Bill O'Brien is joining us today earlier today we caught up with Bryce young out at Panthers Camp a few blocks from here obviously he has such great respect for you the two years that you spent with him I read a comment where one time you said he might be the most prepared quarterback that I've ever dealt with and the first thought I thought was well you've dealt with Tom Brady and DeShaun Watson yeah what's the best example you can give us that we don't see on the football field of what the Panthers have in Bryce young yeah you have a very special guy there he as it relates to college there's no doubt he was the most prepared guy I ever coached um you know I try not to use Tom Brady in the same sentence with anybody you know he's he's in his own category Bryce was a brilliant guy he was a brilliant uh player um he was a great teammate he was very prepared he would he would show up on in in college football on Mondays and Tuesdays having watched two years worth of the next opponent and ready to to to talk about it and ready to talk about the coverages that they play the routes that he think will be good against those coverages the protection problems that we might have relative to the blitzes they bring very prepared player so it it was it was a great time in my career to to be able to coach a player like that he was awesome to coach what do you say to people that overreact to a small sample size with the player as young as he is I say to to people you know that that that jump on that it's very difficult as a rookie to play quarterback in the NFL it's one of the most difficult things to do it's a massive jump it's a different game it's a faster game the big guys are just as fast as the smaller guys the and and you have to understand like look it takes time there's very you know look CJ strad went out and had a great year okay that's great great for them and great for Houston but most of the time it takes time it takes time if you look at you go back to pton Manning he was they were one in 15 as rookie year right give Bryce time keep surrounding him with the right guys the the the right offensive line the right receivers tight ends and running backs and Bryce is a very special guy he'll get it done when you say things generally like it's so hard for rookies to do so we hear guys now talking about Bryce from year one to year two saying it's the full calendar off season that he has how much of the difficulty is that you're not able to get a Playbook or be a part of a team until May 1 and this year college football is finally having the helmets with mics in it just the process of playing quarterback that's also an adjustment too in addition to learning it for a rookie in the there's no doubt about that so I think that that's a great point I mean you know for Bryce last year he went through all the draft preparations and the the pro days and all the visits that he did and so now now finally if you fast forward he's got the experience that he went through which you know was a tough experience but now he's got a full year to prepare like you said he understands the offense he's been meeting with Coach Canales they've got a great staff Dan Morgan's the GM I I I think I would never bet against Bryce young I think Bryce young is g to be a very special player in that League they've had a couple Cycles the last turn of events you've known Bryce as the quarterback there likely for a while did you ever consider looking or pursuing being with the Panthers do you look at that at all no I was never you know that wasn't any I was never contacted by the Panthers um but no it you know coaching Bryce at Alabama was an awesome experience for me no doubt about it let's get the Boston College because Bill O'Brien's with us here you wouldn't know this but our show so a couple years ago I'm doing a television interview and I'm very I'm making a point very demonstratively about Boston College and in the meme age of the internet somebody thought that anytime Boston College comes up my mentions are going to get filled with that meme to the point where a listener of the show actually got a Fathead cutout of it and on college game day in Charlotte it's my face saying the words Boston College right behind Lee Corso's head so we are in on BC good you got Thomas casianos back at quarterback what's the case for BC what was so appealing about the job to you yeah look I I think there's a lot of things that appealed to me about the job uh I grew up in the area I grew up a huge BC fan when I was a kid I dreamed about being head coach at BC my career took me on different you know Pathways and things like that you know but in the end this is a job that is a great fit for me uh I love going to work every day I think at this stage of my career I wanted a place where I couldn't wait to get to work you know to be to work every single day my wife went to school there she's a 92 grad I have a lot of great friends that played there there's just a lot of good things for me and my family when it comes to Boston College I believe in BC I believe we can do it there I believe that you know if we recruit the right way we we get guys that can Embrace what BC's all about then we'll have a shot you know so I'm looking forward to this training camp I've had a great time coaching this team so far and I'm excited it's good to have you here and I got to imagine if you grew up a BC fan where were you and the Doug fluty Hail Mary happened to gets Miami I was in my living room I was about probably 15 16 years old I saw fluty play when he was a freshman when he was a sophomore you know I was there when they beat Penn State when they beat Clemson when they beat Alabama you know I saw those games did you overlap with the Patriots when he did the fake spike or when he did the drop kick I came right after that I came right after that I've never seen Bill bellich more happy than when they executed the he loved the Drop Kick the drop kick yep so no I I grew up with it yeah the flut of years was when I was really that's really formed my my fandom of college football to be honest with you is when when fluty was playing so I'm excited to to be representing that school right now that's for sure well welcome to the ACC thank you so much for the time that's Bill O'Brien
