now final score with Nick Walters on Fox 16. well it was another Wild Weekend of college football we had some surprise scores near upsets 61-yard game-winning field goals and in Arkansas some teams enjoyed a winning Saturday unfortunately the Razorbacks wouldn't be one of them let's jump right into the highlights from a game that at the beginning looked promising for the Hogs it's Arkansas trying to stay unbeaten the Razorbacks hosting BYU and jumping out to a lead on the opening drive AJ Green scampering down the sideline for six seven nothing Arkansas and after the Cougars Drive stalls a punt to Isaiah centenia in the Homegrown hog has wheels Centennial with the track speed that broke State records taking this one to the house for his first score as a Razorback BYU Strikes Back taking a 21-14 lead until KJ Jefferson connects with Luke Hass it's the freshman's first score as a hog Arkansas with a three-point lead at half and they extend it in the third AJ Green punches it in but that's the last scoring Arkansas has in this one BYU rallies ahead and goes on to win 38-31 the Hogs failing to score on their final drives Arkansas being handed their first loss on the year before starting SEC play at LSU next week Sam Pittman knows his team has things to clean up before going to Death Valley they took care of the ball a little bit better than us and they certainly were better in the penalty area and and I want to give them credit they played a good football game and and we've got a lot of things to clean up and they exposed us a little bit in with their pass rush and not necessarily bringing extra just with their ends and certainly the penalties we've got to get a handle on that we tried to get things going again and we got a little bit of a Tempo but we just kept making it was just too many mistakes on our end of the ball I mean like AJ said I feel like we made a lot of mistakes and you know football stuff isn't always going to go your way and today just didn't go our way you know they capitalized our mistakes and you know for that meanwhile over in Jonesboro Butch Jones and the red wolves look to right the ship and get their first win on the year a state takes the early lead over Stony Brook and wouldn't look back Fordyce native jacquez cross totes at 66 yards for the score a state rolls to a 31-7 win moving to one and two on the year next up they're back at home against Southern Miss okay over in Pine Bluff on Saturday we had golden lions taking on Golden Bears uapb looks for their first win in a home debut against Miles College we were there for the highlights it's not just the home opener at uapb but it kicks off a new era Alonso Hampton making his home debut as golden Lions head coach Pine Bluff making coach happy early on on their first drive Jalen Macon rolls out fires hitting Claude Coleman in the corner of the end zone the Lions Roar to a 7-0 lead miles going for it on a fourth down and they'd be denied the drop forcing a turnover on Downs After penalties drove them back uapb has it on a third down and a mile Makai Hagan throwing on the Run finding Kenji Lewis who puts a defender on skates cutting back and watch out it's a foot race and nobody's catching Lewis The Golden Lion leaves the Bears in the dust and just like that it's PB up 14-nothing Pine Bluff faithful loves what they're seeing and through the first half the Lions defense locks things down kendarius Clark is there for the sack still 14-0 late in the second and here comes the pass rush Khalil Arnold knocks the ball out bear crawls and jumps on the Bears fumble a heads up hustle play as uapb ends up hitting halftime with that same 14-0 lead thank you now miles would make this one competitive in the second half but uapb holds on in the end to win 21-20 Alonso Hampton is victorious in his first home game as head coach the golden lines are back on the road next week at Alabama a m but not the same kind of luck for UCA coming up short on their Road Trip the Bears visited FCS Powerhouse North Dakota State on Saturday and lost 49-31 UCA Falls to one and two on the year they're back on the stripes next week against Abilene Christian okay that's a wrap on your D1 college football scores after the break let's talk some high school football we're going to have highlights from a thriller between Benton and Catholic and will bring in Dudley Dawson for his breakdown you're watching final score on Fox 16. well most high school teams are now hitting conference play and we already had a showdown in 6A East Little Rock Catholic was first place last year Benton was second on Friday night the Panthers and Rockets went toe-to-toe in a game that can impact playoffs come November well this is what you call a consequential 6A East matchup last year Catholic handed Benton their only conference loss on the year and the rockets would stay unbeaten for a conference title so who would take one big step towards a 6A East crown Razorbacks commit Braylon Russell back in Action tonight after a high ankles brain kept the Benton running back out since the salt Bowl but he'd be the rockets that lift off from the get-go Jackson England Lofts it up for Cody fogelman who shoved out of bounds and this thing