this is an instant analysis edition of getting over we do things slightly different what we do is we crack open a cold one and the silver King has a special beer I have been holding for this premium live event it is an energy City Brewing beastro key lime pie beer it is a Berliner style wise get it Berliner style so a beer from Germany although of course made in Illinois vintage welcome to the program do you have a cold beverage over there with you I do it's what I had for uh all in which is this uh three nations brewing in Texas Sucker Punch watermelon Berliner Weiss oh I didn't know that I we didn't plan it uh but that is fantastic I will also tell you I spent $8 on this one beer and it is completely worth it it's delicious so if you're in Illinois or you find this at a total wine or wherever you get your craft beer go ahead and give that a try Chris we have a lot to talk about today although of course it was another five match card for a WWE premium live event I think what needs to be set off the top before we go ahead and break this down match by match is WWE just kind of doesn't miss right like we go into a show maybe our expectations are a little bit lowered because there's only five matches or we think the outcome is going to be pretty predictable on on what we have on paper and yet especially for these European shows when you get that crowd involved and matches are given time to breathe man some of these things really do deliver yeah you know I I I guess we can get into it kind of more at the end but like this once again just it felt like half of a show to me interesting and it's this has been going on for a while now admittedly like we were also watching college football at the time uh so we're kind of doing a lot of things at once but like it was a good show I liked it but it also felt like the stakes were sure I don't know not not uh not very high in that there a lot of predictable things I think that's completely fair and we will get into this bit by bit and at the end like we mentioned earlier we will give you a post show grade for WWE bash in Berlin I'll just tell you because Chris mentioned it obviously it's a College Football Saturday week one of the Season uh right as the main event of WWE bash in Berlin was like 5 minutes in my game of the day the Florida Gator against Miami Hurricanes began so if you happen to watch football you understand why the silver King badly needed a beer and also why the show was a couple hours delayed from when we normally publish it which is immediately after shows go off the air Chris for bash and Berlin before we go match by match the visuals I thought were exactly my style like no no LED ring apron the barricades were blacked out they did have ads on them occasionally but the background was black and the ads were in white the crowd was lit faintly with red and yellow it was a heavy gold aesthetic to the entire show it allowed the crowd to shine not the bright lights and colors around the ring and you know what popped me I forgot about this right but hearing the Germans count Vine try for one two three it just popped in my head Cool Runnings right yeah me too as soon as I heard it the first time I was like oh I didn't expect them to do that but of course they're going to it's in Germany so I just enjoyed everything surrounding the show I guess before we go match by match here I I really liked the tunnel because like a lot of times in some of these shows they don't do the big LED boards you just come out of the tunnel or whatever but this was a very deep tunnel for an arena like these these European Arenas that they've done shows at they're like designed differently than a lot of the American ones which are like all the same and so it was a cool like deep tunnel entrance that just kind of made it feel different and special I thought that was a really interesting just kind of way that all set up yeah the visual of that was super cool for the entrances and it kind of added you know WWE has taken so much away there's lacking pyro in many situations these days they got rid of the AR Graphics I obviously believe that was a positive um and the sets are way smaller because they're selling out Arenas and stadiums so the fact that there was like extra Dimension added to this one you're right it did just enhance the overall experience but enough of that let's start going match by match now we will start of course with the main event of bash in Berlin but we're going to break this down based on order of importance not exactly the opposite order of the way it was delivered to us Chris let's start where WWE ended with the World Heavyweight Championship G defending against Randy Orton Orton's entrance was updated visually with some flashing lights as he slowly walked out he also got the camera filter that they use in the ring for the introductions but he got it on his entrance it made him look incredible he was wearing SummerSlam 2004 throwback gear that's when he beat Chris benois for the World Heavyweight Championship Gad did not get the same camera but he did get ludic Kaiser doing his ring announce ahead of the Bell the atmosphere was legitimately incredible to the point that they paused a few times in the early going to kind of soak it all in G wore down Orton in the ring early before Randy did a trio of table backdrops Orton hit the power slam but G uh stopped the draping DDT hanging him over the top rope Orton hit a superplex Orton did his old school eye poke and a draping DDT G stopped an RKO setup with a German suplex and hit a shotgun drop kick plus his signature Splash but he struggled lifting Orton for a power bomb because of an injured right arm he was selling throughout the entire match it took him five attempts to finally Power Bomb Orton Randy pulled himself down from another Power Bomb shocking with an RKO out of nowhere for a false finish Orton then rebuilt the steel steps parallel to the German announce table he drilled g into them and threw him through the announce table with a backdrop off the top of the steps which was a really sick spot Randy broke the count multiple times commentary still clarified the referee was being lenient G avoided a second RKO and maintained a sleeper hold even avoiding an attempted RKO to break it Orton finally escaped by Falling backward only for gun to sit up like a demon lock it right back in with a leg scissors and get a knockout Victory and title retention in 35 minutes G offered a hand after the Bell Orton shook it and he gave extended respect real recognized real type of stuff and as important probably as any moment gun has gotten during this run he also got to speak to the crowd telling the story of initially being hesitant to join WWE only for Triple H to tell him that if he became something in WWE he could then build something sustainable for European wrestling and he believes he is in the process of doing that now it makes sense to me more coming out of this match why they use the sleeper for him to win the title over Damen priest at SummerSlam but just like I said on that show I prefer a more impactful and definitive finish such as the three arm drop if you're going to go in that direction nevertheless despite any individual issues one might have with this match it was undoubtedly a banger and these two absolutely outdid their great bout from King of the Ring Orton looked strong and masterful gun came around dominant after taking out a legend with authority the selling from both of them was top tier particularly by Orton in the finish with the Sur surprised look as gun locked him right back into the sleeper and I loved the storyline element of the RKO not getting the job done which is similar to actually what happened in the other title match on this show there is also a key element that I do not want to overlook big medium man slapping meat these mother effers bumped meat in Berlin outside of the Ilia dragov Victory I can't recall G ever taking this much of an ass kicking yes he went to war with Sheamus a few times they had the triple threat with Drew McIntyre but in those matches it wasn't like he got his ass kicked here he kind of did by Orton the only note I have is of course that finishing sequence it could have been more exciting a long extended sleeper it kind of lacks energy but at the same time Chris it was a stylistic choice and not every match can or should end the same way G put his best foot forward he reminded he's arguably the best wrestler in the entire world Orton cemented his Legend status even further this was tremendous I'm at an a for the match I need to watch it again because I did watch it in Parts because it was happening during the Gator game