conditions are fueling at least 19 wildfire s baseball Legend Willie Mays has died born in Alabama he started playing with the Negro Leagues when he was in high school at 20 he was with the New York Giants where in 1951 he won Rookie of the Year in 1952 he was drafted into the Korean War serving two years and when he returned he would thrill fans with an MVP season cap with the catch Mays making one of the most memorable plays of all time the Giants would win the World Series every time I went on the field I enjoy what I was doing I gave everything I had they eventually moved to San Francisco but years later Maye returned to New York finishing his career with the Mets he was a 24 time Allstar ABC's Andrew dibert major drug Bus near the southern border Chinese Nationals charged with laundering money for a powerful Mexican cartel this is ABC News Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially arrived in North Korea where he will meet with leader Kim Jong-un to discuss a growing partnership ABC News correspondent Tom Rivers joins me live what do we know about this partnership Tom yeah it looks like they're being pushed closer and closer together they've signed What's called the comprehensive strategic partnership deal what does that mean it's sort of like Article Five of NATO in that if one uh is on the receiving end of aggression the other will come to its Aid so put it into the context of the US and the handful of other allies now providing Ukraine with longer range missiles capable hitting Targets on Russian soil depending on what's hit you could then see that being interpreted as a green light to Pyongyang to say okay we're not going to do just a small cment of Munitions we're going to crank out a heck of a lot mortar rounds artillery shells you name it and come to the aid of Russia so is that where it's focused primarily and not in some sort of retaliatory strike against those who are standing with Ukraine no I mean it's it's it's more of saying look um you know us us two countries are heavily sanctioned by the West we are trying to be isolated and out of that there is a growing if you will ground swell of push back to uh Administration policy you now have uh a collection of of countries such as Russia North Korea China um Iran and getting together and saying look we're doing things very very differently and it is a quote unquote multi-polar world not a world where you have a single superpower which we got used to for decades upon decades so will we see weapons then from these countries going to Russia to Aid them in their efforts in the war in Ukraine well that's what they that's what some uh in Washington say we haven't had documentation of satellite photos or whatever of large if you will shipments of Munitions on trains heading up to Russia uh but again we have to wait and see on that score uh the flip side of the coin what does North Korea potentially get out of this well they need some Hightech help uh with for instance guidance systems for their missiles um so you could see that come into the four interesting as well Russia signed up in the security Council Banning such technology swaps if you will in the past so we'll see how that square is that circle is squared down the road well what do we know about this letter that Putin published in North Korea's State newspaper again talking about the uh the the the long relationship between the two and uh basically more push back for what he sees as NATO expansionism getting ever ever closer to the border of Russia and a very receptive ear when it comes to Kim Jong unu says look we we understand you and uh yeah we're going to be here and uh we're going to be helping you with however we can I.E maybe with uh Munitions if it comes to that down the road so I'll have to wait and see lines being drawn for sure Tom thank you as always ABC News correspondent Tom rivers with me on the in depth at 15 and 45 519 Now traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon and back to you Andy Amanda looks good at least so far on I15 through the Salt Lake Valley uh looking at some traffic right now covering the special session of the legislature today and they'll be taking on a number of topics but one of them has to do with Title 9 and whether or not there's a conflict between Title 9 and the new uh law in Utah regarding Public School restrooms and the requirement that students you know at least K through 12 uh use the restroom that matches their sex designated at Birth is there a conflict between that bill or that law and Title 9 which protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs so I think they'll be addressing that and I'm not sure how they're going to uh to look at the conflict or move forward but we'll follow it we'll be up there as they talk about that and some other things as well during the special session today today on this June 19th juneth and you look at the agenda for this meeting there's a good number of issues being discussed but the big topic seems to involve the new federal Title 9 regulations you recall how Title 9 protects people from discrimination based on identity well now it's expanded to include gender identity and sexual orientation the thing is the transgender bathroom bill in Utah has been going since January and this could fall out of line with the new regulation so what we're seeing is whether state or federal government holds more sway a few days ago Utah State education chairman Jim Moss told A legislature commission that the under the Utah constitutional sovereignty act that could be cited to issue the new title 9 expansion and this act has ties to the 10th Amendment of the US Constitution itself now President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signing a new partnership