by the way Manny expecting a child dude good for Manny wow there be there will be a little Manny Chang running around here somewhere at some point I don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet but uh anyway congratulations to Manny one of our producers at the five reason Sports Network all right so let's get to it um everybody has pretty much seen the body uh cam video at this point everybody has pretty much seen the dolphin statement everyone has pretty much seen the police unions statement uh two very different statements of the same incident and two very different perspectives on what happened here and what it means and I I can just say this before we start because this is going to be controversial no matter what direction we go with it we felt we needed to address it is that we are at a point where you can't even ask certain questions like that's where our civil discourse is which probably will be evidenced again tonight by the presidential debate uh you can't you can't really even ask anything so I literally on Twitter I have stayed away from giving uh opinions you know on the five reason Sports account related to this because again that account represents a lot of people it's one thing to have sports opinions there and have people argue but we start getting into these other areas you know cultural social uh you know racial all these elements it's it's not my place to speak for 50 people so I don't do any of that kind of stuff uh from that account so I mean literally all I did to prepare for this show was just get a sense of where the public is with this or our our audiences with this is I just pulled like who is most at fault in this incident and you know I is Tyreek is it the police or is it equally both and I mean the poll results you know came in kind of where I'm at which is and again we'll get to what precipitated this which is you know that most at fault uh was the in this incident for escalating it but uh and and I can tell you that uh 81% went that direction and I think like 5% Tyreek and then 14% was both but there's I looked at the quote tweets and there's a lot of offense taken to even the question being asked I've noticed that yeah which is which is hard because it's like um you know I I I think um obviously in today's society you know when people have opinions on things and sometimes they are very nuanced opinions and nuanced opinions can turn into people taking a clip of it taking it out of context and painting you a certain way I I think that there is a little bit of hesitation from that standpoint but I also I think it's really important no matter what anyone's opinions are on any hot hot button topic to be able to have a Discord and to be able to have conversations about this stuff because listen not not everyone's going to agree um I think we need to respect every side of arguments and I also think that sometimes um I I've been open in certain instances to even changing my Minds on things right like I may feel a certain way going into a conversation I I may feel a different way after hearing dissenting opinions afterward so I do feel like conversations uh we shouldn't be afraid to have conversations about stuff like this well we shouldn't but I've got again friends of mine uh particularly black friends of mine who have reached out saying that the you know they know me and they know where I stand on things but that the polls shouldn't even been put up and and again I'm going to respect opin that opinion as well yeah but I was I was a little surprised by that reaction to it because to me what the poll ended up doing was kind of just showing the division on certain topics of this and not just division but uh differences in point of view perception you know someone sees one video and they're going to see something totally different based on what their experience is and also on what their prejudices are and those things affect it and that's why we have a 50-50 country right now basically um with not a whole lot of room in between and I and again I there's a couple things that stuck out to me without getting into the incident itself okay first thing is just from a sports media person's perspective who's covered all the teams in this town for basically three decades um I was surprised and I would say kind of pleasantly so but I was surprised by the way the Dolphins handled this and I I'll say that because I don't think uh and I give credit to um to an Nolan and her staff on this uh if if indeed it was them who crafted that statement and and kind of took the approach to make the players available on Sunday which I is not a small step in this market I was actually think about this previous Dolphins teams and they had a PR staff of which I'm friendly with a person who used to run that but I can I my prediction would be and I would have to ask him directly to know for sure but the great Harvey green um my prediction would be or or my sense it would be they might might not have made the players available on Sunday in previous Dolphins regime and perhaps especially if Savin was running the team or um oh yeah or maybe pels was running the team uh but I I just part of this is McDaniel's philosophy to be more open we saw that with hard KNX and everything else so maybe he plays into it but the fact a that Tyreek was made available on the podium for us to ask whatever we wanted um and then they they made Place Campbell available on the podium even though his contribution to the game I he made an early contribution but was not a huge contribution there are other players they could have made available on the podium other than Tua Hill and McDaniel because they wanted to give Campbell a chance to address it uh that told me something that told me that the Dolphins from the very jump on this the information that they had was that the police who they want to maintain a good relationship with okay again they handle everything outside the stadium dolphins are you know they're essential part of our community okay I mean they're they're still the biggest