ATLANTA NEWS & WEATHER: High school quarterback injured in game, storms possible Sunday

e hi there and good morning on this Sunday I'm Megan Packer here with Atlanta news first plus thanks so much for checking in with us as we get you caught up on what's making news on this Sunday and also a check of your weather forecast it is the long Labor Day weekend hope you've been able to get out and enjoy it a little bit the weather's been cooperating for for the most part but First Alert meteorologist Courtney jackaboi uh is issuing a First Alert weather day for today as she tracks the possibility of storms for later today so you'll want to hear her forecast in just a few moments if you're planning to get out maybe grow uh barbecue with family and friends today or maybe hit the water and uh just get out there and enjoy this holiday weekend so here is what is making news this morning and uh we will show you right now what it looks like on Lake laner which unfortunately has turned into um the site of a drowning this weekend we just heard this morning from the Department of Natural Resources and they tell us that a 46-year-old man named hanani Weidman from Vinings drowned on the water yesterday they say he was swimming from Shore at bethl Park back to his boat when he went under the water and did not come up for scye and Hall County firefighters worked together to find him under 25 ft of water so unfortunately this long holiday weekend uh taking a deadly turn there on lake laner with again a 46-year-old from Vinings pulled from the water yesterday A lot of people right now are pulling for a young man from West Georgia a football player who was injured on the field during a Friday night game uh breaman High School quarterback Carson Kimble was tackled during Friday night's game and was severely injured he had surgery for a spinal injury and at he's at graded Memorial hospital right now uh that surgery was yesterday we're told that he woke up with family at his side last night there are now fundraisers that have been started for him so many people in that Community are pulling for him we are hoping to get an update later today either from loved ones or people within the school Community to let us know how he is doing but just a devastating start to the season of course um just this this injury devastating this beloved player we heard from the principal of the school just spoke so highly of him so many people are thinking of him and his family and his entire team right now as he recovers at Grady Hospital a woman from Pickins County who was badly burned when her house exploded has died uh Shelly Harland had been in Grady hospital since her home exploded from a suspected gas League about two weeks ago she worked at Annie's restaurant in Jasper and uh the restaurant has been posting updates and keeping the community updated on her status and sadly they posted that she died Friday morning surrounded by family they have been collecting donations to support her they are still collecting the donations they say to help pay for Shelley harland's funeral uh so many people were pulling for her as well hoping for the best as she was at Grady for those severe burns and you can just see the extent of this damage here with that house that just exploded and again firefighters do believe at last check that that was a gas leak that caused that explosion two weekends ago well Dragon Con continues on in Downtown Atlanta always a huge part of that weekend is the Dragon Con parade look at some of these costumes we spotted yesterday this was at 10:00 yesterday morning in downtown Atlanta moving through the streets of the city always a fantastic time very impressive costumes out here you see characters from anything and everything you can think of that is the fun part about this the floats and the costumes were out there people lined the streets people of all ages uh today is day four of this wildly popular pop culture convention before it wraps up tomorrow so that is just one of the many events happening in the city this weekend that's been going on Atlanta black pride events have been going on of course yesterday was a massive um sports day you had multiple college football games you had Georgia who beat Clemson and then you had Georgia Tech beating uh GSU last night and let's see we've got golf pro golf is in Atlanta this weekend so there is just so much happening yeah the Tour Championship so we do need to find out if the players will be able to get that play in for this final round of the golf tournament the storms have been coming and going as you know the past few days it really kind of depends on where you are at what time of day yesterday was a first alert weather day today is a First Alert weather day and our team of meteorologists has just been tracking um you know when these storms could pop up because it is summertime and we are getting in that pattern when you just have to be aware of them possibly popping up at any time so for uh more on this let's bring in First Alert meteorologist Courtney Jack abazi I'm Megan Packer thank you for checking in with us Courtney we're just talking about um just it really depends on the time timing and where you are and it's looking a little cloudy over the water right now but no storms out there right now at this point right right correct so we'll watch for showers and storms to develop as we go through the afternoon and evening today uh those clouds a sign of something that we call a trough that's currently sitting over North Georgia it's kind of trapping in some of the moisture that's in place