[Music] hi everybody right off the top it is 911 in these United States where we pause from all of the political rhetoric and remember lives lost lives saved and those who did the saving our video feeds take us now to Pennsylvania where moments ago President Joe Biden and vice president kamla Harris attended a wreath Ling ceremony marking 23 years since the terror attacks that changed us all forever this is at the flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville not far from where 93 crashed passengers in the Sky Fighting those terrorists who had taken over their plane and for that fight they paid with their lives former president Donald Trump will also make an appearance at that same Memorial a little bit later on today CBS news Pittsburgh reporter Chris D Rose joins us live from Shanksville Chris you are very close to where President Biden and vice president Harris are standing at this very moment that has to mean so much to the families who still gathered there 23 years later you're absolutely right uh the President and Vice President they're about 500 yards off of where I'm standing right now they're actually meeting with at the impact site right where the plane actually went down some 23 years ago killing the 40 people on board and really when the vice president and the president came out they it was a somber moment and it's been somber moments all morning morning been several hundred people that have come here to remember uh those victims and those who tragically passed on September 11th 2001 and I know we've heard a lot about politics the last 24 hours especially but everyone we've talked to here today politics isn't even a part of it everybody is here out of respect everybody is here remembering and nobody really seems to care whether you're blue or red or what party you belong to and uh former uh former president Donald Trump he's actually expected to be later this afternoon so really uh all national leaders are are making the rounds here to Shanksville it's it's moving and it's uh it's been a very uh somber morning but in a lot of ways very uplifting talking with these family members who are are remembering their loved ones uh read it I can't begin to tell you just how uh moving and wonderful it is uh to be here and be sharing this day with them we do not forget nor will we ever Christa Rose thank you that live report from Shanksville Pennsylvania just a stone throw from where the President and Vice President are at this very moment so let's now move on the map to New York and a city and we know this forever change when those planes hit the Twin Towers a flag procession and moments of Silence today marking the moments when each plane crashed then victims names read one by one outside the 911 Memorial P Fisher John Roger fer Thomas J Fisher Elizabeth Fox Pauline Francis Morton H Frank Peter Christopher Frank Colleen L Frasier Richard K Fraser Kevin Jolley every one of those names belonging to a life every one of those lives Liv belonging to a family and a family story you know this day like all days should always be bigger than politics and we got a glimpse of that right before the New York ceremony watch this moment fresh from what many Saw as a vitriolic debate last night vice president KLA Harris extending her hand to shake the hand of former president Donald Trump there so many people coming together on this very difficult day in fact Harris Trump President Biden and Republican VP nominee JD Vans all appear shoulder-to-shoulder at that 9/11 Memorial ceremony standing in the same row also Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also there to pay their respects well when we come back our video feeds are going to be talking a lot about what is happening relative to a hurricane in fact let's stay with that our video feeds now showing us what it looks like in New Orleans and what it sounds like you can actually hear that water there communities in Louisiana coming together today also because of things bigger than politics hurricane Francine rolling towards the coastline the system promising to bring damaging winds rain and flooding from Storm search and just we can see why those evacuation orders right now are a real deal at this hour and Reed we continue to keep a close eye on Louisiana but as we head into the coming days of course that storm surge down in Texas still packs its punched too with all the damage that came from it and that's what happened just a few days ago all the way up until this afternoon now we're continuing to keep a close eye on that system as it continues to track North right now at Max sustained winds around 90 miles per hour as it slowly but surely makes its way Inland later today all the way up into Louisiana so let's take a look behind me and let's take a look at current conditions right now here's where it's at it covers almost the whole state of Louisiana if you were to put it directly over that state and it's continuing to track North just around 13 18 mph Northeast at those Max sustained winds around 90 mph six more miles and it potentially could be a category 2 but right now we're continuing to keep a close eye on how this is going to impact that Coastline storm surge continues to be a big concern as well as heavy rainfall anywhere up to around 10 to 12 Ines could be expected in local communities around 9:00 tonight that's when it will make its way Inland continuing to track North