here to the pregame show where today kicks off its Big 10 tournament action in the quarterfinals as the number one seed taking on the eighth seated Michigan State Spartan it's time now for our Scouting Report segment presented by Purdue Global puru online university for working adults I'm joined Now by assistant coach Brandon Brantley coach I know you're a humble guy but earlier this week the Big 10 announced its postseason Awards and you were the recipient of the Howard Moore assistant coach of the year award obviously very welld deserved you've been at this thing for a long time now at Purdue had a lot of success so what did winning that award mean to you um and it's it's great to be recognized um by the conference but um anybody that asked me said man I wish I take a blow torch or a knife you know what whatever that trophy is made of and I split it into equal parts because um I work with great guys um Paul l b a wealth of knowledge um to the staff Terry Johnson um shows up every day PJ and and Sasha man brought great energy they do great things with our guys the G Tommy and Jared I mean they work the tails off every single day nick tuso uh with the film Elliot Bloom is is is the best in the business um even Deb in the office man with what she does every day and Chad young you know is working with our guy so um man if I if I accept that award I'm I'm accepting it on behalf of everyone that I work with well as far as our last game goes we took down the the Wisconsin Badgers at home on senior day and I do want to get your thoughts on those seniors we have a group of six and and they tied the most Big 10 wins in history by any senior class with that win against the Badgers so you've been able to coach these guys all four years what's that experience been like that's great and it's a little bit of sweet because uh you wish guys could stay around forever but uh that's just not the case but great memories of each and every guy in that senior class Warriors you know that's the first thing that come to mind remember when when they first walked in the door uh they just gave you that feeling like man this this is going to be a fun and enjoyable ride but go to war with these guys um any day of the week and um here we are once again um competing for championships all right onto today's game as I mentioned earlier it's the eight- seated Michigan State Spartans they were able to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers yesterday in the second round of the tournament they're of course of course led by head coach Tom ISO and we were able to defeat them at macarina just a couple weeks ago 80 to 74 certainly a close game there what were your takeaways from that win um really hard fought anytime you play Michigan State um you know you better bring your hard hat in your lunchbox um because it's going to be War they came in and played us really tough but I thought our guys really battled and competed anytime you play a Michigan State team two things come to mind you got to keep them on of transition you got to get them off the glass and know that'll be the case again today brought up the transition going into that game they were leading the Big 10 and 15 fast break points per game he held them to just three uh which was certainly a part of that victory for us how were we able to do that um I think you really got to get up and stop the ball cuz they're going to put makes and misses alike um got to have Center safeties be able to get back and protect the paint cuz those those guys do a really good job of sprinting ahead um looking for Outlets bigs do a great job of Rim running um and I thought our safeties really had a um still Focus that game um no matter what happened we were going to get back and and and limit those points all right last question for you the center position for the Spartans it's it's certainly been a a controversial one I guess as far as their team goes a lot of revolving doors at that spot but as of late they've really started to play Jackson koher the sophomore and Xavier Booker The Freshman extended minutes uh a little bit different than maybe Carson Cooper or Mattis isoko those guys who have played the majority of the minutes this year at that Center Spot what from an offensive standpoint does Ker and Booker add to their team kler is a guy uh similar to Trey Kaufman he can get on the Block doesn't necessarily need angles uh he'll take those turnarounds uh really patient has great footwork um so you got to make sure that um he's not getting easy catches cuz he can do he can do some damage when he gets his head up Booker is a guy who kind of stayed the course he didn't he didn't he didn't play a whole lot and uh um um now down the stretch um they've been going to him a little bit more um and he's a guy that that can step out can make shots um really good in transition both of those guys um in various games have come off the bench and given them some pop um and we got to make sure that um that's not the case today um ker we got to make sure as I said before he's he's not getting easy catches um and Booker is a guy who doesn't need much to get his head up he got his head up against us at Mack he came off the bench and hit us for 11 points and so our communication and ball screens um has to be Chris but he's another one of those guys um um who really Sprints in transition so we got to make sure we getting back and not giving up those easy points all right thanks good luck today coach thank you Bob there he is Howard Moore assistant coach of the year for the Big 10 the Spartans coming off an impressive win yesterday against Minnesota let's visit with head coach Matt Painter his pregame comments presented by Purdue Federal Credit Union Purdue Federal Credit Union proud to be the official Credit Union for Purdue fans discover the credit union difference at purduefed.com well coach payner as you well know Purdue just faced the Spartans two weeks ago two weekends ago so safe to assume The Scouting Report might be a little fresh in our team's heads about uh how in the world you try to slow down Michigan State yeah no no doubt about it and I think you see um you know they play yesterday against Minnesota so you you see that live game and um you know they had a tough game at Indiana that could have went either way um you know since then obviously they got they got a really good win against Northwestern and then um our game could have went either way you know we um you know really had to battle them and but I I thought they I thought they really played hard um thought they had a purpose and in what they were doing um against us I thought our defense in the second half and our ability to shoot our our guards knocked down some shots Mason made a big one late um you know uh Braden really shot the ball well flet shot the ball well so you know to go on top of that it just depends on how much more attention or what kind of attention they're going to give Zach I think that's what it comes down to right here do they feel what they did was right they just got to be better at it or are they going to mix some things up and we've seen a lot of different things but for us it's it's taking care of the basketball I think that was important our number was a pretty solid number the first time and that's what we got to keep having we got to keep having those good numbers we didn't have one you know against Wisconsin that we got to drop that number I think it was at 14 so I think that's going to be a big part of any game that we play on the rest of the play in in the rest of the year yeah here are the specific numbers just nine turnovers in that game against Michigan State for Purdue Michigan State also did a great job taking care of that basketball they had only seven uh turnovers in that game Purdue outrebound in Michigan State 3633 always a positive sign however 11 of Michigan State's 33 rebounds were offensive boards that that number is probably a little too high don't you think to to try to get them second time yeah no question and that's what you know when you play Michigan State that's what it is you got to keep them out of transition you got to keep them off the glass and if they're stealing points in those two areas and they're shooting the ball well you're probably going to lose the game so that's going to be key for us to keep them off the glass tonight you mentioned Zack Edy and Michigan State's approach 32 Points 11 rebounds four assists in that game against the Spartans um and yes I understand you're not in their you're not you're not in their coaches meetings you you like none of us know how in the world Michigan State might attack Zack Ed but with that said from Purdue's end um how do you approach that you you talk Z about hey might be a totally different look today might be the same how how do you go about that well that's just our adjustment you know we have a good feel for things you know we discuss it and when we don't we just talk about the differences here's the two or three things that could happen there's not going to be eight things that happen it's going to be you know one of these three things that happen you know in the last three games Zach has over 100 points against them so we've seen some things that haven't worked um we've seen some things they've had a little bit more success with for us it's keeping it simple being fundamentally sound making the Easy Pass if you one-on-one score it put two people on you or they clog it up get that ball mov one final note here in the month of March and I understand it's a small sample size only three games played but your ball Club is shooting a remarkable 52% from the three-point line is it a matter of guys just heating up at the right time is it about shot selection is about something you're doing offensively now what is it that's really allowed this team to to flourish from that three-point line yeah obviously you got to have the guys that can make shots you know we're one of the best shooting teams in the country so to me it's just the decision-making it's it's taking you know what the defense gives you not forcing things we still start the game with two or three possessions but we want to have back we got too many people trying to find their way in the game through their shooting and just let the defense dictate that they give you a layup take it they give you a jumper take it just keep taking what the defense gives you because there's going to be something there that they're going to give us they're going to overdo some things with Zack they're going to overdo some things on keeping the ball out of the paint and just make simple plays and keep the ball moving and keep screening for each other coach paner thank you good luck here today all right thank you coach painter's pregame comments presented by Purdue Federal Credit Union Purdue Federal Credit Union proud to be the official Credit the Purdue boiler makers the tip is moments away this is boiler maker basketball Purdue and Michigan State Big 10 tournament quarterfinal action let's get the keys to the game presented by FMC get season long disease protection from the inside out with zway brand fungicides from FMC thanks Rob key number one today is can Purdue contain Tyson Walker the same way they were able to the first time around in MA Arena he ended up with 14 points but just on five of 15 shooting a very inefficient day for Tyson Walker who leads them leads this Michigan State team in scoring at 18 points per game Braden Smith was the one who handled the Lion Share of that defensive assignment in that first matchup and I just thought he was fabulous defensively maybe his best defensive performance overall in his young career did a great job staying in front of Tyson Walker who's so Shifty off the dribble and then chasing him off some of those pin Downs that he really likes to come off of just shoot threes or mid-range jumpers Bren Smith excellent job in that first game and it's going to be a lot on him probably once again to stay with Tyson Walker and not allow him to get going he dropped 30 points last year in the meeting in East Lancing and almost was able single-handedly to get the Spartans to that Victory if it wasn't for Zack Ed's late game heroics with that gamewinner second key Purdue's ability to minimize the Michigan State transition game just one of the best aspects of this Michigan State team their offense really relies heavily on them being able to get down transition and get easy baskets before the defense gets set coming into that first match up two weeks ago Michigan state was leading the Big 10 in 15 with 15 fast break points per game puru holds them to just three fast break points in macarina just a fabulous job and honestly much of that was due to Peru limiting their live ball turnovers just such a big key from a you know a standpoint as far as leading that opposition out in the break Purdue just had nine total turnovers in that game but the live ball turnovers were very few just a handful and that's going to be key limiting those once again and then what really separates this Michigan State team from a fast break standpoint is not only on turnovers or or Miss shots where they out and go but they really push even on made field goals they get that outlet deep towards the front court and Purdue with their Jammer is going to have to get up there and disrupt the point guard and not allow him to get ahead of steam third and final key can Michigan State slow down big Z he's just been phenomenal against these guys zackie over 