but right now to start I'm at 4.5 stars I could maybe come down a little bit but I won't go up let me start at the end there since since you mentioned it too um we've talked on this pot about how the pass out submission has been overdone the last couple of years across WWE and aw and if I'm remembering correctly now that's the same way gother won against priest right pass out and the referee called it to take the title from priest and it's just so not impactful for one as you said I would always much prefer a one two three count but two what was the point why not have Randy Orton tap out you don't need to I could understand you don't tap out in a sleeper hole you go to sleep that it's a different move but like but like people have tapped out from it before haven't they I suppose to stop themselves from being knocked out they can and have but generally a sleeper hold you put someone to sleep for a knockout that's the primary purpose of using that maneuver it's different from like a rear naked choke I would say oh it's similar don't get me wrong but it's it is different I just would have in some form if he did a different move or whatever I know he does this like lightly like light lightly tapping his hand like with his last Randy tapping give gother that moment like like yes the handshake and everything after was great that did make up for it a bit but man if you could have gother say I made Randy Orton tap instead of just I beat him like I just feel like that would be a little more impactful now maybe you're right maybe it's just the nature of the sleeper and that's what they're doing but man it's like the least exciting way to finish a match and we've just it's it's a lot um so I'll just get that out of the way first great match I'd probably give it a four out of five um I didn't know I didn't know if Randy Orton had that this in him at this age to go that long in a big one-on-one match like that so credit to him they were fantastic crowd was great every you know a gther match is going to be fantastic you know that but but it really this really established gther as like a guy that they are fully behind and will be for a very long time I I just kept thinking back to when he was Walter when he was in Europe all that talk of whether or not he was going to come to the US or not or just stay over there to now get to this point where he's main Eventing shows he's the focal point of shows as the champion and I I think that's really cool things that people said he would never do in WWE right he would never come over to the United States then if they did they would misuse him and they wouldn't feature him the same and wouldn't allow him to be the wrestler that he can be and that's exactly what we're seeing the only difference is the name everything else about G and you know I sure I tried to use the German pronunciation during this podcast I will stop I promise I won't do that going forward uh but everything about him is the man that wrestling fans hoped WWE would get and feature and utilize properly coming out of Germany and Austria and Europe when he went on that incredible run on the independence it's great to see it it's super I remember when you went on your rant about the name change and the reaction to it and the Nazi stuff or whatever that was out there I was in Indianapolis for I think the iner BL convention it was like in the winter and I remember just walking in downtown India and it was really cold and you're just going off about how this is like not a big deal that WWE obviously thinks gther Walter is very important and people were way overreacting to that so as we're in this moment I just thought back to that one of my rare rants on this podcast that is actually telling people to calm down cuz usually on the rare occasions I do them I'm amping people up this is ridiculous and stupid and this person is doing a poor job and whatever the case might be here it was a rarity for the silver King where I'm telling everyone look it's a name do I like it as much as the other one no will you get used to it yes as long as Gunther is still Gunther excuse me G is still G as long as he's the same wrestler and he's allowed to be that guy he's going to get over regardless of what his name is that was so blown out of proportion from the beginning and yes when you look back on it now it's even more ridiculous now than of course it was then uh Keith Le tweet included Chris is there anything else that you have on this match because generally when we're talking about the main event of a pl we go on and discuss it for an extended period of time but this to me was just so cut and dried especially because Orton is on Smackdown so it's not like this is going to continue in some major way on Raw it was a make good match in kayf because of what happened obviously at King of the Ring I think they certainly did make good like I said they outclassed that match that they put together uh previously in Saudi Arabia I'm of the standpoint now where you know G can go on and fight really anybody on Raw there's a number of different people that could step up to challenge him Orton going back to SmackDown I just have like the sneaking suspicion that he's going to get back with Kevin Owens and right into the bloodline you know tag team title angle or something like that when really especially given what happened to KO on this show and we'll talk about that coming up next I would love for these guys to be like thirsty for gold having both gotten opportunities on this show yes I yeah I don't know what happened sex with gther there's just there's a lot of people that could wrestle but there wasn't there wasn't any story to this essentially so it's it's kind of well there was story there just wasn't any story to move forward right was very clear just kind of oneoff type of thing um I thought it was cool that Ludi Kaiser got to do the intro in Germany that was very cool yes he had a match on Smackdown but it was it was good that he got to be in the pay-per-view and I liked um gother talking in German on the show at the end of the crowd and just just showing it and going with it as opposed to it being some social media thing with captions or whatever I just anytime the international athletes just speak in their native language in front of the crowd you can tell it's so appreciated by them and again Gunther's not from Germany but that all seemed very cool for everybody involved absolutely right across the border still speaks German um I still believe made his career in Germany even though of course he's Austrian uh but certainly a very unique and exciting moment for him let's move to the match that actually opened the show the WWE Championship on the line Cody rhods defending against Kevin Owens now before we talk about Saturday we need to discuss Friday because there was a face Toof face to open hour or two of SmackDown Cody denied a KO contention that he hurt his knee during the European tour then he asked about last week when it looked like Owens was planning to Blind sign him with the title Owens denied and mentioned having a close relationship with Dusty Road saying he would never do that to Cody Cody thought KO might be angry that rhs got full credit for Shifting the industry by leaving WWE when what he actually did was walk in Ko's footsteps Owens repeated that Cody is clearly hurt pointing out he didn't take a knee on his entrance Rhoden suggested that Owens was trying to get out of the match again looking for an excuse Owens talked about his Universal Championship win and how it was tainted by Triple H and never living that down he didn't want the same thing to happen if rhods was injured and he won this match Cody got heated insisting his knee is 100% he thought KO might be angry he had to share the Wrestlemania 38 Spotlight when Cody returned then he said he loved Owen straight up and he asked are we still going to be friends should I win on Saturday KO threw the microphone down he whispered something in Cody's ear it affected him emotionally and we found out on the countdown show that he said remember you asked for this there was also an interview between them that was extremely well done on that countdown show I wish it wasn't saved for the countdown show in fact Chris both of these segments should have happened earlier the smackdown confrontation from Friday should have happened last week the interview should have then aired on Friday the Grayson Waller effect could have sewn division this week with the tag team match in the main event it just feels like the booking was backwards with the injection of these storyline elements coming too late and it was very similar we pontificated about