into the overnight hours turning into that depression as it makes its way throughout the state of Mississippi all the way up into Tennessee now here's what it's looking like for the storm surge just into areas like Huma all the way over into New Orleans as well pretty impressive numbers close to 12et expected just south of Franklin along that Shoreline and as we continue to monitor that storm surge while the storm system moves its way North we also keep a close eye on winds too they're going to be damaging as it moves its way North all the way into the state of Arkansas into our Friday forecast total rainfall amounts they're pretty impressive we're talking about 4 to 8 in on average with anywhere up to around 12 in expected we'll have more on this in a bit and how this damage can impact those local community members but for now over to you Reed well it's all about warnings and watches Jess it really doesn't always happen that Governors declare a state of emergency before a hurricane makes landfall so you know Louisiana governor Jeff Landry means business when he does just that uh just moments ago he had this to say to his people about riding out the storm we stand ready uh to answer whatever Francine delivers to us uh tomorrow I want to remind all of the citizens that now is the time to begin to stay off of the roadways stay home and stay put the time to evacuate has now passed it is a time to go to ground and hunker down we are now no longer in the prepare for a hurricane we are now in the respond for a hurricane or to a hurricane So Gone from preparing to responding CBS News National correspondent Dave malov joins us live now from Home in Louisiana Dave you heard the governor there and the leadership there are you getting that same sense of urgency y that's what people are doing here Reed they are under a mandatory stay at home curfew and so people are mostly doing that you saw all the activity that we had yesterday and now we have very very few people out on the street the Civic Center over here is completely boarded up the only reason why they have any activity here at the Civic Center is they are cooking jumbalaya for the police department here and they have delivered that to the police stations but for right now they have everybody patrolling the road making sure that everybody is off the road and really right now it's all about infrastructure this is really the moment when we test the metal of a community's infrastructure police fire 911 people probably being told don't call 911 until it's an absolute emergency so they can prioritize the calls they expect yeah there are times when after you call 911 they won't come out because of the because of all the uh the wind that's happening right now so when the wind dies down but the infrastructure that you're talking about I was going to point you over here way in the distance you can see the power station here that is one of the parts of the power grid here in h that had a lot of problems just three years ago when we had hurricane Ida come through here a category 4 storm and read some people are just not fixed after that storm they still have parts of their homes that are broken they still have the blue tarps on their roof it's not something that just happens after a storm that it all gets fixed this is this is years and years that goes by and people are still reeling from the storms that come through Dave malov we can only hope that those empty parking lot spaces behind you mean that there are homes that are full and people are hunkered down there are best to the people in that region thank you so much for that report all right when we come back we are going to be talking about what you're saying about the day after the debate were your votes swayed one way or the other vice president KLA Harris and former president Donald Trump both want to know so we're taking a test of how you feel about this when we come back KLA Harris Let's Have a good debate you see you have fun thank you I imagine and have actually a plan to build what I call an opportunity economy I had no inflation virtually no inflation they had the highest inflation for years they wanted to get it out of Congress and out of the federal government and we did something that everybody said couldn't be done the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body they've destroyed the fabric of our country millions of people let in what we have in the former president is someone who would prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem whether you call that Harris versus Trump or the other way around those are just some of the major moments from last night's presidential debate in Philadelphia today both candidates and their running mates attending 911 memorials all across the country before then getting back on the campaign Trail tomorrow but on this day after that debate our CBS News campaign reporters also dotting the map asking you the voter about your reaction Nidia kassos joins us in just a moment but first Katrina Koffman following the Trump campaign from New York Katrina question has the Trump campaign really had much to say about how they felt about the debate well Trump says that he won this debate although he also says that it was rigged and he feels as though it was three against one last night all right so what do we mean by that that it was three against one he feels as though the moderators and kamla