San Francisco Giants could not complete the sweep over the Detroit Tigers losing in the finale on Sunday final score 5 to four a close game I was at that game so watched all nine innings very closely and the Giants just had it tough from the start Hayden bird song on the hill for them and he had his second straight rough start obviously he pitched in that Washington Series in the game the Giants lost and gave up seven earn runs gave up five earn runs credited today and yeah just a rough game for the young pitcher and you know he's 22 years old Giants have a lot of time to kind of work him into a role where he's more comfortable but Hayden bird song you know since you know well really these past two games has been rough obviously you know he's had a lot of good starts um you know his debut was really his worst start before that uh when he allowed three earn runs but consistently was two and under after that and so Giants do lose this game and they snap their four game winning streak and the offense in this game you know to its credit as opposed to to these past two games in the series was a little bit more alive at the start um the Giants actually were down one- nothing in the first inning Hayden Birdsong gave up a home run but the Giants matched Detroit score and more getting two in the bottom of the first but Detroit would go on and score a bit more the Giants had a comeback bid that fell short had a chance to come back on numerous occasion and they just wandered all their chances so let's get into the scoring plays and what happened in this game so Matt verling the leadoff hitter for the Tigers gets a lead off home run his 14th of the year off bird song and that's to left field kind of just snuck out of the out of the stadium uh or out of the the uh the field and and it's one- nothing Tigers so bird song you know getting roughed up a little bit early and um it's one nothing Tigers but one thing I will say that bird song did good in this game is he was working himself through full counts I believe I counted his first four strikeouts of the five he got were all on full counts so it's crazy to think that you you know what he's one pitch away from a walk and he's getting those strikeouts every time so I think that's one major you know valuable upside for Hayden Birdsong is his ability to you know stay composed even for a young guy stay confident and punch that Strike Zone even in full counts so yeah like I said those four strikeouts all on full counts and so yeah he ends the first Inning on a higho getting that strikeout Matt Chapman who really you know he obviously had that blunder at the end that we'll talk about but Matt Chapman delivered a lot in this game he in the bottom of the first inning gets that two run single to drive in like I said two runs and that makes it a 2-1 game so the Giants bite right back after giving up a run and it's two to one in the first inning but bird song Would struggle a little bit more obviously you know he's giving the Tigers a lot of hitable pitches um command I felt like wasn't really an issue right I mean yeah he's getting himself into full counts but he's not walking a ton of guys and he gives up a home run to Dylan dingler and that's his first career home run so so congrats to Dylan dingler welcome to you know home run hitting you know welcome to the MLB I guess um so yeah Dylan dingler gets that home run and uh it's three to2 Tigers it's a two-run homer and so yeah that gives the Tigers a lead that they would never give up um and yeah they made a few good defensive plays as well and they got themselves into some jams but um Montero was on the mound first for them and uh he he did a pretty good you know performance I can't fault the guy he's young rookie um and uh five innings start it was the first start from a Tigers rookie uh with at least five innings pitch in eight straight outings since 2022 so basically what that's saying is he's he's resilient and he's you know holding it down so you got to respect Montero um and so yeah the Tigers would cushion their lead a little bit Matt vering comes up again off bird song and gets an RBI double in the fifth inning that makes it four to2 Colt Keith gets RBI single and that would be off Eric Miller but I believe Hayden Birdsong would inherit that run so it was 5 to2 and bird song's day is over Eric Miller gave up that run technically Matt Chapman would come up again another RBI for him so he was the Giants offensive player of the game clearly um he gets an RBI single to cut that lead down there's a man on third um and that makes it 5 to3 Detroit Yar and carason comes up and gets an RBI double and driving in that run from third um I've like him at the DH spot you know I'd like to see Luciano there as well but I I can't fault Encarnacion you know he's coming into this role kind of you know last second he's got a lot of power a lot of Pop got a lot of size and so that makes it a 5-4 game that would end up being the final score um yeah he gets an RBI double that drives in the Run um but you know the issue was the Giants were grounding into double plays and Patrick Bailey has been very lackluster you know lately and I believe he has one hit in his last 32 plate appearances um or something along the lines of that and so yeah the Tigers Gunn down matt Chapman at the plate in the eighth inning and look I mean Matt Chapman great you know game all around I don't want to fault him at all but he gets a leadoff triple the Giants have the game tying run at third base with nobody out and Chapman decides to run you know as many would you know the reflexes you know he sees the ball feels the ball getting hit and it's hit to short uh they throw home he gets a bit of a pickle now luckily for the Giants Mark Cana who hit the the ground ball advances to second base so they still have a guy in scoring position with less than two outs but they could not score because Mark Cana just like Chapman was caught in a pickle and down in a rund down so Giants ultimately lose this game because of base running um you know they they don't screw up the base running in that inning I'm sure they tie it up you have a guy on third with you know at that point it would be one out if if you know they just threw the first and got Cana out and Elliot Ramos goes down on strikes and that ends the game will vest earns his first save of the year and so the Giants lose 5 to four Dylan digler first career home run is the headliner but Matt Chapman had a very good game other than that base running blunder which you know people are going to point to but he still had three RBI on three hits so a very good game for Matt Chapman um Tyler Fitzgerald also had two hits so he raises his average up to 315 you know obviously he's been raking ever since he kind of has gotten that everyday role and his op has just a hair under a thousand um but for the Giants you know it was kind of a similar story where you know the top of the order was okay uh the bottom was okay you know inaros actually was the only guy at the bottom of the order that gets a hit so I guess not really but Chapman you know really produce all the offense for them they don't have Chapman in the lineup they you know it's a much more one-sided game as for bird song I don't know do you option him to Triple A do you call someone else up I mean the Giants rotation obviously severed ties with Alex Cobb so you know it's not super loaded right now but you know obviously moving Jordan Hicks to the bullpen so bird song is going to have to kind of mature fast in a way and sort of you know get himself up to speed with the system and and kind of just work his his Kinks out a little bit um so the Giants lose and they're heading now looking ahead into what I think is the most important series of the season and that's against the Atlanta Braves a team that has been very shaky as of late um but a team that just stands right in front of the the Giants really in front in the Wild Card Standings Atlanta occupies the third spot in the Wild Card Standings the Giants are a game and a half out and Atlanta has uh been three and seven in their last 10 games so very poor play from a team that you know is consistently good um and the Braves actually lost today giving up seven runs in the eighth inning to the Rockies and that's a whole other thing but the Giants right now obviously are in the thick of that race talked about that yesterday with the Mets and Cardinals also on the outside looking in and the Braves Padres and Dbacks all in spots so it would have been a really good day for the Giants to win with the Padre's and Braves losing and the Mets losing uh but they just couldn't do it and it's a 5 to Four game you know it's a it's a frustrating game it's not a game where the Giants particularly played bad but it's a game where they just kind of you know they're against a a sub 500 team they're you know not really taking advantage of opportunities not taking advantage of good counts and good base you know or on base placement and have en Chatman on third I mean we can keep going back to that but that's going to do it Giants will play the Braves tomorrow um to kick off that four game series and they take two out of three from the tiger so it's a series win but it's not a sweep obviously you want the sweep but the series win is still good so let me know your guys thoughts on this game bird song with the L monio with the win vest with the save and we will see what the Giants are able to do tomorrow I'll um I'll see you guys when that game happens and uh let me know your thoughts see everyone later and go Giants
