3,000 passing yards the ninth most in a single forom season now he's back looking to lead the Rams to new heights forom boasted the second best offense and defense in the conference last year but it didn't translate to the standings as the Rams finished fifth in The Patriot league with a disappointing two and4 Conference record a new season brings new opportunities Chief among them a chance to bring home their first Patriot league title since 2014 and they'll dive right into the deep end traveling to Ohio to take on an intimidating FBS foe in Bowling Green what better way to set the tone for a brand new year than by taking on one of the best teams in the Mac it's forom and Bowling Green Thursday night under the lights the 2024 season starts now on W fuv Sports you can stop looking at the calendar forom football is back the Rams travel to Ohio to take on Bowling Green in their one and only FBS opponent of the 2024 season what's up everybody Lou Orlando alongside Evan Harkin and on behalf of our entire wfuv crew we're thrilled to bring you for football on 90.7 FM this season having the Rams come into this season ranked third in The Patriot League preseason poll they've got their eyes on their first conference title and 10 seasons and perhaps a little extra motivation after a disappointing 2023 season absolutely Lot number two in offense and defense statistically last year but number five in the standings Joe conin gy cot and Nile Perkins all told us they have to focus on the little things this year they have to play whistle to whistle because it's about the whole game it's about every little aspect of it not just the talent because they've shown they have that they need to put it all together Lou week one in college football we've got an exciting matchup right here at dght L Perry Stadium we're going to get you all set up for it but before we do Evan and I talk to head coach Joe conin Lou Orlando Evan Harkin with head coach Joe conin coach you're not only going up against a a talented Bowling Green Team this is a team that has the six most seniors in the entire nation so they're one of the best teams in the mac and their experience what are the challenges of both of those things yeah I mean I think uh they're a very well coached team you know there's not a lot of weaknesses offense defense special teams um they do a great job running their stuff they're going to they challenge you with motion on offense um lot of Gap scheme they're going to try to get the ball out on the perimeter um defensively they're multiple they play hard up front they're very good at the third level um you know they come downhill backers play hard so uh it's definitely going to be a challenge you got to play a pretty clean game against these guys you know a lot of Veteran experience a lot of guys played a lot of football so um you know it's just just you have to play well and and trust you guys play hard and take care of the football and if you do that you may have a chance along with having young guys playing key roles at most position groups you also have experienced seniors and even grad students at pretty much every position as well how have these older guys impacted the Young Guns development this Camp yeah I mean I think we have we've had really good leadership um you see guys like Conway n Perkins uh even Oz you know was a sophomore but a guy who's played a lot of football taking these guys on under their wings you know Mike Courtney has been great Ryan Joyce on offense um you know CJ obviously you know guys that have been in the system for a while um that understand you know how we do things you know they've been they've been uh integral and bringing these guys along and we've been very fortunate it's a really good recruiting class um so you know these guys are talented uh and they love the game so they've been you know they've been like sponges and uh have have absorbed everything that uh the upper class you know no one really came in with an ego or anything like that so they want to learn and and they understand these guys have have done it at a high level and and they want to learn everything they can from that I I want to touch on that that younger group a little bit because you have freshman that are coming in at Major positions and major positions that you lost some of your All Conference players in the last years like what have you seen from these guys through Camp their development you already said they're like sponges yeah I mean jayen to his crowd at it you know first summer workout he came in a little heavy and uh you know I walked up to him and I said hey man whatever James Conway does you should do and uh to his credit he did it and um he kind of follows him around and and stays after with him and um has modeled himself after that type and yeah I mean you walk into this program as a as a wide receiver or linebacker you know there's automatically big shoes to Phil going you going back to Ryan and even Glenn Cunningham through Jimmy and now Jaylen and Mike Courtney and Mike's guy who does everything right on and off the field um same thing at wide receiver you know you're you're following in the footsteps of guys like Kei MJ you know ftis uh gar Cody um Mai so great thing is you know you're able to hang on to G Cody for his six Mai for his fifth so you have a lot of great leadership out of those guys and uh you know the young guys to their credit you know they they want to learn they're they're working hard they're trying to play fast you know they make mistakes but everyone does um so uh it's it's been fun to watch their development your new outside linebacker coach Ryan greeing and I've talked to a bunch of guys that said he's a genius when they were watching film with him he helped them develop and a couple days ago you called him a natural teacher what makes him a natural teacher well he's confident he knows he knows the subject matter and and just similar to when he was a player he's he's very willing to give up himself um understands the standard holds his guys to the standard without losing his cool um and he's always the same he's always who he is you know there's never a day where Ryan's not Ryan and uh you know so the those guys understand the standard they understand what he expects and uh you know Mike Horton he's playing the best football uh he's ever played and Ryan's doing a good job of developing the young guys of his position so it's been fun to watch and make the transition CJ and Garrett have both mentioned how important timing is and chemistry in this offense have you seen the passing game Elevate to another level this camp now that CJ's here in year two yeah certainly I mean he's certainly much more comfortable um in Camp there's a noticeable difference in this Camp than last in terms of uh his comfort level and credit to not just CJ Jack Capaldi um Jack and CJ both I thought were were excellent this camp in terms of getting the ball out making reads staying calm uh understanding where a guys should be so uh we feel very very uh good about the one and two quarterback position coach thanks a lot for the time good luck thank you the Rams return after a 6 and5 2023 season they're looking to reach New Heights and Evan they've certainly out the talent to do so eight players named to the preseason All Conference team that's the second most in the Patriot League shy of only Lafayette who won the conference title last year they've got the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in the preseason in match a warski they've got the Phil steel preseason offensive player of the year and CJ Montes you know a thing or two because you've seen a thing or two as a member of these very Rams from 2020 to 2022 what do you see in this group well this team never lacks Talent Lou Joe conin is the first to tell them every year when the preseason Awards come out that they don't mean anything to him the postseason Awards the Patriot league title that they haven't been able to reach yet is what this team wants they know they have talent they have had Talent since I was there in 2020 could never get it done but Joe conin said this team seemed a lot hungrier to him Lou he was saying These Guys these grad students that came back are doing it for a purpose for a reason they want to reach New Heights that they haven't before and they'll be facing a Bowling Green team that's coming off a seven- six season but they went 5 and three in conference they earned their second straight Bowl and that's a really impressive thing when you think about where this program was when head coach Scott leer took them over they've got you can make a case the best tied end in all of college football Harold Fanon Jr was ranked as the best college football tight end last year by PFF and they've got a great running game and ter on Stewart a great o line a fantastic defense for's got their work cut out for them yeah coach Leer's done a great job and you hit it right on the nose L it starts up front there is four returning o line starters who started every single game at their respective position last season it starts in the trenches for this Bowling Green Team and it doesn't end there it goes into the backfield with terion Stewart a guy who 6.3 yards per carry was first in Bowling Green history last season so these guys can Pound The Rock and they're well coached Forum won the toss at Midfield they elected to defer so it will be the forom defense that heads out there first and again they're going to have a tough task against this run game of bowling green and it's you look at the Mac there's not electric passing really anywhere and Bowling Green 1888 passing yards a game last season that was actually middle of the pack for's obviously team that likes to throw the rock but again when you have that o line when you have a dynamic back like teron Stewart and make no mistake they've got an excellent quarterback that's been the FBS for forever they've got a talented group of wide receivers and Auburn transfer so this is a forom defense that's going to have to play clean football and make stops if they want to come up with another win against an FBS Foe and it starts up front for the Rams the same way it starts up front for Bowling Green this defensive line led by matori needs to have a big green big game today Bowling Green Run heavy they feature all these really good o linemen that's their MO matori and the boys are going to have to get back back there and cause some distractions cause some disruption if foron wants to stay in this game defensively forom will be kicking left to right they've got maroon helmets all white jerseys black and white black and maroon stripes down the side for Bowling Green maroon tops or excuse me orange tops brown pants and red helmets it will be the freshman bendit Anderson to kick things away it's been 284 days and 18 hours since the last forom football kickoff now the waiting is over moments away Henderson walks up puts total leather the 2024 for football season has begun kick reaches the back of the end zone taken out by pakis along the near side pakis breaks a tackle he's loose past the 40 one man left to beat he's still going all the way up the sideline no one's going to stop him how about this start for Bowling Green Justin pages 100 yards for the kick return touchdown and what a start for the Falcons this place is pumping right now and they should be that's exactly how you want to start the game if you're Bowling Green assert some dominance show that you came out here to play from the start of the first whistle for Bennett Henderson that's a tough spot getting left back there to make an open field tackle in your first ever college football kickoff against an FBS opponent and a really good returner not where the Rams want to be exactly where Bowling Green wants to be over here kicking themselves an extra point Justin pgee the Tennessee Tech transfer from the F FCS taking over lead kick Ron dirties and my goodness Evan for this forom team that wanted to come out playing clean football hard to think of a more deflating start than that the extra point from Jackson clether no good so forom will only face a six-point deficit but a six-point deficit in an instant 12 seconds pass on the clock and the Falcons lead six nothing yeah the Falcons with a really good kick return there but you want to focus on the end of that Jackson clether that's his first ever extra point attempt in college football he was mainly a kickoff guy last year did not play place kicker position for them so you really want to capitalize on the end of that drive if you're the Rams the game is not over we saw them fall 17 to nothing against Buffalo their last FBS opponent sometimes you have to claw back they've shown they've done it it starts here yeah you think back to that Buffalo game you're right Forman fac a 17 nothing deficit early they ended up storming back got within three by the end of the half and had a really strong second half to take down buffalo another Mac opponent 40 to 37 albeit Buffalo not quite to the level that Bowling Green is Bowling Green picked third in the Mac preseason poll and depending on who you listen to they've got a real good shot at maybe coming away with the conference title here this is an excellent team this is an excellent defense they led the nation in takeaways with 28 so now we're going to look at this forom offense and already pressure building on their shoulders going be more pressure there's pressure coming on the kickoff right here Mason Hatfield and KJ Reed back there to return excuse me that's going to be noden Tracy back there returning for the Rams two Young Guns hoping to make a big impact right here on a huge play well this will be Zack long who will do the kickoff duties and fitting to the name he's got quite the powerful leg 70 touchbacks last year with the FBS team Troy long charges and Boots it towards the near side Hatfield will let it bounce out of bounds and it bounced at the one and took a sideways left turn and that will be a penalty going against Bowling Green and field position at the 35 for forom so I guess maybe things turning their way quickly very smart play there by Mason Hatfield he could have got that ball over on the hatch marks over here decided to let it roll out of bounds smart giving the Rams a penalty better field position that's what they have to do L they have to stay inside their head stay focused don't let all this commotion everything that's going going on get inside of the things you've been doing all week the planning you've been doing all week you got to execute no matter what happens forom returns eight of 11 starters on both sides but none more important than their quarterback CJ Montes he's an open for this first and 10 set luid motions into the backfield to his left 1448 into the first quarter they give up the middle of leage he has a couple tries to bounce outside but tackled down a couple yards shy of the 40 at the 38 yeah there was a hole there for Julius Le didn't see it right away went into the wrong one tries to bounce back into the right one in between Ryan Joyce and Cooper lefon The Freshman right there at right tackle hoping to get some better runs out here out of a very good running back luid ran for over a thousand yards last season you still feel like the ceiling's higher the give once again up the gut to Lage he's met by that line tries to turn forward for a couple forward motion has him stopped just past the 40 and we've got about third and five here with 1408 to play and that's senior captain anthon Hawkins the nose tackle over here for Bowling Green not letting anything come up the middle that's the mo of this team they want to play really good defense and beat you in the Run game third down and four they need the 45 for the first Montes looks right facing pressure and he's going to be taken down at the 35 swarmed by that Bowling Green defense it's the Anthony or it's Anthony Hawkins that comes away with the sack had the tackle on second down the sack on third a three and out for forom on their first drive over a 100 tackles in this man's Bowling Green career you can add two to that list right now after that first drive an excellent player showing you why he deserves to be a captain on the field right now for's going to be out here to punt Haslet stands at his own 20 he's got quite the leg a flag flies on the snap false start going against forom the kicking team and penalties were quite the issue for forom last year they led the Patriot league and penalties they've been an emphasis for afford them all throughout Camp every player every coach has harped on it and early penalty here that will move Haslet back to the 15 feels like a bit of a frazzled Panic penalty there it makes sense there's a lot of Aroma coming that forom should be panicking this situation you have to say stay composed pis stands at the 29 on his side of the field has at the 15 gets the punt away right down the middle this will send pagis back to the 23 Along The Far Side a fair Catch and now we'll get our first look at Conor baslac and this Bowling Green offense I shouldn't get ahead of myself we got a media time out so with that we'll go to our first break a kick return touchdown by Justin PES has the bowling gon Falcons up 6 nothing with 1259 left in the first quarter you're listening to for football on wfuv sports what's up everyone I'm Evan Harkin your New York Jets beat reporter for the 2024 season stay up to date with all things white and green from MetLife Stadium from Aaron Rogers touchdowns to S Garder interceptions I've got you covered so join me and Gang Green on Twitter at evarin and stay locked in with the js on wfuv your home for nework York Sports back from the doyon Ohio Lou Orlando Evan Harkin it's for football on 90.7 FM the Rams Trail 6 nothing just two minutes into this game the kick return touchdown 100 yards but Justin PES has the Falcons up early and when we return it'll be the Falcons taking over from the their own 22 they're led by Connor baslac at quarterback returning for his sixth season in the FBS and as he makes the start he's had at least one start in all of his six seasons this is a veteran quarterback this is a veteran group that has 32 seniors the sixth milth in the nation yeah baslac the definition of a field General this guy played for Missouri played for Indiana like L said has played all over only 12 touchdowns and 1,953 yards last year but he can give you the veteran presence you need out of a quarterback he's leading the team started out in Missouri was the SEC co-rookie of the year then went to Indiana became the first QB to throw for over 300 yards in his debut joining Antoine and oel and now he's joined the Bowling Green falc and taking over starting duties for the last two seasons picked second Team all Ma and again we talked about terion Stewart who is up for seemingly every major award that you can think of the Maxwell award the Walter Camp award both go to the best overall player in football so we're talking about the big big names there and then you got Harold Fannon Jr who's up for the tight end award in college football Alex waler one of the best tight ends in the nation this is a team that is stacked in a lot of different positions and they do everything Harold fan and junor the Bowling Green coaches will tell you loves to block this is a guy that's been on the preseason all ma list for about three years he's a guy that's third and single season receiving at Bowling Green with 623 yards last year still loves to block and get involved B lack in the gun gives to Stewart Wright looking for that edge works up past the 20 tackled down at the 25 a gain of five for terion Stewart a little snap back to reality for the forom Rams there finally a normal football play not just a huge touchdown I'll place it at the 25 yd line two receiver two tight end set to start for Bowling Green it's basc under Center the give on the round working up past the 30 stood up around the 34 a strong opening carry for rakem Smith to transfer from Delaware State yeah this offensive line is pushing along early defensive line for forum is going to have to give a lot more resistance you can't leave it on the DBS and that third level to make open field tackles all game long that's enough for the first down as they get to their own 36 two receivers in the formation two running backs on First and 10 this they give to steart up the middle hit at the line of scrimmage Falls forward for a few more now he's swarmed around the 38 yd line that's what you need in white and maroon heads around the ball a lot of heads around the ball like I said terion Stewart not the type of guy that one person can be expected to tackle every play Bowling Green averaged over 140 rushing yards a game last season Fannon comes across in motion he's now in the far slot baslac the near side screen for for Fannon Jr works up to the 40 yd line still going as he breaks a tackle lunges forward at the 44 yd line two yard short of the first and Fanon Jr showing you why he's second in single season receiving touchdowns by a tight end at this school six of those they are going to get this guy the rock all season long doing it early here tonight lead tight ends in receiving yards and touchdowns with 623 yards six touchdowns third and two the Rams looking to get off the field with 11 even to play in the first baslac under Center gives to Stewart up the B Gap picks up the first down carrying a Defender up to the 50 finally brought down in opposing territory Mike Courtney able to knock him down although a positive play there for Bowling Green a very good tackle by Mike Courtney the senior grad student Joe conin told us earlier today this guy's playing the best football of his life seeing it here tonight for got chori on the Left End lined up with waler the best o lineman on this Bowling Green Team trips right baslac drops back throws right he's got Fanon wide open on the out route UPS past the 40 hurles Alex keer and knocked out of bounds past the 35 that did not look like a tight end who loves to block there L going up and over very receiver esque as Harold fan J is the Rams with good pressure there but seems like everybody was open downfield to early receptions for H Fannon Jr and the Bowling Green Falcons inside the opposing 35 Zer across two receivers on the far side this they give to Patterson breaks one tackle still going inside the 20 ruled down at the 20 exactly the first Carry for jyon Patterson the senior running back and another first down Bowling Green right now moving with ease yeah Bowling Green letting the Rams know they don't only have to watch out for Stewart It's Patterson as well 982 yards an impact player after Stewart got hurt last season two receivers out right one out left they give to Patterson Cuts back far side and this time the defense containment a helmet flies off after the twoy gain from Patterson big stop there by Colby Spencer the 64 junr from penbook Penbrook Mass they're going to need everybody to step up on this defensive line and work as a unit to help push along get some pressure in that back field Bowling Green at the opposing 17 a second and seven snap baslac goes under Center he's got Stewart to his left instead pitches back on the end of round turning up inside the 10 brought down at the 5 yd line just for defense going to have to send some extra players the four down lineman even five not enough to get pressure to disrupt the Back Field at all this o line having their Way Bowling Green now inside the 10 first and goal from the seven two receiver two tied end set baslac gives left for Stewart the outside edge stiff arms the defender Forks up and into the end zone touchdown Bowling Green with 820 to play Bowling Green gets their second touchdown of the game and it's Terry Stewart punching in the score a mades touchdown there by terion Stewart looking like a human joystick making three Rams Defenders not only miss but look very silly on his way for that 5 yard punch in terion Stewart and this run game we thought it might be a problem for forom and they had hats to the football there it didn't seem to matter when you have hats to the football you have to still tackle and this forom defense showing early on that they really can't do that especially against the big players here's clether missed his first time on the second attempt through the uprights the first extra point in the career of the sophomore Jackson Cleaver the falc up 13 to nothing with 820 to play in the first quarter this is a nightmare start for forom but not a start that they shouldn't have expected at all I'm sure Joe conin members of this coaching staff were preaching to