that includes a vow of mutual Aid if either country is attacked cooler weather and the chance of rain could bring some relief to Firefighters battling blazes in New Mexico that have killed at least one person so far Florida Congressman Matt Gates under investigation by the house Ethics Committee for alleged sexual misconduct here's ABC's Rachel Scott on Capitol Hill the house Ethics Committee revealing that it is continuing to probe Gates over explosive allegations including that he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use accepted improper gifts and that he sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct sources say one woman testified a venmo payment from Gates was for sex others say they were paid to attend parties with him Gates denies the allegations the nation saying goodbye to Willie Mays who once said he thought he had a love affair with a game of baseball he was 93 this is ABC News the Boeing CEO is apologizing to the families affected by multiple plane crashes involving the company's plan ABC News correspondent Sam Sweeney joins me live this hearing must have been intense Sam yeah it started off with that apology da Calhoun the CEO of Boeing standing up at the start of that hearing turning around and facing those families who were chanting shame they were holding up pictures of their loved ones uh and he apologized on behalf of of everyone at Boeing um for what happened uh and that was just the start of the hearing Senators then began grilling him on all of the problems uh that Boeing is facing across the board specifically uh with its production issues and all the safety concerns um that have come since that door blowout back in January and is there another whistleblower now there is this time it is a current Boeing Employee he works in the department that handles what's called non-conforming parts parts that come into the production facility and they they don't meet Boeing specifications so they're pushed to the side either to be discarded or repaired uh and they're tagged with a red tag or they're painted red to indicate that they shouldn't go back in the production line well he says that Boeing's procedures are so screwed up that sometimes he fears that they do end up being put into new planes um because there's no really system of accountability uh and he says that even there's so many parts that before an FAA inspection happened he was told by his bosses to hide some of these parts again these are all allegations and Boeing not responded yet to these specific uh allegations so where does that leave us is Congress thinking of taking some action I mean Boeing is under investigation not just by the FBI but the Department of Justice the national Transportation safety board and the FAA all eyes are on Boeing and they realize that their problems Run Deep uh and they're trying to fix them you know they're their employee tip lines about issues are up more than 500% since before that door blowout out uh and then also they have to comply with these investigations at the end of the day they want to build safe airplanes and they realize that they can't afford to continue you know operating as they were they need to make significant changes and they're working to do that as quickly as possible but as Dave Calhoun said yesterday it's going to be a long road do you think that the CEO's testimony yesterday uh you know made some ground toward moving in that direction of regaining trust look he had been to their problems Dave Calhoun did not come to Capitol Hill yesterday to defend himself to defend his legacy remember he's retiring at the end of the year the top three people of Boeing will all be gone by the end of the year um because of this blowout incident um he accepted what they said he again he admitted to their problems and agreed that he should even meet with these whistleblowers um he did not fight back so yes this is one step in a very long road to recovery we appreciate your reporting Sam Sam Sweeney ABC correspondent reporting on this this difficult hearing yesterday uh for the boing CEO where he faced the families of victims who died on plane crashes Boeing plane crashes thank you for that that's the in-depth at 15 and 45 right now it's 5:49 traffic and weather together way more equity in your home than you even realize now because of the way that property values have gone up so it'd be fun to talk to UCCU and just find out how much Equity you do have but now that I have that hel loock if something happens or if I just decide I want to do something I'd like to you know remodel a bathroom or something or just pay off uh High interest I mean what is the interest go so and if you have a a home equity line with another banking institution switch it over to UCCU and save big time UCCU has provided more than $45 million in savings to their members in 2023 alone sources tell ABC News the house at Ethics Committee has spoken with multiple women who were previously interviewed as part of a justice department sex trafficking probe that probe ended in a guilty plea from Joel Greenberg a one-time close friend of the Florida congressman who was sentenced to 11 years in prison Matt Gates himself has strenuously denied any wrongdoing and prosecutors told him home runs to break a m ey once said he had a love affair with baseball he died peacefully at the age of 93 this is ABC the health care crisis is not limited to just human beings pets are losing their insurance ABC News correspondent Jim Ryan joins me live what's going on here Jim well yes Nationwide pet which is the largest provider of pet insurance across the nation has decided to drop a 100,000 policies from its roster it cites the rising cost of insurance the rising cost of healthcare for pets if you