interesting right away three serves into the body of Pala badosa so clear has done her due diligence scouted her opponent trying to jam her here with those body serves into the top 50 now as well which is breaking new ground really for her career in singles out [Applause] [Applause] yes how much do you expected to come in today when the opportunity is there Andre we were discussing off there weren't we her of course her Comfort levels in and around the net it do you sense that they she will look to get in as and when the opportunity presents itself yeah absolutely I think that is her game and that is what she does better than anybody maybe on tour she will use her forehand crosscourt open the court and look to find her way into the net great transition she has Taylor and that's a mightily impressive two-hander and to work a little harder than it looked early on but it's a good hold unfortunately in this high performance environment of tennis of professional tennis half a percent is a big difference oh yeah I think all athletes try to get to a place where they're trying to play without consequence isn't it I remember listening to a couple of very famous Cricket coaches back in my homeland and they talked about getting the team to try and play with the shackles off but it's so easy to say it and it's so difficult to to get yourself into that place helps when you're confident I guess yeah that's I think that's the biggest difference when you're confident you everything is automatic you don't think about processes anymore everything just flows out of you and that's the biggest difference whereas when you haven't won a lot of matches everything seems a challenge out 30 15 second sir 30 of course the back was a significant issue has has that mod has she had to modify the serve a little bit because of the back Andrea or is it pretty much as it was because she gives a lot of credit to this man P Toledo her coach has been with her throughout the injury time I don't think she had she's had to necessarily change the motion but you can sometimes sense a bit of insecurity just as an example she's hit 200 Aces this season but she's also hit 29 double Falls she's just a few more double faults than aces in arguably one of her biggest strengths so you can just see it sometimes coming through she obviously couldn't hit as many serves during the injury as she is used to started hitting from the back of the CT earlier before she could practice sures again a record in Mages as you were reminding me boses perhaps is a little disappointing to this stage of her career still plenty of Runway ahead but [Applause] and Nick I think we will see a lot of we will get back to her major tournament run but we will see a lot of these types of rallies where Taylor Townson is trying to create some kind of chaos be creative disrupt the Rhythm and paa badosa will try and be very consistent that's her great strength play fast-paced tennis oh yes when you talk about improved movement that's a good example of that right there 1530 yeah just a bit short that approach and gave Paula enough time to get there beautiful just struggling a bit isn't she with the grip a couple of times whether it's the humidity or times he just kind of taking the the racket off the hand quickly be touching 100° Fahrenheit today close to it at least that's some strong hitting from the Spaniard who's come to play it would seem it's been Good Start From Bosa 21 with a break just picking up on the point we were discussing about this lady's record of the majors in terms of making the sharp end really of them hasn't happened perhaps as consistently as she would have liked although injury has of course got in the way and she's actually one and five in the last 16 of Majors now of course that's all relative but something that I'm sure she'll be looking to to correct given the fact she is now at full fitness no you're absolutely right Nick and I think the reason why it is surprising is that when you see her play and see how she hangs with the best in the world you just expect a big run at those major tournaments so it's somewhat surprising that she's only had that one quarterfinal at rangos but she's still young how much do you think the injury has changed her Outlook I mean we hear it so often don't we players have 6 months 9 months whatever it is do you think that's given her a different perspective slightly on on the value of being out there week in week out I think in the long run it will help her I really believe so I think you develop a different kind of appreciation for being out there for the competition and sometimes tennis players get caught up in the daytoday of a tennis players life but once you were out of it you miss it very quickly most of of us anyway left out that was an awkward return but spia just didn't quite react quickly enough that upper tier is filling up very quickly chance for town in to break straight back [Applause] juice Advantage B for that SS in Duck deep under pressure and defended with depth that is so important to have against pados is that depth it doesn't even have to be as quick but you need to have depth otherwise paa will be all over [Applause] [Applause] hitting our spots very impressively on serve so far man such a beautiful service motion too very