this on Tuesday it was extremely similar to what happened in the AJ Styles Feud ahead of backlash where they didn't give us much going in we got a big go home moment and then when they rematched is when we got this you know deeper and thicker storyline I enjoyed the realism elements how both guys handled the segment left questions and possibilities for Saturday but I just could not shake the thought that it happened a week later than it should have yeah and this is the build for this is something I was very critical of the whole time because there was just nothing there they gave us a little bit on this I thought the the interview with Graves was really good I don't know why it was on the pre-show it wasn't even that long um right I mean you put on the pre-show because they're already taking up a segment on Smackdown I get that but but you can replay it on on the pre-show and air portion of it on you can work around some things and like there in the end like there were enough pieces there but man I was not excited coming into this match because just because the entire thing was like are we still G to be friends are we friends Kevin Owens feels bad for himself and it's like okay let let's hope something happens in this match at least because not much had happened building up to now this match opened the show different crowd from Leon obviously but the chance and the standing ovation that they gave these guys at the Bell was insane one of them was of The Fray excuse me if I got that wrong that translates to in the face so I guess it's kind of like let go also there were some song lyrics and stuff like Leon handshake to start Owens countered everything rhs did like Scouting Report style Cody latched a figure four leg lock KO hit a frog Splash off the ring apron outside rhs turned a pop-up Power Bomb push into a Cody cutter Owens responded breaking out a fisherman's neck breaker over his knee KO countered herana with a rolling senton off the middle rope they transitioned to popup Power Bomb into disaster kick into stunner into a landed Crossroads for a false finish Owens then countered a superplex into an avalanche Fisherman's Brain Buster rhs tried a double jump springboard but his knee buckled on the top rope Koo initially ran over to chop out the knee but he stopped himself and then Cody pushed him away when KO checked on him so he kicked the knee outside Owens again stopped himself this time from doing an apron Power Bomb he overheard and yelled back at commentary questioning him but he hit the stunner inside anyway he got a false finish Cody then countered a pop-up Power Bomb attempt into two Crossroads but Owens countered a third into a stunner for another false finish rhs got knees up to stop a Swanton bomb and hit Crossroads one more time to retain the title in 23 minutes Cody consoled KO after the Bell Owens ultimately hugged him after a little bit of hesitation he pushed the camera away it was right in their faces and he raised rh's hand but he actually refused to allow Cody to do the same to him obviously because he lost the match the absolute final sequence with the Swanton for me it left something to be desired and Chris we've discussed extensively on this show how spamming Crossroads has just completely devalued the move as a finisher Roman Reigns was spoton about that and he should know because it happened with the spear Cody needs a super finisher he has to have something to enhance his Arsenal so that when he's fighting someone that they want to put over stronger okay he hits the crossroads twice and then he does this other finisher and that is what he uses to win other than that minor issue I got to say again for the second straight match this thing was a total Banger I loved the way it was put together with the familiarity aspect playing a role early the guy breaking out some unique moves knowing they would need that little extra to beat the other guy owens's acting not going after Rad's knee initially that was on point if I could change One Singular aspect of the match forget the crossroad stuff I would have let him do the apron Power Bomb it's devastating but it's not dirty and it's not cheap it's one thing to be an take out his knee it's another to not do everything you can to win the match and title that was a little bit for me of like Bailey with the Kendo stick if that makes sense other than that though this went exactly as expected we discussed all the potential heel turn possibilities only to ultimately land during the ultimate preview on nothing happening and that's exactly how this went down it doesn't mean that frustration won't grow and he won't think differently come Friday or at some point in the future but there wasn't enough animus for it to happen right here definitely an a match again right for me on the border of 4.25 stars and 4.5 Stars I think I'm going to elevate it to the ladder because of the outstanding crowd and Cody he sold immensely throughout this ENT ire match I thought it was extremely well done yeah really good match that played out the way we expected with Kevin Owens having a chance to do something and not doing it in this case it was a Power Bomb we thought it could be that we thought it could be a a a title hit to the head or something like that didn't exact didn't directly cost him but you think the the thought coming out is did Kevin Owens have it and blow it and like sort of like like he mostly did but you know I come out of it just feeling like all right we kind of got the expected result and Kevin Owens didn't seem to have too much regret and so I'm kind of like all right like maybe we'll see something on Friday but between just kind of a lackluster build no advancement in the story in the match I'm just kind of like all right it was fine and and now not only that they Michael Cole said afterward that solo seoa got next so is Kevin Owens just kind of done now or like you said does he get with Randy Orton or does something else happen I I don't know but this entire this entire bit has been extremely underwhelming to me I mean I completely disagree from the standpoint of you calling it underwhelming I think we had this similar discussion argument with you want to call it on Tuesday show I enjoy the fact that this is a different style storyline than what you normally get in professional wrestling and again this is another conversation that we've had over the last I'd say year year and a half even perhaps longer I have trust in this creative process from WWE which we did not have previously where it'll all make sense in the end I think you clearly have or uh Owens I almost called them Orton but it really goes for both both of them Owens and Orton now both hungry for gold Orton talked about how important it would be for him to win the World Heavyweight Championship at this juncture of his career Owens was talking about hey you know I didn't deserve this particular title opportunity but I still very much want to be champion and they played up that entire angle of him not winning a singles title in seven years which by the way is startling when you think about it and I'll tell you what this did accomplish for me Chris it got me back in the zone of badly wanting KO to get a real legitimate World Championship run in WWE when he earns and deserves as a baby face the guy remains massively over he needs to get that moment sooner than later in the same vein as Finn Balor though obviously Owens he's been involved in more substantial moments than Balor but I'm just saying from an Apples to Apples comparison those are two guys who at any juncture if WWE wanted to strap them up fans would absolutely go wild for it just as was the case with AJ Styles late in this match on Saturday I was truly hoping WWE just pulled the trigger and did something interesting that tease coming out of the crossroads counter was super strong and I think this I don't know if you have anything to say on what I was just talking about there but this also takes me into like another topic of the predictable book of the championship so do you have anything you want to say about this and then I can kind of circle back to that if so well I would just say yes there are a lot of people on the roster right now were like man they should get one more World title run or that person should get a world title run but you've got two world champions now who I don't think are going to drop the title probably until at least WrestleMania and guther and Cody so what does that mean for AJ Styles for Randy Orton for Kevin Owens for J Uso for La Knight potentially at one point there's just there's a lot of them and there's just no not enough World Heavyweight Championships