turns into a track meet early on England lets it Fly for the End Zone Thomas Duke mosses the defender staying in bounds for the touchdown snag Catholic up 7-0 and after the Panthers opening drive stalls England drops back and floats it for the sideline Brooks Ward is under it stopping on a dime and making a man miss cutting it back to the hashes it's a race to the goal line and the rocket hits turbo it's a Catholic house call making it a 14-0 lead later in the first Ben has an answer Drew Davis hits Maddox Davis the panther with room to roam and he hits the Juke button accelerates to the end zone and extends touchdown Benton that cuts the Panthers deficit seven and in the second Braylon Russell with the tough running moving the chains on the goal line Davis looking for points shooting an end to his man Maddox Davis for another score what a response from Benton it's 14 all two minutes before half fourth down for the rockets and they go for it England heaves and Brooks Ward is on the other end of it for six Catholic jumps back ahead 21-14 but the Panthers won't just run this into the break Davis has Elias Payne down the middle two rockets Miss and it's a foot race Payne going going and he's finally chased down at the 10. Ben Cashes in on the big game Drew Davis tosses it up and over to who else but Maddox Davis it's the third touchdown strike between these two this half as the Panthers and Rockets hit halftime tied at 21 a piece in the second half this game would turn into a total Shootout scores teeter-tottering back and forth but with two minutes to go Benton would have the last laugh tied at 42 the Panthers pick up a first down and Braylon Russell would finish things off hammering into the end zone as the Panthers take the lead and Catholic would not answer in the final minutes as Ben holds on and takes a thriller 49-42 to take a big step towards a conference title so we saw Benton's game-winning drive but I wish we could see highlights from the rest of that second half this game was just jam-packed of great plays but let's bring in our fearless Rider Dudley Dawson for his takeaways what a win from Benton what do you make of the Panthers well the obviously this is a big early season Showdown it's the kind of game you see at the end of the season for a conference title but this could decide it you know right off the bat here big win for Ben getting Braylon will wrestle back is not only probably big for them physically but also emotionally and mentally uh and you they played a really good football team Little Rock catholic's not going to go away you had a great season last year as you mentioned they feel very good about their future this year so yeah I think a huge win and you know it was on a Friday night when there were a lot of a lot of offense around the state the defense has had some trouble uh this Friday night yeah Catholic definitely definitely did a good job on Friday night we saw guys like Brooks ward make play after play after play last season of course the Rockets went all the way to the 6A semifinals until they lost a plastic Academy when we look at the 6A landscape right now how do we see Benton fitting in against these 6A West teams like the Green Woods and PAs you know Greenwood has looked really really good so far I don't know that they've played the toughest competition uh that's about to pick up a little bit but certainly Kane Archer and uh cash Archer the two Archer brothers who played there have been really good LJ Robbins they've got so many so much talent that they're going to be one of the the teams there at the end of State you know we've talked about Pulaski Academy uh you know they they're gonna get it going uh you know I think they'll be it there at the end but right now you can't count betting out and certainly I would do you can't Little Rock Catholic out either it's it's a pretty wide open wide open race it always helps to have a kid like Braylon Russell on your team the future hog how exciting is it just to see Braille and healthy back on the field one of the best high school football players in Arkansas that's class of 2024 as he tries to finish out his high school career with a State title you know I don't really root for high school teams or college teams but I do root for high school kids and college kids the you want to see them out there this is what they work all summer for what they work in the off season for uh you know getting the injury right off the bat certainly was big in their ballgame who knows how that first game with Brian would have turned out if he'd have stayed healthy uh but you know getting him back out there on the field I know the Arkansas coaches were glad to see it uh you know want to have him is in Prime shape as it can be and I'm certainly glad it's I'm certainly serious head coach was glad to see him back out there out there it just is he's just an athlete and I don't get you there physically like I said but emotionally and mentally helps you play as well yeah big win for Benton we'll see how the 6A East shakes out all right after the break we're going to take a look at other highlights from Friday night plus we hear from whitehall's head coach on how his Bulldogs have started