in the form of humidity and also from uh the afternoon and evening thunderstorms that we had yesterday so um as we go through the day today that extra moisture and and essentially that trough that is trapping all that in will help add a little extra lift a little extra energy and ultimately promote that chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms yesterday a lot of our rain and storms stayed closer to our cold front to our North uh couple of reasons that could have been um we do have a low that is trying to develop off the coast of Florida and you can kind of see some of those showers near Savannah that's off of that low sometimes that can kind of suck in some drier air so maybe we had some drier air to our South that cut off some of our moisture flow to promote showers and storms yesterday also the storms from Friday night they did linger a little late so that could have kind of cut off some of our energy um but nonetheless uh hopefully you got to get out and enjoy the day I know if you lived up in the mountains uh up towards you know like Lake Burton Clay County LJ it was a pretty stormy day for you but a lot of Metro got out okay through the afternoon now today uh I do think that could be different because of this so there's a cold front tour North and you can see that generating showers even some heavy rain in parts of Western Tennessee and then we have that trough that's that dashed line there it's an elongated trough that's sitting over the area and again that's going to kind of serve as a piece of energy for showers and storms to develop along a little later today here's kind of a look at the area and sections of where I think and when I think showers and storms will be the most likely so a few scattered afternoon storms will be possible across Metro today one of our models that I'm going to take you through is a little more aggressive on that rain coverage some models just keep mainly areas along and south of I 20 kind of in the bullseye for showers and storms later tonight um regardless as that front is moving through later this evening it does look like storms will be more so likely in the mountains and then along and south of by 20 that is definitely um something that models are agreeing on again as that front moves through that'll really help kick up showers and storms especially north of Atlanta and then it looks like that little piece of energy could uh start to float South and promote evening storms uh later in the day like after 6:00 mainly along and south of I 20 but uh we can't rule out the chance for a few scattered storms to develop in Metro and the Storm Prediction Center is kind of on board with that as well they did kind of nudge the severe Outlook to Encompass most of Metro and Points North earlier that was kind of just for the mountains but now uh we're looking at a level one5 threat so very isolated threat for severe storms uh Gusty wind is what we be looking for in any storms that do develop that could become severe and of course Heavy Rain some loud claps of Thunder will be possible uh through the day today and that'll be for the afternoon and evening hours so what I'm going to do is take you through one of our models uh this this model didn't perform very well yesterday however um I do think with that trough over us again I think that we just have that extra ingredient today for this model to play out um so we're kind of preparing you for the possibility for a fairly wet afternoon um but again some models are thinking that we'll just have maybe a few isolated storms in Metro this afternoon most of the rain and storms roll in later this evening um but let's take you through this so as we head towards 2:00 temperatures today upper 80s to low 90s if you live in the mountains you'll top out in the low to mid 880s today so you'll get some of that slightly cooler air to usher in already um but again a few scattered storms could develop around 2:00 this afternoon and then continue kind of on and off as we make our way through the heat of the day and then everything shifts south of I20 as we head past 7 o' and notice that front starts to approach at this point so more storms developing up in Far North Georgia that's when maybe an isolated severe storm could be possible um up in the mountains is a little later tonight when it comes to Metro Atlanta that isolated severe threat will be mainly for the afternoon hours um now some models are thinking that this is what's going to play out what you're looking at right now that most of Metro maybe has an isolated storm popup but then later tonight so really not impacting most of your day as that front approaches we'll have storms develop mainly south of I20 and then in Far North Georgia um so again just keep that first FL weather out handy that's probably the best way to go about it um models really struggle when we have these troughs kind of sitting over the area they're smaller scale features so models don't do so well on picking up exactly where they're going to set up when they're going to kind of disip at uh so I think that we'll have the potential for scattered storms this afternoon um but as that front rolls in a little bit later tonight that's when I think we'll really start to get some juice for maybe that isolated severe storm in the far north Georgia region um and we'll also have that chance for a few showers and thunderstorms to linger even a little bit later tonight especially along in south of I 20 for your Labor Day holiday it does look a little bit drier so no First Alert weather day tomorrow we do have one today because