the team Lou that we might go down early we're away against an FBS opponent a very good Mac team there's a good chance we have to claw back into this game we have to stay focused stay composed and execute the Falcons lead 13 nothing and I think maybe eerily similar to how that Buffalo game started where when you look at that first quarter in the way fora went down early it felt like they had no chance to come back in that game and you look at that first offensive drive for the Falcons moving the ball with Bill finding Fannon in the pass game running the ball with Stewart It's the players we highlighted and really for them had no answer for it no answer and the answer they had for the Buffalo game that they're going to need here is turn turn l a blocked pun two Force fumbles that's what gave them a little bit of momentum when they were down so bad allowed them room open the door for them to claw back into that game they're going to need to make something happen with some grit cause some takeaways cause some turnovers the Falcons lead 13 nothing 820 to play in our first quarter you're listening to forom football in wfuv sports how's it going everyone will Talent here your New York Giants beat reporter for the 2024 season follow alongside me at talentor will on X to catch all of the updates on your New York football Giants from MetLife Stadium with rookie sensation Malik neighbors and big free agent acquisition Brian Burns wfuv Sports is the place for big blue coverage wfuv your home home for New York Sports Bowling Green 6931 and5 in home openers and they have got an ABS abolutely packed crowd in the stands across from us they're calling it orange wave night and every single person across from us Evan absolutely decked out in Orange they've been loud they've had a lot to cheer for with the Falcons up 13 nothing 820 left in the first quarter it is rowdy here Lou as it deserves to be this is where the Falcons wanted to be as soon as this game started the Rams CJ Montes is over here shaking his head up and down dancing a little bit I kind of like it showing he's composed he's not letting this pressure get to him he needs to take that and bring it into the offense let them know as their team captain guys this is our game to win and lose still Montes hadn't hasn't had a chance to attempt to pass yet the Rams handed it to luf twice then look to pass on third down Montes was torn down by Anthony Hawkins so a three and out for the Rams and again it's been momentum completely on the side of Bowling Green they open the game with 100 yard kick return touchdown then they force a three and out for for him offensively then they go down the field 77 yards or 73 yards and punch home the touchdown with terion Stewart forum's fwell against FBS opponents and the Mac they've got three wins against the FBS dating back to 2013 their last few games against the Mac obviously upset Buffalo last year then you look the year before in a shootout with Ohio 5952 they narrowly lose that one k away from long Hatfield on the near side up past the 15 looking to work towards the middle of the field he's flipped over around the 23 and a flag flies on that hit and that could be another special teams penalty for Bowling Green interesting to see what this will be going to be a huge penalty either way here a decent return there by Hatfield getting to around the 25 before the flags fly with MJ Wright the sixth all-time leading receiver in forom history departing after 5 years on the program it's Mason Hatfield taking over primary kick return to duties and the penalty will go against forom holding that will work it back Hai didn't look too bad on that return and outside of some ball security issues this is a kid that has a lot of explosiveness that will be looking over looking to take over for MJ wri who is as explosive as they get and I think if you were to build a kick returner or punt returner in a lab you might build Mason Hatfield 5'7 180 lbs small but very Shifty allows himself to hide behind those bigger blockers and weave in and out of 814 left in the first quarter of the Rams Trail by 13 first and 10 from their own 15 yd line trip set out left play action montz looking right going deep down the field for Garett Cody incomplete just a step ahead of him and in coverage that was Jordan Oken one of the best cornerbacks in the mac and you have to think he's going to be shadowing gar Cody today 100% you want to follow number seven around the field the ram showing when they're in trouble that's the guy they want to go to early I was about to say Lou it starts with a first down I guess that's not where the Rams Head are at they want a touchdown second down and 10 from the same spot this time two receivers either side Montes looks right the Quick Pass to Cody at the 20 yd line he'll take himself to the ground with a dive picks up a few more and they'll be a couple yards short of the first down after that eight- y grab from Cody crucial third down here it would be a major play to move the chains finally get into that flow they'll call it third down and one 748 and taking thear toage picks up the first down and drives the shoulder into the stomach of CJ Brown the safety for Bowling Green moves the chains with forum's first first down of the game a big boy run by a big guy in Julius LGE 6' 210 the Houston Texas product putting the helmet and shoulder down and getting through for the first down first and 10 from the 29 Montes in the gun lers to his left 720 left to go in the first quarter Rams looking to get put together a solid drive a flag flies after a little bit of a Flinch on the line forom immediately points toward Bowling Green and we'll see what the refs decide off sides on the defense go against number 55 Evan Branch hannes the defensive lineman great game plan there they work a different Cadence try to get the defense off sides put the pressure on them forom likes to work quick they didn't fa so now first and five from the 34 clock ticks under seven minutes in the first wide receiver Stacks either side just three on the line for Bowling Green here they give to luff stutters now works up gets up to the 35 driven back in the scrum forward motion has him down at the 36 a late flag flies that scrum get a little physical and see if we've got an unnecessary roughness here pushing after the whistle that looks like it's going to be an unnecessary roughness against Bowling Green that's unnecessary roughness against dear Kelly so Bowling Green helping out forom a little bit with some penalties first the off sides now an unnecessary roughness and that will take forom into Bowling Green territory at the opposing 48 the Falcons are focused on not committing penalties they want to play a clean game and hope that their talent can Prevail and win them this one their coach Scott ler said they need to play a clean game so they need to eat the clock they're scared or they're wary of this forom offense first and 10 from the opposing 48 three receiver tight end set the give to luid off left tackle a burst of speed carrying Defenders up to the 30 yd line nearly a 20 yd run and joyous luid in a Flash takes it to the 30 luid a guy who had FBS offers coming at a high school show and he can pound with these big boys up in the FBS running through multiple there that's the best offensive play for them seen so far Montes play action looks middle steps up swarmed and he's taken down at the 35 once again pressure coming this is Anthony Hawkins once again his second sack of the ball game loss of five Cody Johnson as a center Ryan Joyce with a little bit of trouble there with Anthony Hawkins this offensive line is going to have to adjust to Hawkins because he's been destroying this game so far 535 to go in the first forom looking for their first score of the game second and 15 from the 35 they need the 20 for the first Bowling Green showing a little bit of blitch off the Eds with Miles Bradley Here Comes Bradley the give to luid right side he's tackled by Bradley at the 35 and Bradley looked like he was going to Blitz off the edge instead ran up the middle right into the lane of Lage this defensive line showing their muscle early some good pulls there by the forom Rams on the offensive line got to those blocks but the guys they left open flying into the back field to make tackles from behind bom at the 35 outside of the range of the Freshman Bennett Henderson so they'll need to pick up at least five yards to get into field goal distance third and 15 442 in taking as Montes steps up to adjust the play Bowling Green sends a blitz Montes in the gun facing pressure brought down at the 45 the blitz comes through once again ay McGary blitzing from the linebacker spot takes down Montes the third sack of the game for Bowling Green and Montes specifically adjusted that play at the line to pick him up told the offense line could see that he was blitzing gets right through the offensive lineman that was put against him gets right to Montes the Rams need to keep Montes off the ground if they want to have a chance offensively already three sacks that was a problem in their season opener last year against Albany Albany sacked Montes eight times and would ended up being a blowout Victory to start the 2023 season Haslet stands at his own 44 looking to trap Bowling Green inside the 20 this one at the five caught by Pages the fair Catch and Bowling Green will be trapped inside their own 10 great punt there by Will haset putting it on the 5 yd line not too far going into the end zone causing a Touchback first in the Patriot league in average yards per punt with 42 and a half last year and the preseason All-American second team really good punter in will Haslett for them held off the scoreboard with 347 left to go in the first they Trail 13 nothing from Dy Perry Stadium here listening to forom football on 90.7 [Music] FM hey sports fans it's Bobby C I'm the sports director here at wfuv from live broadcasts of forom Athletics to coverage of all the week 90.7 FM is the home of wfuv sports the start of the forom football season Lou Orlando Evan Harkin here for wfuv the Rams Trail 13 nothing 347 left to go in the first Scott ler ahead of this game talked about the forom offense said they're really unique we're going to have to play really well on defense and also we're going to have to control the clock we have to keep this offense off the field the forom offense hasn't beat them and that's thanks to this defense for the most part has kept them off the field in the early going and for the most part it's thanks to Anthony Hawkins and this defensive line if you're the offensive coordinator for forom you're thinking maybe some screen passes you got to get the timing a little different the offensive line versus the defensive line straight up just is not working at all right now and it's putting a big strain on CJ and the offense they look back to the Bowling Green offense who will be taking over from their own seven yd line and baslac only had to attempt two passes connected on both to Harold Fanon junr two y two receptions for 36 yards it was a lot of the Run game terion Stewart four carries 12 yards in a touchdown they got Patterson involved they got pagis involved they even got their wide receiver rakeim Smith involved and again you have to wonder against a smaller forom team if they're going to look to shove them back on the line and run the ball down their throat well you said earlier Lou they're looking to control the clock this game the way you do that is to run the ball down the team other team's throat I expect them to keep that same game plan going into here if you're forom you have to send some extra players some blitzers you're not getting it done with four or five men against this really big offensive line two receiver two tight end set for Bowling Green starting at their own seven pis comes across in motion to give up the middle to Stewart has a gap Barletta misses on the tackle jorski flies in in a swarm takes Stuart down at the 13 a massive hole there for terion Stewart as he's been seeing all game long like I said these Rams have to come up and play in those gaps they can't sit back any longer as they have the entire first quarter we've seen marching down the field from the Falcons baslac under Center second and four 320 to go in the first Stewart the tail back once again play action baslac looking to throw goes short for pagis and the throw a little low pagis Dives unable to come up with it that sets up third down and four forom showing what can happen when you have have some pressure matcha warski a guy who I was just going to point to and say might have to step up and show some pressure as the Patriot League preseason defensive player of the year does it right there forces a huge incompletion third down here third down and four as they go three receivers here Bowling Green does as they bring in Finn Hogan no Malcolm Johnson so far Bowling Green coach Scott leer said they're banged up baslac looking to throw goes middle for Harold Fanon Jr breaks loose Midfield finally brought down at his own 45 yd line but a big game that picks up the first down and gets the the Falcons close to Midfield and way too much time in the pocket there for quarterback Conor baslac he's going to pick apart this zone defense all game long if they're not up in his face at some point the Auburn transfer Malcolm Johnson Jr enters the game on the near side two receiver two tight end set Johnson motions to the near SL baslac in the gun gives to Patterson picks up a couple he's whipped around and thrown down by kby Spencer a blitz there coming from forom and it works well Jackson barleta flying in as soon as a snap happens he blows up the Gap where the play was supposed to go expect to see more of that from this forom offense trying everything they can to disrupt plays in the back field Jackson boreta stepping into a larger roll the linebacker with Mark prto transferring to NIU in the Mac three receivers set on the left side near side screen for Malcolm Johnson his first reception of the game spins up to the opposing 45 and this is going to be awfully close they'll say yes he has the first down move the chains big tackle there from Jaylen Dawson despite the first down a guy who Joe Conlin told to do exactly what James Conway does and he does that right there with the tackle in the middle of the open field The Freshman Jaylen Dawson from goodier Arizona stepping into a major role in this defense as a first year player baslac under Center no one behind him here comes pagis in motion fakes the pitch back to him looking to throw deep down the field throws left it's Fon again pass the 30 shoves a Defender to the ground brought down shy of the 20 but he de some punishment to nyall Perkins right there he dealt some punishment for sure and so as this offensive line all quarter long baslac could have put a recliner back there in the back field and then thrown the ball after he had some coffee in it has all day a minute eight to go in this first quarter as the clock ticks Fannon will take a break first down and 10 from their opposing 24 baslac under Center pagis in motion again fakes the pitch gives it to Stewart running left shuffles by three Defenders works up breaks another tackle gets inside the 15 it's Andrew Osman that finally takes him down but not before another first down and Bowling Green in the Red Zone yeah it's just been the same pattern of running the ball down down forom throat no matter what blitzers they send no matter if there's a guy at the line of scrimmage there to tackle doesn't seem to be working so far the Falcons to Elite in the open field 25 seconds ticking on our first quarter Bas lack in the gun the Falcons have maybe one more snap before quarters close first and 10 from the 13 and now whistles timeout Bowling Green so they'll take a little bit of time that's their first of the game with 14 seconds left left maybe they'll think about taking an end zone shot here before the end of the quarter you have to think they're cooking something up Lou a weird spot to take a time out when the quarter would have ended it you could have had this huddle in 14 seconds if you're the forom defensive coordinators must be thinking they're planning something a specific play here that they saw would work well against the formation for them lined up in defensively you wonder if that's to get Fannon Jr back in the game after that big reception that flipped the field he came out for a play that time out I think you expect to see their best receiver back out there best receiver and one of their best run blockers as well so you really don't know what they're going to do when Harold Fon jun's on the field that's how dangerous he can be oh Fannon Jr will head to the sideline for this play so that that shows me trying to be the analyst here first and 10 from the opposing 13 14 seconds left wide receivers in a trips right it's Patterson to the left of Lucian Anderson the second Anderson takes the snap running left left QB power into the end zone broke a tackle back at the 13 and then went 13 yds for the score the backup quarterback Lucian Anderson and the Falcons up 19 nothing with 9 seconds left well Lu fora might have to go practice tackle drills in the locker room during halftime because every time they seem to finally get into the back field that time it was Peter chaloo number 93 getting into the back field would have been a rough ankle tackle but not able to get it done against these bigger faster strong ER skill position players for the Falcons for Lucian Anderson the second his second touchdown of his college football career after playing three games last year and rushing for a score clether sends it through the uprights Bowling Green up 20 nothing with nine seconds left in the first quarter and again I know we said that foron went down 17 nothing to Buffalo last year this feels pretty deflating it feels a little bit worse than 17 to Nothing Even though 20 to nothing is worse mathematically I think that's because of the atmosphere here I mean it's just a sea of orange the Rams can't seem to do anything even when they have a right guy in the right spot when they have open field tacklers there to make the play where they need to can't seem to do it physically outmatched right now L you talk about the Miss tackles and I think that's the frustrating thing about this first quarter it's not necessarily that the Forum Rams are just getting locked up on the line they're getting hats to the football these Bowling Green players and you know credit to these athletes they're big they're strong they're fast that's why they play in the FCS or the FBS but they are breaking tackles left and right and they're breaking them in bad ways just shaking off for them Defenders there's not a lot of juking not a lot of trucking just waiting for the hit to come and then pushing the defender down their legs and keep running well head coach Scott leer said it's been an injury-ridden Camp to say the least we're going to have to move some people around the injuries really haven't reared their heads so far today as bow and green has been able to do whatever they please one more kickoff here in the first quarter perhaps one more play for forom offensively long charges strong kick down the middle Hatfield will take it out from the end zone working along the numbers get tripped up back at the 15 and the knee hit H just after the 20 yd line forom has 3 seconds to run one play another solid return there by Mason Hatfield looking at the positives here even though there's not too many for forom that's the second time he's one close bro broken tackle away from breaking one for a big gain there's some holes there for forom on this kick return unit Julius luid through one quarter of play five carries 47 yards that's an average of 9.4 thanks a lot to that 18 yd carry his longest of the day wide receiver stack on the far side Lage to the left hip of Montes first and 10 from the 21 to give to luid working right up inside that interior line and ends up getting all the way up to the 25 yd line a strong gain of four to end the quarter forom finally able to get some push on that interior unit on Anthony Hawkins they're going to need to keep doing that if they want a chance here offensively for them going up against their one and only FBS opponent of the year in Bowling Green and it has been tough sledding so far the Falcons lead 20 to nothing through one quarter of play that takes us to the first update of the 2024 football season we send it back to Chaz McAdams to take us around the World of Sports the one-on-one scoreboard thanks Lou starting off with the first quarter update Brandon auk just resigned with the San Francisco 49ers a 4year $120 million deal makes the final big sweep Stakes of the NFL season done and live the Patriot League's Own Lafayette is trailing Buffalo at home 13 to Z through the first quarter looks like a shaky outing for the Patriot League's preseason poll winner coming up in FBS action the Howard bison are down 14-0 in New Brunswick to the Scarlet Knights of ruers in the first half touchdowns from deir Miller and aan camases the Wake Forest is up in a charity match up versus North Carolina entt agies should be a nice opening game for the Demon Deacons preparing them for tough ACC schedule Deon Clayborn running in for the only touchdown of the game coach Prime is back trying to find success in Colorado as they face the NDSU Buffalo's at 8 with a studio update I'm Chaz McAdams and thank you Chaz you can hear hear him again at the close of the third quarter you'll also hear him at halftime for the oneon-one halftime show with Chris Kino and Chaz McAdams we bring you back to dway El Perry Stadium and Evan again it's been a little ugly the Falcons up 20 nothing through one quarter of play and this forom offense has really struggled to get things going they've really struggled to get their very talented receivers into the game just one reception for Garrett Cody nine yards that's all they have to show in the past game it's been very ugly but you have to look at the future here not the past if it's 20 to7 it's a whole new ball game than it being 28 to nothing if you give the ball back to the defense a huge drive here and you're absolutely right Lou these grad students garri Cody McKai felon Cole thoron Jeff CIO on the tight end unit have to get it going in the passing attack which is the Falcon's biggest threat forum's found success offensively in the Run game so far that's all on the back of Julius Lage six carries 51 yards and that's been a guy that they've been able to go to when the sledding has been tough I think back to last year there were a lot of games where maybe the passing game went off to a slow start and it was Julius luff that picked up the first downs did the tough things and even I think back to the first play of his drive that took us to the end of the first quarter lffd runs right into the team of that defense it looks like he's got four guys around him and he still works up for four yards the strength of that senior running back is sometimes absurd and it's been the same the one Saving Grace for forom offensively absolutely I'm expecting to see maybe some screen passes maybe some pitches here to Julius luff because because the offensive line in front of him hasn't been giving him too much help you want to help them out a little bit by throwing off the timing of this defensive unit getting the ball into your playmaker hands without having to take the time in the back field to do it graduate student wide receiver Makai Felton nursing a lower body injury this is KJ Reed the sophomore receiver in the near slot three receiver tight end set to open the second quarter the forom trails 20 to nothing Montes has Lage to his left first down and 10 from the 25 montz play action looking right for Garrett Cody knocked Away by Ola doen as that's swatted down by the allconference cornerback and once again running tightly with Garrett Cody Garett Cody fourth in The Patriot league and yards tied for fourth with in touchdowns last season a guy a lot of teams don't put in man coverage on an island Falcon doing a good job of that early on CCO comes out to the ne slot we've got trips left third down and seven they need the 31 it's LR to the right of Montes 5 seconds into our second quarter Montes looks to the sideline for the call just 5 seconds left on the play clock four3 Lage motions to the other side Montes gets the snap off the give to Lage Cuts up for a couple five yards short of the first down as this defense once again comes up with a big stop defense swarming to the ball they actually adjusted right after