it's great uh Simone Sanders Townsen joins us Simone uh what did you think of the debate I I too um I know Jen cited the the handshake moment and I thought that that was that was great because it showed that she was in command and not scared right that she is not afraid of engaging and it it I think it put Donald Trump back on his heels he was kind of like oh what's What's Happening Here how you doing um so I thought that was a good moment and then she very I think just with masterfully ensured that the footing on the economy was strong MH and that she was very clear in her own words what it is she is going to do what she believes Donald Trump's plan means for the American people and then at every single turn throughout this debate she baited him and he took it like even on the like mentioned Wharton we all know he went to Wharton he's like I went to Wharton yes but why are you weighing in like I feel for the debate prep team that prepped Donald Trump because I I just I just know as a as a just as a former strategist I know that's not what they encouraged him to go up on that stage and do in any sense of the word the back and forth with David M on like shouting him down about the the pet the dogs and the cats I was I was literally flabbergasted and so was vice president Harris that moment the back and forth of David M about that cat eating dog eating thing can I just say that the way that landed was Donald Trump made this false claim David M said we've looked into this we've checked with local authorities it didn't happen and then Trump's response was but I saw it on television and then David M is like and I got this from the city manager I don't know why you saw on television but that's actually it was it was not just him saying something wrong and getting called out not I going to say it was him admitting that if he sees a thing on television that counts as true to him it was daughter and Grandpa moment it was really really really negative in terms of the way he's if he's trying to present himself as a commanding presence was just as bad as when Muer followed up with him and again so back and forth of Muer and said so do you have oh excuse me it was the other it was the other moderator who followed up with them and said do you do you have a plan on Obamacare but wait you didn't answer he said I've got concepts of plans what if vice president Harris would have given that answer tonight about anything if she just had a concept and didn't have a plan she would be being eviscerated on the front page of the New York Times tomorrow so I look forward to seeing the coverage yeah because Donald Trump does needs to be covered just as rigorously as vice president Harris has been covered I thought she gave very folsome clear answ she also weaved her personal narrative in with the policy in with the contrast and she responded to the things that she needed to respond to and left the other things at the Wayside and gave the good facials where they mattered she found moments to turn to the camera and speak to the people at home and there are many clippable moments from that that I would hope would be turned into ads from the campaign's perspective because the I'm sure a lot of people watch will get the numbers but everybody didn't and people need to be reminded from this debate what happened on the stage because it may be the only one we just saw live images there of Vice President Harris and the second gentleman leaving Philadelphia heading to New York they'll be in New York tomorrow for uh 9911 commemoration commemorations Donald Trump did more than take the bait tonight what happened was she beat him at the business of television and the reason this is so important is that's what he's actually good at right so when he lied and said no I didn't inherit $400 million of a real estate Fortune from my father that's a lie he did he inherited it and then he squandered it right he went bankrupt six times but where he actually became a business success and a political success is because he's a great Entertainer because he knows how to entertain a room and he failed over and over there was that moment when they were going back and forth about the economy which is a complicated one right and he said you know the tariffs matter because during covid we saw that we didn't manufacture any chips here so we need those tariffs and she looked right at them and said yeah that's why we instilled the chips act $ 53 billion to manufacture them here and I'll just say during the debate I talked to a number of Republicans I I spoke to some former uh cat you know admin members of Trump's Administration who said well I I still don't know her policies and I said how and he said I'm just hearing handouts you know a little bit in housing a little bit in small business child tax credit those are handouts well then what's cutting corporate taxes right they're both stimulus for different groups of people and it goes right back to Simone's points she didn't give enough detail yet Donald Trump who was a president for four years and now is running said I've got Concepts to replace Obamacare and the last thing I would say the other thing I heard from Republicans over and over the one line the moderators well they didn't like Donald Trump they only like comma Harris really well she he got an additional five minutes he spoke for five minutes longer 5 minutes longer he spoke 39 times to her 23 times and where she was so masterful she didn't scream and shout because she can't because she's a woman because she's a black woman because if she got outraged in any way she'd get it for that and and she laid it out and she was masterful in how this whole night went and you know it because when he went to the spin room he said yeah she wants a rematch because she knows she lost come on now I think politically we'll we'll see what the voters say and what everyone thought but you you get a larger takeaway and here it was that she answered questions gave it as good as she got it without ever going over the line which he did and he often didn't answer questions and lied now some of his fans and some casual viewers may not catch every lie that is the thing about his lies but you got the overall impression over time that she was giving answers and you didn't have to be listening