100 points the last three times theyve faced the Spartans he's dominated a lot of one-on-one coverage Michigan State tried to mix it up last game but it allowed some open three-point shooting produ shot 50% from three let's see what the Spartan Defense does against Zach this time around let us pause 10 seconds for water mold or storms for over 42 years at Hazen Suns we do restoration right the eight seated Michigan State Spartans are 19 and 13 on the season here's how they will go Tyson Walker 61 185lb grad student who started his career at Northeastern University he was a preseason all big 10 selection he's currently fifth in the Big 10 in scoring he was second Team all big 10 earlier this week Jaden Akens in the back court at 64 190 lb a junior from Farmington Michigan he had 13 points against the boom makers in the first matchup AJ hogard in the back court at 6'4 210 lb and a senior from Coatsville Pennsylvania honorable mention all big 10 this season was hogard out of forward Malik Hall 68 220 lb grad student from Aurora Illinois 12 points against the boy to make in the first game this year and Carson Cooper will start today against Purdue the 611 240lb sophomore from Jackson Michigan he did not start at Center in the first game against Purdue instead it was M Soko back on March the 2nd Tom mizo the head coach of the Spartans in his 29th season he's been the national coach of the year eight times the number one seated Purdue boom makers are 28 and three on the season here's how they will go Braden Smith at the point point guard 6' 175 lb sophomore from Westfield Indiana just named First Team all big 10 this week his running mate in the back Fort Lance Jones 61 200 pounder a 50-year player from Southern Illinois University originally from Evon Illinois the forwards are Fletcher lawyer 64 180 lb sophomore from Fort Wayne's Homestead High School he was big 10 honorable mention this week and Trey Kaufman ryn the 69ine 230 lb her red shirt S four from Sellersburg Indiana and the big man in the middle is the Big 10 Player of the Year Zack Ed 74 300 lb a senior from Toronto Ontario Canada Michigan State in green Purdue and white our officials Paul zels Courtney green and Earl Walton and we're just about ready for Big 10 quarterfinal tournament action from the Twin Cities Cooper at 611 will jump it up against the 7' 4 in Edy Paul zels tosses the ball high in the Sky Tip to our left as we set Courtside into the hands of Braden Smith and we are underway at the Target Center in Minneapolis Minnesota brue opening possession working left to right here against the Green clad Spartans top of the key catch from Braden Smith will fake a three dribble to the right elbow extended and keep the dribble Alive Now working back to the top of the key comes down the painted area shoots a right-handed lay he misses but Zack Ed is there to clean it up with a two-handed dunk off of an off defensive rebound Purdue leads two to nothing quickly in transition H Tyson Walker three transition bucket for Michigan State after a made bucket for Purdue it's three to2 Spartans well unbelievable they've already tied their transition points at this they had in Mackie arena with that huge three there Walker in the corner Braden Smith had missed the layup and couldn't quite get to Walker in transition lyer swings it right side where it's caught by Trey Kaufman Ren now dribble hand off to BR Smith he's dribbling on the right Arc to lawyer pulling up from 12 ft and scoring right wing Fletcher lawyer hits a mid-range jumper for his first scoring and Purdue has a 4 to3 lead over Michigan State we've played 65 seconds some nice off Ball action there by Fletcher to get into that mid-range and just elevates over the top of the defender a smooth pull up there from Fletch hog guard dribbling between the circles guarded by Jones tried to throw it in the left corner but it was tipped Away by Braden Smith and tipped out of bounds Michigan State Keeps The Possession with 18 on the shot clock and Tyson Walker running off some screening action to the left corner Braden Smith shoots the Gap a little bit and he's able to get his left hand in there to deflect it out of bounds on the sideline aens will inbound from the sideline just down from our broadcast position to our left Spartans attacking the bucket to our left here in this first half Walker right side to hogard he dribbles top of the ski key off a screen from Cooper now goes to the right Baseline and stops throws in the corner to Walker Bren Smith on him Walker will rise and fire from 18 it's long no good rebounded by Edie Zack second rebound of the game here comes Purdue left to right in the white uniforms Purdue is the designated home team on the scoreboard Lance Jones a floater it was blocked but he was fouled the the block was clean in front of him but what happened is he was hit in the head from behind by hey AJ hogard first foul of the game goes against AJ hogard and that sends Lance Jones to the foul line with two foul shots Pur with some really good movement offensively Lance Jones comes off that handoff there from Zack Ed at the top of the key his Defender really caught behind trailing and then hogard with that desperation move there to try to block it from behind and definitely caught with maybe his elbow the back of Lance Jones head as Lance gets the first free throw to roll through that equals Lance's scoring in the first game against Michigan State he had one point got a couple things were already tying from the first match up here early in this game where's number 55 on the white uniform makes the second foul shot two points in the game for Lance Jones Purdue leading 6 to3 Malik call top of the key bobbled it got it back chess pass left wing to Akens now top of the key Cooper he dribbles with the right elbow extended picks up the dribble hands to Malik hall Hall to the right elbow now top of the key to Akens on a quick chest pass he'll pull up from 15 ft right elbow in and out no good rebounded Trey coff and ren of the vo makers off a great blockout by tkr Lance Jones step back three no faked gets it back now working right elbow stops chest pass it goes inside to Ed on the Block against Cooper no double team for the moment here he goes one-on-one shoots and scores over Carson Cooper oh one-on-one there for Zach he held the ball up high and surveyed the area for a little bit then realized it is one-onone and just got to that jump hook in the middle of Lane easy had eight to8 to three over Michigan State 2 and A2 minutes expired and out of bounds the ball was tipped by Lance uh Lance about said Lance Edy Zack Edy and perue gives the baller I should say Michigan state gets to keep the possession at the Baseline left 1726 to go in the half Akens open underneath the bucket and it's blocked Away by Edy Zack Edy with a block shot Purdue On The Run lawyer coming down the painted area lost the ball out of bounds and gives it right back to Michigan state lawyer dribbled himself into some trouble there three Spartan green jerseys were waiting on him and Fletch turns the ball over Fletch trying to get into the body of Carson Cooper to potentially get a layup off and unfortunately hit his body and the ball just squirts out of bounds on the Baseline spens in green with a white trim top of the key Malik H chess pass left wing hogard hogard was six of six from the floor yesterday against Minnesota Malik h on a feed from hogard and a reverse layup for Malik Hall his first scoring Purdue leading 8 to five nice pick and dive action there by the Spartans Lance Jones and coffen ren get caught there a little bit with two guys on the ball they don't Veer and get the switch and Zach just not quite there to get over in time B for Edy caught against Cooper dribbles himself underneath the bucket shoots and is fouled will it be on Cooper or Hall Malik Hall first foul on Malik Hall Rue up to a a leading I should say 85 1638 Mark first half Ed at the line where he's a 72% foul shooter and he makes the first five points early for Zack Edy named The Big 10 Player of the Year this past Tuesday also all also named the all defensive team and oh by the way picked up his 12th Big 10 player of the week honor a big 10 Record 12 times Cooper stepped in the lane early it won't matter because e made the foul shot six points for Zack Ed produ up 10 to5 yesterday Michigan State trailed 7 nothing to Minnesota to start the game still came back to win by 10 Hall between the circles dribbles to the left wing with one bounce gives to hogart he works his way left elbow now to Cooper he dribbles to the right elbow gives to Akens Akens drives into the painted area kick of the corner Walker was going to shoot a three instead dro the ball got it back gives to hogard for an open three he Ed and misses a shot first shot of the tournament that AJ hogart has missed Purdue rebounds Braden Smith with a ball 1602 to go in the half inside of Trey Kaufman Ren on Malik call on the right block going to work one-on-one spinning and shooting missing and on a rebound Zack Ed fell down Michigan State grabbed the rebound here come the Spartans Akens a three in transition it's short rebound to Braden Smith 1545 to go first half puru up 105 brayen Smith pushed off and he'll be called for the offensive foul used his right arm to push off while dribbling with the left that's a Purdue turnover and we go to a from American Fork Utah Purdue is subbed in Mason Gillis the 66 red red shirt senior from Newcastle who just this week was named the Big 10 Sixth Man of the Year Michigan State the ball Malik Hall on the right block double teamed swings it out right wing now it comes all the way left wing to Walker Walker off a screen from ker to the top of the key out of the left wing goes Walker pulling up from 18 ft and knocking it home Tyson Walker has five early points BRS up 10 to7 that's a nice mid-range pull up there by Tyson Walker Zack Edy in that drop coverage they're going to give up that kind of shot there Walker definitely is somebody who thrives at that lob for Edy and a foul on the Block as the ball was being lobed to him Jackson kler was actually holding the jersey of Zach so he couldn't jump to catch the ball foul on kler his first has Purdue Subs in it's only Minnesota native Camden Heidi the red shirt freshman from wetta Minnesota who actually played in this building in a state championship game as a junior is on the floor for Purdue brayen Smith left elbow bounces into Edy he'll work against Coler he'll spin he was fouled count the basket and a foul B the makers at the line for an and one perdue's degree plus gives students the chance to earn a Bachelor of Science and one from the College of liberal arts both in four years check out the liberal arts degree plus and see if and one is right for you just a fantastic finish there by Zach through contact Tyson Walker tries to come around the backside to get the strip Zach hits the free throw and Tyson Walker hits him on the right arm and Zach able to concentrate and still hit that off balance hook shot on that Baseline Purdue leading 13-7 four team fouls for Michigan State four players with one AP piece Malik H to Walker top of the key dribbling with a left hand picks up the dribble throws to hollan on the far a far right wing three steps outside of the arc hman wants to dribble in lost the ball it's loose on the floor he picked it back up just in time to throw a walker shot clock at seven Walker near the timeline has to go top of the key now left wing Now snake dribbles attacks Ed shoots and misses over the top of Edy loose ball picked up by Zach Edy boy a walker almost made a spectacular shot over Zach he that ball spun out of there Here Comes Bren Smith for the Border makers to Gillis he lobs it in inside to Edy Edy on Coler spinning shooting and missing this time that was long first missed shot of the game for Zach Edy Purdue 13 Michigan State seven at the 1405 Mark Michigan State in green Purdue in white Akens at the top of the key hesitate dribbles now works his way to the right elbow cut off by lawyer puru in the man-to-man defense Akens pulling up from 18 ft straight away long no good rebounded Camden Heidi who jumped high in the sky to get that rebound the Minnesota native on a rebound quickly outl to Bren Smith 1344 to go in a half Smith left wing to Heidi catch and shoot three on the way it is short Purdue's first attempted three-point shot of the game is no good rebounded by Michigan State very nice find there by Braden Smith as he got up in the air to hit cam in the corner him just leap that thing well short Walker fouled I think by Braden Smith that's two fouls on Braden Smith that is not good brue's only committed two fouls all game but both are on Braden Smith the starting point guard he will exit the game and he's replaced by Lance Jones Purdue 13 Michigan State 7 at the 1327 Mark that is the unfortunate thing about having you know Braden Smith someone so valuable having to guard somebody as impactful as Tyson Walker is there high chance of probability you could pick up a couple fouls Xavier Booker the Indianapolis native at 611 a freshman played to Cathedral High School is into the game for Michigan State Walker almost turned it over got it back and missed the layup tipped in by Coler TI tipped in by ker his first scoring of the game he only averages two points a game and it's Purdue 13 Michigan State nine that was a really bad play that turned out well for Michigan State so lucky Rue with the ball here lawyer wants to drive attacks ker