simple nice trophy position and that's the toughest part about playing Paula Bosa which I had the questionable pleasure of doing when she's playing well while we have Taylor's coach here John Williams yeah I think he's looking at the iPads because the stats right that's right and if you haven't been to usopen.org do heads there because uh can follow us on all the social channels keeping you up to date with what's going on across the grounds you those iPads are actually taken down just before the match and they are handed to the coaches and the coaches can effectively do what they want I was watching the ROK CaRu match yesterday and the the lady came down with the iPad handed it to kenan's father and he just said no no thanks I don't want that and he sent her back up so each to their own some like to look at the data some don't does that change the sport coaches with the ability to sort of analyze things mid-match do that has that changed it a bit do you think for I mean I know I know it's very personal there we are ah there we are nice uh I don't think so because in the end there is just so many or so much information you can give to a player that they can process while playing in the midst of the heat of a battle I do however think so that it's that it's more of a confirmation of the feelings you already have you just are more sure in what you're already seeing on the court at least if you're a good coach [Applause] Anakin I don't know how you feel but it just seems like Taylor is not quite feeling her forehand today you see some hesitation even when she makes it a few unforced errors on that side already opting for a slice every now and then and there we have it yeah with respect she does not want to be hitting forehand from 10 ft behind the Baseline does she in order to play her game the way she wants to [Applause] let first time trying that and it may not be the last as well Town inen closes the Gap that's some real depth right now isn't there to American tennis on both the male and the female side nine American women inside the top 50 coming into this US Open that's a tough second serve to get on to isn't it a lot of pace on it 98 mph second serf I wish I had a first surve like this you can see the confidence oozing out of every single por of Bosa when you played the Spaniard what did you find the most pre izing situation how did she make you feel uncomfortable the most pressurizing thing against paa is that she has no weaknesses virtually when she's playing well she serves well her forehand is great her backand is fantastic and she moves well so you just have to play well and that in itself creates pressure in your mind cuz you know I can't get away with anything and so just her presence on court is really intimidating when she's playing well as she's clearly doing here and the only thing that you sometimes do feel she can be emotionally unstable when she's not playing well that's the only thing tennis wise really hard to make out a weakness against Paula just being told the heat rule is in place right now as well and what that means effectively is if this goes to three and one of the players says with like a break there'll be a 10-minute break that's how that works and the ladies draw the men's draw it'll be between the third and fourth sets both players can decline it though should they wish I think that's a good play for Taylor to try and get to the net more disrupt the rallies more cuz clearly Pala is feeling the ball really well is so consistent from the back of the core just disrupt the Rhythm more frequently if she can town and magnificent pickup and to take the pace out of it as well which was [Applause] crucial first played this event as a 16y old did Taylor got a wild card into the qualifying of course she was a standout Junior here in the states decade plus ago [Applause] [Applause] oh ow Point again a little rushed on the ball wasn't she maybe a little inde Ive as well possibly the Spaniard with an opportunity to secure a double Break [Applause] Out Left Hand has have varying degrees of ability to put spin on the ball don't they is she one of those players that can really make the ball turn on that ad side Andrea in terms of obviously one where it lands and then two where it moves to because it certainly looks as though she gets a good amount of turn on the ball absolutely and she's one of the few players who are able to have the ball continue to move after it bounces on the other side which is natural of course the bounce breaks down the rotation and the pace a little bit but Taylor has such good heaviness on the ball that it continues to move as you can see here really beautifully even though the ball was out been a big issue defending a second serve so far just one of eight [Applause] ow and paa going after the forehand and there we have it only the 11% on that second serve oh feeling the pressure Advantage trying to get a little more depth on the second and her support Camp looking rather glum in the corner has missed it and the frustration continues here for the American it's the 26th so the Spaniard who's had a wonderful summer on the North American hard courts serving to win the opening set and it's been pretty much Flawless from us so far absolutely I think it might look like Taylor Townson