Harris were all CLS that he thinks it was one of his best debate performances ever um Fox News has actually now reached out to both campaigns to see if they will do a second debate and interestingly the Harris campaign wants to do it Trump seems more reticent he says that he feels the only reason Harris wants this rematch is because she lost and that's what a fighter does when they get knocked down they want to have another match um and he also is reticent about the moderators that fox is proposing Martha mallum and Brett Bayer he thinks that they were not that kind to him in their commentary after the debate last night so he said he'd be more inclined to consider this debate if it's someone like Jesse Waters or Sean Hannity or Laura Ingram Katrina Kaufman thank you so much for that little bit of an update day after so let's flip the coin now and talk Harris reaction to the debate CBS News campaign reporter Nidia kavasa from Philadelphia with more Nidia any indication of what this debate means to Comm Harris Reed to the Harris campaign this was a highly highly successful debate for vice president Harris this is according to senior campaign officials and Senior aids to the vice president they consider this a win for the vice president she went out there on the stage and did exactly what she was intended to do with the campaign had established that her goal for that night was to focus on policy focus focus on substance and not so much on his personality and at the beginning of all of these you know debate talks and debate prep her campaign had stressed that they were trying to fight for the mics to be unmuted so that they could let you know Trump speak and not necessarily be cut off by the rules established by the ABC debate but um and this was sort of to give Harris an advantage and to be able to go a prosecutor Style on Trump as the campaign was was calling it but they weren't allowed to do this but even then the Harris campaign said that she was very successful in you know getting under his skin and baiting him and Trump fell for this according to campaign officials who we've been speaking to all right so let's talk about someone who was watching and then got on social media right after of course singer Taylor Swift I did a little research here because she's more I guess in my child's whe wheelhouse than my own but 238 million followers on Instagram t millions of followers on X on Facebook how will the Harris campaign now leverage that support by Taylor Swift to their own Advantage well it's important to note that to the Harris campaign this was a complete surprise According to some of the conversations we've been having with officials but how they're going to be leveraging this well they know that um Taylor Swift reaches millions and millions of Voters from a wide range of Ages demographics and political Spectrum so they know that while people may not necessarily be so much in tune to politics but if they're following Taylor Swift they at least know that they can start paying attention to who exactly is Vice President Harris if Taylor Swift is speaking about her and Taylor Swift in her endorsement you know she endorsed and explained why she was supporting hars and the walls ticket but also made a call to her supporters to register to vote and also encourage them to vote early so this is a win for the Harris campaign because they know that they need people to turn out and especially the people who are following Taylor Swift and firsttime voters as well there was some instruction in her post about firsttime voters and how they do have to register ni kavos thank you so much for watching that when we come back we have our eyes on California firefighters there today not only mindful of their brothers and sisters and paid tribute to them on 9911 but also aware that communities are on fire dotting the map all over the state of California we'll have a live report from one of the worst and most constru fires [Music] our video Feats take us back to Kentucky for a fifth day as police combed denwoods for a man suspected in a series of Highway shootings police say this guy Joseph couch shot five people Saturday night near I75 about 75 mil away from Lexington the warrant filed in the court says couch sent a text just minutes before the shooting riding quote I'm going to kill a lot of people the reward for his arrest is now up to $35,000 the search continues annual inflation hit a three-year low today with prices rising the slowest Pace since 2021 fact the Consumer Price Index shows compared to a year ago gas prices are down 10% groceries held steady and restaurant and electricity are each up 4% it's encouraging data for the feds as they prepare for a rate cut expected next week jumping the map now to California and those wildfires that fill up a map and an entire state in fact look at this here over my shoulder you can see those marks there they show all of the wildfires burning right now at this very moment for every fire there's an army of firefighters out through all of that terrain let's talk about three major outbreaks getting most of the headlines a man now has been arrested for starting the line fire that's down in Orange County just outside of Los Angeles that one is only 14% contained it burns on today and then here's a side by-side look at the airport fire and the bridge fire as they've been called these two wildfires pose a grave threat to