look Amanda at the Consumer Price Index there is a category there called Veterinary Services the overall CPI Rose 3.4% in April but the veterinary services category Rose 7.1% more than twice as much twice the rate of increase and that is driving at least one pet insurance company Nationwide pet to scale back its roster of clients you know I've never had pet insurance but I was shocked when I took my dog just last week to get shots $312 yeah it's amazing the cost here the most expensive pet claim paid last year according to the Pet Insurance Association was $51,000 for a Golden Retriever that had lymphoma other claims included a $46,000 claim on a on a hound 43 for a French Bulldog French Bulldogs are the second most expensive pet to ensure they're the most popular pet in the country right now French bulldogs I worry that people won't be able to afford it and so they're going to be putting their dogs down because they just can't afford to care for them it's called economic youth in Asia and it is a thing a study by Galaxy vets which is an employee owned Veterinary healthc Care System around the country it surveyed its members to find out about that very thing on average vets that belong to this group reported euthanizing 17 pets per month 20% of those one in five were because the client simply couldn't afford treatments that would have saved the Pet's life so you're right some really difficult decisions are being made out there by pet owners who simply can't afford the procedures that their vets are recommending to them and it's tough on veterinarians as well you know they they train their lives to take care of to save pets and when they have to put a pet down because the owner can't afford to treat it I mean that's it's heartbreaking I've never heard that phrase before economic euth in Asia wow tragic thank you uh for your time Jim thank ABC they're out there they could have done that but there are simpler explanations and until I see more convincing evidence to the contrary I'm going to stick with the simple explanation NASA ambassador your car's Electronics have gone insane how do you reset the dash you hop on YouTube and some auto mechanic will show you how like press the start button for 10 seconds while you stand on one leg whatever YouTube is great but Instagram is turning the expert video on its head over the past year there's been a surge in the number of blue collar influencers on Tik Tok and Instagram construction workers plumbers Carpenters auto mechanics and the Daily Mail reports that some of them are earning money in the high six figures the difference on YouTube they teach you stuff on Tik Tok their job is to look hot while they work these Macho men in white skin tight teas and beautiful blue collar babes don't teach you a thing in most cases they don't even talk music rolls and these workingclass Heroes flex and sweat giving you 15 titilating seconds of excitement as they string electric cable through walls saw 2x4s or fix a toilet for them there's hundreds of thousands of dollars to be made the theory is Blue Collar videos are exploding because more young people want to skip the expense of college and learn a trade but judging from the videos I've seen of Lexi the electrician Emilio the Carpenter and others it seems like they're not really teaching us how to replace bathroom tile or turn on a broken light fixture it's more like they're trying to turn on the viewer and they make a ton got the construction related delays that we've been seeing all week going from 7200 to 5600 West I'm Andy farnworth in the KSL traffic center we'll be 10 degrees warmer today with highs in the 80s but 90s tomorrow I'm Mt Johnson right now 54 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios and time for KSL's top National stories ABC News I'm Sherry Preston Russian President Vladimir Putin in North Korea where he signed a partnership agreement with Kim Jong-un they both agreed that each country would come to the other's Aid if attacked but no word on exactly what kind of Aid they're talking about dangerous heat taking hold in the Midwest and in the Northeast and technically says ABC chief meteorologist Jinger Z it's not even summer yet summer temperatures since 1970 have gone up considerably we're talking about overnight lows which go up even warmer a lot of this warming happens while we're sleeping and then the highs as well Plus 3° in the west and two there through the midatlantic up the Northeast cooler temperature in the southwest could call New Mexico wildfires that have killed one person so far we have two devastating enormous fires and when I say enormous it means that they're getting more and more complicated to address that's a governor of New Mexico this is juneth day honoring the emancipation of enslaved Americans it's now a Federal holiday this is ABC News getting your car fixed after getting a recall notice is not always an easy process KSL TV's Matt Gart goes in depth well 50 million vehicles on us roads had open safety recalls in 2022 that's roughly one out of every five cars yeah and as KL investigator Matt Gart found out getting those recalls repaired isn't always as easy as advertised Utah roads can be dangerous but they are perhaps more dangerous than they need to be according to new data from Carfax at the end of last year there were more than 600,000 vehicles with an unfixed safety call on Utah roads we're talking 18% of cars 20% of minivans 24% of light trucks now getting a safety recall fixed is supposed to be easy by law you can take your car into any authorized dealership and they must repair it for free but it is not always that simple as my family recently discovered firsthand I received this safety recall notice for one of our cars but I cannot get the fix