that closely to notice oh abortion is big issue does he support a National Abortion ban like his running mate he won't say it's in 2 and he said I haven't talked to JD about that oh he said I would sign it or I wouldn't sign it I don't know we haven't talked about that that great nice showing strength there yeah so I thought that takeaway and the mood or the energy people end with was definitely in her favor even after his lies and the fact that he had more debate experience yeah let's going to take we're going to take one more quick break when we come back as promised we're going to check in with Jacob soov with those undecided voters he watched the debate with in Arizona in Phoenix tonight we got a lot to get to this was a really really really big night stay with us as it relates to my values let me tell you I grew up a middle class kid raised by a hardworking mother who worked and saved and was able to buy our first home when I was a teenag the values I bring to the importance of home ownership knowing not everybody got handed $400 million on a silver platter and then filed bankruptcy six times Putin's agenda is is not just about Ukraine understand why the European allies and our NATO allies are so thankful that you are no longer president and that we understand the importance of the greatest military Alliance the world has ever known which is NATO and what we have done to preserve the ability of zalinski and the ukrainians to fight for their independence otherwise Putin would be sitting in keev with his eyes on the rest of Europe starting with Poland and why don't you tell the 800,000 polish Americans right here in Pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch wow I just saw that live a few minutes ago but seeing it a second time ah thank you for being with us as we digest tonight's barn burner of a presidential debate between vice president Harris and former president Donald Trump it was a very lopsided debate as it turns out we all knew the stakes tonight were almost unimaginably high we all knew this would be a debate like no other in a presidential race like no other uh but now we know how it went and why the Harris campaign is so pleased with how it went I'll tell you something he's going to talk about immigration a lot tonight even when it's not the subject that is being raised and I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies cuz it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you you will not hear him talk about your needs your dreams and your need and your desires and I'll tell you I believe you deserve a president who actually puts you first and I pledge to you that I will let me respond us to the rallies she said people start leaving people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go and the people that do go she's busing them in and paying them to be there and then showing them in a different light so she can't talk about that people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics sore spot perhaps repeatedly tonight kamla Harris managed both to make her case about what she would do as president and why Americans should vote for her while also just baiting Donald Trump into almost spitting mad defensiveness Donald Trump appeared increasingly agitated and angry uh he shouted and interrupted while vice president Harris seemed to stay calm and focused she repeatedly managed to steer the discussion back to the points that she wanted to make Donald Trump repeatedly got lost in tangents and self interruptions things like Marxism and windmills and solar panels in the desert soil desert soil and imaginary people eating dogs and why he believes it's true despite it being debunked because he saw it on television and well who can argue with that the contrast between the candidates was particularly Stark on the topic of abortion as we knew it would be uh former president Trump tried to claim that everyone including all Democrats all Americans were desperate for R versus way to be overturned and so people love him for getting it done he is that's his script and he's sticking to it um here was vice president Harris's response in over 20 states there are Trump abortion bans which make it criminal for for a doctor or nurse to provide Health Care in one state it provides prison for life Trump abortion bans that make no exception even for rape and incest which understand what that means a survivor of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body next that is immoral and one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body notably Donald Trump tonight repeatedly refused to say if he would sign or veto a National Abortion ban if it came to his desk he also notably repeatedly refused to say whether he thought it would be good for Ukraine to win the war against Russia and when he asked if he has a health care plan to replace Obamacare which he said he wants to repeal Trump said that he has a quote he has quote concepts of a plan none of us knows right now whether this debate will have any effect on this incredibly close presidential race but if the goal of the Harris campaign tonight was for kamla Harris to make the case for herself and to needle Donald Trump into being the worst version of himself on television it seems clear that they feel they accomplish that goal tonight let's go back to swing state Arizona where our own Jacob over off just watched tonight's debate uh with a group of Voters who we met before it all kicked off I'm sort of desperate Jacob to know what everybody thought of it Rachel it it really is um a profound privilege to get to do this and spend time with folks uh like the people in this room that I did get to watch the debate with uh tonight and I have to say that nobody watched this debate uh coming out of it uh who said uh who wasn't coming in voting for Trump or thinking about voting for Trump that I'm now going to lean for Trump uh there are multiple people this group who are now either going to participate on behalf of Vice President Harris or are now leaning Harris uh one thing I want to say is it's still 97 degrees in Phoenix Arizona it's 900 p.m 100 days as Chris Hayes said over 100 degrees there was uh I think fair to say um people were happy that climate change came up at the end of debate but I do want to start with Denise