And a man that ran for Idaho governor in 2014 is on trial for murder again. Steve Pankey is accused of killing Janelle Matthews in Colorado, and today opening statements in his second trial started. A jury convicted Pankey of false reporting last year, but jurors couldn't agree on whether he killed Janelle Matthews, so it led to a mistrial. Janelle was last seen alive on December 20th in 1984. Her body was finally found in 2019, now in October. Of 2022, a second trial is just getting started, and once again Steve Pinky was back in court listening on headphones. Today, Weld County DA Michael Rourke laid out his case. First, the DA argues Pinky is guilty based on things he said and how he's acted over the years. The DA says Pinky wasn't even a blip on the radar of Greenlee police until he called them out of the blue. It was only days after Janelle Matthews disappeared and Pinky wanted to trade information on the case pinkies. Attorneys had his turn to respond and called attention to the evidence that's missing. Things like fingerprints, a murder weapon and witnesses. Here's the DA and Pinky's attorney talking this morning. No one knew who he was. And yet, as you see here in the course of this trial, it's almost as if over the course of time. The Senate walks up to the shoulder of law enforcement, taps him on the shoulder and says, here I am. Come get hard and fast evidence in this case. It's not there. Because Steve did not do this. The trial will continue next week as the first witnesses take the stand. The previous trial lasted 22 days and jurors deliberated for two days. Pankey also testified in his first trial. We'll see if he decides to take the stand again. He's expected back in that courtroom at 8:30 on Monday morning.