shot blocked loose on the floor in the corner picked up by Lance Jones to Gillis inside to Edy shot clock at seven Ed one on one fouled against by ker fouled by kler not against kler two fouls on Jackson Ker off of the bench boo Birds coming out Purdue fans are angry they think kler was a little Uber aggressive on the foul Michigan State fans are angry because every time Zach Edy touches it their team is getting called for a personal well Michigan State playing with fire a little bit trying to have Jackson coer guard Zack Ed 101 they got bailed out by Zach missing a bunny last time on to the bench he goes That's ker replaced by mty Soko 69 senior from West Africa played only 1 minute in the game yesterday and a turnover turnover by Fletcher lawyer who is driving now a hogart he'll drive to the other end he'll make a layup no wipe it off the board a charging foul a charging foul on AJ hogard Lance Jones set his feet and takes the charge two fouls on hogard impressive play there transition defense-wise by Lance Jones taking that charge on the hit from hogard in the chest but Fletcher lawyer there another you know driving opportunity where the ball is stripped out of his hands you know I'm sure he feels like there's contact and maybe a foul but that's probably three times now he's drove in and lost the ball as he's been trying to make a move towards the basket Purdue with a ball 1230 Mark of the first half leading 13 to9 and now a foul on sasoko trying to guard Edy in the post and look at Tom mizo he is angry not at the official but at sasoko for putting two hands in the middle of the back of Edy and this is a one and one now for Zack Edy miles C is subbed in for Purdue 65 freshman from Indianapolis into the game Cohen Carr a 65 freshman from East Point Georgia from Michigan State Zack Ed's first free throw one and one on the way no good left it short rebounded by jayen Akin both teams going deep to the bench early Purdue up 139 Spartans with a ball Allan dribbling to the top of the key on the left hand throws it high right wing caught by Xavier Booker throws it right back to Hollman on the chess PS he dribbles at the right wing guarded by Gillis now to Booker guarded by Heidi shot clock at four Akin's going to try to go strong and another charging foul taken by Lance Jones Lance Jones has taken not one but two charges in the last two minutes of this ball game just high level individual defense by Lance Jones one on AJ hogard this one on Jaden aens two really talented perimeter players Lance has that really big time lateral foot speed where he can move his feet and stay in front and that time he stays in front of Akens as he tries to go with his left hand and he shoves off LS right in the chest how about Matt painer playing the two freshman together here miles cven and Camden Heidi we have rarely seen that this year Gillis the three off of pin down top of the key no good Coen Carr a rebound for Michigan State here come the Spartans quickly right to left hman stopping at the top of the key throwing it inside as Soko he's going to back down Mason Gillis from the right block kick it back out for a three it's on the way for Hollman no good Zach Edy rebounds Here Comes Purdue left the right 1122 to go first half Pur leading 13 to9 and playing with Braden Smith on the bench with two fouls Gillis inside to Edy Here Comes The Devil team turns from sissoko makes a bank shot from the right side Zack Edy already in double figure scoring blue leads 15-9 Michigan State right to left hman at the right elbow Heidi's on him goes strong to the left block spins goes it out High to Booker now right wing it goes to Akens with 10 on the shot clock for the Spartans Purdue up 159 not a lot of offense to be found early in this game for either team hman between the leg dribble trying to cook Camden Heidi blocked grabbed by Soko but a foul on a rebound it'll go against Purdue I believe coven it is Miles koven a foul Timeout BW Fusion proud presenting sponsor of blue men's basketball postseason Purdue leading Michigan State 15-9 1040 to play in the first half neither team playing well offensively Michigan State four of 14 shooting one of four from three that one make was their first shot of the game Purdue is five of 11 shooting Zack Ed made four the five shot Purdue's 0 of two from the three-point line well it's certainly from an offensive standpoint for Purdue been just the Zack EDI show he's and it's no surprise right he kind of owns the Spartans from a scoring standpoint he's four or five from the field three or four from the line 11 total points five boards and no turnovers plus the two block shots en forcing his will defensively protecting the rim he's subbed out of the game now for Caleb first but Zach has been super impactful five rebounds for Caleb uh not for Caleb for Zach and as you mentioned Caleb is in for Zach currently Caleb the 610 Jr from Fort Wayne Michigan State the ball lakens chess fast right side Booker further right wing it goes to Walker back to Booker he'll drive and try to dunk and he was fouled tried to dunk on Miles culvin culvin wasn't going to stand for it and cven fouls at The Rim one Indianapolis kid challenging another and that'll send Xavier ER to the foul line two fouls for Miles Cen wow that was some highlevel athleticism meeting in the air between miles Colvin and Xavier Booker Booker was trying to go for the big time poster Jam just back ironed it and it looked pretty clean to me from my vantage point as Booker misses the first free throw off the back left side of the rim but they called uh looking at Courtney green as he made the call he told Coach painer there was some body contact uh in the air but man that was two dudes just really flying high Xavier Booker Indianapolis Cathedral High School Miles coven Indianapolis Heritage Christian High School Booker made the second foul shot so missed the first made the second Purdue 15 Michigan State 10 Fletcher lawyer into the game replacing miles pin Lance Jones over the timeline left to right on a left-handed dribble throws high right wing extended to First back to Jones catching shoot three left wing ballseye alance Jones Purdue's first made three of the ball game and that's got to be a breakdown by Michigan State defensively Lance Jones tosses that ball to Caleb firstman just steps behind the screen Michigan State goes removed that's too much space for a guy like Lance Jones Lance was 0 of six shooting in the first game against Michigan State today he has a made three-point basket BW up 18 to 10 at the 945 Mark Michigan State lobing Cohen Carr couldn't catch it tried to catch and dunk didn't catch it cleanly and cam Heidi grabbed it pry with the ball now they're running a set play a lot for the Freshman Carr but a poor pass leads to a Purdue takeaway Caleb first right elbow extended now to Lance Jones dribbling right wing stopping throws it inside to Caleb first caught it near the block trying to back down against Booker shot blocked by Booker Xavier Booker long arms at 611 blocking the shot Michigan State the ball really good defense there by Xavier Booker Malik Hall looks at a three left wing instead tries it back down Heidi now from the Block gets there and stops throws it out High to Akens with a shot clock at 12 game clock at nine Hall drives in fouled on the drive by Heidi boy Malik Hall you could tell he knew that he had the Freshman Heidi on him and he was doing everything he could to drive that ball drawing the foul the foul against Heidi his first Trey Kaufman Ren will enter the game replacing Caleb first 854 to go in this first half Purdue 18 Michigan State 10 pretty good defensive possession there by Purdue overall I was really impressed as Malik Hall was trying to back down camon Heidi earli in The Possession puru comes over with that Buffalo look from the double coming from the Baseline side deters Hall's action they have to pull it back out and then Hall the senior kind of in Desperate mode was able to drive cam and get that bumping call late in the shot clock boy neither team has been very good offensively here maybe it's just good defense it's a takeaway a steal for t Ren quickly to Lance Jones left Baseline Lance goes stops there throws it back out to Trey Coffman Ren on the left wing speaking of bad offense M because they just threw it away inside Ed spinning and turning against Cooper missing the shot however poan rebounds for the Spartans he wants to go in a hurry right to left the Minneapolis basket and a foul foul will be on Camden Heidi his second and this will be an and one opportunity for Malik Hall C Heidi a little overzealous there on that pick and roll situation trying to come from the backside to potentially block Malik Hall but gets up in the air and Malik Hall The Savvy veteran feels that contact from behind and then finishes over the top of Zach really impressive finish Honestly by Malik Hall in that tight window Ethan Morton subbing In For the First Time The 67 senior from Butler Pennsylvania Hall does make the foul shot five points for Malik Hall Purdue 18 Michigan State 13 with 715 to go in this first half Perdue left the right wearing white here at the Target Center home of the t- Wolves Tre coffin Rim steps through a double team misses the bank shot however on a right-handed hook hogard rebounds he wants to go quickly and Ethan fouled him in transition foul first the foul first on Ethan Morton and this will be a one and one for AJ hogard team foul number seven for Purdue and that's that pressure that the Spartans can put on you you know after makes or Miss field goals right there coffin Ren struggling right now with that righty hook misses it and game yesterday against Minnesota he's missed a field goal attempt in this game and now he's missed the front end of a one and one BW the ball here here goes Braden Smith right to left on a dribble tried to get to the rim shoot a layup it's missed Malik Hall rebounds Michigan State on a two-on-one walker a catch and shoot three and transition is good eight points for Walker and all of a sudden it's Purdue 18 Michigan State 16 six in a row for the Spartans that's tough right there Bren Smith gets to where he wants just misses a little bunny there with the finger roll and it leads to the three Ethan Morton dribbling in shooting from 14 ft good Ethan Morton a 14-footer inside of the paint quickly Here Comes Michigan State halleman Driving left block and stopping throwing it out High to hogard swing it high right side to Hall handing off to Walker Walker back to Hall shooting a three off a give and go it is no good around a couple of times let your lawyer rebounding 6 minutes to go first half for to 20 Michigan State 16 brayen Smith shooting from the right elbow in and out no good tipped around a couple of times grabbed by Walker ahead to Hallman they're off and running back to Walker wide open three in transition this one's no good but tipped in by Hollman Trey hman had inside rebounding position tipped it into the basket with his right hand it's Purdue 20 Michigan State 18 michig stay really increasing the tempo of this game and it's allowed them to get successful opportunities in transition 528 to go in this first half Purdue with a two-point lead a moment ago Purdue was up eight at 18- 10 now it's 20 to 18 and Purdue almost turned it over Hall got his hands on it knocked it out of bounds Pur keeps the ball sideline just to our right Mason Gillis subbing in for Trey Kaufman Ren and Lance Jones subbing in for Ethan Morton well nice to see Ethan hit that pull up right there coach on the other end was yelling at Ethan on that rebound opportunity that Hollman tipped in he wanted Ethan to try to get that inside position to get Hollman off the glass mason Gillis rifling it inside to Braden Smith and Smith with a layup what a beautiful pass to open up Bren Smith for his buck first bucket of the game Purdue now leads 22 to 18 at the 505 Mark you called it Rob what a pass there The Vision by Mason to lead braen away from the Defender a nice job by Braden on the cut to get behind the defense oh guard dribbles right elbow attacks Zack Edy at the right block and stops now a hall he dribbles in he goes strong to the basket and he'll have a bucket and a foul on Mason Gillis to boot another and one opportunity for Malik Hall as he dribbled strong to the bucket a spin move made a left-handed layup and Mason Gillis has his first foul called against him of this game that is a Le play there by Malik called the spin move in the middle of the lane getting to the left side and then finding the body of Mason Gillis not allowing Mason to get vertical and contest he just Dives his right shoulder into the body of Mason then uses that off hand to finish off the window Malik call completed an and one a moment ago he'll try to do it again the grad student from Aurora Illinois and he does Malik averages 12 and 1/2 a game had 12 against Purdue in the first meeting and it's Purdue 22 Michigan State 21 Michigan State fans on their feet Purdue throwing it inside to Edy back at the lawyer Edy will drive had it blocked I should say Moyer drove had it blocked puru keeps the ball Lance Jones to the rim and he'll have an and one opportunity boy puru got lucky on a couple of tip balls there that just kept ending up in the hands of Voom makers it ended up at the top of the key to Lance Jones who said to heck with I'll drive it to the basket and he has an and one opportunity for do it the line for an and one Purdue's degree plus gives students the chance to