three and one on the year and are winning for Ryan Mallett you're watching final score on Fox 16. well no team on any level should have to face the challenge that Whitehall is this season head coach in Razorbacks quarterback great Ryan Mallett tragically passed away over the summer drowning on a beach in Florida now the Bulldogs are three in one coming off a 28-21 win over BB Gary Burton Jr caught up with whitehall's new head coach Jason Mitchell who has worked closely with Mallet since last season you know uh you know I mentioned this last week I was talking to somebody you know and having coach them out look down on us and uh knowing that his mom's in the stands and I talked to her again tonight she's driving down from Farmington three weeks in a row to watch and to notice she's up there and cheering these boys on and they know it and uh you know they want to be successful and Coach Mallard had big plans for us this year and uh you know he he wanted to make the playoffs and he wanted to make a Deep Run and they know that and they expect that of themselves like coaches that we don't have to say much to him they work their butts off so you know I just try to be myself Gary um just try to be who I am be myself being lead them in the right direction uh let them know that we're here for him and uh but you know you also got to keep your thumb man because they don't break the high school kids and just just trying to fill that role and it's you know I'm a little different than coach mallard and more horses than I am but uh but just just making sure that they're no they know that we're there for him as long as the kids are playing hard like they are and fighting they're good what an incredible storyline this year in Arkansas high school football thus far an inspiring one as the Bulldogs play for Ryan Mallett let's bring in our fearless Rider Dudley Dawson to get his thoughts so far on Whitehall starting three and one very inspiring story big win for them this weekend Jason Mitchell doing a great job of taking over and and trying to get things done you know you look at these things and and not only did they lose Ryan who was a good friend of mine uh he had been up here just a few days before the drowning for a seven on seven tournament they were really looking forward to the season uh Jaden Smith 250 yards rushing on Friday night uh you know kind of an emotional leader for them a bunch of those guys came up here for Ryan's funerals it's very sad but you could see he had made a difference in their lives not only on the field but off the field and you just got to give them so much credit for not only fighting through the tragedy of losing Ryan to losing some classmates as well yeah a big round of applause so far for the job that Jason Mitchell has done with this Whitehall program losing the head coach in the off season and still being three and one to start the year but Switching gears and checking in on a top 10 team last week we saw Parkview knock off number one Bryant now ranked number two in the state the Patriots had another 7-a matchup on Friday night facing north Little Rock in this so-called Metro Bowl Gary Burton was a war memorial for the highlights if you take a look at the 2023 hootens Arkansas football magazine on the front cover it reads all roads to Little Rock go through Parkview not only is War Memorial Stadium the place where the state championship games are held but it's the Parkview Patriots home turf and on top of not having someone come in and take a win from them they have revenge on their mind especially against North Little Rock because last year North Little Rock beat them by one point let's see if history repeated itself on the second play of the game the charging Wildcats strike Tyson Braden hits Jace white on the slat round and he's gone no need to look back he's just looking up at the Jumbotron watching himself try to enter six that's definitely not to start the defense of the 5A state champions wanted to have but the offense picks up the slack Cameron settles ties it up on the kickoff for Parkview I lose the ball in the air but on the ground they find it for me they get on top of it and they tell their offense on the sideline get back out here let's do it again that drive ended with the field goal for the Patriots but on their next drive it ends with a touchdown there's Cameron settles again 17-7 to end the first North Little Rock forced to punt Parkview takes over inside their own 10 and quarterback Eric McGee says I want a touchdown too so he finds Omarion Robinson and look at that stride the Patriots looking very patriotic right now let me remind you that North Little Rock won this game last year so Parkview they're on their revenge tour as you can tell by the sign and you can tell by their play the Patriots they recover their second kickoff of the game and converting on Fourth and 20 on a fake punt they find themselves fourth and one on the one quarterback Eric McGee takes it from shotgun he surveys he scrambles don't know where to go but now he does he finds monterio Elston to put the Park View Patriots up 31-14 at halftime the bleeding just didn't stop for North Little Rock the Final in this one Parkview 52 