who um I got messages from folks asking about Denise saying she wrote herself in in 2016 and 20120 how could you think about doing that again most interestingly to me is that you may not be doing that any longer and in particular I watched you um get what I think it would be fair to say um deeply emotional feel free to contradict me during the portion of the debate about Reproductive Rights um and what vice president Harris had to say about that why well for years we've had men men legislators tell us we can't have abortions we have to do this with our bodies we have to do that with our bodies we've never had control and finally we have someone who's a woman who gets that it's about us and abortion has been in our society and been around much longer than roie Wade and roie Wade protected women of childbearing years from the charlatans and the hacks and the the people who were just not doing right by them and so the door is now open it feels like a connection has been formed between you and vice president Harris it wasn't there before tonight oh absolutely and again I would like to know more and as we were talking before here's you know Trump who's been campaigning this long long time and now Harris is finally thrust in the spotlight so it sound of sort of like the parliamentary system versus an American System of campaigning so I would like to know more but it made an impact clearly clearly made Denise thank you very much Julian let me start um with you on the issue of the economy because we talked before the debate about how you could very well be one month away these are your words not mine from homelessness based on jobs and um affordability here um when when vice president Harris said and I want to make sure I get this right Donald Trump has no plan for you speak into the economy you were talking about how before politicians don't have a connection to you you didn't feel that way you feel like what Vice president Harris was talking about maybe in that moment spoke to you yeah well I feel like Donald Trump like speaking for example since he's the other candidate um I feel like he doesn't care about me and my issues um but I feel like camela Harris does and she's she said like she's for the middle class she was considered middle class when she was growing up that's right she said that right off the H yeah and uh with you huh yeah and also she um uh uh it sounds like to me like small businesses was what she also talked about she made an impact on you tonight all right julan thank you very much I'm going to come over here and talk to Bonnie 30-year Elementary School teacher um Bonnie there was a lot I think I saw I mean I saw you roll in your eyes when uh former president Trump uh was talking about um vice president Harris's PL and said you know basically Run Spot Run he was mocking her uh making a joke about a children's book one that you probably know well but it was it's about the war in Ukraine and former president Trump's refusal to say that he wanted Ukraine to win that seemed to bother you at least at one of the most times during this debate I would say I was disappointed at the fact that he didn't give a direct answer to that I mean you're either for a country and its ideals or you're not and I was frankly surprised surprised that he didn't give a direct answer as to whether he was supporting Ukraine or not you're another one of the folks here who has said to me in between the debate and now that the door is now open for you to vote for vice president Harris what else would you like to see from her I would like to see more off-the-cuff type of uh interviews and answering questions that aren't practiced or uh set up ahead of time well it's been an abbreviated campaign we got a couple months left I think you're we going to get that well I hope I hope to hear more from her Bonnie thank you very much all right let's go to Jeff who um Jeff remember everybody was after the last debate Trump hell no Biden oh no um the the door is now open to you as well for vice president Harris you were saying to me um that the portion of the debate about January 6th by the way we're in Maricopa County one of the SEC uh centers of election denialism at least the debate around it local elections here are hotly contested about literally election administrators who have denied not only the results of the 2020 election but continued to deny the results of the 2020 midterms um about the Integrity of the system here going into 2024 what bothered you so much about former president Trump you say you're a McCain Republican saying he had no regrets about January 6th that's uh really hard to get my head around because you know he's saying I didn't do anything except give a speech but actually what he was doing is orchestrating how the whole situation was playing out he told the Secret Service guys to take the metal detectors out and let people just come in un reviewed uninspected I mean that's a terrible thing to do but there were a lot of other things going on for 2 and a half hours when he's prancing around in the white house um and it just seemed like he how can you not take responsibility at some point for for the whole thing I mean I didn't see any other banners up there except Trump banners so I think it was a pretty much heavily skewed group in favor of trump you didn't believe him with what he had to say today no but because Liars don't cheat cheaters don't lie wait I said that wrong cheaters cheaters don't win and winners don't cheat uh how did VI what type of impression did Vice President Harris make on you tonight as a McCain Republican with members of the McCain family now endorsing vice president Harris Bobby McCain came in and said it would be a disaster for the country if uh Trump got back into office and his brother did too and so it's just I mean I think there's a clear line that there are people who understand the importance of this election and there's people who want to just play you know keyboard Warriors and making a fuss and and really saying heinous things about other people and so that's Trump bully and I think KLA Harris came out showing some decorum and some presidential uh nature about her so I think we're the door is a little bit open Jeff thank you I really appreciate it Nicole um on policy I think um it's