[Music] [Music] [Music] hey there welcome to uh Chris's Texas Sports podcast I'm Chris by the way today is look at the Steven F Austin Charleston State and Texas A&M Commerce football teams and a look back at a sports in Texas in [Music] 1955 last year the Steven F Aon Lumberjacks Under head coach Kobe Carl took a step back last year as they had an overall record of 3 and n and a winless record in the new United Athletic Conference that was after having an overall record of six and five and winning a share of The Wack championship in 2022 and making the FCS playoffs in 2021 the Jags are going back to the Southland this season coach Carl made a few changes during the off season the first was to split up the recruiting in East Texas among multiple coaches another change was to focus on recruiting high school players that are used to a winning on the highest levels he also made a change at offensive coordinator he parted ways with Matt storm who had coached with him for 12 years and brought in Chris Ross who had been the head coach at several schools in Texas compiling a win loss record of 190 and 82 Jacks have two players who have made the join join for preseason FCS All American team they are riched sh freshman at Edo the third and kicker Chris compos going into last season there were rumors that uh tolton coach Todd won will be on the hot seat even though he's the winningest coach in program history that's that was if the Texans weren't deemed uh to be competitive in the united Athletic Conference the Texans led by quarterback Victor gabalis who had 2,492 yards passing and eight 18 touchdown passes answered with an eight and3 record and and a 4-2 Mark and a second place finish in the UAC but since they were still transitioning from uh D2 to FCS they were ineligible for the FCS playoffs that kind of upset coach wood and the team but it gives some expectations to win the UAC and get the automatic bid for the FCS playoffs the Texans have every starter on offense and seven starters on defense returning there were some changes on the coaching staff uh Adam Austin was moved up to a co- offensive coordinator and a quarterback's coach Scott AR was moved up to a co- offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Memorial Stadium was remodeled in 2019 and expanded again in 2022 raising the capacity to 24,000 the Texans were fourth in attendance in FCS last year averaging 18,6 197 fans a game they remodeled the field house last year they put in a multi-purpose room a nutriti nutrition bar a film room nine offices for the coaches and a barber shop this year the Texans are ped to win the UAC and they're ranked number 21 in the FCS preseason top 25 running back Kavon Britt is on the Walter award watch list and is a preseason FCS allamerican they will play MCN at home to start the season on August 29th and they'll start UAC play at North Alabama on September 26th the Texas A&M Commerce uh Lions uh football team they had a record of one and N with the former Lions quarterback Clint Delle as their new head coach there were changes to the uh coaching staff during the off season with the coach doelle taking over play calling duties for the upcoming season they also LED defensive coordinator Kyle williamss go and they prooved linebackers coach Jack Tyler to defensive coordinator and they also promoted defensive line coach Michael Smith to assistant head coach the Lions recruited 25 players and got 16 play players in the uh transfer portal coach doelle is looking at the Run getting the Run game better this year after they had only uh 1,339 rushing yards and nine touchdowns as a team last year the ls are pick to finish eighth in the Southland while defensive back max EPS is uh one of the top five players in the uh Southland and according to Dave Campbell is Texas football next to look at Sports in Texas in the year [Music] [Music] [Music] 1955 the 1955 TCU horn frogs led by head coach a Martin had a record of 9-2 and won the 1955 Southwest Conference Championship the 1955 abene Christian Wildcats led by head coach Gavin beum had a record of 35 and two but they won a share of the Gulf Coast with a record of 2 and one the 1955 East Texas State Alliance led by head coach Jules V Sykes had a record of 54 And1 and won a share of the Lone Star with a record of 5 and one the 1955 McMurray Indians led by a new head coach Douglas Cox had a record of nine and2 and won the South the Texas conference the 1955 North uh Texas State Eagles led by head coach ois Mitchell had a record of 54 and one and they won a share of the Gulf Coast with a record of two And1 you have reing Christian and uh North Texas won the Gulf Coast even though they're not anywhere near the Gulf Coast the 1955 prie View A&M Panthers led by head coach Billy Nicks beat a Fisk 59 to nothing in the Prairie View Bowl the 1955 Sam Houston State barats led by head coach Paul Pierce had a record of 61 and two and won a sh of the longar with a record of 5 and one the 1955 uh Southwest Texas State Bobcats led by head coach RW Parker had a record of 61 and two and one a Sher the lone star with a record of 5- one the 1955 Texas Tech Red Raiders led by head coach DT Weaver had a record of 73 and one and won the Border conference with a record of 30 And1 that was before they joined the Southwest the Red Raiders went on to lose to Wyoming in the 1955 sunbowl the 1955 D Dallas Eagles the ablea affiliate of the New York Giants finished first in the Texas League with a record of 9367 the 1955 Houston buffalos theaa affiliate of the St Louis Cardinals finished fourth in the Texas League with a record of 86 and 75 The Bu went on to beat the Eagles in six games in the Texas League semifinals and then lost to the shreport sports in seven games in the Texas League Championship they used to have a team in the CBA in which it all falls I'll tell you about that in a minute [Music] there used to be a CB team in the CBA the Continental uh Basketball Association in Texas in the late 80s early 90s they were called The Witch Falls Texans and they played from 1988 to 1994 they played in the DL Lan Coliseum where a lean and they were the
