there's a theme to Today's show there's a theme I like this right it's it's like High School uh uh English class all over again what was the theme of the book what was the motif today's is action speak louder than words it doesn't matter how many times the Panthers told us they like their young Corners they liked their secondary they had a good practice with their actions today they told us they are terrified about their secondary they told us with their actions which are louder than anything they could possibly say at a press conference we better buckle up for a team that might not be able to stop the pass very well focusing on the improvements on the offense they like their offense their actions told us they like their offense right Focus there please because the defense is going to have a hard time stopping the pass uh today was waiver claim day yesterday was cut down day which meant every team had to go down to 53 players on their roster many starting with 90 48 72 hours before had to get all the way down to 53 say their goodbyes say their goodbyes and maybe there see you laters because a lot of guys were coming back on practice squads today was the day we found out uh who the Panthers claimed now today is one of the few days on the entire calendar year where the best team to be today was the Panthers they had the number one waiver wire priority so anybody that was waved across the entire NFL if the Panthers wanted them they got him now there's there's one caveat and and I saw some confusion about this online um if you are a vested veteran so if you've been in the NFL a certain amount of time then you don't go on waivers you when when you are cut you are just immediately released so somebody Deontay Foreman who obviously has been in the league a long time uh when he was cut by the Browns he he could have signed 10 minutes later with whoever he wanted to he also had the right to wait and potentially go back to the Browns um the difference is if you're younger you go on waivers and then it's kind of like being drafted again right if if somebody was cut by the the ners and was claimed by the Panthers they they had no choice they had to go to Carolina they couldn't say no thank you unless they didn't want to play in the NFL anymore and retired so the Panthers had the number one claim spot they claimed six players I actually thought six seven was kind of the minimum that they'd claim uh six players but it's still a ton it's more than anyone else claimed in the NFL uh three of them cornerbacks they tra uh claimed Shamar Bartholomew off the Jets Keenan Isaac off the Bucks Tariq Castro Fields off the commanders but even that wasn't saying loudly enough that they did not like their secondary because remember just a couple days prior they traded for Michael Jackson a corner from Seattle and remember since waiver claims remember those veterans I talked about they signed a veteran Lonnie Johnson cornerback that uh was cut from the Texans so he's another corner so in the last four or five days they've brought in five new cornerbacks three claimed off waivers one signed after being cut and another traded for that's an action that speaks louder than any compliment they've given their secondary and by the way it aligns with what common sense would say the last two times we've played cons and cons which is where we name the thing we're most confident about and the thing we're most concerned about when it comes to the Pan the last two times my concern has been the corner opposite of J JC horn this is more than just danne Jackson got hurt right cuz danne Jackson hurt expected to miss two three-ish games maybe four as far as expectations go and he was penciled in as the starter opposite of JC horn you don't shift out darn near your entire cornerback room and shuffle them in for new players because one guy needs to be replaced for less than a month you do that because you showed up in Camp looked around and realized you severely mismanaged your cornerback room the players that we thought were vying for a spot uh somebody like DeShawn Jameson somebody like Lamar Jackson somebody like some of the these young players they're no longer even a part of the team that's a really really tough place to go and these changes have come less than two weeks to game one less than two weeks to the start of the regular season when when the the metaphorical bullets are live that should show you what kind of season this will be particularly early in the season you know at the risk of sounding negative about the Panthers you are going into your season unsettled at one of the most important positions in the league if you look at who the highest paid players in defense across the league are lot of Corners there's Edge rushers right there's people that get after the quarterback and people that guard number one wide receivers more than allball linebackers a lot of times more than interior defensive linemen a lot of times more than safeties they are completely shaking up one of the most important positions on a defense less than two weeks before week one growing pains in week one and two and three are to be expected miscommunications are to be expected NFL football you know I say this all the time it's wildly complicated and simple uh right part of it is just hustle do your best fly around part of it is you have to be on the exact same page with high level concepts with with every other player on the field the reason why it's considered the ultimate team sport is because if you're out there with 11 guys and 10 do their job perfectly and one messes up that could be a 90 yard touchdown particularly at corner so let's say the the the the Panthers and evero their defensive coordinator aerro evero uh do such a great job that everybody that's been in Camp for the last month most of the time does their job perfect but if that one corner spot is is unsettled because they have to play a keen and Isaac that they just claimed or they have to play a Michael Jackson who they just traded for if that player makes a mistake that that defense isn't going to be great and it's the same on offense right if everybody does their job except the left tackle the quarterback's hurt it's why it's the ultimate team sport the the Panthers just told us with their actions they need more darts right if if if every one of these young cornerbacks is a dart throw they just ask for completely new darts they're the they're at the part at the the carnival where you're trying to play the game right and and maybe it's like knocked the the milk bottles off with the the softball uh and you're I got this and and then you miss with the first they're reupping they're just going like you know what how much is it you know five balls for $10 here's another $10 they tried with Lamar Jackson didn't work they tried with deshun Jameson didn't work they tried with this guy they tried with that guy they tried with the other guy none of them worked so here's another $10 give me Shamar Bartholomew Keenan Isaac Tariq Castro Fields uh Lonnie Johnson and Michael Jackson we'll see if we can we can do something with those just a complete restart elsewhere they also claimed an outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff out of the Seahawks um my first thought was oh you're just going to take all the Seahawks cuz they also claimed John rigan off the Seahawks and that's obviously where uh Dave Canales and Dan Morgan have a a history working out there in Seattle but uh Sheriff's yeah sheriff is a undrafted rookie free agent who had a really good preseason so it actually makes sense three sacks bunch of pressures LED all rookies in a bunch of stats this preseason so that one makes sense uh the rigan or rodigan is probably somebody that that Dave Canales has a history with and then the one offensive lineman they claimed was Jarrett Kingston uh off the ners which is a uh a bolster to a position that they are going to very intensely value because they want to run the ball we'll talk about that later
