Kansas Football's Season-Opener is Here. What do the Jayhawks Need to Show Fans?

what's up guys uh this is shy and I have my guy Carter sley and we're back for season two episode one of rock shock film room it has been a while and the expectations around this Kansas team are High I mean I had them going 11 and one to tell you how high the expectations are uh for this season and I know Carter and me have been excited about it we were just talking about it before yes sir yeah glad to be back um super fired up for season two thanks for uh for tuning in appreciate the support year one out of you guys and uh yeah definitely some high expectations ton of veterans on this team and uh yeah expectations have really never been higher so definitely uh definitely fired up yeah absolutely obviously Kansas plays Lindenwood and the uh expectations for them are to go in and pull the heck out of Lind I think the the line is like 44 points might have gone up since the last I checked honestly uh I I'm not expecting too much to be shown from this game but it the big thing is you know you want to start the season on the right foot you want to have an authoritative game where they show that they are you know the clearly the best team on field but also a dominant team you know I think you have to Showcase that and and I think Kansas will do that you know you what are you hoping to see from a game like this yeah I think you know like you said lynon wood not necessarily Powerhouse I think they were division two two or three years ago uh my former head coach David Batty his Alma Moder shout out coach batty but uh yeah no I'm excited I think uh I think this game should be low volume high efficiency for the starters because kind of a fine line between resting your starters but also getting them live game reps because sh is like we talked about you know before uh recording you know I think uh Illinois is going to be a really physical team again so you don't want the guys primarily the offensive starters say Jaylen and and Devon Neil and those guys just going into Illinois game two and you know not really taking a serious hit yet so I think uh I think hopefully he could be low volume high efficiency yeah absolutely let's kind of go into what we expect to kind of see out there obviously uh a team like Illinois uh not Illinois sorry Lindon wood you know their defense isn't the best I expect them to kind of struggle to to stop the offensive weapons that Kansas has between Jaylen and Devon and Haisha everybody else they have out there on that side of the ball um and I expect to see a lot of this I mean you know we we saw it this past year where Devin finds uh a nice hole and makes a nice run out of it and he leads it all the way back to the house to a touchdown and I think it's going to be a lot of that against this linen with defense that is smaller not as athletic and and just isn't quite ready to get through the elus of Deon Neil and danelaw for sure yeah I think uh I'm really excited to watch the offensive line and you know really just the whole offense under coach Grimes new offensive coordinator obviously uh coach Kay departed to Penn State in the off season but uh yeah really excited to just see the o line hopefully we could get all those guys in the front seven blocked up and you know I think at that point our skill players are going to take over yeah I mean obviously the departure of d m was a big and you know orage going to Texas A&M those two guys leave uh some holes on that line and and I think you know the the big thing is is the Bryce cable do is the uh Bryce Foster those guys are they gonna be able to step up and do uh the job as well as puny and and you know some of these other guys have done from last year ninski Etc um I think that's a big big question to ask and I'm excited to kind of see the combinations uh you know obviously as the game goes on to see who they put in offensive line I know um I asked about this Calvin Clemens isn't starting and he wasn't in the two deep because he's still recovering from that injury but he played pretty well as a freshman last year in that unlb game I mean after one or two holding penalties uh maybe we'll see him later in the game and uh I think it'll be really interesting to see you know how that left tackle spot looks uh for this coming game yeah definitely yeah I think uh I think puny that's I saw a clip of uh Fred Warner and Nick Bosa 49ers just you know two allpro guys guys consistently in conversations to be defensive player of the year you know I think week one or week two Fred Warner's miked up and he's talking about how good puny is and you know just to have those two speaking of a guy like that like obviously pretty Irreplaceable um you know as far as nitzki he was the only Center we've seen under the llight B era he was the anchor of the offensive line the quarterback um you know so I think I think that's those are two big losses then like you said uh armage Reed Adams that went to Texas A&M that's it's a big loss but I think those guys are are ready to step in fill the roles no absolutely and it'll be interesting to see and I know you wanted to talk a little about the defense special teams what do you got prepared for us yeah so I think uh I think on the defensive are you able to put the clip up maybe thank you yeah I think uh defensive of the ball again you know we're going to be bigger faster stronger than this opponent on Thursday and you know I think uh defensive backs we should just really be pressing these guys on the line of scrimmage um you know because if you if you let them get the five eight 10 yard gains just nickel and Diamond down the field that's where things can get uh interesting and that's when you got to keep the starters in maybe longer than what they should be so you know just really keep the pressure you see it right here just press man coverage we got two of the best quarterbacks not only in the conference but the entire country and um and then as far as Blitz packages you know you're not going to be showing much in a game like this I think just kind of Base uh base schemes all in all yeah I mean in a game like this with a buy game almost kind of what it feels like is what is the kind of mindset you go in uh you know obviously you haven't played college football in ad minute but you know it hasn't been that long and you know are you going in expecting to kind of dominate whoever no matter how good or bad they were at whatever level to play at or is it you know tempering expectations of yes I want to do really well against these guys but you don't know who they are because there isn't a lot of tap on that you know like some other vs definitely no I think uh you know big part of it is um you know these guys have been playing against each other the KU that is all Spring ball you know all summer workouts and now in Fall Camp they've just been beating each other up so they're finally getting the line up against someone else for the first time and you know eight nine months so that definitely uh brings the juice up and I think they're going to be excited enough to do that and again I think these guys know if if they start hot and get out to a hot start it's uh game's going to kind of take care of itself and and they'll be able to kind of move on the next week 100% And you know I think it's going to be really exciting to kind of see see uh what can come out of a game like this I think we we talked about it you know um and you mentioned it in this game uh you know the opportunity to make some plays from guys who might not necessarily have a solidified starting position or backup position or even guys who could be potential NFL guys yeah no totally it's you know I think guys that uh maybe aren't starting for KU right now this is a great opportunity for them on special teams you go out there whether it's run down on kickoff run and down on punt great block on kick return punt return or like we saw Kobe Bryant do a season opener of 2022 blocking field goal and yeah you could you could say oh well it's versus Lyon would like yeah we should be able to block it but if it was easy everyone would do it and you'd see blocked extra points and field goals when all these power four teams play against FCS schools so I think it's uh I think it's big for the guys that are battling for positions still on this KU roster and then a guy like Kobe Bryant and many others that are going to get a look at the NFL again if you could just put it on tape that you're a good special teams player and even more so that you care and you give 110% on special teams that's that's definitely a big deal no I agree I mean it's stuff that these Scouts and Etc kind of remember right like that hey you know maybe the opponent wasn't the greatest but he was still putting 110% out there and you know he was LE leaving uh you know the message that no matter who I play good or bad I'm going to come out there and put on a show and you know Kobe did it here and hopefully you see this j-hawk team do it against this lindawood team because I feel like it's rip for highlights like if this is the kind of season that we hope and a lot of jhawk fans hope it could be then it should start you know Thursday start bang yeah absolutely you know it has to be one of those things where you know you come out there and you dominate definitely yeah I think uh again just start off hot you know make it make it known to not only the conference but a lot of people all over the country that we're going to be a big time Contender this year and again just starts uh starts with the ve very beginning and be able to put it to rest early and get ready for next week 100% I think you said it best excited kind of see what happens from that that's pretty much my end anything to add Carter no pumped uh pumped to be back definitely definitely fired up um definitely excited to be doing this uh this segment again we're going to be doing it weekly and you know uh just be looking ahead to
