Charlie Vickers Breaks Down The Rings of Power Season 2 Scenes & Halbrand's New Look | Freeze Frame

hi I'm Charlie Vickers and this is freeze frame for British Esquire okay here we go the king of the Southlands turned himself in Lord father says he wants to negotiate okay so the king of the Southlands turned himself in so this is all part of sauron's plan the end of the first season you see the final shot you see Sauron walking back down into Mordor so this scene picks up up Sauron has been captured by Adar by his forces and he's taken into the camp and now he's ready to negotiate so let's watch him negotiate let my people go or yours will die my people defeated the men of these lands we defeated the elves who came to their aid we even defeated their allies the men from Beyond the Sea there is no one left for us to fear so the approach here for Sauron is to basically bargain with Adar and the key thing is that Adar doesn't know that Hal brand this character here my character is salum so basically he's going to use we'll see we'll watch he he uses the presence of Sauron as a bit of a bargaining chip there is one since galadriel's defeat she sought out a new ally an ancient sorcerer to instruct the elves in forging a new weapon out there one you first told her about a power over flesh that's good because a power over flesh is this um this thing that Sauron has been searching for power not of the flesh but over flesh and the interesting thing I like to watch here with Sam Hazel's performance is you can see there's this recognition of and confusion of him thinking no I killed Sauron sauron's dead he can't still be alive and we see that in the opening scene of the series with uh with Sauron in another form and you also see this flicker behind Sam's eyes of like hang on there's something familiar about you because he knows hbr is Hal brand but I think they communicate on another level Sauron and Adar so perhaps he feels the presence of Sauron in the scene do you remember those words a power that will allow him to use your children as slaves in his army once more set my people free and I will tell you where he can be found so you can destroy him and rid us both of his evil no your majesty you will tell me everything you think you know of this sorcerer now and I will spell the words from your throat Sauron is the sorcerer it's just neither of us are saying s if I die all the I now dies with me you can't kill me in time you will beg me to in the end so it's it's left at a point of Hal brand about to be dragged and imprisoned by Adar but he knows I think deep down he knows that adaa will want to find out where Sauron is where he's hiding and it's all part of sauron's plan to set the wheels in motion of of getting Adar to come and search for Sauron at the right the exact right point which may or maybe maybe does happen maybe doesn't happen I did not come here to toast the Elven Rings was a plead with you to make rings for men we picked this scene up Sauron in the guys of Hal brand has just been led into a regon by Kell brimo kellmore was told by gadriel not to let him in that he's been under strict instructions because Hal brand is she doesn't she never specifies why she never says that Hal brand is Sauron at the end of season 1 because she's dealing with the shame and guilt of bringing Sauron into the midst of the Elven Kingdom so all Kell bmbo knows is just like I shouldn't let this guy in but Hal brand uses the idea of the Rings he implants the idea in Kell Bimbo's mind when he's at outside and says oh haven't you heard about the Rings and then Kell bmbo can't resist his his hubris and desire to achieve overpowers any sense of like maybe this guy is bad news and he invites him in so when we pick this scene up they're just meeting together for the first time and Kell brimo wants to know about the Rings the three Elven rings that were crafted at the end of the first season he wants to know if they worked in stopping the decline of the Elven people and Sauron of course knows what they if they did work and if he doesn't know he's making an educated guess rings for men you saved the elves elves are not men men are Covetous and this is the first point after Kell bmbo has learned that the Rings have worked how br is now pitching the next point of the journey which is to make rings for the other people of Middle Earth men dwarves and here he's focusing on men Because he believes that that Sauron believes that they are the most I guess chaotic part of Middle Earth that he needs to order so this is quite a big deal and you can see that he's about to use a big tactic to try and convince Kell bmbo to do this the risks of of corrup ion are far greater even if I did wish to forge more Rings the dwares would never provide the me I think you'll find the dwarves facing a dilemma all their own what dilemma what are you talking about