to go around essentially which was why you know Nakamura was one Finn balor's another like there's a lot of guys here who are probably not going to get a world title run or get another world title run just because of the long title run era that we're now in under Triple H and as the saying goes not everyone can be world champion not everyone should be and not everyone can be at the same time you know you need to remember unlike other companies potentially WWE the talent that is in the main event and in the upper mid card it's already established it's not people that are being built these guys at any turn could go become a champion and you wouldn't think twice about it and when you look at the decision- making that's been made from a creative standpoint in the main event picture I was going to say division uh for WWE this is why I'm going to go back a little bit to backlash and I forget the other show where Cody defended against AJ but this is why I was so adamant that it would make sense to switch the title one time and then two three months later you put it back on Cody he can take the run all the way to WrestleMania and that's because number one there's so many deserving people and number two Triple H you know for as improved as his booking and creative has been and there's no question that it's better he has a crutch and that crutch and you saw it play out on this show and you've seen it play out pretty much every show that is not WrestleMania or SummerSlam this year is that he refuses to change major titles outside of the big four for the most part so when you have someone wi it at a WrestleMania or at a SummerSlam you pretty much know that they're not dropping that strap until there's another big Stadium show which means every subsequent premium live event and that is what they call them and all these fans buying multiple hundred doll tickets you know in Germany and in France and in the United States certainly as well in Canada too you know you're going to get a really interesting show that's probably going to have some good wrestling and a lot of people you like but dude I mean there was one match I think on this card we disagreed on the other four we nailed our predictions and it's because it was completely predictable now as Paul LEC has said and sound drop we used to play on the podcast I don't have it anymore I'm going to try to get it back sometimes predictable things are good but sometimes predictable things are boring and I think as much as we might enjoy these WWE premium Live Events and think that on a week- toe basis the TV is so much better and so much more watchable and so much more exciting and the story lines are gripping the audience and all this great stuff when you get to the premium Live Events you want to be surprised occasionally and unfortunately when it comes to the world title picture the WWE title on the World Heavyweight Championship nothing surprising happens it's not even just surprising but just meaningful things happen we're not having meaningful things happen where it's like oh man what was the what was the biggest moment from that show oh that's the show where this happened or that's the show where that happened we haven't really we haven't had that outside of the Royal Rumble WrestleMania and SummerSlam and so it just it gets kind of boring and the flip side of that is you say well business is booming and we'll talk about that at the end of the show but what's the incentive to change it's all working for them yeah um and so that's where you just kind of get in the spot where a lot of people just want to be at the WWE show they're going to so many new places the show itself is the story right rather than what's on the show and so you just get predictable matches and you're not having meaningful things happen and you don't go to a concert thinking that you know a band is going to debut a new song like that's not you know the way it works you want the hits largely right but at the same time you don't know the set list when you go to a concert and it would be cool if you know I'm at an Eminem concert and Dr Dre comes out and I didn't expect that by the way M needs to tour new album is great that's another topic for another day the point I'm trying to make here is just because it's predictable doesn't make it bad or boring however predictable can be boring and this is a repeated you know take that we've had kind of coming out of these Bev shows I mean they certainly don't feel b-level when it comes to the audience but when you can do eight or more matches for a SummerSlam and you're putting on two nights with 16 matches for Wrestlemania and then every other show you're getting five matches about three hours no major title changes unless it's the women's tag team titles you just kind of know what to expect and it doesn't hurt the entertainment value of the show but it does affect the urgency to watch it live and say oh my God I can't believe blank happened we're not getting enough of those moments these days we get them in storylines on TV which is immensely positive and we occasionally get them in storylines on premium Live Events we saw it with Roman Reigns returning obviously the entire bloodline story of the last couple of years some big moments on premium Live Events and certainly at SummerSlam too we got big moments with judgment day so credit words du there but again when it comes to the two main titles the standard Bearer as Cody rhods likes to call himself for the entire company and this world heavyweight championship that they're trying to build into something super unique if every single Reign is long then nothing really separates any of them does that make sense it's exactly what it is you just have fewer moments you know we remember so many title changes from the attit I think there were like something like 15 to 20 World title changes in in um like 99 I think and yeah that can be too many but you remember Triple H winning his first title you remember mankind winning the title you know like I would just I'd love to be I'd love for for a company that's all about creating moments I'd love to just have more moments we have not had many moments this year absolutely agree all right let's move to what I would consider not a third main event but the third major match on this card CM Punk against Drew McIntyre in a strap match this was what I'd call the midow Main Event McIntyre had this menacing methodical entrance with a black leather sleeveless coat and dark green scale wrist guards almost like dragon skin he looked awesome there were colored lights in the corners now Michael Cole I just want to be clear about this he announced it as green for Drew who was wearing green and red for Punk who was wearing mostly white but with blue and red except for some reason despite Drew wearing green and punk wearing red whoever controlled the lights did the opposite the red lights were for McIntyre and the green lights were for Punk and I sat there thinking this whole time I don't even know why they're using green and red which means go and stop if you're going to do colors representing different people then you have to use one color that is not one of those meaning like green green and yellow or blue and red you know or something like that it was very odd for me that and the person operating them messed up at the very beginning the whole light situation was a little bit weird I actually enjoyed the lights Chris because the stipulation of the match is you need to touch all four corners and if you're looking at it visually on TV you look around you get a drink whatever the case you look up you want to know like where things stand I perhaps would have preferred an onscreen you know digital kind of marker as opposed to it physically being in the corners but you got people there in the crowd as well anyway a reminder for everyone listening the rules called for touching all four corners isn't it nor like I don't know why they had different lights isn't it normally if one person goes you know one two three and then someone else hits one that resets it I believe that was the case or that can be the case but because of the spot they did which we'll talk about in a moment it made sense for them to have two sets of colored lights I didn't mind we'll get into we'll talk about simulation at the end I didn't mind it it was just the execution of it was kind of weird well just initially at the start of the match it was odd and then like it was fine for the rest of it I'm just talking about before the Bell even rang uh this had a killer game movie sponsorship like I said it was on a black barricade and the logo was just in white which was super