many Southern California communities there they are right there different locations same scene glowing fires and smoke Rising uh both though are not contained at this hour despite the best efforts of firefighters so let's bring in CBS News Los Angeles reporter Rick monz he's in San Bernardino County over at the bridge fire Rick we can see right now you're wearing that mask air quality must be a very big concern where you are yeah Reed this the whole area is filled with smoke I've been with you for the last 3 days talking about these fires here in Southern California and here we are in the town of Wrightwood this is a community uh known for recreation there's ski resorts here uh and so this Mountain Community was evacuated last night right now we have firefighters who are doing structure protection on the homes here along the State Route 2 that goes through this community there have been several homes burned and some potentially destroyed by the fire that came through here overnight it was the nighttime hours when they had to do evacuations for this community and we were here before Sunrise as we watch this mountain side continue to burn because winds were moving the Flames through the very thick and dry brush here firefighters doing their best on structure protection they say they were able to get the community members out of here some of them they had to go and assist them people who were not mobile enough to get out on their own so this community though well prepared for emergencies like this still firefighters are facing another day with strong winds and all of this fuel that can burn and they're hoping that more homes do not catch fire here Rick it's always such an eerie sight when neighborhoods are evacuated it's a quiet scene when only firefighters are there where are the people going who are under those evacuation orders there's four evacuation centers that are open for the bridge fire and they're scattered because this fire is burning on two counties Los Angeles County side so the San Gabriel Valley area is where it started and then it burned through Mount baly another popular area and then over to this side which is rightwood in San Bernardino County which is dealing with again the line fire as well so there are multiple uh areas where people can go evacuation centers for families to get safety uh and and shelter and stay there for the time being there's four of them open right now and then of course A lot of these communities have large animals or their cats and dogs that are in shelters as well Rick we see you have the goggles on to protect your eyes the face mask there you stay safe as well our best thoughts for all the people evacuated and the firefighters who are staying back risking their own lives thank you so much for that live report all right so let's jump the map now to see video to our monitors outside of Reno Nevada this entire region on fire the Davis fire this one's now the third largest wildfire in Nevada's history in fact we understand at this hour schools are shuttered kids just told to stay home and that's if they can stay home because evacuations are also underway in many parts of that area this fire is only 31% contained that Terrain in many areas very steep weather we also understand could fan the flame so Jess is checking the weather there at this hour the winds are the biggest concern especially in Northern California when it comes to that fire but I want to head back south real fast I know we're talking so much about fires but that's the reality right now over in California this imagery right here you see that fire retardant just on the camera alone it's going to recycle in just a second and you'll see the time lapse from the airport fire down in Southern California where just yesterday we were talking about sitting at around 8,000 acres and now it's up to 22 this storm or this fire came through like a storm and it was relatively impressive when it came to how quick it started moving just from the winds the winds are the big driving force of this right now especially dealing with such a dry season all throughout Southern California now mind you California had a great spring and winter season with a lot of rain and a lot of snow which created a lot of dry brush throughout the summer months now we continue to monitor the airport fire like you just saw sweeping over that mountain range all the way up into the bridge fire and the line fire all of these together are causing air quality alerts widespread throughout Southern California as we head into the coming days and you saw his report too wearing that mask that's the reality for many Southern Californians as we head into the coming days that smoke plume stretching over into Las Vegas with air quality alerts and red flag warnings still in effect now wind speeds today as we take a look at Future cast anywhere up to around 15 mil hour at Max for the most part in areas like Long Beach stretching over in San Bernardino and as we take a look below me one thing I do want to mention too it has to do with the temperatures daytime highs today all throughout Southern California a lot more bearable compared to yesterday in the day before where we were dealing with record-breaking numbers triple digits just two days ago and over in Los Angeles and now we're talking about 70s in the forecast there so better conditions when it comes to temperatures at least for the firefighters