sports team in town even if they haven't acted like the last 25 years right and I'm just saying that like the way they handled it like they knew from the start what they were going to be getting on the video that was clear and I just I guess it speaks to kind of the polarization here and the difference of perception because the police Union had access to the same video before it was released to the public which again good that they released it or good that the police department released it and yet the statements cannot be more polar opposite from each other right right so I'm just so again I I credit the Dolphins for doing what they did okay trying to tow the line but being open about it and I'll say this too as someone who covers the Heat and I I I respect the way that he do things I don't know that heat would have made the players a bit like if this happened let's say to Jimmy Butler on the way into the arena okay for a game okay and I'm just picking I'm picking an African-American player because we know and I'm not going to argue with this we know I it's more likely to happen to someone who's quote unquote driving well black okay it's just that's just that's just the the nature of the numbers in this country if it happened with Jimmy Butler I don't know that the heat would have made Jimmy available after the game I don't know that they would have handled it quite the same way even though I kind of know where they come down from a political standpoint so I I'm just it was interesting to me Alex that the Dolphins were so sure about this yeah they backed their player from the very beginning on it um and I think the majority of fans from what I saw on Instagram and such seem to appreciate that yes I did as well and you know what I I think until you said what you said I think I kind of took it for granted the fact that they were so open about it they made players available because you're right I mean thinking about it how would that organization have handled it in the past how would others in town have handled it and and yeah I think I I took it for granted because I think it's important to get to get their voices out there uh and to you know explain from from their point of view and obviously not just Tyreek but you know Kus Campbell who who ended up uh you know involved on the scene as well like I I just I I I want to hear and I'm you know I'm glad that the footage came out the body cam footage because I I think we all we all deserve to see as many angles and hear as many perspectives on the situation as possible and you know you're talking about grown men you know if this had like happened in a in a college program I would understand why there'd probably be more hesitance to have players speak on it but when it comes to professional athletes and professional sports teams uh I I think the Dolphins handled it the right way like you said Alice Alice you ra you rais a good point there because I I know you cover a college team do do don't you think if was a college there's so many of these incidents that happen in college and I don't feel like the about I mean Georgia I mean mean they get a player player pulled over every two days at UG and and right and I don't feel that there's quite the openness about it it feels like it kind of like the university just wants it to sort of go away that that would be my sense is that would be the way it's what typically handled in college I know the way um has handled these situations in the past and typically that has been it I I I just was I was taken back in I say in a good way by the fact that they allowed look whether or not you believe them well the video speaks a certain story but even before people saw the video the fact that Tyreek and and c and and Jonah Smith were out there to speak on it I I think again I think that's a sign of maturity from the Dolphins organization now where it goes from here I you know is is a whole another question and and I think whenever we get caught in this thing like Alex I feel like whenever it's the Dolphins the only time that the national news media gets involved is just when it's some you know Flash Point here like I mean we saw it with bullygate I'm trying to think of other situations where you know there was the situation of course with the Chris Forester I mean I feel like I was about to say right like there's been a number of these over the course of time um how would you if you and then we'll get on the other side of this we'll get to what we actually saw in the video but H how would you expect the do they have a short week um they've got Buffalo coming in they' Lost what 11 of 12 or 10 of 11 something like that they don't seem to have a healthy running back right now at least not either of their two primary ones most of the a chain um yeah like how do you expect because there's going to be more media after on just on this situation o over the course of this week uh that has nothing to do with football so how how do you think they handled it well it's interesting because I guess we're we're not really going to know until Thursday rolls around uh because you know I I feel like this situation is now being talked about so much early in the week and having you know the players who were you know involved at the scene already having spoken about it if this is going to be something is this going to linger into Thursday or by the time reporters talk to dolphins players and coaches after the game win or lose against the bills if that's going to be kind of something we've already put behind us and most of the focus is going to be on the football game I I don't know but I also think that again I think that's why it was it was good for the Dolphins to address it in a major way after the game on Sunday so maybe there's not a necessity for as many questions to come out but like you said there's going to be more media at the game Thursday who weren't at this one but you know listen I I think as far as like on the field you know obviously short week and not having full health is tough but I think in in the