Matthew Stafford Postgame PRESS CONFERENCE vs. Lions; "HUMBLING" to lose again in Detroit

it was good um you know I thought it was a fun place to you know fun place to play crowds into it obviously a great football game that helps that helps make the crowd get into it um back and forth all day so um it was it was a good atmosphere um yeah I mean it is what it is you know we're professional football players what we're um you know it's what we do it's what we practice um I was really proud of the way those guys played to be honest with you um there was some unfortunate things that happened um you know up front with guys getting injured and not being able to come back in the game and uh those guys battled through you know we were already kind of thin at that spot you know with some of the stuff going on um you know at our tackle position there for a little bit so to for those guys to step in and play the way they did I was I was super proud of them um you know we drop back and threw the ball I don't know how many times we threw it but we threw it you know a decent amount of times today and um I thought they did a really nice job of battling man it's never going to be perfect um but uh man they they they battled and then you know I think our guys on the outside they had to come in and step up when you know puka uh couldn't come back in the game either um they really battled as well what's the hardest part oh I mean I mean taking Snaps from Center but those guys were lights out today they were great bo bo limmer first snap was a little high and hot but he had some juice which I can imagine um you know first snap in the NFL pistol on the road here we go a little high and hot we handled it but the rest of the day was was smooth operating yeah you know I mean I think it kind of boils down to the last time we came here some circumstances and the fact that we didn't come away with enough points in the Red Zone you know obviously right before the half had a really nice drive I turned the ball over um I don't I don't hate the decision just don't like the ball that I threw you know um higher and harder probably gets us a touchdown in a better spot but uh you know that was a tough one we don't come away with points had another chance uh went forward on fourth down didn't come away with points um and then uh you know had to get we were on the one yard line settle for three points too so that was that was kind of the name of the game for us um you know had our opportunities but uh weren't able to capitalize on him and um still at the end of the game you know if I if I can hit that ball to Cooper U we're just a little bit on different pages on where we were heading on that one and and uh totally understand what he was doing it's uh it's part of the game it's a game of football um humbling but uh fun to compete you're good you know I'm not sure with those guys I'm not sure I don't know that go we came here to try to win the game I thought it was uh you know an opportunity where we get a you know one of our best players guy that we have a ton of trust in um with the look that we had wanted and we just didn't make it but uh we came in here with an aggressive mindset and mentality uh didn't feel like you could settle for field goals that's why we came up short the last time and then ultimately a couple of those situations is inevitably what ended up leading to us probably not finishing it out tonight U the penalty was big one to bring the touchdown back and then having a turnover and then that one that you alluded to but all those are growth opportunities for us but um we came here to to be aggressive and and I wouldn't take that decision back yep well they were big you know we got the looks that we wanted and we got the look that we wanted on the third down as well um and and you know what this is that's part of it there was a lot of great individual plays there was a lot of guys that stepped up you know I was proud of Warren McLendon thought AJ Airi coming in I mean you fle him up from the practice squad no boom goes down he plays the whole second half he's going against one of the Premier rushers in this league uh for the majority of the game and I thought our guys did a good job of being able to help and lend some presence um but he should be proud of the way that he handled himself tonight I'm not going to make an excuse I mean there was you have to adjust and adapt I mean and certainly there was a lot of things that we were planning on doing doing that wouldn't be smart or wise based on the circumstances that we were dealt with but um I wouldn't ever make an excuse um we had our chances you know and our guys gave us those guys that were playing tonight led by Matthew gave us a chance you know I thought Cooper would made a bunch of plays obviously Demarcus Robinson Tyler Johnson has the big shallow cross that he converts for a big deal we got a lot of hidden yards too with some of the piis that ended up moving the ball down into the tight red area um and ultimately some of these penalties they're learning opportunity for us um but that's part of it you have to adjust and adapt I thought we did a you know fairly decent job of that but you know we uh we came up short and this is an opportunity for us to be able to move forward but um I am proud of this group like I had mentioned you know it's tough when you come out here and go toe-to-toe it's an excellent football team I got a ton of respect for Coach Campbell and the way that they do their deal um and they ultimately closed it out and hats off to them for doing that yeah I thought they did awesome Adam I mean really even John Johnson's interception what a freaking play by him I mean it's a bang bang play right over the middle um and and that that was a huge momentum shift you know had an opportunity Kobe uh Durant ends up making a play on a you know when we brought him as a corner Blitz and then he gets the break up on third down almost ended up making the pick but um I thought they were great you know they played hard um you could see they they had him uh they had him off balance I thought Chris schula and our defensive coaches did an excellent job and then ultimately the players brought it to life and we just came up short but they definitely kept us in the game I mean to have three points at halftime to have some of the opportunities that we