thanks for staying with us as we cover your health tonight news 15's medical editor Dr John lepri recently warned us about a leria outbreak involving certain deli meats and now a recall is expanding in the wake of nine deaths and dozens of illnesses and tonight Dr lpri has added advice to keep you and your family safe leria contamination has forced the company Bor head to issue a recall of its deling meat since we first brought you the story the number of ill and dead continue to climb Bor head has recalled 7 million pounds of deling meat after leria contamination was found in its liver worst the recall was extended to all products from this plant with the following product codes production and sell by dates this recall centers around their Jarrett Virginia plant which is since closed the USDA has released a report on this plant citing 69 violations over the past year unfortunately more people have fallen sick normally you can expect a few days of nausea vomiting and diarrhea however in some this disease can become severe this is especially true when elderly certain medical conditions in those who are pregnant to date a total of 57 have required hospitalization and nine have died now there's a lesson here for all of us leria is a bacteria that thrives in cold moist environments like your refrigerator if not handled properly it can easily spread through a processing plant or your kitchen in addition to cleaning everything has a shelf life and when it doubt throw it out now heat will kill leria and as an added precaution experts recommend you first heat all of this to 165° before eating food contamination happens and no one can predict the next recall so stay safe and wishing you better health Dr John lapri News 15
