Dr Darion joins us again now with a question our viewers are asking and it is what items should I bring with me to make my first chemotherap chemotherapy appointment more comfortable know this is something I've learned one of my first clinical experiences in medical school and in my training was working on chemotherapy out patients who were dealing with chemotherapy and going back home and so they gave me these tips on what they often bring and included often things like moisturizer hand lotion lip balm comfortable clothing also reading material obviously games if you can and then I thought this was interesting Ginger and peppermint candies because that can help to decrease your dry mouth that you might have from the medication also sometimes you can develop a metallic taste and also most importantly a friend an advocate that can talk to you or if you can't find one pull aside a medical student like one patient did me and taught me all of these tricks that's very cool and your prescription for wellness it's inspired by a book called biscoitos This is a cookie that is the state cookie of New Mexico written by one of our residents here at ABC meduni uh Aditi Cully and the book is inspired supposed to teach uh young kids about how to deal with the rare diagnosis it's about a grandmother and her grandson and at the end there is a recipe I eat anything with cinnamon in it and so it's one of the reasons that I was attracted to it but I think it's a great moment to open up conversations and to increase awareness my prescription today is inspired by this it's inspired to help people understand what to do if you get diagnosed with a rare condition the first thing you can do is number one join in advocacy groups groups like Nord or the National Alliance on rare diseases can help you find patient Assistance programs that can assist you with things like medication testing and even caregivers Support also search for federal educational resources like guard genetic and rare diseases information center it's supported by the NIH for the National Institute of Health and you can help it can help you get up-to-date facts and figures about rare diseases and then also check with scientific organizations for new drug developments and clinical trials searching online at CL clinicaltrials.gov for example or asking your provider to give you more information on ongoing studies that may help you find more options for treatment on your condition and I love the book it's a great book and this cookie is delicious I eat anything with cinnamon in it so yes okay yes to cookies good to know yes to cookies and we love to hear from you so hit us up on Instagram with all of your medical questions that's ABC gma3