accurate to say you may never vote for vice president Harris based on uh the policies that she has has but it also sounds like this debate cemented for you that you will never vote for former president Trump at least again is that right yeah I mean I I think that people want to separate um policy from character and I just don't see how you can do that I can't get behind somebody who maybe I agree with certain policies on but their character is atrocious and lacks complete leadership okay Nicole thank you very much Juan Carlos we were talking about before um the debate about how you didn't like you were leaning Trump but you didn't like his rhetoric towards um immigrants we heard here again these unfounded claims about I mean it's it's almost it's hard to even say them about people stealing and eating animals in Ohio um we know that's not true but he repeated it anyways he talked about rapists and murderers and insane asylum and people coming across the border did it bother you certain things did bother me but I'm still holding on like even though he said that we still have to have a controlled border a secure border because yeah we've had a lot of people going through the Border legally my family went through a long process to get here legally so I feel that it's unfair for hundreds of thousands to get here without problems and then for the Federal Government Federal Government to help them out we've also lost Americans because how many illegals were are ling in like the young boy from Ohio who had killed by illegal immigrants or the college students talk about Aiden Clark I should say aen Clark this is a you know a touchy subject but Aiden Clark's family said that they didn't like the Trump campaign especially JD Vance talking about Eden Clark in the context of the campaign and they don't want it to I'm paraphrasing here um affect migrants in a negative way yeah not not going like that but I'm saying if that guy wasn't allowed here illegally you know we would still have have a lot of people here with us and what about the Border bill vice president Harris made a a a specific um focus of pointing out how former president Trump killed that border Bill one of the most conservative actually in the history of the United States uh basically for political reasons he didn't deny that does that bother you caring so much about about the Border yeah that did bother me but it's like we don't have the best options right now and we haven't had the best options for a good few years so this election for me being a first time voter it feels like either you vote for like an okayish candidate or like a less okay candidate because I I can go with Trump that because I'm more conservative but I can still attack him for like some parts that go against what he preaches okay all right one carers thank you very much and uh Romeo let's uh let's end with you here you went Biden 2020 you were leaning Trump um is it correct to say that the door is now open again for Harris did you say that coming out of the debate yeah I will say after this debate she's definitely piqued my interest but I'm still you know leaning towards Trump and uh he didn't surprise me in any way today so he's still on on the path I expected what is it about vice president Harris that P your interest what do you want to know more about her and and if you were to go over to her coming in like Juan Carlos as a as a potential Trump voter um what could be the deciding factor um I think with uh with Harris there's just a lot of question marks Mar entering this debate you know I didn't really know a lot about her other than she served as vice president and today unfortunately she didn't get to talk about a lot of her policy and so I need to step away from this now that she's peed my interest to kind of do my own research and look on her website I would I think that that's probably exactly what they want to hear as well from from a voter like you before we go um just a show of hands um coming into this debate the two of you were leaning Trump are you going to vote for Trump sounds like you're not so let me just do like this Trump raise your hand if you're sure you're going to vote for Trump raise your hand sure is a strong word if I had to vote now right now today I'd vote for Trump okay same thing here yeah okay Harris if you had to vote today raise your hand and you just want to know more Bonnie I want to know more and Nicole's not going to vote for either I I can't right now okay all right thank you all very much um Rachel thank you also to 12 news in Phoenix for hosting us in here on this sweltering hot night but also just so interesting to see that a group of people who were largely undecided or non-committal um the door has been far more open uh to vice president Harris after this debate than to former president Trump that is for sure uh and again thanks to all of you um for the privilege of being able to hang out with you guys Rachel back to you well please tell everybody there that we're so grateful to them to being willing to talk to be there with you uh but also to talk us through it it's in absolutely invaluable and uh like I said as far as I'm concerned it they they all passed the audition for being on local news for sure I'll let them know thanel thank you NBC's Jacob sober off in Phoenix fascinating to see the transition in so many of those undecided voters in Arizona um over the course of this debate that positive impression of um vice president Harris's performance seems to be matched in a lot of the snap polling that's happening for what that's worth uh certainly matched by the impression here in our studios here at MSNBC um in terms of the relative performance of these two candidates the Harris campaign has to be absolutely ecstatic with their per perance of their candidate tonight um the Trump campaign we'll see our coverage of tonight's presidential debate continues right after this uh here as we go out this is uh vice president Harris uh making her case for as she put it turning the page I was at the capital on January 6th I was the vice president elect I was also an acting Senator I was there and on that day the president of the United States incited a violent mob to attack our nation's capital to desecrate our nation's capital on that day 140 law enforcement