every place we are able to go into we see kids change their mind want to change how they live when I change how they treat themselves or treat someone else it's absolutely amazing what Rachel story has been able to accomplish if you told our family all this 10 or 11 years ago we couldn't have believed it school shootings have been stopped because of this program kids have handed as their hit list and gangs of reconcile on the gym floor we've had so much positive response for the kids just saying please keep telling every kid in America this story because if it's changed my life it will change their life too I thought that it was just going to be another run-of-the-mill program just an average program that you come away and really hate I almost didn't come to it today be good because I feel that it was never going to help me and that wasn't really worth coming to but but then I actually I came here and I watched it and I came away hating it for a different reason because i couldn't find something to hate about it it every everything I heard hit the nail right on the head with my life and it made me feel ok I can't stand to feel it huh Oh it's just touched me in so many ways and I don't know where to begin with it if you have told us when this first happened 12 years ago that something good could come out of it we want to believe you seventeen-year-old rachel joyce scott was just that everybody says that we've seen all the news stories where they all say her friends that she was a joy at first there was the oprah winfrey show then Larry King and Dateline in his today show and on and on it went five books have been written to date about Rachel's life one in 15 different languages there were senators and congressmen opening doors to their state's governor rick perry in the state of texas opening up and just on and on this thing just grew and grew and grew maybe you're still tender enough to where you say you know i'll take a chance i'll take a risk i'll be a world changer i'll sacrifice i'll do what it takes to make the world a better place that's what we came today to tell you and we believe you're it now i think the the greatest reward has been the hundreds of thousands of students in just thousands and thousands of emails and letters and cards you know hundreds of suicide notes from from kids that are still living there's been school shootings that we know have been stopped and these notes we've received from kids saying i plan to blow up my school but now you've changed my life and saved a bunch of kids lives here at my school and saved mine thank you the one person that put all of this in motion was my daughter seventeen-year-old rachel joyce god who would think one person would have this much impact on so many so many people nobody wants to get the phone call we got that day on april the twentieth of 1999 saying there's a school shooting at the school that your kids go to and we can find your son but we don't know where rachel is we can't find her pop pop star fire to cut my pencil 6201 south here's what he don't they took my sister who had a lot of potential and she she had a lot of dreams and a lot of passion she made a difference in a lot of people's lives and they killed her you know well at first the whole situation just seemed hopeless I mean like a you know a complete waste of an innocent person's life but then we start you know getting these calls in these letters from these friends and classmates of Rachel's and they start telling us these stories about how Rachel was changing people's lives well I think of Rachel's friend Mark ma deferred this this tattooed guy that grew up on the streets of Denver and crack houses you know what I mean there's different as night and day Rachel and Mark that didn't stop Rachel from valuing market didn't stop Rachel from loving mark they care you know for care for me so much like the last page of that notebook you know that we had talks about just how much she loved me and how much of incredible person are you Hector nobody tells me those kind of things and I just I just give her a hug you know ty thanks flames race if she's been on my life you know a 21 year old tattooed freak so to speak then there was a guy named Adam Kyler Adam was a 17 year old jr. there with Rachel but Adam is a really special guy had a long disfigured face had a speech impediment and the kids at school they mocked him they named him Adam the alien but Rachel didn't treating that way Rachel treated him like a brother she was so kind to him here's what he had to say so Rachel always came up and talked me she was nicest person and I ever had in in the high school she was really nice every time that something was wrong I guess I was sad or so should we come up and talk to me I think what was wrong I would tell her and then she would give me things to do to help me deal with that if she feel sad I mean she's not there and if anything happens I can't talk to anybody because nobody else will go and talk to me because no one no one would talk to me before so why would they taught me now one of our favorite Rachel stories is what we've come to call the lunchroom girl and this little student at Columbine it was her first day at the school and Rachel had a pretty big impact on that girl's life that day listen to this amber sat down here in the cafeteria at a table by herself she said she felt it was the worst day of school she was still grieving over the loss of her mom and she felt that nobody knew about it or even cared Rachel and some of her friends were sitting at a table close by Rachel glanced over and saw amber sitting all alone amber said Rachel got up and left her friends and came over to where she was sitting Rachel introduced herself and then invited amber to come and sit with her and her friends for lunch amber said that she was a little shy and so she told her no I'm okay even though she really did want to sit with them Rachel saw right through it though amber said that Rachel got up got her friends and drugged them over to the table where amber was sitting and instantly Amber's worse day at school became her best day some of Rachel's writings were absolutely amazing now that we can look back on what was going on and what would take place on that day we knew that God literally was getting Rachel ready for the events of April the twentieth nineteen ninety nine and he did this through having her right certain things she was writing her deepest thoughts and her deepest feelings and some of it was so prophetic she didn't understand or know but what she was writing were thinking that was literally going to happen to her before she died on May the second of 1998 now Rachel would have only been a sophomore when she wrote this so she wasn't writing about school or anything like that but she writes one line in her journal that this will be my last year lord I have gotten what I can thank you and then two weeks before she died she wrote another very dark poem talks about I'm dying one of the most powerful things Rachel left behind that the family discovered was this picture of a rose bleeding drops of blood that she drew chest moments before she was killed and one of her friends Sarah Zola and the teacher the last teacher the last class that Rachel would ever attend actually saw Rachel drawing this and talk to Rachel about this picture and what it meant on april twentieth nineteen ninety nine the day that Rachel died approximately 10 minutes before the end of the class period I saw her drawing and I asked her about it and she said to me well mrs. Carruthers it's not finished but I was inspired to draw this and I said Rachel it's absolutely amazing would you explain it and she said well it's just my tears I'm crying then she looked at me and said mrs. Carruthers I'm going to be an impact on the world and I looked back at her and said Rachel I have no doubt of that was she an impact on the world I think so I'll let you decide sooo what did she draw that the last picture that day well it was kind of a theme Rachel had drawn these roses over and over again now the Rose is our national flower which is important to this drawing and she'd drawn it on notebooks and in journals many times growing out of a Columbine flower Columbine being the state flower of Colorado of course in the name of the school this morning for the last time she draws this rose and it's bleeding drops of blood and then above it she had something new she adds tears and eyes crying these 13 big teardrops now 45 minutes later there would be 13 victims Rachel had become one of those teardrops take this cup from me hate did not win on April to 20th of 1999 loved one as I start to bleed I long for that search ray from