case of what's going to happen against Buffalo and I know we'll we'll Circle back to the Tyreek thing but you know if you're going to have a short week the data shows it's much better to be the home team on these Thursday night games that I think I think that's going to bode well for the Dolphins on the field because Road teams in Thursday night games the records are piss poor so I'm I'm happy we're on the dolphin side of it for this one well and that makes sense because you really I mean you're talking about a whole day is travel really I mean the preparation time you just don't have it and the entire and then there's all the other things that go into it obviously not sleeping in your own bed etc but I mean again the travel plays into this because you can't I mean you really have like one and a half days of practice um before you can get up there and face team I will say this uh before we go to our sponsor that the fact that it's Buffalo I think for Miami also makes this a little easier because they could essentially prepare for two opponents in training camp they kind they the Jacksonville and buffalo are very different but they've seen Buffalo so many times that I it's not going to be a hard ramp up I know they've changed some Personnel but it's still Josh Allen uh it's still the the same kind of preparation that they need in order to take take away the head of the snake so um I'm sure they've been working on this aldering camp that they had like a two game sample here and then take take a breath okay before the rest of the schedule resumes and look if they can get a two and 0 start in the AFC uh one division game one conference game with two of the teams that are expected to be somewhere On The Fringe of being playoff teams I don't think either team is at the level of we've talked about Baltimore Kansas City um I think Houston may be up there also but like the these two teams are going to be teams that the Dolphins may be fighting for position we obviously know in the division but also possibly in a wild card with Jacksonville so um the fact that uh they could start two and0 would be significant all right we we we'll get more into the incident itself here on the other side of the break because I just want to get uh your thoughts on it uh before we go do want to mention a great appreciate you joining us I mean there was clear escalation like there's no way around I don't know how you could view that video and think that that officer came in to try to diffuse the situation he clearly didn't I mean at the same time I I saw you know Dave Hyde's column today I just got a chance to read it I'm gonna read this from our guy Fresco here um I apologize my pronunciations are awful like Michael I think uh police were trained at limit escalation having high tolerance doesn't matter if Tyreek was right or wrong the be behavior of police neglecting what they trained for which again is is kind of kind of the thing here uh I I I guess what frustrates me a little bit too is just the Social Media stuff like I you know all of a sudden on every Bleacher Report post every ESPN post about this it's Tyreek was going 120 and a 40 like there's no evidence of any of that yeah and I was I was about to ask you if like we actually had like a definitive report on uh on on what what the stop was about and I just want to know like that's not coming from any angle from well I saw the Alex did you see the body Cam that I I who is it was Marcel posted uh from ESPN Marcel I think unor LJ he posted the body cam of the officer on on the motorcycle who when Tyreek passed and again I'm not a speed limited I mean I'm not well I'm not a speeding expert but that didn't look like 120 to me I mean everything I've SE I mean you and I we know that we go to that Stadium all the time like it's not it's not possible on a game day to go 120 on that I drove past it Alex and I I I couldn't say I could go more than 35 like if I'm if I'm going 120 hate to say it but there's a bunch of people going to get injured I mean there's just no no way to do that and again I'm not whatever they stopped him for they I mean he said flat out write me a ticket do what you got to do now again the whole thing about rolling the window up or anything along those lines but I I just to me again there you can both sides this but there was clear escalation like that that that's that's my thing about this it was and from the Second Officer not necessarily the first the second officer came on seemed like he wanted to make a point and it was the wrong point and I think that's why he got put on administrative uh Duty so quickly yeah I mean I I I agree with uh with Fresco's comment about you know you you try you try to make the effort to deescalate as much as possible it looked like the effort was going the opposite way like I I understand the perspective about rolling up the window like when the window is highly tinted like I I understand that you know that that was something that maybe there could be a reasonable concern about but at the same time it's like there there was there was not there was not any deescalation happening there whatsoever like I it's just it's a sad thing to watch um you know I'm very thankful that you know no one no one was injured and and you know uh it didn't it didn't escalate into something that you know could have turned out way worse so I'm I'm thankful about that but yeah this is something that I I hope we can learn from this well this comment comes in from Mark Craven if that had happened to Jimmy Butler a completely different outcome uh Jimmy and the cop would be smiling and shaking hands at the end of the ordal I mean we don't know that I I I don't you know I I again Jimmy Jimmy Butler is a different personality than Tyreek Hill no question about that okay but again if you're coming into a situation with bias of some kind or simply with an attitude of some kind it doesn't matter if the guy's funny or he's a little bit belligerent like I'm saying you know what I'm saying like it they're they're trained to deescalate