front it is um very unfortunate for Joe D pass uh that is an emotional tie from the players who have been around him um and at the end of the day you grieve you have your mour period but now you have to play football and maybe that is a spark plug for this offensive line to say you know what we're going to do this for Joe D we're going to play together we're going to play Fast we're going to play physical we're going to do everything he taught us to do and we're going to do it this one game or maybe the whole season we're doing this for Jodie Ravens will be wearing a Shield shaped purple decal on their helmet that has the words jod D and jacobe with a number 12 of course for the late jacobe Jones who passed away of natural causes just prior to the start of training camp so a lot of emotion the Ravens are carrying into Kansas City to start this season and then of course when you talk about the offense it's the addition of Derrik Henry we didn't see him in preseason except for the joint practice against the Packers and that one Glimpse makes you think this could be something special special you know I I I did a little research this morning and I'm like I didn't know last year he led the lead in Yak yards so yards after contact he had 930 yards when somebody made contact with him and normally was probably you know behind their beh behind their line of scrimmage but a guy that big that strong paired with Lamar Jackson who's the best scrambling running quarterback in the N the history of the NFL it's going to be great to see how they match what do they do well together how does Todd monin does he put him under does he put Lamar under Center is they in the pistol or they in shotgun it's going to be interesting to see I think even spags the defense coordinator for Kansas City he wants to see what happens because he has to see how he's going to call the defense against something like that let's pause 10 seconds for station identification you're listening to the Ravens game going to play Under center or is he going to be in the pistol where he's in shotgun and Derrick Henry's behind him so that's going to be interesting to see how that plays out I think also is interesting to see how does he what type of personnel did they run with him is he going to be in 12 personnel with two tight ends and two receivers and one back or three receivers and one tight end and one back and I think think 12 Personnel they didn't use a lot last year no I think I want to say 11% almost fewest in the league it was fourth fewest in the league could I see them adding quite a bit to that yes because Isaiah likely has shown that he can also play can block you want to get your best 11 but what's a good running pass Personnel grouping 12 so it'll be interesting to see where for 12 years at NC State I mean that's that's impressive especially in this day and age in college football does it feel like it's been 12 years for you uh it does it feels like longer couching is uh touching his dog years you know so it's 84 years appropriately spoken but uh it's been a great ride man I love where I'm at you have a great fan base and and and you're a heck of a coach go go back in time before we get into this game that we're going to have here on ESPN radio and ABC Tennessee and NC State coming up on on Saturday night go back to that High School coach coaching in Kansas I think you were coaching wide receivers back in the day uh before you switch the defensive side of the ball how how different is the man I'm talking to now compared to the guy was coaching wide outs back then at at a high school in Kansas yeah well I've learned a lot since then for sure and uh yeah I was the varsity receiver and dine coach and uh G JV offensive coordinator it was a lot of fun man I really enjoyed you know the the relationships uh building up young people and the game the X's and O's all that's the same but U definitely have learned a lot from from my experiences with a lot of really good coaches and and learned a lot through some you know adversity as well what's your favorite thing going back to that time to now just about coaching ball and as you mentioned the relationships you develop that's it I mean it's the lifelong relationships you end up with with so many of your players and you know guys and now I'm actually recruiting sons of guys that I've coached and and so it's just you know seeing them succeed in life seeing them uh become husband fathers successful in their their business Pursuits and watching them grow up and and who they become and knowing that you know I had a hand in that um those relationships are really special and um and they go all the way back I mean it's amazing how many people you talk to that you coached when you were in your 20s you know and now I'm 52 and those relationships mean a lot to me man they're special what is that like recruiting a a a player of uh someone that you coached what's that like yeah that's crazy you say that right yeah yeah yeah it's it's happening though and uh it definitely makes you feel your age for one um but it's rewarding you know I mean obviously if you coach somebody and they want you to recruit their son that says a lot about the experience that you shared and those things are meaningful to me and uh more and more it's happening so as you get more and more gray hair you have more and more of those kind of relationship opportunities down the road hey coach Dorne I didn't realize Adam viner's kid was kicking at Louisville you know my brother Devin coached him with with the Colts back in the day I'm going wait Vin has a as a son playing in college damn I didn't know that either well there you go we we learn something new every day Dave Dorne head coach NC State he's