officers were injured and some died and understand the former president has been indicted and impeached for exactly that reason but this is not an isolated situation let's remember Charlottesville where there was a mob of people caring weing TIY torches spewing anti-semitic hate and what did the president then at the time say there were fine people on each side let's remember that when it came to the proud boys a militi the president said the former president said stand back and stand by so for everyone watching who remembers what January 6th was I say we don't have to go back let's not go back we're not going back it's time to turn the page and if that was a bridge too far for you well there is a place in our campaign for [Music] you I'm janaki picking up msnbc's special coverage of tonight's presidential debate this was of course as you all know the first vice presidential debate or the first presidential debate K Harris and Donald Trump have ever done together it was the first time they ever met let alone debated and for the very from the very first moments when the vice president went straight in for a handshake that was a decision by the way that Donald Trump clearly had no interest in she pretty much controlled the debate from then on she bookended the debate with her case for what she would do for working people that was smart she delivered a masterpiece of an answer on abortion rights we'll play that for you you guys a little bit later she made Trump look small over and over and over again and really what we all just watched was a well prepared and pretty Fierce at many moments KL Harris Prosecuting the case against Trump and talking directly to the American people about things they care about like issues like abortion rights the economy democracy itself and on the other side we saw pretty grumpy and completely unhinged at moments Donald Trump ranting and raving and lying about crowd sizes and people eating their cats that definitely truly happened during the debate we clearly have a lot we're going to talk about we're going to get into we're going to play a lot of sound throughout the course of the next uh hour and 40 minutes here and I have the perfect people standing by to talk about it all with but I want to start with a moment when Harris really got under Trump's skin I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies because it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talked about fictional characters like cannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you you will not hear him talk about your needs your dreams and your need and your desires and I'll tell you I believe you deserve a president who actually puts you first and I pledge to you that I will let me respond this to the Ries she said people start leaving people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go and the people that do go she's busting them in and paying them to be there and then showing them in a different light so she can't talk about that people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics who knew he would be baited and triggered by a discussion of crowd size who knew who knew um from there things only got better for KL Harris and worse for Donald Trump and one person who looked at this debate and decided they had seen enough was Taylor Swift yes that one who in a lengthy and impassioned Instagram post tonight to her 283 million followers endorsed kamla Harris for president and yes she did it with a cat photo who doesn't love that joining me here at the table are my friends Ari melbour and Vanity Fair special correspondent Molly Jung fast and former RNC chairman Michael steel and joining us from Philadelphia are more friends Alex Wagner who's been in that spin room for 17 hours approximately and host of The Bull workk podcast Tim Miller okay guys um you Warriors in Philadelphia I'm going to start with you Alex you before the debate you pointed out that there was not really um an ambitious plan by the Trump team to have a lot of people in the spin room uh they had a less impressive lineup shall we say Trump then came himself um so there's that uh talk to us a little bit about what that scene was like and what else you observed kind of in the moments after the debate yeah I mean I think I referred to it as the murderer's row sarcastically when we got the Trump lineup of spinners it's like you know RFK Jr Vic ramaswami Tulsi gabard Matt Gates and then on the Harris side like three governors three Senators four Congress people a gold star father Etc um I think it's really telling that Trump came to the spin room after this right to some degree there had been some rumors that he might come um but the US secret service has a pretty stringent as you know Jen screening process for people and this is a person who just had an assassination attempt on his life uh and the screening process for getting into this room was not very stringent I was telling Governor Nome that I got a large Philadelphia hogy through security wrapped in a brown paper bag so you know whatever take that as as you will um I'm not sure you know whether it was set before the debate that he would come in but he certainly felt like it was one of those situations where was I alone can fix it as in I alone can maybe fix the debacle that was the debate um the minute Trump came in it was like a swarm a Feeding Frenzy like you haven't seen with a questions that I don't think are typical of these rooms um for example uh questions about whether people are in fact eating dogs and cats you know um more crowd siiz questions just um the questions themselves were reflection of how badly I think Trump bungled this and made this about his own incoherence and rage and ineptitude at making a case to the American public but you know nobody was more excited to be sort of watching the chaos unfold than the gentleman sitting next to me Tim Miller who is literally getting into arguments with people off camera about you know their values now Tim I'll hand the mic to you Tim as as a follower of your Twitter account I know what she's talking about because you've been wandering around asking Republicans in the room some questions and what including I think lindsy Graham who have you been talking to and what have they been saying I have uh I was