when you're on a bus if you're in the same neighborhood you get to see your kids from preschool through 8th grade so you really get to see the changes as they grow up I've been working with kids for 70 years I started driving a bus because in the spring of 1999 we had a tremendous bus shortage we didn't have enough drivers and I happened to be sitting in the office one day and I said I can drive a bus and the woman who was the head of Transportation popped out of her office and she said you could I took the test in the morning and I've been doing it since then 25 years I get up usually between 5:30 and 600 because we have to be here at 6:30 the buses have to be checked out they have to be warmed up a little bit and then I bring the bus back here get in my car and go back to school because I work as a one-on-one in a fourth grade classroom and then I do the afternoon run and I'm usually done around 4:00 and home by 4:30 so it is a long time it's all based on relationships you learn everything you know whose birthday it is in the family who's having a baby when grandma's coming it's pretty amazing all the things that you know about families I think I can say that in 25 years I've never yelled at anybody I tried to be a safe grownup and somebody that they can come to I think Behavior it comes from inside and I think a lot of the time that if we could take care of needs and I don't mean wants I mean needs you know then Behavior changes and so I try to understand what's going on not get mad most people who teach have a kind of natural sympathy for children I promised myself that when I grew up and I was probably about 10 when I made this vow that I would always remember what it felt like to be a kid and how powerless you sometimes feel and how frustrating it is you know people say stuff like takes a village to raise a child and I really believe that that's true Community is so important the more involved in your community are the better for your community I keep saying okay I'll work one more year but every year at the end of that year I okay one more year [Music]