North Little Rock 14. coming up next for the charging Wildcats they got a date with Central and Parkview they got a good one against Hot Springs can't wait for that at War Memorial Stadium I'm Gary Burton Jr Fearless Friday all right let's bring back in Dudley Dawson for his thoughts on these Patriots so last week Parkview shocks the state with that win over Bryant and then they back it right up with a dominant win over North Little Rock yeah Brad voting and his staff have done a really good job obviously you got the State title last year and then they went out and got a few more coaches added to the staff and I think we could see that you know the products of that staff he makes a big deal about how his coaches are able to be over there and teach at Parkview and thus be able to be around the kids all day they don't get late to practice that happens in some Little Rock situation that staff has done a great job so far and it looks like they are well on their way to having a tremendous chance to win it again not to mention they have great players and guys that are making big plays and they filled in a lot of holes they lost some gas but have found guys that have stepped up and been able to come through and collect situations season two of the better teams in 5A we'll see if they make it back to War Memorial in December let's go ahead and hit another score from Friday night the hot springs Trojans remain Undefeated by edging Little Rock Southwest 26 to 25 your thoughts Gotta Give both coaches credit uh Daryl Patton is is turning at Little Rock Southwest around he's done a really good job I know it's been tough over there but his numbers look good now and certainly he had hot springs on the ropes the other night but a big onside kick a touchdown and hot springs was able to pull it out uh Daryl Barnett is really revitalized that program and you can tell that they're going to be right there with the other teams that we mentioned earlier in the show uh when the end comes along they they have a great receiving Corps and they've really shored up a lot of places in that program so we're entering week four of the high school football season now real quick Dudley is there a game this week that you're really looking forward to seeing Fayetteville and benville West Fayetteville has had a great uh early season Drake Lindsay has done a really good job at quarterback for them their defense is turnover happy and has been able to pick up those turnovers but Ben Bill West is going to be a challenge we'll see how maybe good Fayetteville is this weekend all right thanks Dudley you bet more final score right after this you're watching final score on Fox 16. all right the Little Rock touchdown Club meets in downtown Little Rock every week through the fall and there's been plenty of big names as guests this past monday it was a Dallas Cowboys great Tony Dorsett hear how the Hall of Famer overcame a small stature to accomplish huge feats a week after Peyton Manning graced the stage at the Little Rock touchdown club on Monday another NFL legend would follow suit Heisman Trophy winner and Dallas Cowboys running back great Tony Dorsett spoke in downtown Little Rock touching on all sort of topics like his Beginnings Define the odds as an undersized back we had to go out obviously get weighed and this that and the other and so I will put rocks in my pockets you know so I could make the weight and fortunately for me it worked when I went to Pitt I was 155 pounds soaking wet and everybody thought that and when coach them saw me they were like that's him you know this little guy it's a little tiny guy but I said you know my whole my Thorns theme was I'm a thin piece of leather but I'm well put together the youngest of five brothers who were also All-State running backs TD had a high bar to live up to going into pit and had his fair share of doubters you're going to be the worst the worst Dorset of them all you're not going to do this you're not going to do that and it motivated me I would say hey well I'll show you and show them he did Dorset would be an All-American in all of his Four Seasons as a pit panther winning the Heisman Trophy and the National Championship in 1976. going on to set Cowboys rushing records he'd become one of just a few players all time to have won the Heisman The Natty the Super Bowl and be inducted into both the college and pro football hall of fames they're all exceptional Awards and then and for me being considered the best I you know when I went to college everybody thought I was just going to be too small to play major college football or do this and little things make big things happen to do what I was able to to account get accomplished means a lot to me well tomorrow Arkansas athletic director Hunter uracheck will be the guest at the Little Rock touchdown Club you can hear from him that night on Fox 16 News at Nine we're looking forward to it but that'll do it for us tonight on final score make sure to stick around for in depth with graham bensinger we appreciate you joining us tonight thanks to the hard-working men and women in the studio and in the booth who help make this show possible we'll see you next week on final score thank you
