Washington hotel workers walk off the job, join thousands of others striking across the country

Erica. Workers from most three hotel brands that you just mentioned went on strike and they say their sacrifice missing out on pay is worth their demands. Hotel workers, housekeepers, baristas, cooks and dishwashers walked off their jobs, protesting their workload and their pay. I think a lot of our members work can be invisible to travelers or visitors, but it definitely is the difference between having a good day or a less good stay is unite here. Local eight President Anita Seth says months of negotiations led to this latest offer from the hotel owners. They put 90 cents a year on the table which at this time in our country, you cannot, you know, those kinds of raises aren't even keeping up with inflation. Seth says current wages force workers to take on several jobs. And when I say people work two and three jobs, I'm saying they're working 60 70 80 hours a week. And that's not uncommon just to make, just to make ends meet one job should be enough for all of us. So we are fighting for that. Hassan Tegu is a hotel cook who says he has to work two jobs. So on average. How many hours a week do you work? I can say at least seven hours set says wages shouldn't be an issue because the hotel industry has bounced back. The industry has come back since COVID but our members, their wages haven't kept up. Numbers from the downtown Seattle Association shows 400,000 hotel rooms were sold in downtown Seattle in July, the highest monthly total since 2020. Surpassing the July 2019. Demand says these workers bore the brunt of COVID job losses. Now she thinks they deserve to reap the benefits of this rebound.
