covering your health tonight there is a nationwide recall underway for some bores head deli meats sold at grocery stores it comes in the wake of a leria outbreak that's made dozens of people sick and resulted in three deaths news 15's medical editor Dr John lepri shows us stopping the spread starts in your refrigerator there's been a large recall of deli meat from a company called bores head cases of leria first identified in July of this year have been increasing unfortunately more people have fallen sick we have 43 hospitalized and three deaths across 13 states in the Northeast manufactured by Bor head a recall has been issued for these product codes they were produced between June 11th and July 17th of this year with these cell by dates so what is leria and why does this keep happening leria is a bacteria like eoli and salmonella it's found everywhere in a farm environment so it's easy to enter the food chain this can contaminate an entire facility if not handled properly fortunately most cases of leria food poisoning are mild the nausea vomiting and diarrhea improve over a few days however some can get very sick the bacteria can get into your bloodstream and infect other organs including the brain we're more concerned with those who are pregnant elderly or have weakend immune systems leria and other bacteria are killed with heat and that's why you shouldn't eat hot dogs right out of the package it's recommended you heat things like deli meats and hot dogs first to 165° also bacteria easily grows in your refrigerator so pay attention to the shelf life keep open deli meat and hot dogs 5 to 7 Days closed packages 2 weeks don't forget that leftover pizza and the rest and when in doubt throw it out so with this latest leria recall there are lessons for all of us reporting on your health Dr John Lei News 15