Julius luid moved so even adjusting to adjustments that the Rams make when you have talent when you have physicality and you put the brains and focus into it it's a really scary sight on defense this is Will Haslet for the third time today and that might be three times too many for Joe Colin and his coaching staff for their liking electric Forum offense has been held down so far just one first down just a couple first downs as Haslet boots it away to the 35 PES breaks one tackle now Cuts right up the middle loose across Midfield still going finally brought down ahead of the 40 yd line and Miss tackles Miss tackles broken tackles we say it time and time again another big time return from Justin bees well that's Walker ainson for the Rams The Long Snapper a guy who started every game for them in 2023 doing a really good job of getting all the way down there the second the ball was caught not able to make the tackle and as you said Lou the same story for three other Rams Defenders there 1404 left in the second as the Falcons take over from the opposing 38 yd line great field positioning after the return from pagis running backs flank bzo on either side Bas La time in the pocket throws left for Fannon shakes one tackle shakes another still still on his feet and finally taken down by a swarm of Defenders Nile Perkins in there Jaylen Dawson in there John Scott Jackson bareta in there looked like it took four or five Rams to finally pull Fannon to the ground which is what you'd expect from a massive guy like Fannon big play there by John Scott a guy who Nile Perkins told us to look for this season a guy he's expecting to take it to the next level and help this defense out all that work only a gain of two baslac under Center Johnson across in motion to the near slot BAS L gives to Stewart cuts out left has a bit of a hole knocked down at the 35 yd line so calling about no gain and one of the first times today that we've seen this line hold strong and make the first tackle definitely one of the first times today Jackson Barletta flying into the backfield great veteran presence there reading the play before it happens a huge second down stop for the Rams because it sets them up for this third down now an even bigger third down you can't let B uh you can't let Bowling Green March down your throat yet again here and put it in the end zone for six fourth T tackle of the game for Baretta Bas lack in empty on third down and six looks middle throws middle it's Fanon at the 30 yd line Cuts up past the first down they move the chains get up inside the 25 and for Harold Fanon his fourth reception of the ball game a very tough cover there for the young freshman Jaylen Dawson Harold Fanon putting a very Nifty move on him before getting the ball slicing through to midle linebackers and cutting up field for the first 1223 left in the first half a three receiver tight end set as fan in motions over to the near slot it's Patterson the running back play action the near side screen to Johnson Jr up past the 20 inside the Red Zone Osman makes the tackle at the 16 second reception of the game for the Auburn transfer Malcolm Johnson Jr and although good yardage there from the Falcons finally able to make some tackles here for forom that's about the Third or fourth open field solo tackle of the drive a good sign for their defense second down and two 1150 left in the second quarter baslac gives to Patterson he is sworn behind the line of scrimmage a tackle for a loss Peter shaloo a big tackle that moves the offense back a bit finally a big play that's what forom had a bunch of when they beat Mac opponent Buffalo last season you need more big plays more broken plays in particular when you're on defense on third down and three the Rams looking to limit Bowling Green to a field goal it's baslac under Center two backs in the back field play action throws off his back foot wide open is Jason Patterson stumbles a bit still gets inside the 10 yd line picks up the first down they rule him down at the nine nice throw by basac off the back foot very good throw to a very open receiver seemed to be a Mis coverage there by Andrew Osman had him in man coverage Osman a guy who conin referred to as a leader who helps out the younger guys even as a sophomore showing a little bit that he's also a younger guy there first and goal from the nine two receiver two tight end set Patterson offset left forom has five on the line it's the give to Patterson up for a couple now he swarmed so call it only a gain of one as he gets up to the eight yd line that time forom swarming quickly Jason Jaylen Dawson Mike Courtney in the scrum there Andrew Osman heads off the Freshman Boogie Owens heads into the secondary and claudy Robinson with a good initial push second Team all Patriot League last season they're going to need the Bigos tackle to step up and disrupt this offense in the middle baslac flanked by a back on either side he's in the gun for second and goal from the eight looking middle steps up he'll look to run plenty of open base baslac into the end zone another touchdown for the Bowling Green Falcons they're up 26 to nothing 954 left in the first half well we didn't categorize baslac as a runner as an improviser I called him a field General but that was very field generales seeing that everybody's covered very well except for him and taking it 15 yards about for the touchdown rush Conor baslac last season 44 rushes negative 82 yards those mostly due to sacks but did have two rushing touchdowns he picks up one here against forom clether on for the extra point kick clears the line and through the uprights clether now three for four on Pats after missing his first and Bing green up 27 to nothing with 954 and again it seems like Bowling Green doing whatever they want they've got time in the POS pocket basack finding a lot of open receivers and caps off the drive with an 8y rushing touchdown definitely doing everything that they want another bad sign for the Rams Cooper lefon over here with the training staff he looks good though he just got something taped up he'll be running back to the Huddle that's a young freshman a large young freshman 6'7 315 lbs glad to get him back in the game for forom but for Bowling Green everything is going your way there is no problem here in the RMC frustration for the forom Rams they Trail 27 to nothing in their season opener here in Ohio you're listening to PM football on 90.7 FM wfuv hi this is Ben Oppenheimer reminding you that tune in to New York's longest running Sports Colin show one-on-one catch one-on-one live on the wfuv sports YouTube channel every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and then later on 90.7 FM from 11:00 p.m. to 2 a.m. we'll catch you next Saturday on one-onone it's been a struggle so far for the Forum Rams they Trail 27 to nothing here at the do in Ohio Lou Orlando Evan Harkin bringing you forom football on wfv Sports and for Connor baslac 5 for six with 9 four yards and you can add a rushing touchdown to the mix he's had an easy day so far seemingly and now this forum offense will look to get back on the field and maybe put together a scoring drive but it seems like nothing on either side of the ball is going easy it's been a quarterback's dream for Conor baslac today no pressure at all wideopen receivers rushing touchdowns for forom what you need is kind of exactly what I'm seeing right now Lou NY Perkins and James Conway two captains of this defense walking up and down the bench slapping everyone on their shoulder pad making them look them in the eyes and giving them some motivation before dapping them up walking back out to the field knowing that they're all together and they have to stay locked in here that's what you want out of your veteran leadership a knew coming into this game this was going to be a tough opponent we talked to both gar Cody and N Perkins and they both kind of echoed we're going to have to play almost perfect football we have to play really clean this is a really good opponent they're experienced a lot of seniors and talent really in every position group you can say the same about forom but there is a difference from FCS talent to FBS talent I think that's shining through a bit right now a difference in talent and size another big thing shining through Harold Fanon Jr looking much bigger than everybody trying to tackle him out here for forom it'll be Zack long with kickoff duties and he's G to do that quite a bit as the Falcons have four touchdowns already 954 left in the first half long sends it right down the middle Hatfield will let it go and the Rams take over from their own 25 for CJ Montes and This Crew again it's been tough sledding it doesn't feel like the passing game has really been an option for them so far I think a big part of that is that this defensive line of Bing Green's gotten quick penetration and made it tough for Montes to sit in Pocket very tough to sit in that pocket what I'm expecting is some perimeter throws Joe Colin told us today they will be using the perimeter a lot the Falcons mentioned they know the Rams like to use the perimeter they haven't at all yet that's something that can help you out when you're having trouble giving the QB enough time first and 10 from the 25 a three receiver one tight end set play action Montes looking right goes deep down the field got a man open incomplete but a flag flies Montes under through the streaking KJ Reed and that ended up being a proponent of drawing the pass interference that was definitely a Defender attempting to pass interfere because in college we know it's not a spot foul it's 15 yards from the ball so KJ re being so far downfield all you have to do is tackle him in college and it's not too bad but a very good play there by forom giving CJ enough time to find an open receiver although it didn't connect was the red shirt freshman Tracy Rebels penalized for pass interference Reed had a step or two against him there on that go route so wide receiver stacks on either side it's first and 10 from their own 40 947 to play here in the first half just three on the line for Bowling Green Montes gives to luid this time excuse me that's Ricky Parks his first Carry of the ball game and a burst up for about six yards Ricky Parks missed most of last season with an injury he's back and he can be an explosive one two punch with Lage this is a guy that knows about the FBS he played at Utah for two seasons Park stays out there play action Montes looking mle rolls to his left a flag flies in the backfield Montes will go out of Bounds at Midfield but you have to think this is probably something going against that o line David EV bowena turned completely around not sure if he's the culprit but multiple guys on that offensive line looking like they were holding suspects after that play they got number 74 Duke Leonard so that's the left guard Ur epena the left tackle either way the point stands a 5y penalty that will send for them 10 yard penalty that not only negates Parks his run but moves them back to Second and 14 ball spotted on the 36 910 in ticking on the first half it's Park side car left three receiver tight end set Montes looks left throws left out of the reach of the sophomore receiver Ricky Gonzalez at the 40 yd line had some space on that sideline montes's throw just a bit too far those are the little things you need on offense you need the hitch routes to be completions you need to get those five yards when these DBS are giving them to you third and 14 from the 36 they need midfield for the first for them in a trips formation it's OD KJ Reed and Matt buron on the far side Ricky Gonzalez all alone to the left Park stays out there on third down Bowling Green sends for Montes throws over the middle it's brought in Ricky Gonzalez a few yards short of Midfield and at this point in the game you wonder if they just keep the offense out there he might as well keep it out there because the defense has not shown any ability to stop any type of play so might as well go on the attack if you can't defend that's what they'll do for them NASCAR's back to the line of scrimmage fourth down and three again they need Midfield they're at the 47 right now 8:30 and ticking on this first half Montes peers in towards the sideline four in the line once again here comes a flag with eight seconds left in the play clock and a false start going against forom and we'll see if coach conin still elects to keep the offense out there and he won't Here Comes will Haslet and that's when you talk about pre- snap and post Snap penalties that's something that a ton of these players have harped to us that that was a huge issue they need to clean up that's one you're going to regret huge and a huge issue that coach conin absolutely dislikes he doesn't want his players causing any issues before the play even starts they have enough trouble even running plays right now L Haslet stands at his own 28 nearly gets the pun away the crowd ooz and Oz it bounces at the 25 foro Let It Roll inside the 20 it's tapped down at the 15 if you're looking for bright spots that is the second punt for will Haslet inside the 20 really good punting by a really good punter here I mentioned the awards he got a very big punter as well I think the only one you might mistake for a linebacker out here big number 49 will Haslett showing you the big leg we talk about the departures that have left this forom team from 2023 and most people immediately go to MJ wri the sixth alltime leading receiver Lucas Portez a multiple All Conference left tackle or right tackle um maybe even you go to the defensive side Steven Williams II third not talked enough about is the kicker Brandon peskin who transferred to Richmond it's good that Haslet still here for the punting unit but it's a freshman Bennett Henderson we haven't seen a ton of him but when you talk about special teams which is something that Forum did pretty well last year won a couple games and teams that is a big departure for's had a lot of really good special teamers not even only in the kicking position kicker Brandon peskin leaving four Richmond kicker Michael Bernard heading over to Kentucky Long Snapper Tom Callahan going to Syracuse so a lot of these special teamers moving up into the FPS after playing at forom showing that they put a lot of Pride into that unit will H carrying the pride into this season I think that's the big X Factor because you look at the other position groups you can replace MJ R to a certain extent with Garrett Cody who was second Team all Patriot League McKai Felton was an all conference player two years ago cole thoron really is a sleeper in this wide receiver group and then some of the young guys that are starting to step up and then on the defensive side hard to believe right now as they Trail 27 nothing there is a ton of depth there I think the big question is how will the Freshman Bennett Henderson adjust to this kicking roll taking over as their lead field goal guy their lead extra point guy and he has a good leg we know that we talked we talked to Coach conin he said you know about about the same range as Brandon peskin just not as consistent and that's going to be a big thing to watch this season we really haven't gotten to see a ton of him but that's going to be a big question for these ranks it's going to be a big question and I think he made it a big point to say yet to say he's not as consistent yet cuz he's a really young guy that he has a lot of aspiration to will grow into a great kicker also showed these recruiters for the forom coaching staff that he could do it in high school with 640 plus yard kicks that is a major stat for high school that would be a really good stat for an FCS kicker Forum defensive side of the ball Alonso Dixon was another major departure and that was a guy that had been here for six years fought through an injury to come back last year and give them valuable minutes but and depth on this line even with Jack low out to start the season depth in this linebacker unit depth in this secondary we saw Alex keer a little bit and he's out there now after really not practicing a ton through Camp he was a question mark coming in but he's on the left side of the field at cornerback play resumes from Bowling Green's own 15 baslac gives it to Stewart eyeing the outside edge he's got plenty of space shakes off a tackle from Osman still going rumbling past the first down crosses the 30 yd line and Andrew Osman sent his entire body flying into terion Stewart and he still shook it off didn't do much and we know Andrew Osman is a very good safety here in The Patriot league in the FCS had an amazing freshman season also senior Captain a guy who's got preseason Awards n Perkins out there just not big enough to get it done against these big boys first and 10 from the 27 after the 12yd run baslac fakes the pitch looking left side has a receiver turning up the field knocked out of bounds that's Jamal Johnson out of the back field again the chain move as he works up past the 40 yd line two plays two first downs and some showing off here from the Falcons you would expect them to just keep pounding the rock getting a little trickery going maybe working on some plays against this forom defense right now about 705 to go in our second quarter baslac under center it's terion Stewart the tail back the wide receivers crept in Johnson goes across in motion to the near side now he comes back baslac pitches left for Stewart Cuts back one Defender but tackle behind the line of scrimmage that'll go for about a gain of or a loss of four or five that's Nicholas Pascarella flying in for the tackle and one of the few tackles for loss that we've seen go against this Bowling Green offense and Pascarella not typically a guy you'd expect to make big plays here only three tackles on the season last year giving the Rams depth like you were talking about Lou on that defensive side that they need pasarella battled an injury last year he's healthy and working into the linebacker unit Ram Trail 27 nothing but 615 to go baslac fires left again and this time incomplete compl looking for Jon Patterson the throw just a little bit too far in front some good Pursuit there by Mike Courtney making Patterson feel his footsteps before he even got there 49 tackles on the season last year a guy that can get you on the ground in the open field third and 12 from their own 37 611 to play in the half forom looking to force the pting unit out there for the first time today basac in the gun three receiver tight end set he's got Patterson to his left five on the line for forom they send all five baslac looking right throws short and in the flat Andrew Osman W rips him around and throws him down that was Elijah Boyd one of the backup tight ends who made the reception but still nine yard shy of the first down and Andrew osman's tackle will force the punting unit out there huge Tackle by Andrew Osman and a gritty tackle I have written down the Rams have to play gritty in this game they're outmatched physically and talent wise you got to get it done Osman falling on the ground getting juked out a little bit before getting back up and making the tackle on the players Jersey the type of poise and composure you need to see from these open field tacklers Bowling Green punter John Henderson stands at the 25 the Joo transfer he's got quite the leg with a long punt of 73 this one spirals to forum's own 18 yd line as the fair catch called by Cole thoron 516 left to go in the first half the Rams still shut out as they Trail 27 nothing you're listening to for football on wfuv [Music] Sports hi this is Michael wfuv class of 1982 wfuv is your home for all things forom Athletics with live coverage of forom football forto men's and women's basketball in addition to our Saturday show one-on-one stay right here on 90.7 FM for all things wfuv Sports [Music] Lou Orlando Evan Harkin the for football season opener for the 2024 season here from Bowling Green Ohio the Rams Trail 27 nothing now they did just force their first punt of the ball game and as Bowling Green starts to matriculate some of their backups into the game that was third or fourth string tight end Elijah Boyd that made the reception about n yard shy of the first down marker there they've kept their quarterback Conor basac out there for now but if this game continues to Trend the way that it's been trending you have to think that bowling Green's going to get some subs in there and you wonder how long Forum keeps the first liners out there well I've been saying this is a big drive for about every drive for forom this is their biggest this is a Do or Die Drive the backup should be coming in if it's 35 nothing even though it's the first half it's been all dominant for Bowling Green the Rams have to use their speed which is an advantage here against the Falcons and get some guys on the perimeter flying around it's been as you said tough going so far and I think feels a little different than the Buffalo game when you look at I'm not sure those Buffalo receivers those Buffalo running backs were quite as big quite as strong as the guys on Bowling Green and it goes to show one of the best teams in the Mac showing exactly why they were picked to finish third in the preseason poll we've got McKai Felton back out there on the field in the far slot Jaden Allen on the near slot as two spread out either side Allen comes across in motion for first and 10 from the 18 we pick up with 516 left to go in the first half Montes gives luid right up the middle up Bru to speed past the 20 yd line gets flipped over at the 22 great adjustment there by Montes at the line flipping the run to the other side as he saw an outside linebacker coming to Blitz makes for a positive play they call it a gain of three a wide receiver stack on the far side luid offset right of Montes the clock ticks under five minutes in our first half Montes looking left throws left Garrett Cody the waist high reception at the 25 forced out of bounds look for for them to go to their Playmakers their grad students the guys they Trust on the outsides gar Cody the big one of those names foram two yard shy of the first down they keep the same formation out there at the 26 they need the 28 to give to LFR men at the line and tackled shy of the first once again this defensive line coming up strong big tackle there for the Falcons not one we usually see in The Patriot League against Julius Lage getting sent backwards when he needs to fall forward for that first down once again and a fourth and one Thon will keep the offense out there and why not you Trail 27 nothing clock ticks under four minutes 14 seconds left in the play clock three receiver tight end set LGE offset right just four in the line for Bowling Green the give once again to Lage this time has enough for the first as he gets all the way up to the 30 yd line a call that that a gain of four going right up into the teeth of that defense there's a Julius LGE we are used to seeing for's leading rusher last season third in The Patriot league with 10 rushing touchdowns saying I will not get sent backwards twice I'm going to get this first down for my guys fresh set of downs at the 30 320 to go here in our first half montz play action looking left throws deep down the field for Ricky Gonzalez battling a tug on the Jersey it's swatted Away by Edward ambo no flag on the tight coverage forum's tried to shoot deep it's been incomplete every time definitely could make a case that there should have been a flag there some Jersey tugging a little pushing and pulling a really good Ball by CJ Montes as Gonzalez didn't have too much room but puts it right in the Bread Basket not able to connect same formation on second and 10 Lu moves over to the left side this the give to luid on the right breaks fre picks up the first down cutting outside along the side line still going one Defender left to beat he knocks him out of Bounds at the 25 Julius Lage takes the Rams into opposing territory putting this offense on his back as he's done ever since he got here is Julius luff right now they sent a blitz exactly where that run was supposed to go luid seeing guys falling out of position going right up the spot that they left vacant a 42 yd run he's ruled down at the 28 Montes gives to lefford side steps one tackle works up past the 25 they'll stay down at the 23 and is a gain of five and the juice is loose right now looking like terion Stewart with the ability to not get tackled right now he's pumped up coming off the field flexing those muscles giving the offense a reason Julius luid up over a 100 yards today Ricky Parks enters the Back Field to the left of Montes three receiver