we've got a team that makes it into the top 25 now when you go on the road that's when you prove you belong [Music] [Applause] [Music] BYU about to kick it off as we get this game started from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 all right guys here's our first look at this offense today and here comes this quarterback this entire offense is built around him he is the engine of the entire team I mean he's the leader he's the alpha everybody looks towards him he's been doing it all year long everybody believes in this young man big opportunity big stage they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and defense nowadays they don't look at stats of what is the yards per rush they look at how many negative plays they can create cuz why now you look at second down man it just became very predictable for this offense nice job creating the loss on first [Applause] down now the play fake shoots it to the left he makes a catch works his way to the 41 and that is plenty to give him a first down and I love the awareness by the receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down they'll put it in play from the 41 on first [Applause] down he wants to throw unloads to the wide out and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball second [Applause] after the misfire now on second down the inside handoff continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on Midfield it's down at the 48 and a nice job by the running back finding space getting downhill making the good run great job finishing with his PS will they keep it on the ground again here on third [Applause] down a quick completion to the left looking for the first down and he's going to be just short of the first down it's going to bring up a decision for this coach one of the things I love about this defense is they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tack ble to force the punt that is so well [Applause] done a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work the Cougars offense will have its first possession of the game here comes the offense on first down he's looking to throw it got his man and he goes out of bounds after a nice pick up on that one I love early in the game getting my quarterback R coming out short passes easy completions now we're getting in a good spot line getting set on second [Applause] down from the gun they'll try to impose their will he's brought down but there's a flag on the field let's see what what the call [Applause] is just an obvious holding call there and one that just kills an offense's momentum dialing up a second down pass play makes the grab it's Martin they make the stop right there good pick up it's still short of the first down guys have the back field now it's not just run the ball downhill anym you got to be versatile I got to be able to trust you in the pass game and I got to be able to throw you the football and you can do that right there I know you're going to catch it and I can depend on you ball spoted at the 29 here they come on Third and short spits it out to the back got it in the middle it's Martin there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give him a first down and I love the angle route whether it's man or Zone if you throw it with timing and you wait for it to develop most of the time it's going to to come open great job got the quarterback seeing it hitting the running back BYU with the first and [Applause] 10 used the play fake now to throw they're trying to get to it can't find his man as he took a shot trying to deliver that football and it'll be second down and that Defender was just smothering the quarterback on that screen attempt you know the QB's taught to hold on to it to the last possible second he had no shot trying to negotiate that Defender the incompletion on first down leaves him with second and 10 from the 43 misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air got his man down the middle he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down well this offense knew coming into this game they wanted to try to attack the middle of the field in the passing game and they're able to execute the end route there passing game very effective on second down what about here on third they'll try to bully their way for the first and he's knocked down but not before moving the chains looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out BYU has this offense clicking they're getting this guy lathered up you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six I know that's not a huge game those run plays add up they make you tackle the back every single play physically you have to get some guy on the ground it takes its toll throughout a fourth quarter game after the productive first down play it's second and six out of the gun the inside K and the runner is down and so is a flag holding off holding penalties the ultimate Drive killer we'll see if it cost this offense [Applause] here the p and throw off the RPO and the defense had that one well covered just a short gain there as an offense you're always going to take completions over in completions and interceptions so the offense they're able to make that third down a little bit more manageable but honestly as they get set to snap it just about to reach the end of the quarter on Third and long you'll need to push it down field gets open down the middle and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down defense has dominated the early part of this game and the stats point that out emphatically [Music] both sides trying to find a little rhythm and efficiency and move the ball some here as we start the second quarter fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way wanted to make sure not to give them a chance for a return as it goes out of bounds offense set on first down wide receiver shows motion with Jet Sweep pass he's there to make the Stop and they threw it in reverse losing yardage on that play you got to Fight Fire with Fire you got to fight speed with speed there's a receiver with the ball out in the open field trying to get the corner but a cornerback with the same type of speed and athleticism able to make the tackle nice job and after the loss on that last one an all important second down play from the 12 he's looking to throw he tosses one high and deep down the left side and he holds it in inside the 30 and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yds down the field before he's