is not having the best day but it's all the pressure that's coming from the other side not a lot of unforced Errors good serving great moving Taylor has to play exceptionally well like this point right [Music] here yeah that was sorry no no to get through the barriers that badosa is putting up for her today yeah it was interesting because at the end of that point she could just tell herself pushed her arms forward as if to say listen I've got to try and take the ball a bit earlier here I'm getting pushed around the court too often [Applause] 30 yeah it's definitely a pattern the moment Taylor is able to step in take control that's when she's in a better position but BEDA is making it so hard today she needs to find a way here Taylor now you referenced the double F tally this season which probably is a bit higher than she would like that one has just opened the door for the American let [Applause] use can feel the intent can't you from town in in the the sort of willingness to take the ball a bit earlier but has not many opportunities that are coming her way to do that yeah absolutely and you could almost see her picking up the pace in her ground strokes in this previous rally so she feels that she needs to do a bit more here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and maybe it's working got a clean strike on that one bosa's first serve percentage nose dived in that game that's got those with the Stars and Stripes with a little bit more to cheer about here great job by Taylor Townsen here to adjust her Pace put a bit more on her ground strokes breaks through for the first time here up dealt with a return that was an awkward one well Sports of ugly spin on it but when a keep control of it nicely 15 30 not the most frightening of second serves Pace wise it I've kept a close ey on the speed gun and she's around 70 M an hour mostly for a second serves and obviously it's becoming a bit of an issue here because BOS is getting on top of it relentlessly he's got all the data and his fingertips 15 [Applause] 40 there with time to spare and the Spaniard with set points out 3 l [Applause] [Music] just been a little disappointing from Taylor townzen hasn't found the level we've seen from a this summer so far Bosa leads by a set because pedosa has been excellent out left first serve nicely done here by Taylor trying to change directions earlier in the rally maybe that's the way to go for her here in the second set let Herve oh what a return that was talk about neutralizer serve 15 [Music] [Music] 30 up L up BS do sometimes get away from her doesn't it and at the moment she's having a few issues with it it seems like it almost slips from her fingers and gets too far in front of her and she's chasing the ball and the way her motion is she needs to have it right above her could shot that to see how off balanced she was as well yeah you could see how she was reaching for it just would have liked a bit more depth wouldn't she you sense on the approach here yeah just again that it's that's a good shot but either you go short crosscourt so the way is longer for the person to run or you rip it and Rush the net yeah just the remaining insecurity from the first set forehand that was not going so well 10 unforced errors off that wing for Taylor town and as we saw before well this is a bit worrying only made three first serves in the game two doubles rhythm is looking a little unsettled let Yes actually playing mixed doubles with Donald Young is Taylor towns in Donald's going to be calling it quits on his tennis career here this week he's been playing a bit of pickle ball I think as Donald but he hasn't really been seen around the tennis scene for a while of course they know each other having grown up together of course she was actually coached by Donald's father wasn't she in the early days in Chicago Advantage just not able to take advantage of the the chances that she's getting is she yeah and a lot of balls flying long on Taylor Townsen and you mentioned mened it before Nick it is very hot today almost 5° hotter than it was the last day maybe the strings are just a bit soft oh nicely done there it was the crosscourt slice approach yes made badosa reach a bit more and this is just a beauty [Applause] Advantage [Applause] Bosa had a chance didn't she had a a fairly good look at the for end in fairness just again that shot is not necessarily been as reliable for her today as she would have liked it was a lengthy game and our fourth coaches any trouble at all Andrea did you never I just gave them the sarcastic thumbs up yeah actually saw one of your old coaches yesterday Peta po that she was out there with car M yeah not a great day for M yeah tough first round against Sebastian Coro was playing some great tennis on the hard courts here 30 it's such a good combination because she doesn't really have to hit the ball particularly hard look what she is she's two feet in inside the Baseline there so you're taking the ball so early that your opponent's got no time really to recover off the position that Bosa finds herself in and that's such a good point you're making Nick because often times we think if we want to take time away from our opponent we have to hit harder and faster when in reality just your positioning can help you