easy on the eyes if you want to throw those type of ads on matches like do it that's not going to bother me at all McIntyre attacked before the Bell he dominated early only for Punk to surprise him with a GTS after he touched the first Corner whoever like I said was operating the lights screwed up initially Punk laid the strap and hard ringside on the announce table started bleeding after a Glasgow kiss I missed whether he bladed it seemed minor Punk focused on setting up a table ringside that allowed McIntyre to capitalize with the Claymore back in the ring the punk drove him head first into a chair in the turnbuckles McIntyre answered by lifting and dropping punk out of the ring into that ringside table which was a super unique spot McIntyre then carried Punk to three corners and as he was hitting each one Punk would hit the turnbuckle behind him without his knowledge which is why they had two lights in each Corner what we were just talking about McIntyre Tapped Out in a sharpshooter which was irrelevant so Punk kept it locked in he pulled punk in for a neck breaker and put on the bracelet before hitting a second Claymore for Three Corner Taps Punk pulled him in from the fourth for a GTS then he noticed the bracelet so he had a third in total GTS he tapped two corners he chose to GTS McIntyre a fourth time then he hit a third corner he was easily able to hit the four fourth turn buckle instead he had a fifth GTS regained the bracelet off Drew's wrist and hit the corner to win the match in 19 minutes and my immediate takeaway as soon as this was over Chris this was so much better than SummerSlam night and day honestly yes almost cathartic in a way like I knew these guys could put on a great match excellent work across the board from these two the strap stipulation I thought was handled perfectly from the standpoint that they weren't hitting the turnbuckles all match they were going for them when appropriate in the story plus there was a heavy focus on inflicting damage to one another not just winning the match that's what was missing from SummerSlam it doesn't hurt that this went exactly as I predicted with the bracelet part of the feud finally coming to end of course Punk was physically protected well throughout by Drew McIntyre had his share of strong moments with those Claymores in the table spot I could have done without the last GTS when McIntyre was already dead but that's a minor gripe if he was going to go after the bracelet I could understand wanting to make sure he's done done before going and doing that and delaying finishing the match I just think they wanted us to believe that a counter was possible more importantly I could have done without the Tapout in the Sharpshooter I'd have preferred one of two things either a that happened in the Anaconda Vice which is a much better submission for Punk and it's his submission or even better than that I'd have preferred them flipping it and having McIntyre Tap Out Punk because of the Sharpshooter submission the match felt to me a little bit from a kayfabe standpoint a little bit too one-sided and dominant towards Punk when McIntyre barely scrapped by at SummerSlam they really should be entering a potential rubber match 50/50 instead it feels like Punk has the upper hand with a more complete and decisive Victory Apples to Apples at the same time if wins the rubber match doesn't matter some more violence couple of those tweaks would have sent this match way higher but it ruled it was a perfect midow Main Event an excellent dramatic finish was a lot of fun to watch this was Punk at his best 4.25 stars in an a yeah this was great like you said you it was so much better than Summers slim you knew these guys could do something and there was a lot of talk about the stipulation around the match and my brother was like it's like a blood feed with a Mario Party miname involved and but the way it played out I think the stipulation ended up being perfect because the stipulation in the winner almost didn't matter and because you didn't have to go for a pin or a Tap Out you could just start beating the keep beating the crap out of the other guy and keep going over and over and over because whether or not you tap four corners or not it doesn't it doesn't prove your dominance over somebody so essentially the stipulation was like secondary to these guys just beating the ever loving crap out of each other and so I thought that played out really well the violence was good Punk bleeding was good even if it was on accident um the right person won we got the bracelet spot like we all predicted so hopefully that is now done and this was great this was really good um terrific job everybody stipulation end up being solid I thought it all ended up it it made up for summrtime in a big way it did this was Punk's first singles Victory on WWE television since he beat Billy Gun in 2014 and his first win of any kind at a plle since he beat the shield in 2013 he has also officially regained Chris the lineal aew championship and lineal real aew Championship so congratulations to punk and obviously he got the bracelet as well so now we can finally move that part of the story line into the past I forgot to mention that I liked how that was accomplished within the match story it was very much what we talked about on the ultimate preview you know it's a strap that goes around your wrist which is similar to a bracelet and all he had to do is knock him out take it that's over we never have to talk about that part of it again and now we can get to the actual blood feud between those guys potentially happening at aptly named Bad Blood in potentially a hell and a Cell match I think that's what we all want at the end of the day from this Feud if that happens Chris and they culminate it there even with a couple speed bumps I'd call this a massively successful head-to-head rivalry yeah we all well also I mean Punk said I believe that him and Drew are done like he thinks this is over now he said that but that's what McIntyre said after SummerSlam too right so I'm I'm I'm very interested to watch Raw and how they get back into it which is exactly what I don't think it's over either that's exactly what we want from a premium live event what is going to happen next we are left asking that question coming out of McIntyre and punk let's move to the terror twins against Liv Morgan and Dominic Mysterio this was sponsored I'm sure you were excited by some Star Wars and it had a similar all black barricade that was again not overly noticeable Liv kept distracting Damien which allowed Dom to get some unearned shots including a shoulder tackle into the steel steps and tornado DDT Ripley dominated Morgan on the hot tag and got her hands on Mysterio with two clothes lines a front slam and a choke hold using her legs on the ropes that was a throwback reference to how they started together when like Ria submitted him basically and got him in her grasp I thought that was really cool the crowd went apoplectic at that spot I think they got the reference as well Liv prevented Riptide and took a huge sidekick to the face but hit a backstabber and some awesome spinning crucifix driver I think Tatum paxley does something similar but it was super cool and it should be a signature move of hers going forward the terror twins did stereo Bell claps and Razor's edges when JD McDonna and Caro interfered as expected Liv hit a sunset flip Power Bomb off the steel steps with Ria's shoulders hitting the barricade hard Finn Balor caught priest with a sling blade behind the referee's back Dom added a 619 and a Frog Splash for a false finish Liv nearly flew past Ria on a Tope suici but Ripley caught Oblivion for a back breaker only for mcdonut to distract during Rip Tide Morgan took advantage with a springboard one leg Cod breaker priest merked the men ringside he Clos lined the life out of Dom on the announced table Ripley then drilled Morgan with a headbutt and hit Riptide for the win in 14 minutes with a cover that can only be described as a full-on pile driver we tweeted the picture don't worry and then after the Bell Ria licked lives face it should have been me it should have been me get thirsty during uh Ripley matches I'll just say uh starting with my lone criticism wrong winners Judgment Day had the numbers the element of surprise they got beat two on Five I get it the terot twins are monsters comparatively they're also massively over and Ripley is maybe the number two baby face in the entire company it's just if she's ultimately going to beat Liv and you presume damen's going to beat Finn a loss here would have been completely fine the feud needs places to go if the twins always