of the chance for storms and maybe that isolated severe storm as well tomorrow does Trend a little drier but 30% coverage of showers and storms it'll be hot temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s so if you're planning to head to the pool planning to head to any of the Lakes anything outdoors uh you look good to go it's going to be a hot one uh so just make sure you know you're staying plenty hydrated and again just kind of keep your eyes to the skies be weather aware when we have the chance for any storms when there's a big holiday weekend and people are going to be spending time outside it's just important that uh you're being mindful of the weather as uh you know you don't want to be outside especially you don't want to be in a body of water if storms do roll in high temperatures the next few days after the 90s today and tomorrow it is goodbye to the 90s in fact will'll be in the low 80s Tuesday and Wednesday upper 70s Thursday and Friday so some cooler air uh we will stay unsettled I think we'll at least have a small chance for rain Tuesday Wednesday Thursday maybe some drier air ushering in on Wednesday and Thursday as well um and I'll show you on the 7-day forecast it it looks like another weather system starts to move in on Friday that'll be our next best chance for rain but definitely trending cooler what is not trending cooler in fact what is heating up is the tropics uh here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center Center a handful of disturbances coming off the coast of Africa one trying to develop in the central Atlantic with a 40% chance of development as it makes its way into the Caribbean Straits um again another disturbance just pushing off the coast of Africa and even just looking back um closer to the coast and even a little further Inland along Africa um a handful of pretty healthy looking waves may be pushing off there in the coming days so um I do think we'll start to see more activity more highlighted regions like this from the NHC um this is uh the month where we have the peak of hurricane season and we've been off to a fairly slow start so um I mean we've had a handful of storms obviously but we are far behind where I think we were this time last year and obviously the Hurricane Center indicated a really hyperactive season so we if that forecast wants to pan out I mean we don't want hurricanes to develop because then of course if they threaten the United States that's never a good thing but um the National Hurricane Center their for their forecast to verify things are going to need to start heating up we'll just have to hope anything that does Bubble Up stays away from us and really anywhere along the lower 48 uh and of course the surrounding countries so here's a look at the tropical activity 20% chance of development on that disturbance coming off the coast right now 40% chance of development on that one that'll move through the Caribbean Straits and then there's also a disturbance that's along the coast of Texas right now uh bringing some rain to the Texas and Louisiana Coastline with a 20% chance of development that's going to interact with our front so it's probably going to fall apart um and really looking long range it doesn't look like any of these are going to cause any trouble for us um but we'll be keeping a close eye on it regardless um none of them have fully developed yet they're still a little disorganized so um as they become a little more organized we'll obviously naturally get a better idea of where they're going to go and uh what they'll develop into if they do develop at all here's a look at that first alert 7-day forecast so our first alert weather day today for the chance for scattered afternoon storms so we'll be keeping an eye on Metro between about 2 and 5:00 p.m. heat of the day uh if that trough stays situated over us it will create a fairly stormy afternoon if it pushes South that'll leave us a little drier through the day uh but regardless as our cold front approaches storms will be likely for the mountains tonight and then mainly south of by 20 tonight as well it looks like storms also regenerate hot and humid regardless of temperatures in the low 90s another day in the low 90s tomorrow afternoon storms and then we're mostly dry Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures cooling off again maybe some lower humidity ushering in Wednesday Thursday second weather system moves in on Friday it looks like um we're not going to give it a first slur weather day yet we're going to let the models run a couple times uh they just started agreeing on Friday being kind of the bullseye for that next weather system so we'll give it a few runs just so we're confident that Friday will be the next rainiest day then we'll put a First Alert weather day on it but right now uh just know that Friday seems to be the next busy day weatherwise um with the highest chance for rain and then looks like we kind of calm down into next weekend so uh first day meteorological fall today we will wait another about 21 days for the autumnal equinox on September 22nd when uh kind of officially fall starts we do meteorological fall because of temperature Norms like the average temperatures when those start changing that's how we depict meteorological Seasons but um it's going to feel a little more like fall this week so hopefully you can enjoy it all right everyone thanks so much for spending some time with us for your news and your weather we hope you make it a wonderful uh rest of your long holiday weekend and we'll catch you here next time e
