A northern New England state is now urging people in some areas to simply stay inside to avoid the spread of the triple E virus. Health officials in Vermont put out that warning specifically for people in high risk areas that are near water. According to the Department of Health, there, most people are asymptomatic but for the few that aren't Tripoli or eastern equine encephalitis could be deadly. The disease is carried by mosquitoes, mostly impacting horses and other farm animals. So far in 2024 it's been found in 47 groups of mosquitoes across 11 towns in Vermont. It's not unique to Vermont. Of course, just last week, a man from New Hampshire died after contracting the virus, less than 5% go on to develop severe illness that involves their nervous system. And that severe illness form is fatal about a third of the time in people who have that severe form of triple E infection. So, some precautions include wearing long pants and long sleeves, using mosquito repellent and people in those high risk areas to simply stay inside from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