win Judgment Day always looks like this also told us that Liv probably needs a heavy to help combat Ria because she just can't do this herself I'm talking about in kayab obviously regarding the match it banged the emotion and intensity constantly built through the sequences it hit a crescendo at the right time Liv completely showed out we have long talked about her Improvement this was one of the best matches of her entire career and even though it wasn't one-on-one you can make an argument it maybe was the best match of her entire career from an in ring standpoint the reactions to Ripley were insane She's rivaling the Man Becky Lynch for most overw woman in WWE sble in the Attitude Era it's amazing to witness her star somehow continued to grow week after week show after show priest is over like Rover as a baby face never would have expected that and they even spend time on the countdown show explaining their change in perspective and pretty much why they're good guys now I did forget to mention that earlier I'm in 3.75 Stars B+ for the match would have been higher if not for all the interfer and stuff it was a perfect placement in the co-main event and even though I disagreed about who won I still think it was excellent yeah I was honestly stunned by this I you know when we did the preview you had gone back and forth and kind of talked to yourself in circles about who to pick and I said a cirle this is easy not multiple circles this this was easy that that uh and live are going to win because they have to win because they need you got to give the you got to keep the heels going and if you know Ria and presearch are so physically dominant like you got to cut him down to size a little bit I thought that was easy and I was wrong and it just felt like give the people the thing they want to cheer for type of match and that's okay yeah yeah and and not to say that's not to say oh the storyline is dead or oh it lost heat it doesn't just listen to the reaction Ria is getting it's fine just from a story standpoint I'm like you know what kind of adversity are they facing here at this point just to get to get their titles back I guess they're so dominant it feels like it shouldn't be too hard um so in terms of like where this goes from here what do you do to keep it fresh you just say hey live I beat you I pinned you I get a one-on-one match for your title or or we do that again or or what I mean if Finn got involved maybe we get to Finn priest like we like thought don't have a ton to say other than really good match really fun um Crow was hot just really really surprised at the winner um you you'd figure you want to give the Judgment Day some wins where they can get him and this would this would have been an easy place to give them a win completely agree I mean they theoretically could Circle back and maybe not rematch this but do a similar style match with someone else in instead of Dom on raw and then let Judgment Day win like Balor and live in a similar match on Raw let them win and then you need to still do those one-on ones we've mentioned it on the podcast you know bad blood is coming up in I think five weeks I want to say in Atlanta and to me that just I I've said it multiple times it seems like they're really building this into a special show just based on the way feuds seem to be culminating right because the next step which is what we always talk about at the end of our match breakdowns here is to go live in Ria there's almost nowhere else to go at least for the women for the men you could maybe figure out some other options I guess but I feel like you got to go liia and you can't wait until blood money in the sand for that you can't wait you know eight weeks to get there I mean I guess they theoretically could they can do an injury angle knock someone out I don't think they want to do that so then you're running Liv and Ria at bad blood and you got to expect the title change there unless it's just continuing the story of Liv dodging Ria cheating escaping and then they just literally build this to blood Money In The Sand or even Survivor series at the end of the year but this goes back kind of to what we were just talking about a little while ago on the show which is at some point things need to happen and you got to end stuff and then start new feuds and storylines and I love the way WWE is long-term booking over the last couple of years not every storyline needs to be long term yeah I think that's the key that they need to remember even your top story lens for your top titles you can do one that's a couple months do a title change move someone else in a different direction have them come back if you want them to have that title at WrestleMania have them come back four months later and win it just because someone holds a title doesn't mean or wins a title doesn't mean they need to hold it until you want them to ultimately drop it to that main person there are so many different ways that you can book that type of stuff so again that to me is the one crutch the Triple H has that I truly hope he would get rid of and and kind of figure out with his booking style let's move to the last match uh the women's Tag Team Championship Unholy Union defending against Bianca Bair and Jade Carill there was a really unique video package with the faces gassing each other up talking about being ready to Define their legacy and the match being more than physical but mental this is the exact type of package Chris that WWE has used in the past when they're ready to introduce a team name and a slogan except they didn't at the end they actually said they were inevitable at the end of the video and as I was putting down my notes I was like you know what it's a pretty good name Bianca belir Jade Cargill inevitable like that works because they're they're beastly they're dominant they can kick the out of you they look great it's a good name it's too good of a name I know because I don't I don't think they're gonna be like it's a good name for a a faction honestly it's a better name for a faction team I agree yeah but but also inevitable it feels like Jade you know we're waiting for I know they just got you know this whole thing but it feels like Jade and Bianca at some point not too distant will go singles rout and so maybe you want to save it I don't know but that is a really good name it's a great name and you would think they would go singles at the same time they're both Uber baby faces and I don't know that you could easily turn one of them heel but you know that's a conversation for another time anyway this match Unholy Union Bianca Jade this was second on the card maybe Jade's best looking entrance since the set changes the Champions played Cat and Mouse out in the faces early constantly preventing belir from reaching her Corner Caro got the PowerHouse hot tag beasted the faces with a jackhammer on isod Dawn Alba stopped the tandem cartwheel move they got a bit out of sorts with Unholy Union hitting their gory bomb flatliner on Bianca for a broken fall she and Jade combined to hit it later but Dawn hit the backstabber before Cargill was a bit late preventing a Swanton bomb finisher belir threw fire out of the ring into cargill's arms for a slam into the barricade and the faces had a spinebuster before their tilter world DDT German suplex combination that still doesn't have a name nothing they had do has a name uh to win the titles in 12 minutes I love that move for me it feels like a top tier signature ahead of a finisher as opposed to an actual finisher but at least it's inventive and unique and it's not like a boring high low that so many teams do the expected outcome here given the star power the stature of Bianca and Jade I'm glad this was given appropriate time I'm also so glad that Unholy Union looked completely game they looked capable of retaining the titles despite being defeated the expectation was that their Title reign would be short and lackluster I would call it decent and acceptable in the end they needed more screen time that they didn't get more promo opportunities but they did get a couple defenses they were featured way more regularly than they ever had been before and they did get a Title reign and they won them in Scotland all of that was positive anyway the match was put together well there were a couple execution miscues that prevented me from thinking too highly of it it was definitely the weakest on the card three stars B minus yeah solid enough match the winners we expected and needed and now we can kind of pretend the last couple of months didn't happen and we can get back to treating the women's Tag Division like it matters I mean we treat it like it