tight end set on second and six 210 the play snap the give to Parks this time he's met right at the line maybe gets one and it will set up third and short we reached the two-minute timeout not to be confused with the two-minute warning in the NFL but college football more or less has instituted the same kind of thing they call it the two-minute timeout the clock stops with 2 minutes left in both halves as the Rams Trail 27 nothing this is possibly their best Drive of the game thanks in large part to a 42 yd run from Julius luid that took them from their own 30 all the way up to the opposing 28 that's got forom knocking on the door of the red zone so to say in field goal R so you like to think that no matter what you get points out of this and the Rams are lucky that this isn't the NFL in this is a two-minute timeout instead of a warning cuz they need to get together and figure out what they're going to run here on the biggest third down of the game for their offense like you said Lou Mar knocking on the door they've been marching down the field it's now third and short third and three or four will they run here again I'm expecting Bowling Green is going to be sending heavy pressure not wanting to get beat on the ground by Julius luid yet again on third down montz three of seven on pass attempts for just 24 yards he's found Garrett Cody twice Ricky Gonzalez once longest connection of the game 13 yards so again they've done most of this offense on the back of Julius luff who has 12 carries 108 yards averaging nine per carry and that is the remarkable thing about Julius leage when you say that he got FPS offers I think it's pretty clear this is a guy that could play in the FBS maybe even be a rostered guy on a power five with the strength the speed that he brings to the table even with forom outmatched offensively he's been able to have a productive day he's been a standout both physically and talent-wise you can definitely see a difference between him and the rest of the players on that forom offense but helping him do that was the offensive line this whole Drive I've seen more time in the pocket from Montes more holes more of a push on this very Drive which we didn't see on previous drives from that forom offensive line maybe Cooper lefon got the tape he needed to help execute and this offense returns Ryan Joyce who played just four games last year with sideline with an injury but notably The Freshman Cooper playing right tackle after Nolan aloya graduated Cooper lefon comes in the Freshman from St Peter's prep three or 6'7 315 lbs and pretty lean at that so this is an absurd stature for a freshman and Coach conin even admitted he's pretty far ahead even technique wise of most freshman o linemen that come into this program yeah we asked coach conin about a bunch of talented freshman and he gave us a yes and no they have work to do once we got to Cooper Leon he said yeah this guy's a little different than the rest of the Freshman he moves very elite for his size he's very athletic for the biggest guy on the field in maroon and white third and three from the opposing 21 trips left Lage to the right of Montes four in the line for Bowling Green with an even two minutes to play in the half claps to the snap play action montz looking left throws left he has gyot wide open picks up the first Works inside the 15 tackled by Edward Rambo but forom gets inside the red zone for the first time today and they pick up the first down great manipulation there by your leader in the backfield CJ Montes he pump fakes to a different receiver on a spot route gets the defense in zone coverage to all run to that player then finds gar Cody After making him open that's what you need to do when you're one of the most talented players on this team you got to do it yourself sometimes there was a little bit of a clock issue isue in college football when you pick up the first down inside 2 minutes the clock stops so they'll reset the clock to 150 forom gets 7 Seconds put back on it now the clock ticks and resumes first and 10 from the opposing 12 three receiver tight end set now a flag flies we await the call from our officials refs deliberating here 142 as the clock stops on the whistle from the refs seems to be some confusion at the moment for them trying to put together their first scoring Drive of the game they Trail 27 nothing inside the red zone for the first time today at the 12 yd line CJ Montes using this time he's given wisely going up to his guy G Cody and getting that chemistry on point letting him know where he has to be timing wise for them to get six here they call a false start on the center Cody Johnson Joe conin will use his time out to avoid the 10-sec runoff the clock stays at 142 but for to move back from the 12 to the 17 and pre-nap post Snap penalties that was a story all season long can't say that that trend's necessarily been bucked so far yeah when you're outmatched in a lot of different areas you have to play your game cleanly they haven't been doing that at all and not only haven't been doing that but have shown the disability to do that in the biggest situations of the game now down here in the red zone for the first time you get a great play from CJ Montes making a first down happen and then a fall start leads to that yardage being negated deducted right back where they started I think it's frustrating right because there's a lot of stuff in this game you can't control and in a game like this you can't control being smaller than someone to a certain extent you can't control a Miss tackle when the guy just shoves you right off of him if you're not stronger than someone hey that's just what it is but you can control the pre-nap the post Snap penalties first and 10 from the 15 they can pick up a first down here two wide outs either side Lu side car left Montes looking right swarmed in the pocket taken down from behind Charles Roser the outside linebacker dragging him down from behind that moves forward him outside of the red zone as they're back at the 22 yd line another loss of five a coverage sack right there there was enough time for Montes to scramble to move up in the pocket he had enough time just wasn't anybody open 115 and Ticking the second and 20 snap play action montz looks right he rolls out right points up field he'll cut up and takes the defender head on this should go as a loss once again maybe he got back to the line of scrimmage and they'll say yes Montes was able to dive back to the line of scrimmage still third and 20 as the clock runs under a minute Montes fixing that helmet you do not want to see your Star Quarterback head to-head with Anthony Hawkins this 300 lb 6'2 senior you want to get down especially in this game if you're CJ montz we got a long season ahead for will use their second timeout theyve got one left here in this first half there's just 40 second 46 seconds left so you might as well use it here take some time collect yourselves for them after a couple really nice plays the run from lers they pick up the first down with Garrett Cody they get inside the Red Zone a false start penalty a sack and then Lu just or Montes just scrambling to get back to the line of scrimmage it's been really tough for him to put together multi multiple positive plays they haven't been able to march down the field a big problem with that has been the pre and post Snap penalties whenever they do really well get a first down get a bunch of first downs have 100 rushing yards from your running back then they take another step back they have to stop taking two steps forward one step back and just keep pushing along trips left for foram Cole thoron the lone receiver on the far side it's third and 20 their opposing 22 Montes looks left throws off the back foot for luid open space across middle cuts out right hurdles the defender gets inside the 10 he's still short of the first down marker the clock runs 35 seconds in ticking and you wonder if forom keeps the offense out here six yards away from a first down you would think they would it's a long game ahead they're down 27 points right now you want to go get six or seven here taking a lot of time the clock taking under 20 seconds continues to tick montis peers in towards the sideline it's Fourth and six and Forum offense still not set 10 seconds in taking now and they might be content to let the clock run down 5 43 montz walks towards the sideline the clock stops at 3 seconds so it appears as if they're probably just going to go for the field goal here and ensure that there's no time left for Bowling Green to do anything in return you would expect a little bit more of an aggressive play in a game where you seem a little bit outmatched it's your first time being down in the Red Zone you just had a really good play from Julius LGE but with the decision to go for three here you definitely need to get three here out of Bennett Henderson going to be a big three points the Rams first of the game Bennett Henderson will look to attempt the first field goal of his collegiate career the story offensively continues to be Julius luid who on top of his 108 rushing yards now has a reception for 14 yards makes him the second leading reception for him today shy of Garrett Cody Bennett Henderson will come out here this is a 2 five yard field goal spotted on the far hash and now Bowling Green will ice The Freshman with a timeout of their own Bowling Green with timeouts to give will make this just a little bit more stressful for the fresh let's take a look at the profile on Bennett Henderson 111 for 114 on Pats in his high school career went 27 to 34 with field goals and again as you mentioned the six from 40 plus so this is a guy that has a leg the one thing we don't know is what's the accuracy Pat is in high school a little bit closer than at the Collegiate level and this is a 25 yard field goal which makeable at the Collegiate level should be makeable for a guy like Ben Henderson but have to imagine the nerves on his first kick got to be ramping up I was just going to say not only all those factors but the nerves the orange C over there he's never seen a stadium like this before let's see if he can get it done with the pressure on him Haslet crouches on the far hash snap the hold Henderson clears the line and the kick is good Benny Henderson the first Fielding goal of his collegate career forom gets on the board at the end of half they still Trail 27 to three so they've got their work cut out for them but a pretty promising Drive LED mostly by Julius Lage gets for him on the board at the end of the half I think you see what the game plan is going to be coming out of halftime it's going to be get the ball in number 15's hands cuz he seems to be the only guy that can physically outmatch these Falcons when they're on defense jumping over tacklers he was upset that he didn't get into the End Zone after an 100 yard day already at halftime well Forum Trails 27 to3 and their opening half of the 2024 season and with that we send it back to the Rose Hill studios in the Bronx Chris Corino and chasmic Adams have your one-on-one halftime report the one-on-one halim report taking you live from the Rose Hill studio here on the beautiful Campus of forom University it's Bowling Green getting out to the hot start on the forom Rams 27-3 forom getting out to a slower start started to build some momentum we could say toward the end of that half but still Bowling Green firmly in front we're going to go through some of the highlights and some of some of the uh things that stood out there in that first half first this game had a lot of fireworks from the very beginning it was Bowling Greens Justin pages with a 100 yard kick return on the opening play of this game and got the and the junior got the Falcons out to a very early 6 nothing lead kick reaches the back of the end zone taken out by pis along the near side pis breaks the tackle he's loose past the 40 one man left to beat he's still going all the way up the sideline no one's going to stop him how about this start for Bowling Green Justin pagis 100 yards for the kick return touchdown a little bit later it was bowling Green's offense once again tyon Stewart with a stiff arm a seveny run and a Bowling Green has a two touchdown lead two receiver two tight end set baslac gives less for Stewart the outside edge stiff arms a Defender Forks up and into the end zone touchdown Bowling Green the Bowling Green barrage continued it was backup QB Lucien Anderson the third running back uh running quarterback power up the middle and into the end zone Anderson takes the snap running left QB power into the end zone broke a tackle back at the 13 and then went 13 yards for the score the backup quarterback Lucian Anderson and the Falcons up 19 nothing with 9 seconds left the onslaught continued it was starting quarterback Connor baslac on the keeper and in the end zone for the Falcons once again the fourth time of the night he'll look to run plenty of open space Bas laack into the end zone another touchdown for the Bowling Green Falcons they're up 26 to nothing at this point forom defense slightly started to find their own linebacker Nick Pascarella got a tackle for a 6-y loss leading to a Bowling Green punt some momentum for the forom offense it was Julius luid with a 42 yd rush through the blitzing B uh Bowling Green defense fom's offense started kind of gaining momentum there toward the end of the half forom not really in the best of Spirits at one point it was all the way to a four touchdown lead for this Bowling Green Team for him with an absolute goose egg on the scoreboard but then it doesn't seem totally different now 2 to three but seems like the momentum is almost in a completely different place yeah uh going into it uh it was it was go going into this game it was very clear that one team is FBS and one team is FCS I did not expect but these teams are closer closer than than than you would think of the two leagues you know what I mean it's kind of out there but like it's not it's not Georgia versus like like Norfolk agie citel yeah yeah exactly so I see for them I see a team that has the best defensive depth chart in the last four years since I've been at the school I'm senior now because that was always the thing you know what I mean even in the dorat era the defense could just never get it done but the team looks the most complete Collin's done a great job of putting the squad together and it just feels like the win was so it's it's hard to describe what a 100 yard punt return on the opening kick of your season how quickly that can take the wind out of your sales in a away game but it it it truly I I think at that point it was a wash you know I mean for forum's been able to do some cool stuff the upset first Buffalo last year but I just think that that play is so demoralizing and almost insurmountable right like like in terms of emotions you're at Bowling Green New Year uh sophomore quarterback like trying to figure everything out and it just like what what a terrible play to start and second quarter they start to pick it up start to figure it out Julius laughridge amazing player great in the backfield for the Rams but it doesn't seem to be enough I think they got to rely on him heavier I would send like eight blockers his way run two tight ends have both them blocked for him and just see what he can do running down the field because CJ Montes has completed three passes so far this game and I I just think if fora wants an offense that that can at least show some signs of life uh in the second half at Bowling Green they're going to need to uh they're they're going to need to rely on Julius LGE even more yeah and touching on the point you made earlier this forum football program even going back to last season has had some FBS success they beat Buffalo last season even going to over a decade ago they beat Temple in Philadelphia it was the first time an FCS school had beaten an FBS School in almost a decade so in the last decade or so two FBS wins for this forom program they've had the recent the recent history of doing it now in a game like this similar to what you just said first play of the game it's a 100 yard kick return demoralizing was the word you used insurmountable was another word you used but just looking at it from Face Value it's what all the insecurities all the negative maybe thoughts you have going into the game it's almost confirming all them in 30 seconds 20 seconds if that you know what I mean and and uh there there's really no other way to describe that obviously the the Rams were the dogs in this match up there's there's no doubt about that but to go down like that so early and then I guess it it shows not a lack of mental fortitude because there it's so hard to surmount that that like I don't know if there are many teams that could have that situation and and make the most of it in the next play like it's not only that that first touchdown was so bad it's almost going down 130 after that is inevitable because you just got punched in the face and you're still kind of rattled especially after that three and out so a very tough one for the Rams I think the o line it has has been something that I I thought was going to be very necessary for CJ in this match up because your Edge rushers are so much better in the Mac than they are in The Patriot League that even though CJ is a Scrambler and has pocket presents that I would describe as way more versatile than than a traditional Gunslinger you still need so much more time uh on those outside those right guards those right tackles uh the left guards left like everyone on the outside and I just think that him not getting enough time he has negative 23 rushing right now that's obviously not ideal if you're the Rams but people forget like Julius laughridge has 100 rushing yards this game like right he's 12 carries for him and and and I know at some point in the second half we looked at each other and this team had around 60 total yards so they did and that shows maybe kind of the ground they made up toward the end of the first half exactly especially when you have minus 23 on the board from your quarterback right right so the The Forum is and we're getting very analytical about this it could be even as simple as um a conversation that was actually had between Evan and Lou on the air talking about the size of these two teams it's just not the same the size on the Bowling Green um side and the size of these these ramps well the size of whatever the stadium you know the stadium the fan base the nil package like I don't know the the fat dads in the in the parking lot like cooking up some oh whatever people in Ohio eat like you know what I and we saw that in a few other places in the country through your update as well yeah of course all in different degrees appreciate the shout out shout out coach Prime as well of course but there there's just no when you go in as as such an underdog that like I mean like FBS FCS it's not it's such a different football it's such a unique situation like when in in any other kinds of like sport like I'm I it's it's not I was trying to try to think of an analogy for the halftime show and I almost wanted to go Champions League to Prem but it's not even that like teams can get promoted to FBS but it's rare way more rare than every season Ken saw State the most recent exactly and but there I just don't see a way that forom can forom just needs to show life they need to because there's National tension not on the game but on that first play so if people are tuning into the game through that via Sports Center of Bleacher Report then forom needs to I guess figure out a way to show it's not a joke of a program that if you come to the Bronx you know what I mean it's not scorting flowers and clown noses like we actually have a team that gets critty and we do and S sorry to be the wi guy but forom does uh they they have a a ground and pound offense that is going to I still think can be very successful starting your season at Bowling Green interesting cuz you know what I mean they played Nebraska two years ago but that's such a different vibe because you go into Nebraska it's like let's just go see what can happen you know what I mean but you go into Bowling Green you still got a little twinkle in the sideo expect exact you still have you have to show up right and they they showed up for it was 30 minutes of a half and they showed up for maybe six minutes right if that and just in general and you have to keep expectations in a place um that's you know respectable and this team does play in The Patriot League to your point that you made a lot of schools similar to for them that may have a relatively prestigious um conference in other sports that plays in FCS football it can be looked down upon but here us being here just in general around the program it is taken extremely seriously and they've had a lot of success over the last couple years as well last year a bit of a downer year but looking over the last half decade or so forom football an overall success for sure so then kind of where I want to go with that uh as we head into the second half year just closing in our Studios the beautiful Rose Hill Studios is keeping it the expectations where they should be this forom team watching them especially with that Resurgence they had in the second half what does this first half say not about the rest of this game but maybe about the rest of their season with competition more in their field maybe uh I like a lot of this sounds so minuscule and uh unimportant and and kind of very abstract via the broadcast I like the energy on the sidelines and almost like the lack thereof like the I like the grizzle demeanor the the the scrunch noses the the low eyes the dog faces the looking at the ground like not in defeat as if in like you're going to eat this loss you're going to have to take it on the chin at the end of the day and again there's a whole half of football who knows you know it could be a miracle at Bowling Green which is probably the only miracle that part of Ohio has seen in a very long time but there's just and and to to your point a little bit about the program being taken seriously you can't do college football without doing it 100% I don't care if you're at the Citadel or you're at Georgia I don't care if you're playing College Station or at moglia if you play the sport of football you got to do it 100% it costs too much there's too big of a team and it takes too much of of a school's athletic schedule if you not put in 100% I think Colin has done that I don't think he considers for forom football approach program that should be taken lightly on the part of him or part on the part of his opponents taking it to what I I see for for for the rest of the season based on that first half again it's just keep that Grizzle demeanor it's not you know we're not putting in uh like the third string Long Snapper at quarterback you know like forom is still going to put their foot on the gas throughout this whole game and I think that give the ball to laugh fridge let him shine I think Garrett Cody I like Garrett Cody deep but maybe running a few more Slants with him some more some more Hooks and and and drags just kind of varying up varying up the routes that he's running to uh to get some better looks for him Perkins also uh the passing game just hasn't been there on either side Bowling Green with other domination hasn't had a hasn't had a passing touchdown yet this game which I know sounds like uh I'm giving I'm giving them too much credit but I'm giving the Rams too much credit for not having that but they're they're not airing out the ball so if you can stop stop the run see what happens on the pass but I think the Rams take a breath know that they're going to eat this loss on the chin but make sure Bowling Green still going to remember them for the rest of the year CJ Montes and the forom Rams definitely have their work cut out for them in the second half that's it for us in the Rose Hill studios here at wfuv sports we're going to send it back to Bowling Green Ohio with Evan and Lou on site and we'll be back after the second half for some post game uh talk as well uh but for now 273 Bowling Green leads the forom Rams we'll be right back Nick Guzman here and I'm James Burley we're the hosts of fuv FC W Fu's very own soccer all season long at wfuv Sports on 90.7 FM or the wfuv sports YouTube page wfuv the flagship station of forom football thank you Chris and thank you Chaz Lou Orlando Evan Harkin back with you from DWI El Perry Stadium in Ohio as they told you in the halftime show it's been tough sleding for the Rams they Trail 27 to three and