with their boots on the ground we continue to monitor the rest of the states though and we have more on the hurricane coming up in just a bit Reed okay Jess thanks so much for keeping us informed now talking about staying informed we are getting some news out of Washington DC that a government funding bill is at a minimum hitting PA lawmakers taking the weekend to sort of do a reset and do some Coalition building what it's about what it can mean to you and your pocketbook book we'll be talking to CBS correspondent Scott McFarland when we come [Music] back it is 911 in these United States where we remember lives lost lives saved and those who did the saving our video feeds Now take us to Pennsylvania where President Joe Biden and vice president KLA Harris attended a wreath Ling ceremony marking 23 years since the terror attacks this is at the flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville Pennsylvania not far from where one of those planes went down passengers in the Sky Fighting the terrorists who had taken their plane they paid with their lives for that fight former president Donald Trump by the way will also make an appearance at that Memorial a little bit later on today let's move on the map to New York a flag procession and moments of Silence also there today and also marking the moments when each plane crashed into the Twin Towers on September 11th this day and we know this like all days should always be bigger than politics vice president Harris and former president Trump shaking hands before that ceremony in fact Harris Trump President Biden and Republican VP nominee JD Vance all appeared shoulder-to-shoulder together at the 9/11 Memorial standing at the same row where Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also stood to pay their respects also at the Pentagon a ceremony today to honor those who lost their lives all these years ago fact defense of SEC Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke there just a moment ago and on behalf of the entire Department of Defense let me offer my deepest condolences to the families the friends and the loved ones of the 184 Souls who were stolen from US 20 3 years ago today here at the Pentagon and on flight 77 we have repaired the damage to this building but we cannot repair the damage to your [Music] hearts vice president Harris and President Joe Biden will be placing a wreath there at the Pentagon this afternoon after they return return from Shanksville Pennsylvania our monitors take us to a live look at Capitol Hill where today the critical house spending boat just collapsed speaker Mike Johnson spoke shortly after saying his team is going to work through the weekend to try to revive that bill by Monday here's what he had to say no no vote today because we're in the consensus building uh business here in congress with small majorities that's what you do that's what I've been doing since I became speaker we're having thoughtful conversations family conversations within the Republican conference and I believe we'll get there so so um people have concerns about all sorts of things that's how the process works and sometimes it takes a little more time CBS News Congressional corespondent Scott McFarland is in the Russell rotunda right now with all the details what happened here that caused it to fall apart imagine you sat down and somebody put a college Calculus exam in front of you and said go ahead and do it that would be difficult this is the math problem the house speaker is dealing with right now Reed he has lost more votes than he can afford to lose on a bill that has to pass that's a problem we are 19 days away from the government shutdown deadline the US House Republicans were keen on this bill that they'd have to pass with almost only Republican votes they have a narrow majority and they've lost some of their own there are a couple issues here this is a 6month bill to keep the lights on till March 28th some members of the Republican party don't like these shortterm bills at all they certainly don't like half yearlong ones that's a problem Democrats don't like it partly for the same reason but also because Republicans are insisting on this thing called the save act which would prohibit under federal law undocumented migrants from voting in federal elections Democrats say that's already illegal it doesn't actually happen and it fuels baseless conspiracy theories about 2020 and the coming elections so there's going to have to be a meeting of the minds it won't happen this week it'll have to happen by September 30th but ultimately it'll be some Coalition read of Democrats and rep Republicans coming together forming their own little group on this and passing something that's much shorter and much thinner to keep the lights on yeah Scott the speaker said that they would be working through the weekend building those coalitions what will happen behind the scenes and how does that work when they say working through the weekend they mean their staffs will be working through the weekend they'll go home for the uh the weekend recess um they'll have to come back here with some different texture to this bill it'll likely come back shorter they'll find some way around this save act dispute or maybe they'll throw a couple other sweeteners in there that Republicans really like but even if they can pass something with Republican only votes and that's a big if that wouldn't