a 4.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Malibu area Shake Southern California the Malibu area experienced an earthquake on Thursday morning that affected wide parts of Southern California the earthquake initially had a magnitude of 5 1 which was later downgraded to 4.7 it was followed by aftershocks with magnitudes of two 8 2 4 1 8 1.5 and two one with additional aftershocks expected in the hours and days ahead the earthquake was centered north of Malibu at a depth of approximately 7 miles and was felt in multiple areas including Malibu Hermosa Beach larada Anaheim Santa Monica Hollywood Hills and parts of the San Fernando Valley it is worth noting that shallow earthquakes which occur at depths between 0 and 4 40 Mi are usually more impactful there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage it is worth mentioning that Southern California has experienced other earthquakes in recent weeks including a 5.2 magnitude Quake south of Bakersfield Dr Lucy Jones a seismologist stated we are experiencing some earthquakes but none have caused significant damage as all of them were small this is a good good reminder that the quiet we've seen in the last few decades is not our long-term normal