Evan this looks like a game that in all likelihood is not going to go their way barring a miracle a 24o deficit at halftime is going to be awfully tough to to overcome especially when you look at the Way Bowling Green is playing right now so I have to ask you as someone that's been on that siline before first off what's that feeling like to lose a game like this or to be losing a game like this and where the coaching staff trying to get out of this second half well I think the coaching staff is telling them that maybe the light set on the stadium maybe the sun just went down but the game isn't over yet I think that's what they're punching home to these players because forom played totally different on those last two drives offensively and defensively Lou they got to stop on their last defensive time out there and then they go ahead and get a score it's only three points but it's a score it's a totally different game if forum's able to stop and then score which we saw on that last two drives also forom only 46 seconds less time of possession after that huge last drive if they can take the momentum that they had going into half and bring it over although like you said not likely we saw a different story throughout the rest of the game I think they're looking to replicate the magic they showed at the end big part of that going to be number 15 Julius luff Julius lurid you mentioned his name 12 carries 108 yards so he opens the season with 100 yard game you can add a reception for 14 yards so make that over 120 yard 20 yards all purpose and when you think about how tough it's been for forom on both sides of the ball but especially offensively the fact that CJ Montes has completed on five passes 47 yards what Julius L has done out there on the field against this really strong Bowling Green defense is remarkable and I think back to your point about what the coaches want to see they want to keep seeing the juice be l number 15 dominate a Max School up front dominate them when he's being tackled not allowing that to happen because it just gives you more and more Pride to go in and face Patriot League teams that you know you're going to have a better chance to face both talent-wise and physically you're not going to face a better defense this season in The Patriot league in the CIA than Bowling Green this is a team that Force 28 turnovers last year led the nation they intercepted JJ McCarthy three times that was a Michigan team they only threw six interceptions they only turnover the ball eight times that season four of them came against this Bowling Green Team so make no mistake this is an excellent Bowling Green defense and I think that's the tough part about evaluating this game from a forom perspective is we're coming off the upset victory at Buffalo last season Buffalo comes into this season ranked 10th out of 12 teams in the Mac preseason Bowl uh this is a a Bowling Green Team that is Head and Shoulders above that Buffalo game and you think about how hard fought forom had to play to upset them so you're just talking about a team that's at another level at the very top of the Mac it's FB FBS football they've got elite players at the running back tight end cornerback on the line it's just a really tough task for forom and that's what makes it tough to evaluate this game when the line gets beat or when tackles get missed how do we as broadcasters as fans what are we supposed to take away from that first half I think you take away that forum's got a lot of work to do for sure Lou but they did some little things well like I said getting later on into the half we saw CJ with more time you know sometimes it's about Improvement and not results they started this game CJ three sacks not even enough time to do anything Julius LGE couldn't get the ball going past the line of scrimmage they ended with three points they just got a stop luid was making people miss so I think the Improvement getting better as the game goes on is what you want to see and you're absolutely right I think Kino and chasmic Adams hit it on the nose too this is a different level of football in the FBS Todd Bumpus is a guy that played with s Gardner he was on the 2021 playoff semifinal team he played in that game Donnie Stevens is this team's backup linebacker he had four tackles in the Big 12 championship last year against Texas these guys have played some real football that a lot of FCS teams forom being one haven't seen the level up you want to talk about a guy we've only seen a little bit for Bowling Green Malcolm Johnson Jr two reception for 15 yards he spent Four Seasons at Auburn like you have major transfers coming in from all these big schools that are trying to work into this program Harold Fannon Jr ends up on a lot of lists for top tight end in college football and a lot of times the top 10 goes all the guys in the power five and then every honorable mention is Halo Fanon Jr and it says you know don't sleep on this guy he's still in the ma he probably could have gone to a power five school he chose to stay here that's a guy that's probably going to get drafted yeah and on the other side of Malcolm Johnson you got RJ Garcia he went to Kansas State he's won a big 12 Championship actually Lou so as we've been hitting home this whole time it's a different level of athlete a different type of football player so what you want to see is not exactly results here from forom they're a little bit outmatch you want to see fight you want to see grit you want to see Improvement and you want to see less penalties three more penalties than bowling for them knew going into this game they were going to have to play clean if they wanted a chance you want to see them clean it up in the second half the sun has gone down on the do here in Ohio the lights have turned on we've got one more half left to play 8:43 p.m. here from Bowling Green Ohio Zack long charges for the kickoff sends it deep into the end zone Hatfield watches it Fly bom will start this drive from the 25 and for the moment seems to be the start starters out there yeah I would expect the starters out there for this drive on both sides 27 to3 doesn't seem like a game but it definitely was a little bit of a momentum shift the guys in the studio were letting you know that maybe just looking at the store doesn't score doesn't really show what happened at the end of that half for them looking to build on what they had and looking to give the ball the juice swap CJ Montes 5 for n in the first half 47 yards he was sack four times they're looking for better fortunes here in the second half two receivers up top one down low Lage to the left snap give right to luid tackled behind the line of scrimmage stays up and tries to fall forward and ends up picking up a gain of one and he was met quickly there behind the line of scrimmage quickly Anthony Hawkins getting involved down there as he has been all game really been a fridge in the middle not allowing anything North and South a gain of one second and nine the first 25 seconds of this half wide receiver St either side Montes looking middle throws left and just throws it right into the ground at the feet of Julius luid facing some quick pressure off the line despite the three-man blitz yeah two plays that really only end up in one yard it's not how you wanted to start this drive they're going to need a chunk here on third down maybe set them up for a fourth and one fourth and two you don't want to punt in the situation they struggle to move the ball via the air they need n yards here for the first 1426 left in the third quarter forom Trails by 24 Montes looks middle facing pressure shovels forward for lfd cuts right working past the 35 plenty of space one Defender left to beat it trips him up as he falls forward past the 30 yd line another big gain for Julius luid as he goes from the 26 all the way to the opposing 30 well luid is backing up your claim that maybe this guy could play in the power five because he's looking like a Difference Maker even against teams in the FBS right now it's a 44 yard reception the longest for forom so how about Julius luff the longest run today with 42 yards now the longest reception at 44 first and 10 from the opposing 30 two receivers either side Lu still out there Bowling Green sends three Montes looks right fakes now throws along the sideline caught by Co thoron into the end zone touchdown forom forom gets their first p ing touchdown the season 30 yards CJ montz to Cole thoron and the Rams Trail 27 to9 and there's Cole Thon a guy who he said was a sleeper coming into this season a lot of injuries a lot of really good receivers ahead of him his whole time at forom he's now a grad student making his presence felt a huge touchdown there and they'll all give the old line a high five on the way as CJ Montes with the most time he's had all day to lay a perfect ball out on the money for six maai Felton getting that sideline pumped up Bennett Henderson out for the extra point converted on his first field goal at the end of the half snap hold kick is up and through the upright boredom has double digits they Trail 27 to 10 and Evan you brought up an interesting point right before the second half started 24 Point deficit feels like a lot 17 points not so much that's two touchdowns two two-point conversions and then you throw another single point out there s that's math how you get to 17 how about that seems doable definitely whereas 24 doesn't but the Rams now with a stop and two scores back to back you can feel the momentum shifting a little bit not towards the Rams but showing that they belong in this game which is what you wanted to see Chaz was mentioning that in the studio you want for them to go out there and still leave a presence even if they don't get the W after this one what a ball by CJ Montes Cole thoron guarded tightly there on that go round Along The Far Side line and I I find this a little funny Cole Thorton's only touchdown of the year last season came against Albany it was the season opener up at Albany it was CJ montes's first touchdown of his forom career and once again Cole thoron catches his CJ Montes first touchdown of the season a 30-yard grab yeah they're good friends and Cole Thorton a bigger guy he's a deep threat 6'3 190 able to go play those 50/50 balls that was more like a 7030 ball because of how good it was thrown by CJ Montes right over the shoulder where he needed to be and Montes with an elite play before that on his pass to LGE he was getting tackled through a little sidearm shuffle pass looks like a second baseman flipping the ball to turn two gets it to luid and it gives the Rams the the and it lets the Rams go down the field to score so these big players making big plays in Big Time moments forom struggled so mightily in the past game in the first half and how about this on that drive a 42 yd pass to Julius Lage I'll be it that pass maybe only traveled three yards lefford did the rest with his feet and then a 30 yard pass that that's a legitimate 30 yard pass from monz tole Thor and maybe you start to feel a little bit better here about the offense and no one's saying that forom is going all of a sudden going to pull out this comeback this miraculous comeback but you like to see positive plays here from the offense and an offense that is supposed to be one of the best in the Patriot League led by arguably the best quarterback in the Patriot League good to see them do something positive yeah you're seeing forom B forom finally in this game Brock horn middle linebacker for the Falcons told the media he knows they're really good at passing the ball he also knows they try to deceive defenses they want the quick snaps they want to get up to the line and leave your defense in disarray I saw multiple times on that possession L Corner safeties linebackers looking at each other what do we do what do we do tons of confusion exactly what the Rams need to keep doing they have to outsmart a team that's a lot bigger and more talented than them not sure if forom has necess sily struck fear into the orange wave here at the do still plenty of orange shirts orange all around us in this Stadium but a defensive stop here would certainly help that the worst thing I think forom could do right now is immediately let Bowling Green go right down the field and get those seven points back and it starts on this kickoff we saw the ability of Bowling Green to take one back earlier today Henderson puts his all into it this is going to go to pagis just in front of the End Zone Cuts towards the middle he's past the 20 yd line flipped over by Trey Bradfield down just ahead of the 25 yd line great play there by Trey Bradford who's not typically on the field a big special teamer he appeared in every single game last season and almost every game that was strictly on special teams there was a big hole there Trey Bradford a Savvy vet on that kickoff unit he's been there before knew he had to leave his spot and go plug it Conor baslac returns for the second half he was 11 of 13 in the first an 84.6% completion rate under Center to start this is the end round to Smith and he is tackled behind the line of scrimmage flying in Nick Pascarella a nice start for forom defensively big claudy Robinson with a big piece of that hit along with Pascarella he's flexing in the back field and a little bit of flexing from forom right now hanging in these last 10 20 plays in a row both on offense and defense it's a loss of two Bowling Green back back at their own 24 13 minutes left to go in the third two receiver two tight end set baslac in the gun play action throws middle incomplete wide open was jayen Tilman he juggled it and unable to pull it in with his left hand it's a catch he probably should have had fortunate for forom that he didn't it's a catch he should have had but you got to give forom a little bit of credit there they got in the backfield making baslac throw that ball we don't know if the spiral was off a little bit can't really tell but you got to assume the pressure that they're finally getting might be getting to not only the QBs but the receivers trying to make catches as well forom looking to force their first three and out of the ball game trips left Fannon motions closer to the line baslac in the gun a blitz comes from forom throws over the middle it's brought in but shy of the first down Finn Hogan across tackled at the 30 well short of the first forom is forced to three and out Alex keer throws his fist in the air right after and that was a fisted the air worthy play allowing the receiver to catch the ball knowing he's got about 10 yards to tackle him before he gets that first down getting his team off the field that's backto back stops for this forom defense L just the second time that we've seen John Henderson out a punt but as you noted that was the last Drive of the first half so backto back punts forced by this forom defense perhaps momentum turning in their favor Henderson stands at his own 15 the pun clears away fair catch single by couron just shy of the 30 yd line Gorton will start this drive at the 29 and now you're seeing this sideline start to get into it we have a forom contingent right in front of us on our side of the stadium that's starting to get loud and maybe the biggest Drive of the game for forom so far as for the first time it feels like things starting to go their way in succession yeah and I wouldn't exactly call the forom crowd a wave the way we're calling it The Orange C and all that it's more of a small Pawn but making their presence Bel here a little bit and then this defensive line coming right off the field as matcha orski with John Scott his D end on the other side going right to the tablet looking at what they did wrong even on a good drive trips left 1201 to go in the third quarter Montes quickly throws to the right side it's thoron again up to the 35 a gain of five a good pitch and catch there like I said earlier you need the hitches to be working you got to get the ball to the perimeter on the outside because nothing's working North and South with big Anthony Hawkins in there you could scratch that the reception was Garrett Cody second and three from the 36 trips left the give to Ricky Parks met at the line of scrimmage and thrown to the ground the defensive line wins that snap and that's coming right through grad student Ryan Joyce's hole you don't expect that as the guy that started games for the Rams in every season since 2019 has played a lot of college football third down and four need the 39 for the first down two receivers either side park stays out there to the left of CJ Montes Bowling Green shows four on the line play clock at 10 seconds in ticking Parks back to the right side of montz play clock at five forom gets the snap off Bly green sends five Montes is swarmed he getss away Breaking Free past the line of scrimmage running right up the middle and tackled shy of the 50 yd line but picks up the first down CJ Mones for the first time today evades a sack and picks up positive yardage yeah their big quarterback making big plays right now you need the leaders to step up even when the guys around him might be breaking down a little bit David Eva coming off the field right now it might be a helmet issue you have to take a play off if your helmet falls off that's what happened to him at the end of that play first and 10 from their own 47 after the positive run from CJ Montes 1035 left to go in the third quarter forom trying to Surge back into this game two receivers either side High snap the give to Parks cuts off right tackle breaks one tackle and up to the 30 or the 46 yd line in opposing territory that'll be a gain of five and Joe conin told us Ricky Parks was going to be a massive impact this season cuz he's a complete back a good good pass catcher and a good run blocker along with being a good rusher Thom quickly back to the line same formation on second and four 10 minutes left to go in the third the read option given right up the middle to Ricky Parks he's moving the pile forward and he picks up the first down with a strong surge CJ Montes coming to the sideline giving them a play right now maybe he sees something in the defense throwing up hand signals You' like to see that from your veteran quarterback seeing things on his own Ricky parks with a little bit of a gate and his step will head off to the sideline and that's cuz one of his shoes came off so luid enters and that's not a bad substitute Julius luff over 100 yards today as we get a a good look at the one-w punch in the backfield first and 10 from the opposing 42 920 to go in the third two receivers split out either side Bowling Green sends three this the give to luid takes a hop right into the line of scrimmage now he'll try and work forward and gets up to the 39 yd line that's a gain of four some physicality there by L Bridge took about 5 Seconds to hit the ground there was a scrum in there that's what you want to see against a team that's categorized as more physical than you you want to fight back second down and seven the Rams TR Trail by 17 as they're now in Bowling Green territory after a couple p positive plays three receiver tight end set it's Reed and Gonzalez the sophomores on the near side luid to the left hip of Montes Bowling Green sends four Montes steps up and he'll look to run right up the middle slides forward at the 35 as he gives himself up it's shy of the first down marker but a short third down sit and the offensive line yet again giving Montes a hole and enough time to work through it a really good drive after a good drive from them the offensive line putting them together now helping this offense out it's spotted as third and four from the 36 they need the 32 for the first same Personnel out there beon goes out to the slot we've got two wide either side four on the line for Bowling Green two linebackers in the Box play action or the give to luid instead and he is met behind the line of scrimmage and driven back by a host of Bowling Green Falcons good defensive game planing there by Bowling Green maybe sniffing that play out there was nowhere for lri to run just an array of Defenders right there where the ball was supposed to be well coach conin waited to beat but they will send will Haslett in the punting unit out there 717 to go in the third quarter and probably the wise move with the momentum more on their side working back into this game no need need to take really aggressive shots now especially after you've had a couple stops earlier in the game they were stopless HL from Midfield boots this one to the near side Perkins is right there and catches it at the 5 yd line catch might be a stretch he put his hands on it dropped and then fell on it so all the same Haslet traps the Bowling Green Falcons inside the 10 for the second time today and his third punt inside the 20 yeah it's been very lowkey how well Haslet been playing as it is for many punters but he's a big reason why they're still in this game a little bit right now because he's been able to flip Fields when they need him to do it been able to trap them within the five not giving them the ball at the 25 with a lot of room to work 10 unun points for the forom Rams Bowling Green will take over from their own 5 yd line when we come back it's forom football on 90.7 FM wfuv [Music] hey guys Grace McCarron here with Jack Warner and we're two of your hosts for nose beds WF uv's one and only baseball podcast we'll keep you in the loop on all Tri State news with the Yankees and Mets as well as the big biggest headlines from around the MLB catch weekly episodes of nose beds on Spotify Apple music or wherever you get your podcasts take a trip around the bases with nose beds on wfuv Sports well you can take a trip around the bases or you can just take a trip right here to Bowling Green Ohio the Rams have scored 10 unanswered points and they have trapped Bowling Green inside the 5 yd line and Evan you're noticing a little bit of a shift here and the shift is coming in the trenches the defensive line for forom on these last couple of drives where they were able to get stops with a ton of pressure not letting themselves get bullied by the bigger offensive line that we saw all game and then when you look at the opposite side the offensive line for forom playing very well we even have Cooper lefon not in right now that's going to be Owen deut in there playing at right tackle he's holding his own along with the rest of the o line giving CJ the most time he's had all day to run or pass he's been using both options because he's finally been given them and dare I make a comparison to last year against the Mac opponent Buffalo I know we said it's two different stratospheres when forom turned the game around they got pressure from their line namely mat jorski who had two strip sacks and those strip sacks are takeaways that's something we need to look for on this drive if they can get a turnover or takeaway in one of the next couple of drives it can start to look like that Buffalo game when the grit really steps into play and talent doesn't matter that much at that point we've got 655 left in the third quarter Bing green starts inside their own five baslac in the gun gives left for Stewart plenty of space Cuts up and tackled from behind well after he picks up the first down as the momentum takes him over the 25 yd line so one play takes Bowling Green out of that little trap area yeah not a trap anymore that's been the theme all game doesn't matter where Willl sets them up they'll get right out of it so a fresh set of downs and more space to work with as jyson Patterson enters the back field three receiver tight end set baslac gives to Patterson running left and this time met off the edge looks like jorski met him right there the work match ofori was putting in on that tablet seems to be coming to Life coming to a reality right here as he slips through a gap not the Gap he was supposed to be in but slips in it finds a way to break up that run making himself a free player which we've seen from NY Perkins and gar Cody they're expecting to do with their older guys this season give them more freedom second and nine 550 and taking on our third quarter three receiver tight end set in a bunch forom sends five the quick throw from baslac connects with Malcolm Johnson Jr breaks one tackle as he streaks up the sideline shy of the 50 yd line adjusts his shoe but gets the ball up to their own 47 yeah Auburn transfer Johnson Jr finally coming to life here showing you that this Mac team is not only very strong but they have some athletes on the outside as well that have played some serious college football games came in a few years ago to Auburn