got a heck of a football team they're going up against the BS the top 25 matchup you'll hear it right here on ESPN Radio watch it with Rd Herby and the crew on ABC that I went back and watched a bit of that that first game uh against Chad for the BS they're snapping the ball coach 8 to9 seconds between plays how do you defend that how do you get ready for that yeah well we've had two Scout teams you know rapid firing plays at our defense and so they'll be ready I think it's more about how do you stop it you know and we definitely have them ready for the tempo we have a good plan our kids are very focused on what they need to do and now it's just executing you know I mean you got to get him off schedule you can't let him like he was in that game I think he completed his first 10 passes you know I mean you got to get them off schedule get them behind the chains on downs and make them have to slow down a little bit thinking about what plays they want to call yeah you're talking about Nico malava the the the the Young quarterback for Tennessee and he's a big dude 66 about 210 215 when you watched him on tape coach what really stood out to you you know uh he's very poised he definitely doesn't play his age I thought the bowl game he showed his legs with three rushing touchdowns and then in the first game he just managed their offense he was accurate he had touch he had arm strength um they really didn't test his mobility in that game a whole lot but you know he can run CU you see that on film he's a complete player and he's got really good talent around him what are a couple things that are I don't want to say crucial that that's that's that's the wrong term are important to your squad when it comes to defending Josh hypo and that that remarkable uptempo offense he runs yeah I mean I think it starts with your first down success you need to get them into you know longer yardage plays and then your third Downs you want third and Longs instead of third and ones and you got to win those Downs you know when you get them in Long yardage those are when you talk about the odds of football you know in defense you should win third long and third and one is a down you want to win but it's harder to win and we got to get off the field and get our offense on the field and let them keep their their offense on the sideline we got to have complimentary football as we call it with you know long drives using the to get points and defense getting off the field quickly with three and outs or creating turnovers week one probably wasn't what you wanted to see from your squad but as Bill parel famously said when I used to cover the Dallas Cowboys that's a coachable win what did you learn about your squad that was coachable coming into week two after week one yeah I mean I love how we finished the game you know I mean 21-0 in the fourth quarter I think we we had some adversity we didn't uh execute um and a lot of different facets the way we wanted to but the guys were very coachable on the sideline they took Corrections they went out there and got it done and made big plays when we needed them down the stretch and I thought we were very physical in the fourth quarter uh obviously we need to start faster than we did last week and it is coachable film there's a lot of stuff fundamentally that we need to do better in this game yeah we were talking about this uh earlier this week coach and I'm fascina to get your thoughts on this I I don't think fans understand how hard it is to win on any Saturday or Sunday whether it's college or pro football much less a title there are three active coaches in college football that have won a national championship that's it the list is dbos Sweeney m brown and Kirby Smart that's it if you can't put into perspective how difficult it is to win a college football game yeah it's I say that all the time like you have to celebrate wins because they're hard it's really hard to get a win and there's so many games that um come down to one or two possessions and sometimes even one or two plays you know and there's 125 players there's 50 plus staff members there's a lot of moving Parts things happen on game day they are out of your control with penalties sometimes injuries um and you have to overcome a lot of things and you know sometimes you're on the road and the fans are against you as well so earning victories is uh something that we covet and you got to work really hard I mean the scoreboard is is really a reflection of consequences from a lot of things that happen not just on game day but throughout the week and the reward is winning you know and it's hard you got to fight for it and this definitely is going to be one of those games we got to fight for every second we get out there you know coach Nick Sabin once said in his last few years at Alabama he told us after wins it was more relief then Rejoice you've been around this game a long time is that similar to you right now or do you rejoice the wins and it's not relief no I think earlier in my career I was that way um I've really learned to celebrate that's awesome we and and and uh the next day may be painful you know cuz there's a lot of things that you didn't like on the film but you only get so many hours a season to celebrate a win and I definitely take advantage of that I've learned that the hard way was there a remaining in the half in the pocket Jackson steps up and he dumps it late and incomplete he got rid of it to avoid a sack trying to find Z flowers but much like momes on the interception Lamar Jackson had to step up and get rid of the football in a hurry and how about Mike Dana he puts a hit on Lamar Jackson without his helmet helmet he lost his helmet on the snap still playing through the whistle