out without adjusting your arm speed at all 4 15 game it's a good game he did that as well doesn't feel like she's too far away does it but it's you know 5 10% more out of her game here she can definitely keep this competitive yeah it just feels like now in the second set badosa has given her a few more opportunities a few more looks on her surf less depth in her ground strokes Bosa so Taylor Townson really needs to find her intensity now and I think she could she could get into this match quite quickly here that was again great depth from Bosa and maybe the two games where she had a bit less of it have ended here already been a good front runner in the majors as Bosa we often talk about that being a with the best players she's 21 and one in her last 22 Grand Slam matches when she wins the opening set is po so it's been tough to have to rain her in from a winning position take a swipe at that one as still more to get them on the case not much happening for USA though out here Town Zen needs to try and up the levels Lo and that's not going to help sorts of points not always easy running onto a smash but nonetheless a ball that she should make and she knows it one and Champion with cak of course good story isn't it because played a lot of the year with her dad Meyer and I think caka didn't have a partner send her a message saying listen to you fancy in and Townsen kind of had to tell her dad May listen sorry not going to play with you a slightly better option that's the life though isn't it not easy being a doubles player yeah ended up winning the title her first major coming at the all England Club doesn't get much better than that 30 15 the only disappointing thing is you don't get your membership if you win the doubles do you Andrea I know I didn't know that the singles H membership for the singles only okay I didn't know that you close so close but you're still a woman a champion yeah that is true gets to use the champion locker room yeah 40 15 no she is hanging in there and she is trying to keep it close hoping for another window of opportunity that paa badosa might present to her or not back very quickly honor because of that wasn't able to react [Applause] out 40 30 it at least feels as if Townsend is a bit closer in the set than it was in the first set snuffed out with the six Ace from the [Applause] Spaniard for CR H 15 lck and you can hear it in the grunting from Paula badosa she's uping the intensity here really tries to make a push to break through here hasn't really been able to engage the crowd has she either towns in so far I mean this is a home slam obviously it's a little earlier in the day but hasn't really been a to get them involved in the match so far can play a big part here can't they yeah still time that was well done 4 15 [Applause] [Applause] in a nightmare that second serve today having so many issues in terms of just putting under pressure in this scenario three of 16 points who's won out just again the hesitation on the forehand for Town and she's not fully swinging through it's almost as if she has a handbreak on it and now the audience is waking up 12:20 was about time I think the honey juice might be kicking in and honey deuces are now only all you're only allowed to buy two at a time now new rule okay just as an FYI [Music] ad another unfortunate time for a double because the pressure firmly growing now on this lady textbook tennis here using the entire geometry off the court opening Some Space Taylor with this surf right here look how big she makes the court and then into the open Corner well done Applause from paatu yeah she you know she had a little chance there foram was a touch shaky wasn't it it was good enough but you s of felt that the time she had on the ball wasn't necessarily helping her this would be a big game to get through though that's just that and this is still competitive and swns then asking for a bit more love here three games on second set such an important game for the American here you could just sense that Paula badosa was stepping on the gas pedal starting to Grant upping the intensity great job and holding her off for now [Applause] very rare as well just looking back actually through the games that Townson has been able to win the opening point point in a in a service game BOS isn't has necessarily been conducive to building a lot of pressure things might be happening now though 15 [Applause] samel [Applause] it's a good bounce back as the previous point would have been a huge disappointment having had control of it she's only been able to break the Spaniard once so far and of course was at 52 in the opening set this has a bit more significance magnificent from Taylor towns who's been a little quiet out there at times but the F crucial game for townzen to build on what she's achieved so far here [Applause] he's made 17 of 21 first serves in this set as the Lefty and has only lost three points when she's made it yeah she really has picked up her game in the second set is serving better managing to get to the net more frequently and here we have it both players serving exceptionally well when the first serve finds the court no mistake with the overhead this time around such a tough return Isn't it that one into the right hip Andrea that initially just created