as a four-star Prospect ended up being more of a reserve he's found a home here empty backfield fars side screen to Pages works up the sideline gets about five yards he's tackled by methani Paul Swinson and a flag coming on that side of the field I think the referee singing hold we'll see what it is we got holding on number 52 that's the left tackle Nick Rhymer transfer from Mary Mack he spent four years there as a first team all NEC guy and that holding negates but was a really nice reception on the screen by pis notably the only guy in rmer on this entire offensive line that didn't start every single game at their position last season second down or a first down and 20 after the penalty play action baslac rolls right and he'll just keep it himself along the right hash plenty of space tackled just shy of the first down by nyall Perkins and it will be a yard short of the first down a 19 yd run by Conor baslac that picks up the penalty yardage and then some well that's back to back Sho string tackles from n Perkins who's a very fast player who's making very big plays out here NY Perkins now lying on his back in some pain and this is the one thing that you're really worry about and I know that forom starting to to storm back into this game but you'd hate to see injuries in the first game Perkins is helped to his feet and he'll jog his way back to the sideline so it appears as if a crisis has been averted but now hero Sports called Nile Perkins the best cornerback in the Patriot league and for a very good reasons three interceptions LED forom 17 passes defended led the entire Patriot league and perk's going to be all good he got the wind knocked out of him right there you can see him grabbing his stomach taking the helmet off I was wondering how he got injured because it was a Sho string tackle from behind I guess that cleat of baslac get up into the stomach while he's taking him down he'll be in within the next few plays but you're absolutely right Lou that's a guy they need on the field twice now he stopped a touchdown from happening it's different when you have to keep marching down the field leaves rooms for turnovers leaves room for broken plays rather than having these big touchdown plays a guy who's 2024 preseason allamerican his 16 pass breakups are fifth and fourm history 436 left in the third quarter forom Trails by 17 and unfortunately in this drive they haven't been able to take advantage of first pinning them inside the five and then a penalty that set them back at first and 20 baslac immediately makes up all that ground with a playaction design roll out and just had had plenty of space along that hash yeah really good plays being run here by the Falcons they're executing them well but one thing that's been a positive steal for forom is the ability to finally tackle in the open field they're not playing too well not getting to the spot early enough we've seen the chains been moving but like I said they're not touchdowns which is what we saw earlier in the game both of those plays that broke off for big yards that ended up being n Nile Perkins Sho string tackles probably were touchdowns in that first quarter I think a continuation though from the trend you started to notice is for him getting more pressure on baslac and now he's been able similar to what Montes has done the last couple drives to improvise and find the spots break through and pick up yardage but this is a defensive line that even without Jack low who's injured to start the season has a ton of talent and a ton of depth we talk about Matt jorski the preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year don't forget about Sam brl who hero Sports called the best interior D lineman in the Patriot League clot Robinson was a preseason all conf guy you even go back into some of their depth pieces John Scott working into a starting role Michael Michael Thorne Colby Spencer Peter shaloo we've all seen make plays today for the first time in a while I think the last couple of years you've seen this dline be really stacked in who they can throw out there and that's cuz this dline finally started building a culture it started with the guy you bought it before Alfonso Dixon one of the only really good D lineman that came before conin was here Joe conin bought all the guys you just named who are pretty much now Junior and seniors and they played as raw 18-year-old freshman they weren't too good as 18-year-old freshman and now they've gotten that experience they've gotten a lot better you're seeing a product of letting them play when they're young and now you're reaping the benefits of them being good when they're older all four of the guys that we mentioned will be on the line for this second and one play 436 left to go in the third two receiver two tight end set for baslac in the gun takes the snap be gives to Stewart a burst of speed up to the 40 yd line now he met around the 38 and forom will push him back forward progress has him up to the 37 yeah starting to get good pushes again from this offensive line this team of 300 Pounders up front which is led by right tackle Alex wall waler 6'7 315 2024 Outland Trophy watch list it's taking this offense to a new level and moving them down the field on this drive and they've run to that side a lot two tight ends two receivers on the near side play action basac looking deep down the field forced back by brookl and jorski throws it out of bounds had a receiver along that near sideline and that was terion Stewart out of the backfield but unable to convert and again jorski and burkel in his face and they saved a touchdown right there Malcolm Johnson Jr had a busted coverage he was wide open in the end zone Alex keer has to run about 40 yards to pick him up it would have been a touchdown and a half but great pressure there by the D line Perkins still on the sideline it's keer and the sophomore Justin Johnson this the piter AEM Smith running left a great open field Tackle by Andrew Osman will prevent him from getting back to the line of scrimmage that had big play ridden all over it Osman comes out of nowhere cuts through the defense and makes the play yeah a lot of linebackers out there not doing their job on that play getting sent to the ground on their blocks but Osman coming in filling the hole as being the unblocked man which is what you have to do when you are that guy coming up and making a huge hit the play defensively will be negated it's offensive face mask on that one a weird play though you don't usually see one of those L an offensive face mask and I stand corrected this will help out for them here usually you hear a face mask and you immediately go Oh man what did this defense do nope this is a face mask going against the offense and this is going to move them back 15 yards and they're back on their own side of the field now I mentioned a lot of linebackers getting put to the ground there one of those was Mike courner who got face mask so second down and 25 from their own 48 it stps to the near side baslac looking right now looks middle has time throws over the middle and incomplete wanted Finn Hogan about a couple yards shy of the original line of scrimmage but a throw a little low and Hogan unable to come up with it and there's Nick pass casarella yet again around the ball not making a big play there but letting his presence be felt being a factor in that incompletion like I said a guy who appeared in every game in 2023 but only four tackles stepping it up this season third and 25 what do you want to see from this forom defense right now you want to see pressure pressure pressure match Waris got to lead the charge and they have to be in the back field you can't give them time to work we've seen what happens when they do jski lined up with Walsh Leger third down and 25 baslac forced out to roll left a man in his face he throws it out of bounds so the pressure initially by jorski who drove waler back ended up being kobby Spencer that gets in basel's face has no choice but to throw it away and another really strong defensive set by forom that's now three straight punts Evan and there is Jaws match orski he's shaking his head flexing his muscles coming off the field cuz he knows what he just did just ended that drive against Alex waler one of the best offensive lineman in college football not the FC FBS in college football period pushed him backwards 10 yard like a bull in a china shop causing havoc in that back field NY Perkins is back out for this special Team snap Justin Johnson runs out late Henderson's going to keep it himself wide open up past the 40 the 30 he'll pick up the first down knocked out of bounds by NY Perkins what a run by the punter John Henderson goes 30 yards and picks up the first down and that will get the orange wave pumped up the orange wave is definitely pumped out after that if you're the Rams you have to be set on a punt I mean you have a player running on the field as the punts being run I'm sure someone in these boxes next to us for the Bowling Green sideline saw they had 10 players on the field option that to a run play and it ends out working for them like we said you got to play clean when you're undermatched if you're forom that's a big misstep by forom who only had 10 to start out they sent Justin Johnson out there late it didn't matter a wide open hole on the near side baslac empty backfield snap floats over the middle incomplete P geese had it in his hands with no one around him and just dropped it yeah I guess the lights turning on maybe getting in these Falcons eyes that's the second time we've seen a good throw over the middle although there was pressure so credit to the dline but these receivers for Bowling Green got to help out their quarterback ballak a little bit and head up field after catching these balls and this forom defense has to buckle down a little bit here after that it's a moralizing fake punt that picked up the first down on Fourth and 25 second and 10 from the opposing 23 239 left to go in the third to give left to Stewart Cuts up the middle past the 20 yd line still on his feet finally brought down within the scrum of forom at the 19 Here Comes Nile Perkins again looked a little shaken up after hitting the punter after that play touching his mouth guard taking off the helmet maybe something with his mouth he's been taking a beating out here all game as have a lot of these Rams on defense still pushing barleta will join the defense late a third down and five now in the red zone at the 18 PES comes across in motion instead it's a shovel forward for H Fannon Jr gets inside the 10 driving past multiple Defenders it takes three to bring him down at the seven yd line and that's been all game Harold Fanon Jr looks like a men amongst boys when he has the ball in his hands it is not going to take one guy maybe not even two you need three to bring him down if you're forom and if you're forom no James Conway on the field right now that ball going right through the middle linebacker slot wondering where he is in a big situation like this baslac under Center first and goal from the seven a minute 30 and taking on the third quarter the give to tyion Stewart right up the middle Cuts right and Jes into the end zone touchdown Bowling Green seveny touchdown run by terion Stewart his second of the game and the Falcons up 33 to 10 here late in the third quarter Flags will fly is that's going to be an excessive celebration on the Falcons shouldn't be that big of a deal a little bit of a shooting celebration right there as they set off the Cannons with it but for the for Rams very odd not seeing James Conway in the Red Zone there a big player on this defense the biggest player probably preseason allamerican preseason All-American in the past preseason all Patriot League this past season not on the field right now but Bowling Green continuing the trend we saw in that first half of marching down the field and then punching it in for six for him elect to have the penalty in force on the kickoff that will make things harder for Zack long in just a second but for now it's Jackson clether out for the extra point looking to make this a 24-point ball game snap the hold kick clears the line and right through the uprights Cleaver now four of five on the day and Bowling Green up 3410 with a 21 to play and Evan hard to think of a bigger swing momentum wise and just game wise than fourth and 2 almost a certainty that you're getting the ball back a late substitution allows them to pick up the first down on a punter run that goes for 30 yards and then the drive falls apart and you allow a touchdown we were mentioning how good forom is on special teams are making us eat our words right now Lou showing that maybe that's the reason they might be down in this game so much right now you have to have 11 men on the field if you're an FCS team going against an FBF team you want the other thing to happen you want to be the guys working fake punts you need that magic you can't have it going against you Joe conin preached that not only were they going to have to meet Bowling Green in terms of playing strong defense playing strong offense they were just going to have to play clean football smart football and hard to argue that they've really done that today when you look at some of the pre- snap post Snap Penal and I think you can make a case 14 of the 34 points have come due to special teams obviously the kick return touch down to start the game but that's a seven-point swing that doesn't happen if they're all squared away in that punt and the types of penalties I like how you pointed that out because the penalties for Bowling Green are excessive celebrations and unnecessary roughnesses that those those aren't the worst types of penalties playing aggressive you know being Electric in the game you don't want to see lack of focus which are the penalties the Rams have been having false starts hold not enough guys on the field can't keep happening the excessive celebration forces Zack long to kick this away from his own 20 puts all of his might into it and gets it to forum's 10 yd line Hatfield Along The Far Side numbers past the 25 won't go much further though as a really strong Tackle by the safety Patrick day stops Hatfield in his tracks huge tackle there by Patrick day who's a very good tackler for this team 49 last season appeared in every single game in 2023 surprised it's the first time we're saying his name today L the forom offense charges back out there about a minute 15 left to play and right after some couple couple of strong drives we're back to the score at halftime they're down by 24 a 3410 game Mont coming off to touchdown Drive claps to the snap play action facing pressure steps up looking to run along the far side goes out of bounds shy of the 30 mon is doing what he can to pick up about three or four good play there by Montes could have easily been a sack slipping out of it the offensive line yet again with another good pass blocking set right there on that first down letting CJ run if he has to they call in a gain of three the clock tis under a minute here in the third quarter three receiver tied end set two receivers down low and LGE offset right just three on the line for Bowling Green but they send four from The Edge they give to luid up the middle spins forward past the 30 not much more as that dline right there to contain him great Spin and second effort there by Julius luff really only should have had one or two yards turns it into five a much more manageable third down forom NASCARs to the line of scrimmage third down and six with 27 seconds left to go now Montes steps up he'll PE peer towards the sideline clock ticks under 20 on the third quarter trips left with lers the back to the right the snap at 10 seconds Montes looking middle has some time now facing pressure evades as he rolls to his left some space in front of him pass the 30 pass the 40 now Out of Bounds at the 42 picks up the first down as the clock expires and when your leader is making plays for himself it excites the entire sideline everybody jumping up and down going to give CJ Montes some love and rightfully show rightfully so because this entire Drive there's been nobody open for him and he's been getting yards by himself well the Rams for most of this third quarter play really strong that punt run that picked up the first down takes some of momentum away but still the best quarter they've played so far best quarter so far and the offense is still looking very good you know Joe conin told us earlier today that CJ looks way more comfortable now in his second year we're seeing it in the pocket not panicking when that pressure comes around knowing when the receivers aren't going to get open on these timing routes and knowing when to evade and Escape he definitely looks more comfortable which is a scary sight for a really good quarterback Bowling Green 34 forom 10 one quarter left to play we send him back to the Ros Hill Studios chasmic Adams the one-on-one scoreboard update the one-on-one scoreboard thank you lose starting off with a third quarter update live the Patriot League's Own Lafayette is still trailing Buffalo home 23-6 through the third quarter shaky start for the Patriot League's preseason poll winner going to FBS the Howard bison lose 44 to7 in New Brunswick to the Scarlet Knights Ruckers making sure they are ready for a stacked Big 10 this year doubling Howard's first downs 26-13 the charity matchup is looking more and more charitable as this game goes on Wake Forest up two touchdowns late on North Carolina A&T including a Taylor Moren punt return for 73 yards in the third quarter ndnu looking good vers coach Prime in the Colorado Buffalo up 1714 in the second quarter exchanging blows going TouchDown for Touchdown all game the over better in your life is very happy tonight off the grid iron to the diamond finally the Mets saw win over the Diamondbacks 3-2 help by a Francisco Lindor 396 home run with the studio update I've been Chaz MC Adams back to L and Evan at Bowling Green thank you Chaz and you can hear Chaz on the one-onone postgame show with our studio host Chris Corino back to the action on the field Forum Trails by 24 we harped on it a little bit before we went to break but you go from getting set to receive a punt and if you score on that drive you potentially cut the lead to 10 to that big punt return or that big punt run and now you're trailing by 24 once again hard to think of a more demoralizing swing and this is a game that started with a 100 yard kick return touchdown yeah that is the worst thing that can possibly happen for a team overmatch going into a game you can't have 10 players on the field and I'm very sure someone in this Bowling Green Box next to me and L probably saw was only 10 guys on the field let the coaches know on the sideline who let their punter know he had enough room to take off because there was absolutely nobody on that entire quarter of the field like you said Lou such a momentum swing now it feels like all that momentum for him was building up which could have really exploded with any type of points on that next offensive drive that would have come but now you're here in this situation still on offense the goal is still the same go get points for them Trails by three scores 24 points with 15 minutes left to play Mont has picked up a first down in a QB scramble to end the third quarter now he's got six rushing yards today after losing a lot of yardage after multiple sacks he's been sacked four times today able to get into positive rushing yardage as he's found success with the scramble first and 10 from the 42 to open our final frame quick throw far side and spun down as Cole thoron Maybe a yard or two ahead of the first down or of the line of scrimmage not a big play there but keeping it on schedule you need positive yards sometimes you have to go out and just take that three or four if the defense is giving it to you they're up to the 45 second down and seven 1435 left in our fourth quarter Cody and Felton on the near side Allen motions to the right side of the line it's Thorton all alone Bowling Green sends Blitz the run right by Ricky parks and he's flipped over at the 45 not sure he got more than the line of scrimmage and that's a great tackle that's how you tackle a really good back like Ricky Parks who can break him you hit him right in the thigh boards make him flip over himself FBS tackle right there L third and six two receivers split out wide on either side park stays out there to the left conin said that Parks is an excellent offensive pass blocker when we talked to him earlier today the flag on the snap and a false start going against Forum that will take this from a third and six to a third and 11 and dare I say it again pre-nap penalties rearing their head I imagine it's not going to be a very pleasant conversation with Coach conin when we catch up with him next week well I just watched coach conin walk up and down the sideline extremely disappointed as he should be I mean it's third down and five against a really good defense it's already hard enough don't make it harder on yourself 1341 left in the second half trips left which is three on the line for Bowling Green they only send three Montes has some time looking deep down the field as he rolls right he'll take it himself a head-on tackle a couple yards past the line of scrimmage Donnie Stevens the Oklahoma State transfer knocks down Montes give her take about five yards shy of the first and it looks like they might go for it on fourth down right here CJ Montes on the field with Julius luid it's a big fourth and five or six here they've got a lot you got an injured Forum RAM on the field an opposing territory at about the 36 and this is Makai Felton a guy that we knew coming into this game dealing with some lower body injuries and he is going to be guided off the field walking under his own power albeit very gingerly Felton was a question mark on whether or not he would play today and he was able to suit up feels like his STS have been somewhat limited we've seen a lot of KJ re in that slot a captain on this team is Makai Felton he led the team out of the tunnel LED them in the ram Jacks has had the most energy all day he was second in The Patriot league with eight receiving touchdowns despite like you mentioned Lou having an issue with his hamstring throughout the entire last season still with some injury problems here down and four from their own 48 48 they need the opposing 48 it's two receivers either side and Lage to montes's right five on the line for Bowling Green they send all five Montes throws off the back foot he's got Lage spins forward past the 50 gets the first down at the 46 great play there by CJ Montes seeing pressure come right in his face and that pressure is coming from his right he knows without even looking that that means Julius luffer is open on his left because that was the guy who could have been covering it before taking a big hit gets it off dumps it to Julius who does what juice does and goes and picks up a first down through tackles luid comes off Ricky Parks comes on but we have whistles and a stoppage and now we've got a play being reviewed for a potential targeting and this would be not just a personal foul a 15 yard this could be a potential objection if it's targeting and Julius luid kind of laughing a little bit when he heard that the targeting thing happened I saw it was a very big hit Julius lff getting spun around by another tackler takes a big hit from someone he didn't even see during his 360 if it'ss up and around the helmet area which it looks like it is helmets down right into the face mask that's an illegal play standing over him afterwards that's the definition of targeting right there that might have been my luid had a little smile on the sideline knowing that Justice is finally serve for that play It's the senior defensive back Darius McLendon and I think worth noting that he was that lers was already being taken down by white and McLendon comes in to finish this hit dalen white spinning him to the ground and McLendon comes on to add some extra punishment and it does look like he connects helmet to helmet which should be targeted and Julius grabs his helmet right after the play good to see him walking around smiling probably fine right now because he's such a big strong back but he grabbed his head right after that play a dangerous play one that they're trying to get out of football bom already had the opposing 46 with the first down this would be if it is in fact targeting a 15 yard penalty that takes them up to the 31 and Darius Menda would be ejected from the rest of this game big swing