pass the Senate so closer to September 30th Reed potentially uncomfortably close to September 30th some alternative plan will come up that'll have bipartisan support amping up the tension as always on Capitol Hill Scott we're glad you're there to break it all down for us thank you so much so our video feeds now showing us what it looks like in New Orleans people in communities in Louisiana coming together today also because of things bigger than politics hurricane Francine rolling towards that Coastline in fact this system promising to bring damaging winds a lot of rain and flooding from this storm surge and you can see it right there at the banks Jess we can see why those evacuation orders are the real deal and of course we keep a close eye on Louisiana but just throughout the past couple days it was areas throughout the Texas Coastline that got hit heavy with all those bands as the storm St started to really gain strength moving its way now into Louisiana so as we take a look at the track and how strong those winds are now they're sitting at a sustained wind of around 90 miles per hour as it makes its way up into Louisiana throughout the next 24 hours stretching its way up into Arkansas too so let's take a look at behind me I want to show you where it's currently at and what's happening with the storms it really starts to strengthen right now our current update it's sitting at 90 miles per hour and as we head into the coming days that storm will continue to track north round 133 mph currently it'll gain some strength with those winds heading a little bit closer to our inland area so here's that track right now later tonight that's when it makes landfall the center of the eye slowly sweeping its way up into Louisiana impacting New Orleans and everywhere between storm surge is a big concern with this system as it moves its way up into Mississippi throughout the overnight hours early morning hours tomorrow that's the track currently but like I mentioned storm surge is a big concern especially in those low-lying areas all throughout the state of Louisiana just south of Franklin right now we're keeping a close eye on that specific region here as well as there just closer to that southern portion of Huma because we could expect anywhere up to around 12 feet of or 12 feet with that storm surge and impressive numbers with the rainfall totals too I'll show you that in just a second as the system moves its way North it'll ring out the rest of its moisture up into areas like Kentucky Tennessee all throughout Mississippi and Alabama too but right now our eyes stay very close and very focused on New Orleans in the surrounding cities and counties too anywhere up to around 40 in are expected with that rainfall total but we could also see up to 12 in in local communities we'll have more on that coming up in a bit for now back to you re all right J thanks opening statements underway in the federal trial against three former Memphis police officers charged with the death of Tyrie Nichols you may remember body camera video and that footage released last year showing officers beating Nicholls following a traffic stop just a block away from his home that video spark Nationwide protests and renewed calls for police reform the officers pleaded not guilty to charges CBS News correspondent Elise Preston has more from Memphis read opening statements are underway at the courthouse this morning in Memphis 12 jurors and four alternates were seated late yesterday and the jury is a mix of women men ethnicities and racist prosecutors say the violent beating captured on several cameras shows that the officers violated Tyrie nichols's civil rights then conspired to cover up their actions on the night of January 7th three officers are on trial two others have pleaded guilty today the government told jurors they would hear direct testimony from the officers who have already admitted their guilt defense attorneys argue that the officers were attempting to arrest a man they described as not complying who fought back with them the trial is expected to last at least 3 weeks Reed police thank you so much Florida police are also in the hot seat this morning Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill held a news conference to talk about this traffic stop that happened on Sunday he was on his way over to Hard Rock stadium right before the game when police stopped him for speeding listen I'm unfazed man I'm unfazed I'm one of those guys I'm unfazed by man cuz um I'm not the only one that that goes through that man you feel me like and where I'm from you know you typically see that you know a lot and you don't hear about it you know because not everybody has the same re sources as Tyreek Hill not everybody has the name Tyreek Hill or um not able to call a Drew Brooks or Drew Rosen house or something like that man so I'm re I'm really like unfazed to it you feel me it's a lot to unpack man it's a lot to unpack um it's a lot we can learn like I think in football how we get better from things is we wash the tape and we get better from it you know and this instance we should do the same you know like a lot of people want to critique a lot of people want to criticize a lot of people want to do this but um I think this can be a learning too for everybody Hill went on to say he still has faith in police but it's not ruling out he's not ruling out litigation here he has already