one man that didn't answer my questions was the former president I kept shouting at him why wouldn't you look at the vice president why wouldn't you look at her kind of like you could tell he was hearing the question and looking for a more friendly Turf but uh cuz he wouldn't look at her he was flustered the whole night and you could see his on his face the anger like if you didn't if you just watched the debate muted you could tell who is having the better night you he had he had his makeup on and this kind of neck hole was pulsing it's a very strange look for him tonight so I I I asked several of the his surrogates like what they thought and the number one question I asked them was what did you think his best answer was tonight uh none of them could come up with anything uh uh you know David bosi was like you really put me on the spot there with that one give me a minute and then he came up with nothing thing and then I saw my old friend lindsy Graham uh you know we used to be Pals in 2016 when he was a jeev endorser and um we had we had a pretty heated exchange I will have to say um uh where uh he said I should be ashamed of myself and the feeling was kind of mutual but after after our argument about the State of Affairs of politics um you know when when we calmed down a little bit he he looked at me and he was just like you all right about one thing that was a disaster he was unprepared and we should fire the debate team I was like oh okay well uh that's that's a I I think that's all you need to know about tonight you know when you have your surrogate in the debate room saying you you should fire the debate prep team I think we know who won and who lost that that that's a pretty clear tell that including the guy who just lost the debate appearing in the spin room the combination of the two is really quite telling okay Ari I know you have been dying to talk about what happened I think it was 27 minutes is that right sounds about right after the debate which is the endorsement by a certain Superstar I just talked about I am a Swifty I had to play your role because you weren't on the set earlier yet but you do it better so tell us a little bit about what this means and culturally I mean it's it endorsements don't always matter but this one feels like it does uh Taylor Swift has a huge following and it overlaps with a big part of the Coalition that uh the Harris campaign would like to win Taylor Swift's endorsement is so sought after and coveted we have up on the screen her her statement there that Donald Trump was lying about and pretending he got it and we'll start there she said that she called out Donald Trump with the endorsement she has a lot of power she can say this the way she wants she picked a big Knight to do it and said Trump was basically lying about this with these AI images that he was posting pretending he got it he didn't and she says quote the simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth and so as Taylor would say are you ready for it uh I think Donald Trump might be down bad crying at the gym now and she signed this memorably childless cat lady which is another strong feminist and culturally cool flip of JD Vance's Infamous sexist Comet and I am reminded of other uh Taylor lyrics uh in the cat real going keep it going well karma is a cat you know mhm hurring in my lap flexing like a damn acrobat you were going to go there me and Karma Vibe like that M and is this karma for one of the many people we've seen this throughout her career and her life one of the many people who underestimated her or antagonized her or tried to narrow her um she's also said you caged me then called me crazy who's afraid of little old me you should be and I think this is lyrics and truth but also something that are hundreds of millions of global followers and many tens of millions of people in the United States a diverse following but one that does lean young but with parents involved as as Nicole Wallace mentioned uh this is exactly the kind of enthusiasm that you cannot buy or trade it has to be somewhat organic this is her decision it speaks on behalf of the feminist and other issues that are at stake she talked about that in the statement she has many people who will be not necessarily brainwashed by this as the right might try to complain but who will be giving the Harris walls ticket another look tonight and tomorrow and I can tell you something else there are a lot of people who will hear about and watch parts of the debate there are young people who may not have watched debate and may not have decided if they're voting and they're waking up to these posts and they're talking about it with each other and they should do their own research she said that it was a very sophisticated and thoughtful message it wasn't you have to do this um but she's also posted tonight links to where to register to vote if there are tight margins in some of these states especially in the blue wall and we see a larger youth or female turnout this could be part of the story that also uh started tonight so we may be at an inflection point it's a really interesting I mean remember back when she endorsed Joe Biden there was a big uh increase in voter registration you could see the numbers increase just from that moment I thought her her statement was very thoughtful as well I'm just going to pick up the Baton of the Taylor Swift lyrics since earlier I referenced these since they were playing at the rally that vice president Harris was at which was uh I'm so tired of running as fast as I can if I would I get there faster if I were a man which was the perfect lyric because one of the things that struck me about this debate was that she owned she flipped the gender Dynamic she flipped the power Dynamic I guess I should say from you know and she spoke with secretary Clinton which I think is so interesting we'll never know the totality of everything they talked about but I'm betting that secretary Clinton learned some things from those debates maybe she gave her some advice and from that moment she aggressively shook hands she kind of controlled the debate in a way that Trump who's kind of a a sexist bully yeah wasn't necessarily prepared for it but what struck you Molly about the debate what look Harris is a prosecutor right she was