missed offensively even though we were sustaining possession really with the exception of the first drive where we went three and out we were up and down the field but the only Come Away with three points that's where you're going to come up short and um I'm looking forward to looking at this tape figuring out how I can be better for guys and how we can ultimately move forward because we got 16 of these things guaranteed kept coming man they fought and they fought um and it was um you know man it was you know there's a lot of I respect it I do I respect it and that quarterback man Stafford I thought played lights out man and and played tough and hit after hit get just kept getting up and making unbelievable throws so um I just give them a lot of credit they did they fought now um but but we're hard to break so we did what we had to do and uh you know our defense held there uh before that fox makes a heck of a punt and defense holds offense we get it back and uh you know get it in overtime we win the toss and and we don't look back so we eventually found our Rhythm we did what we had to do and I said it earlier in the week the team that makes the most mistakes is the one who usually loses these early games and uh we made one less mistake and and uh so now we just got to improve from there yeah sure I mean look there's always going to be that and and uh there's always going to be I'm telling you uh you know I just pulled up the first two games uh you know the Thursday game Baltimore casy and then Green Bay Philly and you just go through and you just you just try to go you know fly through it and look at you know things that man are what kind of games are these are they what you think they are and and it's you know some of these mistakes show up and does it cost the other team how many and man it's inevitable it's every year and it it really is it's you know first game and the ones that that that can just play basic football the best man the you know the blocking the tackling targeting communication taking care of the football being smart with it the check down it it it's they win and um so yeah there's things that man they're going to come along with it and it's the first time a lot of these guys in a while have have played that many plays with that much intensity um you know and so this is our first taste we'll get better we'll get in a better flow um on both sides of the ball we will but the end of the day our defense uh held these guys to less points than our offense and our offense scored more points and their offense did and so uh we found a way to win Jam Camp to come in here have a couple big plays 121 yard touch down for to get off that yeah listen I you know uh expected him to to play pretty good you know to play better um and uh and he showed up I mean that was a that was a big game you know to be able to catch some of these and go through it and the best part of it was he didn't even play his best ball there's still so much to clean up um but it also shows the work that he's put in and he he is improving and he's an improved player and he wants it man and he keeps working on it and he just he keeps taking these steps so as long as he keeps doing it um and keeps making plays he's just going to continue to get better so yeah I'm proud of him I'm proud of where he's at but he's got so much room to continue to grow hello everybody Welcome in here truth serum again Joey the truth Wagner with you make sure to give us a thumbs up everybody click that like button and subscribe to the channel Bell on if you enjoy the content tonight you just listen to the postgame press conferences here for the thrilling game on Sunday Night Football between the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions the rematch of last year's playoff game on Wildcard Weekend just like last year super close result tonight that Detroit Lions win in overtime 26- 20 over McVey Stafford and the Rams Montgomery had the winning touchdown the winning rushing score in overtime to end it as the fatigue really set in in this game everybody the fatigue really set in once overtime hit and that is pretty much what happened fatigue said in and the Lions just ran the football right down the throats right down the throats of that La defense and it was Hook Line Sinker and game but what a game this was everybody the Rams showed a lot of fight they were trailing in this game they were down 17 to three out one point in the second half they went on a run scoring 17 unanswered points and the Rams actually had the lead late in the fourth quarter in this one they were up 20 to 17 but Jared Goff LED Detroit down the field for a game tying field goal Drive in the final minute not at the game up at 20 and then they won the coin toss went right down the field in OT ball game very gutsy effort by Matthew Stafford tonight in his return again to Detroit he was 34 of 49 317 yards a touchdown had the very foolish Red Zone interception in the end zone that really comes up big now with how this game ended massive mistake but a really gutsy performance by him and Cooper cop as well Cooper cop tying a career high 14 receptions 110 yards and a touchdown cop was targeted 21 times 21 times the Run game struggled for for the ram so it was basically Stafford and cop dragging them to overtime in this game everybody pretty much dragging them to [Music] OT puka nakua left the game with a knee injury we really are unsure of his status right now but close not good enough for the Rams for Detroit the Run game really took over for them as a team they ran for 163 yards over five yards a carry Montgomery we said had the winning touchdown 91 yards on the ground jir Gibbs had 40 yards rushing in a touchdown Gibbs also added 34 yards receiving to that Jameson Williams had a long 52 yard touchdown showing his deep threat a ability and Jared Goff did enough to win the game 18 to 28 217 a touchdown a pick everybody these are what this game was today just two very good football teams two very very good football teams going at it and just a play here a play there the difference I mean these teams played in in the playoffs it was decided by one point tonight it goes into overtime and it's decided that you really can't play any more even of football than these two teams have played the last two times they have faced but thank you for watching the postgame