matters the problem is that WWE didn't treat it like it matters it went what like a month before uh Unholy Union like after won the tit before they did anything yeah yeah after they won the titles was like they were completely forgotten and then the last couple of weeks the last month they picked it up a bit and did some things they got some wins but like I would have loved some you know some stories some vignettes some somethings to kind of add to their characters I'm glad we got to see them wrestle more but that's not the only thing we needed to see them do more of we want to kind of get to know their personalities and stuff like that when we we just never really got that so um but I really like them and i' love to to see more of them but Jaden Bianca needed to win they're fantastic people go crazy for them um they need a team name they need to enter together but uh this was the right call they need a team name they need a tandem entrance they need a finisher name I mean these These are basic building blocks of a tag team and with the women's division I've said this many times jayen Bianca they don't do it Unholy Union they don't call them that even though they refer to them as that Katana chance and Kaden Carter which is a very long it used to be even more difficult Casey catazaro that name to say there's so many different things they could call them house party I mean you could pick any name they don't give them a name none of the women's tag teams get names and few of them get finisher names as well which is frustrating and I would say it's an issue with the women except it happens with the men as well so it's just like yes it's aens well I mean one of them got a name the the the collective thing pure Fusion colle on it it's a Terri you hated on it so yeah I know but that's a shitty name but they come up with a good one better than not having a name they just named a team in NXT fatal influence fine name like I'm not saying it's great but it's perfectly good anyway Chris let's move out of our full breakdown of WWE bash in Berlin we've gone over all five matches on the card and let's move into our grades segment a reminder before we get to the postow grades that would be the pre-show expectation grades so on our ultimate preview you and I both agreed that this show would be an A minus your number grade was 90 mine was 92 and we pulled our listeners are getting overheads on Twitter at getting overcast their votes before the show 31% a 65% B 4% C averaged out to an 88.6 rounds up to an 89 out of 100 so a B+ but right along the same lines as us all within what is that four points of one another so we're pretty much right there together so Chris with WWE bash in Berlin in the books as always you get to go first what is your final grade for this premium live event be plus and honestly I was really close to going to be not because the wrestling wasn't good it was just none nothing just felt all that meaningful like I said it was predictable we had one title change but it was a change that needed to happen and like Orton gother was good but like what am i g to look back on this show and be like man this is a show where that happened or you gotta watch that match or I can't believe that moment happened we just we got none of that here and so I guess I'll go like a 88 I don't know where B+ starts I know B+ starts at 87 or 88 starts at 87 go8 yeah so it was fine interesting so a middleof the road B+ for you with an 88 so before I give my grade let's shift over to the listeners are getting overheads their votes on our Twitter poll after the show again at getting overcast so you can follow and so you can vote in the future 38% said this was between an A+ and an a 51% said it was between an A minus and a B+ 9% said it was between a b and a B minus and 2% said it was a C+ or lower that averages out to a 91.9 92 out of 100 so an A minus so their grade was where I started and your grade is where the listeners started it's pretty interesting the way that works out and I actually want to just kind of turn it around and make it a trifecta because my grade is where you started a 90 out of 100 I thought it was an a minus right on the border between a minus and B+ and it's pretty much for the reasons you stated though I I do think that you're being a little bit harsh on the standpoint of because we didn't get surprises or major you know developments all of a sudden that doesn't make it a good show this is very similar to me to backlash in France a little bit different but I watched this show on a Saturday afternoon and was immensely entertained throughout out I don't average my grades on matches to determine my show grade but I had three that were in the a range one that was B+ borderline better if it had just finished differently and yeah the women's tag team match wasn't great do I wish the card was larger yes do I wish there was a surprise title change sure but just because I don't get the exact booking that I want including by the way Judgment day going over the terror twins you know doesn't necessarily affect my overall enjoyment of the show nor the quality that I believe was delivered and that I think is ultimately what it comes down to I believe this was a high quality show in pretty much every aspect I mean starting starting with the things WWE can't control okay the crowd was exceptional second only to Leon some might even prefer it because they were super loud but they weren't as distracting the visual presentation I thought was fantastic commentary was on total Point Wade Barrett you could make an argument was the star of this entire show if you were really paying attention to like what commentary was saying throughout which I was cuz I was looking down a lot cuz college football was happening I was doing a number of different things Wade Barrett put on a commentary performance you could possibly say it was the best of the entire year from a color commentator in WWE that's how great he was and then again you go match by match and the men's matches were awesome all three of them different levels the Judgment Day match was a super amount of fun the crowd loved the Ripley and Dom stuff which by the way Chris I'll insert this one more time into the show another example of fans telling WWE these two need to fight one another and we will pay for it and we will scream for it and sure maybe someone somewhere will have a problem the vast majority of people will not and then again the only downo for me was the women's tag team match but it was still the right decision to kind of move that division going forward so this was for me the definition of an A minus show super good but just nothing really taking it over the top and making it excellent from start to finish I I think the other thing like comparing it to backlash or classic at the castle or PTO Rico or whatever the novelty of these is wearing off on me kind of blending together having a rambunctious European crowd it's great it's not a new thing anymore you know like we're kind of used to that so like and again it's five matches it felt like half of a show if you had thrown on from Smackdown the LA Knight ludvick Kaiser us title match and the Nia Jax mein street fight you're looking at a fantastic card in show here you know but they're splitting things up with these European shows and putting stuff on Smackdown and so the pay-per-view just leaves me like eh it didn't feel special it didn't feel like that big of a deal I think that's where I kind of stand where we've gotten so many of these Australia Scotland Wales uh Puerto Rico and so like it's it's not as unique anymore and and and because of that I want bigger things to happen than have been happening and I I I think that's kind of my general overall feeling on the whole thing I completely agree with that mindset in fact I believe I said something earlier in the show we're at the point where okay each of these International shows is great but if nothing is ever going to happen on them then the excitement to watch each of them individually lessons and at some point I'm not saying it's going to happen yet because there's still a lot of places they can go WWE can go where they haven't been recently but at some point you're going to have fans saying well you know they're in my area and I'd really love to go but is anything going to happen like is there actually going to be a title change and right now what they are doing is they're conditioning us as fans to think if there's a major title match at any show that's not a stadium show in the United States or there's a there's not a unique circumstance like Becky Lynch taking time off and Liv Morgan needing to win the title