a crimes prosecutor she was Attorneys General she was uh Senator and the vice president so she has a lot of experience and she's had a lot of experience in the Senate with these hearings so I I knew she was up for this the thing that she had to do here that was a delicate balance was she had to prosecute the case while making the case for herself right and she was able to do that she is not just Prosecuting Trump she's also saying why she is a better candidate than he is and that is a balance I think that the handshake was brilliant right it caught him off guard and from and you know how are you going to resist a handshake right I mean that's what you're supposed to do and not just a handshake but I'm kamla Harris right right right and he just so I think she sort of got him on that and then the other thing she did which I thought was going to be really difficult and she was able to do really seamlessly was this realtime fact check because even though the moderators were able to do some really good I thought they did really good questions I thought they pushed back and kept coming back back to questions in a way that you have to do with Trump she was also able at a bunch of points to say like that's not true this is what is true and that's actually on live television as we all know here quite hard they did show that fact checking during a debate is quite possible and you can do it effectively and firmly and not every moment but at Key moments um which I think they deserve some credit for okay Michael steel you were quite animated when I saw you in the hallway earlier about that de try to I'm I'm going to see what you're going to tell me you think of the debate that you told me in the hallway what was your take on the debate Michael still go ahead what was the key moment she spanked that ass I'm sorry that's what she did she came and she walked on that stage look for me this it's one of those things that you didn't realize happened until about 20 to 30 minutes into the debate and it's what everyone's talked about and for me it was the pivotal most important moment of the debate was when when they were introduced and Donald Trump came out and if you watch go back I tell everybody to go back and watch this he comes out he goes direct to the podium he is not usually you go to the middle of the floor to greet your opponent he went to the opponent he had no intention of shaking her hand she walked across the stage right into his space stuck her hand out and said kamla Harris first off I'm saying my name so you get it right when you say it which he never said once during the entire debate two he never looked at her during the entire debate and there was at this point about 20 to 30 minutes in um where that moment for me hit and resonated because she owned that stage from that very first moment very much to what Molly was just saying that what she did was she prosecuted when she needed to prosecute and all other time she was presidential yeah and he looked small he looked withered he looked beaten but most importantly he looked pissed and there's nothing worse than a pissed bigot on the stage with a woman he can't control and he she gave him no quarter for that she gave him no room and even in the one moment where she talked while he was talking and you knew it was the moment he wanted and he rehearsed it and he was so anxious to say it when he looked at her he goes I'm speaking I'm speaking does that sound then he said does that sound familiar does that sound famili he was feeling clever yeah he was feeling in his oats he was clever and there was nothing yeah you could hear a collective what did he just do across the country even amongst his own people so I think tonight um was definitive yeah for her tonight KLA Harris showed that she was not just a vice president that she was in fact ready to be president on foreign policy on the economy on domestic social issues on issues sensitive issues around abortion and race she had a presidential vein that that popped out very clearly for the country to see and Donald Trump the only thing he could do was stand there and look at the floor sulk pout and on Twitter the only thing MAA could complain about was oh ABC why are they factchecking only Donald Trump uh because he was the only one lying on the well you know and you know what's striking about that is sort of Roger Al's the disgraced Fox executive and Michael steel and Rachel mattow and Tim in our spin room all agree on one thing uh alss has passed away so he's not saying it today but he's said it many times in his life you could see it on mute you can see it on and Rachel mentioned that earlier and that's the thing we all understand the Bluster and the spin and the performance and we know Donald Trump is an actor and a liar and came to prominence as a TV reality game show host um the only thing people know about reality shows is they ain't real but even he on his it was on his face uh I've heard some people say this was a knockout that I didn't see a knockout I saw her perform better uh and I saw her answer questions while he ran and ducked and looked upset and I don't think that's a good look for him uh but no I don't I don't I'm not saying you said this but I don't see this as the debate ends the election no no no and she did to your point I agree with you Ari no this was not a knockout and I don't think that was her intention I don't think she really came in there to knock him out I think you really put your finger on she had to go in there and just find that spot where she could rattle him enough right to keep him off his game yeah and she could then play her game a little bit more freely yeah and that's and just to finish that that one point he even with the acting and the spin he looked aware in real time that it wasn't going well no he looked very aware of that we have to sneak in a very quick break here we have much more to get to a senior adviser of the Harris walls campaign and Sam is going to join us [Music] next if we can come up with a plan that's going to cost our people our population less money and be better Healthcare than Obamacare then I would absolutely do it but until then I'd run it as good as it can be run so just yes or no you still do not have a plan I have concepts of a plan not to worry America he