earn a Bachelor of Science and one from the College of liberal arts both in four years took out the liberal arts degree plus and see if and one is right for you that foul by the way was on Jackson CER his third and how about the play of Lance Jones as he shoots the free throw and knocks it in completing the three-point play he's got eight points he's two of three from the field he made his only three-point attempt three of three from the line he's taken two charges he has been huge in this first half with Bren Smith being saddle with foul trouble miles kven back in for Purdue guarding AJ hogide bounce pass to the right elbow caught by hall now left wing Akens Akens fakes a three instead dribbles in shoot from 12 and misses out of bounds last Touch by whom they say Purdue last Touch by Purdue shot clock will be at 20 for Michigan State 414 to go in this first half Purdue 25 Michigan State 21 Hall catch is on a l on the arc on the right wing shot fakes now dribbles in shoots a pull-up jumper from 8 ft it's no good but the ball is tipped right back to Hall Paul this time will shoot from 15 he'll miss again but rebounded by the Spartans Cooper got the rebound for the Spartans Walker will shoot he will miss and Edy gets the rebound boy three opportunities for Michigan State they came up empty on all three and all three really quality looks from about 12 ft but Purdue fortunate there to get out of there with no damage done by the Spartans 25 Michigan State 21 with a 340 Mark of the half Mason Gillis to cvin Bobs inside right block to Ed now they are going to double team out High to Loya Loya wants to drive on Carr shot clock at three cvin a catch and shoot three underneath that green uni left-hander shoots and hits first scoring of the game for Carr guys just help go impressive free throw there for Carr stepping up in a big one-on-one situation there not a guy who gets to the foul line very much but he stepped it there in a big moment one more for the left on the dribbles once by the way shoots and boy he made those look easy Cohen Carr he'll exit the game replaced by Jaden Akens for the Spartans Braden Smith back on the bench right now for Purdue he has two fouls he has two points and with this group Lance Jones serves as the point guard Lance over the timeline left to right on a between the leg dribble we're under 3 minutes to go in the half BR throws it inside to Edie to back cutting kovin he dunks with two hands what a cut by cven and a perfect pass delivered by Edie oh that's an excellent out of bounds after timeout play they've run that for Heidi a number of times this year this time it's culvin coming off the back screen around the free throw line gets the two-handed flush put up 2923 hman dribbles to the top of the key stops there gives the Cooper right elbow he dribbles twice gives it off to an open three-point shooter it's up in no good missed by Tyson Walker in rebounded by the bom makers miles kven very lucky there Lance Jones tried to shoot the Gap and Tyson Walker made a nice play without the ball to get free 215 to go in a half Pur leading 2923 inside the ball's rifled to Edy and he's fouled as he tried to drive against Cooper well was it Walker no two shots excuse two shots for big Z here double bonus foul on Cooper is first foul well look if Michigan State doesn't have a good scattering report on Miles koven there's good reason miles didn't even play in the first game against Michigan State never saw the floor definitely been a guy where the minutes have been inconsistent certainly this season Edy makes that first foul shot Zach Edy now has 12 points Zack was stuck on 11 for a really long time it felt like Zach had 11 right points right out of the gate now he's up to 12 dribbling shooting and making Zack Edy with 13 The Bakers Dozen put who's up 3123 at the 207 Mark Credit to cvin though he was ready when his name was called and he's played well here in the first half guarding now Hollowman right side it goes to Malik Hall dribbling once right wing he'll hand it off to Jaden aens to Cooper now to Walker Walker snake dribbles his way to the free throw line stops because Zach Ed was waiting on him goes to Malik H lobbing for Cooper goes strong and scores mismatch there allowed the 611 Michigan State Cooper to get open for a layup it's 3125 that was good awareness there by Malik Hall could have gone to Walker who had the Zack match up or go inside to Cooper it was a good find cven faking a three right wing and then fouled he tried to drive in from the right wing and actually got busted in the forehead by Tyson Walker two fouls on Walker and Miles unfortunately a little bit slow to get up off of the deck here it was incidental contact but it still was a blow to the forehead for Miles koven so incidental or not it still hurts the same it was pretty impressive uh defense there by Tyson Walker actually he completely you know it's a tough long close out to an athletic guy like miles koven who can really shoot but also has that nice first step and Tyson Walker guessed correctly and slid to his left to cut off the drive of Miles who went right but unfortunately instead of being able to slide that way and kind of uh keep that separation defensively they banged heads and that was enough to get the foul first free throw miles coven has missed miles wears number five on the white uniform well miles has not had a lot of free throw opportunities this year he's with that Miss he's four of nine this year at the foul line 129 to go in a half Purdue leads by six cvin does dribble twice spins the ball between the hands and makes the second foul shot Five Points Off the Bench for Miles Cen Pur up 32-25 and Michigan State the ball here right to left as we're under a minute 25 to go half number one first game of four here today in minneap cvin almost stole the ball from Hollman but he's called for a foul three fouls on miles cvin miles looked right at the official Courtney green and said what that is not a good call I'm sorry no I agree that was not it was right in front of us Trey Hollman he he does a low rip right around the ankles and he just swings the ball right into miles coven's foot so if anything it it would be a kick violation potentially or something of that that nature but miles literally doesn't touch hman you know with his body it's just a foot to ball contact and it's a brutal two- shot foul in the double bonus on that call and hman sinks the first free throw Camden Heidi with two fouls replaces cven so freshman for freshman Cohen Carr speaking of freshman will Sub in for Michigan State 116 remaining we're in the first half Purdue 32 Michigan State 26 hman at the foul line sophomore from right here in Minneapolis averaging 5.7 points a game and with that made free throw he has four points in this game to make it Purdue 32 Michigan State 27 Tom ISO imploring his Spartans to play some defense here in the half court top of the key lawyer on a catch rightwing Gillis baking a three now ripping and going right Baseline cut off there by Malik Hall lobing again to Ed on the right block Mason relocates Ed Works one-on-one against Cooper and scores excellent Patience by Ed excellent floor spacing by Mason Gillis prods up 3427 with 48 seconds to go timeout Michigan State you're good at being you and Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance good at your insurance find an agent to help you or get a quote today at INF fb.com start with Indiana Farm Bureau insurance and stop knocking on wood I love your call there on the for spacing by Purdue you said said it with Mason Gillis he throws that entry pass his job is to get to that deep Corner try to provide that spacing if they want to double ball side off a gri shooter then you know it's an easy Kick Out Pass Mason to the corner Mason started to kind of cut through like he was going to go through the middle and then realized oh wait I'm supposed to go to the corner he does so it allows Zach that freedom and space to then go middle and Zach you know hasn't doesn't have as much success when he goes over that right shoulder with the left hand as he does the other way but great job there getting to a pretty deep position and his drop that Lefty hook hook over the top of Carson Cooper eight points in a game for Lance Jones I should mention that Lance is now a 1900 Point career scorer he needed one point coming into this game to equal 1,00 points he's now over that at 1907 now let's keep playing enough games where Lance can find his way to 2K okay I'd be all right with that Michigan State the ball they have 22 on a shot clock 45 on a game clock SP attacking the bucket to our left Walker working against Lance Jones trying to get him downhill and we'll have a charging foul on Tyson Walker his third foul of the game and all three fouls on Walker if I remember correctly were charging fouls that one taken by Lance Jones I do know this much Lance has taken all three of the charging fouls that have been called in this game for Purdue defensively Lance Jones man he he has that lateral foot speed that is the top 1 percentile of college basketball just has that ability to move his feet and stay in front as a one-on-one individual Defender he is by far pretty his best and you love his ability there to move his feet and get that contact in the chest from Tyson Walker to get that charge D catches on the left AR shot clock at 12 game clock at 18 Heidi top of the key to Edy to lawyer lawyer kick it to Heidi he wants to drive got to the rim was blocked there then picked up by Michigan State they do have 6 seconds on the clock Spartans are going to run and now we have what another charging foul taken by Lance Jones this one on Malik Hall could this be a first in the history of Purdue basketball one player Lance Jones has taken four charging fouls all in one half here in the first half Lance Jones has taken four charging fouls from Michigan State Purdue takes a timeout and by the way Carson Cooper after the that last block shot underneath the bucket for the Spartans exited the game with a towel on his face he was either poked in the nose or maybe the upper lip but he is bleeding profusely from the facial area Cooper leaves the game as Purdue takes a time out we going to have that side out of bounds now here right in front of us with 4 seconds left I couldn't tell if that play I think it might not have been a charge it might have been a moving screen on Malik Hall in as Lance Wasing the ball handler it was hard to tell as it happened so fast in front of us but either way Lance has hit the deck a number of times here in this first half and the call has gone against the Spartans so now with 4.3 H Purdue generate a quality shot here they got a seven-point lead you know a three ball here and all of a sudden you're up double digits going in half I don't care what you say I'm going to stick with my story Lance has taken four charges in the first half your story sounds a lot more fun and that has to be a Purdue record right do we keep track of that many takes one probably one of those stats that they didn't start keeping track of until more recently but it's amazing what he has done defensively and you think about how badly per needed him with Braden Smith in foul trouble most of this first half he's been phenomenal stepping up in a big way and honestly it's probably a good thing for this Purdue team to have to go through you know you hate to have BR Smith saddled but you know Purdue's been fortunate enough to play large chunks of this season where Bren Smith's been able to be afforded to be on the floor for a long time but you know we're getting ready to hopefully going on a a deep March run and you know there's obviously those chances where you run into a game where Lance Jones is going to have to play some point guard and it's nice for him to get a decent sample size here I'm going to test your memory that that game against Michigan State back on March the 2nd how many minutes did did Braden play in that game all 40 that's right well done he played all 40 never came out of the game well he is definitely not going to be hitting that number today he won't get to 40 today might not get to 20 at this rate okay what's Purdue going to do they have to go 3/4 of the court in 4.3 seconds they will throw it to Lance Jones on the run at midcourt left the right pushes off on Hollman shoots a three it was blocked partially blocked by Hollman Lance Jones wanted a foul quite frankly Lance probably should have been called for an offensive foul pushing off to get Space there is no foul called on either team and the first half has come to a close Purdue 34 Michigan State 27 as we have reached halftime here at the Target Center in the first quarterfinal game of the day of the perue and Michigan State learfield Purdue 34 Michigan State 27 interestingly enough 34 points is a exactly the number that Michigan State gave up in the first half yesterday to Minnesota Michigan state was trailing the Gophers 3432 at the halftime break yesterday but Michigan State came back to win with a strong second half performance a 7767 win over the Gophers we'll see if they can mount a comeback here against the boom makers in half number two rob Blackman and Bobby Rell Purdue in the first half was just one of five from the three point line Michigan state was just two of eight that equals the number of attempts Michigan state had for the entire game yesterday against Minnesota yesterday five of eight from the three-point line for the entire game against Minnesota today