welcome back to the ryer on YouTube channel Travis ryer with you on a Friday morning September the 6 2024 got some Alabama football to talk on this Friday morning did you catch the Thursday night football you had the NFL opener last night in Kansas City game had a finish right seems like the NFL it's always gonna have a finish regardless of the teams and that was the case how about Derrick Henry in a raven uniform that was a little bit different wasn't it yeah that took a little getting used to but uh Derek scoring the first touchdown of the NFL season so no huge surprise there especially with Lamar Jackson those two working that zone read and that give and take between those two guys kind of like Jaylen milro and those Alabama running backs when you think about the potential for Red Zone success and as we get going here want to welcome you into the program there's Southern red checking in good morning Miss red glad to have you here with us and we certainly encourage each and every one of you to jump into the comments if you would like fire your questions your comments as we get you ready for the Alabama Crimson Tide fourth rank now Alabama Crimson Tide welcoming the Bulls of South Florida from Tampa we'll get into three predictions for this game coming up there's Bob checking in there he is we can always count on Bob here on the program good morning Bob uh we'll do some predictions for the game I'd like to hear your predictions some things maybe that you're looking for your expectations for this game especially on the heels of what we saw a year ago down in Tampa struggling Alabama offense at the time feels like a 180 from that perspective from 2023 Alabama taking on USF to 2024 Alabama taking on what I think will still be an improved South Florida team you I think Alex golish has been perfect for that program as the new head coach secondy year head coach got a Young quarterback that's kind of Tethered to him and Byron Brown did some nice things against Alabama a year ago so we'll get into some of those predictions as we move throughout the show again NFL football cranking up last night you got a Full Slate you got you got South American NFL football tonight what is that the Packers taking on Jaylen Herz and the Philadelphia Eagles Devonte Smith uh certainly the Alabama ties are there Ravens used to be really deep with the Alabama guys and there's still some there I think Jaylen armor Davis is still Baltimore is Eddie Jackson in Baltimore now the former Alabama standout defensive back of course Marlon Humphrey uh in that situation as well to go along with Derrick Henry so still some representation up there in Baltimore but you'll see more of that with Philadelphia tonight uh Josh Jacobs now right member of the Green Bay Packers so look forward to that as well but again we're going to get into the weekend coming up for Alabama football and gonna kind of start off with the naming of the Sabin field there at Bryant Denny Stadium Sabin field at Bryant Denny Stadium G to be christened at the Capstone coming up tomorrow really a dayong series of events as it should be and you know I'm thinking about notable fields in courts and sports history you think about Lambo field of the aforementioned Green Bay Packers you got Bobby bowfield now at dope Campbell Stadium down at uh Florida wof rough start for the seminal huh 0 and two you've got Steve Spurrier Florida field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at the University Florida Coach K court at Duke the summit named after the late great Pat Summit up there at Tennessee Lady V's basketball you got Nolan Richardson court at Bud Walton Arena in fville Shields Watkins field at nean Stadium uh Davis Wade Stadium has scotfield and of course maybe as popular or renowned of a field as there is Wrigley Field right if you're talking baseball there's no no doubt about that something else I was thinking about as well Lisa checking in here good to see you good to hear from you Lisa here on the ryer on YouTube channel and by the way if you haven't subscribed to the channel as of yet do us a favor go ahead and hit that subscribe button right now there's a notification Bell that you're looking at perhaps too hit that so you're alerted to all of our content here on the channel as it drops and of course if you did us with a like a thumbs up for the show any of our shows that would help us out tremendously also but you know also thinking about Nick Sabin and Sabin field which I like because it implies the family name and we know Terry Sabin as big a part of that team Dynamic with Nick Sabin as you as it gets in athletics when you talk about husband wife tandems and how collectively their impact has been on not just a particular brand like the Alabama Crimson Tide but really synonymous in the last 15 or 20 years with college football in general so that's very very appropriate uh but what about LSU I mean shouldn't the saing name be on something at LSU you know Nick sabin's a Louisiana state Hall of Famer now put it this way does LSU win three national titles since 203 without Nick Sabin going in there initially in 1999 if Nick Sabin doesn't go into Baton Rouge and sort of wake up that situation are there really going to be three national titles in the last 20 years or so I don't know maybe you can put the you they got the lake you ever been to the LSU campus you know the lake I'm talking about there's kind of a lake right there at the entrance maybe it's a byou maybe it's actually you know and they get upset about that because there is a difference for those folks folks where and I get it buy you Lake although there is a Lake Charles Lake Charles Louisiana little Bessie girl I once knew how about a little