finally stopped for the off this offense capable of exploding at any moment now they're set up inside the 30 with a first and 10 [Applause] power football with the run and he could not get boost on the Run awesome job up front by this defensive line being so good at the point of attack and eating blocks eating some double teams that allows these linebackers to run free unencumbered and get to the football got stuffed on first down it's second and [Applause] 10 now on the option now the pitch and he won't quite get there but boy after that pick up just a few inch to go for the first an array of possibilities here I think the OC would have been really happy with a small game and and an easier third down but how about the effort by the running back to get this close he he saw the first down marker tried to get to it got close enough now where it's an easy situation on third down and shoot and I got four down and the ball's on the ground and the defense jumps on him they get that turnover and it was a good run right you you had the first down you knew you had the first down I'm just take care of that football you see a lot of times those second efforts fighting for extra yards and that's when running backs seem to cough [Music] up the BYU offense headed back out to go on the attack they just didn't quite find Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal a negative play to open the Drive let's see what they've got on second and 14 it's a draw not much there the give him one to the 14 man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness this defense has kept them backed up now one more stop and they can get off the field on Third and long he's looking downfield to throw we'll take a quick break as we have reached the final two minutes of the first half BYU will bring the punt team on the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away fair catch called for and made and the offense takes the field ready to go back to work he Wast no time and comes out throwing makes the grab over the middle that's a really good tackle there giving up some size and still making the play it's amazing how fluid and potent an offense can seem when you get a great pickup on first down and the tight ends a terrific place to go tight ends nowadays are kind of like cheat CES I mean they they just know so much about right here seeing zone no one to sit it down boom positive yards nice positive play for this offense makes a catch at the 15 second and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play well it didn't take long for this guy to leave his impact in the game guys with that catch this guy's already over a 100 yards in the game and we're not even done the first half this first half of offense won't go on the Highlight Reel so far but starting to get things moving it's first and 10 he's going to pass he's got it in still on his feet quick timeout called by the offense after the play listen running backs are not just running backs anymore you're going to be a wide receiver in today's football and a great job sneaking out of the back field getting him the football letting them get some positive yards on second down wants the throw makes the grab down the middle good throwing catch takes it down to the five as the offense tries to cash in quick timeout from the offense to save precious seconds boy they' love to move this sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal they're bringing Heat and the quarterback goes down at the 11 yd line referee signals timeout is the defense wanting to make sure that they have everything just right with a big play coming now on fourth down they'll settle for a field goal try spit the upright it's good and that'll put the first points of the game on the board it's three to nothing Happ so they get the field goal now about to kick it away and you get a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things on the run from inside his own five and the coverage team able to wrestle him down BYU has it back the Cougar's ready to get into that Playbook this lead in the half you're behind you'd love to create something before the break to build momentum Jesse you've also had some miscues on offense big part of why you're losing the game right now I'd take it into halftime make my adjustments and come out ready on the second yeah I'm going to take it in halftime too B but I'm trying to put some points up right here be aggressive set the tone be like Hey listen this is what you're going to get in the second half so find something really quickly you can go to he's looking for a man on second down fires to the tight end and they'll bring him down but not before he picks up the first down that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the half time time update fellas looks like we've got a great atmosphere today in proo and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top and with that let's send it back to our broadcast team inside LVL Edwards Stadium just about set for the second half kickoff kick he'll start the return inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down the here make the stop at the 19 the BYU offense headed back out to go on the attack wants to throw on first down off the play fake and that will be incomplete man that would have been a big hitter if they could have done it but second down coming he had him open there and I know this quarterback expects to make that throw it's a tough throw cuz you again you got a couple steps on a guy that's not wide open these DBS are so fast but that is a throw that you do expect a guy like that that caliber to be able to play a little pitch and catch and make that happen how about that play to get a hand in there and force the incompletion and and that was good defense again and unfortunately we've been saying that all game long really really good defense or listen you can spit on the other side this offense is really good B third and 10 still backed up inside their own 20 this drive hasn't really gotten started from the gun wants to pass wide open downfield and works it through the 40 yd line that'll be a first down well look that wasn't a touchdown that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting to his progression BYU lines up quickly someone not clear on the snap count it'll be a false start and they'll move it back false start off the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty the give on the inside and he fights his way forward gets away from