two of eight from the three-point line in the first half Purdue's only three-point bucket made by Lance Jones as he himself was one of two a real storyline in the first half is the fact that Braden Smith produced First Team all big 10 performer played only 9 minutes and 55 seconds because of two fouls he had early foul trouble he did dish out three assists however scored two points and uh picked up two rebounds Zack Edy had 15 points to help the boom maker cause he also added seven rebounds for the boom makers I'll give you all of the halftime numbers when we return to Minneapolis we're at the Target Center and will have the opening possession of half number two Purdue leads 3427 Purdue this season is 23 and one when leading in halftime just one time this year as Purdue had a halftime lead and lost the game that was you got a one in three chance of getting this right Ohio State Northwestern Purdue led by eight and Evanston and ended up losing in overtime yeah Northwestern they were fabulous that day certainly coming through with Big Time shot making and we saw Big Time shot making from them in both of the matchups against the Wildcats this year we did we hope if we see them in the semifinal maybe they'll miss a few maybe they'll miss a few shots brue starts the second half of Lance Jones Fletcher lawyer Zach Edy Trey Kaufman Ren Braden Smith who played only just under 10 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble he is on the floor here Michigan State's first possession Tyson Walker dribbling to the high right elbow guarded by Braden Smith uses screen from Cooper to shoot from 18 ft long off the back of the iron the ball is pinballed around a couple of times grab finally grabbed by FR cof Ren up Purdue Purdue with a seven-point lead with 30 seconds into the second half the winner will play the winner of Wisconsin and Northwestern that game is coming up here once our game goes final Smith bouncing to the inside to Ed shooting on the left-handed hook and store it Zack Ed the left-handed hook shot we don't often see that one but he scores it over Cooper Purdue leads 3627 how about big Z thriving with the left hand here two for his last two with the left ogard snake dribbles to the right block Ed Cuts him off now he dribbles him back out to the arc Edy stays with it hogard against Edy top of the key Walker he gave it up Walker against Braden Smith swiped Away by Braden Smith and stolen a steal by Braden Smith Purdue right to left in the white uniforms here Lance Jones wants to dribble to the right Baseline and does gets all the way to the rim and kicks in a corner to lawyer now to BR Smith a wide open three is on the way a triple time for Bron Smith Oh Bren Smith making plays on both ends the really good hands on the swi on the stripe or excuse me strip from Tyson Walker and then Fletcher lawyer nice extra pass to BR Smith at the Lance gets that thing going with driving the Baseline to get Michigan State caught in rotations Rue scores the first five of the second half the lead of 3927 for the boyu Tyson Walker chess pass left side Akens right back to Walker top of the key Ed on him will Walker try to size him up he will not throws in a corner for a three for Malik Hall air ball rebounded weak Side by Lance Jones Here Comes Purdue On The Run Lance tried to dribble into traffic lost the ball gets it back now to Edy now to Braden Smith right elbow rising and shooting it's short it's an air ball for Braden Smith Malik call with an airball at one end to Braden Smith at the other Michigan state will have the ball that was a frantic possession there for Purdue certainly you had Lance drones trying to little shake and bake in and out crossover dribble on the right wing to try to get to the rim but great defense by Michigan State moving their feet it becomes a loose ball fortunately puru comes up with it then you're thinking all right Bren Smith just hit a three maybe he's going to get into his mid-range package here and a nice late contest I will say by Carson Cooper and I think that did affect the shot cuz Bren was wellfully short on that wellfully short 1745 and now a foul away from the ball on whom Hoffman copy of that thank you first foul of the game on tkr crer not thrilled with that one a little too physical Courtney green felt like coff and ren there on the post defense on Malik Hall Malik Hall gives to hogard floater 12et good he got into the middle of the painted area and hogard with his first scoring of the game makes it Purdue 39 Michigan State 29 2 and A2 minutes expired here in the second half BR Smith off the screen from mey top of the key right to left picks up the dribble is in some trouble finds his teammate Lance Jones between the circles he's on a dribble to the right wing got a lawyer fakes a three bounces into to Trey Coffman Ren he sizes up hogard and misses and the tip end for Edie Edie tipped it in off the Miss from Trey Kaufman Ren hogard quickly the other direction underneath the basket he's trapped throws it out the hall Paul will dribble to the right block stops as Zack Edy meets him there kick it out for an Akens three no rebounded Edy got his hands on it lost it got it back Zack Edy now with a double double 19 points 10 rebounds what a makers are leading 4129 Ren Smith to the painted area layup blocked blocked by Malik Hall a run out to Walker it's a one-on-one for Walker givs it up to a teammate Akens who lays it in really good transition offense there for the Spartans Akens with a left-handed layup in it's Purdue 41 Michigan State 31 you set her out that was great and a smart play by Lance Jones just allowing Akens to lay that one in don't pick up a silly foul on an and one Purdue throws it inside to Trey Kaufman Ren who kicks it outside to Lance Jones he will shoot a three and Miss Long rebound into the far Corner gobbled up by aens of Michigan State 1615 remaining put by 10 at 41 31 hogar leaves it down low for a teammate threw it away tried to bounce past to Malik H and he bounced it out of bounds Baseline right Mason Gillis subbing in for the boom makers Jackson ker subbing in for the Spartans has his Xavier Booker and Trey Hollman 1608 to play in the game in Minneapolis Purdue 41 Michigan State 31 yesterday Michigan State erased a two-point halftime deficit one by 10 inside to Edy Edie on ker scores over the top of him a right-handed hook shot and you heard my partner Bobby Riddell say it accurately too easy there's just no resistance there you you got to be able to double him on the catch granted it's really hard when you throw from the top of the key that's why Purdue designs it Mason Gillis throws that pass from the top of the key and makes it hard to double but he's just scoring that thing all day long Poler at the top of the key dribbles once to the right wing gives a hogard hogard coming downhill kicking a corner for an Xavier Booker three it's no good long rebound out near midcourt handled by the Spartans reload here from Michigan State in their green uniforms poog guard 19 ft right elbow no rebounded kler lay up good offensive rebound Jackson kler he has four points and Purdue's lead is at 10 points well that's the only thing that's really been keeping Michigan State in this game at all is is offensive rebounding they now have eight of them Gillis inside to Ed here he goes against ker shoots and misses this time hog guard rebounds for Michigan State they're going to push Akens to the rim layup good a transition layup for Akens Michigan State with an eight at 43- 35 a transition in offensive rebounding that's literally keeping the Spartans in arms length here good call partner pry with the ball left wing Lance Jones outside of the arc between in the circles chest pass Bren Smith now handling inside the Edy on kou here comes a double team and on the double down the foul will go against Booker reaching in trying to double down on Ed time out on the floor Purdue 43 Michigan State 35 well we were talking about before the break that the second chance points and the fast break points were keeping the Spartans in this game and sure enough s Second Chance points 10 fast break points so 17 basically exactly half of their total of 35 points so really keeping them in this game Purdue up by eight Purdue is led by as many as 12 here in this second half 1427 remains Ed down low kicking out to Lance Jones for an open three it is short but rebounded by Braden Smith to Gillis will shoot a three from the left wing it is not short it is pure Mason Gillis his first scoring of the game with a triple time oh nice to see Gillis with a little triple time action and how about Purdue a taste of their own medicine with the second chance opportunity there 4635 Bo the makers spens the bowl now Lance Jones guarding AJ hogard left wing chess pass to Booker hands it right back to hogard as the shot clock is at 11 hogard who wears number 11 drives and kicks for a Hollowman three in the corner good the Min Minneapolis Trey hman a three-point bucket Purdue 46 Michigan state 38 he is the best three-point Marksman on this Michigan State team Braden Smith there if he could do that one over probably would stay more connected to that corner seven points for Hollman Gillis another three left wing this one is no good however in Hollman rebounds for the Spartans quickly down the left sideline it goes and it's dropped and bobbled by Carr stolen by lawyer lawyer was driving and fouled by Hollman that was just a mishandle on a reception by Carr he didn't look it into his hands he bobbled it taken away by lawyer lawyer in transition going the other direction is fouled and will this be two foul shots or out of bounds they're going to say out of bounds Baseline left as Camden Heidi the Minnesota native Subs in replacing Lance Jones for Purdue well that was a good aggressive move it's a one-on-one situation right there the other Defender fanned out with Braden Smith who was on the three-point line and Fletch Le gets the foul call brayen Smith free throw line fakes a jumper bounces it inside to Ed and a foul on the entry pass foul on ker is fourth is the ball was being bounced inside it'll be replaced by mty sasoko three team fouls on Michigan State and again Purdue will inbound Baseline left Purdue attacking the basket to our left as we look at it court side we are directly across from the Purdue bench into the Camden Heidi driving getting to the rim and laying it in what a take by Camden Heidi off of the inbound what a play a beautiful rip and go straight line drive by Camden Heidi and then using the athleticism for the soft finger roll over the front of the room Blue lead at 10 at the 13-minute Mark Walker throws in a corner to Xavier Booker that's the right corner back to Walker right wing now left wing to hman Hollman guarded by Heidi Minnesota kids guarding one another here hman to the rim draws the foul and makes the basket so one Minnesota kid takes advantage of the other bucket good for Hallman foul on Camden Heidi his third and now an and one opportunity here for Trey Hollman wow that's the second time a Michigan State offensive player as they've drive down the lane really has fired that shoulder into the defender chest of Purdue and this time hman got C Heidi right in the jaw and you know gets the benefit of the doubt though even though he initiates the contact gets that benefit of the doubt and gets the n one alman's free throw is good so he has 10 points making it Purdue 48 Michigan State 41 Spartans hanging tough as they did at macki Arena back on March thei brayen Smith right wing to Gillis top of the key lobs inside to Ed Edy fouled by Soko as the ball was being entered Tomo can't believe it foul on Soko his second that's one you wish they wouldn't have called a foul because Zach was about to catch it and dunk it he had pinned his Defender so far underneath the basket there's nothing Soko could do that just really buried him deep and and Tom ISO is going to be happy to see Zack Ed graduate that is for sure he's driving coach ISO crazy as is the rest of the Big 10 BW the ball 4841 12:30 to go B to maker seven-point lead Braden Smith will drive and what happened he traveled he stepped on someone's foot as he was driving I think he stepped on someone's foot and then began hobbling toward the basket and he is still down in the camera area where the photographer set on the Baseline Baseline left Braden was driving hard down the left side of the paint on a left-handed dribble and it appeared to me I have not seen a replay it certainly looked like he stepped on someone's foot maybe look to me as he tried to plant to jump up in the air his right knee gave out I'm hoping it's just like a hyperextension but there was was definitely something with the right knee so very concerning from a Purdue standpoint athletic trainer Chad young is going to go take a look as we take a Timeout on the university for working adults earn a degree you're proud of and employers respect start your comeback today at pug global.edu well a heart stopping moment for Purdue fans Braden Smith helped to the locker room after what looked to be some type of lower leg entury to the right leg it comes at the 1226 Mark of the ball game Purdue leading 4841 bradden Smith with five points in this game a first team all big 10 performer played limited minutes in the first half because of foul trouble and now is out of the game because of injury Purdue will play with Lance Jones and Camen Heidi BL your lawyer Mason Gillis and Zach Ed Braden had the injury scale air on senior night in