band reference for you little uh Creek reference for you to get you going on a Friday morning uh you got Lake ponet train but um caught a lot of red fish out of there by the way that's always a good trip if you're ever in that Jean lefit area uh south of New Orleans look up roas Charters that's unsolicited that's an unsolicited tip for you if if you like the uh the red fishing with roas they're outstanding folks but yeah I mean think about it maybe put him on the lake there maybe maybe you put the Sabin name on one of the sauces at canes you know maybe it's the Sabin sweet chili sauce or something for canes uh something like that but in all seriousness it's not just the impact at Alabama with Nick Sabin it's certainly the impact at LSU uh I think timing obviously a big big thing in all of this with sabin's career it worked out perfectly for Alabama as we know now in retrospect because if it had been the other way around let's say Nick Sabin is the hire after um after Mike dubos kind of in that time frame it's about a year later I guess um that that happened with going from dubos to Fran uh and LSU going from Jerry dardo to Nick Sabin but if Nick Sabin replaces let's say dubos there in that same time frame does he still go to the NFL I think it's possible I think it's an itch he had to scratch at some point so what was really really really good for LSU still in retrospect uh it isn't his legacy it didn't Divine his legacy but again when you think about the impact he made in t in terms of foundational work that he did in terms of the standard that he implemented at LSU I think it's safe to say the residual effect was massive So speaking of Nick Sabin and Sabin field going into effect uh tomorrow you know it wasn't exactly one of his final team's more memorable performances last season when the Crimson Tide went down to Tampa so an opportunity for this team to put that one further in the rearview mirror courtesy of uh you know well deserved honor to to go to Nick Sabin with the field naming and with that we get on to the predictions and first up what we'll talk about USF in the game a year ago rushed for 177 yards that was kind of covered up in the dysfunctionality of the Alabama offense going into that game and through that game you know between the two of them Byron Brown the quarterback and nayquan Wright the running back the Florida transfer nayquan Wright they combined a rush for 150 4 yards in that game um goish he likes the tempo you know comes from Tennessee comes from that Josh hyle situation so South Florida actually got off 74 plays on offense now 3.6 per play that's not exactly knocking the doors down but it was enough for South Florida to kind of control things just enough to stay in that game late into the fourth quarter Byron Brown in the game a year ago threw 28 passes for just 87 yards that's 3.1 yards per attempt so Tempo is going to be a continuation for this Alabama defense from a week ago you saw it from Western Kentucky where South Florida is concerned you're gonna get some early Tennessee prep because of the golish and hypo ties you're going to see those two by two wide receiver or two by two sets with the wide splits and with the tempo so you're going to get more of that than you are let's say coming up at Wisconsin and then certainly with Georgia down the road as well I think some key pieces for the Alabama defense this week it still goes right up the middle because first and foremost USF again has to run the ball with some level of Effectiveness to stay in this game to try to control things not only on the offensive side but to help that defense as well Tim Keenan Deontay Lawson you know Deonte I think a year ago against USF 10 tackles yeah tackle and a half for loss and a sack Jihad Campbell coming off an outstanding week against Western Kentucky I think even Justin Jefferson you move into that situation as well you've got some you've got some perimeter Defenders that I think are still going to be on the clock this week when you look at dman Jackson and Devonte Smith at the Husky and it'll be interesting will we see the heavy rotation once again at at corner uh especially where zav and brown is concerned and Jaylen and bway and you know Z miny and the rest of those guys desan Jones so you know as far as pass rush a year ago against this USF offense the tackles for South Florida had some struggles now that was Dallas Turner and Chris brazwell bringing it off the edge and they certainly took advantage of that so now becomes the question can Quay rousa can Jihad Campbell when he's put in that situational role like we saw a week ago against Western Kentucky Q Robinson too when it's third and long can they do the same thing against this returning Duo of South Florida tackles all that being said it will start with slowing down Brown and wri in the Run game if you can get Byron Brown up to the high 20s low 30s and pass attempts I think you're going to feel really good about what you've been able to do against that South Florida Run game up next another prediction for Alabama on on Saturday night Crimson Tide I'm going to go out on a limb here right the Crimson Tide will pass for more than 107 yards that was the passing yardage total from Tampa a year ago and that was with obviously Jaylen Miler watching from the sideline you had Tyler Buckner you had Ty Simpson those two quarterbacks combined to complete just 10 of 23 passes now as we know Tai was the highlight he completed five of nine for 73 yards he was also sacked five times in the game and you were still dealing with some issues with that um you know the situation in the interior offensive line some of those things you know in that game a year ago Alabama didn't have a