Arizona. Blake, thank you very much. stay cool. If you can. It's going to seem to Capitol right now. We could be looking at a government shutdown in less than 3 weeks yesterday. House Speaker Mike Johnson scrapping plans to move forward with another vote for his stopgap funding plan. Johnson spending plan facing opposition from both parties. Our congressional correspondent joins us live right now. And it somehow I get the feeling we've been here before. So what this time is the likely path forward? >> The like a path forward is that they're going to pass some sort of bill to keep the government from shutting down on September. 30th and look, there's not a lot of an appetite on Capitol Hill right now. Even if former President Trump, he's pushing for a government shutdown if he doesn't get things, everything that he has asked Republicans to do, including passing this bill that would require a physical proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in the U.S. critics of the bill say that it's unnecessary. Multiple independent studies have found that non-citizen voting is first of all, it's illegal. And second of all does not happen often in the United States. But the there appears to be some resignation among members of Congress that eventually a government funding bill will be passed, will avert shutdown in the near future. And frankly, this will be a conversation they have again after the general election. Take a listen. >> I think ultimately what will happen a miraculous compromise and the big boys and still get fast. And know that there everybody will go home and complain about bad it is. We have one day to here and one constitutional duty and budget. And we heard years. said we're not going to do it and >> we can you not to do it. ♪ >> And so again, the September 30th to do it. Speaker Johnson saying he wants to regroup over the weekend, come up with a better plan forward. There's the multiple Democrats and Republicans now who say they want a bipartisan negotiation between the House and the Senate to figure a path forward and prevent government shutdown which could be extremely harmful for members heading into the 2024 election. >> It incredible cynicism there on the part of the member of Congress. You talk to. But the bottom line, any chance of a government shutdown this year? >> It does not seem likely in a large part of that is because of the optics, the 20 24 election dollars right around the corner. You know, about 50 or so days away and the possibility of shutting down the government could be something that Democrats could very well use to argue why they are better suited to take back the House of Representatives and that are suited to lead after the 2024 election. That's a point that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of you the most vocal Democrats on Capitol Hill had earlier today. Take a listen. >> This is a Republican fight, not even Republicans fighting Democrats. It's Republicans fighting Republicans. And that has been the story of this time. Republicans have been have not been able to fully fund our government in 2 years. They have not been able to pass any significant legislation into law yet despite there being plenty of opportunities. And I hope my hope is that they will be able to at some point for the good of the American people the next couple of months. >> So again, government shutdown looking unlikely in in large part. That is a messaging thing. All 435 members, the House of Representatives having election this year, some have chosen retire just over. A 3rd of the Senate has elections as well. And again, optic since shutting down the government before the election, especially to caved to demands of former President Trump would not necessarily be good optics for Republican members of Congress. And so here's a very real possibility that there is some caving that happens in the next week here that in negotiations with Democrats about the