Mackey when he rolled his ankle went back to the locker room and was able to return and finish it but here today he has to go back to locker room once again we will not speculate we can only tell you what we saw has it appeared live we'll do our best to keep you updated we're back to action Michigan State the ball sasoko for the Spartans to hogard he lost for Soko catches underneath the basket and dunks it home M Soko his first scoring of the ball game and the Spartans are right back in this one trailing Purdue 4843 Purdue right to left Lance Jones the point guard now with Braden Smith out with injury out High to Gillis right back inside he fires it to Edy Edy will Spin and shoot with the right hand and missing Soko rebounds for Michigan State and then Heidi tied him up Heidi reached in and tied him up on a held ball situation the possession arrow favors Purdue great active hands there by cam Heidi staying in that play to give Purdue another possession loyer inbounding Baseline left here Purdue with that extra opportunity thanks to the tie up from Heidi Gillis at the top of the key faking a three out a lawyer laer wants to dribble right side and lobs it inside to Edy to Heidi Heidi faking a three left wing and dribbling to the left block stops there throws it into lawyer lawyer shot blocked out of bounds Purdue keeps the ball Baseline left but with 2.9 on the shot clock just 2.9 on the shot clock for [Music] Purdue lawyer will trigger Qui hit here yeah quick hitter at 2.9 lawyer to Gillis catching shoot three in the corner air ball caught by Edy who couldn't make the reload however actually Zach caught the ball in a pretty good spot but couldn't make the layup at the other end Malik PA dunks it home and now the Spartans are on a run brue 48 Michigan State 45 11-minute Mark here in the ball game that transition offense so Elite there for the Spartans high right elbow catch for Edy to lawyer lawyer left wing it goes caught Now by Lance Jones Lance between the leg dribble left side Gillis lobs inside to Edy Edy back out to Gillis open three from the corner good Purdue needed that triple time desperately he really did huge hit there on the Inside Out action and now a foul on Heidi running back to play defense he bumped into hogard gden Heidi has four personal fouls 1032 remains in the game Purdue 51 Michigan State 45 Heidi will exit the game to be replaced by Miles culvin one freshman replaces another C Heidi they're just sprinting back side by side with hogard as we know hogard loves to push that thing hogard just bumps into Heidi's body in transition and gets that call 1025 to go in the game Michigan State trailed by 12 now they're only down six Tyson Walker rightwing guarded by lawyer goes Baseline leans in after pump faking shoots and misses and cvin rebounds for the bom makers off of the weak side good defensive possession there nice job by Fletcher lawyer he got caught up in the air but was able to maneuver his body just enough did not draw contact on Walker as he went his pullup Gillis top of the key gets for ED ED dribbles once wants to hand off the lawyer but lawyer was tripped by Hollman as he was trying to take that dribble hand off Hollman with a foul now Mason Gillis and Trey Hollman have words officials quickly step in between interesting confrontation there certainly and John back and forth between Zack Edy and Trey Hollman Earl Walton did go to the bench the scorers table I beg your pardon although it doesn't appear to be looking at a monitor oh we had that's why they went to the scores table Jaden Akens is hit with a technical foul for jawing after the fact and so is Purdue Zack Edy first foul on Edy second on Akens so Akens and Edy both technical fouls called against them for the little extracurricular after the initial foul that was committed by Hollman Purdue 51 Michigan State 45 with 955 to play front Court catch here for Lance Jones shot clock at 15 left side it goes to Gillis lobs high for ED catches turns shoots misses and a foul called on Michigan State's M Soko Michigan State fans are boisterous because they thought it should have been traveling not a foul instead the official whistles the foul Earl Walton the foul against Soko his third two foul shots here for Edy well from our angle live I feel like Michigan State might have a pretty good gripe on that one first foul shot for Zach is good and now a stoppage of play why Zach Edy making the foul shot Zach does have a double double in this ball game 62 career double doubles I don't know what they could be looking at but they have stopped play and sent both teams to their benches possibly looking at the clock clock right now reads 938 Purdue 52 Michigan State 45 but right now Purdue fans way more concerned about the health of First Team all big 10 performer Braden Smith than they are about the score here in this big 10 Tournament game really hoping our guy Braden is is okay he's getting looked at we presume by our great trainer Chad young looking after him in the Purdue locker room it was a timing issue and because the clock should not have read 938 it should have read 9:46 and that's where it is now 9 Minutes 46 seconds remaining quarterfinal game number one Purdue in Michigan State coming up next Wisconsin and Northwestern we Zack Ed dribbles once look back to action and misses the second foul shot rebounded by Malik Hall seven-point lead for the Spartans and the Spartans with it at the 940 Mark here hogard fouled on a Reach In by Miles kvin now cvin has four fouls br's running out of fouls to give it that position because Heidi with four fouls cvin with four fouls Caleb first will enter replacing Zack Ed at the 938 Mark Dice Walker front Court to Malik Hall back to Walker left side to sooko a catch on the arc to Akens rightwing hall now to hogard hogard snake dribbles to the right block shoots a floater at The Rim it is missed but Soko got the rebound and he missed a bunny got it back and then he's tied up with Caleb first held ball favoring pin uh I almost said Penn State Michigan State boy sasoko doing the Yan's work on the offensive glass here looked like Soko on his way up had it lost out of his hands a little bit his the staff was telling him dunk the basketball yeah right right don't try to lay it in michig can stay the ball now so Soo to Walker Tyson Walker kicked kick ball as he tried to roll the inside Caleb first got his left putot on it and Braden Smith by the way is coming back to the Purdue bench we do like to see that he's walking a little gingerly but he is walking under his own power having a quick chat with Matt Painter everybody just mesmerized trying to look for facial expressions yeah no one's even watching the game right now Purdue fanwise really any fan in the building they're all looking at Bren Smith and his his demeanor and trying to lip read the conversation he was having with Matt Painter now why do we have a stoppage of play again we didn't stop the game just to let Braden Smith walk back to the bench I know that well I see Elliot Bloom smiling over there talking to him so hopefully that's a good sign hey you'd love to win this game against Michigan State you'd love to win this big 10 tournament but there are bigger fish to fry for this the health of Bren Smith now has completely reared to the Forefront do his leading by seven at the 9113 Mark here's hogard between the circles chest bass right side Akens now it goes top side caught by Walker stolen stolen away Lance Jones just took his ball he did that to AJ hogard and Mackie Arena a couple times right there just slides his feet and beats Tyson Walker to the spot as Walker tries to go behind the back left or right literally just hands the ball to Lance Jones essentially great defense 850 to go in a game Fletcher laer bobbing for Caleb first off his fingertips tried to save it in bounds and quit it not a great pass not a great catch really both players at fault there perue turning it over giving it back to the Spartans with 843 to go in the game tough pass there by Fletch trying to get that thing over the top to Kaleb first but first is rolling having some contact with the defender not able to get that separation no guard off the screen from sasoko coming downhill against first first block it but'll be called goal tending Caleb first got up there to block it but it is goal tending giving AJ hogard four points and bringing Michigan State to within five at 5247 brayen Smith is going to sub back into the game are you kidding me wow and he will get a Heroes welcome from the Purdue fan I just have the biggest sigh of relief seeing this let's hope he is totally fine and is able to play through this with no issues cuz like you said before bigger fish to fry as far as Purdue and the rest of the season is concerned you know Michigan State's going to test him here they'll heat that ball up see if he is indeed at full string 825 to go in the game Braden Smith over the timeline right to left using a screen from Ed now a Gillis top of the key lobbing in Ed with Soko on him turned to shoot it missed it re founded out of bounds last Touch by Soko of Michigan State Purdue the balll 19 on the shot clock got a really good look there with big Z he felt like he was fouled on the shot attempt tell you what I think sasoko has done the best job of all of just being physical with Zach at both ends of the floor I would agree he's the veteran Statesman on this front court for the Spartans has played a lot of basketball and he's probably physically the most imposing as well Pur inbounding Baseline left lobbing for Ed catches at the free throw line gives to brayen Smith works his way right wing on a dribble with 810 to go in a ball game inside to Ed and a push in the back from sasoko on the entry pass sasoko now with four fouls that's bad news for the Spartans because he has been a very good interior defender on Edy but now with four fouls and Zach Edy to the foul line with a one and one with 808 to go in the ball game so many Spartan bigs dealing with some foul problems po has four as well Bou shot Ed long missed it long to soo rebound so Purdue missing the front end of a one and one Akens all the way driving missing tip in no tip out at a second time no picked up by Malik Hall kick it to Akens for a three it's long long rebound Soko out to Walker offensive rebounding right now keeping the Spartans in this ball game and a reach in on Braden Smith out on the perimeter three fouls on Braden Smith Timeout on the floor offensive rebounding for the Spartans A Difference Maker in this game perue 52 Michigan State 47 had 11 offensive rebounds Purdue's coaching staff not pleased with that they'll be even more displeased today Michigan State right now with 13 offensive rebounds ogard using a screen from Soko top of the key now coming down the left side of the paint stop it spinning shooting a right-handed hook shot and missing and Zack Edy gobbles up his 11th rebound Zack has 22 points 11 rebounds and a really good look there for hogard he does a good job not charging Lance Jones this time using his size to shoot over the top but that thing just rolls off the rim brayen Smith throws it inside Ed on the left block one-on-one and ahoko shoots smes it that ball hit the back of the rim and just dropped dead and then rolled into the basket that was not the smoothest jump hook of Zach's career but it's two points nonetheless call at the other end short jump for no good Mason Gillis rebounding into the hands of Braden Smith where at seven minutes to go Purdue leads by seven 5447 Purdue at the half had a seven-point lead of 30 4 27 left wing Braden Smith in a triple threat position dribbles to the top of the key now the Mason Gillis left corner it goes caught by Lance Jones to lawyer floater in and out no good and Edy was fouled on the rebound Edy was trying to trip it back into the bucket and he was pushed at the time at the attempt by Malik Paul is this a one and one or a two shot foul now what scared me there is Zach came up a little hobbled I think he stepped on someone's foot coming down awkwardly he's relacing his left left sneaker well if you'll remember that's the ankle he turned in the Wisconsin game and according to uh the people we talked to he did roll it pretty good and so I actually saw him shaking his left ankle out the previous timeout and as you said coming down there after that rebound attempt he's shaking the left ankle again I think it is a unfortunate just a bit Yeah I think you're right the more I look at him he is trying to work that thing out uh give work The Kinks out a little bit in that left Ang ankle good spot by you there broadcast partner thank you sir one and one for Edy missed it short well I thought that could have easily been called a two- shot foul I thought he was a tipping at the ball on the foul but regardless blue misses the front end of a one and one seven-point lead for the Border makers but Michigan State the ball at the 6 and 1/2 minute Mark rightwing Walker fakes a three from the right wing dribbles in kicks it left wing Hollman he fakes a three back to Walker Walker this time will pull the trigger he will Miss and it's rebounded by Zach Edy good look for Tyson Walker just couldn't get it to go down Purdue in their white uniforms here right to left come the BL makers heid he had it lost it turned it over to Michigan State stolen by Malik Hall Spartans quickly to Walker a three long transition jumper no sasoko tried to rebound and lost it out of bound sasoko jumped about 22 ft in the air to get that