of events there it should be targeting I can't see how it wouldn't be after watching these videos it's really just the dictionary definition of a targeting foul so the Rams with a little bit of help here but this trend of overaggressive penalties for the Falcons and unfocused penalties from the Rams can't keep going there's a difference in these penalties although this one a big difference because like you said L will eject a player from a game and we're looking at the monor right now they have the rules for a 15y penalty targeting rule which is forceable contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent or any forceable contact to the crown and I think you would say that Julius Lage defenseless there with dalen white spinning him to the ground luid no longer has his feet on the ground just being spun around nothing he could really do there so that should by the letter of the law be upheld or be called the targeting and Darius McLendon the FAU transfer there dapping up his teammates on the sideline kind of smiling I think knowing he's probably going to be ejected you know not too upset leaving the game with a 24-point lead but knowing that that was a targeting foul automatic first down number zero will be disqualified from the of the game well you heard the referee's call everything that Evan and I talked about I think they probably saw as they looked at that replay yeah right away you see the helmet down that is the first thing they teach you in Pop Warner now you have to be certified in Heads Up Football to be a pop warner coach because they want your face mask up they don't want that 1980 style of put our heads down and run at each other like literal Rams anymore L Darius mundon stripping down from his pads on the sideline as he gets some daps on the sideline foram takes over at the opposing 31 a fresh set of downs and it's Ricky parks in the backfield this is the give to Parks Cuts left met by the line about a couple yards out and moves the strum forward as best as he can call it gain of five nothing's been going all day north and south and that gain of five was only five because of number five Anthony Hawkins I've been saying his name all day because he's been such a force in the middle it's hard to run an offense when you can't go north 11:30 left in the fourth quarter three receiver tight end set Parks offset right snap play action Montes looks mle steps up he'll look to run along the left side numbers eyeing the first down as he takes himself out of bounds and we'll see whether or not they give it to him I think they're going to say inches short of the first and CJ montz there just making the right play yet again getting as many yards as he can third third and one just over 11 minutes left in this final frame they'll stay with the same formation it's parks to the right the give to Parks up the middle speeds forward met by a scrum at the line this is going to be Mighty close and from the referee walking out think he might be just shy of the 31 or the 21 rather that he needed for the first down they're going to place the ball inches short of the 21 the Rams no huddle as they go for it on fourth in inches snap keeper by CJ Montes plenty of space along the right hash lunges for the 12 yd line so CJ Montes picks up the First with a nice read option such a Savvy play there by Montes I think he was thinking before the snap even happened they're expecting this ball to go to Julius luid for one or two inches up the middle that DN is probably crashing let me keep this one the whole way and deceive this defense to get the first down Montes has Lage to his right to receive receivers up top one down low first and 10 from the opposing 12 clock takes under 10 minutes in the fourth quarter play action Montes floats middle of the end zone incomplete wanted KJ Reed unable to connect on that Crossing pattern offensive line Beat pretty bad there nothing Montes could really do a good job of keeping the ball out of trouble and throwing it out of bounds there a lot of pressure coming up the middle Cody Johnson limping a little bit you hope their Center's okay after that play the Rams Trail by 24 looking to cut that down with 952 left in the fourth second down and 10 in the red zone at the 12 yd line luid side car right of Montes claps to the snap steps up looks middle floats right side wide open but through the hands of Matt buron and Julius L will give him a little tap on the bomb right after that when you want to have that especially when it's in your hands such a good throw on the Run maybe a little bit out ahead of him but Matt Veron will be the first to tell you he wants that ball back Veron on the corner rout there eyeing the back pylon and had the step on the defender but just goes right through the hands and those hands way too far apart for that football yeah the ball a little bit ahead but you really want to get to that one especially if you're a 65 guy like map you're on with the ability to reach out third and 10 they can pick up the first down at the two yd line but just 12 yds away from the end zone luff steps up right behind the guard on the line so Montes in an empty Back Field and now whistles and a timeout called timeout Bowling Green the first time today that we've seen luid creep up behind the line we noticed that in warm-ups it's not something they do a ton and Bowling Green sees it and calls their first time out of the half you have to expect that they had a good play there Bowling Green seemingly calling that timeout kind of nervous kind of scared wanting to reset the defense as they saw luid step up to the line like you said a play we got a little glimpse of earlier today might be one specifically meant to be run in the Red Zone against this defense well we've got a media timee out but I think Evan let's stay here the Rams trailing by 24 it's a 34-10 game with 946 left in the fourth quarter and I think hopes of a comeback probably vanquished by that 30yd punt run the ensuing touchdown but still positives to take away if they can put together a couple more quality offensive drives and I think this would count as one yes very much helped by the targeting penalty by Darius McLendon but even outside of that montz has shown a level of composure that we just didn't see in the first half yeah and that's the composure Joe conin must have been mentioning to us how he seems so much more comfortable he knows when to just take the yards he knows when to just throw it away that's been happening this entire drive he even knows when to keep it and tuck it on a read option it has been all CJ Montes so far a guy who led the Patriot league in touchdowns with one interception 26 to1 is that ratio it's pretty insane for a guy playing on a team for his first season last year moving into his second getting more and more comfortable as he goes and let me get my calculator app out here because CJ monz has ended the first half with negative - 24 rushing yards he's rushed for 52 yards in this second half he's up to 20 Nets on the game Julius Lage only has four yards in this second half not really a knock on him he's only had four carries in the second half forom found success in the past game obviously but also with CJ Montes as you mentioned finding those Lanes evading pressure and scrambling for positive game yeah that might have been a halftime adjustment too maybe quarterback's coach riaa letting CJ know hey these ends are really good they're getting really far in the back field that's good for a defense but if you can take advantage of that as quarterback and let them get too deep and then fill the hole that they just left run it up in the outside linebacker SE Gap area which CJ has been doing for this entire second half now and it seems to be working for him on that point in the first half we saw a lot of Mones trying to scramble right and left and found himself trapped instead now he's stepping up past the ends and finding space over there we return for third and 10 from the 12 Rams Trail by 24 with 946 left to go in the fourth quarter Montes has trips left with luid offset left five on the line for Bowling Green with a linebacker creeping down to a couple yards behind so Bowling Green showing Blitz Montes piers in for the call luid goes back up behind the line 5 seconds left on the play clock three two one Montes does not get the snap off and a lot of confusion on that play Bowling Green showing Blitz this time around and it appears as if forom got the timeout off before the play clock went off so now for takes a timeout after bowling green I wasn't expecting the Rams to run the exact same play there you would think maybe something a little different because the defense should have been prepping for the play that they called a timeout due to so going out and running the same play Maybe Montes was yelling giving so much attention to the sideline letting them know hey this probably isn't going to work if you want to let me run it because I see what they're in and they're in a specific defense that's going to stop the play that we already showed them and that's why CJ Montes with 4 seconds left in the play clock took a shuffle towards the bench and shouted something and that's usually not something you want to see when the play clock goes under 5 Seconds usually means you're not going to get that snap off and if you do it's probably not going to work out too well so probably the right move there to use your first of three timeouts and you have to think he knew the play clock is in his face right over there in the end zone no way he wasn't looking at it might have been a very good veteran play by by Montes to take the timeout and let that one go well it's still trips left for forom Garrett Cody the lone receiver on the near side and luid side car right of Montes Bowling Green putting six on the line luid creeps up once again behind the line Montes claps the snap Bowling Green sends four Montes rolling right facing pressure tries to hop out of the tackle but he's taken down the fifth sack of the game and that's Joseph sip Jor J nothing really going on for Montes there all he could do was run around in the back field got up slow but seems to be okay right here really good play by trip Jr on that defensive side though this will go as a loss that puts foram back at the 16 yd line make it fourth and 14 zp Jr 73 tackles he led this defense last year can't believe that's the first time calling number three out today a very good Defender well Phil steel second Team all ma as he takes over lead linebacker duties for Daren Anders who graduated last season Rams going for it on Fourth and 14 Montes throws middle for Lage tackled right away by sip J once again so Lage brought down at the 15 and that will be 13 yds shy of the first down so for him down by 24 in the Red Zone they go for it not much cooking there Elite play there by S junor sniffing out that play being in the right spot seeing that the only player open for forom was LGE leaving his assignment and a secure tackle on someone who we haven't seen one on all day in number 15 Julius luid he'll take a seat knowing he did a very good job for that Bowling Green defense but like you said Lou kind of a kick while you're down if you're the Rams you know this one looking more and more Out Of Reach but you got to stay poised you really want to see improvement keep going you want to build on things that were poor to start the game make them better at the end of the game there's 851 left in our fourth quarter the Rams Trail 34-10 you're listening to forom football on wfuv [Music] [Music] Sports what's up everyone I'm Lou Orlando I'm will talent and I'm Nick Palmer together of the 12 games this season all 12 can be found on our YouTube page as well forom season opener a bit of a tough one going up against an excellent FBS opponent they trailing 34 to1 in the final 9 Minutes of this game but something we touched on a little bit the second half from CJ Montes I think gives you a lot of Hope for what we could expect once we get to the FCS opponents in this schedule even some of the tougher ones and Coach cins put together a pretty tough schedule you got CA opponents in Monmouth and Stony Brook you got an Ivy League champion in Dartmouth so it's not going to be easy but this is an FCS team that for should farewell against right and they didn't go into this game expecting the win but they expected to compete and that's what we saw in the second half Lou they competed throughout the entire second half no matter what the score says and that was mostly because of CJ Montes fixing things in that halftime room seeing that he should take what he can get every time the starter still out here for forom they give to Patterson Cuts up the middle ruled down at the 19 yd line a gain of six 30 and ticking on our final quarter basl still out there for Bowling Green the starters still out there for forom in this 24-point game second down and five a three receiver tight end set it's pagis to the left in the back field baslac looking middle facing pressure throws off the back foot it's brought in a nice grab by Jamal Johnson out of the back field that picks up the first down ruled down to 27 really good blocking there up front for Bowling Green Giving baslac the time he's pretty much had all day except for that little section in the third quarter falling into the fourth where the Rams got pressure for the Rams you want to tap back into what you had back then get matcha warski going get these guys to the ball 743 to go baslac under Center Smith comes across in motion and say it's the pitch left Stewart Stewart has a gap Jukes by a tackle and plenty of space past the 50 no one left to get him 20 to 10 Endzone touchdown Bowling Green three touchdowns today for terion Stewart and that will be the end cap on a very strong season opener for Bowling Green 40 points as they lead by 30 right now with 7:30 to play terion Stewart a very hard guy to bring down 4.8 yards after contact last season that's second in the nation no matter what division or conference you are in in the United States of America and he didn't get touched that time so it's very hard to take this guy down when you have hands all over him it's impossible to do anything if he's got free rushing leades for 70 yard touchdowns the halfback pitch goes for 73 yards along the near sideline terion Stewart 14 carries 163 yards and three touchdowns the extra point good by clether it's a 41-10 game and Evan hard to think that just 10 minutes of game time ago forom was in Striking Distance within 17 hoping to get the ball back and now it's a 31-point game that will all but SN out any slim chance of a comeback and it certainly ensures a very strong opening day for terion Stewart who up for the do Walker watch list the running back award and then also the Maxwell and w Camp Awards which go to the best overall player in college football and it will be an uphill battle for terion Stewart who has to compete against all those big stars in the power five but 160 yard three touchdown game is certainly a way to start the season I mentioned nobody touched terion Stewart on that rush and that's because he made such a good Juke on a really good open field tackler in Andrew Osman he had 41 tackles as a freshman last season gets a lot of Praise from everyone who plays on his forom team and coaches not even able to touch terion Stewart as he's shifting through holes rushing down the sideline for big touchdowns I guess if you're looking for a bright side here Evan it's that you get another long look at a forom offensive Drive I think maybe easier to evaluate the offense here than the defense when you look at all the strong players on the offensive end for Bowling Green a really tough defensive match up there for forom for this offense though which is trended in the right direction in the second half I think nice to see them get another Drive right and I think we saw what's going to be the key for forom which is a good thing to figure out and that's when the dline gets pressure we're doing well on defense we have the guys behind them that can fill it up as long as they're making the quarterbacks work kick Away by Zack long to the near side Hatfield Fields right in front of the end zone takes long the near side numbers goes out of Bounds at his own 15 so good containment there by Bowling Green and Mason Hatfield won't even try to go against those guys yeah no nowhere really for Hatfield to go on the last few returns maybe a hole or to had some room had some good returns nothing going on there we'll see if CJ Montes goes back on the field here if it'll be Jack Capaldi interested to see what unit forom sends out well it is CJ Montes and appears to be most of the starters Owen deuts is coming at right tackle for Cooper lefon that was an adjustment made earlier in the second half so still Garrett Cody Matt beon CJ Mones Julius slage Cole thoron on this first and 10 from their own 15 the Rams Trail by 31 quick near side screen for Cody catches at the 12 up past the 15 yd line takes a hit spins forward out of bounds FM's going to need their perimeter game all season it's their MO they like to get the ball into these fast receivers hands especially when teams are playing coverages where they're slacking off them at the line of scrimmage good to see them doing the things they're going to need to do well to succeed on offense it's a two-y reception for Garrick Cody as he's down at the 17 yd line clock ticks under seven minutes here in our final quarter two receivers either side Lage the left and Mones Bowling Green will send three play action montz looking deep down the field throws deep middle for Garrett Cody incomplete had a step on the Deep post fast just a little bit too far out in front yeah only three rushers there from Bowling Green gave CJ a lot of time in the pocket good pass blocking by the o line despite the mismatch five on three just unable to get that ball connected to Garr Cody the junior receiver Jack Bon will replace Garrett Cody here for third and eight from the 17 646 to go in the fourth quarter Montes claps there's no snap and he'll look to adjust the play 8 seconds on the play clock Lage stands in front of the line empty backfield montz time in the pocket now scrambles right up the middle Tak takes the defender shoulder Tosh shoulder runs past the 20 yd line ends up a couple yards short of the first and I think here they've got no appetite to go for it on fourth down now send the punt unit right out there you don't want to see CJ Montes take another hit in this game you telling him on when he gets to the sideline to slide next time in a game that's a 31 Point differential with only six minutes to go and you're going against middle linebackers got to keep your head in the right spot will Haslett back out to punt Haslett stands inside the 10 gets the punt away a line drive punt it bounces at their own 45 and takes a hop off the hands of pages he Dives and lands on it at the 20 yd line so that will go as a pretty long punt for will ha it the line drive goes through the hands of pagis forum's eyes light up almost chance for a turnover there but pis able to recover yeah Haslet buffing up his stats a little bit there getting his really good stats already on this game to go a little bit further with that long punt there good job by Nile Perkins being around the ball as he has been all game just unable to get the ball into the forom hands maybe switch up get them on offense headed into the Red Zone here it's going to be Bowling Green heading the other way with what looks like their second unit L and most of the main starters offer for them as well before we get ahead of ourselves the referees will stop this play due to whistles it's Lucian Anderson in at quarterback as Bowling Green takes their second timeout we saw Anderson back in the first quarter as he scored that 13 yd rushing touchdown in the QB power to cap off a score right before the first quarter forom we talked about oh we get another look at their offense maybe another long drive at last all of a minute and 28 seconds Bowling Green has the offense has the ball right back and now it seems that both sides are content to sit there their veterans their stars and play some of their second stringers third stringers and if you're for them or Bowling Green here you're still focused you want to see which one of these young guys can succeed you know it's a big moment for them although it's not a big moment for this game a lot of guys kind of like a preseason game in the NFL getting a chance to show what they can do in live action who usually don't get the shot Lucian Anderson in the gun as the second stringers come out for both sides first and 10 from the 23 give up the middle trying to spit forward won't get more than a few that's Chris Edmonds with the carry player timeout player timeout gives us a little bit more time so you look at some of the guys for forom defensively I think some youngsters that we probably need to focus on namely Terrence Jones thei a freshman cornerback coming in that NY Perkins raved to us about when we asked about hey who are some of the guys that we're not talking about not thinking about yet well he said Terrence Jones he calls him TJ and he said the kids a specimen has come along really well also showed some love to Justin Johnson who got some limited time last year in the secondary has played starting minutes today looking for a lot of these youngsters to step into a big role not unlike what Andrew Osman and methani Paul Swinson did last season yeah TJ Terence Jones the second was the 2023 District champion in 100 meter hurdles so a very good athlete right there in Texas nonetheless a very good state for high school athletes that must have been what Nile Perkins was alluding to his ability to be so athletic in different places and then Justin Johnson he said the sky is the limit for this kid he's got some work to do he's a young freshman but he's got very good intangibles that he will develop into being a better player later on Michael Thorn was the injured player he walks off the field under his own power albeit with a limp so Anderson will pick things up here in the gun for second and seven 539 and Ticking play action keeper left side for Anderson looking for the outside edge he's got it past the 40 yd line knocked out of Bounds at the 41 but enough for the first you had to expect the QB power coming from Anderson seems to be their running quarterback the guy they put in if they want him to be a runner and then on the forom side TJ Terrence Jones not a great job containing there in the corner spot kind of getting eaten up by his block letting the sideline be taken by Bowling Green also seeing some snaps for the Freshman Jaylen Dawson looking to work into this linebacker rotation this give up the B Gap charging forward as he picks up nine yards a really strong run by Markel Porter The Freshman running back from Dallas Texas would have been easy to confuse him for terion Stewart or Jason Patterson right there just flying through that hole making tacklers bounce off of him Bowling Green brought in a stable of freshman running backs this season they've got three or four to play with and they give Porter some run here this is his Collegiate debut they call it a gain of eight on the first Carry give right to him once again eyeing that outside edge shakes one tackle shakes another finally brought down maybe just shy of the first down but we've got a flag that looks like it's going to be a hold Tristan Wright ends up on his backside with an O linan on top of flag almost hits both of those guys that should be the hold now be a holding against Blaine Cleaver the junior tight end the holding takes away what was a negligable gain anyway for Marquel Porter they're back second and 12 with 423 to play our final frame Anderson in the gun three receiver tight end set the give to Edmonds up the middle lowers the shoulder drives right into the linebacker group and picks up three good push there from this second o line unit for the Falcons now sitting all their big name starters they move into the second string guys following in the footsteps of the guys who just came off the field and making a big push up front third down in seven 345 to play the Rams Trail by 31 the second Stringer in right now Anderson empty backfield throws left for Jamal Johnson makes the catch immediately tackled by methani Paul Swinson at the 35 and that'll be shyia the first Paul Swinson another guy n Perkins gave credit to he almost felt like he probably didn't have to because we watched him last season as a freshman 34 tackles an interception and three pass breakups for the now