called for the officers involved in the incident to be fired when we come back we have our eye on America and most specifically the state of Georgia and pole workers you heard former president Donald Trump last night Double Down believing the election was stolen despite many court rulings to the opposite that puts the focus on free and fair elections and the poll workers who manage it Major Garrett has his eye on America when we come [Music] back welcome back everybody CBS News I in America Keeps Us rooted in our core value at CBS telling your stories from your communities where you live all across the country so as we move closer to November and the elections the issue of election Integrity it's huge it comes especially as former president Donald Trump continues to double down and make claims that the previous election was stolen no proven evidence to that fact courts in fact have said it's not true but he continued to touch on it last night during the debate in fact watch look there's so much proof all you have to do is look at it and they should have sent it back to the legislatures for approval I got almost 75 million votes the most votes any sitting president has ever gotten I was told if I got 63 which was what I got in 2016 you can't be beaten the election people should never be thinking about an election is fraudulent we need two things we need walls we need and we have to have it we have to have borders and we have to have good elections our elections are bad and a lot of these illegal immigrants coming in they're trying to get them to vote CBS News Chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett spoke with election officials in Georgia about their stress and their anxiety but also about their convictions that our elections are conducted freely and fairly today is the election officials from Seven Battleground States convened in Atlanta last week to compare notes with less than two months to go speeding everywhere we met four of them one Democrat Jocelyn Benson and my title is m Secretary of State and three Republicans Seth blin City Commissioner of Philadelphia Bill Gates and I'm a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors I represent District 3 Gabriel Sterling Chief Operating Officer of the office of Secretary of State Brad raffensberger state of Georgia this year's election fills you with joy hope excitement I feel there should be Joy but there is some angst why the biggest thing I worry about is the possibility of Violence by people who lose we're daily receiving threats whether it's through voicemails emails social media or in person you personally oh yes and it's escalating and they're all rooted in lies and misinformation which is always very disappointing and sad but at the same time it's real Gates has spoken openly about his need for therapy in the face of hostility driven by election denialism this has unfortunately become a way of life and we've invested as a board in metal detectors in fencing in cameras I wish we didn't have to do this but we do and how are you doing I'm doing well I've gone and gotten the support that I need and I'm feeling great Georgia now gives every poll supervisor a direct line to report trouble the texting tool for every poll manager that will notify the state Elections office the County elections office and the local sheriff's office if there's an issue using a text tool let us know what it is is it somebody yelling at people in the parking lot or is it somebody with a gun voters say to me I'm afraid that all these illegals are going to vote you know I understand the fear but it's an unfounded fear this is a boogeyman uh it's not happening this is not something that people should be concerned about we're just not seeing it in any real numbers if you could with a magic wand dispel one piece of election related disinformation what would that be that there are magical ballot drops in the middle of the night that window of time from when the polls close until the networks are able to call the race is really where that window of misinformation can spread for me it would be the uh conspiracy theory that our tabulation machines are connected to the internet they're not it has all gone too far after the 2020 election Sterling chastised fellow Republicans for inciting unrest with election denying rhetoric I think that threat remains viable for 200 years the loser accepting the outcome and coming back to fight again in 2 to four years was the way the system works and we all accepted it we have to get back to that being the normal way of dealing with elections we've now endured four years of that same rhetoric and that's why I think all of us do feel a little bit of a heightened state of anxiety going into this cycle that it's even more possible than it was in those Darkest Days of 2020 that we could see that rhetoric transform into violent acts in the weeks ahead and we all have to brace ourselves for that I continue to be disappointed by many people in the Republican Party elected officials who continue to be silent in the face of these threats we cannot normalize threats of violence against anyone but particularly those people who are literally running our democracy a sadly necessary plea for a nation to return to itself for I in America I'm Major Garrett in Atlanta earlier today Secretary of State Anthony blinkin arrived in keev alongside British foreign secretary David