one but not much doing on that one how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions and now on second down for this [Applause] offense fires to the middle it's complete and this defense's head is spinning he gets it down to the 27 nice play design on that one you make it easy for your quarterback too because it's easy to see what's happening right in front of you over the middle of thei field you can see where Defenders are dropping you can see where the soft spots are in zone coverage and just a really nice job by the QB locating his guide making an accurate [Applause] throw on the move it's Martin delivers to stiff bar how about the patience from this sophomore to hunt that green grass you're down obviously the half you had a comp we got to come out and put points on the board and Jesse it looks like they're going to start with the ground game and I love this David too regardless of whether they're losing or they're winning come out here and try to be the most physical unit here in the second half get this run game established trying to cap this drive with a pass and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming hey man if you're going to force incomp completions when the QB's thrown to the tight end you better be physical nice job with the hit forcing that incompletion going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down they'll throw again after the incompletion snags it and he'll take this into the end zone but hang on just a second flag down let's see what this is about we'll repeat the previous down but this time the offense has 10 more yards it has to cover on second down just keeps fire caught in the back field it's Stowers he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage nice job defense you always hear people talk about tackling the catch you saw it right there there was nowhere for that receiver to go once he had possession as a result no game balls at the 24 a lot of confidence in their kicker from here but they'd love to take it off of his foot and convert the first down looking to throw he needs a chunk play makes the catch touchdown BYU and that one will give him the lead well they started with horrible field position but ended with perfect field position in the middle of the End Zone it all comes down to execution race you've got to have guys going out and doing their jobs you saw the offensive line up front there with physical skill players made it happen with the ball in their hands and the quarterback really showed command on that last lining up to add another is on for the extra point and the extra point is good and it's a four-point [Music] lead about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown to KI this [Applause] one he'll bring it back from inside the spot he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 a little bit backed up to start this drive from their own 18 yd line on the option good pick up there he gets it out for the first down I'm not sure what the quarterback saw on that one but that was a very quick decision to take off and run with it try to get his offense some positive yards it's first and 10 from the [Applause] 31 from the gun the ground game nice move to keep moving he's out of bounds after a really nice game but there is a marker on the field [Applause] holding amazing how many times times an offensive holding penalty will stall a drive we'll see if the offense can overcome it coming out on first down with the play fake fires to the big fella and an absolutely Fearless tackle giving up size still got him on the turn I think that time offensively you're just trying to take what the defense is giving you right they playing Zone coverage you got your big fella just working right over the ball it's an easy pitch and catch just take the profit and let's keep going it's now second second down after the short completion he'll try the left side they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that linebacker was a heat seeking missile and the heat that he sought was the ball carry great job great field linebackers are making all the calls in the defense and understanding when I need to come through that Gap and come through with bad intention those guys are usually 245 lbs of heit seeking missing unloads it left he's got it and they're getting it rolling with that play to the 42 yd line wow and what a great job by that quarterback finding his open receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third Downs so much in practice quarterback on the keeper they get him down and that'll be the final play of the third period big catches big plays tons of yards through three quarters for these two [Music] guys not only is the scoreboard on their side but so too is time as we open the fourth on second down wants to throw it and that's just a flat misfire not even close to his receiver another incompletion and I've said that a lot and these teams are just struggling I mean the offense just doesn't know what to do nothing's working ground game Throw game it's kind of been a rock fight on both sides after the second down misfire looking at a third and eight he's looking looking to throw they've got the screen set up and boy is he close to that first down maybe just a couple of Ines short it's a nice effort by the running back but in that third and long situation it just too much work for that running back to convert that third down really nice job got to give the defense credit they surrounded him got him to the ground and here we go down a score they'll go for it on fourth down on the option he'll pitch it at the 20 he's got space and he caught that pitch and stride and was Off to the Races a big gain and a first down for this offense they needed less than a yard didn't hesitate didn't think about the field goal probably a little long for that but they get the first down and now that you've got it in a fresh set of downs look at where they are in the field you're sort of in that Fringe area there are a lot of coaches that like to take shots at this specific juncture of the field let's see what the offense does here and they pick up just a few on that completion they were able to get the ball to the running back in space but that space just evaporated and a great job by the defense man it's tough to get those guys on the ground they're so used to being having the football as running backs and making plays and being Dynamic so usually one guy not going to get him to the ground you