 I mean just look at the closing speed for most linebackers right here they're beat they don't have the ability to change direction and get to that wide receiver that already has a couple steps on them it's no problem he's still able to change direction and chase him down for just a short gain late in the second quarter Cleveland was really trying anything to get positive yards on offense this time they're going to go with a screen to nooku overon Fades towards him in the flat and before the center can even get over there to set up a block Deo has already sniffed it out and made a tackle for just another three yard gain it's crazy how fast the read and react speed is because en joku hasn't even caught this ball yet and overon is already in position to make a tackle okay we're going to talk about one final play and it's the one that I really wanted to talk about because I kind of realized in that moment that the linebacker play is just going to be an X Factor for this defense this year I figured it would be better than 2023 but this just kind of sealed the deal something that I had talked about during the off season with overshown was using him as a defensive weapon use him in Blitz packages spy the quarterback drop into coverage make him do it all and up to this point Zimmer had used him in a number of different ways this play though we get to see him as the quarterback spy on a fourth and six almost immediately Watson bailes out of the pocket rolls right and I think Watson believes he can get the edge right here and walk for the first down but overshown as the Spy just tracks him down and this play reminded me so much of the Micah sack in that Saints game a few years ago and kind of like Tamm Hill on that play Watson is legitimately surprised by how fast Deo closes the distance I'm not really sure that Watson even knows he has a spy until he's literally getting sacked I mean right here he has 10 yards of cushion and before he can even realize what's happening the play is over I had to go back and watch the film because overon was just flying all over the field it felt like every single drive he was making a splash play he was popping off the screen so I wanted to go back see that on the film and it was even more impressive before we go I also wanted to give Eric Kendricks his flowers as well I thought he had a great game I just wanted to make a demo film review because we preached about his development all off season long and what it could mean for the defense and seeing it come together in week one in his first ever NFL game is just awesome I'm sure I'll be making a video on Kendricks over the next few weeks but until then if you guys want more film reviews please comment a player's name down