hrand here he makes a decision to reveal his true form to galmo to convince him what to do my name is not albr what when gadriel discovered the truth she cast me out and I dare not risk the same happening with you I I take it then you're not a king no not a king not a southlander not even a mortal what are you there are forces in this world beyond evil calbo and sometimes they send Aid in the form of an Envoy uh this isn't necessarily A Lie he is an Envoy a messenger in a way because he is not a human he's a he's a Demi God a messenger sent to bring guidance to the ears of the wise uh what sort of guidance mordor's rise was but the beginning at this very moment all Middle Earth balances on the brink of the Abyss soon every realm will fall Not Just Elves but dwarves and Men the darkness is growing stronger he's kind of using the Decay and decline of Middle Earth which is something that he actually loves dearly Kell brimo also loves it almost as as a a warning that if we don't make these Rings Middle Earth is going to fall to pieces and cinor doesn't know that Sauron perhaps has more Sinister plans and the rings of Power are our last hope of restoring the light you and I have work to do and then that work is making a lot of rings and he goes on to then take the shape of anatar which we've seen in in the next scene to try and convince him to make the Rings H brand so this is hellbrand revealing himself as anatar to Kell bmbo so basically this scene takes place when Hal brand has come back to Aon he's been set free from Mordor from that scene we watched before and he's basically been set free to go and find saon little does Adar know that he is Sauron so now he's been let into a regon by Kell brimo after basically telling Kell bmbo well the rings that we crafted at the end of season one they've they've worked calmore it's it's human nature because it his huis he wants to know so I remember filming this this was a really fun day we filmed this all in sequence it has a big lead up half the day I spent as Hal brand the other half I spent as anatar so he turns around and hbr who's been sitting in front of him having a conversation with him has has vanished hbr and this shot Charlie had to do a couple of times but he was so amazing cuz he did it it's all done in one take and all this stuff is practical effects the candles blowing out things falling over and you watch as the camera pans around and yeah it's all one take which I think is it's beautiful shot harand so the whole season is set up as the season between anatar who is Sauron the lord of the gifts and Kella bmbo so this is the first time we meet anatar he reveals himself to Kella brimo and I developed I guess quite a new character externally but he still has sauron's motivations on the inside which is this idea power not of the flesh but over flesh he aims to heal and restore and rehabilitate and reorder Middle Earth so this is him making his pitch to Kell bmbo and the whole look was developed for Kell brimboy tolking described anatar as being very Regal and fair so it was all about finding someone that had great wisdom and great power that would convince Kell bmore the greatest of Elvin Smiths to work with him to make some rings I have walked through the dusts and the deserts of far away lands I did this voice over like 50,000 times in ADR in in search of an artist possessing the craft to save all Middle Earth a storm is coming calmor I can bring you the knowledge none other possesses I can unlock your grandest abilities and when our work is complete never again will the world Overlook you as the m so a lot of this is real fire remember on the day there were quite a lot of firefighters that there and we had like these flamethrowers either side of me and I had to walk between them and the Flames were actually quite high it was very hot Zion of fanor but forever more Revere you the lord of the r [Music] I love what Bear's done there with the theme of of Sauron brought in but it sounds kind of orchestral and and really lifted and Musical and then you see the whole world behind Anar which kind of implies his Godlike appearance watch this next bit it's quite hard when you walk downstairs as as an elf because you're not allowed to look down it's one of the rules of being an elf and it means you trip over your cloak a lot so there's a I'm about to walk down a whole flight of stairs and let's say if I look down hopefully [Music] not you need not bow to me but I have beheld your natural form rise I work begins now it's all about this is all about appealing to Kell bmo's hubris and his sense to um exceed and achieve more than his grandfather fanor achieved and Sauron who is a master manipulator knows that and is's trying to work towards that what am I to call you I am your partner no more no less a sharer of gifts anatar anatar anatar is the lord of the gift Lord of gifts