want many guys swarm into the football trying to get that elusive guy on the ground he bullies his way all the way down to the 5 yd line I think they called that knowing they weren't going to hit a home run so why would you call it that well you call it so third down becomes an easier down it's not third and long where I have to pass the football now all options on the table the terrain gets rough this deep in the Red Zone third down they can pick up the first without scoring pressure coming and the heat will get home and the quarterback goes down at the 17 and that's a great job by the defense not letting that bird out of the cage when you can run like this guy can you got to keep the edge did a great job he went backwards retreated gave up some ground that didn't give up the outside got the sack on the [Applause] play so on fourth down here comes the field goal kicker in a huge spot it is good and that's massive all the pressure on your defense now you've made the field goal you got to get the ball back you need one more kick that's what you need and so the defense has to be ready to take the field right now play with intensity play with energy and get it back to the offense quickly [Music] after putting up a three spot the kickoff unit set to go and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 BYU has it back the Cougars ready to get into that Playbook wants to throw on first down unloads to the right and it's incomplete but the penalty flag has fallen in the holding Zone let's see what the call is that penalty moves the ball back 10 yds will replay the down here comes the biggest drive for the defense desperate to get a stop throwing right and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down brings up second down [Music] couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it [Applause] again they'll run as to keep this clock grinding One Step WRA twep squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground this is a big pressure moment for the offense too because they've got the lead but it's now third down on their own side of the field they would love nothing more than to be able to convert this stay on the field keep bleeding the clock but the defense I'd expect them to bring pressure here trying to force the ball out of the QB's hands quickly defense trying to keep this offense from getting a line on who to block big third down play here if they get a stop you'll see an immediate timeout and the defense is swarming to keep him from getting to the first down quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense looks as if BYU will have to punt it away he'll call for the fair catch here Bunch formation trying to confuse the secondary they'll start this drive with a pass good timing on the quick out they make the stop after the catch and still some work to do to pick up that first down you just got the feeling this defense is going to make it hard on them right they've got the lead it's late and they're going to try to tackle everybody in bounds offense is going to have to really work for this and be smart you got to attack the sidelines you got to throw first downs you got to keep this thing moving vertically down the field caught on the outside it's Williamson and he wisely gets out of bounds the clock can be the enemy right now and this offense needs to get some points where's the def on that last play it's a two-minute situation you got the guy making the catch in the middle of the field you've got to tackle him in bounds and keep this clock moving somehow they were able to let him get outside to stop the clock that just can't happen throws to the wide out oh what a grab by the defense and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception not only a great play but tremendous discipline by this sophomore to make the pick [Music] movement from the linebackers trying to mess with the offensive line [Applause] assignments movement here from the tight end they'll give it to the back bows through the defense he's brought down but there's a flag on the play let's see if it stands hold [Applause] it they say you could call holding on every play well they did on that one give to the back and they'll stop him after a minimal pick up the defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense the how about the job by this defense today they knew what they were getting into really good running back we talked to them this week it was the main focus point of this offense stopping the Run game stopping the Run game boy have they showed up and showed out and answered that challenge time out called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible this is a third and long and off from the shotgun and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop you got to give this defense credit because they have bottled this guy up all game long he's one of the best running backs in allive college football everybody was expecting him to have a big one today don't tell that to this defense though they've played with great effort they've gotten to the football and they have been able to shut him down and they'll get him down after the return at the 27 yd line remember all they have to do is get it close enough for a field goal here they'll come out on this drive and let it rip and a little too much adrenaline on that throw never gave his receiver a chance got to get everybody lined up quickly time winding away and they've got to push the ball down the field fires to the wide out how about getting the foot down on that throw for the big completion what a great individual effort here in this two-minute situation he makes the catch in the middle of the field he knows he's got to find a way to stop the clock the only way to do that is to get out of bounds he uses his speed and his vision and he's able to elude the defense to save some time no time to waste here they've got to get set and pick up chunk yardage trying to get rid of it and they can't make the connection and it could get worse a penalty flag on the field and it's in the holding Zone let's get the call just an obvious holding call there and one that just kills an offens momentum here's a snap ready to cut one loose a deep throw as the clock winds down and they couldn't connect on the Deep shot let's see if things get worse there's a flag on the field which way is this going to [Applause] go this defense happy with how that last play turned out to be able to climb the penalty [Music] [Music]
