Colombian wingsuit flyer Jonathan Florez was
crowned the winner in the finals of the second Wingsuit Flying
World Championship in central China's Hunan Province on Sunday. It's the second consecutive year that China
has hosted the championship, which saw 16 flyers from
around the globe facing a drop from 1,433 meters above sea level. From a cliff edge on Tianmen Mountain, the
flyers had to complete a loop-like flight in the valley and land at the finishing line
on a mountain road. Florez managed his flight in 23.4 seconds
earning him the victory. However, this year's championships have been
overshadowed by the death of Hungarian wingsuit flyer Victor Kovats who lost his life after
he plunged in a trial flight on Tuesday. Wingsuit flying is considered the most challenging
and dangerous event in extreme sports, and there are no more than 20 wingsuit flyers
worldwide are qualified to participate in the competition.