and even that technically was kind of a stadium show blood Money In The Sand unless we encounter a show like that nothing significant is going to happen just like when you watch television unless it's a tag team title match chances are the title is not changing hands on a raw or Smackdown these days that shouldn't be the case the title should be maybe not every single time it's contested um some you know a situation where you believe it can change hands but a good amount of times and even when we work ourselves up and we try to help WWE along I'm not saying that we're actively trying to do that I'm just explaining as we talk through the process on the show of hey you know if AJ Styles won the title here it would make a lot of sense because they could do this this and this or if Kevin Owens won man that would be so cool because they could do this every single time at the end even though we predict Cody will retain and we predicted Gunther will retain and we knew what was going to happen by the time you get out of the match you're like man that was a damn good match but it would have been cooler if they changed the title right and if you never do it then you're always going to have people hoping that you will but at some point you need to deliver that and I feel like it's been a couple years now and granted you know I know I'm talking a little bit of a run on here granted Roman Reigns had a record Title reign they couldn't just change it gother had record record Tyler they couldn't just change it but Logan Paul had a long ass InterContinental Tyler ring that did nothing it really accomplished nothing gother now may hold the title like you said until WrestleMania I hope he doesn't he could Cody rhods it now seems like despite there being a couple opportunities for him to drop the strap there seems to be no reason for him to drop the title until WrestleMania so when you go into all of these other shows through the end of the year bad blood blood Money In The Sand Survivor series War games all of that com coming up before Royal Rumble is anything going to happen in any of the shows which makes us think oh it's really cool they actually pulled the trigger there if I had to bet on it right now I would say no you know what something big did happen on the show I can't believe I forgot to mention it ties along to this WWE got its highest gate ever from an arena show unbelievable I'm so happy for them you know we talk about on this podcast how much we love the gate baby that's our favorite thing can't believe I I think what happened in that one segment I couldn't I don't speak German but based on what commentary said they brought that guy out to tell the crowd I think he told the crowd that it was the highest gate in WWE history for an arena show right it is well I don't know I don't know what he said but before the show um WWE I think it was Triple H announced that it was already the largest gate for an arena show in company history any country right yeah but he didn't go out there and announce the crowd size and then people cheer and they give the crowd size that that's norm and so because I assume that's not what he said I for the life of me can't understand why they're promoting the gate to the crowd it's the weirdest thing look how much money we made off of you look how over look how high price these tickets were for you guys isn't that fantastic shouldn't you be really like you go out there tell the crowd what the the the capacity is and what the numbers are and people cheer that that's great save the gate for the press release it's so weird yeah to like promote your gate to the people you're taking all their money from I just they've done this a few times now so usually Triple H should do it like in the press conference or something to I think announce it to the crowd was well I don't weird I don't know what they said I was back and forth from football I don't want to I don't want to state for sure that they told the crowd that maybe they did but if they did and they didn't announce the number and the crowd just cheered then yeah that I would agree with you that's weird but I don't know that that's what happened yeah I don't know for sure you're kind of going you're kind of going on a tangent on something that we don't know you're kind of going on a tangent on something we don't know for sure whether he said it or not either way it's a bizarre thing I get you want to promoted your public traded company yada y but like yeah I just well I I agree with you I don't mind them saying in the press conference after that's they're in front of media that's fine and during a 2hour kickoff show I think what Triple H said was we're sold out at over 13,000 twice as many people as saw me wrestle Bret Hart here it's the largest gate for an arena show in WWE history he said it as like a as a one-off you have a two hour show if you mention that along with the number of tickets sold like fine I'm not going to really care that much if they do go out of their way to like make that a big deal like on Raw Monday if they put up one of those Graphics that like this was the largest gate for an arena show in WWE who gives a shouldn't care about that they do because these days everyone's so tribal about everything but they really shouldn't like like if we're being honest am I misremembering did Triple H go out in front of the crowd either in Scotland and announce that it was the biggest gate or or am I misremembering that I don't remember that I don't believe I thought they I thought they may have done that before earlier I don't know but either way it's it just annoys it no the heck out of me it go but it ties into this whole thing the reason WWE doesn't need to do all these title changes doesn't need to do all these other things is because business is so good because they are breaking all these Financial records like they're not incentivized to do that that's the business I get it it's totally fair I'm not going to say they need to do something it's clearly they know what they're doing I just um it just for those of us who are watching it no matter what every time sometimes you'd like a little bit more and sometimes you wouldn't want them to brag about how much money they're taking from us well our conversation is not really about what we want them to do from a business day point it's what we want creatively I mean we're not here to criticize I mean we certainly do when appropriate criticize business practices or you know announcements they make or you know whatever the case might be how PR handles something uh but when it comes to this and our you know we have complaints or or suggestions or whatever the case we're largely saying hey this is how you can make the product better to appeal to you and I and hopefully many of the people listening agree with us and I hope they do because thousands of people listen so so that would be fantastic I will say I hope that at the end of the show people aren't listening to this and thinking man these guys are bitching a lot about a show they enjoyed because it kind of feels like we are nitpicking more than usual and I'm not sure that's completely fair I mean it is fair for us to give our legitimate opinions and coming out of the show you and I felt the way we feel and and we're telling everyone that at the same time when I was giving you my grade and and when I was talking about at the onset of the show I really enjoyed bash in Berlin I sat down for three three and a half hours on a Saturday I wish it didn't happen during football obviously but I sat down for three and three and a half hours I watched these matches they were awesome most of them exceeded expectations and at the end of the day I said wow WWE did some good business here not from a numerical standpoint but from an in ring standpoint so I was pleased with bash and Berlin I think for me Chris and maybe we can wrap on wrap up on this it continues a string of WWE meeting or exceeding expectations when it comes to premium Live Events even win cards are perhaps not as strong as we believe that they should be or not as large as we believe that they should be and coming out of this just like I said earlier just like I said on the ultimate preview and I've said multiple times on this podcast I have really high expectations for bad blood in Atlanta I think WWE is goingon to blow that out now maybe I'm wrong and maybe it's another five match card and sure there's a Hell in a Cell but nothing else happens it just doesn't feel like the show is being built that that way not only that but we've got time between these pay-per-views now finally five weeks yes we can breathe a little bit they can they can