the short ball for her hey you're a lefty Nick you know how no I'm a righty I wish I was I thought you were a lefty we've only played once but next week okay I'll be ready definitely picking our game up here Townsen just the right time [Applause] well a very quizzical look from Taylor towns end because her overhead at times today has been rather vulnerable and it's often been the one she's moved on to isn't it Andrea that's been a bit of an issue for her yeah I wonder if maybe a dry volley is the better option when you have to run up to it not easy to control the pace big chance for the Spaniard town in getting a break in the previous game first break of this second set looking to consolidate here how did she get out of this problem with the second serve Andrea because it's being punished time after time is there a way she can is there something she can do here to switch this up I almost think she should stick with that Lefty wide serve and keep it very low because she keeps trying to go for those kick serves and badosa is very tall it doesn't bother her at all on either side both forehead and backand pal is handling those kick serves quite well maybe she should try to slice it and keep it nice and low and have badosa lift the ball up so she can take control pedosa did brilliantly to deal with the short [Applause] [Applause] ball said coming into this event the Spaniard that her progress has been perhaps a little quicker than even she thought it would be over the summer surprised herself somewhat [Applause] [Applause] it's done well was it a makeer a volley though felt as though there was a wasn't it I think she just Leed One Step kind of Stood Still instead of continued to move forward she would have had it a bit higher but great job by Taylor Townsen on that return that was a tough one to neutralize big opportunity for badosa this was such a significant game this isn't it for towns just got to keep moving forwards here it's been her best tennis throughout the course of the hour and a half but she's giving herself an opportunity but do are for the first time just showing a few signs of frustration and she has held on Donald Young I think that is isn't it watching on of course he's playing doubles with Taylor here in the mix bringing the curtain down on his career nice spotting from our camera crew he trying to hide but we find you everywhere there's a lefty as well another one I knew was a great Junior Donald wasn't he one of the best now well done and this has been a big change compared to the first set Taylor towns and going after those second serves with a lot more decisiveness has been able to turn this match around can she close it out yeah second serve points one in the opening set seven of 13 in this set just four of 11 [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] turn in with a rather frustrated look being a to build on the opening Point here which was a good one no way back for a wonderful second deliver perhaps to call upon them here because the American serving to square things up [Applause] would you believe it completely miss it return [Applause] and maybe just some scar tissue from the first set on the forehand side she had gotten it into order now a little opening for Bosa here 33 unforced errors today on the lady in your picture oh has cut them down significantly in the second set that's the for that's the scar tissue from the first set players unfortunately try to forget but somewhere in the subconscious it's still floating around good finish it's been a bit unsteady at times in the overhead 1540 [Applause] the fra is in the forehand though sadly have come back to bite Taylor towns in that's a reprieve for the 26 seed [Music] oh 15 low so well controlled easy to get the ball up and down from there so quickly hard the wrist has to work there did well 30 [Applause] Struck it well enough 15 it's been the game plan in this second set much more consistently trying to take that both the first and second serve on as Andrea says and you can see the damage it can do when she is able to connects as she [Applause] wishes that's a magnificent serve Under Pressure so many of them wanting and willing this lady some better things here serving to stay in this it's a legitimate play as Taylor well knows plays so much doubles she reacted well yeah let firster out [Applause] just a moment of hesitation and it proved so devastating last 30 and it ended up being a very difficult ball to hit didn't it absolutely look where she was completely outside of the Court you could see her thinking should I take it in the air should I let it drop and it was already too late in that moment love 30 here now things have got away from a at a rapid rate as well in the 26 seed has got a handful of match points 15 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 40 golf between the points one behind the first and the second serve of this match have been very telling for townzen needs a desperately needs another first here [Applause] it's been a brilliant summer for Pala Bosa and it's picking up further Pace here in New York the Spaniard back playing somewhere near her best tennis overcomes what could be a tough test today beats Taylor towns in in straights in an hour and 40 Rox solid performance from Paula badosa really