has concepts of a plan and joining the conversation from Philadelphia is senior adviser for the Harris walls campaign Ian Sams who I'm sure he's too professional to have chuckled during that moment but we all chuckled a little bit um it seemed like let me start hearing and I mean I want to talk about that too but it seemed like Trump I mean we've been talking about it he had a pretty bad night um vice president Harris um had a very good night um she seemed like she was in a very good mood uh afterwards when she was at the campaign event or this the the watch party uh have you had a chance to speak to her at all since she finished the debate no she's been uh over at the watch party I've been here in the spin room but uh look I think that you're exactly right I think Donald Trump got rattled I think that people saw from vice president Harris the prosecutor that she is Prosecuting the political case against four years of Donald Trump and fact may be more than four years a lot of Americans maybe have forgotten some of the Contours of his record when he was president and she wasn't going to let him get away from this debate without the American people hearing about how he led the economy into the ditch and I think what's most important kind of about what she what we saw from her tonight you saw in the first few minutes you know she contrasted their Vision she talked about her plans to help small business growth and her plans to lower costs with Donald Trump's plans to cut taxes for those at the very top I mean she talked about actual issues that matter to people and Donald Trump got rattled and started talking about people eating dogs I mean it was weird and so I think that clearly she was under his skin but I think that people got to see the choice that exists in the election between someone who's offering a new way forward for the country and someone who represents the past let let me ask you about the eating dogs is weird I did a whole fact check on this whole story last night that I retweeted if anybody wants to know what he was talking about um that aside there were some moments that I think were very strategically smart um and you were part of the prep you're part of you're a senior part of this team one of them we've been talking about is aggressively seeking the handshake and introducing herself so let me start there how did you guys decide to do that I'm sure there was a weighing of whether that was smart or not and what were you hoping to kind of get out of that moment well I think uh it showed uh that KLA harrris was in command from the very first moment of this debate I think that uh she also wanted to make sure she took the time to introduce herself uh to former president Trump as Kamala Harris uh which is how you actually pronounce her name I think it was important to lay the marker for former president Trump that she is a strong leader who's willing to stand up to him and it's really not a surprise she's someone who's been standing up to bullies her whole life including as Attorney General of California taking on Bad actors and predators and so I think it laid the mark for the debate to come that she was not going to shy away from his taunts lies attacks and she certainly didn't throughout the debate that no she she didn't she she did have some good facial moments where she couldn't believe what he was saying which I think we all appreciated as you were watching it and what what happens when you do debate prep is you prepare for any scenario of what the other person is going to do is there anything about how Trump handled this that surprised you guys look I think that even his team team is uh sort of leaking out that he was not as disciplined as they uh had prepared him to be uh that they wanted him to talk about other things that he didn't talk about um so you know Donald Trump uh really became the worst version of himself tonight I I think that one would have expected that he might have had a little bit more of a concentrated approach on what he was going to do on the debate stage but at the end of the day uh uh can't teach an old dog new tricks and at uh Donald Trump decided to show the American people a lot of what they don't like about but I think look I do want to you know she had an amazing night and I think she showed that she's ready to be president she was presidential uh anybody watching that debate could see a commander-in-chief uh in KLA Harris um but this is going to be a really really close election and um I think that it's important that everybody uh enjoy the wind tonight but understand that we have to go right back to work tomorrow because we're in a divided country and it's very very important that she got the chance to both hold him accountable and share her vision but we've got 50 some odd days left to continue sharing that Vision with every American who still is getting to know her in a lot of ways we heard that message exactly from her when she was speaking at that watch party and Sams I know you've been up very late many nights um you're up late with us again thank you so much uh for joining us um this evening uh we have to sneak in a very quick break but we have so much more to talk about in our live late night debate coverage we're just getting started here remember this moment when JD van visited a restaurant and he could not figure out what to order neither could he figure out how to have a conversation with the staff at that restaurant well the whole incident was award okay um just a you know random assortment stuff the beginning of July okay is okay how almost 2 years okay good how long just everything yeah me a lot of glaz and en rolls just whatever makes sense compare that to what team walls and Kamala haris have always done whenever they are on campaign TRS and they happen to pass by a diner or a restaurant and here are some of the key lessons you can always take away or J can learn from the two [Music] [Applause] everyone come here what is that what is that about it's true it cost nothing to be happy it cost nothing to always smile remember to be happy JD always be happy well his lesson number three captured in this his [Music] [Music] I did kind of cheat and have something ready for you yes one more lesson to go and I'm quite sure he'll always get his perfect next time