the officer didn't deescalate he escalated that's to me just what I see on the video you know again we can talk about the tinting and the the original incident and all that kind of stuff but appeared to be an escalation and like I said if the dolphins jump in there right away because they clearly believe that and I will say this it's no small thing that the Dolphins released that statement because I mean we know and I'm not gonna I'm not going to jump on this one way or the other I mean Steve Ross is a big supporter of Donald Trump who has basically said that police should have total immunity so the fact that that statement was put out by the dolphins that cross Steve Ross's desk okay so I'm I'm not making a political statement on this so people don't jump on me I'm just saying Steve Ross had to sign off on that statement he would not have done that if he hadn't seen the video and it was apparent to him that his players were were done wrong here and I know we go back to the whole thing with Kenny Stills a few years ago there was definite tension inside the organization about Still's positions remember like and even to the point where we were talking about like certain music that was being played by Brian Flores which seemed to be to try to get Stills his attention there was all kinds of things that went on during that period of time the fact that the Dolphins came out so quickly raw signs off on this to me I I had a feeling when the body cam came out it was going to look bad for the police like that just I don't think the Dolphins would do that otherwise and and I think that the majority of people seem to support the Dolphins position on this I just wish we could get to a point where we could actually talk about it in a nuanced way or try to regard what our experience is without it being just everybody's up in arms at each other people who are not involved that's what mean it is it is one of the very biggest hot button topics in our culture now like it's it's it's right I don't I don't know if I can say if I can even name an issue like maybe you know abortion which but outside of that I don't know if there's anything that's more hot button than this yeah no hopefully we don't have anything related to that because that's that's a whole another topic and then I know people brought tyre's other people brought tyre's other personal situations into this and my only thing on that is what matters is what happened this day at that time between these people yeah what Tyreek has done in his personal life or how many children he it has nothing to do with this and that that's the other thing that I saw on social media was it it's from from both sides of this it's just you know your own personal biases personal experiences than feeding into it well Tyreek must have been going 120 miles an hour or Tyreek must have been doing this because he did this or he did this and again it's just I'm glad there's video that's that's all I'll say I'm glad there's video and I'm glad that there's video in more of these situations now because um because obviously without it anybody can tell any story that they want all right um Alex I'll get to this we're gonna Thursday we're gonna do a show before the dolphin game but your early thoughts or do you like them going two and0 I do like them going 2 and0 although I thought they got a little lucky against the Jaguars because you know Jacksonville the late fumble the idiotic decision to go for that third down around their own or fourth down around their own 30 yard line where you just knew the momentum was in my like you knew they weren't going to pick up that first down like the Dolphins had a very slow start obviously they came on late and you know Tyreek Hill after after all that went on in the morning he ends up uh he ends up going off for seven receptions 130 yards and an 80 yard touchdown and you thought like Jacksonville was playing him well defensively early in the game but Tyreek is always going to get his uh then the Dolphins were you know and they had to of course make these plays they had to stop them on fourth down they had to force those turnovers so credit to the Dolphins but I thought the Jaguars let him off the hook in that game and I feel a little fortunate to Come Away with the victory after how poorly they started but um again I do think that the Dolphins are they didn't play consistently this past Sunday but I do believe the Dolphins are now a better team than the Buffalo Bills and it's a huge Advantage being the home team on a Thursday night game so yeah I think the Dolphins are going two and 0 yeah I think they're better too I just think they got to take care of the little things not just the big things the big plays for them will come um but you know the the short yardage stuff they did later in the game was more encouraging to me than the 80 yard bomb where Tua looked off waddle and hit Hill like to me I we know I know they can do that stuff yeah can they convert to hard yards uh against these kind of teams and they managed to do that I'm a little concerned about both uh their top running backs being out but this is why and they're not out I don't want to say they're out but being questionable right but the potential that that either or one or either of both could be out but uh this is why they got Jaylen Wright in the draft so we'll see how that works out but we'll talk more about that on Thursday um if you guys have any comments of course you can comment to five reasons Twitter if you like um thanks to Alex thanks for our sponsors prize picks use to code five I I'll tell you what I'll say I'll give it credit I forgot who was in The Press Box who said oh man oh uh it was our guy Al Al Butler he he he looked he says he's going to do a handcuff celebration today isn't he yes if if prize picks had gone over half a handcuff celebration I would have played the over that's all I can say and as it happen like look he's about to do it that was the most predictable thing ever thank you Alex appreciate it thanks Ethan see you guys later