rebound what an athletic move by sasoko he just couldn't grab the ball cleanly that was a big time show of athleticism well how about this Rob Michigan State one of its last 11 from the field they just have had every opportunity here to try to come back as the ball's ticked out of bounds off Michigan State here pressuring here in the back court but Michigan State getting quality looks just not able to knock him down to get you know into tighten this game up Purdue leading 5447 Purdue bringing the ball up from the back court a little bit of token man-to-man pressure being shown here by the Spartans we're down to 550 55 to go Purdue up seven the winner of this game Advanced to tomorrow's semifinals for a 1 p.m. Eastern tip Gillis between the Rings and now a foul away from the ball Edy was posting got pushed to the ground by sissoko and they're going to look at the monitor again Edy gets up slowly he is uh he's using some Choice words here I think he felt like Soko on a hook and hold pulled him to the ground he's now he's shaking his other leg out so Zach definitely dealing with some lower body things here as he got tangled going to the ground previous play is under review for a possible hook and hold the Hokey pokei you put your right leg in your right leg out you shake it all about man no no kidding he's definitely been help me was a common foul called on the floor on sasoko it was okay okay so the uh the first item of business is sasoko is that te is that his fifth well I better double check that this game is getting a little wild here now we y five fouls yeah it was five fouls that's the 10th team foul it's going to be two shots but I just saw the replay above Zach's right leg was very close to getting caught in a compromising position underneath his body as he fell the ground he L was able to kind of get it out of there just enough to avoid Serious injury the ball was at the top of the key Ed was trying to post in front of the basket sooko just kind of leaned on him did kind of he did he leaned on him and that weight of Soko pulled down Edy there is no hook and hold it's simply a common foul but but it is the fifth team foul on sasoko and it is a two-shot opportunity for Zach Edy with this being 10 team fouls on the [Music] Spartans uh this has not been a real beautiful offensive performance by either team it's been stop and start missed shots not quite the Iowa Ohio State offensive explosion you had yesterday Edy with two foul shots first one no good Bo he's missed three in a row at the line Zach is a 72% foul shooter on the season Zach does have 24 points 12 rebounds but Purdue could really use these foul shots here in the final 544 second one he did make that one Zack will come out of the game replaced by Trey Kaufman Ren and again Zach is I wouldn't say he's hobbling that's not fair but he certainly doesn't look his gate is not is not 100% yeah it doesn't look like it's something that's necessarily affecting his play but it's he's definitely feeling it there's no question 539 remains Purdue up eight Spartans attacking Walker a three and the corner is good that's what Tyson Walker can do is third May three of the game he has 11 points just like that the Spartans within five at 55 to 50 with 520 remaining was well executed a backside flare by Malik call to get Walker into the corner as hogard came off the ball screen got the separation from Braden Smith Braden Smith works his way down the right side of the lane right side of the arc I should say now to the left side stops finds Gillis between the Rings right side lawyer he goes shot clock at five blue Rolls it into Trey coffin Ren he was fouled as he turned to spin on the Baseline fouled by Malik Hall foul four fouls on Malik Hall and two shots coming for Trey Kaufman Ren some big free throws here for tkr as Michigan state has got this thing down to five and and anybody's ball game at this point Purdue struggling at the line here late got to make some first foul shot no it was long Purdue is now 11 of 18 at the foul line couple of those have been front ends of one and ones blew up 5550 at the 503 Mark and right now the Border makers have Zach Edy on the bench getting a rest second foul shot yes Trey makes one of two first scoring of the game for Trey Kaufman Ren 56 50 Purdue at the 5minute Mark hogard over the timeline left to right for the Spartans using a screen from ker to the right elbow he goes now to Walker Walker down the left side of the paint charging in against Trey coffin Ren shooting and scoring some contact at the rim and Walker completes the layup to make it 5652 Purdue with 440 to play I think Purdue trying to give Edie a little break here to to get under the under four timeout let's see if they can get a big bucket here four four and a half remaining Gillis making a three top of the key to lawyer lawyer dribbles in now to Jones top of the key shot clock at seven Lance Jones shot clock at five now four Lance a deep deep three in and out no good rebounded by Xavier Booker of the Spartans quickly ahead it goes to hogard he's on the left wing Jones on him we're down to 47 remaining Purdue holding on to a four-point lead at 5652 under four minutes now to go hogard left elbow picks up that dribble the shot clock at 10 gives to Hollman right back to hogard shot clock at five hogard with a ball shooting 16 ft straight away it's long rebounded by Lance Jones ahead to BR Smith we down a 345 to play that was a good look for hogard just left it long he was straight away 18 ft just couldn't get it to go shot clock at 19 game clock at 335 puru leading by four trying to hold on against Michigan State Tre Coffman R catches top of the key dribbles once giv to lawyer now to Smith Bren Smith right elbow leans in through some contact but he's called for traveling there was contact with Hallman but before the contact the official Earl Walton calls traveling on Braden Smith and the clock stops Timeout on the State 52 and the Spartans will have the ball when we resume action that happens about 10 seconds from right now as we pause 10 seconds for station identification this is Bo maker basketball from learfield Michigan State the ball Baseline left in their green uniforms working left to right hogard will walk it up the floor guarded by produ Braden Smith uh beg you pardon Lance Jones prod playing with Braden Smith Lance Jones Zack Eden Mason Gillis and Fletcher lawyer h the point guard D of the key Tyson Walker back to hogard left corner back to Walker left wing we're at three minutes to go Walker wants to drive got to the rim and we will have a charging foul or a blocking foul a charging foul Lance Jones takes yet another charge to my count fifth time today he's taking a charge from a Michigan State Spartan and that's a Spartan turnover what a nice recognition there by Lance Jones sliding over to be able to take that charge great job 12th turnover of the game on Michigan State Purdue has committed nine turnovers Less Than 3 minutes remains Perdue 56 Michigan State 52 Perdue the number one seed the Spartans the eight seed inside Edy Edy spins on Cooper lost the ball stolen by Malik Hall a clean steal for the Spartans Here Comes Michigan State Walker will drive kicking a corner to Hollman Hollman drive to the right elbow and stops two 35 remaining Spartan basketball High left elbow catch for Hall trying to back down fut Loya works his way left Baseline leaves it down low for Cooper who dunks it home Carson Cooper a dunk and it's a two-point Purdue lead with 220 to go in a game that's a terrific find there by Malik Hall he's got that isolation on Fletcher warer pdue coming over really on that Baseline side to try to take away any post up and Carson Cooper with the separation from is able to find that pocket and Hall with a nice bounce pass Purdue 56 Michigan State 54 brayen Smith traveled yeah I saw that one happened right in front of us he was trying to Pivot on his left foot and he pulled that left foot ever so slightly and now Peru has 11 turnovers backto back turnovers on the botom makers I was just bragging on them taking care of the ball and they go back toback turnovers Michigan State can tie with a two take the lead with a three 15 remaining BS on their feet a near steal for lawyer he falls into the broadcast row to our right nearly taking out the BTN broadcast crew last Touch by lawyer 20 on the shot clock here from Michigan State 149 to go in the game Fletch getting out there in that passing Lane good anticipation gets the right hand in almost able to get that steal not quite nice and Walker between the circles snake dribbles to the Elbow Rises fires and scores and we have a tie game we're tied at 56 with 135 remaining Walker definitely a late game killer has that ability to score from all three levels lawyer lobs inside to Edy Edy out to Jones now to Braden Smith Corner for lawyer catch and shoot three good a triple time 12 turnovers for the Spartans 11 for the boom makers Michigan State 13 offensive rebounds Purdue 12 Michigan state is outrebounded Purdue 363 5 that's significant br's only been outrebounded one time this year in a game 114 to go Michigan State inbounding from right near their bench area on the far sideline Purdue enjoying a three-point lead thanks to a Fletcher lawyer three-point shot from the left corner a moment ago Walker off the screen from Booker goes to the right elbow gives to Booker pick and pop three in and out no good rebounded Brady Smith then taken away from him by Mason G hooker the Indianapolis kid had a wide openen three and that thing did everything except going in the basket it was a well-designed play a little pick and pop spread the floor he had all the Time in the World to line that three up but fortunately just a tad short rims off and Purdue in good shape here to potentially put this thing a two- possession game got clock at eight game clock at 40 Pur better hurry now throwing it inside to Edy he drops steps and scores drop stepping pass Booker for the layup quickly ahead Here Comes Michigan State walk on the right wing we're down to 30 seconds to go in the game hogart spins at The Rim go strong and we will have a blocking foul on Mason Gillis stopping the clock at 27.8 remaining couple of quick thoughts here I want from you here Bob Rell really one thought running the offensive play for Xavier Booker smart by Michigan State on a pick and pop the problem was when you went to the other end defensively he just simply can't guard Zack Ed so you're making it easy for puru at the other end it was a major gamble for sure they were hoping to get the three ties the game and he got a great look but then like to your point it was just a complete mismatch they tried to bring a late double as hogard makes the first free throw rims it in but Zach was able to split it the double didn't come quick enough and Zach splits that double and to your point Booker's like underneath the basket when Zach's laying it in 6157 the hog guard free throw could make the lead trim the lead I should say to three points for Purdue and one would think Michigan State's going to foul now have to and way produce struggled at the foul line certainly uh that could work to the Spartans favor hogard made the second foul shot six points for hogard timeout Michigan State one timeout remaining for the Spartans Purdue is in the double bonus should they be fouled right now Purdue 61 Michigan State 58 27.8 to play the possession arrow does favor Purdue boy you just think about the the cat and mouse the strategy the inner workings of the game of basketball and you said it it's the risk you ran if you were Tom ISO I'm going to get Xavier Booker in a pick and pop which is advantageous for me against Edie offensively but man at the other end you're dead to rights when Edie catches it down low because Booker is just not strong enough to guard him and then the other piece of it is if the ball goes in you tie the game you can you can uh take they two time outs one sure and then you can go offense for defense you got a tie game offense for defense now you got a better defense on the floor Flor you're feeling really good but when you miss you don't have the ability to call that timeout and now you get stuck with that bit bad matchup I mean he guarded Zack for two possessions in MA the arena Zach had a jam and then the easiest layup you'll ever see where he just puts Xavier Booker in the basket so there was a you know small sample size but the sample size was extremely Fable for Purdue as far as Zach having flourishing of those opportunities and sure enough he gets that one chance here against a Booker and it's an easy lay and credit to perue for being smart enough to hey we have the advantage now offensively let's throw it into big Z and let him go to work this game is far from over however 27.8 remaining Purdue will have to get the ball inbounded from the far right Baseline take care of that ball and if you get fouled win and if you get fouled be ready to step up and make some foul shots this is going to be huge how do you handle this full court pressure to try to get the ball in bounds Lance Jones will be the in no no uh they got a little alignment here where Lance and Mason Mason will be inbounding it but Lance starting out of bounds as well Purdue can't throw the ball along the Baseline if they choose they do they throw it to Lance and then throws the fure along the Baseline and he throws it right back to Lance who stepped in bounds and the foul immediately so how about that P threw it out of bounds along the