lamby the pair met with the top Ukrainian officials including President Vladimir zelinsky to discuss military support for those troops battling Russian forces on the front line the meeting described as intense Ukraine reportedly stepping up pressure on Western allies to approve the use of long-range missiles on Russia so a lot to talk about here CBS News intelligence and National Security reporter Olivia GS is following blinkin in key Olivia meetings happening right now do we know what could come of these meetings in a real and concrete way hi Reed it's great to be with you here from ke where one floor above me secretary blinkin is in one of his last engagements of the day a meeting with the Prime Minister here in Ukraine and he's just come from a three-way presser alongside his Ukrainian and British counterparts where he announced a new $700 million Aid package for the ukrainians to go towards humanitarian causes repairing infrastructure that the Russians have demolished and de mining apart from that during the pressor he was pressed on the central question that has overshadowed this Entre ire trip which is will the US allow the ukrainians to use American provided long range missiles to strike at Targets in Russia and that answer did not come clearly today the secretary indicated that he was going to report back to President Biden with everything that he heard from Ukrainian officials today uh the foreign secretary David Lamy is going to do the same for Kier starmer Kier starmer and President Biden are expected to meet in Washington this Friday to further discuss this policy but Lambie indicated that this could go on for still some time with the UN General Assembly uh with more Partners to add to the conversation that happens later this month lots of meetings lots of conversations we understand Vladimir zilinsky to your point is going to be in Washington DC how does his trip there differ from what's Happening where you are where blinkin is actually coming to them one floor above where you're reporting from live right now sure well the ukrainians have made no secret of the fact that they really want this capability they really want the conditions loosened in order to be able to strike inside Russia to boost their negotiating leverage against the Russians uh the ukrainians have now taken a sizable piece of territory within Russia in the KK region but at the same time Russia is now receiving ballistic weap weapons from the Iranians which we learned yesterday that's going to give the Russians more flexibility to strike using their own long- range missiles within Ukraine so president zalinski is keeping up the pressure on his Western Partners to give him as many capabilities as he can get yeah the expectation according to some is that those Iranian weapons could be used within the next two weeks Olivia gses thank you so much as always just one staircase below where those important conversations are happening back here in the United States moments ago calire officials in the state of California gave new details about the suspect accused of starting the devastating line fire as it's called it's burning its way through San Bernardino listen to what they had to reveal as you can imagine investigations like this are ongoing from what I know about the investig the investigation techniques and the forensics that both calfire investigators used in our department are nothing short of amazing it's my belief that as time goes on and we allow them to do the critical work that they're doing that we will actually find out this suspect may have been responsible for other fires and I'm sure they're going to be many questions about that of the who what why when and where and right now I'll just simply ask for your patients as we allow them to do the brilliant work that they do calfire has been working so hard and we continue to monitor all the fires throughout Southern California this behind me you see that fire in on the camera this is the airport fire that jumped from 8,000 to 22,000 Acres just within the past 24 hours and we continue to monitor that closely throughout all of Southern California because air quality alerts red flag warnings and everything in between is still the Big Talk of the Town right now anywhere from Los Angeles stretching over in San Bernardino County that wind continues to sweep its way in from offshore impacting many communities with poor air quality right now the line fire now sitting around 32,000 Acres the bridge fire just north of that around 4,000 acres and that smoke continues to sweep its way over into Nevada as well taking a look below me real fast those daytime highs that was the big talk recently also when it came to the big weather Story down there we were sitting in the triple digits just a few days ago in areas like Los Angeles now we're talking about 70s so the boots on the ground they're dealing with a lot better conditions as we head into the coming days and we'll continue to keep a close eye on that as we head in to the rest of this week readed much to keep our eye on okay so let's look at New Orleans right now where as we see it is a very wet situation there you heard our correspondent Dave malov talking about people being told to just stay home in fact officials say the time to evacuate has now passed now it's just hunker down time and wait for this thing to pass we'll be watching it thanks for watching CBS news 24/7 y