sophomore from Baltimore Maryland with a big hit there I think most impressively methani Paul Swinson ended up being the starting free safety for the Rams last year as a true freshman that was initially a spot held by D rice Williams who was a very good defensive back in his own right and methan Paul swinston just two games into the season took over that roll and ran with it yeah Paul Swinson shows very good instincts when he's out there playing the safety position Henderson's punt clears Cole thoron will let it go it takes a high bounce inside the five and that's where it'll be downed a diving lunge by the Special Teams unit Jaylen Tilman throwing his entire body at the ball and forom trapped inside the 10 yeah you want to see the little things be done well still if you're the forom Rams even though this game's over you know Cole Thorton seemed a little visibly upset that he let that ball drop at the five that's one in the Special Teams room you're going to get harped at for if you are this team's punt returner well Thom will at least not go to their backup quarterback they're going to let CJ Montes take snaps out here the sophomores KJ Reed Ricky Gonzalez on the far side Garrett Cody their starting receiver on the near side Ricky Parks stands to the left of CJ Montes first and 10 from the five play action looking deep throws middle Garrett Cody on a deep slant route and makes the grab pass the first down ahead of the 20 yd line that might be the reason they're leaving CJ Montes in they want to build this connection in game between him especially gar Cody but these other receivers get their timing going get them set up for when they play more beatable opponents in the FCS sixth reception of the game for Garrett Cody takes them out from inside their own 10 first and 10 from the 23 this the give to Parks takes a little hop and runs right up the middle swallowed up quickly by that defense using all of his might just to pick up a couple and a couple was really all that was there this forom still has their first team offensive line out there on the field still unable to get it done seems to be the second defensive unit for the Falcons in terms of their dline we've got the two-minute time out as we reach two minutes left to go in our final quarter the Rams trailing 41 to1 as they look to cap off one final drive to take away some positives from this game they listening to forom football on wfuv sports what's going on everyone I'm Jack Warner one of your wfuv beat reporters for the 2024 New York Mets baseball is in the air in Queens and I'll have you covered all season long as Carlos Mendoza looks to lead the amazings to a world series title in his first season as New York's manager to stay in the loop on every Severino bump day or Lindor bigfly follow me on Twitter at jackor Warner 23 I'll have you cover with live in-game updates exclusive media availability and postgame Recaps about your boys in blue and orange wfuv is your home for New York Sports Blue Orlando Evan Harkin taking you through the final two minutes of this 2024 forom football season opener they Trail my 31 and it seemed as if the game plan was let Montes come in get them out from inside their own five work it up to the two-minute timeout and then let the backups come in as it looks as if Jack Capaldi will take over the Reigns in the final two minutes yeah Capaldi grabbing his helmet from the sideline he's now over there throwing a ball back and forth with Pat Montgomery one of the backup tight ends might see him out there as well for Jack aalia 63 junor 210 malvin Pennsylvania we saw a lot of him in the scrimmages me and Lou he struggled in the first scrimmage but then when CJ montz left that scrimmage with a little bit of an injury had a hobble off Capaldi came in and led multiple touchdown drives that's exactly what you want to see from a backup quarterback the ability to come in and keep the offense on Pace when the starter goes down well kaliti has never thrown an incompletion in his collegiate career he's one for one with 32 yards as he entered during the Stonehill game ended up losing a fumble during that drive as well but Jack Capaldi let's not forget when CJ Mont first transferred over here from New Mexico state or from New Mexico rather it was not a guarantee that he was going to be the starting quarterback it was a QB battle between him and Jack Capaldi and Capaldi shined in the spring game and all throughout Camp the starting job was given to Montes but Capaldi a very capable backup in this system excited to see what he can do here against a very good defense no matter which units on the field for the Falcons second and five from the 28 as Jack Capaldi will take his first snaps of the 2024 season he's got Jack Kaiser to his right another standout during Camp kapal claps to the snap gives to Kaiser Jukes right ends up gaining a couple before he's driven back Jack Kaiser probably behind luid and parks in this running back depth chart but Jack Kaiser a guy that can certainly come in and provide a spill yeah a guy that they used a lot around the goal line last year especially when luid was tired with no part a Bruiser out there in the back field third and one after the four yd gain from from Kaiser the screen pass from Capaldi incomplete throws it behind Jack Betton that leaves it at fourth and one forom really just inches away from a first down right here and it does look as if they'll keep the offense out there with a minute 30 would have picked up the first down there had had Capaldi connected on that open screen route fourth and one from the 32 kaliy the snap give to Kaiser right up the middle picks up the First with a run that takes him up to the 35 Jack Kaiser is absolutely a back that can get you a first down if you're in a third and one fourth in one situation A guy that falls forward most of the time 26 carries 73 yards one touchdown last season was used a lot because of Ricky Parks being down and is hoping to get some more burn show what he can do out here the junior 6' 215 PBS he's got some muscle on him the first and 10 snap again the give to Capaldi some space or again give to Kaiser that space on the B Gap picks up another 5 yard gain clock ties under a minute here for them interestingly keeping their first offensive line unit in seems that their receivers are now going down the depth chart quarterback running back but we're seeing that entire starting offensive line including tight end Jeff C out there so keeping the primary guys out there up front 35 seconds and Ticking just a couple more plays left from this game Capaldi play action steps up throws middle caught by Jack benon no Defender ahead of him he's going to go all the way into the end zone touchdown forom the first career touchdown for Jack Capaldi and the first receiving touchdown for Jack Bon that's really cool to see the guys that aren't usually getting a lot of burn Jack petton that's going to be his first plays of this year he's not going to see a lot of other plays this year with really talented older receivers ahead of him able to say he scored a touchdown in an FBS football game against Bowling Green for the rest of his life now the same with Jack aaly wide open on a deep post route and that's a 60yd passing catch Capaldi's first touchdown Bon's first touchdown the Rams get a score at the close here Bennett Henderson's kick is through the uprights a strong debut for Bennett Henderson connects on his first field goal two for two on Pats it could always be worse Lou it would be a much worse day if your freshman you put all the faith in hadn't had a good one and that being Henderson playing very well now Bennett Henderson again there's going to be a lot riding on his shoulders believe it or not as a freshman taking the main kicking duty is over we saw last season how crucial kicking can be whether you think about peskin's big kick at the end of halftime against Buffalo a kick late to tie it the game winner against Lehi and if you want to go to the other side a Miss extra point against Holy Cross that perhaps influenced a two-point loss as they come up short in the two-point conversion because they needed to go for two because of the Mis kick this is obviously a low leverage situation mostly for Ben and Henderson but good to see him get off to a strong start yeah giving the kickers some love which they deserve these guys are scorers they're not just kickers Brandon peskin is a leader in scoring in for football history actually so given some credit where it's due to these guys that get overlooked sometimes and it will be Bennett Henderson right back out for the kickoff just 24 seconds left but for them able to end this game on a positive note Jack Capaldi and Jack Betton combining for a 60-yard touchdown pass and catch Henderson will charge Tona leather fair catch signal inside the five takes the ball out to the 25 for Bowling Green and you have to wonder still up big 4117 lead if they're even going to run plays here you think it's victory formation yeah it seems to be Victory formation because the ones are out there you wouldn't expect Conor basack to run a play here and yep it looks like they'll be setting up for it they deserve it after a really good game play here today 41 points scored Bowling Green has their eyes set on competing for the Mac it's going to be tough Miami Ohio a very excellent Team Toledo as well the knee of baslac goes to the ground and the rest all of formality 20 seconds need to take off the clock but some hugs some high fives some handshakes around the 30 yd line as forom season will open with a loss they lose to an FBS opponent Bowling Green 41- 17 despite the score there are some positive things but I think also a lot that for's going to need to work at a lot of stuff to work on and the biggest one of those I think Lou is going to be the penalties it's going to be cleaning up the little things you did wrong here today staying focused there can't be off sides there can't be 10 men on the field during punts it's going to be these little things that forom has struggled with since Joe Conlin's been here and since they've had really talented players terion Stewart had a field day rushed for over 161 yards three touchdowns averaged 11.5 yards per carry to open up his senior season Conor baslac converted nearly 70% of his passes with a 100 yard kick return touchdown by Justin pagis I think the most frustrating thing for for them as you said were the little things the penalties that punt team set where they didn't they only had 10 guys out there instead of 11 those are the things that I think are going to take off coach conin the most right you saw him walking up up and down the sideline very upset after all of those he told us earlier a key to winning this game is playing it cleanly we are outmatched physically we're outmatch talent and skill-wise we need to outsmart them but also stay focused within our own heads play our own game but we saw slivers of that L there was a spot in that third quarter a spot at the end going into halftime where they looked like they could really compete with this team and you want to build off of those good moments you saw from them CJ montz ends his 2024 debut 13 for 21 61.9% completion rate 159 yards and a touchdown ni Cole thoron Julius luers though is the star only ran for two yards in the second half as he wasn't really part of the game plan 112 on the day as well as some big time receiving Gams four receptions 66 yards Julius lefford was the star of the offense today against a fierce FBS defense easily the biggest bright spot and I think the biggest thing for's going to look at is okay let's see how good Julius LGE looks on tape against a Mac opponent a very good one a team that was ranked third in the preseason poll in Bowling Green and he was making them look like FCS players bouncing off of him so when you get back into that Patriot league and you're playing teams that you match up a little better physically a little better skill-wise Julius luff should be having a field day out there wrapping things up from the do here in Ohio once again forom drops their home or their season opener to an FBS fo they lose to Bowling Green 4117 for Evan Harkin in his football broadcast debut after a few years on the sidelines I'm Lou Orlando we send it back to the Rose Hill Studios Chris Kino and chasmic Adams the one-on-one postgame report welcome back everybody into the Bronx The Rose Hill studio here on the campus of forom University forom Rams in their debut on the football season lose 4117 on the road to Bowling Green the Falcons dominated in this first half for them seemingly made it more competitive in that second half but whether it was time or the other team across from them just not enough to uh really get any sort of result today Chaz yeah definitely joined by Chaz McAdams as well I'm Chris Karina appreciate the intro um there there was definitely an expected outcome in the WL column but I would say for me when you got into the mix of what happened in between kickoff and the and the end of the game the final kneel uh definitely a lot more disparity than what I anticipated at the beginning of the game yeah absolutely we're going to get some talk right now from our broadcasters on the game in Ohio it's Lou Orlando and Evan Harkin we're going to get them back in now uh I'm going to ask the first question here and the first question will go to Lou Orlando Lou looking at this game obviously not the start that they necessarily wanted but some resilience resiliency shown in that second half what kind of resiliency in that second half and just in general feelings in that second half say about the rest of their season going forward yeah I think there are believe it or not positive takeaways I think what CJ Montes did out there in the second half again we can say all we want about this is an excellent FBS defense I think everyone expected a little bit more from CJ Montes in that first half and whether it's because he didn't have a ton of help from his o line you just expected more and in the second half even when plays broke down what you saw is CJ montes's ability to extend plays to make something out of nothing and as luid kind of faded into the background of that second half it was CJ Montes that took over the reing for the offense on the defense like G harped on it big time what they got from their defensive line namely Matt Jaworski who didn't have any sacks today but really succeeded in driving waler back in the second half a little bit forcing some pressure that all culminated in forom cutting the lead to 17 and really barring just an absolutely awful error they should have had a chance to cut the lead to 10 and maybe we're talking with a completely different tone right now yeah definitely I couldn't agree more M mine shown I'm giving a shout to Evan real quick EV as someone that's obviously played some college football I want to talk about that first play the sports center play The Bleacher Report the n n of it all that that that 100 yard uh opening kickoff return how important do you think that was in setting the tone for the game not only because obviously it's FCS FBS so there's going to be a disparity this is kind of the outcome people expected win loss but maybe not the domination from Bowling Green that people thought how important was that opening a 100 yard return for bowling Green's uh Victory and probably more importantly forum's crumble well it was the most important play of the game by far because I like how you use the word dominating there that's what Bowling Green was coming in expecting to do dominate this game now if this game started off and they had a first and 10 at the 20 let's say they go three and out let's say they have to a field goal that's not dominance out the gate and then forom goes out maybe matches you know if it's more of a competitive game off the start instead of exactly what Bowling Green wanted which is them to get out with the lead early get the orange SE involved and start dominating off of that momentum that they're now building kind of thinking that they're a better and better team with every Drive starting off with that kick return I'm telling you Chaz if that kick return maybe went to the 30 we're looking at a completely different first half which would be a completely different outcome in this game thank you guys from Ohio once again the final from Bowling Green Ohio 4117 the Falcons roll over the Rams thank you to our two broadcasters there a fantastic job all night long on their first broadcast of the Season we're going to get into some highlights from this game this evening forom they started the half well a large chunk of yards on a big Julius LR run set the stage for this eventual play with CJ Montas and Cole Thorton S three Montes looks right fakes now throw along the sideline caught by col thoron into the end zone touchdown vom vom gets their first passing touchdown the season forom cut the lead to 17 there forum's defense had trouble all night getting bowling Green's offense off the field after a promising drive from the forom offense it was the defense's turn to show off their stuff Fannon motions closer to the line baslac in the gun a blitz comes from forom throws over the middle it's brought in but shy of the first down Finn Hogan across tackled at the 30 well short of the first forom forced the three and out Bowling Green offense they have what Bill ra bill raftery would call onions Josh Henderson and the Falcons run a fake punt on Fourth and 25 and convert leading to this play from forum's own 10 yd line the give to tyon Stewart right up the middle Cuts right and Jes into the end zone touchdown Bowling Green seveny touchdown run by terion Stewart his second of the game and the Falcons up 33 to10 here late in the third quarter that eventually led to a 34-10 lead for Bowling Green bowling Green's offense wasn't done yet it was tyon Stewart once again it's his third of the night and quite possibly his biggest of the night Stewart has a gap Jes by a tackle and plenty of space past the 50 no one left to get him 20 to 10 Endzone touchdown Bowling Green three touchdowns today for terion Stewart it was 4110 Bowling Green absolute domination for them not saying goodbye yet it was the passing game providing fireworks for the Rams steps up throws middle caught by Jack bon no Defender ahead of him he's going to go all the way into the end zone touchdown forom the first career touchdown for Jack Capaldi that made it 4117 for the Rams and that's where it would end 4117 was the final from Bowling Green Ohio bowling green the FBS is Bowling Green get off on the right foot and the Patriot League forom Rams don't necessarily get off on the right foot but I wouldn't say they got off on the wrong foot either no I mean start of the game got to be got to be got to be the wrong foot and what Chaz is referring to is the first play of this game was a 100 yard kick return that you know it brought the fireworks from the beginning to say the least yeah of course and I want to give a quick shout out to our guy in the booth Evan Hark and the color man forom forom RAM on former forom RAM on the grid iron for them fantastic adding for him uh in his first color spot for this team but yeah uh definitely that second half was way more exciting since the last time me and you got to talk on air and I think that it's a very strong showing for FCS for Patriot league for a like for the opponents that forom is supposed to face not for Bowling Green you know what I mean because keep saying this expected Bowling Green to win don't know if I expected him to win like this that second half is kind of how I expected more of the game to go again that first gut punch that they got uh via that 100 yard return there's it's very hard coming back from that as I said at halftime I love what I saw from CJ Julius laughridge I said lean on him more they kind of faded him into the back as Lando said really let CJ shine but we've seen this at MetLife on both sides we've also seen it with my New England Patriots o line o line o line you got to build from the lineman out and I really uh I I really think that the o line needs to toughen up a little bit uh if CJ wants to have success because again he can scramble you know what I mean at the end of the day one of the best scramblers if not the best scrambler in The Patriot league but if he doesn't have a good o line protecting him giving him that space to be creative in the pocket he's not going to be able to finish a drop back and it felt as you just said the last time we talked maybe the outright Victory out the window but it felt really especially with competition like Bowling Green across in them that a moral victory was still in play for sure and it feels like a moral Victory may have been accomplished here in this second half especially looking forward to maybe lesser competition in conference play yeah definitely I mean I think that there are no moral victories versus Bowling Green unless you're like the Citadel or like the Barnstable County RedHawks like my high school football team you know but like that would be impressive that win would be impressive exactly there like it's not trying to discount green but they're not an FBS team that is unbeatable for like via the FCS because it is football at the end of the day and and sometime like those top top teams that like they get the top recruits every year and like continue to have that machine going through them Bowling Green isn't one of those teams you know what I mean so you can have a breakout star a freshman that you've developed and is now a star senior Edge rusher like we saw in Jaws I I I really think that forom should feel better than they did in the first half but this is still a game that you should have had uh more in control of than you did yeah and I think maybe expectations aren't necessarily where they should be after such a crazy upset win last year maybe for them Ram fans yeah I could be I could be falling for I could be do falling for that logical fallacy being like we be Buffalo and they're better than Bowling Green it's like Chaz like shut up um there but I still think that the there should that that I wish the second half play is what we saw in the first half should would have could have but but some strong stuff uh out of laughridge out of Montes I I liked again I like I saw a lot of more diversification from Garrett Cody being able to see forom have any air game is is fantastic and the game in a vacuum is not a high note to start the season but if you watch the game if you were along with us with the broadcast you should be you should you should feel way better than you did uh at the beginning of the game and in seeing that second half looking at the rest of their schedule next week Central Connecticut then Stonybrook then Dartmouth how what what did that second half tell us about maybe the success the rest of the season that that sorry to cut you off but that that next three could they could go three and out and what you said in relation to preseason poll they were one of the only teams one of only three teams to receive first place votes in the conference that expectation and that promise probably still there even with a a game like this that maybe from afar isn't very great I mean yeah I'm telling you that I think haran put it put it perfectly I mean it's so hard to come back from that 100 point I I know I keep like the the horse is dead like I I can stop beating it but it it is such a miraculous playing football like there's a reason Bowling Green got a shout out on Sports Center and it's not because like the Falcons are playing great football it's because of a miraculous play like that so forom if if if I'm addressing the for Rams in the locker room it's like don't be patting yourselves on the back but also like don't be shooting yourselves in the foot you know you did fine I would say a net zero outcome treat week two like week one that was it fantastic Knowledge from you there Chaz this team will look to bounce back in their next game on the road that one's against the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut forom Rams prove to fall short tonight on the road in Ohio against Bowling Green they lose 4117 I really want to thank Chaz mic Adams my partner I want to thank Kurt in the back Tucker in the back along with just our fantastic will Talent Bobby cherini has his hand up so I feel the need to say his name and thank him as well I'm Chris Corino I want to thank everyone for listening another second thank you to Chaz McAdams he's been so fantastic thank you to everyone this is a production of wfuv sports have a great night everybody la