Baseline not once but twice and then the second man that caught it stepped inbounds to catch the pass to put the uh ball into play Lance Jones fouled by AJ AJ hogard his third and it's two foul shots for Lance Jones at this point you're just happy getting the ball in and getting fouled right you can't have a turnover there but you know Lance's probably not the perfect guy Purdue would choose to shoot the free throws first foul shot is no good oh it trickled off the front of the rim I will say this if you're just looking at Big 10 games only Lance has been an 82% foul shooter that's that's big 10 games only but now this is the big one yep CU this can put it at two possessions boy I'm not sure how that first one did I mean hung on the rim there oh that had the fans a little nervous on both sides for a split second second foul shot good nine points for Lance put's up four long way to go 26 seconds remaining hogard quickly into the front Court the hall coming downhill at The Rim dunks it 19.7 timeout Michigan State well there was no resistance at The Rim because Mason Gillis was not going to risk fouling and giving Malik Hall an and one they just give him just gives him the dunk to make it 62-60 19.7 to play now Michigan state is out of timeouts that's a big final time out there as you get into these late game scenarios to be able to stop the clock maybe draw something up but they're going to try to set their defense here and get one final full court press opportunity and then Purdue if they can get that thing in bounds they will likely maybe one trap and a potential foul and then Purdue is going to have two shots to ice potentially ice the game or if they only hit one Michigan State can tie with a three or of course if Purdue misses both Michigan state would have that chance to tie with a two or take the lead with a three let's see what type of inbounding play Purdue tries this time at 19.7 remaining you ideally could try to you know Lance Jones as you pointed out in Big T play has been a quality free throw shooter and has been solid all year long but ideally if you're PR you can get this thing to Mason Gillis Braden Smith or Fletcher lawyer those guys who are you know a little bit higher percentage at the line a little bit more of a conventional inbounding now lawyer is the only man standing out of bounds the ball will be handed to him the other four boil makers standing near midcourt now beginning to screen and cut lawyer lobs for e fouled from behind by Cohen Carr Cohen Carr is such a great athlete he tried to jump over the back of Edy and block that pass and Ed at 74 that's not easy to do but Carr almost did it his vertical leap is something to see Ed goes to the line with two foul shots clock is at zero game over let's go home everyone 19 seconds magically come off the clock a clock malfunction I ain't mad about it let's just call it right here ah now they'll put it at 19.4 so 3/10 of a second expiring and Edy at the line with two foul shots 27 in the game for Edy make it 28 that is a huge hit there by Zack Ed had that little struggle there midc half where he missed three in a row but has been able to find the range here late and this is the key one to try to put it back to two possessions right now it's 6360 Purdue 19.4 remaining Ed dribbles once bending the knees shooting and hitting nothing but net 6460 into hogard he's going to race over the timeline left to right Michigan state had of timeouts to Malik Hall to Walker Walker a contested three that's going to be an air ball grabbed by Malik Hall he falls down and loses it Lance Jones grabs it and a foul on hogard we're down to 8.7 remaining and the Peru fans are rising to their feet as Lance Jones is holding the ball in the left hand and holding his right Hand high to the sky in encouraging the cheers from the Peru faithful and unfortunate here it looks like Malik Hall rolled his left ankle at the very end of that play trying to get that rebound on Tyson Walker's really Wayward shot we had a good angle at it Bren Smith a nice contest Walker tried to rise up really quickly and shoot a three and it just came way left off of his hand left of the rim and unfortunately Hall rolls his ankle which you hate to see that here late in this game when the outcome was pretty much decided once the boilers had recovered that ball 8.7 8.7 to go now Lance does need to make a couple free throws here this baby a't is not on Ice just yet we've opened up the cooler but we have to put it on ice here Lance Jones will have two foul shots good news is n missed it missed the foul I was going to say the good news for Malik H he stays in the game well now he's now he will exit Welly you hope that guy is okay I'll tell you there's not another player in the Big 10 that our coaches have more respect for than PA they speak so highly of him they recruited him very heavily and really impressed with him as a Young Man Lance made the second toot puru is up 6560 8.7 remaining hogard quickly all the way to the rim puru is going to let him go unabated layup good Purdue needs to get the ball in bounds here time out Purdue cletcher couldn't get it in 4.2 remaining Purdue leading 6562 they did not change the score on the score they should have Purdue 65 Michigan State 62 again this game is not over we still have four and 210 remaining and Purdue is going to have to get the ball in bounds now one thing I noticed standing wide open in front of Fletcher was Zack Ed and Fletch did not throw it to him I'm not sure I'd like to say he didn't see him but at 74 300 lb I'm not sure how you didn't see he just had to throw it up but maybe he was he was sliding back and forth back there cuz he's allowed to move he might have been worried if you threw it up it would catch part of the backboard I suppose uh but he easily just could have lobed it over the top to Z um what I also noticed was Fletch when he first got it he could have easily pitched into Lance Jones right right but Braden Smith I think Bren Smith thought like at the end of the first half the clock would run and and since it's less than 5 seconds he could just hold it into the clock right well in the second half yeah that clock stops under a minute clock stops under a minute and so unfortunately that little hesitation there uh then allow Michigan State's press breaker to get set up and start denying the Purdue individual so we now have to go through this process again this time Lance Jones inbounding puru has four players in a line now puru throws it out of bounds to lawyer throws it in Gillis quickly fouled coming in quickly from behind it was Jaden Akens fouling Mason Gillis with 3.9 3.9 on the clock now look if Mason misses both foul shots oh yeah Michigan state will have a chance here they've got some guys that can throw it in from deep and with 3.9 that's a lot of time Mason at the foul line he has six points in the game Mason this year has only missed four foul shots in Big 10 competition he dribbles once the senior from Newcastle hits it cly Bob thought I was going to jinx him I wouldn't do that to my guy Mason Gillis the Sixth Man of the Year in the Big 10 announced earlier this week wearing number zero on the white uniform Mason Gillis Big 10 honorable mention this week as well made them both that should put the finishing touches on this one hogard quickly to the rim layup I don't know if they'll count it or not it won't matter Purdue advances to the semifinals of the Big 10 tournament Purdue wins the game 6762 I think unless they count hog guard's bucket at the at the horn that would make it 6764 they will count the basket they will count the baset BK Purdue in 6764 6764 the bua makers winners over the Michigan State Spartan cre improves to 29 and3 on the season and now moves on to semi-final action of the Big 10 tournament the bua makers will await the winner of the second game of the afternoon which is Wisconsin taking on Northwestern Purdue 67 Michigan State 64 that is the final what a makers led by as many as 12 what a makers led by as many as 12 in the second half Michigan State came all the way back to tie the game at 56 but Purdue is able to hold on for the victory let's visit with assistant coach Terry Johnson he's kind enough to join us after skipping the regular season finale against Wisconsin that's a whole another story we'll save for another day yeah that take some time that story assistant coach Johnson's comments brought to you by Saab keeping people and Society safe man this game had all kinds of emotional twists and turns Terry as you well know brue got off to the great start early in this game despite the fact Braden Smith had the two early fouls and didn't play much then the scare with a knee injury to Braden early in the second half you have a 12 point lead extinguished the game is tied late at 56 but in the end you find a way to win and I would say this Coach Johnson your thoughts on this the fact that your team found a way to win in a pretty unique situation we haven't had a lot of grind them out games this year today was one of those and that's good for us especially in March uh being able to grind out way get a win no matter what cuz you get to move on to the next day uh and our guys we had guys great contribution from other guys off the bench early which helped uh and getting those guys give those guys getting a chance getting new guys coming off the bench give them a chance to play an environment like this is what's good for us well coach it gets tied up there late and Fletcher lawyer ends up hitting a huge three-pointer in the left corner just talk about his ability to hit huge shots he's done it throughout his whole career late gam Fletch is a confident player as we all know it doesn't matter he could be 0 for a or whatever that next shot he thinks he's going in and and and and for the most part it has been and Zebo Trust him and he threw it right back out to him and we just say play the right way if you getting double team pass it to the open guy and we expect that guy to step up and knock the shot in you mentioned Zebo Zack Edy his numbers today 29 Points 12 rebounds four assists and Coach only two turnovers and he was had that ball in his hands a lot today against a really physical defense yeah that's good like the two turnovers is huge yeah like he understand when the double team was coming and when they was one-onone he took it took it right to the basket and or he just passed it out so it was good and it was our guys going to be more ready to shoot you know you coming in new environment you got to be shot ready and then get the fill for the new ball so I think all in all our guys did a great job well coach from a defensive standpoint once again a pretty impressive defensive performance against these Spartans they're just four of 18 from three overall but the job once again on Tyson Walker he shot 33% from the field the first time sure enough does it again Braden Smith you know we talked about it last time did a pretty good job on Tyson Walker he obviously got some help from some of his buddies here today on Tyson but mean you know that guy's such an explosive score averaging 18 points a game just talk about your guys's ability to you know do a good job on him defensively well you hit the nil oner 18 points a game going to get your guys attention right away and and bradon's been up and excited since his freshman year about that match up him just Garden Walker and uh everybody did a great job on him we want to make sure we made him take tough shots he got away in transition a couple of times little easy bu basket but we wanted to make it tough on me all night and we did a great job and um we get to move move on let us share one story with you coach Johnson before we cut you loose the Braden Smith injury early in the second half the only coach from our team that left the bench to go back in the locker room and check on him was you and when you re-entered the court Bob and I and every Purdue fan in this building was laser focused on your demeanor yeah because we were trying to read your body language right but you did a great job of hiding it brother because I wasn't sure what was going on with BR what if you don't mind saying it if you can't tell us it is fine but what did you find out when you were back there did Bren say hey I'm good to go I'll be back uh he was back there getting it loose and just checking it out it was his need but we don't know exactly to what extent it was but like he was just running around and checking the Chad making it was strong make sure it was strong enough if he wanted to come back it's going to be hard it was hard to keep him off the floor yeah I wanted him to stay off like come on but like but he's a competitor and uh he did a good job and and then he just wasn't ready to trust it right away well it looked like it looked like early when he came back he was little iffy but by the end of the game back to normal yeah my trainer and doc said it was strong enough and he just trusted him sure well Coach Johnson well done uh we will see you again tomorrow here against either Wisconsin or uh or Northwestern all right time for prep work yes sir yeah get to work coach Terry Johnson his postgame comments presented by Saab keeping people and Society safe by the way there was a scoring change they have they have taken the layoff off the board from hogard at the buzzer and so that shot does not count the official final score will be Purdue 67 Michigan State 62 more in a moment this is bomaker basketball on the Purdue Global Sports