receiver with more than one catch didn't have a receiver with multiple catches in the game and you look at Alabama's debut under Kaylin deor last week Alabama just attempted 18 passes I would have gone way over that I would have lost everything if You' have said Travis we're going to set the the total for pass attempts for Alabama in kayin dore's first game as head coach at 18 and a half I would have I would have lost it all to go over 18 and a half but you know of the 12 combined completions that Jaylen and Ty had last week half of them covered 15 yards or more and you had the two of 55 or more to Ryan Williams so thinking maybe more Jeremy Bernard this week and perhaps more Kendrick law did really need him Bernard only had one catch last week it was a beauty of a Corner route that Jaylen put on the money to him as you might recall those two guys Bernard and law combined three targets last week against Western Kentucky those targets brought back two catches for 39 yards and you had the touchdown by Kendrick law and the sort of deferred checkdown from Jaylen out into the left flat to Kendrick early in that game last Saturday night what about the left tackle position as it relates to all this in the passing game for Alabama uh we've heard from kayin deor a couple times in regards to the status of Kaden Proctor the starting left tackle what are your expectations it sounds like based on really the hate coach comments from kayn a couple of nights ago when he referred to it as more day to day which is what you want to hear if you're an Alabama fan week to week that that's pretty vague you know that that goes perhaps deeper into the month maybe even into October this does sound like it's more of a short-term issue and if it is a short-term issue my thing would be to just roll with Elijah to pritet you know if you're thinking you don't want to press it with Kaden this week but you think he'll certainly be capable of going on the road at wiconsin next week um then yeah the the concern you had there is that Kaden's not really gonna have game action uh since last season and that didn't exactly end well for him or Al Alabama uh he played okay but you'd like to get him ready I think a little bit if you could obviously before you take it on the road and what should be a pretty rockus environment next week at uh Camp Randall but if you're thinking it is short term I like the idea just going with Elijah pritchet I know there's been talk about maybe Tyler Booker you kick him out the left tackle and come with Gino vandemark at guard perhaps I'm not a fan of breaking up a real strength of your football team if we're just talking another game or even two now if it's more along the lines of three or four games with the thought being given to that Wisconsin game or maybe even Georgia down the road then hey I get it get your best five on the field and go ahead and rep those guys up maybe you look at it as an opportunity to rep Booker at tackle in case even Beyond Georgia and get into October in November that you need him perhaps over an extended stretch at a tackle position based on your depth currently but based on what we've heard from dor anyway it doesn't sound like it's something that should keep Proctor out of the lineup for an extended stretch so I'd be surprised if we didn't see him back before the end of the month when you're talking about Kaden Proctor finally third and final prediction I've got for you here Alabama will more than double its Point output from a year ago in Tampa another one right don't don't get too far out on that limb uh seeing as how the total you see the line there uh in the caption for the program Alabama by 30 and a half seeing as how the total sits at 63 and a half I don't think over 17 in the first quarter isn't all that of an unsafe bet for this Alabama offense I think it's very safe to assume that in year two again under Alex golish USF is gonna be a better team than the one Alabama saw even a year ago now I'm not sure Alabama at this point is a better overall team than it was a year ago but it's certainly in a better mental space than it was coming off that home loss to Texas a year ago it's certainly Alabama is more functional on offense than it was a year ago and even in a transition year under a new staff that side of the football has a far better idea of who it is and also who it is at the pieces around the quarterback position so much better place for this Alabama off defense going into this one and you know given what happened a year ago even though it was a win it was like a moral defeat if that's if that's a thing we've heard so much about moral victories that was like a moral defeat in Tampa for Alabama you know this shouldn't be an Alabama team with an emphasis on the quarterback position that goes into this game less than fully engaged so again while USF is improved and likely to make some noise in its conference it is far less likely to find itself in a one-score game in my opinion with the Crimson Tide late in the fourth quarter and you got to take availability into account both ways not just from the Alabama perspective we talk about Kaden Proctor but for South Florida it's star linebacker Jaylen Schuler had 11 tackles against Alabama a year ago in Tampa knee injury at the end of an interception last week in the Bulls season opening win over bethon cookman the good news for us is that it isn't an ACL it isn't something that's going to cost him the remainder of the season but we did hear from Alex goish earlier in the week and he did rule Jaylen Schuler out for this game against the Alabama Crimson side so there you go there's your three predictions South Florida Alabama Saturday night 6 PM under the lights at Sabin