done I've been calling the dealership now for months and they don't they don't have the parts then they don't know when they're going to get them carfax's Patrick Olson says yeah the notice frequently comes before an available fix this creates a real problem for consumers where the automaker may have identified the problem but they've not yet identified a solution olon says all safety recalls are serious but some more so than others an exploding airbag with a history of killing drivers for example certainly more perilous than say a sticker with in accurate information Olson says that for the vast majority of recalls 85% automakers have come up with a fix and are prepared to give it to you if you bring your car in I would say I wouldn't want to have that risk in my car and so if you can go get the work done as we reported a couple of weeks ago the Takata airbag recall remains a major issue in this country it has been 10 years since the recalls started after the airbags were blamed for a slew of deaths here in Utah there are still some 70,000 vehicles with an unfixed Takata airbag and that is one where there are lots of supplies that's interesting of course I think you can just put in your VIN number into uh the federal database and find out if there are any recalls on your car if you might want to do that and we appreciate Matt Gart on the in-depth at 15 of 45 649 traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's dinopay app save up to 20 cents per gallon and back over to you Andy and I15 traffic is still clear this morning but I80 got the backups again getting on at a Lake Point and then again uh bracing for some of the hottest weather in decades ABC's Rihanna and Alley the second largest school district in the country Los Angeles Unified voting to ban cell phones in all schools starting in January two people under arrest in England accused of spray painting some of the rocks at Stonehenge orange you're listening to ABC News time for the KSL inth getting your car fixed after getting a recall notice is not always an easy process KSL TV's Matt Gart goes in depth Utah roads can be dangerous but they are perhaps more dangerous than they need to be according to new data from Carfax at the end of last year there were more than 600,000 vehicles with an unfixed safety recall on Utah roads we're talking 18% of cars 20% of minivans 24% of light trucks now getting a safety recall fixed is supposed to be easy by law you can take your car into any authorized dealership and they must repair it for free but it is not always that simple as my family recently discovered firsthand I received this safety recall notice for one of our cars but I cannot get the fix done I've been calling the dealership now for months and they don't they don't have the parts then they don't know when they're going to get them carfax's Patrick Olson says yeah the notice frequently comes before an available fix this creates a real problem for consumers where the automaker may have identified the problem but they've not yet identified a solution olon says all safety recalls are serious but some more so than others an exploding airbag with a history of killing drivers for example certainly more perilous than say a sticker with inaccurate information olon says that for the vast majority of recalls 85% automakers have come up with a fix and are prepared to give it to you if you bring your car in I would say I wouldn't want to have that risk in my car and so if you can go get the work done thousand vehicles with an unfixed Takata airbag and that is one where there are lots of supplies I really appreciate his reporting don't you Matt Gart for us from KSL television on the in-depth at 15 and 45 right now let's get a look at traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino out refinances low down payment purchas purchases and lower credit score scenarios these extra costs end up pushing interest rates higher and this is why a rate quote without context is usually inaccurate it can be confusing but we can help you sort through the numbers to see which option fits your situation B and McGregor mortgagees Made Simple 801 26494 N4 that's 26494 94 or on the web ATF if you're just joining us this morning the Utah legislature is meeting on Capitol Hill today they've been called into special session to talk about a number of things including a a mine that uh might you were you were at the ball game Lonnie Anderson couldn't help but remember the longtime voice of the Salt Lake Bees Steve clowy insurmountable amount of knowledge and and uh game telling storytelling ability and he wasn't the only one thinking about him I loved it when there was a home run you know because you could feel it happening as he spoke he would say gone that Unforgettable voice was prematurely silenced last week when clowy was hit by a car and killed in a crosswalk he's the one that actually told me about it but I just think it's sad because he's he was a great announcer tonight though was about reflecting on the good times the voice of Summer and what clowy meant to the organization as weuse for a moment of silence the bees recognize the broadcasting Legend with a moment of silence he's going to be missed a lot fans say they'll never forget that voice he was the best at his craft there was nobody better a voice that will live on in memory forever he was just a gem for this this state and and this community yeah really nice night here tonight really good siiz crowd given it was a week night game and the bees took care of business in front of the home crowds Steve KY I'm sure many of you know was also the voice of Weber State athletics and happen to be a good friend of my co-host Tim Hughes who is mourning his death um and and yeah t Tim like many
