of clubs looking for you um were you always going to join Spurs or God forbid could there have been another club for you see I just say a lot of clubs uh came in for me and wolves were a very good side at the time they they came in uh Chelsea were interested the Arsenal they were they were interested Spurs supposed be Shak in their heads could you consider Cliff I did briefly uh but of course Totten came along and uh uh yes uh that was um who of course I eventually sign for and it was just the greatest move that uh I ever did just to let people know um what this what kind of Move This was um Cliff moved to you moved to uh Tottenham for the princely sum of £335,000 which would buy you a decent family car now um it was a a British record transfer between two British clubs and a world record fee for a left Winger so it was a big deal were you aware there was a big deal yes I was very aware it was a big deal but personally not a big deal for me because I got very little out of it I just got a £250 signing on Fe that was it um and just to add to the because they say uh without wishing to exaggerate everything about your career as a fairy tale um you make your debut uh Force SPS at Arsenal at Arsenal about that you know and and of course that at that time I still do my national service and uh and so b n told me to arrive at hyri at at uh an hour before the kickoff and I got there and uh when I did eventually get to the marbled Halls of of hria the big commissioner on the on the door wouldn't let me in because he didn't recognize me and I had to send a message in Bill didn't have a particularly good World Cup I give it 100% but um the Wales we we covered ourselves in glory um uh out out in Sweden but I didn't have a particularly um good World Cup as as I would hoped it would have been and was expected from me uh so yes my first um few months as as a Tottenham player weren't weren't all that very good okay well we I'd like to talk about the World Cup CU it's another one of those things that uh marks out as a special footballer um you in that famous whales team that did so well in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden however the qualification is one of the most complicated and weird stories in the history of football let's just talk about you were in a group um with Czechoslovakia and East Germany um it was a three- te group and uh you did okay you won two and lost two and what do you remember about those qualification games I have to be honest I don't remember a great deal about them that sort of we went out there and uh we always give it 100% of course uh some of the our displays had been quite good and I think we finished in a a reasonable position uh well and that's about all I know it was a reasonable position because I say you you you'd uh you won and lost against czechslovakia and you won and lost the home games you won the way games you lost it wasn't enough to qualify um and just for the people listening because it's an incredible story um there was then turmoil in the Middle East um Indonesia and turkey withdrew from the Asia and African qualifiers that's how it worked in those days because they didn't want to play against Israel um and so Israel hadn't played a match and they said we must go through to the World Cup in Sweden and FIFA decided it would be completely mad for a team that hadn't played any games at all to go through to the World Cup so what they did was the teams who had finished second I think was it yeah in those qualifying groups they put them all in the Hat in the European teams and well as a member of the coaching staff has been set off in the end for Bournemouth and W now have an opportunity just outside the penalty area and sub men has a fing of goal comes up a Newcastle United body and Newcastle coming forwards now we played seven minutes I've added our time now at the end of the 90 when uh we're only really due to play Four initially of course it's going to be a free kick now for
